Prairiewood Leisure Centre wins Leisure Centre of the Year 2019
As the warmer months approach, Council is continuing to work hard to make Fairfield City the best place to live, work and raise a family with fun and affordable activities and events for everyone. Later this month, we will reopen Aquatopia for the warmer weather ahead. Last year we welcomed a record 78,269 visitors and expanded with our new thrilling 20-metre slide tower and Fishpipe attraction. We are currently finalsing designs for an exciting new Wave Pool, as well as non-aquatic activities that will be open all year round, offering families more reasons to visit Aquatopia. Council is also hard at work preparing our biggest and best Illuminate New Year’s Eve event so far! This year, Illuminate will make the move to our redeveloped Fairfield Showground. Previously, tickets to Illuminate have sold out within hours so this move to the bigger Showground will mean more local families will be able to enjoy the magic of this event.

One of our most important commitments as a Council is to provide residents with opportunities to get outside, get fit and get healthy while having fun with family and friends. That is why we are transforming Fairfield Showground with upcoming works including a new synthetic football field, a multipurpose amenities building and a playground for children of all abilities at Deerbush Park. We will also begin work on a new neighbourhood park for residents in Carramar and Villawood, designing a new library and business hub for Fairfield, and a new multi-level carpark at Hughes Street, Cabramatta. These are just some of the many ways Council is investing in the City. As your Mayor, I will continue to deliver new and exciting ways to enhance Fairfield City as a great place to live and raise your family.

AQUATOPIA SEASON BEGINS The hottest attraction in Fairfield City – Aquatopia – reopens on 21 September. Aquatopia is Fairfield City’s affordable family water park. It opens for its fourth season, hot on the heels of the opening of the exciting 20-metre slide tower in January. The new tower includes the 3-Lane Racing Ride - perfect for challenging your friends, the high-speed free-fall slide, and the Rocket Drop Slide - which drops brave riders via a trap door to a fast loop through a transparent tube that circles the free-fall slide on its way down. There is also a 10-metre slide tower, Adventure Aqua Tower, Fishpipe, Wave Rider and toddlers’ paddling pool. Council is busy designing the newest additions to the park – a Wave Pool with artificial beach, new amenities and cabanas, and nonaquatic activities which will allow the park to be open all year round. WATER SAFETY WEEK Fairfield City Leisure Centres will celebrate Water Safety Week from Monday, 30 September to Friday, 4 October. There will be free swimming classes for babies through to adults, lifeguard rescue and CPR demonstrations. A special pool inflatable obstacle course will be at Prairiewood Leisure Centre. CHANGES TO WARD BOUNDARIES Fairfield/Cabravale Total electoral enrolments: 68,570
Fairfield City Council has resolved to reduce the number of Council wards from 3 to 2, with the ward names to be Parks and Fairfield/Cabravale. The number of councillors will not be reduced. There will be 6 councillors per ward plus the popularly-elected Mayor. The ward boundaries will be on public exhibition until 18 September 2019. Submissions will be accepted until 4.30pm on 2 October 2019. The community is invited to have their say on the proposed new ward boundaries via Council’s website at www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/wardboundaries, by email or mail. Following the consultation period, a further report will go to Council and Council’s decision will be published in public notices of local newspapers.

PAVE YOUR WAY INTO HISTORY Fairfield City residents and businesses now have the opportunity to recognise their family’s history and connection with Fairfield City by purchasing engraved pavers to be placed along the walking path at the new Deerbush Park within Fairfield Showground. The pavers provide a unique opportunity to recognise the community’s connections to the City. The pavers will cost $88 for a large paver and $55 for a small paver. The price covers the cost of purchasing, engraving and laying the pavers. The pavers will be laid when the path is completed in early 2020. Design work on the new playground for children of all abilities at Deerbush Park is continuing.
Designs for Karella Park – a new park for the families of Villawood and Carramar – have been finalised.
New additions to the plans include a Liberty Swing that will broaden the range of features catering for visitors with a variety of abilities.
The new 3200 square metre park at the corner of Koonoona and Karella avenues will be the biggest neighbourhood park in Villawood and Carramar.
A ground level ropes course is also proposed, as well as an Exeloo for the convenience of visitors. These features are in addition to a flying fox, water play space with squirters and dumping buckets, wheelchair-accessible carousel, ground-level trampoline, riding track and climbing net fort with slide. Also proposed is an accessible riverbed crossing, water pump, sand digger, picnic tables and bench seating, voice tubes, trees and landscaping. Construction is due to begin in early 2020.

It will feature a ground level ropes course that will allow children to climb onto a rope net structure via a number of different climbing paths. Other play items include a multiple seated swing set with a boat seat, and toddler play items with shade. Other active spaces include a permanent outdoor ping pong table, half basketball court, and dynamic and static exercise equipment. A shelter with picnic seating is included as well as a circuit path, passive turf areas and multiple seating opportunities.
Whitlam Library
Whitlam Library Children’s Area Children visiting Whitlam Library will soon have more fun learning opportunities with a stage and electronic tablets featuring in our revamped children’s area. Council, through an $85,000 NSW Government’s Metropolitan Public Library grant, will create a more interactive and engaging space for children to learn, have fun and spend quality time with their families. The new space will stimulate and enhance a child’s natural desire to explore, discover, learn and interact with mobile collections; provide seating for parents to read to their children and access to mobile information technology with educational apps and games. There will also be a stage area for larger scale events to support the library’s children’s events, workshops and programs. The upgrade is due to be completed by the end of this year.
Fairfield Showground
Fairfield Showground Work has begun on the new multipurpose amenities building at Fairfield Showground. The $5.1 million building is being jointly funded by the local, state and federal governments as part of the Western Sydney City Deal’s Western Parkland City Liveability Program. The multipurpose amenities building will feature a community space, kitchen/ canteen, two large change rooms that can be divided into four, adjoining massage and doctors’ rooms, restrooms, match official change rooms and bathrooms, gym/training room, office space, first aid facility and storage. Work has been completed on the undercover festival space to allow for events to take place regardless of the weather. The synthetic football field is nearing completion in time for the summer sports season.

Council will soon open a new $1.36 million Council-run preschool for the families of Bossley Park.
Work is continuing on the $16.4 million upgrade of Smithfield Road from Elizabeth Drive to Polding Street.
Bossley Park Preschool, constructed in the grounds of Bossley Park Public School on Bossley Road, replaces the 20-place mobile preschool that previously operated out of a classroom at the school.
Road works are currently taking place at Richards Road, Dunstan Street to Beavors Street and Elizabeth Drive.
The preschool was funded through the NSW Department of Education’s capital works program. The service will offer an extra 100 sessions of preschool per week to the community and will provide a quality preschool program to 80 children every week. The preschool features an open-plan layout to encourage children to engage in multiple play-based learning stations across the entire centre rather than traditional classroom-based learning. Works include the realignment of Richards Road to line up with the Fairfield Showground entrance and the installation of traffic lights, turning lanes and pedestrian crossings. Richards Road will be closed between Smithfield Road and Winburndale Road for up to eight weeks from 4 September 2019 to complete the realignment. Signposted detours will be in place via Canley Vale Road and Bulls Road. When completed, Smithfield Road will cater for four lanes of traffic between Elizabeth Drive and Polding Street, reducing traffic congestion and improving one of Fairfield City’s busiest roads. GRANDPARENTS DAY Sunday 27 October Council is encouraging all grandparents, their children and grandchildren to come and enjoy free family fun activities at Council’s Grandparents Day. The event has become a special day for many local families. Council is proud to again host an event at Fairfield City Youth and Community Centre and Adventure Park in Vine Street, Fairfield from 11am to 2pm. Grandparents Day is an opportunity for families across the generations to invest in some quality time with each other. There will be a fair with fun, interactive activities, things to do for people of10all abilities, a performance stage and sausage sizzle.

The Mother Wound is a moving and vibrant collection of new works by Western Sydney artist Amani Haydar, who uses painting and mixed media to explore her personal experiences growing up in an Arab-Australian household and working as an advocate for women. The new work responds to Haydar’s unique perspective as a witness to domestic violence, and the difficulties encountered on the journey towards healing and building resilience. GET RID OF BULKY WASTE Spring Clean Drop-off Day Sunday 13 October at Fairfield Showground 7am-3.30pm. Dispose of your unwanted household goods and bulky items. Last year almost 100 tonnes of bulky waste was dropped off at Fairfield Showground, all of which was disposed of responsibly or recycled by Council. This event is in addition to the two free kerbside pick-ups that residents have each year.
