SUPPORTING BUSINESSES Council is working hard to ensure the ongoing growth and success of Fairfield City Centre.

We want business to come alive. That is why we are investing in a new business hub, to give local businesses and business people a place to help them grow.

They will have access to wonderful facilities, such as meeting rooms, workshops, work desks, computers, printing facilities, WiFi, audio visual recording equipment and more.

Importantly, it will also be a place for businesses to come together and learn from one another.

The new hub will be located in the existing Fairfield Library building in Barbara Street.

The library will be moved to a new location in Hamilton Road, providing residents with an even better library experience.

In 2019/2020, Council is planning to invest around $1 million in the City Centre on improvements to roads, footpaths and plazas. This not only makes the City

Centre a more attractive place to visit, it improves access for shoppers and businesses.

Wonderful Wednesday promotes the City Centre as a place to ‘Experience Cosmopolitan Shopping’ and has been successful with wandering musicians, stiltwalkers and children’s entertainers adding more colour to the centre and thrilling shoppers every month as they receive their free shopping bag.

Our next big event will be Christmas in Fairfield City Centre. Epoch Plaza will be again packed with residents, shoppers and business owners enjoying carollers, festive visitors, including Santa and the traditional lighting of the giant Christmas tree. It will be held on Thursday, 5 December from 6.30pm. The tree will be switched on at 8pm. I invite everyone to come down for this special evening.

SPENDING SPREE An increase in foot traffic has been a major factor in the success of the Wonderful Wednesday marketing campaign.

Since its launch in May, millennials have embraced the catchy tagline ‘Experience Cosmopolitan Shopping!’ and the roving street entertainers enthusiastically.

Service is what our merchants are leading with, shoppers can get price from the comfort of their homes, but service is the missing link.

“Fairfield is where they grew up, it’s in their hearts. These savvy consumers shop where their money aligns with the things they are passionate about. Wonderful Wednesday has given them that value added experience which is an event,” Fairfield Place Co-ordinator Helen Pijaca said.

The City retailers have always had a reputation of delivering good old fashion service.

EASTER SHOW In recent years Fairfield has welcomed refugees from the Middle East and its large Christian community has taken to heart the City Centre’s Easter celebrations.

Crowds gathered to see the Easter Bunny accompanied by the Princess as the dynamic duo made their way through the City Centre handing out Easter eggs to young and old alike.

The Easter message is about new life, for all of us who have made Fairfield our new home this event has added meaning. Easter is proof life always triumphs over death.

FAIRFIELD’S FEAST Culinary Carnival ushered in a new era on Saturday 1 June and in the process crowned itself as Sydney’s truly international food festival.

More than 5,000 people attended the street carnival savouring a global menu.

“The onsite dining experience was enhanced with family entertainment,” Fairfield Place Manager Tony Walker said.

Culinary Carnival raises the profile of the City. In terms of economics this event does attract people who don’t live in the area.

“Fairfield is the most diverse city in Australia with more than 160 nationalities and Culinary Carnival showcases the best of our city to the wider public.”

There were red faces at the chilli eating competition; patrons were also enthralled by a spectacular array of entertainers and dancers.

The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce believes that Culinary Carnival has lasting economic benefits.

“Culinary Carnival raises the profile of the city. In terms of economics this event does attract people who don’t live in the area,” Fairfield Chamber of Commerce President Vince Movizio said.

“Investment can flow from this event, because prospective entrepreneurs can see the excellent infrastructure of the city. We have very good public transport.

“Couple this with exceptional rental opportunities and Fairfield is a great location to set up or expand a business.

“There’s no doubt Culinary Carnival is the best advertisement for the Fairfield City Centre.”

MUM’S THE WORD! One of the most important days of the year is Mother’s Day and in Fairfield it’s a special opportunity to thank all of the mothers and grandmothers in our lives.

Once again crowds lined the City Centre’s streets for May’s Mother’s Day festivity, as acclaimed piano accordionist Ross Maio honoured the City’s mums.

“We pause to celebrate the love and compassion of the women who have raised us, and to thank them for the many years of patience and selflessness,” Chic Skin & Laser Clinic’s Amy Yaghoubpour said.

The power of a mother’s love

“Throughout our lives, mothers are there with an encouraging word, a sympathetic ear, and a tender heart.

A flower was given to every mum, proving love and a flower can’t be hidden!

CITY CHRISTMAS One of Fairfield’s most cherished traditions is the lighting of the City’s Christmas tree.

Mayor Frank Carbone will switch the lights on Thursday 5 December at 8pm to mark the start of the sacred season.

“We renew the bonds of affection between all of us. We awaken the faith in our hearts; it’s a call to action for each of us,” Fruit World’s Rafid Elias said.

The family event will feature, the popular petting zoo, Christmas characters will meet and greet the faithful, and Our Lady of Mt Carmel school choir will uplift your soul.

We reflect on the splendour of God’s creation, and the sacred ties that binds us all together.

Touching down from his long flight from the North Pole will be Santa Claus.

This wonderful season brings out the best in people and the Fairfield Uniting Church Food trolley drive typifies this fact.

Epoch Plaza will be the starting grid on Friday 6 December at 10am. Founder Tom Murphy from Starr Partners said kindness accomplishes so much.

“Throughout the year we see people of all ages caring for people in need.

“Neighbours helping neighbours, lifting up those who need a helping hand.

GOING ON SAFARI SBS TV’s Maeve O’Meara has declared Fairfield as her most popular food safari.

“The Fairfield Walking Safari is always sold out in advance.

People as far as Wollongong come here to devour Fairfield’s feast. You guys have got the lot!” Ms O’Meara said.

“We visit Baalbek Bakery, La Torre Cakes, Ivan’s Butchery and many others. I love and respect the people who run these great eateries. Their generosity is phenomenal.”

For many years the Fairfield Place Team has marketed the city as a global food destination worth visiting.

The Fairfield Walking Safari is always sold out in advance.

“They say the proof is in the pudding, Fairfield is a port of call for Sydney foodies and Maeve’s food safari reaffirms this undisputed fact,” Fairfield Place Co-ordinator Helen Pijaca said.

Fairfield’s Walking Safari also stops at Aladin Sweets, Tasic Hot Burek, Fruit World, Afrobazaar as well as Tierra Latinas, Al Jamil Market and Green Peppercorn Restaurant.

“On our safari we learn about the family history, stories aren’t the icing on the cake; they are the cake!”
