A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, The yearning for our pre-pandemic lives is nearly universal. I am guilty of this sentiment every time I put the face mask on my 2-year-old and drop another dollop of hand sanitizer into his tiny palm. For many of us, a return to normal means an easing of the stress imposed by this lingering pandemic. As tempting as it sounds to fall comfortably back into our old ways, should “normal” really be our goal?

COVID has had horrific consequences, including millions of untimely deaths. Yet, it has also forced us to acknowledge the community-wide impact of destabilized incomes, drastic wealth disparity, looming eviction proceedings, and, yes, homelessness.

It has shed light on the millions of Americans living on the brink of financial collapse and the dangers of not having a safety net to catch those who fall. It has exacerbated the workforce shortage and called attention to the insufficient wages and lack of affordable housing options for our “essential workers.” All of these issues existed prior to the pandemic and, in this moment, we are gifted an opportunity to leverage a tragic crisis into a better future.

At Fair Tide, we are running with that opportunity, as have many of you who so generously supported our work this year. We expanded our Landlord Engagement Initiative to create immediate housing opportunities for people experiencing homelessness. We kept folks in their homes through our COVID Emergency Fund and streamlined the way in which households access this assistance by enhancing our collaborations with social service partners. Through my seat on the Statewide Homeless Council, and as vice-chair of the Kittery Housing Committee, we helped elevate the voices of the underserved to create policies and programs aimed at solving our housing crisis. Our thrift store has come back strong, both online and in-store sales, and continues to serve as a vital source of funding for our programs.

As we enter the fifth and final year of our strategic growth plan, we will cross the finish line of some much-anticipated affordable housing projects. With our boots on the ground and our eye on the horizon, we will also undertake the exciting process of planning what’s next. We humbly invite you to join us on the final and most rewarding miles of this marathon by making a financial contribution to our work. FAIR TIDE PROVIDES HOUSING...

Safe, stable and affordable housing is a prerequisite for life improvement.

Access to permanent and affordable housing changes the trajectory of a family for generations.

This is why we are so passionate about our mission to secure housing for those in need.

But, we're up against a lot in Maine...

Maine has a shortage of about 20,000 units of affordable and available rental housing.

30,000 households are paying more than half of their income on housing costs.

The waitlist for a Section 8 rental voucher in Maine is 25,000 households; about 7-8 years.

Life Stability

Ruby's substance use stole everything from her life, including her job, her housing and her young child. When she landed in the homeless shelter, she was determined to get her life and her son back. Fair Tide helped Ruby secure housing and, as a team, began to tackle the rest. We are thrilled to share that Ruby has remained sober, secured and maintained an almost full-time job, and is reunited with her now four year-old child.

Households moved from homelessness into permanent housing

Strategy 1: Expand Existing Rental Market After a successful pilot program, we expanded our Landlord Engagement Initiative! This innovative program offers a menu of incentives to landlords who rent to homeless households with rental vouchers.

Since the program's launch, we have made 9 housing placements with 7 landlord partners!

Strategy 2: Develop New Affordable Housing Affordable housing projects require years of pre-development work before the shovels hit the ground. Our efforts are no different, but this year has brought us closer than ever to our goal of building two affordable housing projects.

After vetting dozens of potential properties, Fair Tide has narrowed down our search to two promising sites. We currently have a purchase and sale agreement on one site and anticipate nailing down the other by the middle of 2022!

Zoning changes passed in Kittery which a) open up opportunities for affordable housing projects that did not exist a few years ago and b) mandate 10% affordability for developments greater than 5 units.

As a member of the Kittery Housing Committee, we established a Housing Reserve Fund to facilitate the development of affordable housing units. This year, we created a pilot program which provides grants for homeowners to build Accessory Dwelling Units for affordable rentals.

HIKE FOR THE HOMELESS

Team Expedition Dos hiked their little legs all the way to the top of Mount Kineo; Fair Tide's own Barb & Colleen gathered a crew and climbed Mount Agamenticus; and event founders, Charlie and Mac trekked 100 miles from the Seacoast to the Summit of Mount Washington. All of our hiker's efforts paid off as we raised $17,000!

FAIR TIDE THRIFT STORE Earlier this year, we put out a survey to collect input from our thrift store customers. One theme that rose to the top was the superb customer service that our staff deliver and we couldn't agree more. It's been a trying year for those in the retail profession and our team deserves an enthusiastic round of applause for their dedication and commitment to Fair Tide and our mission!

With the pandemic came a necessity to put more energy toward online sales. Our team has become experts at curating and selling items through various online platforms. This pivot has created a source of income for our housing programs that is resistant to the impacts of COVID while giving our customers a convenient, safe and fun way to shop all the treasures that come through our door!
