VOTM - Alfa MiTo & Iveco Daily V The Alfa Romeo MiTo is a three-door supermini officially introduced on June 19, 2008, at Castello Sforzesco in Milan, Italy with an international introduction at the British Motor Show in 2008. The car was available in all Alfa’s major markets in stages. The three-door hatchback is front-wheel drive and is sold to compete with the MINI and the Audi A1.

The MiTo is built on Fiat Small platform used on the Fiat Grande Punto, also employed by the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa D. Between 2008 and 2016 around 250,000 Mitos were built.

Jaguar TCK Bulletin We have issued a technical bulletin for our TCK89 (Jaguar AJV8 Models) due to a number of customer queries regarding the construction of the tensioner. The AJ-V8 engine was originally fitted with plastic chain tensioners which were prone to fractures.

To combat the original design flaw, Jaguar manufactured the tensioner with a metal construction from 2005. As we follow OE specification, our kits also contain the metal chain tensioners.

Newsletter 2017 Season Update Round 8, Leguna Seca, USA

After a two-week break, the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team resumed action at Laguna Seca (U.S.A), home of the eighth round of the 2017 WorldSBK Championship. Chaz Davies, made an impressive comeback after being unable to train for the last 3 weeks due to a spinal injury at Misano. The Welshman finished free practice with the best provisional time of 1:23.425.

“It’s the first test I’ve given my body since Misano, and things felt quite normal aside from getting a little bit of back ache as the day went on. Hopefully a good night’s sleep will make me feel refreshed for tomorrow. We’ll take it lap by lap and see how it goes.” - Chaz Davies Chaz Raced in a ‘final edition’ livery on days 2 & 3 to support the unveil of the new Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition; something Hollywood legend, Keanu Reeves showed an interest in when displayed at the American circuit.

Chaz Davies’ had a spectacular win in Race 1, bringing this season’s tally to four victories, for a total 24 in his WorldSBK career, 20 of which came with Ducati. Davies quickly pulled away at the start with the two factory Kawasakis starting from third position. He then took the lead during lap 11, and with three laps to go he gave the final, decisive push to victory.

Chaz went on to finish Race 2 in a respectable third position after starting from ninth position on the grid. The Welshman fought hard in the early laps to make his way through traffic and take the third spot. Davies then mounted an attack on fellow brit, Sykes, progressively reducing the gap before being cut short by the checkered flag.

After eight rounds, Chaz (226 points) finished third on the leader board. WorldSBK will now take a break ahead of the ninth round, scheduled for August 18-20 at Euro Speedway Lausitz (Germany).

Newsletter Tech Corner - Fiat 1.3 JTD Chains.

It is vital that when a timing chain is being replaced, not only the chain(s) are replaced, but all associated parts. It is not good engineering practice to fit a new chain to worn sprockets & guides, as the excessive clearances created by the worn parts will reduce the life of the chain. It is vital that the tensioner is always replaced, as this component is critical for the chain to remain at the correct tension. Failing tensioners will allow chain(s) to oscillate in lateral and axial plains, initially causing excessive noise, followed by metal fatigue, extension and eventual total failure.

A good example would be the FIAT 1.3JTD engine used in Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ford, Citroen and many more. It has an oil service schedule of 18,000 miles and we have anecdotal evidence that the original chains are breaking at 30,000 miles.

Following pressure from FIAT’s UK customers, FIAT released this statement: Quote from FIAT letter: “Of particular concern is that at about 70,000 miles the timing chain can break on these vehicles causing catastrophic engine failure, which could be due to the serial contamination of the engine oil, causing excess wear to engine components�.

The cause of this was a DPF regeneration process that FIAT developed. Fuel is injected on the exhaust stroke, which acts as a cleaning agent as it passes through the DPF. However, this system fails and consequently excess fuel is washed passed the piston rings into the sump, diluting and degrading the oil. This in turn reduces the hydraulic pressure delivered to the timing chain tensioner and increases friction, allowing the chain to move out of its correct path. Generating noise and eventual failure.

It is for issues like this that FAI is focused on production quality, following the OE specification. Using premium materials like chrome pins to reduce wear from high friction loads and to extend service life when oil condition becomes hostile. Due to the small engineering tolerances (clearances) used in modern engines, the amount of contamination needed to deem the engine oil as hostile are much lower than many people would think. It is therefore of utmost importance that to ensure your timing chain is always operating in an optimum environment, that the engine oil must be of the correct grade (as specified by the manufacturer) and if necessary it should be replaced along with the oil filter, even if it is not due as per the service schedule.
