The end of an era was announced by Ford recently as they outlined their plans to scrap the Fiesta; the move being part of their vision of an electrified vehicle lineup. We feel there is something nostalgic about the Fiesta as, over its 46-year history, one of the eight versions would likely have crossed your path at some point. Learner car?...First Car?...Lifts to the cinema from mum?... However, you remember them, Fiesta – We salute you!
Launched in the seventies, the Fiesta has been a massive seller, almost since day one. The UK market was crying out for a small & affordable family car that offered an alternative to some of the new Japanese models for sale across Europe. In just 4 years the Mk1 had sold over a million units worldwide. Most have forgotten the first couple of generations, but with the Mk3 running from 1989-1996 and with the highest rate of sales yet, young or old, the name Fiesta was cemented in minds across Europe.
The Mk4 saw the Zetec engine introduced (before it just became a trim level), becoming Britain’s best-selling car between 96-98. The Mk5 was essentially a Mk4 underneath but with massively improved looks and no let-up in numbers manufactured, seemingly no one cared.
2002 saw Ford launch the version dubbed ‘world car’, pushing into previously untapped markets. A big plus for this sixth generation was ABS & airbags as standard. Enter the apprehensive eighteen-year-old who just asked their parents for a Zetec-S, only to be met with ‘Yes, what a safe choice!’
The Mk7 is more the Fiesta most have come to love. Be it a frugal 1.0 Ecoboost or the go-kart feel ST model, the Fiesta finally ticked all the boxes. Cheap, safe, practical, and fun to drive…Wait, why’s it being canned?

The term ‘Car of the Year’ is awarded by various motoring organisations, but the accolade isn’t usually measured by how ‘good’ a vehicle actually is. When most think of what’s on offer in Europe, your mind might wander to something impressive that has an M or an RS badge on the boot lid. The parameters that ‘Car of the Year’ hinges on are more sales, safety and space rather than horsepower and handling. It should really have an asterisk after ‘Car of the year’ saying *based on affordability and not the car of your dreams.
