Vehicle of the Month Nissan Note 2013>

The second version of the Nissan Note, launched in 2012, was a little better looking, a little larger and a little better equipped. Overall, making this little car a hit with young families.

Cheap to buy and run, this ideal A-to-B runabout sold well in a crowded sector, saturated further by good offerings from the Korean brands.

Nissan’s reputation for reliability helped get the buyers in the showroom, where the Note’s party piece could be displayed by the sales agent – it’s the Tardis in disguise! Compact and easy to park but with plenty of space in the back, fitted with a trick rear bench that can slide forwards to expand boot space, depending on the job at hand.

The Note fell into a strange category, the ‘Mini MPV’ and they did a good job of it. Despite not winning any awards for styling or interior plastic quality for that matter, Nissan knew their target market and as a result makes for a common sight throughout Europe.

Engine of the Month Mercedes 1.6 / 1.8i M.271 The M 271 engine series applies to 1.6 & 1.8i petrol units fitted to many popular models since 2002, built around an aluminium block and utilising variable valve technology.

The units were flexible enough to be stretched anywhere from 120 HP to 201 HP – the higher of which was reserved for the 1.8 Supercharged version. The very thirsty 2.5 V6 petrol units slowly dropped off as the M 271 became the go-to for petrol power.

This was around the time that diesel was being hailed as the answer to our prayers so coined a large proportion of sales but for those who wanted a more refined power-plant, anything badged Kompressor or later CGI was your answer.

The sheer number of applications make the M 271 numerous variants worth stocking for. FAI have fantastic coverage to help you with that.
