It’s fair to say that the BMW straight six diesels created a bench mark that all manufacturers have tried to emulate, which to a degree they have, albeit always one or two steps behind.
The smooth (for a diesel), powerful units, left customers wanting for nothing, delivering fuel figures you’d associate with a vehicle kicking out a hundred horses less and quite frankly a ridiculous amount of midrange punch, regardless of application. Any badge ending in 35d put it’s 280 bhp through either two or four wheels, producing an intoxicating driving experience and effortless pace.
The M57D30 powered the most popular BMW models for over a decade which sold in droves compared to comparable petrol units that, although loved by enthusiasts, felt like someone was siphoning off fuel whilst you slept.
BMW employ some of the best engineers in the business which has resulted the M57D30 staying on top of Euro emission standards and in 2007, the rise of the term Efficient Dynamics. Tweaks in the fuelling process and various electronic aides which reduced power loss whilst on the move gave birth to a breed of car that is still highly sought after.

The Golf MK7 maybe a bit of a yawn when it comes down to the styling, maybe not as exciting as the quirky Leon or not providing the feeling of luxury you get when in an Audi A3 but with 19 variants on offer, all built to a high standard, the Golf is still the epitome of the phrase “It does everything well”
