Meet-the-Team!

FAI Welcome a new Product Manager Malc Allison recently joined the FAI Product Development team, taking responsibility for a variety of product ranges. FAI’s Valve Train, Cylinder Heads, Valve Covers & Belting (Timing Belts & Tensioners) are all now in Malc’s experienced hands.

Malc has considerable experience within the Automotive sector having started his career in an OEM workshop before moving into Service and Parts Product management roles.

Malc is sure to be a great asset to FAI’s continued growth while providing our customers with the benefit of his extensive knowledge.

“FAI is a great fit for me, working alongside like-minded professionals.

My passion for all things automotive and practical background will allow me to progress some of FAI’s long-established product groups. I aim to expand our product offering over the coming months, providing an extensive and relevant range to all our customers.

This is something that I’ve started by quickly introducing some new Camshaft Kits – giving customers a great repair solution all in one box.

A Very Special VOTM! No one knows what powers Santa’s Sleigh, obviously! Maybe it’s magic dust or flying reindeer – but maybe just maybe, Santa is actually a massive petrol-head!?

What would his sleigh be put together with? It needs to be strong, able to carry serious weight – and that’s just Santa himself – and be pretty quick too.

We had a discussion in the office and came up with something that we thought fitted the bill. Something based around a Lamborghini Urus but with a few modifications carried out at the Elf-Garage.

We’re thinking to swap out the tie rod ends for Range Rover ones, ball joints from a VW Amarok and rear control arms from the BMW X5. Now Santa can go nuts on those mince pies!

The engine? That’s a tricky one! Something dependable, powerful but also fairly economical – Afterall, his commute is over a million miles! We reckon the N57 3.0 d but maybe two strapped together for a meaty V12 diesel – Yep, that should do it!

So, if you spot a rotund gentleman in a red suit broken down this holiday season, point him to FAI and we’ll help him out!

ou have to admire what KIA has achieved in the UK since the Mid 2000s, where vehicles like the KIA Rio seemed to be cobbled together from cheap 1980s cars and even had the indicator on the wrong side of the steering wheel for right-hand drive versions.

This amazing progression from what was seen as cheap & cheerful runabouts to techladen SUVs such as the 2015> Sportage has squeezed the mid-range car sector. The likes of Ford, Opel & PSA suddenly had a new competitor that blew them out of the water for warranty cover.

Engine of the Month BMW 1.6 / 2.0d N47

L

aunched in 2007 as the answer to all company car driver prayers, the N47 carried with it the new term of ‘Efficient Dynamics’ which translated to increased MPG and decreased CO2 emissions; both of which put it near the top for fleet managers.

With seemingly no downsides and mated to the highly popular 1, 3 & 5 series, to name a few, the N47 was produced in colossal numbers. The 3 series actually outsold the Mondeo in the UK on several occasions as the BMW badge became an increasingly common sight around town.

Undoubtedly, another nail in the coffin for the Mondeo!

All was well until around 2010, when the first reports of timing chain issues made their way around the automotive grapevine. As most now know, the problem swelled, and this otherwise brilliant engine soon attracted the reputation for a common & costly repair bill.

It’s for this reason that our TCK133C has been a number one seller almost since we launched it. Sales were also helped along by people in the know carrying out preventive maintenance when the history of the car was lost, or the chain had been running for many miles. Customers were aided by the FAI kit as it includes the redesigned chain, in line with the OE efforts to correct the earlier and more problematic versions.

Due to the obvious knock-on effects of timing failure, FAI stocks a whole host of engine components, to get that BMW back on the motorway where it belongs. These include a new kit that contains all replacement timing components (TCK133C) and the camshaft carrier (LR330) that often sustains damage during a failure; see TCK438 overleaf.

Chaz Davies Retires One risk of including a Southeast Asian country within the WorldSBK calendar is the potential for extreme weather, something that the teams were faced with prior to Saturday’s race one, as a tropical storm battered the track. Organisers were left no choice but to stop all racing and postpone until Sunday, when the two main races would be held back to back. Luckily, the riders were able to complete the practise session and the Superpole before the clouds descended.

Early in the Superpole, Chaz opted for a quick pit stop to swap out the tyres as the original choice wasn’t inspiring confidence. He performed well through the majority of the race yet a couple of slip-ups on later segments lost him valuable time. He hung on and secured 11th (4th row start) for race one.

The hope for a dry track for Sunday’s events was dashed as dark grey clouds blotted the sky.

Race one was delayed a little while the track dried off. Optimistic that the rain was done with, many riders opted for slicks despite the track being left in varying states of wetness. All were cautious as the race got underway, not wishing to lose traction in the corners.

Chaz weathered the storm well and defended his gains from increasingly competitive advances. The drying track allowed the pace to climb in later laps and riders jostled before the flag came down. The Welshman kept his nerve and subsequently his place of 8th.

Race two swings around and with it even worse conditions. The heavens had opened and in true Indonesian style, it rained extremely hard, soaking all that had been lined up on the grid.

Safety assessors agreed to push the start back a couple of hours.

4 O’clock soon arrives and thankfully the rain has stopped but the track remains sodden.

These are hardly the conditions you’d choose for your last ever professional race, but nothing was going to stop Chaz from enjoying his last moments in WSBK. This wasn’t about a final placing but instead, more about finishing his last ever race of a sport he’s committed blood, sweat & tears to throughout his career.
