Root: The RPG Deluxe Edition
and the Clearing Booklet
by Valerie Osbourn, Magpie Games
In 2019, Magpie Games launched on Kickstarter Root: The Roleplaying Game – an officially licensed tabletop RPG based on the award-winning board game by Leder Games. The project raised more than $750,000 in crowdfunding, including postKickstarter preorders. After the success of the Core Rulebook and the supplement, Travelers & Outsiders, we are pleased to announce the release of Root: The RPG Deluxe Edition and the Clearing Booklet for the first time for retailers on September 14th! Root: The RPG Deluxe Edition contains special variants of the Core Rulebook and the first supplement, Travelers and Outsiders, wrapped in a hard slipcase featuring the amazing art of original Root artist Kyle Ferrin. Complete with foil-stamped covers and silk bookmarks, these deluxe versions of both books contain everything you need to bring the tales of the Woodland to your table! The Clearing Booklet is a supplement for Root: The RPG featuring four clearings: Hookfoot Bog, Sixtoe Stand, Limmery Post, and Coolclaw Mine. Each clearing contains interesting conflicts, important residents (with stats), unique locations, and special rules. You can use these clearings as the setting for a one-shot or as part of a longer campaign in the broader Woodland! The team at Magpie Games was overwhelmed by the positive response Root: The RPG has received. When we released the product line for direct online consumer preorders, we sold more than $75,000, with an additional $125,000+ in retail and distribution. Some of this success is certainly the result of the strength of the license; Leder Games’ Root: A Woodland Game of Might and Right has a strong following in the tabletop board game community. In addition, Root: The RPG is fully illustrated with brand new pieces by the series’s artist Kyle Ferrin. Beyond that strong foundation, Root: The RPG offers new and unique experiences for independent and traditional players alike. Furthermore, the game is quite easy to learn for both beginners and veteran players sporting mechanics based on the robust Powered by the Apocalypse system – with aesthetics similar to Redwall, Warriors, Wanderhome, or Mouse
Guard. To see the game in action, check out the Good Time Society YouTube channel featuring a How To Play and an actual play one shot video featuring Becca Scott! We’re so excited to bring players new and old into the Woodlands, and we hope this game finds a way onto your shelves this year!
