South Beach Wine & Food Festival From February 21-25, the 17th annual SOBEWFF® will turn Miami into a starstudded culinary mecca.

OUR FIRE AMBASSADOR Born from a passion for the ancient art of South American live-fire cooking, Argentine grillmaster Francis Mallmann creates a contemporary asado experience.

Valentine’s Day at Faena For some people, the fastest way to the heart is through the stomach, and Pao by Paul Qui and Francis Mallmann’s Los Fuegos are both offering tantalizing Valentine’s Day menus to fan the flames of your romance.

This five-day fair features over 85 events with internationally acclaimed chefs, culinary personalities and the world’s top wine and spirits producers. Talented Italian chef Antonio Magliulo, who helms the kitchens of top Tuscan boutique hotel Il Pellicano and La Posta Vecchia in Lazio, will bring the taste of the Mediterranean to Faena Miami Beach for a special dinner hosted at Los Fuegos as part of the official festival. Chef Magliulo, who has apprenticed with world-class chefs like Alain Ducasse and Gaetano Trovato, and is known for transforming traditional Italian recipes into contemporary creations thanks to his deep passion for Mediterranean cuisine and a bent towards experimentation. His dishes are light and harmonious with a perfect balance of fragrances, flavors and colors. When creating and preparing his recipes, he respects two fundamental rules: Give the right value to the natural aspects of products and strengthen the ties with the land.

On February 26, foodies belonging to Faena’s art and culture-based private members club, Faena Rose, will have the opportunity to cook with Chef Magliulo during an exclusive, hands-on pasta-making master class at Faena Forum, where members will learn the time-tested techniques needed to make authentic pasta from scratch. And, of course there’s wining and dining. Rose members will taste a variety of pastas from the hand of Chef Magliulo while sipping on reserve red wines from the hills of Italy and Argentina. Read more about upcoming Faena Rose events on page 14 of this journal. For more information about Faena Rose, please contact rosemembership@faena.com. LAST CALL. FEBRUARY 15, 2018

Who Was Saint Valentine, And Why Do We Celebrate On February 14th? Many traditions, including those outside of Western cultures, connect February 14th with the reproductive cycle of birds, but the name still refers to a Saint worth remembering. One of the earliest of Christian saints, Saint Valentine was dealt an unfortunate destiny. Today, the patron saint of love and friendship is celebrated with flowers, love letters and chocolates. But the day has its own history. It’s related to the reproductive cycles of birds and agricultural traditions that long precede even Christianity. It’s important to remember that much of the Western calendar, as with St. Valentine’s Day, have its origins in the Roman culture—once called the “pagan” calendar. As with any syncretism, this date was preserved through its Christianization. The original rite are always worthy of note. Many of these days retain their almost-forgotten secrets within contemporary meanings, dating back centuries. Particularly in relation to fertility, they reveal intimate connections with the most primeval of agricultural traditions. Legend has it that Saint Valentine was one of the first martyrs sacrificed. He was executed by

Roger Hiorns. “Untitled (Alliance)”, 2010 Pratt & Whitney TF33 P9 engines that were once mounted on a Boeing EC-135 surveillance plane Effexor, Citalopram, and Mannitol. Dimensions variable

the Roman emperor, Claudius II, for refusing to abandon his Christian beliefs. Even worse, he officiated at the marriages of army soldiers knowing full well that the emperor had expressly prohibited the practice. The date of his death was February 14th. A second legend holds that he’s also the patron saint of lovers because his feast day coincided with the time of the year when birds begin the courtship rituals which lead to their mating. It’s a cycle intimately linked with planting and with the seasons of the year. The story needs little interpretation. As Claudius murdered the saint of love for his Christian faith, Pope Gelasius I, in later years, banned the Lupercalia (the Roman fertility celebration) and replaced it with the feast day of St. Valentine—a parallel celebration, albeit with a different name. In 1382, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a poem entitled Parlement of Foules, the first record we have of St. Valentine’s Day as the celebration of lovers; 18 years later, France’s Charles VI created a High Court of Love (based on precedents from Provencal and Italy), and where, on the first Sunday of each month and on St. Valentine’s Day, a series of tournaments was held in which participants competed to be matched with the maidens of the court. Another treasure in the history of love, the oldest known St. Valentine’s letter was written in 1416 by the French Duke, Charles of Orleans. After being captured at the Battle of Agincourt and locked in the Tower of London, he wrote his words of love to his wife, Bonne de Armagnac. The custom later spread throughout Europe and survived several attempts to suppress it by

Lutheranism and Protestantism. Eighteenth century England soon gave rise to something similar to today’s St. Valentine’s day: so-called Valentines. These were small postcards hand written and illustrated with plump Cupids and hearts, along with the custom of giving chocolates and romantic mementos. St. Valentine’s Day has today taken a new course, and it’s related to the economy and trade. More roses are bought on Valentine’s day than on any other day of the year. Quite likely, Valentinus, the saint killed by Claudius, could never have imagined to what his story would one day lead. It’s a story that should be remembered and which survives as one of our greatest sources of inspiration that remains priceless to this day.

FEELING GREAT BY DR. ROBERTA DEL CAMPO TIERRA SANTA HEALING HOUSE WELLNESS COLLABORATOR

GRATITUDE, YOGA, AND THE PATH TO JOY

When I think of February, I think of Valentine’s Day. This is a day to celebrate love, compassion, goodness and joy. It is a day during which you want to feel your best. Here are some simple skincare tips to get your skin looking and feeling great for this special day. Exfoliate both face and body paying special attention to rough areas such as your feet, elbows, and knees. An exfoliator with small beads is more gentle on the skin than a harsh scrub. Exfoliate a couple of nights prior to V-day which gives your skin time to settle down by February 14th. Follow your exfoliation with a hydrating cream, preferably containing ceramides. My two favorites are Eucerin Intensive Repair and Cerave Moisturizing Cream. Use a hydrating serum to plump up your skin and a vitamin C fortified serum to add radiance to your facial skin. Use an eye cream with hyaluronic acid. This will help to smooth fine lines and add a plumping effect. Say hello to smooth skin and eyes that appear bright and well-rested. Lip care is a must! Use your favorite lip balm (I use Aquaphor nightly to keep my lips hydrated) and remember to moisturize your neck and décolleté. Don’t forget your hair. Shiny, healthy hair is a show stopper. Consider using a hydrating hair mask a couple days before V-Day, followed by a light hair oil serum to keep your locks hydrated, strong and shiny. I am obsessed with Miracle Fruit Seed Hair Oil. It is a non-greasy, natural hair oil that doesn’t weigh hair down and makes your hair softer, smoother, shinier, silkier, stronger and more manageable. Smile, smile, smile! We have all heard the saying “Happy girls (and boys) are the prettiest.” I couldn’t agree more.

To book a consultation with Dr. Del Campo, please email spamiami@faena. com or call 786 655 5570. In-house guests may dial Tierra Santa at 3217 for more information.

BY TIM FELDMANN CO-FOUNDER, MIAMI LIFE CENTER A daily act of appreciation, gratitude and contentment is called Santosha in yoga. Recommended as a personal daily observance, this Santosha promises joy and happiness in return. However, we often find ourselves in a negative cycle of thinking, focusing on what we want, need or lack. In the ‘Realm of Wanting,’ it is difficult to be happy and fulfilled.

Heart Month Tierra Santa Healing House has a full month of exciting events focused on the heart, healing and personal growth. Join Tierra Santa Spa Director Agustina Caminos on February 14th for an intimate Valentine’s Day-inspired Twin Hearts Meditation and Purification. Celebrating love and friendship, the two-hour ritual guides guests through a peaceful mediation designed to open the heart and crown chakras, allowing the expansion of positive energy into your physical and emotional being. Come with a lover, a friend, or by one’s self. On February 17th, certified practitioner Ruben Tartaglia will lead a small group workshop that focuses on the recognition and resolution of Family Constellations to achieve success in business, at our jobs and in our own personal lives. On February 18th, Tartaglia reaches deeper into constellations related to family, trauma and health with the intent of releasing blocks to profound healing. Developed by renowned psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, the concept of ‘family constellations’ invites us to explore the effects of unresolved conflicts from past family members and how they relate to our own spiritual well-being with the goal of releasing participants from these past experiences. In honor of Heart Month, our Tierra Santa Wellness Collaborator Dr. Juan Rivera shines a light on cardiovascular disease prevention.

On February 23rd, the board-certified internist and cardiologist will host a candid conversation about heart attacks and insidious cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Rivera will also provide answers to frequently asked questions regarding heart health and share tips for early detection and prevention, treatment options, statistics, risks, and surgical options. Yoga’s antidote is appreciation. Take a pause, sit quietly and work on your state of mind. Alternatively, chose a task which cultivates Santosha—for example, write five to ten concrete things for which you are grateful today. Acknowledge the gift of your eyes with which you can read this short text and hopefully instigate vital new inspiration to your life. Acknowledge your primary needs are met—food, clothes and shelter—along with other endless gifts often considered birth right. With a renewed sense of appreciation for the things we mostly take for granted, humbleness is refilled and peace can set in. All in all, yoga urges us to get back to gratefulness for the small stuff and the big stuff. Through the sweet practice of gratitude, taking a moment to truly feel and being grateful for what we have, we can begin to access the internal state of Santosha, disconnect it from circumstantial events and make ourselves self-sufficient in states of joy and happiness. It is then, in this internal state of active appreciation, we realize that choosing joy and happiness inside is the only way forward towards having our needs fulfilled. Give it a try!

The colorful tradition of Carnival dates back centuries when Catholics in Italy would host a riotous masked ball before the first day of Lent when they were expected to give up meat (“carnevale”) for a solemn period of fasting. Over time, the practice spread to other Catholic countries in Europe including Portugal, France and Spain, who then brought it to the Americas during colonization and the slave trade, where it fused with African and indigenous rituals and traditions. Today, famous Carnival celebrations can be found throughout South America, including Brazil, Colombia and Argentina; in Caribbean countries like Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the Dominican Republic; and in large North and Central American cities. Each multi-day festival varies depending on the region. The Rio Carnival, which has been billed as “one of the biggest shows on earth,” attracts millions of revelers from around the world with its famous samba schools parading through the streets on flamboyant floats pulsing with live music, choreographed

dancing and over-the-top costumes. Argentina’s week-long Andean carnivals in Salta and Jujuy meld Spanish colonial customs and indigenous traditions that include paying tribute to Pachamama (Mother Earth), enthusiastic partying, and the unearthing and burial of a symbolic devil figure representing sin. And for the most famous carnival in the northern hemisphere, look no further than Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana, where African-Americans mixed with French settlers and indigenous communities to create one of the most epic and animated Carnival festivals in the United States.

Sultry tango, succulent steak and velvety wine are the trifecta passions that made Argentina famous, and now international travelers staying at Faena Hotel Buenos Aires enjoy tax-free bookings on any room or suite, as well as breakfast when it’s included in the room rate. The 21% VAT tax is automatically refunded when a foreign guest pays with an international debit card, credit card or wire transfer, offering savings that can spent on immersing themselves in the local culture with a traditional Sunday Asado barbecue at El Mercado or a red-hot Rojo Tango show at El Cabaret theater.

Live like The Great Gatsby in one of Faena’s Penthouse Residences. To make his late-Decomeets-South-American-flair come to life, Alan Faena enlisted award-winning husbandand-wife duo filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and set designer Catherin Martin, who together expressed their creative genius through showstopping interiors. With sales starting at $2.4 million, the residences come with top-flight design and a host of amenities. Crowing the top two floors of the property, the units, ranging from 860 to 3,310 interior sq. ft., feature stunning ocean views, spacious outdoor terraces and luxury appliances. Each home is elegantly outfitted with handcrafted furnishings from Côté France, as well as museum-quality custom wood furniture from master designer Frank Pollaro, who is famous for his collaborations with actor Brad Pitt. There’s also a five-bedroom, six-bathroom Duplex Penthouse stretching over 14,000 sq. ft. with breathtaking 360degree panoramas and extensive entertaining spaces including a chef’s kitchen. In addition to a 24-hour concierge, delivery service, a Faena Rose membership, and discounts throughout the Faena District, residents have access to the hotel’s outstanding amenities, which earned it the top spot as the #1 Hotel in the United States and Miami Beach by Condé Nast Traveler readers in the publication’s 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards. “This hotel thoughtfully layers and mixes all the things I love and most care for, all the things I learned from my travels and life experiences, making them accessible and inspiring for people to live better and more creative lives,” said founder Alan Faena.
