BART RAMAKERS Bart Ramakers (1963) creates a new mythology for a new world with his picturesque scenes, statues and movies. He grew up in Belgium, at the banks of the river Meuse, in the shadow of the Van Eyck brothers, Rubens and Rembrandt – and choose to study history. From childhood, he drew, etched and painted, inspired by the Flemish Masters, by historical stories, classical myths, legends, baroque and romantic music and opera. His works reflect on the human condition and unfold new myths of beauty and power, passion and betrayal, sensuality and brutality, life and death, often with a slightly ironic, sarcastic or humorous touch. The male/female relationships are often reversed, and Christian morality of suffering and redemption is replaced by enjoying an optimistic and generous love. Not suffering will save the world, but love. Creating a better world is the common thread in everything he does, wether it is by writing his own version of the New Testament or by inventing Automats for a New World. The traditional long-bearded God in Bart Ramakers’ globalised heaven joins forces with his male and female colleagues from all times and from all over the world, and even with the young goddesses of climate protest. Nudity for him is not inasmuch a matter of erotics, it’s the key to a world of truth, where nothing is hidden or conceiled. References to art history, film and literature are abundant. Bart Ramakers has published several books and exposes all over Europe. He regularly collaborates on projects with well-known artists from other disciplines and continues to evolve undaunted in his work.
