Everyone is from someplace else. You grew up in Kansas. Do you feel coming from the mid-west gave you a sensibility that keeps you grounded when you’re surrounded by fashion, fame and fortune?

There is no question that where we are from, our history, forks who we are...and being from Salina, Kansas is the polar opposite of the life that I got when I moved to New York in January 1983! But no doubt, being from the Midwest and having a “relatively” traditional upbringing, has informed my entire career. Everything about my past was “middle.” I recognize, now, how lucky I was.

One thing that fascinates us is that you embrace the high and low, the unexpected. Not only in your daily attire, but in your work. You’ve worked with Neiman Marcus and JC Penney.

I think that goes back to my firmly “middle” upbringing.

The interesting thing about how I grew up was, we weren’t rich and we weren’t poor. And I think that sensibility has permeated all of my choices. I have had the good fortune to work for some of the most glamorous and luxurious stores and brands, and also some of the most “basic.” In a certain way, they are exactly the same, everyone wants to look and feel better. And I always say that we had the same discussions at Neiman Marcus as we did at JC Penney.Can you give us a bit of background on how your career evolved?

How did you meet our Contributing Editor, Candice Solomon?

I met Candice maybe about four years ago. She started following me on Instagram and one day she invited me for a drink in the strangest of places! The Delegates Lounge at the UN! That’s classic Candice! Not only does she have an eye for cultivating the most talented people, she knows how to intrigue with locations that add to any exchange and experience.

A Harvard Law degree, a successful interior design business, celebrity clientele, a collaborative collection of luxury fashion accessories with the likes of Kenny Scharf, not to mention you’ve authored an award winning, bestselling book on art and design. What’s a typical day

I wake up really early, between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., to get my work out in. This keeps me aligned and focused. I meditate, and I pray too, every day.

To have the energy and stamina I need to do what I do, these things are non-negotiable for me. They set the course and the foundation for my days. Pre-pandemic, in a typical day I would see maybe around 10 or more exhibitions in galleries or museums. I would

You’re a trusted advisor on “the art” of collecting art. Explain your philosophy about buying art.

We’ve heard the phrase, “I don’t know about art, but I know what I like.” Is it okay to buy something simply because we like it without weighing the future value?

Of all of your accomplishments, is there one that

There are many ways to collect art. Some people start when they are young, buying what they can,

and as they get older and make more money, they set larger, annual budgets to keep collecting, until one day they have such a massive collection that they open a foundation. There are people who are happy to have their house full of art but don’t feel a need to keep buying just to put it in storage, so they stop there.

Here’s my philosophy, if you have some money to spend in art and you don’t know the market, educate yourself by going to galleries and art fairs. Or get an art advisor to guide you on what holds or could hold value, versus what is just random. It’s a myth that every good art piece is an expensive one. I’ve collected artists whose work I paid $1000 for at the time, and years later those that work was worth $50,000. At different levels of acquisition, I’ve done that with all of my clients.

Your 2016 exhibition, Greek Gotham, aimed to draw parallels between the Ancient and Classical Greek Civilizations and New York City as it is today. Is there another city that could fit into this parallel?

Greece wasn’t a unified country 5,000 years ago. It was formed by city-states like Athens, Sparta, and Corinth. Most of the cultural, political, and artistic developments happened in Athens but the other citystates also had an incredible group of people who contributed to all these incipient movements. When we look back in history, we talk about the reasons the Greek Empire was so powerful. They operated at the intersection of Europe, Asia and Africa. This cultural diversity was crucial for their development.

The Greeks took from all these different civilizations and created their own. New York City is also like this.

People here are from everywhere. We have boroughs that are extremely diverse. We have thinkers and professionals in every possible industry, giving their best ideas for the development of their fields.

I don’t think there is any city in the world like New York. Maybe London?

How long can it take for a great idea for a collection/collaboration take to come to fruition?

A great idea for a collaboration in any form, whether it’s a product, exhibition, or a TV show, takes time and effort. Products take the shortest time but are the hardest, in a way, because you have to deal with factories and your center of control shifts. A good and ambitious exhibition could take anywhere between six months to one year, especially if we are talking about different countries.

Have you had any projects fall through, was there “one that got away?”

Oh yes! About three years ago, Stuyvesant, the number one public high school for math and science in Manhattan, hired me to design an innovation center.

I had several meetings with school officials and staff.

I convinced Brian Donnelly (aka KAWS) to come with me to one of the meetings so he could paint a mural on a wall that would become the centerpiece in the center. He was charging a symbolic amount for the work, compared to what his paintings and sculptures go for. A couple of weeks after those meetings,

the school called me to say that they couldn’t justify paying for the mural. So I dropped out of the project.

A year later KAWS would become one of the most sought-after contemporary artists and his work broke every record at auction. The school regretted their decision big time.

Design is such an important aspect of our lives. If it’s good design, we might not even notice something that fits so seamlessly into our lives. Can you name something you feel fits into this? For example, Steve Jobs was obsessed with fonts.

I have to refer back to Steve Jobs because he wasn’t just obsessed with fonts, he was obsessed with seamless design. One of his greatest inspirations for the iPhone was the Bauhaus movement. Everything is seamlessly connected. Harvard Law School was designed by Walter Gropius, the founder of Bauhaus. I remember being inside of those clean-line buildings were nothing was extra, the buildings were exactly what they needed to be without the adornments, for example, of the Greek revival libraries. The iPhone is just a perfectly simple and elegant piece of design that is a technology miracle at the same time.

With such a glamorous lifestyle, what are your wardrobe must haves?

Oh, I don’t think my lifestyle is so glamorous! I like to think that I’m part of a cultural dialogue where I can speak my voice and influence with ideas that bring positive impact to my clients and to my audience.

Of course, I love to dress up for a fun occasion or party. I love expressing myself through clothes and fashion. I’m very partial to Isabel Marant. I’ve been a fan long before she had a store in every city. Even with the massive distribution that she has, I love and buy her clothes because they never go out of fashion. I still wear some jackets and dresses I bought 15 years ago from her first boutique in Paris that are still in my closet.

Since the beginning of time, humans have been making art. From prehistoric petroglyphs to Andy Warhol’s pop art soup cans, what defines something as art. Does the phrase “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” translate to art?

tors, as well as the Romans, who copied everything the Greeks did, and for painters and sculptors of the Renaissance era. But as we moved forward in history, the impressionists started to change the realist approach, the search for beauty, into more of a question of creativity and innovation. They were looking for the novel. Cubism, which was the most influential art movement of the 20th Century and

continues to be an influence today, wasn’t looking for beauty. It was a deconstruction of forms to bring something new to art. So “beauty is in the eye of the holder,” if beauty is what you’re looking for. But for artists, the question of beauty is a very personal one.

Some artists aren’t looking for beauty. A conceptual artist like Marcel Duchamp had other concerns in mind. Art changes, and artists are the greatest his-

torians. They’re creating in physical form what mirrors the world outside of them. They have always had their fingers on the pulse. That’s what’s most amazing about art. The representation of the moment.

oving to New York from Jamaica aged five was a revelation. “The snow was

better than I imagined,” he recalls. “As soon as I saw it, I ran outside in my pajamas.” A keen horticulturalist, his love of the outdoors and vibrant colour are met in his cultivation of hydrangea and geraniums. It’s one facet of his continual quest for beauty, which he believes is all around us. He works to advocate expression and inclusive beauty practices. WHEN DID YOU START DOING MAKEUP? I remember purchasing all of my MAC from you on Christopher Street and I was so intrigued by your upbeat personality I purchased everything.

EXCLUSIVE I N T E RV I E W I started doing makeup as a college student at F.I.T. in New York. I began as a fashion design major. I then moved to Japan and interned with key makeup artists and my passion was ignited. After five years I returned to New York and started working for M·A·C. I’ve been at M·A·C now for more than 26 years and have been perfecting the art of makeup for over 30 years.

ROMERO DID EVER WANT TO WORK IN THE MOVIE OR TELEVISION INDUSTRY. I have done some small mini movie projects one being “The Legend of Lady White Snake” starring fashion icon Daphne Guinness. Last year I worked on a Netflix fashion program called “Next In Fashion” and I would love to do more like that. It was so exciting to create makeup to help the contestants fashion collection.

CAREER. Global travel is incredibly inspirational and being introduced to different cultures is exhilarating. I have facilitated masterclass in many pockets of the world.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BUDDING MUA’S It is critical to always continue working at your craft and educate yourself, develop new skills, and aspire to innovate. Especially today, it’s imperative to learn the nuances of social media to authentically deliver who you really are. Always be true to yourself and use your platform as a way to express yourself visually and make connections globally.

wear any makeup. The black clothes are the traditional clothing of Korea and they are usually used in funerals when it comes with the armband on the right arm. The ceramic memorial tablet has a single word:

which is a word used to be written

before the dead person’s name. The reason there’s no specific name is that I wanted to describe Death is always with us, not only for certain people but all beings. Each photograph tied on the body represents all the memories we share during our lives.

To summarize the artworks in one sentence once again, we are all sinking ships.

velyn Trista Baik is a Creative Director and Photographer based in Toronto, Canada. She was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea and fin-

ished her second year in Seoul Women’s University in 2018. Based on her artistic backgrounds she has—she studied Korean Traditional Music (majored Haegeum, which is a Korean Traditional Violin-typed instrument) back in her middle school ages—she expanded her interest in creating and producing media artworks while studying literature (especially poems) in Korea.

She is now in third-year photography programme at OCAD University and her works have been published in more than 20 magazines worldwide so far, starting from 2020.

What made you decide to study photography?

Everything starts from movies and dramas. I loved watching those media arts from my early ages and those interests didn’t stop at the stage of just merely watching them. When I discover any movies or dramas which captured my all attention, I started to read out the scripts of the works, keep watching the same thing again and again. Then one day, I realized I was comparing the difference between the script’s written description and actual screen’s work, and I could even find myself imagining and producing my own direction in my mind. At the moment I firstly dreamed to produce the media arts, and found out I’ve been also interested in taking photographs of daily life stuffs and turning them into a special mood. So I decided to combine those two interests—by using a media called camera, let’s start creating my own dream world. This is how all happened.

How do you develop your artworks?

Most of my artworks come from two major medium: my dreams and my scars. I used to remember what happened in my dreams last night, and I loved recording them in my diaries and create a story with a slight of imagination I add later on. This becomes the first

foundation of my works.

Another foundation is my scars. As everyone has a bad, painful memories that we would like to forget.

I, as well, have those dark memories and therefore I’ve walked through a long dark way so far. Lots of my artworks come from this memory. I usually describe some religious and mysterious, fantasy-like imagination related to death, and what I aim for is just to give a hope to many desperate and miserable people that death itself is not the end, there’s always a light still existing in our lives.

What is your final goal as an artist?

I was desperate. I mean, I was desperate to find the reason to live. After a long wandering, I finally found the way. I finally found my reason to breathe more.

I was motivated from lots of artist who are silently walking their own path in their own lives. Therefor I’d like to be a motivation from another desperate people out there. I’d like to help people find their reasons to live. I hope my arts could be a nice warm bridge to them.

You developed an interest for fashion and photography early on, however prior to your photography career you studied architecture at Technische Universität Darmstadt. When did you realise your passion lied with photography?

From early on in my childhood I always loved photography. My older brother studied art and was a photo enthusiast. When I was about 8 years old he made me his “photo assistant”. Back then he already taught me how to use F-stops and shutter speeds etc.

However, after finishing high school, I decided to study architecture. It seemed like a great combination of both artistry and academia. As much as I loved the architectural studies, I always felt that my true passion lied with photography. This created a great inner conflict for me because I knew that I had to decide how I wanted the rest of my life to look like.

When I took a trip to visit New York City for the first time, it was then I realised I wanted to be a photographer in New York. It’s hard to describe, but on that first day arriving in NY, I knew that this was where I wanted to be. Since then, I have studied and resided in another country, on another continent. I really had no idea how or what I was doing, I just knew that I had to somehow follow my calling.

Two months after this initial trip, I returned to NY with a dream, a suitcase and a borrowed camera.

Ever since then it’s my home.

Born in Germany but currently residing in New York City, does your heritage play a part in your art?

I am sure it does, we all get influenced by our environment and the formative childhood years are the most influential ones. I always like my compositions to be balanced, grounded and on the heavy / darker side. I have problems with loose and light things - maybe that’s where my German upbringing comes in.

Shortly after arriving as an ambitious photographer in NY, you secured a billboard campaign on Times Square. How did this feel? And can you tell us a bit about this campaign?

I remember it felt very surreal seeing my photo on a 10 x 20 meter, gigantic billboard on Times Square!

But at the same time it made me realise that it’s for real now. I remember looking up to the billboard and saying to myself: “Wow, you are actually doing it! This is not some crazy little dream anymore, your picture is on a billboard on Times Square, the center of the world.”

The campaign was for a men’s fashion line, photographed with 3 male models. It was actually rather controversial. Hahaha, I am just going to leave it like this.

You have also received international acclaim through numerous solo exhibitions across the globe such as; Frankfurt, Berlin and Shanghai.

Have you visited all of these countries personally?

If so, what has been your favourite and why?

Yes, absolutely! I make a point to be present for the opening of every solo exhibition that I have done, even if it means flying half way across the globe. I really think that it is important for artists to be at their openings.

It’s also an immensely rewarding feeling to witness people visiting your show, asking questions and being interested in the thought process behind your work.

It’s the best!

I must say that two of my favorite countries I have been to are China and India. There is just so much to explore and learn. With cultures that are entirely different to my own European/American heritage, it heightens the contrast, both shocking and fascinating at the same time. This said, these are not countries that I would recommend for a relaxed vacation, hahaha.

Your work has been published in an array of infamous magazines and publications including; Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle etc. What achievement or highlight are you most proud of?

EXCLUSIVE I N T E RV I E W I am extremely proud of the number of covers I have shot for major magazines around the world. It’s really tough for me to pinpoint one highlight or achievement, this said I am definitely grateful that I was able to shoot with legends such as the artist Christo, Helmut Newton, Meg Ryan, Jeffrey Wright, Salma Hayek, etc. The art series that I did with Tyra Banks was also definitely another big highlight!

When did you first fall in love with art?

My brother was an art student and he was very influential to me, introducing me to painting, sculpture and photography very early on. I remember sometimes sneaking into his room and looking through his fascinating collection of books and magazines.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

A lot of my inspiration comes from my favorite place on earth, New York City. It was love at first sight and this love affair is still alive many years later. I live and breathe NY, it inspires me every day. No matter what the current problems and challenges are, New York will always be New York.

You specialize in both fashion and beauty photography. What do you love about captur-ing flawless headshots and beautiful garments?

I have always loved art, beauty and fashion. Even as a child, I was already fascinated with beautiful Hollywood stars and absolutely loved playing with my older sisters Barbies’, dressing them up in all these amazing outfits.

Hahaha, I guess I kind of made that my profession.

What has been your favourite camera to shoot with and why? Vintage or modern?

I mostly shoot on a Canon 5D Mark IV and I love it! It’s an amazing and versatile camera. When it comes to incredible digital quality for very large exhibition prints I preferably use Phase One, the highest resolution digital camera system in the world. If you ask me about my favorite camera of all time, it’s my vintage Mamiya 88

RZ 67 medium format film camera. I dragged this heavy and bulky piece of equipment from African deserts to Central American rainforests. Nothing comes close to her.

As a creative, you must have tried various techniques and skills when perfecting your art. Are you still learning/discovering new ways of shooting and creating?

Absolutely! I love learning, discovering and experimenting. I think if you stop being open to learning and experimenting, you stop being creative.

It definitely has changed and evolved a lot over time.

Even though I think part of my vision has remained consistent, it’s like a base to build on.

You have worked with many successful stars such as; Tyra Banks, John Legend, Meg Ryan and Salma Hayak to name a few. What has been your favourite celebrity to shoot? Are there any other celebs you would love to work with?

It’s really difficult for me to pick out one particular celebrity as my favourite. I worked with a lot of remarkable people, and each one of them has something unique and inspiring they bring to the table.

However, if I do have to select one, I would go with Tyra.

We both really enjoy working with each other and every time we do, something special comes out of it. Over the years we have shot 11 international Cosmopolitan covers together, as well as many magazine editorials and an exciting art project called Tyra 15.

You have created numerous striking images and works of art over the years. Do you have any one 90

If so, why?

I think just like a good parent doesn’t really favour any of his / her children, an artist doesn’t favour any one piece of his work. They are all special to him in their own way.

We would love to hear what you are currently working on? Are there any exciting new projects you have coming up?

I am actually doing the pre-production for a big ad campaign shoot at the moment. I can’t really reveal any details as of yet. All I can say is that I will be shooting and video directing a Hollywood royalty, an A-list star and I am extremely excited about it!

What are your hopes and dreams as a stylist and creative director?

My goal as a stylist and creative director is to dress the biggest stars, raising them to a whole new fashion level. I want my looks to be recognised worldwide as a KYO Jino signature and develop the artistic direction for a variety of artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Affairs awarded Rodez an Artist Enhancement grant to promote his art internationally. As a result, Rodez has exhibited in: Florence, Italy; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and in Spain seven times, including at the Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona, while participating in international exhibitions throughout the United States.

Rodez is a self-taught artist whose strength is his diversity, allowing himself the freedom to create multiple bodies of work, each vastly different from the other.

In his experiences with his mother’s mental illness, including multiple personalities, Rodez observed that each personality had a different strength and function, each serving a unique purpose. Rodez has taken that lesson and incorporated it into his art, with each body of work providing him different experiences and allowing all his personalities to show through. Rodez insists that an artist must explore the infinite possibilities with which he is presented, and is compelled to use his ar-

tistic creativity to the maximum potential, never giving eorge Rodez doesn’t always paint what people want or expect him to paint, but rather his paintings tell him what they want to be. In the

words of Pablo Picasso, Rodez believes, “the painting is stronger than me, it always gets me to do what it wants” and “a painter is a man who paints what he sells, an artist, however, is a man who sells what he paints.” Rodez is an artist who believes that transition and flexibility are necessary elements for an artist to grow.

George Rodez was born in Manhattan, New York on March 20, 1957. Soon after, because of a family illness, he was sent to live with his grandparents in Havana, Cuba. In 1960 he was reunited with his parents, and even though he enjoys traveling and exhibiting around the world, he is proud to call Miami, Florida his home.

Although he began his career as a mechanical engineer, art has been his passion since the age of thirteen. He now dedicates himself solely to painting and since 1992 has displayed much of his work throughout various museums and galleries nationally and internationally. In 2005, the Florida Division of Cultural

Rodez enjoys and believes in participating to help the community by making art contributions to raise money for charitable organizations. On November 21, 2006, former Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen recognized Rodez and stated “The dedication shown to the arts and your involvement in fund raising for charitable organizations through your generous art contributions is truly commendable.”

Some of the organizations

Rodez has contributed to most recently include the American Red Cross, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, National Kidney Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and the list goes on with over 150 organizations having benefited from Rodez’s art contributions.
