From the Director The enduring mission of the Academy of Medical Educators is to support the people who carry out and advance the education mission of UCSF. This includes both our front-line teachers, staffand education leaders and scholars. Supporting our faculty is more critical than ever in the current environment with uncertainty about the future of education, science and health care, as well as a 5% budget cut this year across the whole University of California system. The Academy supports faculty and staff in a number of ways. Teaching excellence is recognized through our Excellence in Teaching Awards, Excellence in Interprofessional Teaching Awards and education mentoring through our newest Excellence in Mentoring Awards. Staff (individuals and teams) are recognized with the Jaclyne Witte Boyden Staff Awards (front line staff) and the Award for Exceptional Service in Medical Education (education staff). Acceptance into the Academy of Medical Educators recognizes exceptional educators at UCSF. We meet regularly as an academy to build community and nurture our educational work, as well as to build skills. Our Innovations Funding in Education Program provides internal grants for junior faculty to do curricular innovation. Unfortunately, this program will be cut in half this year due to the budget cuts. We co-host the annual Education Showcase with the broader Center for Faculty Educators to allow faculty and learners to present abstracts on their curricular innovation and education scholarship with a plenary focused on education scholarship. The Cooke Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning rewards the two best abstracts from the showcase. We have a robust education endowed chair program (23 chairs plus the Irwin Chair for the Academy Director) that support Academy members to do creative work for a five-year term. Due to a generous gift from Ed and Carole Kim, we also have a Kim award to support wellness for two AME members every year. The Academy continues to explore and develop ways to support educators and education at UCSF. To that end, I would like to highlight the important efforts of our Education Advocacy Group and our Jaclyne Witte Boyden Staff Awards Committee over the past year. The Academy Tackles Education Advocacy The Academy of Medical Educators launched its first interest group in 2019, the Finance Interest Group (FIG), Co-Chaired by Academy members Susannah Cornes and Erick Hung. In 2025 this group transitioned to the Education Advocacy Group. (EAG). The purpose of the EAG is to build a community of educators and finance leaders engaged in supporting education within departments, the School of Medicine, and other Schools across the campus. The group aims to share best practices, advocacy, by supporting education from a mission-based management perspective, and to develop a resource pool for educators, finance leadership, and staff. The group’s relaunch with a broader message of advocacy was presented at the Academy of Medical Educators winter meetings in February 2025. The meeting generated discussions about educator needs and community building opportunities using reflection tools and small group conversations. In the winter meetings and in follow up quarterly meetings, the group has centered its discussions on why faculty decline teaching opportunities with a goal of identifying areas for advocacy to meaningfully support educators and elevate teaching as a valued mission across UCSF. Several critical pressures affecting faculty ability to teach have been identified: increasing clinical productivity demands, lack of recognition and promotion support, logistical hurdles such as parking and scheduling, and fewer sustained connections with learners in the post-COVID environment. To address these pressures, the group has identified high-impact areas for advocacy that span multiple domains: expanded faculty development and coaching programs, increased recognition and rewards for teaching excellence, stronger logistical and administrative coordination, and innovative teaching models with more continuity. Importantly, the group has specific recommendations — including clearer advancement pathways, integration of educational effort into compensation models, and enhanced educator voice in institutional decision-making — setting the stage for culture change at the system level. This important advocacy work can only be done through active partnership with leaders across the professional schools and health systems to position education as a shared institutional priority. This work underscores a central message: when faculty are supported and valued as educators, learners thrive — and the academic mission is strengthened. This roadmap provides a clearer, coordinated approach to ensuring the future of sustainable and meaningful teaching across the health professions. Moving forward, EAG has hosts quarterly meetings to advance these advocacy priorities. The EAG meetings are open to all Academy members and the group continues to grow as a hub for faculty interested in its updated advocacy mission. Recognition for our Educational Staff The Jaclyne Witte Boyden Award (Boyden Award), started more than twenty years ago, continues to recognize staff for their excellence in service to health professions education at UCSF and awards professional development funds to staff members. The exciting aspect of this award is how it has evolved over the past 20 years from individual staff members to include team-based awardees and recognize collaboration among staff across the campus in all schools. This includes expansion for the Office of Medical Education (OME) with the addition of two new awards offered to medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and dentistry staff. The award also given as a team award for teams from any school who work together and collaborate in health professions education. These staff members don't have to be in the same unit and can work together across units and across any of the other schools. We have been very excited that this award has included our other schools outside of the School of Medicine and contributes to the overall education mission at UCSF. In May of 2025, Jaclyne Boyden, retired in Florida, reached out to the Academy and donated additional funding for the award. This gift allowed the Academy to present an additional team award at our recent staff recognition presentation ot the Celebration of New Members. It's an amazing opportunity to see the evolution of staff recognition in health professions education and medical education. It has been shown that staff recognition can improve well-being of staff at UCSF. We're very grateful for Jaclyne Boyden's continued financial support. Offering extra funds for staff during these times is generous and we are so fortunate to give more recognition to UCSF staff for their contribution to UCSF’s mission. Innovations Funding in Education The Innovations Funding in Education Program is the Academy’s flagship effort to support junior faculty, giving emerging educators the flexibility and resources to pilot bold, creative ideas that strengthen teaching and improve the learning experience at UCSF. As faculty demand grows and operating funds decline, endowed philanthropic support has become essential to sustaining this work. The Innovations Funding Endowment, built through the generosity of current and former Academy leaders and members, medical school alumni, and community partners, ensures that the Academy can continue offering an internal grants program open to all UCSF faculty. These grants support a wide range of priorities in teaching and learning, including curriculum design, assessment, simulation, faculty development, technology-enhanced learning, and equity-centered education.
