Charlotte C. Baer

Memorial Award

The Charlotte C. Baer Memorial Award is presented annually to a volunteer clinical professor of the School of Medicine in recognition of distinguished service. This award is named in honor of Dr. Charlotte C. Baer (1908 - 1973), who was a practicing internist in San Francisco and a volunteer clinical professor for almost 30 years.

Dr. Baer was an outstanding clinician with exceptional humanistic qualities who served as a role model and teacher to hundreds of our students and residents. Access biography on Dr. Charlotte C. Baer.

A life of service and compassion: Honoring

As we gather to celebrate excellence in teaching, we also pause to honor the life and legacy of an extraordinary educator, physician, and colleague Dr. Brian Lin, who passed away this summer.

Dr. Lin was more than a gifted emergency physician at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco. He was a mentor, a builder of programs, and above all, a teacher in the deepest sense of the word. His passion for education and his devotion to his students shaped not only how they practiced medicine, but how they understood what it truly means to care for others.

From the earliest days of his career, Dr. Lin saw teaching as an act of respect. He believed that every learner deserved patience, presence, and kindness the same qualities he extended to his patients. He embodied the principle that how we teach is as important as what we teach.

In 2019, Dr. Lin helped create the KP Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship – San Francisco (KLIC-SF), a visionary program that allows third-year medical students to follow patients through multiple specialties, developing continuity, empathy, and accountability along the way.

(Continues next page)

This program stands as a living example of his belief that medicine is learned best through relationships relationships with patients, with mentors, and with one another.

In October 2020, during the COVID pandemic, Dr. Lin received the Charlotte C. Baer Memorial Award.

Beyond the classroom and the hospital, Dr. Lin’s generosity of spirit touched everyone who crossed his path. He was known for following up with students long after their rotations, for his humility, and for his unwavering commitment to helping others grow.

Dr. Lin reminded us that great teaching isn’t only about passing on knowledge it’s about modeling integrity, compassion, and curiosity. And in that sense, his lessons will continue to echo through every patient cared for, every student inspired, and every colleague reminded of the deeper purpose in what we do.

May we continue to teach and to serve with the same grace, humility, and dedication that Dr. Brian Lin so beautifully embodied.

Maxine Papadakis Awards for Faculty Professionalism and Respect

The Maxine Papadakis Awards for Faculty Professionalism and Respect advance UCSF values in medical education. These awards recognize faculty who are exemplars in treating students and all others in the clinical environment with professionalism, courtesy and respect.

Dr. Papadakis is Professor Emerita who retired in 2016 as Associate Dean for Students at UCSF School of Medicine. It was Dr. Papadakis’ work that led to the “respect” questions on the student evaluations of faculty.

We celebrate the faculty teachers in the core clinical rotations who are honored with these awards, as they significantly impact the clinical learning climate for our students.

Teach for UCSF Certificate

Program – Acknowledgment

Teach for UCSF is a program of the Center for Faculty Educators that requires a significant time investment on behalf of the participants, a testament to their commitment to their professional development as educators. Through day-long inperson sessions, participants experience a structured curriculum while networking with other educators. The program primarily targets UCSF faculty and volunteer clinical professors, with select certificates also open to staff and trainees. In 2024-25, we offered Certificates around 6 major themes: Educators Essentials, Clinical Teaching, Education Leadership, Interprofessional Teaching, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, and Simulation Teaching. In addition to Teach for UCSF, the Center for Faculty Educators offers a number of other faculty development activities and resources to support all who teach and supervise UCSF learners.
