STUDIO BRU.S.L.XL Dr. Petra Pferdmenges, Nele Stragier & Christopher Paesbrugghe initiated the studio BRU.S.L.XL @ KU Leuven (Sint-Lucas Architectuur) in 2015 to research through design with students from the Masterprogram into visions for the region of Brussels on multiple scales, concentrating upon a different urban area each academic year. Each semester,15-30 students come up collectively with a vision on the metropolitan urban scale (scale XL). Furthermore, groups of 5-6 students zoom into the scale of the neighbourhood (scale L). Finally each student develops an individual project (scale S). The projects are designed from within the existing spatial & social situation. They are designed as a process of change of the area from 2020 to 2025 to 2030 up to a nal vision for 2040.

LINE 28 This academic year the studio BRU.S.L.XL is reflecting upon urban architecture along the Line 28. In this first semester a group of 29 students worked around 5 nodes: Cureghem, Jacques Brel, Weststation, Beekkant and Osseghem. We selected the site because Alive Architecture is involved into the design team of the Stadsvernieuwingscontract 3. As such, it was possible to generate a link with multiple actors involved into the urban development on and around the site.

ACADEMIC PRACTICE The output of the STUDIO BRU.S.L.XL of the master stuents at KU Leuven is exhibited from January - March 2017 on the ground floor of Perspective. Brussels, the Brussels urban planning office. Multiple people of Perspective were part of the jury that took place on 11.1.2017 in the same place and follow-up seminars will be organized. Through generating such link between academic life and practice, we hope to generate impact upon the region of Brussels through the design research of our students.

OSSEGHEM The team strengthens the existing identity of agriculture and schools on the site, transforming the site of the gazometer into an educational center upon urban agriculture. The produced food can be enjoyed in a restaurant positioned on the groundfloor of the gazometer. The densification on the site embraces the existing character on the site.

BEEKKANT The vision of the team is to make use of the pollution and waste on and around the site. A vertical recycling tower serves productive ateliers in which existing materials are recycled into new projects that are sold in the shop. The rest materials will be burned into energy to lighten the park. The organic waste is transformed into biogas to heat the building. The organic waste of surrounding supermarkets will rst have a second life in a waste restaurant.
