Damien Horn Owner, Channel Islands Military Museum
Welcome
to our island.
I was lucky enough to have been born here on the Island of Jersey just over 60 years ago. Many things have changed in that time but the beauty of the Island still shines through even on a not so nice day.
My Father and his parents saw a different time in our Islands history and lived through the five years of German Occupation. This year on the 9th of May we will celebrate 80 years of Liberation, a freedom that is there for all to enjoy when you get out and about around our Island. Jersey has beautiful scenery, cliffs, valleys, beaches and dunes to explore. Even after a life in Jersey, I still find new places that I have not previously seen before. There is still lots more to discover. Visitors to the Island will only scrape the surface when here on holiday, which is why many chose to return time and time again.

A couple of mornings a week I have an early breakfast down at Colleens Café at Greve de’Lecq, where I am sure to bump in to a few local characters and have a chance to have a good old catch up. Looking out across the water, you take in the beauty of the bay. France is visible the distance, people are often swimming and the fisherman going out in their boats. Dogs are getting their walk and children enjoying a play on the beach. All very simple everyday things that we take for granted, but done in such a beautiful bay. Jersey has many such places around its coast and all with a different character and goings on; so much to see and do on such a small but interesting Island. Whether you walk, cycle take the
bus or use a car, you will be on a journey of adventure with something of interest around every corner.

One of the joys of the warm summer evenings is taking Monty our dog for a walk around the quiet Parish lanes around where we live and stopping off in a Parish pub, like out St Mary’s Inn. Observing the wildlife and scenery that changes with every passing day. The peace only broken by the very occasional car or passing the time of day with others also out for a stroll.
On a weekend its always nice to choose from one of the many great restaurants we have around the Island, even better if it has a view of the sea, like the one of St Brelade’s Bay from The Oyster Box. There is nothing better than spending a pleasant evening with friends, having a lovely meal out in great surroundings. It’s important to take time out from a busy week and enjoy the best of what this wonderful Island has to offer.
Damien’s Channel Islands Military Museum is housed in a German bunker that once formed part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall defences. Open April - October.

Where are you?
GET SET!
THINGS TO KNOW WHILE YOU’RE HERE
You’re on our beautiful little island in the English Channel but you’re a lot closer to France (around 14 miles at the closest point) than you are to England (closer to 100 miles). You’re surrounded by four other main Channel Islands; Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm and a handful of smaller inhabited and uninhabited islands. Our nearest coastal towns in France are Granville and the historic port of Saint-Malo. The term “Channel Islands” began to be used around 1830, possibly first by the Royal Navy as a collective name for the islands.
Bienvenue

Money
Pounds Sterling is the legal tender but we also have our own banknotes and coins which are classed as accepted tender elsewhere in the UK, people can take it, but they don’t have to - so don’t forget to spend your last few pound notes on souvenirs before you leave. If you forget though, a pound note also makes a great souvenir. Also, if you hold one of our bank notes up to the light you’ll not see a British king or queen in the hologram but the image of one of our own royalty.
Our Population
Since the last census in 2021 it’s estimated that our population has grown to around 103,267. You’ll find most of us in and around St. Helier leaving most of the northern, easterly and westerly parishes unspoilt and rural in nature. Roughly 50% of Jersey dwellers on the last census were locally born with 29% from the UK, 8% from Portugal/Madeira, 3% from Poland, 3% from Ireland, 1% from France and the rest from elsewhere.

GETTING ABOUT
Arriving and leaving
If you arrive by air you’ll be arriving at Jersey Airport in the west of the island. If you’re wearing your sea legs, you’ll have arrived in St. Helier, Jersey’s capital. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall although central St. Helier is only a short walk away. Scheduled ferries operate between the Channel Islands, England and France and for those with their own boat Jersey Marinas offer a whole host of services for which they’ve earned ‘5 Gold Anchor’ status, an internationally recognised accolade. www.ports.je / +44 (0) 1534 446000
Driving in Jersey
If you get lost, it’s worth bearing in mind that most locals won’t know where the A6 or B12 roads are, because all of our roads bear their own names in addition to these classifications. Your best bet? Point on a map or tell someone where you’re trying to get to! If you’re renting a car you’ll notice that the registration plate bears a white ‘H’ on a red background which denotes it as a hired vehicle. You’d best not flag down one of these for directions as they’re probably lost too. Like the United Kingdom, we drive on the left hand side of the road and all speed limits are posted in mph. The maximum permissable speed limit anywhere
is 40mph, with a large number of 30mph and 20mph zones. In the rural parishes you may also notice signs denoting ‘Green Lanes’ where the maximum speed limit is 15mph and right of way is given to those walking, cycling or riding horses. You’re also likely to come across a local driving phenomenon known as filter in turn. As you approach one, priority is given to traffic on your right. After they’ve made their move it’s your turn and traffic on your left will yield to you. It’s a great way to keep traffic flowing and once you see it in action it’ll all make sense. The mini roundabout at the bottom of Beaumont Hill is a prime example. Don’t panic, you’ll be fine!
Conduite
Parking
On street parking requires the use of either a yellow disc or Paycard (available from convenience stores and hire car pick up points) to be displayed inside the car as signposted. PayByPhone parking is a cashless parking service that allows you to pay for parking using your mobile phone. It is available in all paying public car parks.
Search the Apple or Android app store for ‘PayByPhone’.
Parking
Parking on yellow lines is prohibited at all times.
Multi-storey car parks also require Paycards with the exception of the Sand Street and underground Waterfront car parks which have ticket machines that accept both cash and cards as payment.

A2A Service: This service offers electric vehicles like the BMW i3, Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe, and vans that users can hire and return to the same location. Bookings can be made up to three months in advance through the EVie app, with options to rent by the hour, day, or week.

A similar facility is also available at Churchill Memorial Park which is one of their most popular locations. These two sites also house a Hippocamp chair which has proven popular among their younger wheelchair users. The Hippocamp chair races across the sand and skims along the water’s edge. A priceless experience all children should enjoy!
There are taxi ranks at the airport, harbour and around St. Helier. Different tariffs apply depending on time of day and day of the week. Payment in cash used to be preferred, but all taxis are now required to accept cards. Private hire cabs are also available to hire if you’re not near a taxi rank. Evie electric cars can be unlocked and hired with the EVie app.

BEACHLIFE
No matter how you spend your time on Jersey, you’ll no doubt want to feel either the sand between your toes or breathe in the fresh sea air as you explore our beaches and coves. They each have their own unique personality. Choose the one that’s right for you...
Anne Port NE
A quiet and rarely crowded east-facing stretch of sand that catches the morning and midday sun. 2
Archirondel NE
This popular beach with an excellent beach cafe is pebbly at first but sandy at low tide when the water stays shallow for some way out. East-facing, Archirondel loses the sun in the late afternoon. 2
Bouley Bay N
A winding hill leads down to this steep pebble beach with deep water for competent swimmers. The bay is home to one of Jersey’s scuba-diving schools. 4
Green Island SE
A locals’ favourite, this sheltered south-facing beach is a real sun trap where soft sand, rock climbing and rock pool adventures await. The tide goes out a long way, so take care with the swift incoming tide and pick times close to high water to enjoy swimming or paddling. 1
Beauport Bay
Grève de Lecq
NW
The most popular of the north coast beaches, Grève de Lecq’s sheltered sands and rockpools are ideal for families but lose the sun in the late afternoon. Don’t miss the excellent cafés and local pubs close by. Even in the winter months, some providers offer coasteering trips for guided cold-water dips! 9
Beauport SW
A real suntrap on the south coast, once you’ve wandered down the steep path from the car park and crossed the pebbles, you’ll reach a sheltered south-facing beach with golden sand and shallow turquoise water, ideal for swimming. 12a, 14 to St. Brelade’s Bay, then walk along the cliffs
A tiny fishing harbour with space to play on the sand, picnic or catch some sun, but more of a wild swim that some other beaches. Worth visiting for the excellent beach café. 4
Grouville Bay / La Rocque Harbour SE
A long stretch of sand that leads to Gorey harbour, with Mont Orgueil Castle as a backdrop. Plenty of parking, beach cafes and kiosks as well as a children’s beachside playground and soft sand make Long Beach a local favourite. 1a, 2
Bonne Nuit
N
St. Brelade’s Bay SW
The beautiful beach at St. Brelade’s Bay is one of the island’s busiest; a visitor favourite for its soft sand, safe swimming, beach activities and seaside eating. Voted as number three in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards, this stunning south-facing beach is in the sun for most of the day. 12a, 14
Havre des Pas S
Close to the centre of St. Helier, this sandy beach is worth a visit to see the architecture of the art deco pool, filled by the tide each day. The beach is easy to access, and safe for swimmers. 1
Rozel Bay NE
A small fishing village lined with beach huts and harbourside cottages, Rozel is more of a fishing harbour than a place to swim. But at low tide, Rozel’s small stretch of white sand is safe for children to play, just look out for the Rozel geese! 3
St. Aubin’s Bay SW
A crescent of south-facing sand from St. Helier to St. Aubin, the beach is in full sun for most of the day. With several beach cafes along the promenade front, look out for the softest sand around the Gunsite Café with jet ski hire close by. 12a, 14, 15
Ouaisné Bay
SW
This south west facing beach is the wilder contrast to the adjoining St. Brelade’s Bay. The beaches are connected at low tide, or cross the pine-rich headland and walk along the sea wall next to the protected Ouaisné Common towards locals’ favourite, The Smugglers Inn.. 12a
Plémont
A pristine sandy cove reachable by a long flight of steps, where the intrepid are rewarded with a stunning natural playground of rock pools and sea caves. There’s safe swimming when the sea is calm, and surfing when it’s wild. The beach is completely covered at high tide. It’s quite a walk down from the bus stop so pack sensible footwear! 8
Portelet Bay
SW
Climb down the long flight of steps and you’ll be rewarded with a sunny, sheltered and sandy beach circling Janvrin’s Tomb at the centre. Portelet Bay Beach Café serves excellent pizza throughout the season, and the pub at the top of the steps, the Old Portelet Inn is a family favourite. 12a
St. Ouen’s Bay
W
A magnificent beach and natural playground for surfers and adrenaline seekers. It’s where one of the oldest surfing clubs in Europe has its home and makes a stunning setting for beach walks. Swimmers should take care in the strong currents and stick to the flagged zones. The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the season. 22

Sorel headland to Devil’s Hole
Views to treasure and nature to savour
words
Mike Stentiford MBE
Jersey National Park
Almost seventy per cent of our coastline sits within the Jersey National Park, an official endorsement that guarantees enjoyment along some of the island’s most stunningly diverse land and seascapes.
Certainly for the enthusiastic walker, the winding network of north coast cliff paths, tracks, and wooded valleys ensures that time spent in this particular section of the ‘park’ delivers the very best of scenic pleasures. For those looking for
a challenging coastal hike that’s wickedly wild and wonderfully bracing, then the four-mile ‘up and downer’ between Sorel Point and Devil’s Hole is hugely recommended. To begin with, it’s an easy track to follow and, in addition to long views of our own unspoiled northern coastline, favourable visibility allows sneaky views of two of our main sister islands, Sark and Guernsey.
Once heading off along the welldefined footpaths from the Sorel headland, expect some extra close and friendly company - a flock of Manx-Loaghtan long-horned sheep and a dozen or more free-flying Redbilled choughs.
A WALK IN THE NATIONAL PARK
The results of their dual ‘residency’ have proved to be one of the island’s most environmentally satisfying achievements and one that certainly proves a prime natural asset to Jersey’s National Park.
The twin headlands of Sorel and Devil’s Hole are divided by the extremely attractive and deeply wooded Le Mourier Valley. Well worth a short detour at the base of the footpath is to follow the narrow stream down to the steeply rugged coastline where a narrow waterfall cascades into the sea.
The easy-to-follow cliff path then winds westward up to a grassy headland and eventually to the car park at Devil’s Hole. An extra bonus here is to follow the footpath leading past ‘the devil’ and down to a viewing platform overlooking an impressively deep cave. It’s a little jaunt of a climb back to the top again but, with the conveniently placed Priory Inn awaiting your pleasure, it’s a most rewarding one.

OFF ISLAND / day trips from Jersey
If you’re in Jersey for more than a couple of days, you can extend your trip further afield by taking in some other great destinations within a short boat ride. Whether it’s to the walled city of St. Malo on the French coast, the tranquility of Sark or the beauty of the remote outlying islands, grab a RIB, ferry or charter and head off for the day to add an extra element to your Jersey holiday!
GUERNSEY our sister isle, both similar in characteristic but unique in its own right. The Donkeys to our Crapauds, Guernsey has been described as the Harrods to Jersey’s Selfridges, a slightly older and more established, if a little quieter, location. The capital St. Peter Port is a pretty little town with a cobbled high street and a selection of local independant shops. The island’s coastal locations provide great walking or cycling destinations. For lunch, try Octopus for seafood with a view, The Hook for fresh sushi and grilled dishes, or Christies for classic British fare.
SARK Known for its dramatic cliffs, peaceful lanes, and stunning coastal views, it offers a unique escape from modern life. With no cars allowed, transport is by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. Sark boasts beautiful beaches, rugged walking trails, and a rich maritime history. It’s also the world’s first Dark Sky Island, making it ideal for stargazing. Despite its size, Sark has a strong sense of identity and community, offering visitors a rare blend of tranquillity, natural beauty, and old-world charm that’s hard to find elsewhere.

LES ÉCRÉHOUS are a group of islands and rocks situated six miles north-east of Jersey (eight miles from France). They form part of the Bailiwick of Jersey and are administratively part of the parish of St. Martin. The largest is Maitre Ile, 300 metres long and 150 wide. Only two others remain above water at high tide, Marmoutier, which is considerably smaller, and Blanche Ile, smaller still. There are now no permanent residents on the islands and there is no fresh water there. There are a small number of fishermen's huts, some used as holiday residences.
ST. MALO is just an hour away but presents an opportunity to experience life inside a unique French walled city. Just pulling in to port there is quite impressive as you take in the structure of this unique coastal enclave. In recent years, the town has developed and modernised infrastructure which has led to an increase of quality retail and hospitality offerings. Whether you’re looking for boutique shopping or moules frites, you’ll be satisfied. Check out the amazing La Java bar, filled with dolls and complete with bar stools swinging from the ceiling.
THE MINQUIERS "The Minkies," are a remote group of rocky islets 9 miles south, forming part of the Parish of Grouville. At high tide, only a few rocks remain visible, while low tide reveals vast sandbanks nearly the size of Jersey. There are a few stone cottages—the southernmost buildings in the British Isles and a toilet that’s great for a selfie. The Minquiers are a Ramsar-designated wetland, home to rich marine life and over 600 specieswatch out for the seagulls! In 1953, the International Court of Justice confirmed Jersey’s sovereignty over the islets, settling a Franco-British dispute.
Geoparks are outstanding places around the world that celebrate the links between people and the earth. Jersey is a strong contender for this special designation because of our island’s exceptional geology and unique cultural heritage which forms the breathtaking surroundings we enjoy every day.
As an ‘Aspiring Geopark’, Jersey is on track to achieving the special designation of a ‘Geopark.’ Explore Jersey’s diverse landscapes, uncover our unique heritage and be inspired by our remarkable seascapes – it’s all waiting to be discovered in our aspiring Geopark.
Did you know that Jersey is an
Aspiring Geopark?
A Geopark is about more than rocks. Each one is unique and tells the whole story of an area, right from the very beginning. There are 195 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 48 countries around the world. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture. The UNESCO Global Geoparks celebrate the links between people
and the Earth. Jersey hopes to be recognised as a unique place by being awarded Geopark status.
The aspiring Jersey Geopark Visitor Centre at Jersey Museum introduces the story of Jersey’s geological heritage and is the island hub for information on exploring Jersey to see first-hand how geology has shaped and influenced the Island we know today.

Cycling.
Explore the aspiring Jersey Island Geopark on two wheels, with a network of 15 mph ‘Green Lanes’ through the island’s countryside and miles of bicycle-friendly routes, a cycle ride is the perfect way to explore our unique island. Enjoy taking in the sights from the slow lane or challenge yourself with an uphill climb. We may be small, but we pack many diverse, beautiful and challenging cycle routes into our nine miles by five. You’ll be spoilt for choice for bike hire in Jersey, you’ll find mountain, leisure and road bikes and e-bikes if you’re looking for a little assistance.
Diving and Snorkelling.
Jersey’s shallow marine habitats offer an opportunity to explore the beauty and diversity that lies beneath the waves through the creation of snorkel trails at Portelet Bay and Bouley Bay. Portelet Bay boasts an element of isolation from the island, forming its own little oasis. A small islet located in the middle of the bay, Janvrin’s Tomb (or Île au Guerdain), is surrounded by water at high tide. Bouley Bay has long been the spiritual home of diving on the island and the trail there showcasing a range of habitats as well as a reef of kelp and seaweed stretching across the bay alongside a sandy seabed.
What makes our aspiring Geopark so special?
Geopark Ambassadors are Jersey locals who champion our unique landscapes and seascapes through their roles within our community and their passion for island life. Each Ambassador was asked about what makes this island such a remarkable place…

This bumblebee is a native pollinator to Jersey and can have active nests over winter. They nest underground often using small mammal holes with up to 500 workers in a nest. They can be found all over the Island, from gardens to sites of scientific interest.

Jersey is famous worldwide for its breed of cow, superior quality milk and the prized Jersey Royal new potato but the island can also be proud of an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce and a variety of skilled craftsmen and artists who create a range of excellent products. AIRPORT ED
Our foodie isle.
On an island which houses little more than 120,000 people we may appear to be small but when it comes to our foodie offering we would consider ourselves pretty mighty. What follows are just a handful of our brilliant eateries, if you’re here for just a few days… we can assure you that you won’t go hungry!
BREAKFAST AND BRUNCH
If I was asked for my death row meal I’d want at least one of those courses to be a dish you’d find on a breakfast menu. For years we’ve been told it’s the most important meal of the day, and who am I to disagree with Mr Kellogg’s. That said, if you’re hopping straight off the plane and into a hire car, take a trip down to St Ouen’s Bay to find some cracking all-day dining spots with a view of the sea. Whether that’s El Tico, Le Braye or Sands, they all have excellent varied menus which feature plenty of local produce.

If you’re starting your day and culinary journey in St Helier, just a few minutes walk from Liberation Station you’ll find The Pavillion - the home of an excellent brunch-based menu made with local produce.
A little way into the heart of St Helier you’ll find Locke’s, a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike, which has just increased in size to cater for even more hungry eaters! You can often see a number of suppliers bringing their local produce directly to their doors. Their brunch menu features some OG favourites like the Notorious BLT and Friends with Benedicts. In a similar vein, The Yard at the Jersey Museum (which also houses our tourist information centre) serves an excellent brunch selection and the most indulgent banana bread on the island. If you’re keen for a wander and fancy grabbing and going, Dandy is a favourite with a counter heaving full of daily baked artisan goods. Their fantastic Allpress coffee is an island favourite. On the other side of town is Four, a scratch bakery with an excellent team that produces phenomenal sourdough viennoiserie and other baked goods.
LUNCH
Jersey’s Central Market is a must-visit during your stay. They’re now offering some nighttime dining options on Friday and Saturdays, however you can rely on excellent lunch options every day from One of several bakeries or the great Casa Paco - whether that be delicious tapas or authentic Spanish fare.
If you’re looking for flame-grilled options, including some of the best smash burgers and fried chicken, head to Phire - the little sister to the excellent Samphire. A few streets away, Awabi are crushing it with all things Asian. CafeJAC is perfect for those searching for somewhere casual, that serves good quality, unfussy, family-friendly classics.

If you’re heading out East then you’ve got a plethora of options in Gorey. Enjoy a leisurely lunch sipping wine and eating seafood at Sumas, with a great view of the Castle, or alternatively soak in the hospitality at The Moorings, sitting on a picturesque harbour. Pop a little further round the coast to Archirondel and you’ll find the Driftwood Cafe, serving a seafood-inspired menu featuring the catch of its fishermen owners.
Lunch out West could see you heading back to St Ouen, to sample more delicious items from the varied menus of El Tico, Sands or Le Braye. If you fancy a change of scenery, St Brelade’s Bay is home to the world’s best Pizza Express, whilst the characterful village of St Aubin is filled with great venues - The Loft, The Boat House and The Old Courthouse to name a few. New to the area is The Salty Dog, a long-standing favourite that moved to a new building near the bus stop last year. It is a great lunch into dinner option.
DINNER IN ST HELIER
We’ve had a strong proliferation of dinner venues over the last few years. The Weighbridge and Liberty Wharf have seen restaurateurs investing in our international options, with Mexican, Asian, Italian and Spanish cuisines brought to the table. Such a variety of venues offers the choice to pursue international tastes which retain a local focus. Try Botana, a little slice of San Sebastian, for their amazing Paella or Pêtchi, favoured by foodie voyeurs for their open kitchen. Izakaya seem to have hit that sweet spot for Pan-Asian, with strong hot dishes and quality sushi.
Samphire is a beautiful central venue, offering a relaxed yet premium dinner setting bolstered by a robust, quality menu. Bohemia is our only restaurant with a Michelin star, recently ranked within the Top 50 restaurants in the UK - it is well worth a visit for lunch or dinner. We’re big fans of their Chef’s Table tasting menu, offering you the chance to truly immerse yourself in the dining experience. Bohemia has held its star for almost 20 years now, and is presently under the capable reign of Chef Callum Graham.

The Porter’s Store
If you fancy your nightlife a little more intimate. Tucked away behind Chambers is The Blind Pig, hidden down a back alley just around the corner (you can also get there through a little hidden door at the back of Chambers itself). One of our original speak-easy bars, it specialises in cocktails in a small but beautifully appointed room. Just a few turns away on Wharf Street, this year sees the addition of The Porter’s Store, which channels a 70s Americana vibe into its cocktail den.
Just one more right turn, on Broad Street, you’ll find Vinifera, worth investigating for an early evening glass of wine from one of the island’s most experienced owner-sommeliers. They also offer a private table in the basement, bookable for groups to take wine with delicious food.
If it’s wine time, you should carry on across town where you’ll find the newly opened The Watchmaker, a chic ‘wine, Champagne and charcutie’ bar. If you’re looking for some predinner drinks, the bar at Samphire and their upstairs terrace (open weather-permitting). The location provides the perfect oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the high street.
If you like the vibe of a premium hotel bar then don’t miss the cool calm of the Bohemia Bar and Restaurant on Green Street. The timeless elegance of the bar is matched by a cool calm, great drinks and the chance to be right there and ready for dinner at the fabulous Michelin-starred Bohemia restaurant.

A little more local knowledge...
History
The earliest evidence of human activity in Jersey dates to about 250,000 years ago and it was only 6,000 years ago that Jersey was part of mainland Europe before rising tides cut us off and made us an island.
During the American Wars of Independence, two attempted invasions of the island were made. In 1779, the Prince of Orange William V was prevented from landing at St. Ouen’s Bay and on 06 January 1781 a force led by Baron de Rullecourt captured St. Helier in a daring dawn raid, but was defeated by a British
army led by Major Francis Peirson in the Battle of Jersey. Jersey was the fourth-largest ship building area in the 19th-century British Isles, building over 900 vessels around the island.
Jersey was occupied by Nazi German troops between 1940 and 1945, with the Channel Islands being the only British soil occupied during World War II. This period of occupation saw about 8,000 islanders evacuated, 1,200 islanders deported to camps in Germany, and over 300 islanders sentenced to the prisons and concentration camps of mainland Europe. Many islanders remained and
the island was liberated by British troops on 09 May 1945, now celebrated as a public holiday locally.
People
Mostly a mix of Norman French and British settlers, Jersey’s community has also been enriched by the influences of the number of Europeans who also call Jersey their home. If you hear anybody referring to a Crapaud (French for toad) or a Jersey Bean they’ll be talking about one of the natives.
Language
The native language, which you’ll see displayed in a few locations around the island such as the airport and harbour is called Jèrriais but you’ll probably not hear it spoken unless you find yourself in the deepest, darkest of rural parishes such as St. Ouen, where 8% of parishioners speak it according to the results of a 2012 survey. English is the most widely spoken language.
Jersey and its neighbours Jersey has an interesting relationship with both the UK and Europe in that it’s a Crown Dependency, meaning that despite having our own independent government, locals answer to the King and the British military support our interests should the need arise. Despite being part of the British Isles, Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom. We’re also not part of the European Union but are a member of the EEC. Confused? You’ll fit right in!
Honorary Police
In addition to the States of Jersey Police force, who serve islandwide, each of Jersey’s twelve parishes has its own police service that only have jurisdiction within the boundaries of their own
If you hear anybody referring to a Crapaud (French for toad) or a Jersey Bean they’ll be talking about one of the natives.
parish, also known as the Honorary Police, who are headquartered at each of the parish halls.
Economy
The local economy thrives from a combination of offshore finance, tourism, digital and agriculture. Bathe at our beaches, enjoy our local attractions, dine on our fresh produce including world famous potatoes and dairy products from the herds of local Jersey cows.
Tides
Jersey’s tidal range is one of the largest in the world with a range of around 12 metres. We’ve also got some of the cleanest water in the British Isles, which is a winning combination when it comes to keeping our beaches great. It’s worth noting that because of the huge tidal range that the sea level does rise quickly and it’s easy to get caught out. Be mindful that if you stray too far from the shore there could be a risk of tides cutting you off and leaving you stranded. Pay close attention to the signs and know the dangers.
Safe Swimming
The RNLI have lifeguards stationed at popular bays who provide cover between the red and yelow flags.

Decoding the dialect
A local advises...
Whilst English is the most widely spoken language here in Jersey, if you find yourself interacting with some of the purest of locals you might notice a distinctive intonation that’s likely a remnant of our Norman roots despite sounding closer to a South African twang.
They’re hard to find these days but they’re definitely out there, mostly hidden away in the rural parishes. I should know, I’m descended from them and occasionally find myself pronouncing an ‘arn’ sound as ‘on’ in a way that’d likely disgust the King. The example sentence above sums this up
relatively succinctly. If you find yourself talking to somebody who pronounces words like this there’s a good chance they’ll be able to give you reliable directions. Just make sure you’re pronouncing the place names properly. To give you a head start we’ve listed a few on the page to the right.
Where are you heading?
Here are a few commonly mispronounced place names and how to say them so that nobody stares at you in complete and utter bewilderment. Good luck!
