ALAN MCCAFFREY HAPPY HENS

Alan has been the owner of Happy Hens since 2013. He is passionate about the local poultry egg market and is dedicated to continually improving it for Islanders and ensuring the wellbeing of his hens.

Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products

Happy Hens is the oldest family-owned free-range egg farm on the island, producing up to 8,000 eggs daily. Supplying supermarkets, restaurants, and wholesalers, the farm prioritises freshness, with eggs typically sold within 24 hours of laying, ensuring high-quality produce for consumers across the island.

What’s new/what’s coming up?

In the world of hens and eggs it’s hard to reinvent the wheel. Most recently, due to avian influenza outbreaks across the UK and Europe, we’ve faced a number of challenges at Happy Hens, despite no reported cases on the island. Transport restrictions have prevented the arrival of new birds, impacting supply. Now that restrictions have been lifted, our stock levels are expected to recover and shelves should soon be fully stocked again. We thank you for your patience and your support.

AIDA DE LA HERRAN

Aida is a jewellery designer and maker who handcrafts pieces using sterling silver, Argentium, or gold, with or without gemstones. She also incorporates local beach pottery shards and sea glass collected from Jersey beaches, transforming them into wearable art. She works from her studio in St Saviour.

Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products

My products are handmade using traditional silversmithing techniques, with attention to detail and quality. I started making beach pottery shards around 2014, then added sea glass and gemstones to my collections. I think they are so beautiful that I feel they deserve a proper setting. The pottery shards we find on Jersey beaches originate from the English-Chinese tea trade. Ships were loaded with tea crates in China and plates were used as ballast. On their return to the UK, ships would take shelter from bad weather around the Channel Islands with unfortunate consequences due to the rocky seashores. Those shards show up after high tide or stormy weather and it is a family tradition to collect them with our children or on our beach walks.

What’s new/what’s coming up?

Thanks to the pieces that I find it feels like every piece I make is something new and different but my newest project is a wedding collection I’m working on. I’m focusing on jewellery, accessories and gifts for all involved in the wedding: bride and groom, their parents, maid of honour and best man, bridesmaids, groom’s men, ushers, etc. I’m creating pieces for everyone and I’m really excited to share it soon.

In each edition we feature some of Jersey’s creators and let them share their creative visions and handmade goods with you lot, our island consumers. If you like what you see, check out genuinejersey.com and hunt them down to support our local industries!

WILL HOLLAND

Will is Executive Chef at The Atlantic Hotel and Ocean Restaurant. He is primarily based in the kitchen, overseeing all aspects of the culinary offering. From beautifully cooked breakfasts to refined à la carte dining, his role spans everything from relaxed terrace barbecues to bespoke menus designed for truly memorable celebrations..

Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products

While we make sure to use as much seasonal local produce on our menus we are Members for our sourdough which is served to all of our guests to start their meal. We use spelt soaked in Liberation Brewery IPA and serve it with handmade butter, which we made using Jersey cream, Jersey sea salt and seaweed foraged from St Ouen’s Bay, just minutes from our kitchen. It is a true labour of love, baked daily regardless of the weather. Perfecting the recipe took several years, and it remains one of my proudest creations. The depth of flavour comes from patience, precision and a strong connection to the island’s produce. Guests love it too, with many requesting it toasted for breakfast and others asking to take loaves home to enjoy later. It has become a signature element of the dining experience at the hotel, celebrating Jersey’s land, sea and craft producers in every bite.

What’s new/what’s coming up?

It’s safe to say that our team at The Atlantic never stands still, and this year is no exception. We’ve got a fantastic calendar of gastronomic events planned for this year, from collaborations with some of Jersey’s favourite producers to live cookery demonstrations, intimate one-to-one masterclasses and group workshops. Our much-loved Bank Holiday barbecues also return with an added twist, featuring a DJ and live saxophonist. We work hard to provide all of our guests with a shared experience with exceptional food, great produce and a relaxed yet refined sense of occasion.

LA ROBELINE

Richard and Sarah Matlock are The Cider Maker team, producing cider, distilling apple spirits, and cooking over a wood fire. Using only local apples, they create their Cidre de Jerri and apple spirits, alongside showcasing genuine Jersey produce in their outside catering and at La Cidrerie Barn Restaurant..

Tell us about your Genuine Jersey Products

We take local apples, press them on a 120+ year old Normandy press and mature the juice for up to eight months to produce our Cidre de Jerri, some of which we distill on our mobile Parisienne column Still, built in 1950. The resultant clear liquid is syphoned into oak barrels and left to mature into an amber spirit encompassing the essence of autumn. Our oldest calva has been in barrels for 18 years and is smooth, rich and dark making it the perfect digestif. We serve our Cidre de Jerri at public and private events across the Island and in our seasonal barn restaurant. Because it is made from the juice of local apples and nothing else, it has a very apple-y, clean flavour and in the bottle, a slight effervescence as we allow it to complete a secondary fermentation. An excellent accompaniment to many dishes or enjoy as an aperitif.

What’s new/what’s coming up?

We continue to make our cider and spirits in St Ouen but are constantly evolving our menus for both our outside catering operations and our restaurant, incorporating our own cider, spirits and cider vinegar into our cookery. However, some things never change such as the recipe for our own homemade pure pork saucisses! As ever we will be attending various public events over the course of this year - keep in touch through our social media pages and our newsletter (subscribe through the website). La Cidrerie Barn Restaurant will be opening on 3rd April, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Details on our website or why not sign up to our newsletter!

Experience Meets the Future: Inside Appleby’s Property Team

Spend a few minutes talking to Appleby Partner John Bisson and you quickly get a sense of just how much Jersey’s property market has changed over the past half century. Having spent more than 50 years at Appleby, he’s seen it all - market booms and slowdowns, changing regulations and a steady shift in what clients expect from their lawyers.

But this isn’t just a story about experience. It’s about what happens when that experience is shared, built on, and carried forward.

Teamwork matters

Appleby’s property team has grown into one of the island’s most well-regarded practices, handling everything from high-end residential transactions to complex commercial deals. What really sets it apart, however, is how the team works together. There’s a strong sense that no one operates in a silo - clients benefit from a group of lawyers who regularly share knowledge, compare notes and bring different perspectives to the table.

That team dynamic is a big part of why clients keep coming back. They’re not just getting legal advice; they’re getting the combined insight of people who understand the local market inside out and know how to navigate it smoothly.

A key part of that strength is the wider team around the partners. Kate Westwater, as Counsel, plays a central role, bringing deep experience, sound judgement, and real consistency across matters. Kate is a trusted support not just for clients but within the team itself. Alongside her, the contribution of Conveyancing Managers Michel Bougeard and David Le Brocq adds another practical layer of expertise, helping to keep transactions moving efficiently and ensuring that the detail is always covered. Then, of course, there is incredible support from Legal Executive Allison Kidson and Secretary Tracey Le Falher.

Strengthening an established practice

Against that backdrop, Jeff O’Boyle’s arrival as a partner feels like a natural next step. Rather than changing direction, it’s about adding to what’s already there. He brings his own experience and specialisms, along with a fresh perspective that complements the existing team.

Importantly, Jeff isn’t stepping into something new - he’s joining something established and helping to strengthen it further. His presence adds depth and ensures the team is well placed to meet the demands of an increasingly busy and sophisticated property market. He will drive the use of technology as an addition to existing ways of dealing.

One of the most interesting aspects of this next chapter is the opportunity to work closely with John. It’s not often you get to learn alongside someone with that level of experience. The value goes beyond technical knowledgeit’s about judgement, relationships and an instinct for how to handle complex situations.

At the same time, it’s a two-way exchange. Combining John’s decades of insight with Jeff’s more recent market experience creates a balance that works in everyone’s favour, particularly clients. It means advice is grounded, but never stuck in the past.

Legacy and future

That’s especially important in today’s market. Jersey’s property landscape has become more complex over time, with tighter timelines, more informed clients and increasing expectations around speed and clarity. Whether it’s residential or commercial work, there’s a growing need for lawyers who can think ahead, spot potential issues early and keep things moving.

Appleby’s team is well equipped for that. The mix of long-standing experience, strong internal support and new energy means clients get a service that is both steady and responsive.

Looking ahead, that balance will only become more important. The strength of the team lies in its peoplethose who have shaped it over decades, and those who are helping to take it forward.

It’s a combination that gives clients real confidence. And in property, that still counts for everything.

cottagecore.

Tucked away in the heart of St Ouen, La Ronce is a beautifully restored 17th-century cottage that effortlessly blends historic charm with modern comfort, offering an inviting slice of countryside living that feels both timeless and quietly luxurious.

Maybe it’s It’s really not hard to get me on board with a house in St Ouen (I’d live in the L’Aneez surf shack if I could), so when we received La Ronce as a featured property for this issue of Islander, it was an easy win. Apparently, in the eyes of the general Jersey public, it’s an easy sell too. According to the property description, the estate agents have “lost count” over the years of how many times they’ve been asked to find a “picturesque cottage in walk-in condition, surrounded by a sunny garden and in a rural location.” La Ronce, in their words, is the “perfect example.”

The house itself dates back to the seventeenth century and carries a real sense of history. Previously renovated by the National Trust for Jersey and further improved by its current owners, it has been carefully refined without losing the character that defines its structure. Exposed granite walls, low beamed ceilings and wood panelling run throughout, giving the house a sense of solidity and warmth that feels entirely in keeping with its setting.

The kitchen continues to strike the balance between countryside quaintness and practicality. Designed as an eat-in space, it feels like the natural hub of the house, somewhere that accommodates everything from early morning coffee to long, informal dinners.

Inside, the living spaces feel grounded and comfortable. The main reception room, stretching to 28 feet, centres around a granite fireplace with a wood burner, a cosy feature that naturally draws people in during colder months. With light coming through from both sides of the house, it avoids the heaviness that older cottages can sometimes fall into and instead feels balanced and easy to live in.

The kitchen continues to strike the balance between countryside quaintness and practicality. Designed as an eatin space, it feels like the natural hub of the house, somewhere that accommodates everything from early morning coffee to long, informal dinners. The presence of an Aga reinforces that slower, more habitual way of living, where the kitchen is in constant use.

Upstairs, three bedrooms sit beneath the same exposed beams and soft light. They are comfortably proportioned, with views out onto the surrounding greenery that keep the house connected to its setting.

Upstairs, three bedrooms sit beneath the same exposed beams and soft light. They are comfortably proportioned, with views out onto the surrounding greenery that keep the house connected to its setting. The main bedroom, in particular, feels settled and calm, while the additional rooms offer flexibility depending on how the space is needed. A large attic provides scope for future conversion, subject to permissions, but worst comes to worst it offers ample space to store all the memorabilia that feels slightly too special to dump in La Collette.

The garden is established and mostly laid to lawn, offering a sense of openness while still providing privacy through mature planting, with room to make memories and plant a few spruces of your own. It is easy to imagine it shifting with the seasons, from long summer evenings spent outside to quieter winter mornings looking out across it through the stable doors.

A separate double garage and parking for four further cars give ample space for a family, or a singular car aficionado. If it feels like the kind of setting that might draw you out west, make sure to WhatsApp Don before someone else gets there first.

PREPARING YOUR PROPERTY FOR SALE

What every homeowner should consider before bringing a property to market.

Selling a property in Jersey is often an exciting step, but it can also feel daunting, particularly if your home hasn’t changed hands in many years.

From an estate agent’s perspective, the most successful sales are those where the seller has taken time to prepare thoroughly before going to market. This not only helps avoid delays, but can also protect your final sale price and build confidence with prospective buyers.

One of the most important areas to address early is your legal documentation. Jersey’s conveyancing process is detailed, and buyers’ lawyers will examine title deeds, plans and historic contracts closely. If your property has been in the family for decades, ensuring everything is complete and accurate is essential. Any uncertainty around ownership, boundaries or rights of way can slow down, or even jeopardise a sale. Engaging a property lawyer early can help resolve issues before a buyer is involved.

Boundaries are another consideration, particularly with older homes. Long-standing walls, hedges or informal divisions do not always align perfectly with legal title. Taking the time to clarify what is being sold can prevent unnecessary complications later.

Condition also plays a key role. Buyers today are well-informed and cautious, and issues such as drainage compliance or the presence of asbestos may arise. While reports are not always required, addressing potential concerns in advance can provide reassurance and reduce the likelihood of renegotiation. More generally, small defects, such as leaks, cracks or signs of damp, can have a disproportionate impact on how a property is perceived, so resolving these early is often worthwhile.

Finally, presentation should not be overlooked. A clean, well-maintained and uncluttered home allows buyers to focus on the space itself, while tidy outdoor areas help create a strong first impression.

In essence, anticipating the questions a buyer is likely to ask, and preparing accordingly, places you in a far stronger position, helping to ensure a smoother and more successful sale.
