What inspired you to move into Finance?
Drawn by the appeal of a five-day workweek and the chance to boost my earnings, I applied for a role at a trust company, organising archive boxes and establishing a filing system. I then progressed through training as an Assistant Trust Officer, learning double-entry bookkeeping and how to prepare annual accounts. After gaining several years of experience, I began studying for my professional qualifications and steadily advanced through the ranks—eventually being appointed director. And that brings us to today.

How did you decide it was the right time for a career switch?
When I moved back to Jersey from Australia, I had been thinking about a career change, and knew it was the right time to step out of my comfort zone. I thought finance was a great option as I wanted to try something completely different. I did a lot of research, and I am lucky to have friends who work in the trust industry who gave me a good understanding of what to expect, which helped me take the leap!
Alex Picot Trust is an independent Jersey based trust and company service provider managing structures and advising both local and international individuals and their families, with a personal service delivered by our familiar and friendly team.

What advice would you say to someone thinking about switching into finance?
From my experience, switching into finance was both challenging and rewarding and gave me a sense of purpose. Unlike jobs where you might feel like a cog in the machine, finance allows you to see the impact of your work and apply your skills meaningfully. Skills gained in previous roles will be invaluable! Each day brings opportunities to learn and grow, showing we all have the potential to go beyond routine tasks and truly shine.
