Fifty shades of feathers.

Ithink it started with a pun. It wasn’t even original, postmodern at best. The application of an old riddle about newspapers‘what’s black and white and red all over’ - to our magazine. A paper obviously looks monotone and leeches red ink, but the play on words implies it’s also widely appreciated and consumed. Great for Gallery, right? One of the alternative joke answers is, however, ‘a sunburnt penguin’. And that’s where the problem started.

In a pretty simple extension of that punchline, we added ‘Investors in Penguins’ to our footer as we didn’t qualify for the ‘Investors in People’ workplace accreditation. We actually sponsored a penguin, he was called ‘Majesty’, may his flippers rest in peace. I also decided to deviate from the Gallery’s standard fashion ads with some more comedic Gallery brand work. One included a range of penguins I designed to complement one a friend had drawn for us. The Clockwork Orange penguin still sits proudly as my LinkedIn profile image.

I’m totally comfortable with how that looks on that particular platform, but everyone began to assume I had a real thing about penguins. People started buying me things with penguins on them. Pins, books, socks... I even got given some paintings of penguins with little babies when we had our daughter. People send me penguin images. They send me news stories. I’m yet to receive an actual penguin. Don’t get me wrong, March of the Penguins got to me a little. I loved Happy Feet, I’ve read The Penguin Lessons. I like penguins... but I don’t anticipate putting a Juan Salador* in my bath any time soon.

Despite my attempts to temper the penguin onslaught, when I saw Matt Sharp’s photos from his trip to the Antarctic, there’s no way that the penguin shot wasn’t going on the cover. This edition is seasonally-focused with a great gift guide and loads of wonderful islanders smashing it in the arts, their careers and their creative endeavours but the metaphor of penguins thriving on shifting ice as a testament to adaptation and resilience is one that resonated with the moment of reflection we get as we approach a year-end. And I mean, flick back and appreciate how cool is would be to zoom through the water like those beasts! Maybe I like them more than I’m willing to admit.

‘TRAVELLERS’ PRIVATE VIEW

Jason Butler’s Studio

Tuesday 30th September

When the invite to the ‘Travellers’ Private view arrived at the Gallery office, its oversize physical appearance and eerie-looking image of a female cosmonaut certainly piqued our interest. We sent Glen Perotte to shoot Jason for a feature ahead of the show for our last edition, so had a peek and an idea of what to expect. The strong

attendance, positive comments and subsequent red dots for Travellers are a testamant to the time and effort Jason pours into his work. The return to figurative work evolves Jason’s ‘Seekers’ from almost a decade ago, combined with the influence of collage and a unique depth of feeling he adds with every brushstroke.

BOLLYWOOD BANQUET NIGHT

The Pomme d’Or Friday 14th November

Lloyds International and Appleby hosted a unique fundraising evening in support of Lily McGarry, the courageous 23-year-old medical student from Jersey, who became a quadruple amputee after a sudden and severe infection. The evening was an immersive experience with Bollywood music, elegant decor, and a

celebration of community spirit. The event featured a Bollywood-themed tasting menu. The funds raised from the event will go directly towards advanced prosthetics, home adaptations, and rehabilitation to help Lilly regain her independence and reconnect with the activities she loves.

The event launched on Thursday evening with a packed opening party, where guests enjoyed first access to Carousel’s Christmas collection and complimentary styling. The buzz continued all weekend, from Friday to Sunday, as visitors tried on pieces, booked their festive rentals, and This event brought supporters together for an unforgettable night of music and community spirit. Local professionals took to the decks after weeks of training, showcasing their newly honed DJ skills in front of a packed crowd. The atmosphere was electric as guests enjoyed highenergy sets, friendly competition and plenty of dancing, all in support of a vital local cause.

The event not only celebrated the courage and creativity of the participants but also helped raise important funds to support people in Jersey affected by cancer. RAFA JERSEY BRANCH CENTENARY BALL

Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel

Saturday 25th October

In one of those uniquely Jersey stories, we have the honour of being the oldest RAFA branch, and in fact we predate the formation of RAFA nationally. RAFA themselves are mere babies having been formed in 1943, making them only 82 years old! 130 members and guests celebrated

the anniversary and were joined by the Islands’ newly sworn in Bailiff Robert Macrae, on his first actual full day as Bailiff, and by the President of RAFA nationally, Air Marshal Sir Baz and Lady North.

The evening was outstanding success, and a fitting tribute to the original members that founded the Branch, the determination and hard work of all the members since then, and the generosity the public of Jersey has shown to RAFA, enabling us and our

National Headquarters to reach out to the RAF community offering friendship, camaraderie and support when it is needed.

WILL LAKEMAN’S ‘LABYRINTH’ PRIVATE VIEW

CCA Galleries International

Thursday 23rd October

Labyrinth was Will’s first solo show at CCA, the culmination of four years of creative visions since he won the Summer Prize at the Jersey Summer Exhibition. This impressive body of work, captured on camera and then enhanced with Will’s imagination, has created a unique world ‘inspired by cult movies, impossible

architecture and night-time wanderings’. The places are familiar, but other-worldy. Supplementary written work offering more of an insight into Will’s mind, further embellished the photographic prints and lightboxes of the exhibition on what was a great opening night.

2025 Jersey News Headlines

2025 packed some big headlines. OpenAI became the world’s most valuable private company, Oasis reunited, and Donald Trump was inaugurated for a second term. Somewhere between the Pope dying and Taylor Swift igniting internet panic over ‘The Life of a Showgirl,’ Anna Wintour left Vogue, Charlie Kirk got shot, and Chris Brown was arrested (again).

Warning to Fill Holes Dug in Sand at Beaches

24th July 2025

These are the kind of headlines that make local journalists question their life choices. A friend once told me that if he had to write one more article about the ferry fiasco, he’d have to commit a series of felonies just to generate something newsworthy. In the end, he moved to London instead, largely reporting on topics of the same magnitude, just with more Pret A Mangers and a longer commute. But what did he leave behind? I combed through this year’s local headlines, to find the masterpieces of micro-drama that he forsook.

Red Stripe on Rural Lane

Sparks Social Media Storm

3rd June, 2025

Facebook mums mobilised en masse after a red stripe appeared on a road in Grouville. The “eyesore” of a safety initiative was condemned as “a monstrosity” for its “harsh, urban-looking” vibe. Constable Mark Labey stood firm, insisting that the glaring crimson line, practically visible from space, was exactly what the lane needed. To some, it’s an atrocity. To others, it’s avant-garde infrastructure.

Buoy Recovered After Drifting Away from France

25th September 2025

Authorities issued a stern reminder that unfilled sand holes pose a perilous danger, and can even lead to “serious injury or death.” Avid diggers were warned to, under no circumstances, leave their holes unattended - lest the four horsemen be released upon us all.

Pavements to Lose Red Colour

When Resurfaced

20th August 2025

Contrary to the sentiments of Facebook mums in Grouville, downtown there was heartbreak over replacing the ring road’s beloved red pavements with ordinary black asphalt. Parish officials mourned the aesthetic downgrade but cited “cost, durability, and availability.” It appears there is no room in the budget for beauty, moving forwards.

After days missing in action, a French navigation buoy named La Jument des Héaux washed up near Portelet Common. Coastguards reunited the lost soldier with French maritime colleagues, to arrange for the buoy’s “safe return home.”

11-Year-Old Girl Has Bike Stolen

7th September 2025

An 11-year-old suffered a “slight injury to her finger” after two masked teens pushed her off her bike. The suspects escaped on an electric scooter (modern banditry at its finest) but ditched their plunder nearby. Police stated that “suspects remain outstanding,” which sounds much better than “we have no leads.”

A Rocky Horror Fan Has Seen Live Show 45 Times

26th September 2025

Local legend Glyn Reynolds has attended The Rocky Horror Show 45 times, describing it as “pure escapism.” To mark the film’s 50th anniversary, he showcased his memorabilia and confessed it still brings him to tears. Perhaps repetition done right can feel like liberation after all.

ME AND MY PET

FURRY TAIL WINNERS

Bindi,

Carlie and Jason

Carlie and Jason both grew up surrounded by border collies and collie crosses, so it felt only natural that one day would bring one into their own family. They’ve always loved the breed’s intelligence, charisma, and boundless energy, and they knew they wanted a furry companion who could share life’s adventures right alongside them.

“When they first met Bindi, it truly was love at first sight. Even as a puppy, he was confident, intuitive, and driven; qualities that immediately told them he was the perfect match. As he’s grown, he’s become everything they hoped for and far more than they ever expected.

Bindi has an incredible ability to read people. He always seems to know what someone needs and will often step forward as a self-appointed therapy dog

whenever he senses anxiety or sadness. When he’s happy, he makes sure the world knows it; snuggling in for kisses, offering cuddles, and using his paw to gently pull you closer”.

He has been by Carlie and James’ sides through all their biggest adventures, including serving as the ring bearer at their wedding. He joins them at work, in meetings, on shopping trips, during café stops, and even on boat rides and paddle-boarding outings. One unforgettable memory is their road trip across the UK, where Bindi visited a wildlife park and a seal sanctuary; he was completely fascinated by all the new animals he discovered.

Every day, Bindi reminds Carlie and James to savour the simple moments and embrace the present. From early-morning cuddles to sunset walks, he fills their lives with joy, laughter, and a sense of wonder. With Bindi, every day truly becomes an adventure.

Success via sea.

They say everyone has a book in them, but most people’s lives never give them the space to sit down and write it. Even if you could find the time, you’d still need the kernel of an idea, the tools of language and storytelling, and the motivation to get your fingers to the keyboard.

Beyond that, there are those who manage to get started and smash out a few chapters, only to fail to finish, and those whose self-published masterpiece barely registers on Wattpad. Every potential author dreams of Rowling-esque success, but actually being able to write something people want to read is no mean feat. Contrary to what Grammarly or those pyramid-selling course reels tell you, the world of AI slop is also making it harder—not easier—to stand out. Originality is still as valuable a commodity as ever, but getting an original idea to land takes something special.

The same sort of challenge faces anyone dreaming of building a fashion brand in a world dominated by Shein and a saturated landscape of dropshipped, screen-printed T-shirt designs. Authenticity is becoming more central than ever to the success of a concept. I thought about it once myself, having failed to find the perfect hoodie. I ended up deep in conversation in the middle of the night with someone on Alibaba who didn’t speak much English, but called themselves John. We exchanging emails about the materials used for lining and the nuances of YKK zips, but it all seemed like a little too much to take on. Five sizes, five colours.. that’s 25 of anything as soon as you say ‘Dàdǎn shì shì ba!*

Writing is hard, fashion is hard. So it’s hats off to Jake Powell and Jack Seymour, who are about to embark on a journey that infuses the two with the launch of VIACY, a homegrown fashion and media brand rooted in surf culture and, contrastingly, MMA. Their brand statement is: “Born from the good trouble of dusty surf car parks circa late ’90s, the brand’s origin sits within an era of transition — just before the analogue world flickered out beneath the hyper-glow of the digital age.”

It’s a smart play, allowing the pair to draw on generations of content to build a narrative. Jake’s experience with The Mango Tree was a first foray into this world, gaining a strong following from local groms and their parents alike. He tells us that the brand became problematic because, well, there are a lot of mango trees out there, and carving a niche proved challenging.

With VIACY, there are no comparisons to other namesakes: it’s a smart, unique, new brand identity with real potential for growth. We’ve seen plenty of start-up fashion brands in these pages over the years, but these guys have the motivation to see this one through. Their pre-launch party last summer united St Ouen’s surf royalty behind them, and they’re set to repeat the party in 2026. Ahead of that, the guys will hopefully see their torch icon spread far and wide. Shunning modern marketing, the brand wants to sidestep influencer culture altogether. They’re charging their own ‘Torchbearers’ with the task of travelling their own course and taking the brand with them via the sea. We wish them all the best. VIACY is one to watch (and wear) this year. viacy.co

What’s new/what’s coming up?

We have lots of new and exciting things planned for the future, lots of seafood delights to come! We were delighted to be awarded The Great Taste Award earlier this year. The logo acts like a seal of quality and trust, and we’re hopeful it’ll help us reach more people who care about great seafood, great service and great stories, which will help to shape our future. SAILING TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD

There are few places left on Earth that truly defy comprehension. Antarctica is one of them. Photographer Matt Sharp recently returned from sailing south of Cape Horn to the icy wilderness at the bottom of the world, a journey that left him both humbled and inspired. >>

“Antarctica is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth,” he says. “It is a place of staggering scale and contrast, both brutal and beautiful, harsh yet full of life. It reminds you how small we are, and how deeply we have drifted from the rhythms of the natural world. Yet the lasting impression is one of hope, hope for what can still be.”

For Matt, the voyage south was a longheld dream. “I have always wanted to sail south of the Horn,” he says. “It feels like a rite of passage, earning the right to be there.” His route took him across the notorious Drake Passage, the restless stretch of sea that separates South America from the Antarctic Peninsula, a crossing as legendary as it is unpredictable.

“The Drake has moods,” he explains. “Grey, green, steel blue, sometimes fire. The winds build and drop as if the

sea cannot decide what it wants to be. Wandering albatrosses follow above, hourglass dolphins below. Days pass without edges, just the rhythm of the waves and the sound of the hull.”

After several days, the first iceberg appeared on the horizon. “Nothing prepares you for the scale of the place,” he says. “That first glimpse feels like arriving on another planet.”

Landing at Mikkelsen Harbour on Trinity Island, Matt found himself surrounded by life amid the frozen silence. “Passing snow flurries gave only glimpses of the mountains and glaciers, but the hostility of the place is palpable, raw and immense. The rookery in the bay offered our first meeting with gentoo penguins, unfazed by the storm, going about their lives as though we were not there at all.”

After several days, the first iceberg appeared on the horizon. “Nothing prepares you for the scale of the place...”

It is the kind of scene that shifts your perspective entirely, a reminder that life endures even in the harshest conditions. Back on deck, condensation clouded lenses, batteries froze, and the constant battle against cold became part of the rhythm. “The environment forces patience,” he says. “You slow down to its pace.”

Among the expedition’s quieter discoveries were the weathered huts that still dot the coastline. “I did not expect to develop such a fondness for the Antarctic huts,” he admits. “They stand there, these faded shapes against the white, paint peeling, windows clouded. There is something timeless about them, almost cinematic. They are the human story written into a landscape that does not need one.”

For Matt, Antarctica will never be just another destination. “It changes how you see everything else,” he says. “It is like outer space, mythic, humbling and alive. You come away with this awareness that fragility and endurance can exist together.”

Wild Hope, his accompanying stills exhibition that he presented at The Jersey Arts Centre builds on that reflection, celebrating the resilience of the natural world and reminding us that when the wild is given space, it can find its way back. The exhibition is on until the 6th December, so if you’ve grabbed this edition as soon as it’s out, head down to see it!

Lessons in LEADERSHIP

When you meet Henry Marshall, Head Master of St Michael’s Preparatory School, it’s immediately clear why pupils and parents alike speak so highly of him. Down-to-earth, thoughtful, and energetic, he leads with a blend of warmth and purpose that perfectly reflects the school’s ethos. Since joining St Michael’s two years ago, Henry has embraced island life with enthusiasm, from early morning runs with his spaniel Otto to championing the values of curiosity, community, and character that define the school. With a background that spans two decades in education and a career shaped by mentors, sport, and a deep respect for childhood itself, his approach is simple yet powerful: every decision begins with one question, what is best for the children?

Henry shares a glimpse behind the headmaster’s desk, from favourite books and memorable advice to why he believes success starts with happiness.

After a demanding school day, what’s your go-to way to unwind?

I’m not someone who enjoys being stuck behind a desk for too long, any opportunity to get out of the office and around the school is always very welcome. I love being outdoors and make the most of any chance for fresh air and exercise. Walking and running with our spaniel, Otto, are particular favourites of mine.

If we peeked at your bookshelf or opened your playlist, what might surprise us?

I’m not sure there are many surprises, but on my bookshelves you’ll find everything from James Herriot, Bill Bryson, Tim Marshall and Ben Macintyre to a selection of sporting biographies. As for my playlist, that’s an

easy one, it’s mostly James Blunt and the Stereophonics on repeat!

As a newcomer to Jersey, what are you enjoying most about island life?

Being part of a close-knit island community with such a fascinating history is something really special. The outdoor lifestyle is a huge bonus too.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, inside or outside the classroom?

Inside - “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” Outside - Years ago, I got a tip-off about a greyhound called Black Ruby. As a student, putting £50 on a dog was a big gamble - and watching the race unfold on

Ceefax made it all the more nerve-racking. Thankfully, Black Ruby came through and it turned out to be a very good day indeed!

If you weren’t a headmaster, what other career might have tempted you?

I had hoped to become a Royal Marine, but when that didn’t work out, I found my way into teaching, completing my PGCE straight after university.

Favourite meal and drink?

Tough one! First thing that comes to mind is steak and kidney pie and a pint of Guinness.

l Photography: Danny Evans

What was the first job you ever had and what did it teach you?

During the summer holidays, a group of school friends and I returned to our old school to work alongside the maintenance and grounds teams. It was great fun being trusted with all sorts of machinery, and gave me a great respect for those who keep a school running behind the scenes. The tea and lunch breaks were just as memorable, filled with stories from the men about their younger days and our first introduction to “POETS Day” at the end of the week!

What are some of your most vivid memories from your own school days?

I absolutely loved my school days, there are far too many great memories to list. I was really lucky to have a brilliant group of friends and some fantastic teachers who were genuine role models. They taught me values that have stuck with me ever since and looking back, they’re probably a big part of why I ended up in teaching.

Who was the teacher or mentor who left the greatest mark on you as a student, and why?

Three stand out, but it is a man called Keven Johnstone who undoubtedly left the greatest mark. I first came across him on the sports pitches as a young boy. He was an excellent sportsman himself but knew how to get the best of children through his coaching. Years later he became my housemaster, he took a genuine interest in all of the boys and instilled a trust and confidence in me that served me well through my school days and beyond. Sadly, he died from a brain tumour last year, the church couldn’t hold all of the former pupils who came to pay their respects - a great role model.

You began your career in the UK, what first drew you to Jersey?

I have got to know St Michael’s well over several years through the strong sporting relationship that has developed between St Michael’s and my previous school. During that time, I have always been impressed by St Michael’s, its ethos, talented pupils, and dedicated staff. So, when the position of Head was advertised, I was very quick to put my application in!! Since joining St Michael’s two years ago, every member of the school community has been incredibly welcoming, making the move for my whole family a smooth and enjoyable one.

Did you always envision yourself as a headmaster, or was there a pivotal moment when you knew it was your calling?

I have always been ambitious and once I started teaching I always felt that becoming a headmaster was something that I could one day achieve.

Having started off as geography teacher twenty years ago I have been very lucky in taking on roles and responsibilities from Head of Department, taking on numerous sporting teams, running boarding houses, taking on safeguarding roles, leading pastoral care, becoming an ISI inspector, a Deputy Head for eight years and then a Headmaster. I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside some brilliant colleagues and mentors, over the years, whose guidance and advice have been instrumental.

Your school is renowned for its excellence. What core philosophy guides your leadership and decision-making?

At the heart of my leadership is a childcentred philosophy. Every decision I make begins with one simple question: “What is best for the children?”

Schools exist first and foremost for the children in their care and I believe that if we get it right for the children, if they feel known, valued, challenged, and supported, then everything else follows naturally.

My role is to create an environment where every child can thrive: academically, socially, and emotionally. Ultimately, schools flourish when children are at the centre of every conversation and every decision.

What does true success look like for a headmaster in today’s rapidly changing world?

It is somewhat of a juggling act! Schools are busy communities and the challenge is to try and bring all parties with you on the journey. Ultimately, it has to be happy children, who have enjoyed and thrived during their time at St Michael’s and will hopefully look back fondly on their time here.

What role should schools play in shaping not only scholars, but leaders of character?

Academic success is important, but education is about far more than exam results, it’s about helping young people discover who they are, what they stand for and how they can make a positive contribution to the world around them. At St Michael’s, our values of consideration, challenge, curiosity and community lie at the heart of everything we do. They guide us in developing the whole child, nurturing not just knowledge, but also character and confidence. Our aim is that every pupil leaves St Michael’s equipped with the skills, self-belief and mindset to thrive in an ever-changing modern world.

What do you believe your school does particularly well?

Ensuring that St Michael’s is a place of happiness and smiles that focuses on developing the whole child. We are a non selective school but we regularly send children on to some of the most selective schools here in Jersey and across the UK.

That says a lot about both our teaching and our pastoral care. But beyond results, what we do best is help children discover who they are. Whether their passion is engineering, drama, art, sport, music or outdoor learning there is space here to explore it. The character of our pupils shines through: they are considerate, curious and enjoy challenge.

Academic success is important, but education is about far more than exam results, it’s about helping young people discover who they are, what they stand for and how they can make a positive contribution to the world around them.

What is a lesson you’ve learned from a student that has stayed with you?

I’m not sure I can pinpoint a single lesson, but I’ve learned never to underestimate what children are capable of.

I always find that the last few years of prep school, Years 7 & 8 are when they flourish and benefit from being at the top of a school and the kudos, experiences and responsibilities that come their way as a result.

If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self when you first became headmaster, what would it be?

Enjoy it. Schools are built on people and the daily interactions with pupils, staff and parents are what make the role so rewarding. Being a Head and working in education is a huge privilege, you get to shape lives, guide a community and hopefully make a difference.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind when your chapter as headmaster is written?

I’d like to think I’d leave the school stronger than when I found it. If pupils, years later, still look back on their time with fond memories, feeling that St Michael’s helped shape who they are, then I’d consider that a strong legacy…

Reflect and grow.

Rumour has it that the number of Monarch butterflies has risen for the first time in a long time. A small but powerful sign of hope for the world in 2025. These endangered pollinators may be recovering thanks to human awareness and efforts to create healthier environments for insects, and in turn, the rest of our ecosystem.

That might not make front page news, though… In our modern world, fear and urgency tends to dominate the media. We’ve grown accustomed to stories that pull us out of the present moment and into a state of fear or disappointment. Modern media thrives on attention, and the way algorithms work is that the stories that get the most attention get shared more, engaged with more and seen more. So, as a collective we are led to believe there’s more bad happening in the world than good. Shocking stories rise to the top. So it’s no wonder so many of us believe our world is on a steady downhill trajectory.

But when we look closer, small tokens of good news are happening all around us. Sometimes you just have to dig a little deeper to find them - by taking part in your community and hearing first-hand stories, by creating space for positive conversation at your family dinner table, or even seeking them out in quiet corners of the internet.

Things happen. Good and bad. When we pause and reflect, we can notice that positive change is constantly growing too. In nature, within our island community, and in the wider world.

I’m not one to completely ignore negative changes happening in the world - there’s certainly a time and a place for allowing your anger to fuel positive change. Even so, it’s important to remember you control the scales. You can balance your awareness of global issues with optimism.

We live in an age of constant exposure - modern day media may feel like an endless stream of disasters, coming with feelings of helplessness that may sometimes feel overwhelming. While awareness is vital, it is worth remembering it isn’t natural for humans to absorb every painful story in the world in real time. We can stay informed while protecting our peace, by curating what we consume.

Modern day technologies are developed enough to expose us to global news in an instant. They are also capable of being a tool to celebrate progress, share solutions and engage with your community. Every time you choose to search for positive news, and bring brightness into your personal relationships, you make a small step that helps to tip the balance.

Let’s remember good news still exists, and every one of us has the power to amplify it.

Nature is healing. Monarch butterflies have increased in numbers. Beavers are returning to rivers in Portugal. Urban greening projects, pollinator patches, and community allotments are springing up in so many cities. A century ago, few people spoke of protecting ecosystems. Today, we have marine reserves, national parks, and entire movements dedicated to re-wilding and protecting our planet. Conservation awareness is thriving. Renewable energy is advancing. From floating wind farms across the pond, just off the coast of France, to solar projects in small towns… humans are learning to work with nature, not against it.

Closer to home, there is plenty worth celebrating too. Not long ago at the Regen Gathering, locals came together for two days of talks, food, and live music to learn about community, connection to our land, and regenerative farming. It was a popular way of bringing people together to discuss the future of food and farming, to work together towards the best outcomes possible. With great news of a £20k ‘Food System Prize’ to be awarded to an individual or business who was seen to be leading the shift towards healthier local food systems - a huge support that will help to fuel meaningful change.

More inspiring movements locally include the launch of ‘Value Jersey’, where over 150 people gathered to support a community effort to make life, business and government more affordable and connected on the island. Groups like Safety in New Friends are creating safe spaces for people with anxiety to meet others, and singer Nicki Kennedy’s group is bringing joy and togetherness to islanders with Parkinson’s or dementia.

Moments like these remind us that community change starts small - with compassion, conversation, and courage. Whilst there is value in consciously stepping back from loud noise in the media, it is just as important to stay mindful and active on matters that mean a lot to you. Staying curious about how you can help, and being dedicated to noticing (and sharing) the good stuff, is how you can make a difference.

It’s how hope will quietly keep growing.

When we look closer, small tokens of good news are happening all around us. Sometimes you just have to dig a little deeper to find them- by taking part in your community and hearing first-hand stories.

With small class sizes and passionate, experienced teachers, every child is known, valued and supported to discover their strengths. Our rich curriculum in art, sport, languages and technology is enhanced by diverse after-school activities and individualised care.

As a warm, inclusive and non-selective community, we welcome pupils of all abilities and personalities. Our 80-acre campus, with science and engineering labs, swimming pool, playing fields, forest school, and extensive sports facilities, inspires confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Pupils leave us confident, independent and ready for their next chapter. To find out more, please contact our admissions team: admissions@stmichaels.je

“The quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent”

“No one really likes pigeons anymore”

If you were to try to put your finger on the core of Aimée Cast’s art, the resounding message is one of reinvention and transformation, turning the ordinary and overlooked into something that should be celebrated. She recently graduated from Newcastle University, and her degree show featured an entire felted installation of a living room. Using her signature colour palette of bright oranges and hot pinks, she created a sofa, TV cover, rug and decorations. Exhibited at the Baltic, the project reflected her ongoing exploration of texture, colour and storytelling through objects.

Since then, Aimee has returned to the island and lived the life of an artist, pursuing any and all creative work she can get her hands on. Her first mural, created with ArtHouse for their Art in the Arches installation down at Elizabeth Harbour, was a turning point for her. “I learned a lot from it,” she said. “Beforehand, I would have said painting is the one medium I don’t like to work with. But the process made me change my mind… I really enjoyed it, and discovered I was a lot better at it than I previously thought.”

Her whimsical style is often compared to Dr. Seuss, and is immediately recognisable. “I find a lot of kids like my work, because it’s bright and colourful,” she explained. “My main character is Cretin,” she added, laughing. “He’s a pink pigeon who has turned into my mascot.” The bird, with wonky eyes and a depleted frame, embodies the joy, humour and playfulness that permeate Aimee’s creations.

The inspiration behind Cretin mirrors that of the rest of her work: focusing on the overlooked elements of the everyday. The idea came to her while she was daydreaming in her studio space at university. “A few pigeons were flying in and out of the ledge by the window,” she remembered. “No one really likes pigeons anymore,” she added. “I feel like they’re a metaphor for everyone who feels like they don’t really fit in.”

The vision is to turn things with bad connotations into something that instead becomes part of the good.

It’s reflective of the level of inclusivity Aimee aims to bring into her work and its underlying philosophy. “He represents anyone on the outskirts really,” she explained. “He’s a mascot for me, but he’s also a mascot for belonging.” Her work aims to reclaim words like ‘cretin’ and ‘scallywag,’ historically loaded with negative connotations, and give them a new, inclusive meaning. The vision is to turn things with bad connotations into something that instead becomes part of the good.

This playful subversion extends to her reinterpretation of myths and local stories. Her mural at Elizabeth Harbour reinvents the traditionally scary legend of the black dog at Bouley Bay. In her painting, she transforms him into a “cute little black dog,” who she named Bad Bouley. These characters interact among the scene of the ruins of Grosnez Castle, encouraging viewers to see the world differently and embrace what sits outside society’s comfort zone.

Currently, Aimee is balancing her time between Jersey and London, continuing to grow her practice, collaborate with other artists, and push the boundaries of her work. Through her felted sculptures, murals and digital illustrations, her work proposes art as a place for childlike whimsy, inclusion, humour and wonder.

How Journaling Changed My Life Reflection Reams of

I kept a diary as a child. The kind that housed secret crushes under lock and key. Into the depths of teenagehood the pages darkened. I quickly turned a once safe haven of light lamenting and wild delights, to one of ridicule and self-reproach. Over time I drove myself away. The love of words instilled by my father weakened with every angered scratching of the page.

Then we arrive at 2020. A time of so much discomfort. It was inevitable, in hindsight, that my unaddressed self-critical nature and distinct lack of emotional grounding in the face of confrontation would come to a head. The honesty of loved ones is the greatest of lifelines. The doors of therapy were reopened but for the first time in my life my hands were firmly at the helm. I’m joyous to report it worked wonders. Which is to say if you are reading this with an ounce of uncertainty that talking to somebody might help you, you would be regretfully mistaken. It will help.

It was my therapist that replanted the prospect of journaling into my life. Keen for some hands on homework after every session (it’s amazing what monetary investment can do for your motivation), she shared a hefty list of journaling prompts. During a mild weekday afternoon, in the garden of a loose acquaintance for whom I was dog sitting, I finally faced the

blank page. Hello old friend. The prompts, overwhelming. The first attempt, uncomfortable. It often felt gruelling, writing down memories and emotions that had woven their way into my everyday and continued to cause me discomfort and anxiety. It was an isolating activity that forced me to be alone with myself; something I desperately avoided. But despite the discomfort, somewhere buried beneath, there was insight. A dust laden light had been turned on. The essence of my younger self that yearned to define and explore herself in amongst her own words was reignited. It was relieving to reflect and ruminate without fear of others. I articulated myself more clearly in each therapy session which led to greater progress. Best of all, I found a confidant in myself once again.

Five years on, I still meet myself daily on the page. Up until the birth of my beautiful son at the close of 2024, I journaled every day without fail for three years. My practice shifted many times. Consistency was first initiated with the introduction of daily yoga into my life; journaling just a sentence or two on my practice that day. Obscure thoughts from a pigeon pose, accidental dreams in Shavasana. Educating myself on the rhythms of nature and it's wonderfully complete cycles led me to moon journaling, using the 28 day lunar cycle as a guide for personal reflection. The full moon tradition of writing all you wish to release and watching it ceremoniously burn is a personal

favourite. Journaling is significantly more thrilling with fire involved. I dabbled in Julia Cameron’s marvellous ‘morning pages’, the endeavour of hand writing three A4 sides in a stream of consciousness, first thing in the morning. It alone I could spend an entire article on, though writing before bed ultimately became my norm. A simple unloading of the day, no matter how mundane. I would arise each morning in relief that anything of importance was logged, remembered in its most present tense and to be revisited at my leisure in two days or twenty years time. I felt lighter not having to carry so much around, just in case I should need it. There was a deep satisfaction in having scribed my life, if only briefly. A compact physical reminder that I was living, growing and changing constantly. Finishing another journal was a trophy on the shelf.

Joyfully, journaling has become more than just a personal hobby. A health scare in 2023 forced me to re-evaluate where I spent my energy and understand what I truly wanted my life to look like. The wise

words of a friend and her wonderfully assertive encouragement led me to the creation of Journal Club.

Somewhere to help others on the very same journey I began five years before; a safe space to share ideas, gain new perspectives and make friends. To my surprise, people came. A beautiful community began to blossom. I adore it. There is value far beyond what I imagined in gathering strangers around a table, quietly answering prompts on paper and then, when it feels right, discussing, unpacking and supporting each other. True friendships have been born.

As for now, Journal Club is making a return. After a hiatus while I became a mother (funnily enough, a journey embarked on by first journaling about it) we now meet on Sundays at 1pm - our new location will be confirmed on the website: www.journalclubjsy.wixsite.com/write and @journalclubjsy.

Now I challenge you to pick up your pen and try a reflective journaling exercise using my personal creation, the Reflection Buddy.

STEP 1

Find a quiet moment, morning or night. Write down each of the 8 areas.

STEP 2

One at a time, perhaps with closed eyes, watch what reflects back at you in that area. Then answer the three following questions:

Is a positive or negative emotion attached to the reflection?

What did you do this year to impact that area, both positively or negatively?

What does your ideal reflection look like? (Dream big).

STEP 3

Out of the 8 areas choose 5 that are the most important to you going forward into the new year. Set a goal for each.

STEP 4

What one small thing you can do tomorrow to get you closer to one of those goals? Try it out. Put pen to paper. Start writing. See what comes of it. I did. I’ve never looked back.

Enchanted

If you were to glance at press photos or concert footage of Georgi Mottram, you might assume she lives the life of a princess. Performing opera in a ball gown, quite literally in front of royalty at Windsor Castle, suggests a life of luxury, flitting effortlessly between performances and dinners with society’s elite. But that image of refinement is only one side of the coin. Minutes into our video interview, I met a charismatic, elated, and down-to-earth persona, surrounded by the chaos of a London flat hastily moved in and out of. Georgi was perched on the floor, leaning against the side of her bed, charging her phone amid what could only be described as a ‘floordrobe’ (albeit an exquisite one).

It had been a hectic week. She’d toured Scotland, performing at Perth Concert Hall and the Elma Theatre in Dunfermline, before heading to the Glasgow Pavilion and Cambridge’s Corn Exchange. The whirlwind journey was undertaken in a sixteensleeper tour bus, with eight in each bunked room and no running water. Living quarters were so cramped that showers and pyjama changes had to happen backstage, while their elaborate gowns travelled separately in a dedicated costume van. Backstage, the glamour disappeared instantly. The real uniform was leggings and half-zipped hoodies, right up until the final frantic minutes before curtain.

“It’s been absolutely wild,” Georgi laughed, recalling the cramped quarters and quick changes. “You’re camping at a show, whilst needing to look quite glamorous on stage. We shower at the theatre before we get in our pyjamas and go back on the bus.”

The duality of glitz and grind feels central to Georgi’s world as both a performer and an entrepreneur. After years of performing and hosting, first in London and then internationally, Georgi experienced a mindset shift. “My whole life I’ve been working so hard day in and day out for opportunities,” she said. “I basically wanted to stop waiting for the phone to ring, so I thought, do you know what? I’ll just cut out the middle man and create it myself.” This led to her co-producing, writing, and marketing The Princess Proms - over two hours of family-friendly, dress-up singalongs that attract a crowd that could easily be mistaken for a princess convention. This selfdetermined spark turned into a fully fledged show by March, snowballing into the autumn with over 60,000 tickets sold. They’ve filled cathedrals and concert halls, and secured a full American theatre tour for next year. “I can’t wrap my head around how big it’s grown,” she admitted. “It feels too good to be true.”

When asked what she thinks has made the show resonate so intensely, she admitted, “It could be that we wear really pretty dresses and sing nice songs.” But ultimately, she believes the key is the emotional core that underscores each performance. “The message is to uplift everyone,” she said. “To empower them, and remind them that they are capable, they are special, and they’ve got all the magic in the world inside of them already.”

This self-determined spark turned into a fully fledged show by March, snowballing into the autumn with over 60,000 tickets sold. They’ve filled cathedrals and concert halls, and secured a full American theatre tour for next year.

It’s a blend of magic and realism that is also characteristic of Winter Enchanted, a magical Christmas show returning to Jersey on 21st December. Presented by Georgi and Flair Entertainment, the stage at the Opera House is set to provide the pinnacle of family-friendly festive performances. With music from beloved classics such as Frozen, The Polar Express, The Snowman, The Little Mermaid, Home Alone, Wicked, and The Greatest Showman, it promises an evening of fun brought to life by a sensational cast of West End vocalists, professional musical theatre performers, and a dynamic ensemble of dancers, aerialists, and fire performers. “The show is essentially the best-loved magical animation and pop songs with this classical twist,” Georgi explained. “It’s songs you would have heard, but never like how they’re sung in the show.” The classic edge is her signature; a nod to years of intensive training and the foundation of the world she’s built.

How

do I know if I’m being realistic about love or just settling?

Thank you for such a thought-provoking question—one I know has crossed many people’s minds.

When we think about what is realistic or unrealistic in a love relationship, we may reflect on where our ideas and beliefs come from. Truthfully, it starts from the very beginning of our lives, witnessing affection (or a lack of loving interactions), including the tense energy during or following disagreements. This becomes our norm, and this lifestyle becomes our reality.

As we grow, our community expands and our view widens. As children, we observe and absorb the stories we hear from adults about their good or bad interpersonal experiences. All these factors shape our perspective on love.

Knowing this, we can see how our view on love and relationships forms. Decades ago, our world would have been limited; however, now with our access to the internet and AI features, we are fed content that influences our curiosity. This has certainly broadened our knowledge, but has it created unease and unrealistic expectations for our own intimate relationships?

If we ask couples what they believe a realistic relationship to be, there is generally a common thread.

They speak of a best-friend teamwork, built on mutual respect, open communication, and emotional safety. They accept conflicts and disagreements as normal but understanding their commitment requires them to find a place of understanding, taking the other’s feelings and viewpoint into consideration. They don’t expect every day to be harmonious, nor do they have fantasy-like expectations. They know they have to find a win-win solution to restore peace.

“Well, it wasn’t like that for me…”

I completely understand. That is why learning how to navigate the world of dating often comes with trial and error. Perhaps in the beginning, you drifted into a relationship only to realise it wasn’t what you wanted—and then discovered how messy and chaotic detangling and removing yourself can be. You may find yourself reflecting on your choices, and this is where your perception of love may start to alter.

Feeling disillusioned about love can make us question our self-worth and our ability to love or be lovable. It can send anyone on a downward spiral, causing them to lose heart and belief that love is possible. When I hear this, I

usually suggest making a list of ‘Essential’ and ‘Desirable’ qualities you might look for in a potential partner. This is a very interesting exercise, as it helps to clarify your needs and wants. To start, you may say, “But I don’t know what I want,” and my reply is always, “But I’m sure you know what you don’t want.” The object of this is to intentionally sort through what worked or didn’t work for you in past relationships. By doing this, you will be guided by whether a future partner does or doesn’t meet your ‘Essential’ qualities. Of course, over the years, things may move or be added to your list, but in my experience, the ‘Essential’ list usually only grows. This is one way of ensuring you don’t accept anything less, as anything less would feel like settling.

Now, this all sounds very logical and reasonable, but as we all know, relationships are much more complex, as individual personalities come into play. When things feel off-balance between you, it is not uncommon to overanalyse every aspect of your interactions together; unfortunately, this may trigger accusations of expecting perfection. Alternatively, trying to mind-read your partner’s intentions can produce self-doubt, and if not addressed, will hinder forward movement. This is why establishing open communication helps to calm uncertainties and adds necessary reassurance.

As you have probably gathered, this all takes cooperation and mutual goals from your partner. Understanding that you will both change as you grow means learning how to move together, which will bring ease and make life more enjoyable. However, if this isn’t present in your relationship, then your intuition may start talking to you loudly, possibly saying, “What are you doing?... This isn’t good… You deserve more.” Perhaps this is what you’re experiencing, making you question if you are settling.

Well

hello.

The Christmas season... the storm before the calm - excessive eating, tequila shots at the office party and general festive exuberance. As the new year’ dawns, those heady December memories are often met with feelings of mince-pie tinged remorse. We thought it might be useful to present some local businesses who are geared up to help you, whatever your particular flavour of ‘new year, new me!’ entails...

Hollie Mcvittie JOY TRAINING LTD

Joy Training is a personal training and body transformation company. I started my business in early 2020 as a purely online offering, which proved to be timely, as it was before the world changed forever and homes and gyms went into lockdown.

My ethos of “bright sparks shine anywhere, you don’t need all the gear,” proved really helpful to get Joy Training off to a flying start when everyone was trying to keep fit at home. I was a competitive bodybuilder at the time, and competed that year training and living solely in my tiny flat… push ups and pull ups were the way forward! Now I train people both in person and via online coaching, and I have added two new clinical offerings in the last month.

A bespoke service that I offer to clients is my Styku Infrared 3D body scanner machine. This baby travelled in from the USA and is at the forefront of health tech. As it uses infrared technology it is totally unaffected by what you eat or drink, making the results completely accurate whatever the time of day.

The 3D images that come out are amazing: it can differentiate between muscle, fat, bone and water. It does a 3D image of you, measures all of your circumferences, visceral fat, BMI, BMR… plus, if you aim for a particular bodyfat goal, it accurately sets your calories and a goal date based on all the data it has on you, including how often you workout. The infrared is completely non-invasive, meaning you can be scanned if pregnant or with a pacemaker if fitted. It’s proven really popular already!

A truly unique service I offer to clients is blood testing. The results are uploaded to my website, and can be accessed using a unique login. Next to each metric tested is an in-depth, layman’s terms explanation as to what’s been assessed, what it means, and what could impact it. Fully colour-coded, it brings visual clarity to your results. An ex client of mine, Dr Rud, is available to take bloods three times a week, which are tested locally, so results are available on my website within 48 hours. No one else offers this service in Jersey (that I know of), so it’s definitely worth trying out if you want to take control of your health data.

I believe the secret to attaining wellness is harnessing your thoughts. These lead to feelings, which lead to actions, which lead to results. To succeed in all areas of your life, you first need to start with your thoughts: if you don’t control them, they control you. My clients know the most important body part to train is your brain!

TLC PILATES JSY

I’ve been working in the fitness industry for over 25 years and now focus on movement and Pilates. In 2019, I opened TLC Pilates Jsy, a small, friendly Pilates equipment studio in town. I’ve been teaching Mat Pilates for nearly fifteen years and Reformer and Equipment Pilates for almost ten, offering small group Reformer, Mat and Mixed Equipment classes, as well as private 1:1 and 2:1 sessions. I also teach Reformer Pilates as part of the ABC (after breast cancer) exercise offering.

What makes my approach unique is the way I teach. Although I’m contemporary trained, I stay quite close to the classical Pilates exercises, adapting and modifying movements for clients with injuries, postnatal needs or movement control issues. My focus is always on slow, controlled movement, ensuring correct technique and helping clients achieve better, longer-lasting results.

For me, the key to wellness is movement: moving as well as you can and continually working to improve how your body functions. Pilates is about awareness, control and connection, learning to slow down and really listen to how your body feels and moves.

At TLC Pilates Jsy, I aim to create a calm, supportive space where every client feels comfortable and confident in their movement journey. My goal is simple: to help people move better, feel stronger, and live well through the power of Pilates.

HYPNOTHERAPIST & HOLISTIC LIFE COACH

I’m a mother, a wife, and a forever Life Student. My work as a hypnotherapist and holistic life coach began during my own search for answers after a mental breakdown a few years ago.

I didn’t enter this field from theory. I stepped into it because I needed to understand myself and rebuild from the inside out. On my own self-discovery and healing journey, I found my passion for this work and the clear sense that this is my calling. I overcame severe anxiety, depression, and panic attacks with the help of pure therapeutic essential oils and the power of my own mind. We all have a magic wand within us. We just need to learn to discover it.

We are all different individuals, and nobody can hand us our answers. My role is to help each person discover the tools that truly resonate with them so they can access their own truth. What makes my work unique is the depth of experience I bring. I don’t guide people from theory alone. I guide them from lived experience and a genuine understanding of what it feels like to unravel, rebuild, and grow. My approach brings together neuroscience, therapeutic essential oils, and hypnotherapy, supporting the mind, body, and emotions as one connected system.

For me, wellness begins with awareness. It starts when we slow down, listen to our bodies, and give ourselves space to understand the emotions behind our symptoms. When we reconnect with ourselves, clarity rises. Symptoms are simple messages from within, and when we feel peaceful and aligned inside, our outer world naturally reflects that same peace.

Hannah Mayer & Adele Patel ALIGN HEALTH AGENCY

Adele...

I studied at AECC University College and enjoy working with people of all ages. I’m passionate about helping individuals stay injury-free and active, inspired by my own love of running and fitness. My chiropractic technique is gentle, evidence-based, and tailored to each person, helping you feel and function at your best.

At Align, we take a patient-centred approach to care, focusing on improving how your body moves and how your nervous system functions in the way that’s best for you. Using gentle, hands-on techniques, we help relieve pain, restore movement, and support lasting wellbeing. Our entire team shares the same philosophy, providing a welcoming, supportive space where you feel listened to, understood and confident in your journey towards better health. We help people to not only find relief from pain, but build lasting strength and resilience, supporting both physical health and overall wellbeing.

What makes my care unique is that as well as relieving pain, I also focus on helping you understand your body. Alongside hands-on chiropractic care, I educate and empower patients with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to manage their own health, prevent future issues, and stay active. I believe the secret to wellness lies in movementwhen your body moves well, you feel well. True wellness isn’t just the absence of pain; it’s about balance, confidence, and the ability to live life fully and actively.

After studying for five years in Bournemouth, I returned home to start my career, and I’ve been part of the Align team for three years now. Align is a multidisciplinary health care practice where I work alongside other amazing practitioners at Lido Medical Centre, providing tailored care to suit anyone and everyone.

As a chiropractor, we undertake a thorough history, physical examination and specialist testing to ensure you have a tailored and unique treatment programme. This includes adjustments to promote a healthier nervous system and lifestyle advice to ensure you’re staying healthy at home.

For me, the secret to wellness is never underestimating small steps. Even tiny improvements add up over time, shaping a stronger, healthier version of you. Something as simple as getting adjusted once a month, increasing your steps per day or working five minutes of stretching into your routine may seem minor, but over time, these actions create lasting, positive chance in your body, mind and overall wellbeing.

Paul....

Kit Chamier & Paul Garrod TRUE FOOD

As a nutritionist, I take the time to really get to know each person I work with, from their lifestyle to preferences, and motivations.

We are passionate about helping people make sense of nutrition by combining solid science with practical, realistic strategies they can actually apply on a daily basis. For me, it’s about translating the evidence into something that resonates with the individual, because if it doesn’t make sense to you, it’s hard to turn it into lasting habits and real change.

Our approach is all about connection, both in person at Bond Street Health clinic in town, and online, giving clients direct access to guidance, resources and accountability every step of the way. That balance of personal support and flexibility makes it easier for people to stay consistent and see real progress. I believe the secret to success is simple: don’t get your advice exclusively online. It’s too easy to be misled or misinformed. Check the source and work with qualified, experienced professionals who take the time to understand you. Context is everything, and everyone is different. When you find someone who genuinely wants the best for you, that’s when you’ll make real progress and discover what works.

Kit....

Like Paul, I specialise in nutrition consultancy for general health and sports performance, taking a practical and realistic approach focused on long-term results.

What makes our service unique is the way we combine face-to-face consultations with our online portal. We’re really proud of this cohesive approach; it gives clients direct access to us and all our resources anytime, helping to boost accountability, consistency and results. And means the typical methods of meal tracking, which traditionally are clunky and tedious, become simplified and overseen by us. It’s a level of support and integration that isn’t available anywhere else on the Island.

I believe the secret to wellness is... there is no secret! Many people search for a quick fix or a “silver bullet,” but the truth is, lasting results come from consistency. It’s about aligning your nutrition and lifestyle with your goals, staying realistic, and building habits that you can maintain over time.

ASHTANGA YOGA JERSEY

I’ve been practicing yoga for over 15 years, studying with some of the world’s most respected teachers, including extended time in India under the late yoga master Sharath Jois. At Ashtanga Yoga Jersey, I offer daily classes in the traditional Mysore self-practice method, giving each student individual guidance to learn at their own pace. This personalised approach allows practitioners to connect deeply with their breath and cultivate a meditative, mindful practice.

Our classes are open to everyone, from beginners to experienced practitioners, and I love seeing people of all ages and abilities practicing side by side. The Mysore style is therapeutic and highly adaptable, so each student’s practice unfolds safely and naturally, tailored to their body and needs. To complement morning classes, we also explore yoga philosophy and chanting through special community events and conferences. These are free to attend to all my students, those who attend corporate classes, private classes or anyone who drops in to our newly launched lunchtime class!

In my opinion, the secret to attaining wellness is understanding that it is multifaceted, constantly shifting as we move through different stages of life. The discipline of yoga is a powerful tool for achieving overall emotional, mental and physical wellbeing, as well as building resilience and self-control. However, for yoga to truly work, it must be tended to daily. The secret isn’t in attending a class once a week, but in returning to the mat consistently, over time. Through steady, devoted practice, one cultivates equanimity, a lasting peace of mind and a sense of freedom within the body.

Emily Fernando ENHANCE FITNESS

My passion for helping others feel confident and strong comes from my own struggles with my health, body image and self-esteem during my younger years. Those experiences pushed me to learn more about training and nutrition so I could not only transform my own mindset but also help others do the same. My goal is to help everyone build confidence, strength, and balance that lasts.

All my sessions are completely private and run out of my private gym. This means that clients get the comfort and focus of training in a space with no distractions or intimidation. Any time that I don't spend on the gym floor is dedicated to my full online coaching clients via my app, where I also offer nutrition coaching. Combining my qualifications in both areas gives clients a complete, evidence-based approach that’s realistic, flexible, and enjoyable.

For me, the secret to attaining wellness revolves around balance and consistency. Wellness isn’t about being perfect, in fact it's quite the opposite: it's about finding a routine that supports both your body and your mind. When you focus on moving your body, eating whole foods 80% of the time, and taking care of yourself in ways that feel good, everything else falls into place. Pouring into myself and investing in my wellness saved me in ways that I could never explain, and now I'll spend my years ensuring that others are able to follow along the same path and reach ultimate happiness within their skin.

LIZ LEECH PSYCHOTHERAPY & COUNSELLING

I’m Liz, a psychotherapist based in Jersey, though I also work online with clients in other countries. I’ve been in this field for over 20 years, and I built my practice around helping people feel safe, seen, and supported. My background’s a mix of education, healthcare and a whole lot of life experience, which means I get where people are coming from, both professionally and personally.

My approach is very relational and I try to keep it real. I don’t have all the answers and don’t pretend to. You’re the expert of your experience, not me, but I offer a space where you can talk freely, be yourself and not feel judged. I use an integrative approach, which means I tailor the therapy to you, not the other way around. Whether it’s anxiety, relationship stuff or just feeling stuck, we work together to figure it out.

I think the ‘secret’ to wellness is consistency. Showing up even when we don’t want to. There’s no magic fix, but there is a path. Wellness starts with understanding relationships; with yourself, and others. It’s about getting to know yourself better and letting go of stuff that no longer serves you. It’s not a linear journey, and it takes courage, but with the right support you can absolutely get there.

I’m aware that being able to afford therapy is a privilege so as well as seeing clients individually I also run group therapy sessions which allows for more affordable support. In January, I’ll be running two new groups: one focused on stress and anxiety, and another on relationship issues. These are great if you want to connect with others going through similar experiences and learn together in a supportive setting. Remember, mental wellness supports your overall wellbeing and allows for meaningful connection with your life. Who wouldn’t want that?

Cam Elliott TRANSFORM TOGETHER

Hey, I’m Cameron Elliott, but everyone calls me Cam (apart from my mum!) I’m the founder of Transform Together, or TT for short: “the gym for people who don’t like gyms!”

I’ve been in the fitness industry for almost 14 years. I actually left college early after landing a work experience placement at a local gym, which went so well, that they offered me a full time job contract. The classroom was never really my thing, but the gym? That’s where I felt at home. It gave me purpose, confidence, and a sense of belonging, and that’s what I want other people to experience too.

At Transform Together, we’ve built a place for people who’ve always felt a bit out of place in regular gyms: the loud, busy, or intimidating ones. TT is a community where you can feel seen but never judged, work out freely (even if you’re red-faced and sweaty!), and be around like-minded people who lift each other up. We want people to feel like the gym is their happy place, and build confidence, connection and community.

Honestly, the secret to great physical and mental health is great social health. We become like the people we spend our time with. Our moods, habits, even our energy are contagious; it’s called emotional contagion. When you surround yourself with positive, supportive people it rubs off on you. If you want to be happy, spend time with people who bring you joy. If you want to feel confident, be around people who believe in you. That’s what we’re all about at TT; creating an environment where you can grow, connect and feel good about yourself. When your social health is strong, everything else just clicks into place.

Michelle Buckles OASIS THERAPY

I’m Michelle Buckles, a registered psychotherapist and founder of Oasis Therapy, a private practice in St Martin. My work helps people find calm, clarity, and confidence through neuroscience-informed psychotherapy. As a Human Givens Psychotherapist, I focus on meeting emotional needs in sustainable ways to build lasting wellbeing.

At Oasis Therapy, each session is tailored to the individual, drawing on the latest understanding of how the brain and body interpret emotions, providing ‘in the moment’ skills to rehearse whilst working on goals that will move a client from feeling stuck to empowered. Using a solution focused approach enables someone to see that change is possible, and through compassionate and practical care I’ve supported people through anxiety, panic, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, addiction and loss.

Beyond my private practice, I co-founded Mind Matters, a mental health service for the workplace, dedicated to supporting businesses across Jersey. Alongside fellow psychotherapist Lydia Falle, Mind Matters helps organisations create healthier, more resilient work cultures where people can thrive by receiving preventative mental health care.

For me, wellness isn’t just about relaxation or self-care, although both are important for our mental wellbeing. It’s about working with the client to identify barriers to change, instill hope that things can be different, and rehearse success. When our core psychological needs are met, both personally and professionally, we unlock the ability to live fuller, more contented, lives.

Food has become wrapped, labelled and processed beyond recognition. We’ve stopped asking where it comes from or what’s in it, losing the connection to food in the process.

At Four, we’re on a mission to change that. We believe eating well starts with understanding what you eat –knowing the ingredients, the process and the people behind it. That’s why everything we make is crafted by our talented bakers on site, using high-quality, organic ingredients from local and sustainable suppliers. No additives, no preservatives, no shortcuts.

So come in and start reconnecting with food again. From the slow-fermented sourdough to the buttery pastries and seasonal goods. We can’t wait to see you.

Day in the life

If you’ve spent more than ten minutes on Instagram, you’ve probably stumbled across a “day in the life” video. Whether it’s from the perspective of a corporate girlie with a colour-coded Notion, a matcha-sipping life coach, an Ashton Hall-esque fitness influencer doing 5 a.m. ice plunges or a sleep-deprived mum just trying to make it through the day, there’s something strangely fascinating about taking a peek into someone else’s ‘everyday’.

Unfortunately for most people who work in offices, and despite HR propaganda, most days are the same. By the time 5 p.m. hits, you’ve spent the majority of your waking day screaming six feet under emails, ever-expanding to-do lists and a blur of blue light. If you’re lucky, someone will have sent something mildly cursed into the work group chat, or you managed a restorative gossip with a colleague by the coffee machine. Whilst documenting this kind of day would be authentic, it doesn’t really justify print costs. As such, we decided to create a “day in the life” worth the hype. It makes no effort to be in any way realistic. This isn’t UGC sensationalism posing as authenticity; it’s just pure, unapologetic sensationalism.

A Morning Pick-Me-Up AT FOUR

If you’re going to curate a fantasy "day in the life,” you may as well start with leisurely elevenses at FOUR, the island’s resident sourdough temple. Even the croissants are sourdough.

This artisan bakery is the sort of place that makes you believe a loaf of good bread might actually fix all your life problems. They supply eighteen island venues such as restaurants, cafés and corporate client lunches, with local, sustainable and organic ingredients. The flour used here is tested three times a year to guarantee zero pesticides, and their 30kg sourdough starter is the final boss of fermented products.

We were taken behind the scenes to witness dough resting for twenty hours, bakers kneading and shaping with the efficiency and patience I can only aspire to, and shelves of fresh ingredients going into sandwiches that repel questionable additives. You can grab a ham and smoked cheese classic or go fancier with Spanish serrano and manchego, supplemented by delicious snacks such as protein balls or pastries. We settled in with coffees and a cinnamon bun - a warm, sticky roll of fluffy goodness. It was the kind of morning reset deserving of a place on a square grid, and the perfect beginning to our sensational day.

Window Shopping AT DREW & MAY

Every self-respecting day in the life video includes a montage of ‘running important errands’ that looks suspiciously like retail therapy.

In lieu of the required video prowess, we popped into Drew & May, a multi-label haven that has somehow mastered the art of being stylish, affordable and welcoming. The women’s section downstairs feels like stepping into a cosy winter mood board, with soft wooden textures, warm knits and going-out tops you’d actually wear more than once. Office-appropriate pieces hang alongside party-wear, making it dangerously easy to tick all the wardrobe boxes in one fell sweep.

Upstairs, the men’s section is the perfect zone for anyone tired of getting the ick from their boyfriend’s wardrobe. Think wearable basics, decent fabrics and jumpers that imply ‘emotional depth,’ but aren’t so out there that he’ll get bullied by his mates at the pub for wearing them. It’s a great spot to upgrade a partner’s style before Christmas, with quality clothes that feel set to last past the following festive season. Beyond clothes, Drew & May hosts an oasis of accessories: beanies, matching scarves, jewellery and the occasional item you didn’t come in for but suddenly realise you need. The variety means there’s genuinely something for everyone, which is refreshing in a world where many boutiques cater exclusively to one aesthetic. It’s fair to say we left Drew & May with a mental shopping list longer than when we arrived.

Styling

HOUSE OF MANE

No ideal day in the life would be complete without a beauty montage, and House of Mane delivered exactly the kind of energy we needed.

Their styling service is perfect for those looking for bouncy, California curls ahead of a festive event or special occasion. Sammie (left), resident curl magician, is the kind of stylist you instantly trust with your hair, thanks to her warmth, chattiness and obsession with healthy locks. Her dog, Kenny, had just turned one and served as both a source of entertainment and an unofficial salon mascot. The vibe is relaxed luxury - friendly and expert without being pretentious.

The salon specialises in bringing back long, healthy hair without sacrificing length. Sammie showed us photos of a long-term client whose bleached blonde hair had gone from fragile to flourishing over years of carefully applied extensions. She works with weaves, tapes, nano-beads, micro-beads, colour work and wedding styling, meaning whatever method you want or occasion you’re attending, Sammie and her team at the salon will be able to help you prep for it.

We also took a tour of the product lineup, with the Glowwa hair food standing out among the rest. This award-winning vegan supplement is the crown jewel of hair health, promising improved growth, reduced shedding and the kind of glowing sheen that tricks passers-by into believing you drink three litres of water a day. The collagen creamer offers similar benefits - stronger hair, hydrated skin and better joints. Sammie swears by them both as the elixir of the hair and skin gods. On leaving, my curls were flawless, and I had that post-salon feeling of confidence mixed with indulgence that elevated the rest of the day.

Cocktails AT BLAKES

Blakes truly shifted the sensational day in the life into full cinematic mode. The new hotspot on King Street that everyone’s dying to try, Blakes is equal parts bistro, cocktail bar and aesthetic haven. The interiors are chic but welcoming, with clean, modern lines that retain enough classic charm to avoid feeling like a replica of every other minimalist hospitality venue. Their menu is equally enticing, offering plates like Norwegian smoked salmon on sourdough, petite steak ciabatta, seabass fillet and Jersey Beef Smash Burger. For the crowd who enjoy something a little sweeter, they offer a daily selection of homemade cakes and pastries from The Sweet Trolley.

First, Flo ordered the Paloma: a refreshing blend of tequila, grapefruit soda, lime juice and a touch of salt. I requested their speciality, the Strawberry Basil Mint

Moscow Mule, a current crowd favourite. Blending vodka with sweet strawberry purée, zesty lime, aromatic basil and mint, then topping it with ginger beer, the cocktail felt like a light and refreshing twist in a brass mug. To follow, Flo tried the Picante Margarita, a mix of tequila, lime, Cointreau, agave and just enough chilli to keep you on your toes, whilst I opted for the Indica Sidecar, a tropical spin on the classic, pairing rum warmth with citrus brightness and a spicy edge. It was the perfect final stop for a gloriously unrealistic day, and definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for an after-work decompression drink.

Confidence Starts with Skin

Ask anyone who’s ever struggled with their skin and they’ll tell you, it’s not just about how you look, it’s about how you feel. Breakouts, redness, dullness, fine lines, they can all chip away at your confidence. For Kim Le Brun, founder of Kim Le Brun Advanced Skin Beauty, that understanding is deeply personal.

“I know what it’s like to hide behind your hair or makeup because you don’t feel comfortable in your skin,” Kim says. “When mine was bad, it affected everything, my confidence, my social life, how I felt walking into a room. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping others. I want people to feel proud of their skin, not hide it.”

That empathy, combined with expert training and cutting-edge technology, is at the heart of Kim’s practice. Her treatment space feels calm, professional and reassuring, a place where science meets self-care. Each appointment begins with an in-depth consultation to understand your skin’s unique needs, lifestyle and goals. From there, Kim creates a tailored plan to deliver results that don’t just look good in the mirror, but feel good too.

So, what are the treatments making waves at Kim Le Brun Advanced Skin Beauty right now?

1. The Focus Dual Machine

This is a true game-changer, combining HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) and Radio Frequency Microneedling in one device. Together, they lift, tighten and firm the skin at every level, from deep collagen stimulation to surface rejuvenation. It’s perfect for those wanting real, visible results without invasive procedures. Think smoother, tighter skin and a beautifully defined jawline that looks effortlessly natural.

2. Illumi Facial with IPL Excelight

If your skin is feeling dull, uneven or sun-damaged, this treatment is a revelation. The Illumi Facial uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to target pigmentation, redness and visible capillaries, leaving skin looking clear, fresh and luminous. It’s like pressing reset on your complexion.

Somewhere in the mists of childhood, most of us remember that first awkward conversation where mysteries were unravelled, and we took our first tottering step into a grown-up world. Where do babies come from? Flown in by stork? Baked into being by love, like a bun in the oven? We learn about the birds and the bees, the simple, wondrous mechanics of how we came to be, and perhaps imagine that one day, we’ll make our own miracle.

For many, that miracle arrives easily. But for others, the path to parenthood is far more tangled. Beyond the birds and the bees lies an untold story - one full of brambles along the way. A story that deserves daylight and open air, so we can better understand the challenges some face, and help each other navigate them with compassion.

To mark Fertility Awareness Week (3-7 November), Jersey charity Tiny Seeds launched The Birds and the Bees, a campaign that explores the real, emotional journeys behind fertility. Through a series of short films created with care and candour, the campaign gave a voice to islanders who have faced a complex path in the hope of becoming parents. Some stories end in joy, some in heartbreak - all reveal the courage and humanity that too often go unseen.

These are the birds and bees for adults - conversations that strip away the silence and stigma surrounding fertility, and replace it with empathy, humanity and honesty. In this issue, we continue that conversation through a series of portraits and profiles celebrating the many paths to parenthood.

Fertility in Focus: The Facts Behind the Feelings

1 in 6 adults worldwide — around 17.5% of the population — experience infertility.

In Jersey, over 420 people visit the Assisted Reproduction Unit each year, with roughly 100 IVF cycles facilitated annually.

Only a small proportion currently qualify for publicly funded IVF due to strict eligibility criteria.

Infertility is recognised by the World Health Organisation as a disease that can have serious mental health impacts, including anxiety, depression and isolation.

Since 2021, Tiny Seeds has become Jersey’s voice for fertility - providing counselling, grants, awareness initiatives and a community of understanding for those navigating the brambles along the way.

I first came across Tiny Seeds about four years ago when I was trying for my second baby and experiencing recurrent loss. I was advised onisland to put the first three losses down to bad luck – and my age. But when I went on to experience a fourth and fifth loss, I was completely broken. Some were missed miscarriages later in the first trimester, even after detecting a heartbeat, and frustratingly, local tests kept coming back normal.

I remember thinking, I can’t do this anymore. One of Tiny Seeds’ founding members, Lucy Stephenson, along with my husband, encouraged me to attend one of the support groups. I joined a “Yoga in the Park” session at Howard Davis Park and afterwards sat with a small group of women who were also facing fertility challenges. The only way I can describe that moment is like having a huge hug wrapped around me.

There were two big takeaways – I wasn’t alone and most importantly, my feelings of challenging, wanting to seek a second and third opinion off-island were entirely valid. I am incredibly grateful that I went on to have my healthy baby girl, Florence.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced—whether emotional, physical, social, or financial? There are so many emotions that come with secondary infertility – when you already have a child. It can be a very lonely and isolating experience. I found the lack of understanding and information around unexplained secondary infertility and recurrent loss particularly frustrating.

I dived deep into research, reading medical journals, and joining online recurrent loss support groups where so many women were desperately seeking answers. By chance, a friend I’d met at a party in Manchester years before reconnected with me through one of these groups. We discovered we had similar experiences, and she shared the contact details of Professor Siobhan Quenby, one of the world’s leading recurrent loss specialists. We both went on to participate in Tommy’s clinical trial with Professor Quenby. I’d read that she’d helped a woman who’d lost 13 babies, and I thought, if anyone can help me, it’s her. I jumped on a last-minute flight, drove from Heathrow to Birmingham, and checked into a hotel off the motorway late on a Sunday night, just praying it would all be worth it. It tore me apart to leave my son at home as I chased a dream to grow our family. My husband and I had already agreed this would be our last attempt. Miscarriage is both physically and emotionally exhausting, and I didn’t want my son to see me so broken.

When I met Professor Quenby, she said, “I really hope this is what you have – otherwise, you may need to accept that you might not have another baby.” I tested positive for endometritis (not to be confused with endometriosis) and with treatment – anti-malarial medication and steroids for slightly elevated Natural Killer cells – I had my miracle daughter. Incredibly, my friend and I both went on to have our babies within days of each other. We’ll never know whether it was science, but I can’t help feeling it was more than coincidence.

What’s one thing you wish people wouldn’t say to someone experiencing fertility struggles?

There are quite a few! Most were said with the best intentions by people I love, but they can still sting. Things like, “At least you know you can get pregnant,” “Are you sure it isn’t your job causing stress?”, “Just relax!”, or - worse when people didn’t know, “When are you going to give your child a sibling?” None of these are helpful. What people don’t realise is that comments like these, however well-meaning, can make you feel even more isolated or misunderstood. It’s better to say, “I’m sorry, I’m here for you.”

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just beginning their fertility journey, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid to reach out for support and seek advice from charities like Tiny Seeds. I’m just one of 500 people who benefit from their help each year in Jersey. The World Health Organisation estimates that infertility affects around one in six people globally. You’re not alone in this journey.

What would you like others to understand about the impact of fertility challenges?

Pregnancy after loss isn’t straightforward – even when everything is going well, it’s hard to believe you’ll actually hold a healthy baby in your arms at the end. The emotional toll doesn’t just disappear. The support I found through Tiny Seeds was invaluable. Meeting others who understood and validated my feelings was a huge comfort.

Christina Gates

I am a 45-year-old “solo mum by choice” to a beautiful 18-month-old girl called Hope Danielle. Hope was conceived via IVF using donor sperm. I chose this route as I desperately wanted a child but suddenly found myself single at 40. I didn’t want to force a relationship for the sake of having a child and decided to try to become a solo parent. My IVF journey spanned three years and included a failed transfer and two missed miscarriages.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced—whether emotional, physical, social, or financial?

The biggest challenge for me was emotional. The process dominates your life during each cycle of treatment and there is an anxious wait to get to each milestone. Will my scans go well enough to proceed with treatment? Will enough eggs be collected? Will the eggs fertilise? Will the embryos be viable? Will the embryo transfer be successful (the dreaded “two week wait”)? Will I miscarry again? I would often get to one stage, it would fail, and I would have to start again. My heart broke each time, especially when I had made it quite far down the line.

IVF is also a logistical nightmare, which causes such strain on day to day life! Fortunately I had flexibility and the support of amazing colleagues at work. My social life suffered. It was difficult to make firm plans whilst accommodating scans, injections and last-minute dashes to Bristol for treatment. I was very private about my fertility journey while it was happening, and some friendships suffered due to my perceived absence, last minute cancellations and lack of participation in social events.

What’s one thing you wish people wouldn’t say to someone experiencing fertility struggles?

Any sentence starting with “At least…” was hard for me to hear (for example “at least we know you can get pregnant” as I was going through a miscarriage). It was always said with love by someone with the best of intentions, however, I was feeling too much grief in the moment to try to look on the bright side. Also, any form of unsolicited advice if

the person giving it is not a medical professional or has not been through a fertility struggle themself.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just beginning their fertility journey, what would it be? It really helped to talk through my feelings with my closest friends and family. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had opened up more to those around me while I navigated my journey. I met other single ladies at different stages of their fertility journeys through Tiny Seeds, and attended regular catch ups with them - I found it helpful to chat to those who had been or were going through the process themselves. Their stories inspired me and gave me hope.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just beginning their fertility journey, what would it be? Being childless not by choice is heartbreaking. Every day you walk in the real world, you are faced with examples of what you so desperately want. It can be difficult seeing the pregnancy announcements, attending the baby showers and seeing the back-to-school photos on social media. I was so happy for those who already had their beautiful children, and simultaneously so sad for myself, particularly at times when I had suffered a loss or treatment had failed. When you undertake fertility treatment, there is no guarantee of success and the whole process can be incredibly overwhelming. I am blessed to have my longedfor baby, I appreciate every day with her, and my heart goes out to all those still in the fertility trenches.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced—whether emotional, physical, social, or financial?

One of the biggest challenges was navigating this journey while in the second year of a demanding role as CEO for a local charity. While my boss was incredibly supportive, managing the intense hormonal fluctuations from treatment alongside high-stakes work pressures required immense focus and emotional regulation. There were days it felt like I was running two marathons at once. Emotionally, the primary challenge was grieving the loss of a genetic connection to my child and the future I had always imagined. It was a profound process of letting go. Financially, the cost is a significant hurdle. It’s a huge investment with no guarantee of success, which adds another layer of stress to an already overwhelming process. Socially, it can be isolating when it feels like everyone around you is starting their families conventionally. It takes a lot of resilience to navigate baby showers and birth announcements while facing your own uncertainty.

What’s one thing you wish people wouldn’t say to someone experiencing fertility struggles?

“Just relax and it will happen.” While almost always wellintentioned, it completely dismisses the medical realities of infertility. It subtly implies that the struggle is a result of stress rather than a genuine physiological issue, which

My fertility journey began unexpectedly when I was 37 and single in London. I decided to proactively freeze my eggs, only to be told after testing that this wasn’t an option for me. The diagnosis was diminished ovarian reserve and a scan could only find one antral follicle, which meant that a procedure to retrieve eggs for freezing would not be viable. Hearing the recommendation to use an egg donor was a devastating and completely unexpected blow.

A few years later, having returned to my home in Jersey during the pandemic, a pivotal conversation with my mum changed everything. She asked if I had ever considered using donors and assured me of her and my dad’s unconditional support if I chose that path. That heartfelt encouragement was the catalyst I needed to move forward.

I threw myself into research, ultimately choosing a clinic in Alicante, Spain, for its excellent success rates. Using both an egg and a sperm donor, I had a fresh embryo transfer, and to my immense relief, the first transfer was successful. My son was born in December 2022, and has totally changed my life.

Finding a community of other mums through a group like Tiny Seeds has been important, creating powerful friendships with women who truly understand this challenging path to parenthood.

can feel incredibly invalidating. You can’t “relax” your way into having viable eggs or overcoming a diagnosed condition. A much better approach is to simply say, “I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’m here for you if you ever want to talk.”

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just beginning their fertility journey, what would it be?

Do your own research, ask countless questions, and don’t be afraid to seek a second opinion if something doesn’t feel right. Surround yourself with support. Whether it’s a formal group, an online forum, or a few trusted friends who truly “get it”. You don’t have to go through this alone, and connecting with others on a similar path can be an absolute lifeline.

What would you like others to understand about the impact of fertility challenges?

I’d like people to understand that fertility challenges are not a single event but a prolonged period of crisis and grief. It’s an invisible struggle that affects your identity, your relationships, and your mental health in ways that aren’t always apparent on the surface. It’s a journey that forces you to confront difficult decisions and fundamentally changes you, long after the journey itself is over.

I’m 54 years old, and have four daughters. Two of them came through fertility treatment. The journey was a mixture of emotions and, to be fair, I am still on the journey.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced—whether emotional, physical, social, or financial?

For me, it has been the emotional and physical challenge.

The physical is to see what your partner goes through, from the start to the end of each cycle. They are doing everything possible to give the treatment the best chance of success. That’s what you tell yourself, but does it help? Is it worth the anxiety/stress? Well to people on a fertility journey, it is.

The emotional side is the ups and downs of the journey - upset, heartache, the failed cycles and just seeing your partner destroyed by the news received but there is also the joy when successful.

One failed cycle, I remember when we were in the Natural History Museum in London, having a coffee, and I was walking back from the till. I saw my wife on the phone and then the tears started to come. We were in London for the next part of the process but our embryos hadn’t thawed – I knew this from just looking at my wife. No words needed or could be said at that time but this leads to another part of the journey for me – I was also devastated but found it hard to show/share my emotions as at this time it was my wife who needed looking after but I also needed

looking after. From my part, this is sometimes the lonely part of a fertility journey for the male. I had no one to speak to and felt I couldn’t burden my wife with my emotions as she was going through the same thing

What’s one thing you wish people wouldn’t say to someone experiencing fertility struggles?

“I’m sure it will work! You could get a dog. if unsuccessful!” These sound silly, but are said.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just beginning their fertility journey, what would it be?

I think nine times out of 10 if people are starting the fertility journey they have made decisions already. My advice would be not to be afraid to move away from the plan, and don’t be scared to ask questions, join forums and go out to Tiny Seeds, as these are the things that help you on your journey.

What would you like others to understand about the impact of fertility challenges?

These challenges consume people, and it costs nothing to listen, think before you speak and be there for people, if you know they are on this journey.

It’s not “just a medical issue.”

Fertility challenges often come with waves of grief, uncertainty, and loss that can feel invisible to others. People may be mourning not just the inability to conceive, but the loss of a vision of life they had imagined.

Julia-Anne Dix

Like many people we started trying for a baby quite soon after we got married. I wasn’t in a rush to get pregnant but after nothing was happening for some time, I sought out advice from my GP and started the long process of investigations eventually being diagnosed with “unexplained infertility”.

This diagnosis means exactly what its name says: it is “unexplained” so there is no medical explanation for why I couldn’t get pregnant. In the UK, unexplained infertility accounts for around one in four cases of infertility. I found this really difficult to process as I wasn’t able to pinpoint what was going wrong and therefore found it hard to work out what I could do to solve the issue.

There are some medical interventions that can take place on island this includes women having assistance with ovulation by taking medication and being monitored by scans. This was the start of the multiple appointments at the Assisted Reproduction Unit (ARU) which often are scheduled in work time (although they try to be as flexible as they can depending on availability). Over a period of a year we tried this and at one point we did have some hope which sadly ended in a loss.

We started the IVF journey via Bristol which had its own complications as it was during COVID. My first cycle was actually cancelled as I hadn’t responded sufficiently to the hormones (which involved daily injections over a period of weeks). I cannot explain properly in words how that first cycle being cancelled felt, it felt like we had already failed before we had even got started. Over the next year we undertook two egg collections and three transfers (often referred to as three rounds of IVF). I focused outside of the IVF treatment on making sure I was doing anything I could to help make it work such as taking the right vitamins, yoga, meditation, acupuncture and chiropractic treatment. We were very fortunate that my third transfer of my final frozen embryo was when our daughter was conceived. We feel incredibly lucky with how our journey ended.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced—whether emotional, physical, social, or financial?

The biggest challenge for me was the emotional toll. Anyone that knows me would agree that I always like to be in control and this was the one thing I had no control over which I found very difficult. After every failed round I felt like I had failed, however I still had to get on with my day-to- day life and not show outwardly how I felt inside. The journey is an emotional rollercoaster for both parties involved and it can unfortunately take many years with no confirmed end date or indeed guaranteed success.

What’s one thing you wish people wouldn’t say to someone experiencing fertility struggles?

“Be patient or just relax, it will happen.” The reality is no-one actually knows that for certain. The science of IVF is amazing and thankfully it gives so many parents the opportunity to become parents. However, that is not always the case and people need to be mindful of that.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just beginning their fertility journey, what would it be?

Seek out advice from others also on the same journey. I reached out to Tiny Seeds following their initial JEP campaign and attended meetings and met some wonderful like-minded people who were going through a similar journey. I also did lots of research online or and listened to podcasts. There is also a huge online community known as trying to conceive #TTC on social media which offers a wealth of knowledge and support.

What would you like others to understand about the impact of fertility challenges?

If based in Jersey and undergoing IVF, we face so many additional challenges due to our geographic location and not being able to undertake IVF on island. This not only increases the financial burden but also requires people to fly off island at the last minute which can be difficult to juggle with jobs and also dealing with flight cancellations and delays due to weather. All of these additional challenges add to an already incredibly stressful process adding to the emotional toll.

With our first child, we luckily, had no issues falling pregnant. So when we decided to grow our family again, it was quite upsetting to see a negative test every month, despite meticulously tracking my cycle.

Despite being able to conceive “easily” we unfortunately experienced three miscarriages in 2024, but with the guidance and support from the Women’s Health Hub, we found the underlying cause and were able to take steps to mitigate the risk of it happening again. My partner and I reached out to Tiny Seeds to learn how to support each other better and connect with other couples on their IVF journeys. We had planned to start IVF later this year, but life had other plans - as we are expecting our second in 2026.

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced—whether emotional, physical, social, or financial?

The greatest challenge I’ve faced in this journey was feeling isolated and alone. For a long time, I didn’t give myself permission to speak openly about our miscarriages, not even with my partner, and that silence caused our relationship to break down. Through therapy, learning to work together again, and even finding comfort in small things like playing rugby, we’ve slowly rebuilt ourselves as a team. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s shown us how strong we can be when we face things together.

What’s one thing you wish people wouldn’t say to someone experiencing fertility struggles?

“It’ll be your turn soon” while positive, it can feel painful because we don’t know if or when that moment will come. Sometimes just listening, and being there can mean more than reassuring words.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just beginning their fertility journey, what would it be?

Never forget you’re a team, especially when you’re knee deep in the trenches of TTC… It can easily become a chore, so talk to each other, be there for the highs and lows and find time for fun. This journey’s a marathon not a sprint, and you’re both in it together.

What would you like others to understand about the impact of fertility challenges?

Fertility challenges can be incredibly heavy, even when they’re not visible to others. They impact your emotions, your relationship, and your sense of self. For us, the hardest part wasn’t just the miscarriages, but how isolating it felt when we didn’t know how to talk about them. I’d love others to understand that everyone’s journey looks different and there’s no right or wrong way to cope. Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can offer someone going through it is kindness, patience, and space to share when they’re ready. Behind every fertility story is silent resilience, hope, and courage.

‘tis the season to RELAX

For many of us, the festive season is a mix of joy and overwhelm. It’s a beautiful time, but it can also be one of the most stressful. Between the social plans, family gatherings, shopping lists and financial pressures, it’s easy to lose sight of what the holidays are meant to be about: connection, rest, and simple moments of joy.

I see so many people who feel run down by the time Christmas actually arrives, and I’ve certainly felt that myself. It’s completely normal. The constant rush can leave our bodies flooded with stress hormones, which is why it’s so important to give ourselves permission to pause.

There are a few simple things I always suggest to help people find calm amid the chaos. Start by taking short mindful breaks each day: even five minutes of slow breathing can make a difference. Try to notice the small things that bring comfort: the scent of pine, the flicker of candlelight, the warmth of a hug. These sensory moments help us return to the present.

Spending time in nature is another powerful reset. A quiet winter walk, listening to birdsong or simply standing under the stars can soothe the nervous system in ways that screens never could. I also love using aromatherapy at this time of year; oils like lavender, frankincense and sweet orange can lift the spirit and ease tension.

And if you’re looking for a more structured way to support your wellbeing, I’d love to invite you to my Relaxation Classes, which begin in early January at St Ouen’s Parish Hall. These weekly sessions combine gentle strengthening exercises, mindful movement, breathwork and guided relaxation. They’re suitable for all ages and abilities, and the focus is always on feeling good in your body and moving at your own pace.

The classes are light-hearted and welcoming: a space to slow down, laugh a little, and build both strength and balance from the inside out. Each one-hour class costs £15, and you’re welcome to drop in or come regularly, whatever fits best around your routine. Christmas doesn’t have to be chaotic: with a little mindfulness and a few nurturing rituals, we can all find moments of calm, and carry that sense of balance into the new year.

Every house has character, though some try to hide it under one of Farrow & Ball’s twenty shades of white, plush grey furnishings and bifold doors. Holly Lodge gives the bird to such dwellings, with its exposed beams, patterned wallpaper and those quirky, upper-middleclass walls drenched in Little Greene. It’s a big, confident five-bedroom house that looks like it’s been standing there since the dawn of agriculture, but was actually renovated in 2016 by someone with a personality somewhere between Emma Bridgewater and Jeremy Clarkson in his Diddly Squat era.

Holly Lodge stands in certainty within the romantic idealism of St. Ouen. The parish is basically Jersey’s equivalent of the Pacific Northwest: green, remote and slightly mythic. ‘Poldark’ could have been filmed there. The morning air smells like it’s been filtered through moss. Rumour has it Caspar David Friedrich painted ‘Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog’ on a cliffside at Grève de Lecq. Holly Lodge, just a stone’s throw from this beach, is a shelter from the storm - complete with quirky hanging bubble lights and a log burner that looks like it warmed a farming family in the 1800s, despite probably still being under warranty from Home Fires. Minimalist middle-aged mums with a penchant for calling their son’s Union Jack–themed bedroom “eclectic” may have an aneurysm stepping into this wallpapered, countryside haven of originality.

As a guest entering Holly Lodge, you’d assume the owner worked hard enough to have their life in order, but not so hard that they forgot what weekends are for - promising a varied, intellectual dinner party conversation that doesn’t just revolve around interest rates. At the heart of the home is an openplan kitchen and dining area - the kind where you can cook risotto and still feel part of the conversation. The living room is spacious enough to make your voice echo, which could either feel glamorous or quiet, depending on your mental state. There’s also a study - a gentle reminder that whilst work has now seeped out of the office and into every room of our lives, there is still room for a productive sanctuary.

The master suite feels like a small apartment of its own. The ensuite promises the tranquillity of a spa: chrome, light and marble, with the soft whisper of good water pressure.

There are five bedrooms, which seems both luxurious and fantastically over-gunned. It’s the perfect set-up for those with four children: three planned, and then the final little straggler who, seven years younger, destroyed your dream of retiring early and becoming an empty nester. Four of these bedrooms have ensuites, meaning you don’t have to fear the intimacy of spitting out toothpaste together in a shared sink. Each room is calm, pristine and noncommittal - the perfect space for teenagers to flit through their everchanging phases and personalities over the years.

The garden is neat, lawned and simple: the perfect choice for someone who prefers the idea of gardening to the act of it. It’s the kind of outdoor space that invites you to sip, grill, compliment the shrubbery, and then go back inside before the midges arrive.

It has a dressing room so big you could lose an argument in it, but the structure of a home from a time when things didn’t just get tossed; they were rebuilt. Maybe that’s the appeal of renovated homes: that any problem - literal or emotional - can be solved with the right amount of money and reliable contacts.

From the garden, you can see fields and trees and probably a tractor if you wait around long enough. There are two patios, one south-facing and one west-facing, which means you can chase the sun all day like someone trying to outrun their 9–5. A type of countryside that feels close enough to touch, but not close enough to inconvenience you. In other words, it’s rural living for Molton Brown enthusiasts who still need the sweet relief of good Wi-Fi.

A double garage stands at the edge of the property, with space for two precious cars that may or may not see the road. The driveway fits four more, because estate agents measure potential in numbers. With 3,853 square feet, five bedrooms, five bathrooms, two patios and one very aspirational postcode, Holly Lodge promises a home worthy of the stamp duty.

Going with the flow.

When it comes to water, most of us never stop to think about where it comes from. In the words of Mark Bowden, Jersey Water’s Head of Water Resilience and Emergency Planning, “that’s exactly how it should be.” Having worked in the industry for nearly thirty years, he knows the ins and outs of making sure the Island always has access to safe, clean water. Here, he tells us about the work that goes into keeping Jersey’s supply flowing come rain or shine, his collaboration with the farming community, and the challenges of planning for an unpredictable climate.

“There are three main parts to my job. The first is water resource planning, making sure we have enough water for the Island, both now and in the future. We look at the long-term picture but also manage short-term issues like dry spells and droughts. The second is reservoir safety. Jersey’s six reservoirs fall under the Jersey Reservoirs Law, so we handle their inspection, maintenance, and compliance. This is to ensure their safety and reliability for decades to come. And the third is emergency planning: preparing for when things don’t go to plan.

That could mean drought, flood, fire, pandemic, or any other disruption. We work closely with the Government, the emergency services, parishes, and other utilities to coordinate our response and keep water supplies safe and running. It’s all about anticipating risks, preparing for them, and then responding effectively when something happens.

I’ve worked in the water industry for nearly 30 years, starting out at United Utilities in the North West of England. I’ve done everything from mopping floors in treatment works to managing major operational teams. When I moved to Jersey in 2016, a key part of my role was to develop a new long-term drought plan for the Island. I was attracted by the challenge as it’s a huge responsibility. At Jersey Water, you can really shape the future of the Island’s supply, and that’s something I find motivating every day.

Our main focus is making sure the Island always has enough water, now and for decades to come. Climate change means rainfall is becoming more unpredictable, and in recent years we’ve seen some dry springs and summers. That puts real pressure on reservoir storage levels, so we need to plan carefully and build resilience into the water system.

On the water resources side, there are two parts to the equation: supply and demand. On the supply side, we look at how much water we can capture and store, making the most of the Island’s natural resources, and where we can add climate-independent capacity, such as desalination. On the demand side, it’s about reducing water use and leaks as much as possible.

Our ‘Big Butt’ campaign has just finished, where we partnered with four local garden retailers to encourage people to invest in a water butt and collect rainwater through the winter. It’s a simple, practical way to save water, and it’s better for your garden too. You can use collected rainwater for watering plants, washing cars or cleaning outdoor windows instead of using drinking water. It’s like having thousands of little reservoirs in people’s homes and gardens.

At home, there are lots of small actions people can take. Avoid using a hosepipe where possible. Reuse washingup water for plants. Catch the cold water that runs while your shower warms up - it can fill a bucket in no time, which you can then use for watering or topping up ponds. And for anyone wanting to see how they could save more, we have the Get Water Fit tool on our website that gives personalised tips based on your habits. It’s not about stopping use; it’s about stopping waste. Lots of Islanders making small changes can have a big impact overall. It can help us leave more water in the environment and reduce the need for enforced hosepipe restrictions.

Over the next few years, we’re investing in Jersey’s infrastructure. The expansion of the desalination plant is the next big project. It’s a climate-independent source of supply, meaning that, unlike a reservoir, it doesn’t depend on how much rainfall we get. People often ask why we don’t just build a new reservoir, but new

reservoirs are extremely expensive, and they take decades of planning, consultation and approvals. Desalination gives us a reliable way to increase capacity while keeping costs as low as possible. Whilst it’s expensive to operate desalination, it’s a lot cheaper overall because we already have one that we can upgrade and expand. Once you’ve invested in a reservoir, which costs hundreds of millions of pounds, these costs are effectively baked into customer bills in the future. We want to keep costs as low as they can be, whilst remaining resilient to the drought.

The biggest challenge is balancing quantity and quality. We need to deliver on both, but quality and quantity are so interrelated with each influencing the other. Several years ago, we stopped taking water from sources affected by historic PFAS contamination around the airport. This makes us resilient in a drought and gives us fewer options during dry spells.

Our farming community is vital to Jersey’s culture and history and it needs to be part of our future. For a decade now, we’ve worked closely through the Action for Cleaner Water Group, which brings together Jersey Water, the Government’s Environment Department and local farmers.

By sharing knowledge and understanding each other’s challenges, we’ve made real progress. Nitrate and pesticide levels have reduced significantly, and we have achieved another year of 100% compliance with all water quality standards. That’s a huge achievement and very rare, not only in the UK but worldwide across the water industry. It’s a great example of what collaboration can achieve. We’ve

strengthened relationships, improved understanding on both sides, and shown how farming and water management can work hand in hand. The results speak for themselves: better water quality, healthier soils, and a more sustainable approach to land management.

Our ‘Big Butt’ campaign has just finished, where we partnered with four local garden retailers to encourage people to invest in a water butt and collect rainwater through the winter.

We’re long-term supporters of the Jersey Farming Conference, which is a great forum for open dialogue, and we are also now involved with Regen Gathering. Supporting these initiatives benefits everyone: every activity on the land can affect water quality. We want all farming on the Island to be both successful and sustainable, enhancing the environment, not harming it, because good farming practices mean better water resilience. Working in water gives you a real sense of purpose. We’re providing something essential; you turn on the tap and clean, safe water comes out. Most people never think twice about it, and that’s exactly how it should be. Behind the scenes, a lot of work goes into keeping it that way. Everyone at Jersey Water feels that responsibility. We’re all customers as well as employees, so we care deeply about what we do. It’s an honest, important industry and one that directly affects people’s lives every single day.”

Gaëlle Deschamps

GForce founder Gaëlle Deschamps reveals her path from a childhood inspired by her single mum to a top leadership coach. She discusses pivotal "chance moments," overcoming challenges, and embracing ambition.

BEGINNINGS AND ASPIRATIONS

It all started in my childhood. My mum was an English teacher in a secondary girl school in the outskirts of Paris (for girls who could not cope in the state system) and dedicated her life to helping them aim higher. I saw her generous, loving, positive leadership style each and every day. Unwavering. A force for good. Refusing to give up on a girl based on her academic results. I did not realise it at the time but it gave me an incredible map for what good leadership looks like. My mum was my female role model. She raised me as a single mum, work hard to make ends meet. She believed in me and told me I could be anything I wanted.

PIVOTAL MOMENT THAT SET YOUR TRAJECTORY?

That’s a funny one. One thing you have to know about me is that I am a planner. I love a vision board. I love strategy sessions. At work and at home. But what I am doing now feels like a series a “chance moments”. Unplanned. Just gifts steering me gently towards a greater path. Helping me find my purpose, my true north, my why.

I’ll share 3 particular events which changed my trajectory:

My manager at Coca-cola decided to send me (without me asking for it, which was unusual in itself as I am very proactive when it comes to training) on a coaching training. It was love at first sight. After the first day, I asked if I could complete the full certification and become an Executive coach internally on top of my day job as a Global Marketeer. He said yes. Upon graduation, I became Executive Coach to High Potential women at Coca-cola, then I certified to be a Leadership Faculty in the Coca-Cola University. Then, I left in 2021 and set up my own Leadership training business, GForce. I never looked back. I absolutely love being the master of my ship.

My husband sailing across the Atlantic for his milestone birthday 3 years ago and coming back to our London home saying he wanted a change and move out of London (this came as a shock as we had spent 25 years there, we had literally just renovated our flat, our children schooling was sorted and we had never discussed a move).

A random ad on Google advertising Jersey as an ideal relocation place. I called the number. Vicky Pemberton from relocate Jersey picked the phone up. The rest is history. 3 months later, our visa in hand, our kids started school here in Jersey.

New everything: new home, new beginning, new routines, new hobbies, new friends. We knew no one. Just 3 referrals. And what a welcoming and warm community we are now part of. I would not switch back for the world. Waking up with the view of the sea and the sunrise everyday is so previous. Life here is very special. In fact we have friends who followed us and moved to Jersey too since we moved.

CHALLENGES AND LESSONS

I have had my fair share. We all do. Nothing is ever plain sailing. My first one was lack of financial means. When my parents divorced we suddenly had very little (no money for a car, carpet, sofa…we sat on cushions on the concrete floor). My mum had to work 2 jobs, and worked every single day of the year. No summer holiday. No Easter holiday. It gave me such a drive, fire in my belly to never have to experience this again. I worked since I was 14, on my free time after school, and during my holidays. I paid for my own dream bed at 15 years old. I was so proud. It was a mezzanine bed, it had stairs. It felt like I was creating my world. I also researched jobs which could give me an international career and a good life. Then I reverse engineered it, what do I need to study to get this job. Maths and physics was the royal path back then in France. So I choose these for my Baccalauréat. I prepared so intensely for a year to take the competitive exam to get in one of the best French business school. Then I got a scholarship to study in America. It was the beginning of a new life. Never went back to France. To this day, I really believe that if there is a will, there is a way.

SKILLS AND MINDSET

I’m Resourceful. I would always find a way. You’ve also got to turn a negative into a positive. If a teacher said I could not aim high or dream too big such as being accepted in the best business schools in France, I would want to prove him wrong and work harder to get it. Ambition and vision are key. I had a very clear plan in my head since I was 12. And I pretty much achieved everything on it! I also have drive. I don’t spend too much time debating, hesitating. I can take decisions quite quickly and act fast. I love doing. Implementing. Seeing the results of ideas. And because I am doing a lot of things I love, it gives me energy to keep going. But don’t get me wrong. I love to pause and reflect too. Nothing beats a cup of London fog on my terrace, admiring the sea view

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING LEADERS

I would talk about the seasons of life, that life is not always spring or summer. That some periods feel like winter, harsh and cold. But it has a role and with consistent work, Spring will soon come. Every experience (good and bad) helps us be better human beings. I would talk about the importance of self awareness and designing the life you dream of. Don’t listen to anyone else…

If you’re a woman reading this, I would say, don’t listen to anti-aging jargon. Women get better with age. I turned 50 this year and I feel amazing. More me than ever. Being 50 rocks. There is no age limit to start something new. To reinvent yourself. Stay open. Stay curious. Have side hustles. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Side hustles keep you sane and bring you

Join, create, find your tribe. Connection is what makes us truly happy. No success will taste good alone. Take time for friendships. Family. Meeting new people. Surround yourself with inspiring leaders. We become like the 5 people we spend the most time with. Be choosy!

Family Law in the Season of Change

Words:Matthew Godden (pictured right) and Peter Blandin (pictured left)

As we approach the new year we may take stock: of our jobs, our health, our homes and of our relationships. Whilst the island is covered in Christmas trees and lit up with fairy lights, some couples may decide that it’s time for a new beginning as the New Year approaches.

Family Law isn’t just about divorce papers and courtroom conflicts. It’s about helping parties to navigate change – sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes liberating – with compassion and clarity. As the year wraps up, people may reflect on what’s working for them and what’s not. For some that means having difficult conversations about separation, parenting or finances.

Family Law is about providing advice and support for separating couples to guide them as to how best to reach an agreement by minimising animosity and expense. There are many non-court dispute resolution options out there that can help couples find common ground without the bitterness of a Court battle. Parenting agreements can provide stability for children when everything else feels uncertain. Pre-nuptial agreements, which are understandably viewed by many as unromantic, can set clear expectations as to the division of finances in the event of divorce (although the hope and intention is a pre-nuptial agreement is never needed).

So, as the new year begins, if you find yourself in the position where you need legal advice and guidance on a relationship breakdown, just have in mind that it doesn’t have to mean conflict and bitterness. It doesn’t have to mean a contested, costly Court hearing. It is possible to start a new chapter by having a “good divorce” which minimises conflict and emotional damage, enabling both parties to build a positive future.

A POCKET GUIDE TO AVOIDING COURT IN FAMILY LAW DISPUTES

Words: Alexandra Cohen, Advocate at Cohen Family Law.

Photography: Danny Evans

In Jersey since the early 2000’s the Family Court has encouraged disputes between couples to be resolved through what was called ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) now more appropriately called NCDR (Non-Court Dispute Resolution).

There are various ways to engage in NCDR and this article seeks to explain these options and why they all offer advantages to going down the traditional court centred route. Indeed, it is becoming more and more the case that NCDR is actively encouraged by the Family Court, and it may well become the case that some form of dispute resolution will become compulsory soon. It is therefore essential for separated couples to understand the options and that all of these methods of resolution can be used in resolving both financial and children disputes.

SETTLING OUTSIDE OF COURT - NCDR

There is a broadly accepted principle that it is better to settle a dispute outside of court. NCDR can save time and costs and of course the couple are able to choose the type of NCDR that they wish to engage in as well as the person they want to be the ‘judge’ in their dispute. This means that the couple can be satisfied that their chosen judge will have time to read all the papers, consider all the issues and give a considered indication on the issues at stake. It is undoubtedly true that settlement rates are higher and the whole process is far less stressful for all involved and of course the couple both ultimately come to the settlement by consent both having a say in the outcome.

WHAT IS ON OFFER IN JERSEY?

1.

There is of course the traditional mediation route where the couples do not have their lawyer present during the process. This route is offered, for example, by Family Mediation Jersey or by Family Foundation. Traditional mediation can be highly successful particularly in resolving issues such as contact matters or child maintenance issues. It may well, however, not be as effective in dealing with more complicated disputes where matters of law may be involved, and legal advice and guidance is essential. Couples also sometimes feel that the pure mediation process can be highly stressful because they do not have their lawyer present, and the mediator may not be legally qualified.

2.

An early use of NCDR in Jersey was (and remains) the possibility of private mediation using a qualified mediator who is legally qualified and where couples have their own lawyers present to guide them through the process. The mediator will guide and will structure the discussion and identify the key issues and explore possible solutions that are tailored to the particular situation. However, the couple retain control and make their own decisions and the agreement if reached, is recorded in a legally binding agreement that will be presented to the court as a draft consent order. In many cases lawyer led mediation can be highly effective.

3.

However, there are many cases where the separating couples not only need advice from their own lawyers in order to reach an agreement but need an indication from a ‘judge’. The ideal forum in such cases is what is called Private FDR for finances and Private DRA for children disputes. This is where the couple choose and agree on their ‘judge’ (often an experienced barrister from England) who will offer a neutral and unbiased outcome if the dispute were to be decided by a judge in the Family Court. In practice the private FDR/DRA leads to very productive negotiations and there is an extremely high success rate for this process. Time is saved and of course costs are minimised and perhaps more importantly the couple avoid all the stresses of appearing before the court. Again, the agreement will be recorded in a legal binding agreement and presented to the court as a draft consent order.

Finally, it is imperative the options for settling the dispute are considered at the outset of a case and appropriate legal advice is given on the options available. If this is done and encouraged by lawyers, then emotional strain can be minimised during an already stressful time together with a saving of both time and costs and the court is avoided.

Thinking about a new direction in your career?

From Wine to Wealth

After leaving school at 17 with no clear career direction, Jean-Luc began his journey at L’Horizon Hotel, overseeing the delivery of wine, food, and beverages.

What inspired you to move into Finance?

Drawn by the appeal of a five-day workweek and the chance to boost my earnings, I applied for a role at a trust company, organising archive boxes and establishing a filing system. I then progressed through training as an Assistant Trust Officer, learning double-entry bookkeeping and how to prepare annual accounts. After gaining several years of experience, I began studying for my professional qualifications and steadily advanced through the ranks—eventually being appointed director. And that brings us to today.

About Alex Picot Trust

As you learn more about your skills and strengths you might discover that your ideal path isn’t where you first expected. At Alex Picot Trust, many of our team members began their careers in other industries before finding their place in finance. Their experiences show that it’s never too late to make a change!

Before joining Alex Picot Trust, Zoe spent over eight years in childcare, most recently as a Teaching Assistant at a local preschool.

How did you decide it was the right time for a career switch?

When I moved back to Jersey from Australia, I had been thinking about a career change, and knew it was the right time to step out of my comfort zone. I thought finance was a great option as I wanted to try something completely different. I did a lot of research, and I am lucky to have friends who work in the trust industry who gave me a good understanding of what to expect, which helped me take the leap!

Alex Picot Trust is an independent Jersey based trust and company service provider managing structures and advising both local and international individuals and their families, with a personal service delivered by our familiar and friendly team.

From Checkout to Charts Alex de Rue Business Intelligence

Alex started his career in retail, progressing from shop assistant to till manager, but seeking greater challenges, he moved into finance as a data analyst.

What advice would you say to someone thinking about switching into finance?

From my experience, switching into finance was both challenging and rewarding and gave me a sense of purpose. Unlike jobs where you might feel like a cog in the machine, finance allows you to see the impact of your work and apply your skills meaningfully. Skills gained in previous roles will be invaluable! Each day brings opportunities to learn and grow, showing we all have the potential to go beyond routine tasks and truly shine.

What made you choose to work for Bedell Cristin?  I chose Bedell Cristin because of its reputation for having a great atmosphere and genuinely supportive people. Before joining, I’d heard it was a welcoming place and after a year here, I can confidently say that’s true and so much more. The work environment has been fantastic and easy to settle into, which mattered a lot since this is my first office role. Beyond the office culture, Bedell Cristin consistently provides high-profile, valuable, and complex work. This has given me the chance to sink my teeth into some really interesting work during my training contract.

What professional training have you done?  I’ve completed a wide range of Business Development and Knowledge training. Most notably, I’ve begun preparing for SQE 1, which covers the theoretical foundations of English and Welsh law, along with professional conduct and ethics. Alongside formal training, there’s a strong culture of informal learning. In Litigation, we run weekly ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions to explore different aspects of the law. Bedell Cristin also hosts insightful firm-wide talks, one recent highlight was an engaging session on divorce law.

What do you do on an average day?

The role at Bedell Cristin is incredibly varied, you can never be quite sure what each week will bring, or even each hour at times, especially in Litigation! This unpredictability keeps the work exciting and ensures you’re constantly learning. One day you might be drafting complex legal documents, the next you’re assisting on a high-profile matter or diving into research for a challenging case. It’s a dynamic environment that rewards adaptability and curiosity, and it’s one of the things I enjoy most about working here.

What is your next step?

My immediate goal is to successfully pass SQE 1 and then, hopefully, SQE 2 to progress toward qualification as I rotate round the core practice areas to build my qualifying work experience. Bedell Cristin has been incredibly supportive, providing a comprehensive exam preparation course and access to an extensive network of current and former trainees who have already navigated the process.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

I’d strongly recommend exploring placement opportunities while at university. In my third year, I was fortunate to gain some excellent work experience, which proved invaluable. Looking back, I could have made even more of the wide range of opportunities available to students in Jersey. There’s a real wealth of options that can help you build practical skills and connections early on.

Isabella Birtwistle

Audit Associate, EY Jersey

What made you choose to work for EY?

I joined EY as part of their Summer Internship Programme in 2023 after my second year of university and was instantly impressed by the atmosphere; it was nowhere near as scary as I thought it would be. I then applied for their Graduate Trainee Programme after two more years at university. Throughout the interview process EY stood out to me as caring about who I was as a person, rather than just a number in the business.

What professional training are you studying towards?

So far, I have sat the first two of what will eventually be fourteen ICAEW ACA exams, with the third coming up before Christmas. Each exam in the first year involves roughly a week out of work in college where we are taught the content for an exam which we then sit about two weeks later. I’ve found that this has helped ease the transition to full-time work as it feels a bit like being back at university.

What do you do on an average day?

After parking slightly outside of town and walking into work with two of my fellow associates, I get a cup of tea and get ready to start my day just before 9am at EY’s offices. I check my emails first and then contact the senior on my team to discuss the day’s tasks. I have lunch with the rest of my graduate cohort and catch up on how their days are going, and if it’s nice weather we occasionally grab a drink together after work too.

What is your next step?

Currently, my focus is on passing my exams and continuing to settle into life at EY and learn more about my work, and how this supports our clients. I’m due to finish the exams in November 2027, and after that I would consider a short secondment with EY to another country, as I have only ever lived in Jersey and Durham.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Apart from “apply to EY Jersey”, I would say the biggest thing would be to say “yes” to things and to put yourself out there, especially if you’re unsure about your career path. Go to the student networking events, apply for a range of jobs as you never know what might come from it. EY is hosting a drop in Christmas event at Nomu on Wednesday, 17 December from 5pm for any students who would like to find out more about the career opportunities EY offers.

Trainee Administrator, Fiduchi

What made you choose to work for Fiduchi?

Fiduchi offers a rotational trainee programme that lets me gain experience across the different departments within the business, which was a good option for me when starting out in the Finance industry.

What professional training have you done, or are you doing?

Alongside my role, I’m studying for the Level 4 International Financial Administration qualification of the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland supported by Fiduchi and delivered with Chapter One, which is giving me a strong foundation in financial services.

What do you do on an average day?

My current seat of the rotation programme is in the Marine Services team, where every day is different. I draft corporate documents such as minutes, Powers of Attorney, Letters of Authority, assist with Maritime Crew payroll and payment processes, and I help ensure company documentation, like insurance policies, stays up to date and compliant. I love the variety and the chance to learn something new every day.

What is your next step?

To complete my qualifications and move into a permanent Administrator role, expanding my knowledge and experience in the financial sector.

Age: 19

Education/Further Education: I completed A Levels in Geography, Finance, and Psychology, which developed my analytical and critical thinking skills. What did you want to be when you were 8 years old?

A marine biologist, inspired by my love of the ocean and summers spent surfing, which sparked my interest in marine conservation.

Favourite way to relax:

Having a pamper day - a hot bath, pyjamas, and a cup of tea.

Favourite place to eat in Jersey: El Gato Gordo - I love tapas and sharing food with friends.

Favourite possession:

My childhood soft toy bunny and my cat called Wally - both bring me comfort and happiness.

Adrianne Clyde-Smith

Trainee Risk and Compliance Assistant, Fiduchi

What made you choose to work for Fiduchi?

I was introduced to the company through Prosper, a local recruitment agency who work in partnership with Fiduchi. During the interviews, I quickly noticed the strong social environment and positive work ethic, which really appealed to me. Since joining over seven months ago, everyone has been so welcoming and supportive, encouraging me to keep growing my career in finance.

Supported by Fiduchi, I’ve completed the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Certificate with the International Compliance Association (ICA) and will soon begin a Specialist Certificate in Corporate Governance, with plans to progress to higher-level qualifications.

What do you do on an average day?

No two days are the same. I might review newly onboarded clients, audit statutory documents, help with projects, or assist the Board and my team with various tasks.

What is your next step?

To continue developing my skills in Risk and Compliance, with the goal of one day becoming a Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO).

Age: 19

Education/Further Education: I studied Art at Highlands College and completed the UAL Art and Design Extended Diploma (Level 3). Wanting to broaden my skills, I decided to pursue a career in finance. What did you want to be when you were 8 years old?

Favourite place to eat in Jersey: Coco Rico.

Chloe Macdonald

Marketing Executive, JE

What made you choose to work for JE?

Growing up in Jersey, I heard a lot about JE. From seeing their roadworks sites and solar projects, I always knew JE got involved in really cool projects that affect Island life. So, when the opportunity came up for a Trainee Marketing Assistant, I had to go for it. I knew it would be a chance to work on diverse initiatives, apply my degree and grow my skills in a dynamic environment that truly makes a difference.

What professional training have you done?

After my degree, I was really looking to gain hands on experience and I’m lucky to have had that at JE. My role involves a lot of hands-on learning, which has been incredibly valuable. I’ve received training on our content management system (CMS), and I use analytics platforms like Sprout Social and Looker Studio to track website and social media performance. I’ve also developed creative skills using tools like E-marketer, Canva and Adobe editing software. It’s been a great mix of technical and creative development.

What do you do on an average day?

Every day in my role is different, and I really value that variety. A typical day starts with checking emails and messages to stay on top of communications. Then I dive into current projects, reviewing spreadsheets, collaborating with creative teams, refining content and attending meetings with internal stakeholders. Right now, we’re gearing up for some exciting campaigns for the new year, which means I’m often out on location for photoshoots or sourcing materials. It’s fast-paced, varied and incredibly rewarding.

What is your next step?

I have really enjoyed the projects and jobs that I have been involved in at JE. My experience has helped me discover which areas of marketing I’m most passionate about. I’ve found a real interest in data and analytics, understanding customer behaviour and using insights to shape strategy is something I find really exciting. Moving forward, I want to continue managing projects end-to-end and deepen my expertise in digital marketing and customer communications. It’s all about making an impact through meaningful engagement.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Since starting at JE, I’ve learned so much about marketing, about myself and about working in a professional environment. If I could give my graduate self some advice, it would be ask questions, get involved with as many projects as possible and be curious. Don’t hesitate to speak up or share your ideas. You’re surrounded by experienced, passionate professionals, learn from them, collaborate with them and never underestimate the value of your perspective. Every project is a chance to grow, so embrace it fully.

Megan Kane

Audit Assistant, KPMG in the Crown Dependencies

What made you choose to work for KPMG?

My grandfather started his accounting career at KPMG back when it was still Peat Marwick. It feels quite special to be working at the same firm where his career began. Beyond the personal connection, KPMG has a brilliant setup for trainees. I could tell that the company genuinely values the growth of its students and is committed to helping us succeed, as they have a super flexible environment for studying. The support, training and opportunities to grow professionally were exactly what I was looking for and has made balancing work and exams much more manageable.

What professional training have you done?

I am currently doing my accounting exams and have taken part in various training opportunities offered by KPMG such as our Private Equity breakfast initiative designed for our Private Equity (PE) audit teams to share knowledge, tools and best practices that support our PE engagements.

What do you do on an average day?

On a typical day, I will wake up early and begin the day with an early CrossFit session which helps me to feel focused for the rest of the day. My current role involves supporting the audit team with a variety of tasks such as, preparing for client calls, reviewing client documentation and performing audit testing.

What is your next step?

My next step is to pass my Performance Management and Audit and Assurance exams in the December sitting.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

I would reassure myself that coming from a creative background provides a different perspective on things and it should not be considered a disadvantage or make you feel inferior.

Ogier, Trainee Solicitor

What made you choose to work for Ogier?

I wanted a firm that combined high quality, complex work with a trainee intake small enough to allow early responsibility. Ogier struck that balance perfectly. The culture here is genuinely welcoming and supportive, which came through clearly during the interview process. I wanted to join a place where I’d be trusted to work in my own way, provided I deliver excellent results.

What professional training have you done?

I’ve completed the Professional Skills Course, which covers everything from advocacy and client care to financial and business skills. My electives were in Company Structures, Trusts, Corporate Insolvency and Negotiation. I’ve also taken the Loan Market Association’s Understanding the Loan Market course, and next week I’ll be joining the Jersey Funds Association’s Regulatory Masterclass. There’s no shortage of opportunities to keep learning here.

What do you do on an average day?

No two days are the same. Most of my time is spent reviewing and drafting transaction documents, researching complex legal points, and liaising with clients and other lawyers. I often join calls to progress deals and ensure matters stay on track. I’ve also helped prepare due diligence checklists, draft corporate resolutions and attend client meetings. As a trainee, I still take on a fair share of ad hoc tasks, from administrative support to serving summons.

What is your next step?

I’ll qualify as a solicitor in September 2026, so my focus now is on gaining as much exposure as possible across different practice areas. I’ve completed my Corporate and Dispute Resolution seats and am currently in Investment Funds, with Banking and Finance still to come. I’ve enjoyed all of them so far, so choosing where to qualify will be a difficult decision — though a very good problem to have.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate, considering the experience you have now?

Stay curious. Don’t just learn how something is done, try to understand why. Focus on progress rather than perfection and keep perspective by thinking about what’s realistically likely to happen, not just the extremes. Break difficult tasks into smaller steps, learn from every outcome and finish each day having learned at least one new thing. Finally, travel more, even if it’s just to a different part of your city. Free time only gets scarcer, so make the most of it while you can.

What made you choose to work for PwC?

I have always been a driven individual. I wanted to work for a large global business that would open up many pathways for me around the world. PwC is a highly respected brand and organisation, which I felt would give me the best opportunity to achieve my career goals and experience working with a wide range of people and clients. Everything I’d heard about PwC was positive, and I wanted to work at an organisation that I’d feel proud to be a part of.

What professional training have you done?

I am studying towards my ACCA accountancy qualification and have firsttime passes for all my exams. I am currently waiting on exam results; fingers crossed, I’ll only have one more exam (out of 13 overall) left to sit in June!

What do you do on an average day?

I start my day by reviewing my to-do list and emails, then catch up with our teams in India and South Africa, who help us review supporting documents, update spreadsheets and send bank confirmations. I work mostly on Jersey trust and fiduciary clients, so in between team catch-ups and client progress meetings, I validate the figures on a client's financial statements using evidence from supporting documents. The work varies depending on where we are in the audit cycle. I also take time during my day to check in with the junior team members and provide coaching when needed – I find the mentoring part of my role rewarding.

What is your next step?

My focus is really on completing my exams in the next six months. After that, I’m going to use the next year to figure out whether I want to stay in audit or explore a different work area, perhaps by moving within the PwC global network, to experience living abroad and expand my career horizons internationally!

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Don’t worry if you join after university and your degree isn’t finance related. It doesn’t put you at a disadvantage at all; most people start with little to no experience of accounting. My degree in Anthropology actually helps me relate to people and create strong relationships with colleagues, which is vital in a global business like PwC.

Indigo Pike

ESG Senior Manager, Saltgate Services Limited

What made you choose to work for Saltgate?

As a value led professional the eagerness, commitment and interest of Saltgate towards sustainability in all its forms and evolving applications stood out to me. It felt like an organisation and group of professionals I could partner with to make an impact as well as learn from. The flexibility and part time hours were also a meaningful draw.

What professional training have you done? My degree highlighted how my personal passions around community and environmentalism could translate into my professional work. I self-funded a University of Cambridge course in Business Sustainability Management, which was not only an enriching course but also introduced me to an incredible network of sustainability professionals around the world. The network and the insights from the course continue to shape my approach and deepen my impact.

What do you do on an average day?

My role is joyfully varied, and I love that it allows for current projects, such as implementing carbon offsetting necessary company travel, as well as looking forward. I have a continuous eye on our strategy, making sure we are not only on track but projecting towards a more sustainable and regenerative future.

What is your next step? I am currently loving the balance that my work offers, helping shape ESG strategy and action at Saltgate alongside teaching yoga (The Olive Tree Studio). But I am also a firm believer in continuing to evolve and in both regards this looks like how impact can grow in depth and breadth. At Saltgate, this means deepening our net zero commitments and embedding sustainability into every layer of our operations.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

Continue to invest in what excites and inspires you. The best work will come from where you are continuously asking questions, thinking of new innovations and can see meaningful impact. You don’t have to fit a preordained timeline; your career is more than what pays the bills so keep being curious and challenging yourself.

Liv Mehigan

Marketing & Business Development Administrator, Fairway

What made you choose to work for Fairway?

Before joining Fairway, I spent a year working in Human Resources, which gave me valuable experience in the financial sector. However, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in Marketing. After exploring a few junior marketing roles, Fairway stood out to me - the responsibilities of the role aligned perfectly with my interests and skills. What really attracted me was Fairway’s commitment to staff development and career progression, which is something I deeply value. Another key factor was the collaborative culture the company promotes. Since joining over two years ago, I’ve seen this first-hand - collaboration is not only encouraged but embedded in the way we work, helping me build strong relationships across the business.

What professional training have you done?

Last year, I studied for my CIM Level 4 Certificate in Professional Digital Marketing and achieved a distinction in January 2025.

What do you do on an average day?

No two days are ever quite the same in my role, which is one of the things I love most about it! I usually start my Mondays by reviewing my ongoing projects and pulling together a weekly checklist. This helps me align my calendar with key priorities and stay on top of upcoming deadlines.

My responsibilities span a wide range of marketing and business development activities, including employer brand development, planning and organising events (both internal and external), and creating content for our website and social media channels. I’m also the main coordinator for our events, sponsorships, CSR, and corporate hospitality programmes - managing all the logistics involved. Alongside this, I contribute to general daily admin tasks to keep everything running smoothly.

What is your next step?

With Fairway’s global presence continuing to grow, I’m keen to take on more responsibility across our international jurisdictions. I’d love to build stronger relationships with colleagues overseas and gain more exposure to business development opportunities in those regions.

I also plan to keep making the most of the growth opportunities Fairway offers, including the monthly Promise Programme sessions, which have been instrumental in supporting both my personal and professional development. I’m also looking forward to pursuing further professional qualifications with Fairway’s support.

What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?

No work experience is ever wasted. If you’re unsure about what you want to do or which sector to go into, don’t worry - every experience helps you build transferable skills that will benefit you in whichever path you choose.

What did you want to be when you were 8 years old? A marine biologist - I thought it meant I’d get to swim in the sea and work with dolphins every day!

Favourite way to relax: One of my favourite ways to unwind is by going for a long walk while listening to a podcast or some music. I’ve always enjoyed going to the gym, and recently I’ve started incorporating Pilates into my routine. I find it a more engaging and relaxing form of exercise, especially after a busy day at work.

OCEAN CALL OF THE

This Jersey family of four is far from your average nuclear family. After setting sail from the island on their floating home, PINNACLE, two years ago, Rich, Stef, Jesse (4) and Roux (2) have lived a life of beauty and chaos. From tranquil, simple moments - morning coffees on deck, the kids jumping straight into the water, exploring remote islands and landing spots of natural beauty - to the more chaotic interruptions, like dodging orcas along the coasts of Spain and Portugal, we caught up with Stef to hear about everything they’ve experienced since setting sail for a life at sea

What made you decide to leave Jersey to sail around the world? We set sail from Jersey on PINNACLE (Nautitech 46' openCatamaran) about two years ago. Rich grew up sailing from day dot, it’s always been in his blood, and for me, the sea has always been a big part of my life. Through our business, we were lucky to have the flexibility to work the winters (off-season) from anywhere and we began chartering boats: Grenadines, BVI's and Australia. It was incredible. We saw families out there doing it and the moment Rich voiced the idea for ourselves, we both knew we’d regret it if we didn’t go for it.

Our “why” runs deep. Rich lost both his parents at a young age and that loss taught us both that life is for living, for making the most of the days you’re given, not wondering “what if.” We’d also spent five long years struggling with infertility and both of our boys are IVF miracles. Once they were in our lives, we wanted to spend as much time with them as possible, cherish their childhoods, take them on adventures and share as much of the world with them.

The moment Jesse was born, I realised I couldn’t put as much of myself into our business anymore, my priorities had shifted. Rich agreed: there’s never a perfect time to make a big change like this, but sometimes you just have to take the leap. We officially set sail from Jersey in July 2023, with Jesse, then two years old, and Roux, just four months (both in nappies!), and began this incredible new chapter together aboard Pinnacle.

What kind of planning or preparation did it take to make that dream a reality?

It went from a five-year plan to a two-year plan very quickly! We actually found Pinnacle in Southampton. Rich went to the boat show in September 2021 just to get the ball rolling and see what was out there, but before he even went, he spotted a private listing for this boat. Pinnacle was the first catamaran he stepped foot on and he instantly had a feeling she could be the one. At the time, Jesse was only three months old. Rich called me and

said we needed to go back together to see her. Two weeks later, we were on a flight with my mum and Jesse, took her out for a test sail and two hours later found ourselves in a pub deciding we had to put an offer in before someone else did! It became very real very quick!

We officially sailed Pinnacle across the Channel to Jersey in April 2022, which was a huge milestone. From there, it was all systems go, preparing to sell our business, renting out our home, going through IVF to see if we could have another crew mate to join us and pouring our time, money and energy into getting the boat ready for full-time life aboard.Rich spent months working through the systems, electrics, and repairs, while I focused on the family side of things: safety, provisioning and figuring out how to create a sense of home and routine for the boys (all while having baby Roux in March 2023!)

We completed training courses, including offshore survival, we practiced sailing in rougher conditions to build our confidence as a team. But honestly, there’s only so much you can prepare for, the rest you learn along the way. We’ve become experts in problem-solving, improvising and leaning on the incredible support network that exists within the cruising community. By the time we set sail in July 2023, we were still figuring out how to parent two little ones. The boat was shipshape, we were exhausted, but we were ready (except the weather wasn't on our side!)

What’s everyday life like on board, and how is bringing up a family at sea?

It’s a mix of magic and mayhem! Life on board is beautifully simple in many ways: mornings with coffee on deck, the boys jumping straight into the water and days that revolve around the wind, weather and wherever we drop anchor. But it’s also intense. Boat jobs and kids never stop, something always needs fixing, maintaining, or cleaning, and you have to constantly think about safety, power, water and weather.

Some trip highlights... leaving Jersey, sailing through Europe, crossing the Atlantic, first steps in the Caribbean, enjoying life on anchor, crossing the Pacific, crossing the equator, enjoying Galapagos, French Polynesia, marquases Tiki life, Tuamotus coconut life & empty surf. The family are now in Moorea.

For us, the biggest shift has been learning to balance it all: being parents, partners and crew. There are moments where the pressure is high, like when we’re sailing through squalls or trying to fix something crucial (in boat yoga positions) while keeping the kids safe and happy. But then there are moments that take your breath away: dolphins at the bow, the kids stroking stingrays in the water, surfing perfect empty waves, stargazing from the trampoline, 360 degree amazing views, the world on your doorstep. Those are the moments that remind us exactly why we chose this life.

The boys have adapted so naturally. They’re curious, confident and so in tune with the sea and nature. Every day is a mix of adventure and learning. We love seeing the world through their eyes and hearing Jesse ask so many questions as he comprehends the places we've been and things he's seen. Roux has learnt to eat, crawl, walk across oceans, whilst Jesse has potty trained, learnt to talk, swim & surf around the world. Pretty epic to share these moments together 24/7.

Have you had any particularly rough or scary moments along the way?

Definitely. You can prepare all you want, but real-life experience at sea will always test you. We’ve had our share of squalls, equipment failures and sleepless nights. There’s a certain type of fear that comes with being responsible for your family’s safety miles from land, but it’s also what sharpens your instincts and brings you closer as a team.

We dodged Orcas along the coast of Spain and Portugal, had our sail ripped in two on a fast night sail to Madeira, and were boarded in Venezuelan waters by an armed military. One night during a heavy squall in the Marquesas Islands we had a dragging anchor, with rocks close by and our steering cable snapped at the same time. Jesse once had a high fever for days whilst we were crossing the Pacific ocean.

We’ve learned to stay calm, think logically and support each other in those moments. We’ve come to realise that fear doesn’t go away, you just get better at managing it. Each challenge teaches you something new, and it’s made us stronger and more capable

Do you have a favourite place you’ve visited so far, or somewhere that really surprised you?

It’s so hard to pick one! We have seen so many incredible places and experienced so much culture in each of them. To name a few: Madeira, Bonaire, Los Rocques, Guna Yala region Panama, Galapagos, Tuamotus... we’re currently in Moorea and wow, it's incredible.

A particularly special moment was watching Roux take his first steps on Barbuda’s white sand beaches. Others include the sight of Fatu Hiva after crossing the Pacific, and the locals giving us more fruit than we could carry each time we went ashore. Swimming with humpback whales was up there, as was watching the empty, perfect waves in the Tuamotus (and the coconut life!)

We dodged Orcas along the coast of Spain and Portugal, had our sail ripped in two on a fast night sail to Madeira, and were boarded in Venezuelan waters by an armed military.

Who are some of the people you’ve met that have made the journey extra special?

The people we’ve met have honestly been one of the best parts of this life. There’s such a strong sense of community among sailors, everyone looks out for each other, shares advice, helps fix things, or just shows up with a coffee (or a beer!) when you need it. Watching Jesse & Roux interact with other children of all different ages, nationalities, cultures and walks of life has been so special and something I think will shape them in life. They may not be able to talk to each other, but there is always the communication of play.

We’ve met families like ours who’ve become lifelong friends, locals who’ve welcomed us into their communities and other cruisers who’ve inspired us with their stories. There’s a shared understanding among people living this way, that we’re all chasing time, connection, and simplicity. The world definitely has fewer strangers in it now, and we have 'homes' to visit in so many places!

How has this experience changed you, as individuals, and as a family? We’ve learned to live with less and appreciate more, to fix what we have instead of replacing it, to make do and to find solutions together. It has grounded us. Life aboard and seeing the world constantly reminds us what really matters. We’re more adaptable. The kids have taught us to slow down and find joy in small things, and the sea has taught us patience, humility and respect. It's exhausting, but each day we feel like we are learning and truly living.

If you could give a piece of advice to yourselves two years ago, before you set off, what would it be?

Slow down! Sailing with young kids is tough and it's important to take time and rest and enjoy the places. We made the decision to slow down after crossing the Atlantic; it has definitely been the right decision for us. Life at sea isn’t always easy, don't have expectations or put pressure for everyday to be incredible. Embrace the good days and celebrate the tougher times: it’s all part of the journey.

The Shortcut to Sunshine

Let’s face it, nothing quite kills the holiday vibe like a 4 a.m. alarm, a dark drive, and a Gatwick security queue that feels longer than the flight to Spain. Starting and finishing your holiday with all that stress means you’ll come back feeling like you need another break! But thanks to Fly Direct, islanders can swap stress for sangria and start their holidays the moment they check in at Jersey Airport.

For Summer 2026, Fly Direct is back, and better than ever, with a sun-soaked schedule that makes escaping the island blissfully easy. From April to October, you can hop on weekly direct flights to four of Europe’s favourite hotspots: Majorca, Ibiza, The Algarve, and the Costa del Sol. Whether you’re chasing beachside bliss, boho markets, that perfect plate of grilled fish, or a family holiday your kids will actually enjoy, these routes are your ticket to sure-fire holiday success.

Each destination offers its own slice of paradise. In Majorca, lose yourself in the honey-stone streets of Palma’s old town, explore hidden turquoise coves around Cala d’Or, or linger over tapas as the sun dips behind the Tramuntana mountains. Over in Ibiza, there’s a different rhythm entirely, think lazy lunches in Santa Gertrudis, boutique shopping in Dalt Vila, and those legendary Balearic sunsets at Café Mambo.

If rugged coastlines and golden beaches are more your thing, The Algarve delivers in spades. From the dramatic cliffs of Lagos to the cobbled charm of Tavira, it’s a region that mixes natural beauty with easy-going hospitality, not to mention golf courses, fresh seafood, and pastel de nata with your morning coffee. And then there’s the Costa del Sol, where beach bars buzz from Marbella to Nerja, the drinks flow freely, and every evening has that unmistakable Mediterranean warmth.

Let’s be honest, working out all the moving parts of a holiday can be so confusing you never quite get around to booking. Fly Direct takes all the hassle out of holidaying. Prices start from just £399 return for adults, and you can choose your own adventure, whether that’s a flight-only deal, a full package holiday, or even a one-way ticket (because who hasn’t dreamed of staying just a little longer?). Add to that a tempting lineup of hand-picked hotels, and you’ve got everything you need for a seamless summer getaway.

And let’s talk about comfort. Fly Direct operates on sleek BA CityFlyer jet aircraft, meaning roomy seats, friendly crews, and that oh-so-satisfying feeling of being looked after from take-off to touchdown.

The company has clearly been listening to island families too. New for 2026 are child discounts across all flights, even during the school holidays (what legends!), offering between £50 and £200 off per child. They’ve also extended their Algarve programme through October half-term, giving everyone one last chance of sunshine before winter sets in. And if you’re travelling with a crowd, perhaps a family reunion or a big birthday trip, there’s another brand-new perk: book nine seats and the tenth flies free.

But beyond the practicalities and perks, the real beauty of flying direct from Jersey is time; more of it, used better. No trudging through connecting airports, no overnight stopovers, no waiting for that second flight. Just a smooth, stress-free start and an easy journey home. It’s the kind of travel that makes holidays feel like holidays again.

Imagine it: brunch at El Tico, bags checked in by lunchtime, and cocktails by sunset. That’s the magic of Fly Direct. Less hassle, more holiday. More time for beach strolls, late dinners, and spontaneous adventures.

So whether you’re dreaming of Majorca’s turquoise coves, Ibiza’s golden sunsets, The Algarve’s surf-washed cliffs, or tapas in the Costa del Sol, make 2026 the summer you skip Gatwick and go straight to the good part.

Fly Direct from Jersey to joy.

BEYOND KISMET

If you’ve spent any time down at Ouaisné over the past decade, chances are you’ve tasted a little Kismet magic. Whether it was a beachside brunch roll after a dip, a rum punch slushie at sunset, or the unmistakable beat of live music drifting across the sand, Kismet Cabana became woven into the rhythm of westie Jersey life.

Now, after nine incredible years by the sea, the team behind the island’s most colourful catering crew has turned the page to an entirely new chapter. Meet The Pantry - by Kismet Cabana, the business’s freshly opened home at La Haule Farm, St Aubin. Housed in the former Lucas Brothers shop, The Pantry blends everything Kismet is loved for, flavour, creativity, and community, with a new mission: to make sustainable, chef-made local food accessible for every islander.

A kitchen built on connection “We wanted to create something that celebrates local food and makes it easy for busy people to eat well” says founder and chef Chris Lister, “the idea was simple - real food, made from scratch with local ingredients (wherever possible), ready for your home oven.”

Inside, The Pantry feels like a natural evolution of the brand: rustic shelves lined with small-batch sauces, chutneys and relishes from their Dollops & Dashes range, freezers

stocked with comforting Soul Food & Wanderlust dishes (think Woodlands Farm Cottage Pie, Sri Lankan Chicken Curry, and Pulled Brisket Mac & Cheese), and a bright corner bursting with produce from farms like Manor Farm, Three Oaks Vineries, Blanc Pignon, and Homefield. Sustainability, but make it soulful

The Pantry’s ethos goes far beyond flavour. Sustainability has always been part of the Kismet DNA, and this new venture brings that to life in every detail. Packaging is fully compostable or recyclable, with the team’s new Jersey Bean Pot scheme rewarding customers for returning glass jars and bottles. “It’s a simple idea - you bring back your jars, we reuse them, and the savings go into our community fund,” explains Summer. “It’s about circular thinking - reducing waste while giving something back.”That “something back” extends to their Pay It Forward scheme, designed to make wholesome, local food accessible to everyone. The goal? To provide subsidised meals and community hampers for those in need.

From Ouaisné to La Haule

The move has opened the door to collaboration. The Pantry now stocks products from other local makers, including Rawe Juices, Brooklands Farm, Jade Fisheries, and Blanc Pignon, creating a one-stop shop for island-made goodness.

So… what’s happening with Kismet Cabana?

The short answer - it’s still very much alive, just evolved. Kismet Cabana now focuses purely on private catering, weddings, and events - giving Chris and the team the space to dish up those signature Kismet flavours for special occasions across the island. From intimate dinner parties to large-scale celebrations, you can still expect the same sunshine-filled menus, music-infused atmosphere and that touch of Kismet flair - just brought directly to you.

What’s next for The Pantry?

With the shop now open, the focus turns to digital growth. Their new website, thepantry. je, will soon allow customers to order online for click-andcollect or island-wide delivery, with subscription meal plans launching in early 2026. “We’ve learned that good food isn’t just about what’s on your plate,” says Chris. “It’s about the people who grow it, the hands that make it, and the stories that bring it to life. That’s what we want The Pantry to represent.” Whether you’re popping in for your weeknight dinner, a jar of Jerk BBQ Sauce, or just to say hi, you’ll find that same Kismet warmth waiting at the door

#ThePantrybyKismet

Percy and Colin have arrived at Quennevais.

If you’ve driven through St Brelade recently, you’ll have noticed a buzz in the air (and a rather beautiful refurbed building to match). The wait is finally over, the brand-new Marks & Spencer St Brelade has officially opened its doors, and it’s everything we hoped for… and then some. Think gleaming aisles, two spacious floors, and the unmistakable scent of freshly baked bread wafting through the air.

This isn’t just another shop, it’s a whole new M&S experience. From the moment you step inside, you can feel the difference. It’s light, bright, and beautifully laid out,

Expect all your M&S Food favourites and more: a huge bright section of fruit and veg, hand-picked cuts of meat, the freshest fish, and shelves full of store-cupboard heroes that make midweek dinners a breeze. And of course, it wouldn’t be M&S without those accidental extras that somehow end up in your basket; Percy Pigs, Colin the Caterpillar, or that box of Extremely Chocolatey Biscuits you didn’t know you needed (until you saw them).

The in-store bakery is worth the trip alone. The smell of warm pastries, crusty sourdough, and buttery croissants is enough to stop anyone in their tracks. You can practically hear the whisper: “Go on, treat yourself.” And let’s be honest, who’s saying no to a warm cheese twist or a flaky almond croissant straight from the oven?

But M&S knows that modern life is busy, and convenience matters just as much as quality. The new Collect by Car service for food is a total game-changer. Picture this: you've done your shopping, then you simply swing by the store, and they bring it out to you. No lugging heavy bags, no soggy runs through the rain, just easy, breezy shopping. Ideal for when you’re juggling kids, errands, or, let’s face it, nursing one of those mysterious “over-40 injuries” that make carrying anything heavier than a handbag feel heroic.

And the convenience doesn’t stop there. Thanks to Click & Collect, you can now shop the M&S range online, from fashion to beauty, and simply pick up your order in-store when it suits you. Perfect for those who’ve been eyeing up M&S’s stylish new clothing collections (seriously, haven’t they been absolutely nailing it lately?).

Every detail of the new store has been thoughtfully designed, from the warm welcome as you step inside to the clever layout that makes browsing a pleasure. There’s an easy flow between the floors and that unmistakable M&S sense of calm, even when you’re doing the big shop. So whether you’re popping in for your favourite meal deal, stocking up for the week, or just fancy a freshly baked treat and a bit of inspiration, the new M&S St Brelade is ready to welcome you.

Fresh, friendly, and full of all the things we love, M&S St Brelade is your new go-to for good food, and everyday joy.

Why I’ll Never Go on a Diet Again
How I learned to eat intuitively and feel balanced in body and mind.

Words&Photography: Flo Balderson

Over the last two years, I have been making slow, meaningful changes to my diet which promote a lifestyle which isn’t wrapped around starting diets and then quitting them - bouncing between junk food and takeaways to brown rice paired with a piece of unseasoned fish. My face felt puffy, I always felt bloated and no matter how much exercise I did, something just felt off.

My husband started to research the whole world of ultra processed food. We soon realised that the majority of our ‘easy weeknight meals’ were mostly made up of inflammatory formulas and high levels of sugar, additives and salt. An example of this was the classic ‘stir in pot pasta’: we realised that the little pot of pasta sauce had little to no nutritional value.

We started to hear the mantra: if you can’t find it in your kitchen, you probably shouldn’t eat it. We would walk into supermarkets and feel like there really wasn’t a whole lot of actual food in there. It took time, a lot of planning but we were finally starting to eat meals which really were nourishing us.

Here are a few resources which helped me find some meal inspiration:

Emily English (@emthenutritionist) on Instagram: She creates easy weeknight meals which a full of protein and taste incredible.

Blue Zone documentary on Netflix: I know this has some controversy now but the base line for the nutrition is insightful and really quite beautiful.

Olive Magazine: This subscription really helped with getting excited about seasonal ingredients and cooking locally.

FINDING BALANCE

In my past, I have had a challenging relationship with food so it was important to me that this new-found knowledge did not become restrictive nor obsessive. To this day, I will still eat a processed chocolate bar or the odd chicken Kiev! The point of the exercise is to just inject some mindfulness into your choices and start to be aware of what is actually going into your body.

Cravings, for instance, can reveal hidden needs. A desire for something sweet might be your body asking for magnesium (dark chocolate is perfect for this) or even hydration, since mild dehydration can mimic sugar cravings. Craving meat can be an indication of low iron (particularly in woman). You can go further to see that cravings might even signal emotional needs, for example, craving salt can be linked to stress and the need for grounding and protection.

Cooking from scratch with whole food ingredients has become my new passion project which has escalated in ways I could have never imagined. Bagels were some of my earlier challenges - my initial batch was terrible - however over time I perfected the recipe. These experiments didn’t just stay personal. They led me to starting Helios Events and Catering, where I now create grazing platters, brunch boards, and bespoke menus that reflect the same mindfulness and joy I bring to my own kitchen.

The point in this for me, was to find joy in balance and healing. In my opinion, restriction will never work. We are human and have varying needs, wants and everything in between. It is important to lean into our intuition and find what works for our individual bodies.

The changes I have seen over the last two years have felt radical. My skin started to glow, I have more energy, I am happier and after a lifetime of discomfort, I am experiencing healthy digestion. I eat intuitively now, even syncing with my moon cycle and eating in balance with my phases of menstruation.

Heading into the colder Christmas months, I encourage you to be kind and considerate to yourself, your body and the earth. This can be a time to truly indulge but usually paired with a lot of guilt and then a sharp juxtaposition into ‘health January’. Maybe this year, instead of starting over, you just keep going - slower, softer, and more in tune with what you actually need.

To put these principles into practice, here’s a hearty leftover chicken noodle soup to ward off illness and keep your body nourished with a bowl of rich, golden healing goodness.

Golden Leftover Chicken Noodle Soup

Serves: 4–6 | Prep: 20 mins | Cook: 1.5–2 hrs (including stock)

INGREDIENTS

Ingredients For the Stock:

1 whole roast chicken carcass

½ onion, roughly chopped

2 bay leaves

5–6 black peppercorns

Water, enough to cover

For the Soup:

1 tbsp coconut oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 knob ginger, grated

1 tbsp miso paste

1 heaped tsp turmeric

1 tsp chilli flakes (more if you prefer it spicier)

300 ml chicken stock

1 tin coconut milk

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp fish sauce

1 tbsp white wine vinegar

1 heaped tsp brown sugar

Any green vegetables you have (mange tout, pak choi, or spinach)

Any noodles of your choice (rice or vermicelli work well)

Cooked chicken, shredded from your roast

Garnish: lime wedges, fresh coriander, spring onion

METHOD

Make the Stock:

Place the chicken carcass, onion, bay leaves, and peppercorns in a large pan. Cover with water and bring to a boil.

Reduce to a simmer and cook for at least 1.5 hours (the longer, the more flavorful).

Strain the stock into a jug and set aside.

Prepare the Soup Base:

Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat. Add garlic and ginger, cooking gently until aromatic.

Add turmeric and stir for 30 seconds.

Pour in the coconut milk and about 300 ml of the chicken stock. Simmer for 20 minutes.

Add Seasonings & Vegetables:

Stir in sauces and brown sugar.

Add your chosen greens and cook until just tender.

Finish the Soup:

Add noodles and shredded chicken. Simmer until the noodles are cooked.

Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, or extra soy sauce if needed.

Serve:

Ladle into bowls and garnish with lime, fresh coriander, and spring onion.

Optional: a drizzle of toasted sesame oil or a chilli oil for extra depth.

We tried all the Christmas sandwiches so you don’t have to.

Wondering whether to venture into a new Christmassy realm and leave your usual BLT behind when selecting your next meal deal? Well, wonder no more, myself and the Gallery office reprobates have taste tested every Christmas sandwich available to us in town.

After putting the word out on social media, a handful of local businesses reached out to us. Unfortunately for a lot of our local stores, their Christmas specials couldn’t be sampled until December. So we’ve scoured local supermarkets in town for the best that they have to offer. Next year, we/I will be more prepared and ensure we have some local independents in the mix.

For now, here’s our sandwich haul–if Santa’s sack was packed full of gluten and cranberry sauce, if you will.

Fa La La La Fel Wrap

M&S

£4.75 3.5/5

Controversially, starting with a wrap, not a sandwich. From head-to-toe, a solid falafel wrap by all accounts. Notably moist, a zingy flavour profile with a peppy spice on the tailend of a bite. Is it screaming Christmas? No. I guess we could be asking M&S, “Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?”. One point for a festive name, but a negative point for missing “Las” for correctness. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

Turkey & Homemade Stuffing

Morrisons

£3.59 1/5

I feel sorry for the turkeys that have ended up in these sandwiches. Wafer thin turkey cuts surrounded by lifeless bread and an abundance of leafage. An occasional bite was accompanied with a sharp crunch which I can only assume was turkey feet or worse. The less said about this sandwich the better. A firm place on the naughty list for whoever created this sandwich.

Pigs Under Blankets

Co-op

£3.65 4/5

A smoky meatfest. The honeyed sausages and crispy bacon elevate it into a hangover buster of a sandwich. ‘Pigs under blankets’ might indicate that the pigs are hiding. I can assure you that they are not. Full frontal hog assault on the taste palette is on offer but this lunchtime meal is crying out for some fruit to cut through the meaty noise.

Pulled Pork with Spiced Apple

Morrisons

£3.59 0/5

Boxing Day

£3.65 2/5

Coleslaw. Coleslaw is how this sandwich starts and ends with not much in between. If you like shaved carrots and cabbage covered in mayo then this is the one for you! But for me, I want Die Hard in sandwich form. This sandwich makes me want to Die Fast.

Turkey Feast Co-op

£4.40 4/5

Sleigh bells start ringing when you bite into this sandwich. Packed full of traditional Christmas flavours, the turkey, bacon and cranberry game is strong in this one. The bread holds up well as it’s carrying some serious baggage. Hard to fault particularly with a moist turkey component. We had one strong dissenter in the office, but I think that’s down to poor taste rather than the constitution of the sandwich itself.

Burnt bread and heavily processed. Tasteless pork with a horribly confused spiced apple to compliment it. If nothing else, this sandwich is consistent. Consistently disappointing from start to finish. Gallery’s Emma, even referring to it as “tastes like the last few puffs of a vape” - say no more. Turn your Christmassy gaze elsewhere.

Pigs in Blankets

M&S

£4.75 5/5

Saving the best to last. This sandwich has everything you’d expect in a Christmas sandwich. A main payload of sausage, bacon and stuffing paired with a fruity chutney balances the sandwich well. Despite the generous quantity of sauces, the bread remained bouncy and held its form. If this sandwich was presented to you on Boxing Day, you might question why you’re not having your Xmas leftovers, but I assure you, you wouldn’t be disappointed after sampling its meaty greatness.

Gluten Free Turkey Feast M&S

£4.75 3/5

I hold a particular disdain for gluten free foods. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the GF option from M&S. Good texture, great flavours with a fruity cranberry cutting through the meat. The bread flavour is pretty dire, but this is to be expected, it’s gluten free after all. Eating around the crusts improves the experience. A good showing overall, particularly as we did not find any other GF options around town.

Brie and Cranberry M&S

£4.50 3.5/5

One of the few vegetarian options in our selection. When it comes to looks, this sandwich is a bit of a pauper by comparison to its competition. The slimline version of a Christmas Sandwich. But with refreshingly simple ingredients and a strong cheesy flavour, this sarnie won’t disappoint. Accompanied by a generous dollop of cranberry sauce, you can’t go wrong with it.

Christmas Club M&S

£5.50 4/5

As the most expensive sandwich in our selection, my expectations were high. A double decker sandwich and a distinct lack of floppiness despite the cargo it’s carrying, an impressive feat of engineering. Sandwich physics aside, it has a festive flavour but does lean into being slightly too sweet. Controversially, I’m a fan of chicken in a Christmas sandwich. Who really likes turkey anyway?

Honourable mentions that we didn’t get to taste, but you definitely should:

Flour Christmas Meal Wrap: I was gutted to not have gotten the chance to review this. But I will be trotting down on Dec 1st when this is first available.

Dandy Christmas special sandwich: A mystery for now, but with Dandy’s fine form in the sandwich department, this will not be one to miss.

Waitrose Christmas sandwiches: Known for a solid selection in this department, but my pork-filled legs wouldn’t take me all the way out of town to try their carby creations.

they had us aT ‘massive slices’.

The cafe at Le Quesne’s Garden Centre is both a peaceful hideaway and a popular social hub for those who like to enjoy their coffee with a healthy dose of good conversation and baked goods. Set amid the garden centre’s fresh, fragrant blooms and shrubs, the cafe offers a cosy spot to relax after a leisurely stroll through aisles filled with the perfect gift selection.

We sampled a spread of their homemade bakes, beginning with the Bakewell tart, which delivered a lovely almond flavour and a satisfying old-school charm. The carrot cake was a clear winner with its moist, bouncy bake and generous layer of cream cheese icing. Toby, our office carrot cake enthusiast, was more than satisfied.

The banoffee pie was delicious too, with the perfect toffee to banana ratio and a biscuit foundation that stood firm against the dreaded soggy base syndrome. The millionaires shortbread didn’t last long enough for a group consensus, as Ben devoured it before anyone else had a chance to comment (a strong endorsement).

A special mention goes to the cafe’s gluten-free brownie, which proves popular with everyone, regardless of dietary requirements. Pair it all with a well-made coffee, which earned an extra few points in our books for being enjoyed in such a serene setting, and you’ve got yourself the perfect afternoon treat setup.

Le Quesne’s Garden Centre La, Rue de Beauvoir. Garden Centre open 8am till 5pm Mon to Sat Cafe open from 9am till 4.30pm.

Ready-to-Pour Indulgence

Luxe Hot Chocolate with Jersey Dairy

As autumn drifts gently into winter, the days shorten, the air sharpens, and comfort becomes a daily craving. This is the season for scarves, rosy cheeks, and steaming mugs of something delicious. Enter Jersey Dairy’s Luxury Chocolate Milk, your shortcut to hot chocolate that turns even the greyest afternoon into a moment of bliss.

This isn’t your average cocoa mix. It’s a ready-to-pour indulgence crafted with premium Belgian chocolate and the famously rich, creamy Jersey milk from our pedigree Jersey cows. The result? A drink that feels both nostalgic and grown-up, comforting yet utterly sophisticated. It’s the kind of treat that reminds you why simple pleasures are often the best.

This season, it’s all about reclaiming hot chocolate as more than a childhood memory. It’s the grown-up indulgence we didn’t know we needed. Imagine wrapping up for a crisp winter walk with friends, after the stroll you find the perfect spot with a view, and out comes a thermos of steaming Jersey hot chocolate. A recipe for a wonderful moment for a proper catch up chat.

It’s these little rituals that make winter special: a flask shared after a long coastal stroll, a comforting mug by the fire while Christmas lights twinkle outside, or even a decadent base for an evening cocktail when guests come over. Jersey Dairy’s Luxury Chocolate Milk transforms to suit every mood, from wholesome to festive, from fireside to flask.

What sets it apart is that unmistakable Jersey milk richness. Decades of dairy heritage and the island’s lush pastures create milk that’s naturally creamier, giving the chocolate an unparalleled smoothness. Add to that the deep, balanced flavour of Belgian chocolate, and you’ve got a drink that manages to be both indulgent and effortlessly refined.

Forget fiddling with powders, syrups, or whisking lumps out of cocoa. With Jersey Dairy’s Luxury Chocolate Milk, all you need to do is heat, pour, and savour. In minutes, you’ve got a silky, velvety cup that rivals anything served behind a café counter. Top it with Jersey whipped cream, marshmallows to delight little ones, a sprinkle of chocolate shavings, or even a dash of Jersey sea salt to elevate it further.

In a world that moves too fast, there’s something wonderful about slowing down and simply enjoying a good hot chocolate, especially one that’s this easy. Jersey Dairy’s Luxury Chocolate Milk is proof that convenience doesn’t have to compromise on quality.

So, this winter, skip the fuss, grab a carton, and pour yourself a little luxury. Delicious. CHEERS.

THE PANTRY - BY KISMET CABANA

STRIKING A CHORD.

It’s been just over 2 months since Red House Yamaha Music School opened its doors, and illuminated its bold beacon of a window sign. Since then, over 200 students have flocked through the doors eager to embrace the Red House & Yamaha way of learning music.

With four floors of musical magic, and a max capacity of 800 students, Red House Yamaha Music School has the potential to flourish as Jersey’s musical community & education hub. That’s precisely what Charlie Northedge, Paul Sharkey, and Emily Hare are hoping for. Sitting down over a delicious Red House coffee with a towering wall of electric guitars as the backdrop, the talented trio divulge into the story behind the music school, Jersey’s music community, and aspirations for the future.

The story begins with Island Music owner, Paul Sharkey. Having been reached out to by Yamaha with the prospect of establishing an official Yamaha Music School on the island, Paul immediately ‘hunted down’ Charlie, poaching him as the perfect man for the job. Having always been ‘fascinated with music retail’, just over 3 years ago Paul plunged into his dream job of taking on Island Music. Since then, he’s found himself as an integral facet of Jersey’s music community. Hence when the opportunity to collaborate with Charlie arose, it was just the ‘right thing’ at the right time.

Having originally run Chordz Music School & Coffee House for many years before eventually selling it to a Guernseyowned company, Charlie humbly admits that he ‘instantly missed it.’ ‘So we’re doing it all over again—bigger and better than ever.’ After all, ‘a bit of competition is a good thing, isn’t it?’ With classes ranging from drums and guitar to ukulele and DJing, there’s something inherently refreshing about the spin Charlie is bringing to the new school. The school currently boasts 10 teachers, with more set to join in 2026, including Red House manager and locally adored singer-songwriter Emily Hare (also known as Emily Faye). Emily proudly details the ‘guarded’ methods that Yamaha use when it comes to appropriately training their accredited tutors: ‘each teacher has to fly over to the UK to complete a course. Twice. For three days at a time’.

Whilst Yamaha’s training methods for teachers appear sculpted and rigorous, their learning style for students is very much the opposite. ‘It’s very much learning by ear first. So the last thing your child does is look at a book’. It speaks volumes when the teacher you are being taught by can say: ‘it’s actually the way I would have loved to have learned music as a kid too’. The rigid penciled-in boxes that dominate academic curricula, can feel stressful and inaccessible, particularly to creative children. Therefore, when Charlie exclaims with modest pride ‘we want it to be a fun environment, we want to nurture creativity, and enjoyment’, an immense sense of optimism is restored. ‘They should be skipping through the door’: ‘And most of the children are, they’re all buzzing’.

Not only is there a focus on accessibility in regards to interactive learning, but also in the way of sharing the financial load. It’s no secret that playing an instrument, or engaging in the creative arts more broadly, can become a costly hobby. For new parents, it may not be the first activity that comes to mind when encouraging children to participate in after-school programs.

However, this is precisely where Charlie and Paul are working to change the narrative. ‘Every student that signs up gets access to Yamaha’s education fund, so that they can get discounts on Yamaha instruments’. Financial relief through Red House Yamaha Music School and Island Music, comes in the way of 10% discounts on Yamaha instruments, payment plans, and free taster sessions. The goal is to make music education as accessible as possible to as many people as possible.

In addition to Paul Sharkey’s pivotal role in bringing the ‘first music school of its kind’ to the Channel Islands, he has also been establishing Island Music Presents–yet another string to his bow in expanding his ever-growing creative repertoire. As of yet, Island Music Presents has put on 10 shows in the past 8 months, with a conscious priority to spotlight young, local musicians.

Paul’s philosophy of breaking barriers for local musicians involves bringing the ‘right caliber of artists’ to the island and having local musicians support them at grassroots venues. In Paul’s words ‘this helps raise the bar for local artists’, particularly in a way that brings their names into the public eye. ‘It’s just about capturing that public imagination’. If bringing Justin Hawkins to perform at The Opera House and the Freedom Centre is what it takes to strengthen Jersey’s music scene, then we’re fully on board.

Paul’s philosophy of breaking barriers for local musicians involves bringing the ‘right caliber of artists’ to the island and having local musicians support them at grassroots venues. “

Despite Paul’s unequivocally inspiring efforts to amplify Jersey’s music scene, he expresses concerns about the ‘ceiling’ that looms over Jersey’s creatives, particularly musicians: ‘I think that’s the problem with Jersey if you’re to make a success of it, you’ve got to get your stuff together early doors, and then get off the island: because we don’t have an all encompassing scene’. Yet, there is hope for change. Paul suggests that we may be on the brink of a ‘guitar boom,’ noting, ‘fourteen-year-olds are coming through and listening to the same music I did as a teenager.’ Perhaps the current generation of teens hold the key to revitalising Jersey’s music scene.

If you missed the last open day on the 29th of November and are eager to explore music education opportunities - or even have a chat about the enhancement of Jersey’s music scene - take a stroll over to West Centre. You might even get the chance to sit on their retro Yamaha sports bike. But they’ll certainly be keen to tell you about the enthralling new courses launching in 2026, including Charlie’s 12 week Blues Guitar program, tailored to adults. You might also be lucky enough to try your hand at their Ernie Ball vending machine to grab some Christmas goodies for your favourite guitar enthusiasts, or check out the stunning pieces of art by local artist DEEP (David Prescott) scattered throughout the space.

At the heart of Red House Yamaha Music School and Island Music is a shared passion: it’s not just about picking up an instrument and learning to play, but about fostering creativity and providing a space for experimentation without judgment. Step inside, let the music fill not just your ears but your heart, and be part of the Island’s next chapter of music.
