Editor’s Letter A new season is almost upon us. Those who travelled for the summer are returning and new friends and neighbours are arriving in our midst. In many parts of the world, the cooler season is a time of winding down, getting ready for chill winds and dark nights. But for us here in the Middle East, it sometimes feels more like a rebirth. Like phoenixes, we rise from the ashes of our scorching summer and prepare for the joys of wrapping up, but lightly, embracing new trends and getting ready to enjoy outdoor social events once again. To make sure you look the part, we have our big roundup of autumn-winter fashion trends.

Trust me, there are stylish days ahead.

You’ll notice some changes in this issue. We’re embracing a more wellness-focussed vibe and, in that vein, we chatted to Michèle Evrard, founder of Cosmetics 27, about her approach to regeneration and longevity, and caught up with Linn Deman, of Bébélux Babyspa & Wellness, to learn about her inspirations. We also have a special report on the wellness trends we’ll be watching in the second half of the year.

Our spa experiences this month were at The Ritz-Carlton Doha and Alwadi Hotel Doha - MGallery Collection, after all wellness can always be mixed with a little indulgence. And speaking of indulgence, I sampled a rather fabulous afternoon tea at Peacock Alley, at Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay. A treat indeed.

For this month’s Diva Drives, my colleague got behind the wheel of the Range Rover SE. Meanwhile I took my own wellness very seriously with a trip to Italy – there are few things better for the mind, body and soul than time spent with good friends in a gorgeous place, you can read about my experience in our Travel Escapes pages.

Historical Display Heritage house Burberry and London’s V&A Museum have announced an upcoming exhibition celebrating the iconic Burberry trench.

Rare material from the Burberry Archive and the V&A collection will go on show at the museum to mark the brand’s 170th anniversary.

The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon will run from September 21 to the beginning of January 2027 at the Prince Consort Gallery. very year, Carte Blanche gives Creative Director Claire Choisne an opportunity to reflect anew on what is considered precious.

In 2024’s Or Bleu, she explored the increasing scarcity of water; in 2025, she addressed the disappearance of nature through Impermanence. This year, she makes the case that, in an ever more artificial world, what is truly precious is humanity. A trained jeweller, with a keen appreciation for the technical mastery that only human hands can attain, she believes that nothing will ever supplant human creativity and artisanal craftsmanship.

The Human Being collection features five jewellery sets, Flower, Rain, Light, Tattoo and Checkers, through which the differences and similarities that distinguish each of us are highlighted. WHAT CONNECTS US? Claire Choisne decided to focus on an archetypal form of High Jewellery necklace to represent this common denominator. She settled on that great classic, the cluster necklace, with its grouped stones forming a unified composition. This core design is reproduced in five very Boucheron jewellery sets, each consisting of a necklace and a ring.

WHAT SETS US APART? In this collection, a diversity of savoir-faire, colours and materials are employed to express our distinctive qualities and to endow each set with its own emotional character. This collection presents a profound human vision of High Jewellery, where artisans from disparate realms bring together their skills, technical know-how and artistry. Between them, they spent over 14,000 hours crafting the collection, a testament to the breadth and brilliance of the savoir-faire involved.

FLOWER The necklace is set with a 3.26-carat D VVS1 cushion-cut diamond, pink quartz totalling 1,532 carats, paved with diamonds, in pink gold, white gold and platinum. The ring is set with a 0.71-carat E VVS1 pear-cut diamond, pink quartz totalling 141 carats, paved with diamonds, in sapphire glass, in pink gold, white gold and platinum.

This set, which required around 3,290 hours of work, was inspired by a motif that the studio team designed like a richly patterned floral wallpaper. From tender bud to fully unfurled petals, each stage of a flower’s blossoming unfolds across the body in a symmetrical composition where the blooms seem to spring from the very stone itself.

RAIN With this set, Claire Choisne sought to create the illusion of a cascade of diamonds raining down onto the skin. The material recedes, leaving the stones seemingly suspended in space and time. In a bid to heighten the sense of transparency, the Creative Director revisited a favorite material, rock crystal.

LIGHT The set took around 3,750 hours of work and the design plays with different sizes, shapes, positions and combinations of morganites – some set with diamonds – in a way that allows light to flow freely through the stones.

TATTOO Taking around 3,740 hours of work, with this set, Claire Choisne sought to recreate the effect of tattoos on skin. The motifs that decorate these pieces were inspired by the aesthetic of Victorian-era tattoos.

CHECKERS This set takes a textile pattern that Claire Choisne is particularly fond of, houndstooth, and transposes it into stone. Thus, jewellery almost becomes garment, in a nod to the world of couture so dear to Boucheron.

elebrating 30 years of living legacy and independent vision, the Carillon Tourbillon is part of the Objets D’Art Collection and draws on the memory of historic watches, the intelligence of chiming mechanisms, the patience of the ateliers, the precision of the constructors, the knowledge of the artisans and the endless pursuit of balance.

Taking its inspiration from an early 19th-century Perrin Frères pocket watch from the Sandoz Collection, restored

by Parmigiani Fleurier in 2000, it is entirely conceived, developed, constructed, assembled and finished in-house.

The white gold case includes vertical gadroons inspired by classical columns, a glass box sapphire crystal, visible hammers on the dial side and a hand-hammered Morning Blue dial.

One of its most recognisable features is the four serpentine gongs. Directly inspired by the Perrin Frères pocket watch, their long undulating curves embrace the architecture of the watch, giving it its visual identity.

The tourbillon and the power-reserve indicator are positioned on the reverse of the watch, where the movement opens fully to the eye. On the dial side, the reading remains clear, balanced, almost silent.

The chiming complication is staged with precision. On the dial side, the hammers are visible in both their function and their mechanical choreography, revealing the very instant in which time is about to become sound.

The calibre is composed of 456 components meticulously assembled by hand. Its construction is based on a highly sophisticated mechanical architecture built around two superimposed barrels, ensuring the transmission of power through the gear train and guaranteeing an exceptional 12-day power reserve.

The third barrel, dedicated to the striking mechanism, is automatically rewound when the striking slide is activated, and only when the minute repeater is engaged.

The four gongs compose a complete and nuanced chime: one low-pitched for the hours, one high-pitched for the minutes and two additional gongs, each with its own note, for the quarters Together, they create a four-note melody – distinctive, harmonious and immediately recognisable.

Produced in only five examples, the piece is conceived for transmission, for collections that look beyond the instant, for those who recognise in an horological creation not only an achievement but a culture.

Cosmetics 27 was born from a very personal journey and a deep understanding of skin health. Can you share the story behind the creation of the brand?

After a ski accident in 1996, I underwent two knee surgeries that left a long scar on my leg. Determined to erase every trace of that experience, I tested various healing creams on different parts of the scar and discovered the remarkable properties of Centella Asiatica. Where I applied it, the scar almost completely disappeared. Having studied botany and medicinal plants during my pharmacy training, I began researching this plant more deeply. From that insight, I set out to develop a product rooted in both science and personal experience: a daily skin-regenerating and protective remedy that harnesses the skin’s own healing intelligence. That product became Baume 27.

Centella Asiatica is at the heart of Cosmetics 27 and has become one of the brand’s most recognised signatures.

What first drew you to this remarkable ingredient, and why does it remain so central to your formulations today?

I discovered Centella Asiatica’s remarkable properties while healing post-surgery scars. My research led me to Professor FX Maquart, a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Professor at the University of Reims, whose pioneering work on the plant’s regenerating properties was a true inspiration. His insights helped me select the right extracts, dosages and skin biomarkers to target.

I chose three of its most active molecules, three heterosides: madecassoside, asiaticoside and asiatic acid. They have exceptional repairing, regenerating and anti-inflammatory activities. Together, they form the CICA-MA2 Complex: an entirely unique proprietary ingredient, distinct from anything and any standardised extract of Centella commonly used in the industry.

As a pharmacist and skincare innovator, you have long advocated a regenerative approach to beauty. What does skin regeneration mean in practical terms for consumers, and how does it differ from traditional anti-ageing skincare?

Regeneration is the skin’s daily response to damage: a selfrepair mechanism rooted in homeostasis, the body’s innate drive towards balance. With age and accumulated external and internal stressors, this capacity gradually diminishes. My goal has been to restore it, to give the skin its resilience back.

I rarely use the term ‘anti-ageing’. I advocate for regeneration instead. My philosophy is not about reversing time but about improving how we age. Longevity is the true purpose.

Modern lifestyles place significant stress on the skin, from environmental aggressors and pollution to lack of sleep and daily stress. How does Cosmetics 27 help support skin health and resilience in today’s world?

Our first rule is to not further damage the skin, so we include soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredients and the most preventative way is to focus on antioxidants that will reinforce the skin’s resilience. One topic that is also part of our approach to skin health and protection is balancing the microbiome. The microbiome is kind of the fourth layer and very first line of defence of our skin. The probiotics fight back and prevent bacterial and other pathogen invasion. We integrate prebiotics and postbiotics in all our formulas, these help maintain the integrity of the microbiome which is increasingly attacked in our daily lives.

Cosmetics 27 is known for combining pharmaceutical expertise, naturally derived ingredients and rigorous formulation standards. What principles guide product development at the brand, and why are they so important to you?

My pharmacy training gave me a strong foundation in formulation: dosage, ingredient safety, absorption and efficacy. It taught me that what you apply – or ingest – has a real effect on the body. From the start, I worked with natural, plant-based ingredients while minimising chemicals, never compromising on safety or results. Each formula takes up to three years to validate.

I work until every formula meets my expectations: texture, application, finish, naturality and – most importantly – skin penetration.

All our formulas are biomimetic – a concept that predates current trends.

They must have a true affinity with the skin, reproducing its physico-chemical structure through lamellar emulsions, a type of emulsion that mimics the skin’s hydro-lipidic structure. We talk about ‘skin-mimetism’. It adds significant complexity to the formulation process, but it is non-negotiable.

Skin barrier health has become one of the most important topics in modern skincare. How do Cosmetics 27 formulations support skin resilience and long-term barrier function, particularly in an environment where consumers are often exposed to over-treatment and excessive product use?

The skin barrier is the part of the skin we have to preserve at all times. It is a barrier where many exchanges take place, water, temperature, toxins… so, it has to remain in good health and condition. It is right above the dermis and is also a promoter for dermis regeneration. So, the stronger the barrier, the better the skin structure and integrity will remain.

The barrier is a hydro-lipidic structure, so it needs water and oil to maintain its activity. Omega 3 and 6 are important to reinforce the structure, as well as peptides and antioxidants. We also use ceramides in all formulas, they are an important component of the cellular membranes, helping maintain hydration and supporting cellular renewal.

The results! Customers stay loyal and faithful to what ‘talks’ to them. There is a solution for everyone in our products because we take care of the skin, bringing it what it needs to strive and build its resilience and maintain its balance. We pride ourselves on having a very loyal base of customers (addicts!). They might go and search for a miracle rejuvenating product, but they always come back because we are good to their skin!

Looking back at the journey of Cosmetics 27, what achievement or milestone makes you most proud?

Women’s – and men’s – satisfaction and loyalty! I receive very personal and moving testimonials and questions. People are most often lost with their skin and in a market overflowing with newness, extreme claims, the quest for more and better, they don’t know how to choose and what to choose.

That’s why I put such importance on education and service, helping people better understand their skin and take care of it.

The GCC is one of the world’s most dynamic beauty markets, with consumers who are highly educated and engaged in skincare. What aspects of Cosmetics 27 do you believe will resonate most strongly with this audience?

Indeed, the GCC represents important markets, with a high level of conscience and education on beauty and aesthetics. I am convinced our approach to wellageing and skin health will resonate with their expectations. Regeneration, skin health, longevity, gentle routines, all talk to the GCC customers. Their

skin is being put through tremendous pressure from daily exposure and, very often, many treatments. We support skin repair and balance. Our products empower the skin from the microbiota to cellular regeneration.

We are not a ‘trendy’ brand with miraculous results, we are anchored in longevity and our mission is to empower all skin!

Looking ahead, what innovations, scientific developments or consumer shifts do you believe will shape the future of skincare and skin longevity over the next decade?

AI will clearly reshape part of the market, whether it is on new concepts, research and development processes, time to market, customer data and understanding, market segmentation, creative processes and creation, personalisation of beauty; it will guide customers’ behaviours and be the source of advice. But the one thing that AI will not do is make a customer buy a product they don’t appreciate or that doesn’t do anything good for their skin! Other than this, I believe that skincare will move closer to medical, that is already happening. At C27, we conduct clinical tests tracking biomarkers to understand a product’s actual activity on the skin, rather than simply validating beauty claims. The future belongs to those who are agile and will make intelligent use of the research.

As Cosmetics 27 prepares to launch across the GCC, what message would you like to share with consumers who will be discovering the brand for the first time?

Just try it, experience it. Hard marketing is one thing; personal experience is the only way to know. Do not expect miracles, but better skin, good skin.

The one piece of advice I would give is to stick to a routine. Results happen after a minimum of 27 days, then the key is to maintain them!

OHLALA – You’re originally from Belgium, what brought you to Qatar?

Linn Deman – I moved to Qatar 12 years ago with my husband when he accepted a position with Qatar Airways. I left my job and life in Belgium behind and arrived without a job of my own, which was quite a big step at the time.

We didn’t know exactly how long we would stay, but we knew it wasn’t going to be short-term. Over the years, Qatar became home. We built our life and family here, and eventually it also became the place where I took the step into entrepreneurship and created Bébélux.

OHLALA – Please tell us a bit about your background, outside of the wellness space?

Linn – My background is actually very different from wellness. I’ve always worked in sales and business development, both in Belgium and Qatar, mainly within the interiors and real estate industries.

Working with high-end furniture and interiors is probably where my eye for design and detail developed, while my years in a targetdriven corporate environment really shaped my business mindset.

That experience has definitely influenced how I built Bébélux, from the business side to the look and feel of the spa. I actually designed the spa myself — from the layout and colours to the overall concept.

It was very much my own vision, which I think is one of the reasons the space feels so personal to me.

OHLALA – How did you go about developing the treatments you would offer and has this offering changed/developed over the years?

Linn – When we first opened, our main focus was the baby spa, with just one treatment room dedicated to women, initially offering pregnancy massage. We quickly saw a much bigger demand for prenatal and postnatal wellness than we had expected.

Over the years, Bébélux naturally evolved into a complete mom and baby wellness space, supporting women from pregnancy through postpartum and beyond. We’ve also expanded into women’s treatments and facials, carefully selecting treatments and products with pregnancy and breastfeeding in mind.

In many ways, Bébélux has grown together with our clients — we started with babies, but quickly realised that caring for the mother is just as important.

OHLALA – What’s your own personal favourite treatment and why?

Linn – My personal favourite will always be our Baby Hydrotherapy & Massage. It’s where Bébélux started and it’s still at the heart of what makes us unique.

There’s something very special about watching a baby enjoy the water and seeing the mother share that moment with them. Even though Bébélux has grown into so much more over the years, the baby spa will always be the heart of the concept for me.

OHLALA – Where did the inspiration for Babyspa come from, was it something you personally saw a niche for?

Linn – The idea came during my maternity leave, during COVID. I had seen baby spas becoming popular in Belgium and other parts of Europe and loved the concept. Since travelling wasn’t really possible at the time, I started looking for something similar in Qatar and was surprised to find that it didn’t really exist here.

Then one evening I had this slightly crazy thought: what if we opened a baby spa in Qatar ourselves? I realised there was a genuine gap in the market for something I would have personally loved to experience as a mother. From there, I started researching what it would take to turn that idea into a real business.

OHLALA – Parental wellness seems to be an area of growth, is there increasing demand for more inclusive offerings for mums and young children?

Linn – Absolutely. We’ve seen that mothers increasingly want experiences where they can focus on their own wellbeing while still having their baby close. That’s why we offer Mommy & Baby packages, as well as the option to bring baby along during selected treatments.

We’ve also created several collaborations and events at the spa, from our We Care Wednesdays to baby massage and sensory classes, first-aid sessions, women’s health talks and Pilates. For us, parental wellness goes beyond treatments — it’s also about creating a space where mothers can take care of themselves, learn and connect.

OHLALA – What was the initial reaction, how was the concept received?

Linn – The response was very positive from the beginning. At the time, the baby spa concept was still quite new in the Middle East and there wasn’t anything quite like it in Qatar, so naturally there was a lot of curiosity.

At the same time, we had to educate mothers that baby hydrotherapy and massage were not just something cute and fun. They can also support movement, coordination and relaxation, while creating a special bonding experience between mother and baby. I think that combination helped the concept connect with our clients very quickly.

OHLALA – Do you plan to expand Babyspa or move into other areas of wellness? What does the future look like?

Linn – Our main focus is on consistency, continuing to specialise in what we do and constantly improving the client experience.

We’ve built a strong identity around baby, prenatal and postnatal wellness, and the goal is to keep developing our expertise and raising the standard of what we offer.

For me, growth doesn’t always mean becoming bigger — it’s also about becoming better at what we do. Of course, I would love to expand Bébélux in the future, and I can definitely see the concept growing further within the Middle East when the right opportunity comes.

Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, which are thought to interact with cells and support processes involved in skin health and recovery. Its potential benefits for collagen production, inflammation reduction and muscle recovery have garnered attention on social media. HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY The hyperbaric chamber looks like something from The Matrix, but the principle behind it is surprisingly straightforward. You lie inside a pressurised chamber while breathing oxygen at a higher concentration than you normally would. More oxygen reaching your cells means faster recovery, which is why it’s long been used to speed up healing. Lately it’s found a second life in the longevity and biohacking world, with plenty buzzing about its potential anti-ageing benefits, and it’s being explored for post workout/training recovery and general well-being.

CRYOTHERAPY Cryotherapy involves stepping into a chamber filled with extremely cold, dry air, often as low as minus 100 degrees Celsius, for a few short minutes at a time. Braving that kind of cold might sound like the last thing you want to do during the cold weather, but cryotherapy fans insist it’s worth it. ’m always interested in a treatment that does more than just massage. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll happily spend an hour doing absolutely nothing, but if I can walk out feeling relaxed and like my skin has had a proper reset, even better. That’s the thinking behind The Ritz-Carlton Spa’s Signature Wellness Experience – Revitalising Body Sculpt Massage.

Once I’ve finished sipping my signature tea made with ginger, honey and lemongrass, and filled in my consultation form, my therapist, Eisi comes to collect me. She explains that it’s a treatment recommended during Doha’s hotter months, when the heat can leave you feeling puffy, sluggish and in need of a circulation boost. Rather than being one long massage, it layers different techniques together. First comes dry brushing, something I already swear by at home because nothing leaves skin quite so smooth.

The Relaxing Salt Scrub follows to polish away dullness before a quick shower makes way for the more targeted part of the treatment.

Next step is the Detoxifying Algae Gel. It has a thick, almost cocooning texture and a comforting warmth that instantly envelops the body. Eisi works it in with firm kneading, lifting movements and rhythmic tapping. It’s intense, but never uncomfortable, and you can feel the focus on stimulating circulation rather than simply helping you drift off. While the gel is left to do its thing, my scalp is getting all the attention. After another quick rinse, the final act is exactly what you want by that point: a full-body massage using the Energising Signature Blend Oil, with peppermint, eucalyptus and rosemary bringing everything back down a notch. Like any sculpting treatment,

the best results come with consistency rather than a single session. What I like most is that you never have to choose between results and relaxation.

You get the exfoliation, the circulation boost and all the skin-loving benefits, but you still leave with that post-spa feeling everyone is actually there for.

A FACIAL WORTH THE HYPE That could easily be enough for one visit. Instead, there is still one more treatment waiting for me. Eisi encourages me to take my time and settle back with another cup of tea while the room is prepared for the second part of my spa day. I’m soon greeted by Hope for the skincare treatment – The Method Augustinus Bader. As a long-time fan of the brand, famous for its patented TFC8 technology (a complex of vitamins, amino acids and naturally occurring molecules designed to support the skin’s natural renewal process), I was especially looking forward to this.

It all starts with a double cleanse, which I’m always happy to see. Hope begins with The Cleansing Balm, taking her time to massage until it melts into a silky oil. She follows with The Cream Cleansing Gel to remove any last traces of impurities without that squeaky-clean feeling some cleansers leave behind. Next comes The Essence, one of those products that does a bit of everything without overcomplicating your routine. It gently exfoliates, hydrates and helps refine the skin, but what I like is how it’s used during the treatment. Rather than applying it and moving straight on, Hope leaves it on before positioning a facial steamer over my face for around seven minutes. The gentle warmth instantly makes the whole experience even more relaxing.

Once my face is perfectly clean, we get to what is, for me, the best part of any facial: the massage. A few drops of The Face Oil are warmed between the therapist’s hands. It gives just the right amount of slip for the sculpting massage while leaving my skin feeling instantly more comfortable and supple. She alternates between lifting techniques, slow draining movements and firmer strokes along the jawline and cheekbones, before bringing in a gua sha tool to release areas holding onto more tension. Next step is The Face Cream Mask, applied generously before being left on for around 15 minutes beneath an LED mask to give my skin time to drink it all in. To finish, Hope layers on the brand’s The Serum, The Eye Cream and The Ultimate Soothing Cream to seal everything in.

I’m always slightly sceptical when a facial promises instant results, but this one genuinely delivers. My complexion looks brighter, fresher and far more even than when I walked in, with that healthy glow that usually only shows up after a really good night’s sleep. If you’re already an Augustinus Bader fan, it’s a great way to experience the range differently. Don’t be surprised if you leave wondering whether it’s finally time to invest in that Face Cream you’ve been eyeing for months!

’m not particularly interested in how many treatment rooms a spa has or how big the changing area is. What I notice are the little things: the welcome, the atmosphere, the therapist and whether I actually manage to switch off. Those are the details that make or break the experience, so that’s exactly what I was paying attention to when I stepped inside M|SPA. I was welcomed with a refreshing drink made of ginger, lemon and honey, served alongside dates and mixed nuts. My therapist, Mia, showed me around, pointing out the private steam and sauna rooms guests can use during their visit (a definite plus for a boutique spa) before leading me to the treatment room. I’ll admit it: I’m ridiculously picky when it comes to spa rooms. If the lighting is too bright, the music too loud or the air conditioning is trying to recreate the Arctic, I’m already mentally checking out. Somehow, they got every single detail right. Waiting on the bed was a small tray with a handwritten welcome card and a few delicate rosebuds, a thoughtful touch inviting me to relax and enjoy.

SCRUBBED TO PERFECTION The ritual kicked off with a warm foot bath and a lavender scrub before I even got near the massage table. I genuinely wish more spas did this. Those few quiet minutes create a proper pause, giving you the chance to slow down before switching off completely instead of climbing straight onto the bed with your mind still racing through emails, notifications and tonight’s dinner plans. Once I was comfortably settled, Mia began the first part of the ritual: the Body Scrub, using the Marine Body Scrub, a blend of sea salt crystals that gently buffs and smooths the skin, with Chondrus crispus extract to replenish moisture and leave it silky soft. I’m a huge fan of a traditional hammam, but every now and then it’s nice to switch things up. This offers the same satisfying deep exfoliation but with a slightly gentler touch. And let’s be honest, it’s also one less thing to squeeze into your Saturday routine.

For the next 30 minutes, she worked methodically from head to toe. It’s amazing how many areas you either rush through or completely ignore when you’re doing it yourself. Here, every inch received the same level of attention.

And it quickly became obvious to me that she had exactly the kind of hands I was hoping for: strong, confident and incredibly precise. I immediately caught myself thinking, ‘if this is the exfoliation, the massage is going to be very, very good’. While the room was being reset for the next ritual, I jumped into the shower to rinse everything off. By the time I reached for my towel, the difference was already noticeable. My skin was unbelievably soft and had the sort of glow that usually takes far more effort at home.

MORE THAN YOUR AVERAGE THAI MASSAGE The scrub had already won me over but the Thai Herbal Massage was the one I’d been waiting for. Before anything else, Mia invited me to close my eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths before gently striking a singing bowl three times. In Thai wellness traditions, the sound is used to quiet the mind and mark the beginning of a moment dedicated entirely to relaxation. There’s something incredibly calming about hearing those vibrations slowly fade into silence. For the massage, she used Charme d’Orient’s Black Tea Oil, enriched with sweet almond oil and lightly warmed beforehand. Her pressure was spot on: firm enough to work out the tension, but never painful. She knew exactly where to linger and where to move on, and I never found myself tensing up in anticipation. What I enjoyed the most were definitely the steamed herbal compresses. If you’ve never tried one before, you’re in for a treat.

Small cotton pouches are packed with herbs, including ginger, lemongrass, turmeric and lavender, before being steamed until they’re almost too hot to touch. Rather than placing them straight onto the skin, they were gently tapped over each area first, giving my body a chance to get used to the heat. Only then did the therapist begin pressing, rolling and gliding them across my muscles. This helps them release much faster than with hands alone. As everything softens, the therapist can work further into areas of tension while keeping the whole experience incredibly comfortable.

Then, as if I wasn’t already sold, out came the hot stones. Mia used them across my shoulders before resting them on my stomach for a few moments.

It might sound like a small addition but it worked wonders. Because it’s rooted in traditional Thai techniques, the massage also included gentle stretches and mobility movements along the way. I wasn’t obviously folded into impossible yoga poses but it was enough to lengthen the spine and bring a little more freedom back into the body. By the time it came to an end, I wasn’t in that heavy, post-massage haze where all you want is your bed. I walked out feeling refreshed and surprisingly energised. Which, if you ask me, is the sign of a really good treatment.

I

am a confirmed Italophile. From the language to the history, the almost universal love of dogs to the gorgeous scenery and, of course, the amazing food, I’ve yet to find anything about this European gem that I don’t like. That said, my visits have mostly been confined to the west, from Tuscany to Rome, down to my beloved Naples and south to Amalfi.

This time though, in celebration of a friend’s ‘big’ birthday, I was happily heading to Puglia, right down in the boot on the east coast, a land of ancient customs and olive trees. I have to admit that getting there was a bit of a faff, flying into Rome then grabbing a connecting hop to Bari.

But, spoiler alert, it was totally worth it!

As one must when visiting Puglia, or Apulia, as it’s also known, we stayed in a converted trullo. And though it’s listed as an Airbnb, Trulli Ad Maiora was, honestly, like something out of a fairy tale. Trulli are distinctive dry stone buildings with conical rooves, often bearing mystical signs. The origins of the building method are pre-historic but the modern ones mostly date to the 19th century and they give the landscape around Alberobello, where the highest concentration is found, a truly magical quality.

Arriving at Ad Maiora, we could scarcely believe our eyes. Even before we entered our home for the next few days, the grounds were breathtaking.

Coming from our arid region, it was a real treat to arrive to the scent of multiple blooms. From roses to numerous different species of lavender alongside flowering trees and plants we couldn’t immediately identify.

We were told that the gardens and grounds hold 1,950 native plants as well as 45 ancient olive trees and there’s even an organic garden, from which we could pick fresh produce.

Butterflies and bees were in abundance, we adored just sitting watching them, and it felt like stepping into a little piece of paradise, even before we spotted our own large private pool, sauna and steam room and spa bath found in the secluded ‘Secret Garden’!

There was also a stone gazebo with a central table and outside kitchen for al fresco dining – Ad Maiora even offers a private butler service and the option to have a personal cooking class, which we took advantage of, making the most of the balmy weather to enjoy dinner under the stars.

Inside, the six-cone complex was cool, thanks to the thick stone walls and underfloor cooling. My bedroom was simply gorgeous, the feeling of sleeping under one of those iconic conical structures just never got old and the adjoining bathroom with its pale honey stone and gushing shower felt like my own private sanctuary. www.ohlalamag.net

We could quite happily have spent all our time at the property but exploring was also on the menu and on our first full day, we headed into Alberobello town, just 1.5km away. The Unesco World Heritage Site is home to the region’s largest concentration of hundreds of trulli and we roamed the steeply rising streets of the Rione Monti district, where the whitewashed walls beneath their conical rooves house homes, shops, boutiques and restaurants. The area gives a real sense of history and, while the hillside trulli are beautifully preserved, we were also hugely impressed by the large, clean town square lined with restaurants, where we sampled local seafood and a refreshing spritz.

We also visited Ostuni, known as La Città Bianca or The White City for its whitewashed houses. Heading to a local market, we marvelled at the huge selection of fresh fruit and vegetables; tomatoes ripened under the Italian sun and rich aromatic cheeses definitely caught our eyes.

Then it was time to head upwards again, through the old city’s narrow, winding streets. Mediaeval alleys and courtyards gave the whole area an atmospheric feel, as if we’d almost stepped back in time, and it’s worth noting that local bylaws are quite strict to make sure the city’s unique feel is preserved.

After a couple of days of sight-seeing, we were ready for an evening at ‘home’. Enter Chef Carmela, who came to Trulli Ad Maiora to help us make the most of that gorgeous outdoor dining space. Handing each of us an apron, she demonstrated how to make Orecchiette, the region’s traditional ‘little ear’ pasta, then set us to work as we helped her prepare succulent, spicy meatballs. That evening’s meal, under a glowing sky and gleaming garden chandelier, became one of the prized memories of our stay.

The following night, it was time for the big birthday dinner at Graecalis, a rather fancy fish restaurant in nearby Polignano a Mare, kindly recommended by our host. We sat outside amid the scents of the Italian countryside, our table in a stunning setting neighbouring an ancient olive grove with fairy lights strung overhead, where we enjoyed some of the best seafood I have tasted in a very long time. Big, juicy prawns, superbly fresh and adorned with local herbs in a bisque I could have eaten just on its own. My dining companions shared a locally-caught lobster, which they declared superb.

On our last day, we headed to the coastal town of Monopoli to explore the Baroque cathedral and its ancient tombs before heading back for a wellearnt afternoon by the pool with some chilled bubbles to toast our stay.

Before I knew it, it was time to say farewell to Puglia but I will definitely return. We went before the summer season gained full momentum, so, though there were tourists (yes, I appreciate the irony), none of the places we visited were overly crowded and I would highly recommend a shoulder season visit. There is so much more to see and do, more iconic sites to visit and history to unwrap. And though Napoli will always be my first love, it certainly has a new contender for my affections.

I

have to admit, I’m a big fan of many things traditional and it honestly doesn’t get much more old-school than a classic afternoon tea in a setting with the history of Peacock Alley.

For the uninitiated, the original Waldorf Astoria in New York was, in fact, two neighbouring properties. When they were combined, Peacock Alley was the space that joined them, inheriting the class, elegance and traditions of both. That was in 1897 and, of course, the tradition of afternoon tea goes back even further, with its origins attributed to the British Duchess of Bedford, who introduced the idea 50 years earlier, in 1840.

Since I was lucky enough to be staying at the Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay, it seemed the ideal opportunity to check out this legend.

I arrived mid-afternoon and was surprised to find the venue quiet, but within 15 minutes, it was filling up with a mix of locals and expats, chatting and enjoying the atmosphere. It seems Doha has its afternoon tea timing set like clockwork.

Since I was alone, I was happy to stretch out on one of the comfortable sofas with my book and wait for my feast to begin. I didn’t have to wait long. Peacock Alley has many variations of excellent leaf teas and infusions but, as I said, I’m a traditionalist, so English Breakfast was my choice and it was rather excellent, a strong and flavourful brew that pleased even this tea snob.

The afternoon tea stand swiftly followed, looking pretty and loaded with sandwiches, cakes and goodies. I couldn’t wait to tuck in.

The selection of crustless sandwiches was fab, with something to please every taste from different breads to imaginative fillings, each with an inventive topping for extra flavour. The chicken version came on crunchily toasted brown bread with a daub of dressing topped by a salty potato chip – a great combination of tastes and textures that definitely felt like more.

The cucumber sandwich looked beautiful with its deep red beetroot crisp topping. The combination of fresh crunchy cucumber with tart labneh with the texture of cream cheese, was a definite winner. But my favourite was spicy tuna, very lightly toasted with a bright, salty crusting of tobiko and tiny chopped chives. Satisfying and deeply savoury, I really enjoyed this one.

The egg mayo presented a surprising combination topped with grated cheese, edible flower leaves and enoki mushrooms for a light, sweet, earthy tang. And, lastly, grilled vegetable with cheese was filling and comforting – you can’t beat a grilled cheese.

After such an abundance of savouries, my stomach was demanding a break – even though my eyes were fixed on the cakes, which looked like miniature works of art – so I took some time to digest and relish my historical surroundings.

Peacock Alley is fully immersed in the hotel’s gorgeous art deco vibe with pale walls, mirrored surfaces and plush oatmeal coloured seating alongside pale blue velvet stools. Potted orchids pick up the white of the baby grand piano above which an impressive row of chandeliers casts sparkling, fragmented light. And when the piano is silent, gentle background music creates atmosphere without ever imposing on the conversations all around.

CHIC EATS

Before long I was ready to sample the sweet sensations and my first port of call was the freshly baked scones, wrapped in a pristine white napkin and still warm from the oven. They came, of course, with pots of clotted cream and various homemade jams. Heaven! I went for the almond and vanilla option, the crisp, golden outer crust, topped with toasted almonds, giving way to a light, fluffy interior, absolutely perfect for slathering with the jam and cream.

I could quite easily (and sensibly) have stopped there, but that would have been a disservice to the obvious talents of the pastry chef who had provided a bevvy of delicacies for my delectation. And, oh my, did they delight.

A selection of cakes, maybe three bites apiece, included a delicious rose mousse topped with a ripe strawberry, it was sweet and comforting; an amazing Valrhona brownie, topped with a thin crispy biscuit, was a chocolate lover’s dream, rich, dark and slightly tart; the famed pistachio sphere crowned by a golden tuile presented a nutty, creamy interior that wrapped my tastebuds in happiness; and my favourite, though they were all rather fabulous, was the citrus meringue nest – sweet, crunchy meringue topped by skinless slices of baby orange.

Not surprisingly, I couldn’t finish the whole selection but, since I was staying at the hotel, I cheekily asked for a takeaway box and continued the feast in my room later that evening. A practice I would fully recommend.

My visit to Peacock Alley was an absolute treat. The atmosphere is welcoming but still refined and elegant. The service attentive and welcoming without becoming intrusive and the surroundings are a true reflection of Waldorf Astoria’s long-standing legacy. A return trip is very definitely in order.

ange Rover has spent more than half a century shaping the luxury SUV, and the latest SE shows how comfortably that identity can evolve. Mild-hybrid assistance joins the familiar mix of refinement and capability, yet the car remains unmistakably Range Rover.

We spent time with the new model to see how the latest powertrain fitted into the experience. Given Range Rover’s standing among luxury SUVs, there was plenty for the SE to live up to.

GRACE WITH GRAVITAS In person, the new Range Rover has a beautifully sculpted quality. Broad, smooth surfaces give the body real presence without making it look heavy, while the falling roofline, strong waistline and rising sill line create that unmistakable profile. The short front overhang and tapered boat-tail rear lend elegance to its substantial proportions.

The modern colour suited our test car superbly, emphasising the smooth surfaces and clean lines of the bodywork. The Nickel Atlas Exterior Pack adds measured contrast, while Pixel LED headlights sharpen the front.

To our eyes, the 22-inch diamond-turned wheels gave the car a stronger,

more grounded stance.

The deployable side steps extended when needed, then tucked themselves neatly away again — preserving the clean lines, along with our dignity on the way in.

LAYERS OF LUXURY Inside, the option of the Caraway cabin made an immediate impression.

Perforated Windsor leather, Noble Chrome controls, Natural Brown Walnut veneer and Duo Tone headlining gave the interior richness and depth. The Extended Leather Upgrade added yet another layer of refinement, while the low, layered dashboard and neatly integrated vents kept the architecture clean and calm.

The 20-way electrically adjustable front seats offered memory, four-way lumbar adjustment and cushion extension, while rear passengers benefited from power recline. From the Command Driving Position, visibility was excellent and the Range Rover’s size soon felt easy to judge.

Cabin Air Purification Pro could prime the interior before a journey, while the centre-console refrigerator kept drinks chilled. The latter quickly justified its place in the console.

D I VA D R I V E S CONTROL WITHOUT COMPLEXITY The technology matched the cabin’s restraint. The curved 13.1-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen is substantial, but its slim, floating appearance keeps the dashboard elegant, and the functions we used most were generally only a tap or two away.

The Interactive Driver Display presented key information clearly, while wireless charging reduced clutter. The ClearSight interior rear-view mirror and 3D Surround Camera proved particularly useful in tighter spaces.

Our test car’s Meridian Sound System combined a 400W amplifier, 14 speakers and a dual-channel subwoofer. The sound was rich, beautifully detailed and generous enough to lend a little credibility to some questionable playlist choices.

POWER BENEATH THE POLISH On the road, the mild-hybrid system suited the Range Rover exceptionally well. Its 2,996cc six-cylinder setup produces 360PS and 500Nm, channelled through an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

With Dynamic Launch engaged, 0-100km/h took 6.2 seconds. For a luxury SUV weighing around 2.4 tonnes, the acceleration felt almost cheekily brisk. The Range Rover gathered speed with impressive authority, never giving the impression that mass was something it needed to negotiate.

Electronic Air Suspension and Adaptive Dynamics maintained the composure we expected, while All Wheel Steering made the SE noticeably easier to place at lower speeds. The 10.95-metre kerb-to-kerb turning circle was especially welcome in town.

Terrain Response 2, a twin-speed transfer box, 291mm of off-road ride height and 900mm wading depth preserve this Range Rover’s formidable ability beyond the tarmac.

ASSURANCE WITHOUT INTERFERENCE The assistance systems were comprehensive and pleasingly discreet.

Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Braking, Rear Traffic Monitor and Rear Collision Monitor worked together with little intrusion during our drive.

Park Assist, front and rear parking aids and the 3D Surround Camera helped in tighter spaces, while Driver Condition Monitor and Occupant Protection Assist added reassurance.

The systems made themselves useful when required and then quietly receded from the experience. Happily, none seemed particularly desperate for attention.

A MODERN RANGE ROVER, FULLY REALISED The SE left us feeling that the Range Rover formula remains remarkably coherent. There is a great deal of technology beneath the surface, yet the experience remains calm, polished and intuitive.

More importantly, the mild-hybrid system complements the six-cylinder engine, which provides ample reserves when required, while the chassis retains the capability that has always separated Range Rover from less versatile luxury SUVs. That coherence is ultimately what makes the SE so appealing. It feels modern but not novelty-led. It is luxurious but measured, with its capability simply there when needed. It carries the Range Rover idea forward with confidence — and keeps the drinks cold while doing so.

Japanese casual-wear giant UNIQLO continues to put its money where it’s mouth is. In the wake of devastating wildfires in Europe, the company has donated EU1 million along with 50,000 items of clothing to support affected communities in the Gironde and Var regions of France.

The areas have been particularly hard hit and the cash will be split between an agency providing emergency assistance to displaced residents and Sud-Ouest Solidarité, which is supporting firefighters.

The move comes on top of UNIQLO’s numerous other community and sustainability initiatives.

Fashion icon Chanel got in ahead of a European Union ruling to announce it will no longer shred unsold goods, instead sending them to L’Atelier des Matières, its own recycling business.

It had previously been revealed that Chanel Hong Kong was disposing of massive numbers of discontinued products each month – a statement the company disputed saying its practices have evolved.

Instead, the brand put more than EU50 million into developing Nevold, its hub for circular materials to recycle its unwanted products.

In a case of fashion king meets the real thing, legendary designer Paul Smith has joined the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s (STI) Fashion Task Force. STI was founded by the UK’s King Charles III, when he was Prince of Wales, and is a private coalition working to push sustainability across the global fashion and textile industries.

On joining the group, which only admits one new member each year, Ewan Venters, Executive Chairman at Paul Smith, said: “Sustainability and transparency remain key priorities for Paul Smith, and we are committed to continually improving our performance in both areas.”
