Headpieces are super trendy this season, with headbands embellished with shining beads being a popular choice. This Erdem piece is a versatile option; it can be worn on your wedding day and add an eye-catching detail to your everyday outfits.

I DO!

Wedding dresses are the bride’s main concern regarding what to wear, but choosing the perfect add-ons is also part of the show. We bring some ideas!

Nothing says more about a girl’s style than the wedding band she flaunts on her ring finger until ‘death do us part’. Van Cleef & Arpels has a collection of extraordinary diamond jewels like this stunning ring.

Should a bride carry a clutch or not? Well, that is certainly a personal choice. However, if you do opt for one, go for something like this Simone Rocha at FARFETCH mini pearl heart bag – a cute addition to your romantic look.

Humour is a great way to add fun to your wedding day. Sophia Webster offers a wide range of bridal accessories with the ‘Wifey For Lifey’ slogan applied to shoes and clutches – just to put a smile on everyone’s face

Veil or no veil? Made in sheer fabric, they are traditional elements added to the gowns. They date from Roman times and were believed to protect the bride from evil spirits that could ruin her happiness. They also show modesty. This matching veil and dress are from Pronovias Privée. 20

Elegant Timekeeping

For fans of smartwatches and heritage, the new Series 9 bands Apple Watch Hermès marries elegance and sporty style. The Apple-Hermès partnership started in 2015 on the grounds of providing creations that share the same goal of combining function with aesthetics. The bands in webbing, knit and rubber demonstrate meticulous and creative work. Bridon evokes the aesthetic of an equestrian bridle, one of Hermès’ signatures. Toile H & Twill Jump features the two motifs in a webbing weave. Kilim is a waterproof rubber band inspired by Hermès jewellery. Clou de Selle pays homage to the house’s equestrian roots, an ode to their leatherworking expertise. The collection meets the desires of men and women who love beautiful design, cutting-edge technology and high-quality materials.

ICYMI Encounter of Icons

If you are a fashion lover, this partnership is for you. Luxury accessories brand Jimmy Choo collaborates with the French house Jean Paul Gaultier on an exclusive footwear capsule. The collection fuses two creative identities founded on a shared vision of powerful, confident and glamorous femininity. The pieces have been co-designed by the houses’ Creative Directors, Sandra Choi ( Jimmy Choo) and Florence Tétier ( Jean Paul Gaultier), with a strong reference to both names’ archival legacies. Pumps, boots and mules come with eye-catching details highlighting their signatures. The relevance of the two names in the fashion world is undeniable, and seeing them holding hands for a special capsule is exciting news!

100-Year Celebration

Disney continue to mark their 100 milestone with unique collaborations. This time, Christian Louboutin embraces the Marvel universe in a limited-edition footwear and accessories collection for women, men and children. As part of Disney100, the capsule has been launched alongside an exclusive comic book introducing a superhero based on – and co-created by – Christian Louboutin himself. The Infinity Stones plot caught the designer’s attention and was used as inspiration to embed strass into two unique heels for men and women. Namor, the first character ever appearing in a Marvel comic, influenced the reinvention of the Louboutin scales into an exclusive texture known as Spikes Namor. ICYMI East Meets West

KENZO and Levi’s have joined forces and launched a capsule collection, the first-ever collaboration under Nigo, KENZO’s Creative Director, fusing the cultural heritages of the Parisian-Japanese fashion house and the American apparel company. The denim-focused proposal for women and men exemplifies the cross-pollination between historical Japanese dressmaking and classic American workwear. Composed of around 20 garments and accessories crafted mainly in Kaihara premium Japanese denim, the collection epitomises the functionality approach so important to the designer. An avid collector of historical clothing, Nigo’s archives in Japan hold a considerable catalogue of American denim pieces, including original Levi Strauss & Co. workwear created for cowboys and miners. The capsule collection is available at KENZO boutiques worldwide, in selected Levi’s stores and on kenzo.com and levi.com.

Original Creations

Many brands worldwide are affected by product piracy. To detect fake goods, Bosh has created Origify, a solution to identify luxury items using a product-specific optical fingerprint. Origify works with a special camera in a dedicated Origify hardware module. Each piece is captured with one or more images and digitally stored in a reliable cloud. Its digital fingerprint can be retrieved over its entire life cycle, allowing brand manufacturers to identify it without a doubt as long as the product’s surface structure is intact. “Every single item, even in an industrially manufactured series – like a watch’s dial or movement or a handbag or shoe surface structure – has unique features that are not repeated in the series and that we can capture with Origify,” explains Oliver Steinbis, responsible for the project in the Bosch Group. This solution won’t stop counterfeit merchandise but will certify the real deal.

FLYING HIGH

The British jewellers, Garrard are celebrating 20 years of the Wings collection with the launch of Wings Rising – a new chapter in this iconic line. 38

www.ohlalamag.net

JEWELLERY Edit

R

epresenting a new era for the collection, Wings Rising is a significant evolution for this signature motif, launched in 2003. Conceived by Garrard’s all-female design team to speak confidently, woman to woman, Wings Rising takes the quintessential line in an exciting new direction. “The Wings collection has been a Garrard icon for 20 years, and that is cause for celebration. Wings Rising is the boldest representation of the Wings motif yet,” said Sara Prentice, Garrard’s Creative Director. The new designs have been redefined with pieces that emanate tenacity and empower women to rise, fuelled by the force of their own wings. Different from any Wings designs that have come before, these creations add a brand-new identity for this dynamic motif with a bold and free expression. With their graphic, ultramodern silhouettes, the new models take on a fresh symbolism that represents attributes women value in themselves: strength, independence and freedom. Garrard’s designers have updated the lifelike swoop of the original jewels to trace an abstract shape with clean lines and angular feathers. They also wanted to introduce hardstones into the Wings universe and create a brand-new signature. They

have used lapis lazuli shining with golden flecks of naturally occurring pyrite and pink opal alongside more unusual stones such as apple malachite decorated with a polka-dot pattern, golden mother-of-pearl and out-of-this-world meteorites. To capture the movement of a wing in the most unexpected of ways, they experimented with faceting the different hardstones – a technique usually reserved for gemstones. Three limited-edition Wings Rising jewels have been created with rare slices of faceted, metallic grey Gibeon meteorite. Not of this world, this billion-year-old natural wonder from space is believed to have crash-landed on Earth in prehistoric times. Because of its naturally occurring crystalline structure, the crisscrossing patterns are unique in each limited-edition jewel. Other statement Wings Rising pieces are set with angular calibré cut diamonds. The slider pendant and earrings are crafted to deliver subtle articulation, while the ring swoops across two fingers, echoing the original Wings classic design. Mini jewels in polished 18-carat white, yellow or rose gold complete the Wings Rising collection. “Jewellery is one of the most joyful forms of self-expression, and Wings Rising embodies that truth. It lifts you up and gives you the freedom to fly,” concluded Sara.

JEWELLERY Edit

nspired by an archival padlock from 1883, Tiffany Lock is an exceptional expression of the design and craftsmanship characteristic of the brand. It is an ode to the unbreakable bonds that connect us and the infinite power of love. This iconic creation now comes in a delicate version – the Tiffany Lock ROSÉ Edition has pink sapphires playing the main role. The pieces pay homage to the singer’s name and are offered in four styles with 18-carat rose gold and exceedingly rare pink sapphires. One of the rarest coloured gemstones found within the precious sapphire family, these gems were specially chosen as they symbolise love and power. Distinguished by sleek silhouettes, the capsule is offered in a classic Lock bracelet, a pair of earrings and pendants in a small or medium version. “It is such an honour to inspire a capsule collection for Tiffany,” said ROSÉ. “It’s exciting to see the iconic Lock collection reimagined with such rare gemstones and I’m excited to share this fun project with my fans and enthusiasts of the Lock collection.” @tiffanyandco @alfardanjewellery

A Classic

REIMAGINED A quintessential watch only gets better when reconceptualised. The new Tonda PF models come with contemporary details in timeless designs.

HAUTE Horlogerie

T

he Swiss watchmakers Parmigiani Fleurier are wellknown for their restoration know-how and aesthetic cues from the worlds of science, art and architecture. One of their most famous creations is the Tonda PF collection, which is now introducing two new models. The new watches are a two-tone rose gold and steel timepiece (a first for the collection) and a rose gold model with a ruby dial now coming with an alligator strap in the same shade. They play on contrasting colours and precious materials designed with the Tonda PF Automatic underlying spirit of refinement and elegant minimalism. Both are presented in a 36mm case for slimmer wrists. GOLD ENCOUNTERS STEEL The brand’s first Tonda PF Automatic in two-tone rose gold and steel posed a stylistic challenge: how to incorporate a contemporary two-tone look without jeopardising the innate discretion of this collection. The solution was to use the precious metal to enhance certain architectural traits of the case and bracelet. The finely knurled bezel of the Tonda PF is recreated

in 18-carat rose gold, and the supple integrated bracelet features rose gold links that accentuate its profile. POP OF COLOUR The rose gold, ruby dial Tonda PF Automatic 36mm is a sleek, minimalist timepiece now reimagined with a beautiful, rich ruby alligator strap – reproducing the glamorous tone in the dial. The Tonda PF Automatic, 36mm models mirror the aesthetics and technical mastery of the larger 40mm Tonda PF MicroRotor in a more compact case size. However, they are not equipped with a date window. With nothing superfluous to obstruct the view, the Grain d’Orge hand-guilloché decoration on the dial and the fine yet scintillating baguette-cut diamond hour markers command the attention. The two timepieces underline the versatile nature of the Tonda PF collection. They are the perfect companion to enhance ladies’ and gents’ wrists from day to night, business to leisure – they are models that validate Parmigiani Fleurier’s approach to Haute Horlogerie.

he famous shoemaker has been exploring the beauty world since 2014 with bold collections for lips, nails and eyes. The two new products that recently joined the Christian Louboutin Beauty family are Teint Fétiche Le Baume De Teint and Teint Fétiche Le Baume 4 Couleurs – an ode to flawless complexions. Teint Fétiche Le Baume De Teint is a foundation, a concealer and a balm. The texture is light and buttery soft for a promise of 12-hour comfort. It glides onto the skin in a silky light veil for an imperceptible second skin, offering natural coverage. The formula relies on an exclusive Dermaglam complex, a unique mix containing ceramides and Centella Asiatica leaf extract for comfort and long-term hydration. And because good make-up needs a perfect base, precious crystal quartz fine powder has been added to the composition for a longlasting, non-fading finish. Teint Fétiche Le Baume 4 Couleurs is a colour corrector that has been created to tackle dark circles, scarring and pigmentation. It can bring rebalancing to all types of tonal variation, with four correcting colours – all you need to cover pigmentation irregularities. A REJUVENATING

JOURNEY Deep cleanse and hydration met Laura Morris’ complexion at ESPA, Mondrian Doha.

SPA

Spotlight

I

have long pondered over the words I could use to describe ESPA at Mondrian Doha, which would best capture its essence: whimsical, tranquil and immersive came to mind. However, I think I’ll settle with extraordinary. When entering the space, it seemed as if I was stepping into an alternative realm, transcending the mundane and embarking on an odyssey of pure serenity and revelation. The spa is an opulent sanctuary where the interplay of space and illumination unveils an oasis of respite. Like stepping through Alice’s looking glass or jumping into a chalk painting from a scene in Mary Poppins, I pushed through the ornate wooden doors of the magical wonderland spa, and I was immediately transported into a world of enchantment and luxury. The first thing that caught my eye was the stunning rose mosaic floors that sprawl across the expansive space – their intricate patterns captivated me with their beauty. It felt like I had entered a secret garden filled with the vibrant colours and fragrant scents of blooming roses. I next discovered the crystal showers, set against a wall of glistening gems, each delivering a refreshing cascade of water that sparkled in the soft light. Suspended from the ceiling by delicate chains, hanging seats beckoned me to sit and sway gently. I could almost imagine myself soaring, free from the worries and stresses of the outside world! How was I in a busy city only minutes before? Moving forward, I found myself in the heart of the spa. A chamber that seems to have been plucked right out of a fairytale is a giant pearl room, which is a sight to behold. As I ventured further into this paradise, my eyes were drawn to the day beds overlooking the water. They are dressed with pristine white cushions and are so inviting that it’s impossible to resist sinking into their soft embrace! I stayed there for a moment to take it all in. Before my treatment started, I also made good use of the facilities; I went to the steam room to calm my mind after a busy day.

My therapist, Rabina, introduced herself and guided me towards my treatment room. I was booked for the Dermalux Facial, designed to repair and revitalise the skin in a non-invasive way. The procedure uses light therapy fused with the remarkable prowess of ESPA’s natural skincare products. Rabina was very knowledgeable about the process and products and talked to me about how my skin would feel and look after my 90-minute session. The treatment commenced once I was comfortable on the bed and, as facials often do, it started with a cleanse. Rabina applied the Tri-Active Resilience Detox and Purify Cleanser, and I was immersed in a luxurious sensory experience. Like a nurturing caress, the lush, silky texture transforms into a lipid-rich oil, removing the day’s impurities. The scent, a delightful blend of Orpin rose extract and neroli oil, awakened my senses. This ritual felt more than just cleansing; it was a nurturing shield against environmental challenges. Once my freshened face was rinsed, a UV-light device was used to analyse my skin type. I found this fascinating; for the first time, I was being comprehensively consulted on the complexities of my skin and the differences in key areas. Rabina used this information to formulate a plan for the remainder of my facial, deciding which ESPA products would serve me best and leave me with the ultimate result – such a personalised touch. For the next stage, exfoliation, ESPA Refining Skin Polish. I could sense the exfoliator’s super-fine texture, gently clearing my pores and removing impurities. The massage felt like a soothing dance and, when it was rinsed, my skin was already feeling smoother, revealing a more radiant complexion. The soft scent came from rose Damascena and shea butter. I learned quickly that the ESPA products all smell delightfully natural.

54

www.ohlalamag.net

At this stage of the facial, a steam machine was used to open my pores to be thoroughly cleaned and more stubborn impurities removed. This was one of the highlights; a deep clean was my focus, and Rabina worked hard to remove even the toughest of blocked pores. During the process, she made sure I was not uncomfortable. To treat my skin after this step and to add much-needed hydration, she applied the Overnight Hydration Therapy, which comes in the form of a mask, delicately spreading it before the LED light treatment began. The mask’s luxurious formula glided effortlessly, leaving my face feeling cocooned in a blanket of replenishment and radiance. The experience was not just about the physical touch but also the aromatic embrace. The comforting scents of cedarwood and lavender added an extra layer of relaxation. As the mask worked its magic, I was treated to an indulgent foot massage. The final part of my treatment included another cleanse plus toning and moisturising. The crowning jewel to end my facial treatment was the Tri-Active Resilience Pro-Biome Serum, which embraced my skin. The serum boasts a blend of potent natural ingredients that aim to leave the complexion with a new-found radiance. My skin came back to life with a sense of renewed resilience and vitality. It was the perfect conclusion to a facial, leaving me with a feeling of restored beauty and strength. As I emerged from the experience, I instantly noticed my skin purified, soothed and calmed with moisture. This indulgent facial experience was nothing short of extraordinary, with visible enhancements to my skin health unfolding before my eyes. My newly restored complexion and I won’t be able to resist another session soon! E

forea Spa at the Hilton Doha sits calmly at the back of the grand building on the lower level and aims to provide a sanctuary for all who visit to emerge brighter. Part of Hilton’s worldwide spa brand, eforea offers a wide range of therapies, including facials, massages and body treatments, and today was my turn to sample their offering; it’d been a busy time, and I couldn’t wait to get ‘Zen’. As I descended the stairs and looked out to the sea, the journey to relaxation started before I had even stepped into the calming space. As I entered the spa, I was immediately struck by the sense of elegance and tranquillity that surrounded me. The first thing that caught my eye was the pristine white walls, which created an atmosphere of freshness and purity. The clean scent that hung in the air only enhanced this feeling, making me feel instantly relaxed. As I made my way through the spa, I noticed how the central staircase served as a focal point, guiding me towards the various treatment rooms. The corridors gently curved, inviting me to explore further into the depths of this serene oasis. Each treatment room was thoughtfully named after flowers such as orchid and lily. Soft, low-level lighting bathed the

entire space, casting a warm glow that wrapped around me like a comforting blanket. This subdued illumination created a calming ambience, allowing me to fully unwind and let go of the stresses of the outside world. To further enhance the harmonious environment, the gentle sounds of nature played softly in the background. The tinkling of waterfalls and the soft rustle of leaves transported me to a place of peace and serenity. As someone well-versed in the world of spa treatments, I was in for a revelation – my first hot stone massage! Embarking on the indulgent journey of a Volcanic Stone Massage, I entered a realm of pure tranquillity and escape from the chaos of daily life, seeking 50 minutes of pure bliss. As I lay down, cocooned in the soft embrace of a clean cotton sheet, my therapist, Panjali, hailing from Eastern India, extended a warm welcome, instantly putting me at ease with her soft-spoken and friendly demeanour. The experience unfolded with a delicate touch as Panjali expertly applied the perfect amount of pressure to my back and legs. The massage oil, with its mild and inviting fragrance, felt both light and warm against my skin. But the true stars of this treatment were the Balinese stones infused with exotic spices, which came to life in her skilled hands.

The sensation was like no other as Panjali glided the warm stones across my body, replicating the soothing sensation of running water caressing my fatigued muscles. Deep within the massage, Frangipani Monoi Body Oil was gently worked into my muscles, unravelling the knots of deep tension. The comforting warmth of the stones lulled me into a gentle slumber, allowing me to surrender my senses to complete relaxation. The journey commenced with a focus on my back, with stones thoughtfully placed, followed by a meticulous massage of my legs and feet. The therapist’s skilled hands then navigated to my back and shoulders, incorporating stretches that released tension promoting profound relaxation. The stones were held with precision, offering a unique and therapeutic touch. I was gently turned over to continue the ritual on my front. Starting with my feet and progressing to my legs, arms and hands, every area was lovingly tended to. With each stroke and every placement of the heated stones, I was transported to a world of unparalleled tranquillity, where worries fade into distant memories. This Volcanic Stone Massage is nothing short of a sensory masterpiece, a symphony of relaxation that

Spotlight will linger in my memory. To conclude the spa treatment, the experience culminated in a delightfully invigorating scalp massage. This brief yet exquisite touch offered the perfect finishing flourish, where skilled hands worked magic on my scalp, leaving me with a sense of renewed energy and a tingling sensation of relaxation. It was the crowning jewel in an already indulgent spa journey, ensuring that every last trace of tension dissipated, and I left feeling thoroughly rejuvenated. I stepped into a serene, inviting, quiet room, a sanctuary of repose where the worries of the outside world melted away. Soft, ambient lighting gently bathed the space, creating a soothing atmosphere. Plush, comfortable seating beckoned me

to unwind, and a subtle fragrance of essential oils lingered in the air, enhancing the relaxation. As I settled in, a steaming cup of green tea was presented, its delicate aroma mingling with the peaceful ambience, inviting me to savour the moments of calm and reflection after my rejuvenating treatment. All spa guests are invited to reward themselves with some tranquil time in the eucalyptus steam room, rainfall shower, sauna, Jacuzzi and relaxation lounge accessible from the changing areas. In all, it’s fair to say my visit to eforea was a sensory delight. The combination of the fresh and inviting layout, the calming atmosphere and the attention to detail in every aspect made this spa experience truly exceptional.

HERE COMES

THE BRIDE The wedding season is open – it’s time to dive into the world of stunning dresses and white accessories.

T

he weather is getting cooler, and we can already hear the tintinnabulation of the bells. The wedding day is mostly dedicated to the star of the show: the bride! To celebrate the dame of the day, we bring the latest trends in wedding dresses and shoes. Choosing the right gown for yourself (or helping someone pick theirs) is an important task. They will be immortalised in pictures and everyone’s memories. Here are some tips that can guide you in selecting the perfect number: • Shop early but not too early. This tactic will give you time to explore all possibilities. • Stick to your/the bride’s personality. If you like low-key styles, look for dresses that have this characteristic. However, opt for an elaborate dress if you have a bubbly nature. You can also see this event as your red carpet-moment. If so, go big with no regrets!

72

www.ohlalamag.net

• Consider the location of your celebration. For events in hotels and closed spaces, pick a dress with a train and embellishments – they need to be as grand as your reception. If you have a garden celebration, A-line or mermaid silhouettes with lace details would be spot on. For a beach wedding, consider the wind and heat, so go for a flowy and light gown. A tulle skirt will look amazing on a sunny day. • If you are not getting ready at the venue, opt for a fabric that travels well and won’t end up all wrinkly. • Choose the height of your heels before selecting your dress. • Practice sitting, walking and dancing in your dress. If you don’t plan to wear something different during the party, go for something comfortable. • Look for details that will highlight your best assets but also something that will look good in photos – these are the things that will guard the memories of this special day. Posing with your dress is a clever way to see how it will look in the photos and unlock the best angles. In the following pages, you will find inspirational gowns!

Ball gowns are the preferred style for extra drama and fairytale weddings. However, when thinking of volume, it doesn’t have to be applied only to skirts. Wedding dresses using lace as the main material are a timeless choice. Brides can opt for a full lace dress for an extra feminine touch or apply the textile to strategic places for an adorning effect. Remember that lace and beads work well together if you want extra glamour.

TULLE TOUCH Dresses made with layers of tulle are graceful and sophisticated. The delicate fabric creates a soft, dreamy effect that complements various dress silhouettes. When thinking of tulle, voluminous gowns must come to mind, but not necessarily. A simple neutral base can be the background for this sheer textile – when folded in intricate ways, it can create an intriguing effect. www.ohlalamag.net

It’s easy to impress when the dress is over the top – volume, frills and lace contribute to a jawdropping reaction. However, many women prefer to go with the less is more motto. A plain, satin fabric will deliver this effect. But that does not mean you can’t invest in an exciting silhouette with an eye-catching detail or smart cut.

Lengths of fabric at the back of a dress add a grand effect to any gown – they can be super long or just a bit below the hem at the back. BEYOND

BEAUTY This month, we had the pleasure of interviewing Sarah Wanas, the holder of the Ms. Egypt 2023 title. An Egyptian national, she lives in Qatar and tells us her story.

www.ohlalamag.net

“It’s not only about beauty it’s about your personality. Your problem-solving skills, patience and resilience.” — Sarah Wanas OHLALA – Please tell us a bit about your background story in terms of career. Sarah Wanas – I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts and Fashion Design. After graduation, I worked as a business developer for four years in one of the biggest retail projects in Alhazm Doha. Later, I worked in AbuIssa Holding as their head of marketing for the whole group. This consisted of one of the first luxury department stores in Doha (Blue Salon) and at least 90 stores offering different retail products and categories also specialised in fine jewellery and fashion labels. I also worked for Alfardan Jewellery as their head of marketing. I am very passionate about my career, particularly jewellery. I have been to exhibitions everywhere in the world for jewellery. OHLALA – What made you decide to compete as Ms. Egypt? How did you feel when you won the title? Sarah – I had always been watching the show from a very young age. I wanted to join the contest a long time ago, but I was married and could not qualify due to my marital status. However, after separating from my husband, I could compete as a single mum and won the title. I have worked very hard for this, and it was very demanding to balance work, my daughter and the competition and finally win. I feel I’m changing the mindset in the Arabic world. Being 30, I am still very young, yet I was the oldest of the beauty pageant contestants and the only single mum. OHLALA – Beauty pageant competitions are frequently seen as events just about beauty. For you, what do they really mean? What message did you want to spread by participating in one? Sarah – It’s not only about beauty it’s about your personality. Your problem-solving skills, patience and resilience. The competition taught me a lot, particularly the Chairwoman of Ms. Egypt, Dr Amaal Rezk. She is an inspiration, a true leader. Being a single mother was a path of empowerment for me. It’s not easy to be the only person in the house in charge of the family. Responsibility at work and managing to achieve dreams that require time, effort and work are also part of it. The fact that I’m running solo without a partner made me learn to love my life and myself without that part in my life.

OHLALA – Now that you hold this title, what do you intend to do with it? Do you feel that it is a powerful tool to empower women? If so, how will you do that? Sarah – What I will do, and not just plan on doing, is to work with philanthropy and charities. I want to shed light on awareness of child psychological abuse. What really ruins someone’s future and their view on life has a lot to do with childhood trauma. I also want to focus on orphanages, abandoned children and the difficult process of adoption and guardianship. I had a tough experience trying to adopt after I had my daughter. This process should be approachable and more convenient for our world today. Many mums and families wish to grow their families and give love and new homes to children who deserve a great life. Women’s empowerment is another topic. Many of us struggle to make ends meet, struggle to shine in a man’s world and, most importantly, many do not have the mindset of real women’s empowerment. I want to get involved in workshops that focus on developing leadership skills and independence. I also want to spread the word for the Ms. and Mrs Egypt competition to be internationally recognised. OHLALA – You live in Qatar. What do you like most about living here? Sarah – Qatar is my home, where I grew up and was raised. No matter where I go and how long I stay, I always go back to my home. I love Qatar dearly.

SAADIYAT ISLAND

I

must confess that when the invitation to travel to Saadiyat Island came to my inbox, I had no idea where or what it was. After some quick research, I discovered it was most definitely a place to be visited. Located in Abu Dhabi between the city centre and Yas Island and only 20km from the airport, Saadiyat Island is a naturally occurring islet, home to pristine white sandy beaches, azure waters and a vast range of wildlife, such as fast gazelles and Hawksbill sea turtles, co-habiting with culture, leisure and luxury. The meaning of its name is happiness, and it didn’t take long for me to understand why. Sustainability is quite a trend, but at Saadiyat Island, this concept is taken extremely seriously. No motorsports are allowed, no plastic straws are used

in restaurants, biodegradable guest amenities (one innovative solution is cornstarch-based) have been implemented, and a series of tactics is in place to entirely eliminate plastic bottles (some hotels gift their guests with stylish reusable water bottles), amongst other initiatives. LUSH STAY The island offers six luxurious resorts to choose from: Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas, Rixos Premium, Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and Nurai Island. I stayed at Jumeirah and the laid-back luxury flair, something that this brand knows well, was easily felt as soon as I walked in. www.ohlalamag.net

LIVING SPACE JUMEIRAH AT SAADIYAT ISLAND LOBBY

BATHROOM

The ample lobby is bright and faces the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf. Hanging from the ceiling, hand-blown blue Bohemian crystals in the shape of jellyfish and water droplets (with more than 100 of them) seemed like an extension of the sea – an immense and lovely installation. The décor was minimal, with comfy sofas and tables in blue and sandy colours, exactly what you want when looking for a beach resort – modern sophistication without over-the-top furnishing. My first impression of the hotel regarding their staff couldn’t have been better. Ahmed, the front desk agent, welcomed me with a big smile and helped me with a smooth check-in and a comprehensive explanation of the hotel facilities. He then asked lovely Deisy, one of the concierges, to help me find my room; she also showed me how to use all the modern accessories. My room was the Ocean One Bedroom Suite on the same floor as the lobby. It had a big living space with two balconies, an ample sofa and a round dining table. A big sliding panel separated this area from the bedroom, composed of a comfy king-size bed, a round lounger (circular elements are one of the latest trends in interior design), a coffee machine and all the expected amenities. The bathroom had a big tub, two sinks and, to my delight, a rain shower. But if you are looking for extreme luxury, you can stay in one of the private villas. They come in two, three, four and five bedrooms, all with their own pool and outside space for gatherings. At this property, you also find a welcoming 24-hour gym with Technogym equipment and a spa offering 15 treatment rooms with one of the largest Hammam facilities in the city.

JUMEIRAH AT SAADIYAT ISLAND POOL WHITE RESTAURANT

REGIONAL

Escapes

Jumeirah offers delectable eateries, and I noticed that not only hotel guests but outside diners also go there to enjoy the high-end restaurant options. I dined in three of them: Mare Mare, offering an Italian menu; Tean, dedicated to Levantine cuisine; and White, where breakfast (with one of the most expansive spreads I have ever encountered, from freshly prepared pancakes and flaky pastries to an exciting avocado toast station and refined cold cuts selection such as beef bresaola and smoked pepper mackerel. I would go back just for that!), brunch and dinner buffets are available. The quality of ingredients and beautiful presentation was consistent in all of them. However, if I have to highlight only two things about Jumeirah, it would be its well-trained and amazing staff and the beach. I could live there! The pristine water, white fluffy sand, comfortable sun loungers and refreshing water brought in cute mini coolers would be enough to keep me happy for days. DINING SCENE I guess one of the best places to find an array of restaurants would be the Mamsha al Saadiyat promenade. We went there for a walk to embrace this amazing beachfront community and to have lunch in a place that I can securely say has to be the best Lebanese restaurant that I have ever eaten at in my life: Beirut Sur Mer. The eatery is located at Mamsha al Saadiyat and has impressive colourful décor with arches in the ceiling covered with vine-style branches and chandeliers where pinkish faux grapes embrace the light bulbs. The walls are covered with delicate flowered wallpaper, while the blue and pink counter and chairs and white tiled walls give a cohesive effect to the whole layout. Lively and absolutely stunning ambience. I am glad we were in a group, and we got to try a variety of sharing dishes. Hummus, tabbouleh, moutabal, olives, fattoush, kibbeh nayyeh (raw meat with spices served in a ball shape) and my favourite, Maltouteh – www.ohlalamag.net

cured yoghurt, thyme, pistachios, fried olives, dried cranberries, hazelnuts, walnuts and mint, mixed with soft bread, it was a mouthful of soft and crunchy textures with a unique explosion of flavours. We also had Sawda, a popular chicken liver dish that at Beirut Sur Mer is sautéed and made with the restaurant’s special fig salsa with molasses. The other meat option was the Basha Bil Karaz composed of grilled kofta on a cherry chutney salsa. The perfect marriage of ingredients is definitely a strong trait in this restaurant and what makes this place a must-try. The sweets were Kunafa, with its stretchy cheese filling and semolina dough, accompanied by Pashmak, the Middle Eastern cotton candy; Millefuille Beiruty made with crispy phyllo dough and clotted cream; and, the best of them all, Halawat El Jibin or sweet cheese rolls, it was my first time trying them, and they were not overly sweet with a soft texture and a touch of pistachio crunchiness. For French cuisine enthusiasts, La Salle, located at Saadiyat Beach Club, offers a high-end experience. The menu also includes Italian and Spanish staples for a sophisticated Mediterranean feast. We had a delightful lunch at this eatery. Our starters were Arancini, the popular fried rice balls filled with cheese that at La Salle have a Sicilian influence with saffron. They were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, yum! The Crevette Pil Pil is a simple Spanish dish composed of Carabinero prawns and smoked Pil Pil sauce (made with garlic and chilli infused in hot olive oil). However, the star appetiser was the Aubergine à la Parmesane with layers of aubergine, ricotta, cheese and tomato sauce – a creamy combination that melted in my mouth, absolutely delicious! My main course was Le Risotto Acquarello, my go-to comfort food, made with mushrooms, truffle oil, pecorino foam and peas. The risotto rice was cooked to perfection and the right amount of truffle oil was added for a beautiful spoonful. The texture was velvety, and the flavours were spot on.

ABRAHAMIC FAMILY HOUSE SAADIYAT BEACH GOLF CLUB

THINGS TO DO So, as you can see, Saadiyat Island is the perfect destination for a resortlike holiday and excellent food. However, that’s not even the best part: the unique cultural district is home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Abrahamic Family House and Manarat Al Saadiyat, offering exciting artistic expressions and an educational vision. With more to come, such as the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opening in 2025. Our visit to Louvre Abu Dhabi was supervised by Vivian, a super energetic guide who took us to the key pieces on display at the museum, telling us their stories and highlighting fun facts. It was not my first time, but I can say that this visit was way more interesting. The Abrahamic Family House is a centre that promotes dialogue and knowledge exchange with peaceful coexistence at its core. Designed by wellknown Ghanaian-British architect David Adjaye, it consists of a church, a

mosque and a synagogue. The three houses of worship are the same size, but each carries their unique symbols in the architecture. There is an exhibit that showcases videos of the different expressions of faith; they touched me more than I expected and left me with a deep sense of reflection. Manarat Al Saadiyat is a contemporary space that's home to exhibitions, events, workshops and an art studio – an ample area where art and its expressions are celebrated. If a cultural scene is not what you are looking for, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club offers a fun experience for those who want to learn the game or for old hands who wish to play on the club’s 18-hole course or driving range. Our little entourage was invited for a session with Matt, one of the golf coaches. Well-humoured, he asked us to hit the little ball with the club giving our best performance. He then gave us some tips and, to my surprise, the simple technique he asked us to use made a big difference. I actually hit the ball with enough strength to make it roll away. I was so proud of myself that I am considering starting to play. If you are looking for a fun activity, I highly recommend it. Besides having two restaurants, La Salle and Safina, the Saadiyat Beach Club also offers an array of facilities, such as an infinity pool, white-sand beach, gym, plunge pool, Jacuzzi and gents’ salon. You can purchase a day pass and enjoy the party atmosphere. If you are looking for a weekend getaway, planning a nearby honeymoon or even just fancy going somewhere extraordinary but do not want to spend too many hours in a plane, Saadiyat Island is the perfect destination. It has it all and a little more. For more information, please visit https://saadiyatisland.ae/ @saadiyatae

f there were an award for most magnificent hotel entrance in the world, in my opinion, The St. Regis Doha would surely be a contender. I never fail to be wowed by its pure spectacle – and as we glide past the towering oryx and ascend the grand, sweeping drive – this evening proves to be no different. Tonight, we’re en route to Astor Grill, where we’ll be sampling their new dishes. Taste buds at the ready, we step into the majestic lobby, pivot left and get ready to find out more. Astor Grill is a truly classy wilderness. Imagine Inca-patterned walls, terracotta pots overflowing with backlit greenery, dancing flames and a bold, zigzag-striped floor. And that’s only the entrance. We’re led deeper inside, past the chilled cabinet of aged meat and the open kitchen that sparkles with copper cookware, until we reach probably the most perfectly designed restaurant ever. Dark hues of mahogany and roasted coffee are interspersed with lusciously leafy plants; they sprout all around and trail lazily from above. Low-level woven screens ensure that no one feels overlooked, yet every cosy corner is still a part of this buzzy and convivial restaurant. Executive Chef Motaz Zayed’s reimagined menu is as unique as the décor while adhering to the elements of Astor Grill: dry-aged, smoked and steak. We’re served by the wonderful Rashid, who begins with an amuse bouche that encapsulates these elements in one delicious mouthful. It’s a vol-au-vent – a dainty cube of pastry filled with smoked burrata and dryaged beef. Next, it’s a quartet of mini brioches with the smokiest, silkiest pickled aubergine mash. Both dishes are delicious.

There’s a swathe of intriguing and imaginative starters, so diverse that there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone. The Astor Salad harks back to a classic Caesar but with smoked duck breast and asparagus, featuring a mini iceberg lettuce redolent of coal. (Trust me. It works.) The Fried Wagu Wontons are so crispy, filled with minced beef and served with a barbecued soy and sesame sauce dotted with dried nori and edamame. They’re crunchy and soft and incredibly flavoursome. Meanwhile, I would seriously travel the length of Qatar for the Seabass Ceviche, which is served with wasabi leaves and horseradish aioli. But there’s also the Warm Octopus Carpaccio made with octopus rings, a constellation of chives, pickled peppers, micro leaves, blackened croutons and smoked aubergine tartare finish the dish. Senior mixologist Kev brings an Astor Mule mocktail in a glistening copper mug, where cinnamon and mint burst out of a heap of crushed ice. The drink arrives in a French press, which he plunges before pouring over the ice. The beverage is created using lime juice, ginger, spices, bay leaves and brown sugar and is highly recommended. And there are many more showstoppers to choose from. I can’t think of a better way of showcasing Astor Grill’s beloved Josper charcoal oven than the mains on skewers. From the Charcoaled CornFed Chicken and the Atlantic White Fish to the Coffee-Rubbed Flank Steak and the melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu Ribeye, each is a masterpiece. A selection of sauces is the perfect accompaniment. The Astor sauce is piquant and delicious, while I simply adore the Roquefort with its depth of flavour and unbelievable unctuousness. Special mention must go to the bubbling Corn, Spinach Parmigiano Gratin, Broccoli and Mushroom Pot. And what is a steak without perfectly cooked and seasoned hand-cut

French fries? There’s no need to wonder because they’re on the menu too. Executive Chef Motaz Zayed explains that “elements of fire, wood and charcoal” feature throughout his menu. He’s obviously very proud of the theme and so he should be. While these elements provide a rich seam of flavour, they never overwhelm. Desserts arrive in a bubbling mist of dry ice. Profiterole Noir juxtaposes smoky choux pastry with citrussy orange yoghurt ice cream in a new and entirely Astor-tastic way. Charcoaled Cheese Cake continues the theme. The Coffee Explosion is pure theatre – when coffee cremeux is poured through a chocolate lid, a seething swirl of grilled hazelnut biscuit and espresso ganache is created below. And if that’s not your thing, then there are The St. Regis bespoke ice creams and sorbets that you won’t find anywhere else. If I may, I’d like to recommend the Coffee First. On Thursday and Friday evenings, there’s live music that – like the dryaged steak – is a cut above the rest. Never intrusive, always funky and from South American electronica to Bob Marley and jazz vibes, the music from the incredibly accomplished band creates the perfect backdrop. As the sparkling lights of the Pearl glisten in the distance, we sip coffee and decide that, with genuinely engaging and expert staff, a lively atmosphere, superb music and, above all, culinary excellence, Astor Grill has it all. John Jacob Astor – who founded the very first St. Regis in New York City in 1904 and after whom Astor Grill was named – would be proud. THE EPITOME OF

LUXURY

OHLALA RECENTLY EXPERIENCED A NEW CHAPTER FOR MERCEDES-BENZ WHEN OUT AND ABOUT IN THE 2023 EQS 450 SUV.

I

t's no secret that Mercedes-Benz has been actively expanding its EQ range, recently adding its first all-electric premium SUV to its ever-growing list of battery-powered creations. Thanks to the team at Nasser Bin Khaled Mercedes-Benz, OHLALA recently had the opportunity to test drive this new high-end model. SLEEK EXTERIOR The first time we laid eyes on the 2023 EQS SUV, we were struck by its highly innovative design. Emphasis has been placed on functionality and aerodynamics, combined with avant-garde aesthetics. We felt the result to be an unmistakably purposeful design reflected by its dynamic proportions, generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. The first element to demand our attention at the front end was the Black Panel unit. This combination of several front features, including the digital lights, is connected by a light band and the deep black radiator grille that come together to form the face. From side on, the aerodynamic efficiency of the exterior design became even more apparent. Gently tracing our hands along the surface, we appreciated the round front end that flows dynamically over the steeply raked A-pillar and the roof contour to the rear spoiler. We recognised

how the C-pillar's far back positioning accentuated the generous interior and admired the three-dimensional chrome strip framing the side window surfaces. Shifting our focus to the back end, we were impressed at how seamlessly the tailgate merges into the bumper, along with the elaborately designed interior of the LED lights. The elements of the taillights have the shape of a curved 3D helix and, combined with the light band, result in an unmistakable light signature. SPACIOUS INTERIOR Tearing our collective attention away from the captivating nature of the exterior, we slipped into the cabin to be greeted by an equally stunning interior. Initially grabbing our attention was the luxurious nature of the SUV, in part due to the premium materials used throughout. Equally as impressive to us was the abundance of space on offer. Due to its generous dimensions, the EQS provides ample head, shoulder, elbow and leg room in both the front and rear with seating for up to five occupants to travel in ultimate comfort. We were informed that among the numerous optional extras available for the EQS SUV is a third-seat row, with two additional individual seats that fold up from the load floor.

"Emphasis has been placed on functionality and aerodynamics, combined with avant-garde aesthetics."

Additionally, the sizeable luggage compartment offers 645 litres of storage space, a capacity increased to 880 litres with the electronically adjustable second row moved forward and 2,100 litres with the rear seating folded flat. CUTTING-EDGE INFOTAINMENT & TECH The EQS SUV houses the second-generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX). This system, with its adaptive software, sports a zero-layer design, meaning it wasn't necessary for us to scroll through submenus or give voice commands. Depending on the immediate situation, applications were offered on the top level in the field of view, thereby relieving us of numerous operating steps. We also must mention the premium infotainment system imbued with artificial intelligence (AI), capable of delivering context-sensitive awareness. We found this intuitive system easy to operate via the upgraded 'Hey Mercedes' voice assistant. Although we appreciated many internal features, including the Dolby Atmos immersive sound system and the optional Head-Up Display, the MBUX Hyperscreen was hands down our favourite internal component of the EQS. This expansive and curved unit looks like something out of a spaceship, stretching almost from A-pillar to A-pillar. It consists of three displays merging almost seamlessly into one another to create an impressive screen band over 141cm wide. We discovered this feature offers intuitive touch operation with haptic and force feedback.

96

www.ohlalamag.net

Despite the wide-ranging functionality of this AI-driven feature, it was its ability to change the inner mood of the car that impressed us the most. There are several moods to select from, all offering an immersive experience. For example, when selecting the forest setting, all inner lighting of the vehicle changed to green and the sound system played woodland noises – a truly phenomenal feature. ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE Our all-wheel-drive EQS 450 4Matic was equipped with the standard electric drive train on the rear axle plus one on the front, with the Torque Shift function intelligently and continuously distributing the drive torque between the two. Both electric motors are permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM), receiving energy from a lithium-ion, 108.4kWh battery that delivers a range of up to 500km when fully charged. We found this setup to provide a responsive and smooth experience, with the artificial engine sounds proving to be almost as good as the real thing. This surprisingly potent powertrain has a max power output of 265kW and produces 800Nm of torque. After being pressed back into our seats, we advise all would-be EQS owners not to push the accelerator too hard! This SUV is scarily fast. It does, however, come with adaptive air suspension, a remarkable braking system and no less than five driving modes to ensure a comfortable and safe driving experience in all conditions. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz's inclusion of a full-suite of driver assistance features meant we travelled with absolute peace of mind. For more information or to book a luxury SUV test drive of your own, please call Nasser Bin Khaled Mercedes-Benz on 4462 4444. @nbkmercedesbenz

GOOD LUCK!

Weddings are full of customs and conventions, and some of us take them very seriously. We bring a list of the most popular and not-so-well-known myths and their reasons. If you are a superstitious person, it’s good to take a look at this list to make sure you start your wedded life on the ‘right foot’. But if you aren’t, you can read this compilation of fun facts to understand some of the traditions. • Most of us think that rain on a festive day is something negative (in the Middle East, it would be extra unlucky as it rarely pours in this part of the world), but it is said that rain on a wedding day is a sign of luck. It cleanses paths, renews nature and symbolises fertility. • This is a very unusual one, but folklore says that if you find a spider crawling on your wedding dress, it means that you will have a successful and prosperous marriage. • One of the oldest traditions followed by most people to this day, is that the groom shouldn’t see the bride before the wedding as it can bring bad luck. This custom is believed to have originated when arranged marriages were a common practice. It was feared that if the groom saw the bride, he could change his mind and run away. 98

www.ohlalamag.net

• The belief behind showering newlyweds with rice is that it would bring fertility to the couple. Nowadays, the tradition persists, but instead of rice, dried flower petals or bubbles serve as a good eco-friendly option. • In some cultures, wearing pearls on your wedding day is said to bring misfortune. They are seen as tears of the sea, which is directly connected to sadness – hence not a good omen – mainly if they are part of the wedding ring. • Why do most celebrations have bridesmaids? To confuse and deter jealous spirits. Historically, they would also wear white to mislead the evil presence and keep the bride safe. • Not sure what to get your friends for their wedding? No matter what, stay away from knives (even if the couple loves cooking together); they are a sign of bad luck as they represent broken relationships. • And last one: wedding rings are worn on the third finger of the left hand because Ancient Romans believed that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart. They even called it vena amoris (vein of love), but this vein doesn’t really exist.
