Editor’s Letter
There are some things that we can't possibly change, and time is one of them. Time will continue passing whether we like it or not. What we can do is keep track of it in style. Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023, one of the biggest fairs dedicated to timepieces, happened last month, and the OHLALA team went there again this year to check it out. We share with you some of the new pieces we liked most. Our fashion pages are full of inspiring summer trends, and we focus on the eyes with a new serum and mascara in our beauty pages. This month's pampering session happened at Saray Spa at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel. We headed there for a delightful Moroccan Hammam Bath. We can't control time, but we can make our homes more sustainable to reduce our carbon footprint. Check out our homes pages to learn more about how and get to know about some cool green projects. Travelling is back in full force and we went once again to Türkiye – this time, we stayed at Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus, Istanbul. And, as we’re fans of all things luxurious and exclusive, we’ve made a list of the poshest hotels in the world. Check it out to start dreaming about your next escape.
We also dined on Lebanese delicacies at BeBabel, located at The St. Regis Doha, and drove the incredible new Maserati Grecale.
I hope you enjoy your reading!

Your paradise destination will be filled with sun rays – on top of wearing sunscreen, don’t forget your sunglasses. These are from Victoria Beckham
Summer dresses are best paired with sandals. Tory Burch’s footwear collection has various cute espadrille wedges that will complement your wanderlust wardrobe beautifully.
Handbags made with natural materials such as raffia and straw speak summer out loud. They are spacious and usually very light, which makes them the perfect carrier. Max Mara and many other brands have a gorgeous selection. Colourful dresses in lightweight materials such as cotton are the best pick to take you from a casual stroll to a dinner under the stars with one of nature’s best soundtrack: waves. Add a hat and chunky accessories for more pizzazz. La DoubleJ summer collection ticks all boxes.

NATURE CALLS
Forget basic, sometimes boring flower prints and opt for abstract floral and foliage motifs. To reinforce the theme, paint your pieces in vivid green. You can also feature colourful birds on them and embrace a forest look.
STYLE Trends
Stripes are pretty popular during the warm months of the year. However, this season, avoid those coming in an array of hues and go for two contrasting colours. They can be vertical or horizontal in thick – if you want a bolder effect – or thin lines.

BUCKLE UP

The travel and lifestyle brand TUMI has launched a limited-edition partnership with supercar maker McLaren. The TUMI | McLaren 60th Anniversary collection celebrates six decades since the founding of the automobile label. The capsule is the final instalment of the brand’s spring 2023 campaign entitled Unpack Tomorrow, featuring Lando Norris, the McLaren Formula 1 driver. “We are thrilled to have collaborated on this collection with McLaren, utilising their famous papaya colour and combining modern, lightweight materials to create luggage, bags and accessories that celebrate their 60th anniversary,” said Victor Sanz, TUMI’s Creative Director. We are stronger together! Following this principle, our May round-up brings the latest collaborations in the worlds of fashion and beauty.
Upgraded Streetwear
H&M has been collaborating with big names in the fashion industry since 2004 – Karl Lagerfeld was the first to design a capsule for the streetwear label. The latest collaboration to hit the stores on May 11 is with the iconic house of Mugler. Discussions for this partnership began before Manfred Thierry Mugler’s passing in January 2022. The collection unites the house’s history with its present and future, offering various Mugler classics and signatures. The pieces showcase the Mugler world today and the intriguing ways that the American designer Casey Cadwallader (Mugler’s Creative Director) has twisted and reinvented the brand to make it fresh and relevant for the new generation. “It is truly an honour to collaborate with H&M. The collection is a celebration of everything that defines Mugler as a house, and each piece is authentic Mugler, from the bodysuits, which have become a signature of ours, to the sharp tailoring and worked denim. It is a showcase of our icons,” said Casey Cadwallader. The limited edition includes womenswear, menswear and accessories.

The fresh, handmade cosmetics company, Lush, released an exclusive product collection in partnership with Nintendo + Illumination’s animated film The Super Mario Bros. Movie The special capsule features a Princess Peach body spray, Mario and Luigi shower gels and a first-of-its-kind mystery Question Block bath bomb. The surprise bath bombs come with a hidden collectable power-up soap inside, each with its own unique fragrance and colour. There are six options, from mischievous mushrooms to the elusive and exclusive gold star. The Lush X The Super Mario Bros. Movie collection allows fans to get their hands on a limited-edition eight-piece range based on some of the most popular characters from the film. “The collection is innovative and iconic with surprise and delight elements inspired by the film, and we can’t wait for the reaction from fans,” said Stephanie Kraus, SVP Global Design and Product Development, Universal Products & Experiences.
Immortalised Karl
Another collaboration is between Bosa, an internationally known Venetian ceramics workshop, which has been creating completely handmade objects and pieces of furniture since 1976, and Karl Lagerfeld. The KARL LAGERFELD X BOSA collection is comprised of two distinctive sculptures inspired by the signature look that made Karl Lagerfeld an instantly recognisable figure. POP KARL is a humorous and playful representation embracing Karl’s irony and wit. Designer Elena Salmistraro uses colour and contrast to create a vivid, textured piece, while Nika Zupanc’s ROCK KARL captures his signature look in more monochromatic tones. Each piece measures 41cm in height and 18cm in width – a homage to the designer’s endless ability to create from an innovative perspective. The sculptures are limited-edition, handmade and crafted from ceramics, 24-carat gold and platinum paints.
Feminine Summer
Maison Chloé has teamed up with swimwear brand ERES on an exclusive collection. Chloé’s Creative Director, Gabriela Hearst, partnered with ERES and its Creative Director, Marie-Paule Minchelli, to craft unique swimsuits and bikinis. Chloé has made a range of beachwear essentials to complement the capsule, such as ready-to-wear, bags, shoes, eyewear and hats. The items are inspired by the maison’s design signatures, including broderie anglaise and trademark ‘C’ detailing. The Chloé X ERES swimwear is made from Peau Douce – an innovative second skin material created by ERES that combines elasticity, resistance, shape and comfort and comes in earthy colours inspired by the Mediterranean. A commitment to continuously improving environmental and social impact is reflected throughout the collection. The Peau Douce material is derived from castor oil-based polyamide, and the Patricia shirt and Paloma skirt are cut from embroidered linen. Linen cultivation emits fewer greenhouse gases and requires less water, making it a lower-impact material in nature compared to other conventional fabrics.

AN ODE TO TIMEKEEPING
Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023 –a journey into watchmaking and its marvels.
For a whole week, the Swiss city of Geneva stopped or better to say that it was beating to the rhythm of watchmaking movements with one the biggest fairs in the field: Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023. Activities ‘In the Salon’ happened on April 1 and 2 and ‘In the City’ ran from March 27 until April 1. During the fair, numerous innovations were presented to keep pace with the rapidly growing global watch market. The booths of the biggest players in the field were beautifully decorated and specially designed for the event. A large concentration of some of the most incredible timepieces in the world was under the same roof – an unforgettable celebration of these timekeepers that first appeared in the 15th century. The event was extended beyond Palexpo (the convention centre where the fair happened), and the ‘In the City’ experiences were as grand as the buzz in the event’s corridors. They marked a turning point in the development of Watches and Wonders Geneva, engaging the city and the general public, who were drawn by special events in the boutiques and at other points of interest in the watchmaking capital.
Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023 closed with record figures, with 43,000 unique visitors (22,000 in 2022) over the whole week, 5,400 retailers, 125 nationalities, and 35,000 overnight stays, while the number of end consumers doubled during the first five days.
In the following pages, we will bring some of the latest launches that happened at this extraordinary exhibition and around town. The OHLALAteam was there again this year and we had the opportunity to experience this fascinating event firsthand –we are looking forward to going back next year!

JEWELLERY WATCHES
Eye-catching pieces that tell time are at the core of Van Cleef & Arpels’ creations revealed at Watches and Wonders.
For the 2023 Watches and Wonders salon, Van Cleef & Arpels brought all of its expertise to bear on a unique vision of timekeeping. Blending exclusive know-how, the maison perpetuates and enriches its history of jewels that tell time.
The jewellery watches from the Perlée and Alhambra collections unveil new combinations of meticulously selected gems, while the skills of Van Cleef & Arpels’ Workshops are on full display in the Ludo Secret and the À Cheval High Jewelry watches. Dials captivate the gaze with their reflections or thanks to surprising and mesmerising plays of hide and seek.
In an encounter of traditional craft skills and technical expertise, the Lady Féerie watch reinvents itself in harmonious new colours to manifest Van Cleef & Arpels’ unique Poetry of Time. Three Extraordinary Objects complete this dive into the heart of rare skills. Culminating on the wrist or hanging from the neck, Van Cleef & Arpels’ precious watches combine jewellery know-how and watchmaking expertise to offer elegant settings.
THE PERLÉE COLLECTION
Five timeless models marry gentle curves with subtle details, offering a contemporary take on jewellery that tells time. In fluid lines, the watches bear a round shape bordered with a double row of golden beads displaying their sides in mirror-polished rose gold or diamond-paved white gold. Under rounded glass, the dials are adorned with a décor of pavé-set diamonds or guilloché rose gold or mother-of-pearl, each capturing light for an intense sparkle. A push-button behind the case sets the time and remains invisible while the watch is worn.
THE ALHAMBRA COLLECTION
A new Sweet Alhambra jewellery watch alternating gold and ornamental stone motifs around a dial featuring the collection’s emblematic four-lobe shape in larger dimensions. It marries the gentle tones of rose gold to the warm hues of carnelian, a material dear to the maison and appreciated for its bright colour. A reddish-orange variety of agate, carnelian has been used to adorn jewellery since Antiquity. Thanks to a radiant guilloché, rose gold reveals shifting gleams; the eye is captivated as light plays in the subtle relief of a sunburst.
HIGH JEWELRY WATCHES
True creations of jewellery, while also enchanting timepieces, High Jewelry watches display the passing hours with timeless sophistication. This year, Van Cleef & Arpels is devoting all of its expertise to its vision of Poetry of Time. In the À Cheval collection, the mountings are flexible and scintillating, highlighting the beauty of diamonds and coloured gems. Like a surprise, the watches of the Ludo Secret collection continue the tradition of mystery dear to the maison. By cleverly hiding their dial, these elegant and inventive pieces allow the wearer to tell time with discretion, making every second a secret. A marriage of rose gold with diamonds or pink sapphires.
ENCHANTED HOURS
Since the 1940s, Van Cleef & Arpels has celebrated the beauty of fairies through creations brimming with enchantment. Today, the brand is offering a new take on its Lady Féerie watch in different shades of pink enamel and miniature painting. The brand is also renowned in a rare and little-known field: Extraordinary Objects and automatons. They reflect the maison’s taste for the mechanical arts. These are in line with the clocks and table objects created by the brand since its origin, a tradition revived in 2017 with the Fée Ondine automaton.

CLASSICS TRANSFORMED
Cartier has added a new timepiece to its Cartier Privé collection: the Tank Normale.
It is interesting to notice how Cartier sees time. They see it as cyclical instead of linear, explaining why the luxury brand is constantly engaged in transformation and reinvention and how Cartier watches make their mark in the present with an eye to the future.
Cartier’s new watch collections reflect this concept very well this year, with timepieces revisited by the maison and transformed through the prism of creativity. A selection of outstanding luxurious items is rethought: the elegant Tank Américaine, new interpretations of the Baignoire, Panthère, Santos de Cartier and the Clash [Un]limited watches. However, the spotlight goes to Tank Normale.
Each year, a rare timepiece enters the Cartier Privé collection, the meeting place for collectors celebrating the brand’s legendary models through watches produced in numbered limited series. Cartier Privé reveals its seventh opus: the Tank Normale. Created in 1917 by Louis Cartier and launched two years later, the Tank is one of the maison’s most remarkable creations.
The new version borrows the proportions and the bevelled sapphire crystal of the original and is available in yellow gold on a brown alligator strap and platinum on a black alligator strap. In addition, this model is supplied on a yellow gold bracelet or a platinum bracelet, with satin and polished finishes evoking the spirit of the 1970s.
Cartier has added a skeleton (when the inner work is exposed) movement to this emblematic model, accompanied by a 24-hour complication, marked by a sun and crescent moon, that is also skeletonised. While the minute hand turns around the dial in one hour, the hour hand goes round in 24 hours instead of 12 hours. As a result, daytime hours appear on the upper part of the dial and night-time hours on the lower part. A limited edition of 50 numbered watches comes in yellow gold on a brown and green alligator strap with a blue sapphire cabochon on the winding crown and platinum on a burgundy and grey alligator strap with a ruby cabochon.
A version set with brilliant-cut diamonds completes the ensemble in a limited edition of 20 numbered pieces featuring an alligator strap in two shades of blue with a brilliant-cut diamond on the winding crown.

POWERFUL AS A LION NEW COLOURS AND SIZE
IWC Schaffhausen is a pioneer in the use of ceramic for watch cases. In 1986, the company introduced the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, the world’s first wristwatch with a case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic. IWC was also one of the first watch brands to push forward the development of different ceramic colours.
The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Oceana (Ref. 389404) features a case made of blue ceramic, developed in collaboration with Pantone and inspired by the colour of the U.S. Navy’s working overalls. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN (Ref. 389401) is IWC’s first 41mm Pilot’s Chronograph in black ceramic – a Jet Black black zirconium oxide ceramic case. This marks the first time IWC offers the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 in a case made of ceramic – an extremely hard and scratch-resistant performance material. Both timepieces are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69380 calibre, an extremely robust and reliable mechanical chronograph movement. This calibre family has been engineered with a strict focus on robustness, reliability and durability. @iwcwatches
At the Watches and Wonders exhibition in Geneva, IWC Schaffhausen introduced its first 41mm Pilot’s Chronographs in ceramic.
ZENITH Pilot watches welcome new items to their family.
ZENITH’s fascination with the world of aviation goes as far back as the late 19th century when its founder Georges Favre-Jacot thought humankind was on the verge of finally conquering the skies. He believed that ZENITH should be there alongside the brave pioneers who saw a world of freedom and infinite possibilities far above the horizon. Today, ZENITH continues to uphold and build upon this unparalleled heritage with the latest generation of the Pilot collection.
The watches revisit the collection’s aesthetic codes in a silhouette full of subtle details. Crafted in a 40mm stainless steel or black ceramic case, the Pilot Automatic features a new case design with a flat-top round bezel. The steel version’s surfaces are vertically satin-brushed with polished chamfers, while the black ceramic is entirely micro-blasted for a stealthy matte finish. The oversized crown, a defining feature of Pilot watches, takes on a more modern, angular form.
The Pilot Big Date Flyback line is the other new option. An interpretation of the El Primero 3600 calibre, with various new functions conceived specifically for the Pilot. The stainless steel takes a page from one of the most distinguished El Primero Flyback chronographs and the black ceramic takes on an a chromatic, utilitarian look with luminescent white markers and hands contrasting boldly against the opaline black corrugated dial. Both come in two distinct versions in a 42.5mm case.

THE SKY IS YOURS EXPOSED WORK
Charles Zuber launched Perfos KARL, a skeletonised version of the original Perfos, to honour its founder.
Born in 1932 in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland, Zuber’s first name was Karl. When he created his watch brand, he decided to give a French tone to his first name: Karl Zuber became Charles Zuber. As a tribute to him, Cédric Johner was invited to skeletonise the Perfos watch, created by Eric Giroud, giving life to Perfos KARL. The design of the Perfos KARL is contemporary and suits lovers of style, strong design codes and watchmaking expertise. The dial comes with a metallic hue thanks to a galvanic deposit of satin-finished, hand-sunlit ruthenium, revealing the watch’s inner workings. The dial is surrounded at its centre by a halo of 36 baguettecut orange sapphires (0.8 carats) placed as a focal point, contrasting with the rose gold hands. The shiny black alligator strap is hand-finished.
On the front of the watch, a tour de force: on a sapphire crystal serving as the watch’s dial, 60 small coloured triangular pink gold appliques corresponding to the 60 minutes of the passing hour are placed, spaced in an arc like a sun. Machined one by one and assembled by hand, they give the impression of levitating above the movement. This exclusive edition is limited to eight pieces of 39mm in 18-carat pink gold. Each watch is full of emotion and characterised by the uniqueness of its finishes.

TRADITION MEETS MODERNITY
A model born from a combination of
Constantin’s watchmaking heritage.
The new Traditionnelle tourbillon retrograde date openface watch design combines an avant-garde aesthetic, mechanical sophistication and the desire to share Vacheron Constantin’s creative expertise. A retrograde date display is one in which the indicator does not complete a full turn of the dial, instead travelling along its entire measurement segment and returning to its starting point. Complemented by a tourbillon stylised in the shape of a hollowed-out Maltese Cross, the retrograde date display gains depth in a functional and contemporary style. At Vacheron Constantin, retrograde displays first became popular in the 1920s, when the maison’s creations were inspired by the aesthetic principles of Art Déco, with extravagant touches. The opening uses the architecture of the 2162 R31 movement – with its slate grey shade achieved by an NAC (Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum Oxide) surface treatment – visible on both sides, highlighting its mechanical power.
Housed in an 18-carat pink gold case measuring 41mm in diameter and only 11.07mm thick, this new timepiece is eye-catching yet not heavy. The openface dial features the watch’s technical nature and meticulous and consistent attention to detail, fitted with a grey alligator strap secured by a pink gold folding clasp.
FUN, FUNCTION AND SPARKLE
Oris launched three new timepieces with different approaches at their core.
ProPilot x Kermit Edition
This watch is a partnership with the TV show Sesame Street using one of its characters – Kermit, the frog. The timepiece is based on the 39mm titanium ProPilot X Calibre 400 with a green dial and a twist. On the first of every month, the date window at six o’clock is filled with a Kermit emoji – ‘Kermit Day’ is all about not taking life too seriously.
ProPilot Altimeter
The new ProPilot Altimeter has an improved altimeter module capable of indicating altitudes up to 19,700ft or 6,000m (two available configurations). The new watch’s case is made in lightweight carbon fibre produced using an innovative process developed and perfected by a partnership with 9T Labs.
Aquis Date Diamonds
This is Oris’ first watch with a dial and bezel set with lab-grown diamonds. The bezel is set with 48 brilliant-cut, lab-grown diamonds and 44 diamonds are set into the dial. In total, the watch comes with 1.2 carats of diamonds.

Parmigiani Fleurier presents timepieces displaying three calendars: Gregorian,
Parmigiani Fleurier has created a trilogy of watches made in platinum that bring three different calendars using their alphabets. The Gregorian calendar is a solar dating system adopted by most of the world using Western-Arabic numbers. The Islamic calendar is a traditional lunar calendar and uses Eastern-Arabic numerals. The Xiali calendar brings the complex Chinese system based on lunar and solar elements with Chinese numerals.
Human history has always sought to control time, its flow and its predictability to organise and impart a distinctive rhythm to social, religious and agricultural life. The calendar is a universal concept enabling us to identify dates that appear like milestones. All civilisations have created them according to their perception based on the path of the sun, moon or both. While time is the same for everyone, its reading and measurement are specific to each human society.
The three watches are made in Platinum 950 with a sandblasted finish. The indices come in 18-carat gold rhodium-plated appliques; the moon phase is represented in blue aventurine. This exceptional trilogy is issued in a strictly limited edition of three box sets.
LUXURIOUS GOLD
Bell & Ross gives an opulent twist to its BR 05 –painting it in gold and green. The new model has been designed for urban explorers.
The new BR 05 Green Gold complements the Bell & Ross BR 05 family. The BR 05 design is inspired by the iconic BR 03 but with a more refined style. It integrates the case and bracelet, resulting in a clean, stylish design with an edgy aura. The urban model launched in 2019 has been a great success for the brand. The distinctive green colour of the dial characterises this new collection. The painted metal plate that serves as the base of the dial has a sunburst effect, changing colour when tilted. Depending on the reflections hitting its surface, it varies between an almost fluorescent shade to dark bottle green. Made in 18-carat 5N gold, it gives the illusion of a gold ingot for the wrist. The sapphire crystal caseback reveals the beating heart of the automatic BR-CAL.321 mechanism, with an oscillating weight that is also adorned in gold – a third off-white shade to ensure better readability in the dark. The integrated bracelet is designed entirely in satin-brushed gold; only the small links have a polished finish. A second alligator-leather strap is available in a classic style that pairs well with this elegant timepiece. This is the first time the BR 05 has featured a leather strap.

CLASSIC AND DARING

Dolce&Gabbana is known for its colourful style and creative clothes. When it comes to watches, they also offer subtle designs, such as the new item in the Sofia line. As with the other models of the same collection, the wristwatch is characterised by its squared case featuring a series of geometric facets. The new timepiece comes in 316L steel with 56 colourless diamonds set in the bezel, a rose-cut black diamond embellishing the crown and an ivory mother-of-pearl dial. A Swiss Made calibre and a 316L steel Milano mesh bracelet complete the watch, lending it character and class.
Two new precious wristwatches enrich the Anna Fine Jewellery Collection. A love story for precious stones: they are made with beaming yellow citrines or pink tourmalines found in different cuts and set in collets – on the case bezel and the entire bracelet. The 18-carat gold round case measuring 34mm in diameter, encloses a Swiss Made movement. The dial is also a light source, thanks to the brilliant diamond pavé with luminescent hands and enamelled baton hour markers. Made entirely in Italy by master goldsmiths at Dolce&Gabbana workshops, these jewel watches combine the brand’s creative DNA with the technical excellence of Swiss watchmaking tradition.

BUZZY BEE
Science proves that the eyes are one of the areas where the effects of ageing first appear. To help solve this issue, Guerlain has launched Abeille Royale Double R Renew & Repair Eye Serum.
Guerlain has invested in the power of nature to develop its products and, this time, honey is in the spotlight. Inspired by dermo-cosmetic care, Guerlain’s research team has unveiled the youth-repairing powers of honey to deliver the effects of radiance and lifting.
The new Abeille Royale Double R Renew & Repair Eye Serum targets the eye contour area. It intends to act on the visible signs of ageing, tackling wrinkles and firmness and diffusing a global radiance-activating process, helping to correct dark circles. The skin is treated and the eyelashes appear strengthened and denser at the root.
After 10 years of research into the repairing powers of bee products, the Dynamic Blackbee Repair technology has been created, taking effective action on the visible signs of ageing and boosting skin’s self-repair mechanisms. Its unique formula is based on the precise combination of black bee honey from Ouessant Island, three other kinds of honey from islands with unspoilt environments (Corsica in France, Ikaria in Greece and Åland in Finland) and an exclusive royal jelly harvested in France.
The eye serum formula also combines the stimulating action of an anti-fatigue complex composed of a subtle blend of fragmented hyaluronic acid acting on the quality of the epidermis and a peptide accelerating recovery from dullness.
Like Double R Renew & Repair Advanced Serum for the face, Guerlain research has given Double R Renew & Repair Eye Serum two textures with complementary sensory qualities that offer the eye area a subtle balance combining freshness, a lifting effect and suppleness.
The Renew formula, which concentrates its illuminating power in a fresh, shaping and supple gel with no sticky effect, contrasts with the Repair formula, a soft and soothing emulsion that does not run into eyes.
The sensory pleasure of the two formulas is highlighted by the delicate honeyed scent, entirely tailored to the sensitive eye area, created by Thierry Wasser, Guerlain’s master perfumer. A real ode to naturalness, Renew & Repair’s double formula is composed of 95% naturally-derived ingredients. @guerlain
THE ART OF BATHING
Deep skin cleansing in a place that combines tradition with modern luxury is what Laura Morris experiences at Saray Spa.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city centre, on the seventh floor of Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel, lives Saray Spa. The place is a one-stop destination for all things wellness and prides itself on offering a range of traditional and contemporary treatments and a hotel spa that also represents affordable luxury.
I arrive at Saray Spa, with its dimly lit welcome area, and immediately, the stresses of my day ease away. The therapists, with their warm smiles, set the tone for my visit – this is a chance to be pampered! As I wait momentarily for my therapist to join me, I am enticed to explore the products on offer in the shop which showcases a range of deluxe products and devices such as reed diffusers and candles. These must be the source of the warm and relaxing aromas filling the space!
Today, I am here for the Moroccan Hammam Bath. My therapist, Murni, tells me this is a popular and classic choice. When a treatment is so traditional, I relish the opportunity to experience a different take on it, often finding comfort in familiar elements but with my curiosity spiked whenever a new routine is included. Before it begins, I am guided to
the changing area, where I am given a soft robe and some slippers. While I change, I drink a cool hibiscus juice presented alongside a cold towel.
Entering the treatment room, I am greeted by the sight of a beautifully laid marble stone adorned with soft towels for comfort and safety. The temperature inside is warm and inviting, creating a cosy ambience that instantly puts me at ease. Murni talks me through the treatment cycle, providing informative details without being overwhelming. The room is dimly lit, creating an atmosphere that adds to my overall sense of relaxation. As I prepare for the Hammam Bath, my therapist ensures that the water temperature and pressure are to my liking and then proceeds to the initial full-body rinse. The treatment moves on to the application of Moroccan Black Soap; it is thick and lathers up nicely, filling the room with a soft aroma. As it is gently rubbed into my tired skin, Murni shares the unique qualities of this traditional soap: it is known for its ability to remove dead skin cells and toxins and aims to leave my skin feeling softer and smoother. I lie back and enjoy the sensation of it deeply cleansing my skin while listening to the gentle sound of running water reminiscent of rain in the distance.
Next comes the scrub. Murni applies the perfect amount of pressure to boost circulation and provide me with a satisfyingly clean feeling. At this point, it’s worth noting that I am pleasantly surprised by how thoroughly she works to hit even the harderto-reach spots while also being respectful of my personal areas. I feel rejuvenated already as the scrub invigorates my senses and leaves my skin feeling instantly refreshed. After the scrub, Jordanian Dead Sea mud is applied liberally: this has a slight coarseness to its texture which contributes to the slight tingling sensation that I feel while it is smothered on. The mud used by Saray Spa is of the highest quality and known for its antiageing properties, and I must say, I am excited to experience its benefits.
As the mud is given time to work, I am treated to a luxurious hair wash, elevating the experience to new heights. To my mind, there is something rather regal about having your hair washed in this way. Murni uses rose shampoo followed by the same scent of conditioner, products chosen by Saray from the exclusive brand The Different Company, which is stocked only by the world’s most prestigious retailers. The smell of rose
fills the room with its captivating aroma. The mud continues to work its magic for around 10 minutes whilst I enjoy the calmness of a quiet moment to myself. My skin can feel the product begin to firm, forming a thin, dry crust-like texture that is both tightening and satisfying. In the next step, the Sandalwood Melting Gel is used to gently wash the mud away. Its thick texture glides smoothly against my now supple skin and bubbles into a light foam as it is applied. My therapist’s soft and caring hands massage the gel into my skin, with a particular focus on my upper body, working out any knots. As the treatment comes to an end, I am given a final rinse on the marble stone before being shown to a private shower area within the Hammam room. I take the opportunity to finish with a refreshing rinse in the shower, feeling revitalised and refreshed after my Moroccan Hammam Bath has come to an end.
On leaving the treatment room, I go to a relaxing space with a platter of dates, fresh sliced apples and cashew nuts. I opt to partner this with a steamy ginger tea. As I lie back in my robe, sipping my tea, I take the opportunity to reflect on what has been a truly indulgent and rejuvenating experience. Every
moment has been carefully curated to create a delightfully relaxing and pampering session. The 75 minutes of the treatment feel simultaneously like they have gone by in a heartbeat but also like the busy world around me has stopped! I go back to the quiet zone in a bit of a daze, a real sign of inner calmness for me. My skin feels cleaner, softer and firmer than it did only a short while ago, with a sweet-smelling scent releasing every time I move.
If you are looking for a spa where you are given a chance to truly unwind, look no further than Saray Spa. Their Moroccan Hammam Bath is an experience that takes relaxation to new heights, a trend which I’m informed spans across their treatment range and, as such, I will certainly be visiting again to try another of their indulgent offerings as soon as I can.

Authentic Style
Eye-catching pieces are at the core of this capsule from MAX&Co., designed by Duro Olowu.
MAX&Co. is a contemporary Italian fashion brand with original and versatile collections worn by stylish women around the world. The latest chapter in its &Co.llaboration SS2023 series brings a partnership with British-Nigerian designer and curator Duro Olowu.
The designer is well-known for his mesmerising use of print and colour. His deep knowledge of art history sets the tone for his creations and, for this capsule, the work of Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri has guided Duro to develop these pieces. “My collection for MAX&Co. is inspired by his beautifully poetic, dreamy, colourful and vivid photographs of Italy in the 1970s and 1980s,” says the designer. “I imagined the artist extending his travels to other parts of the world like Bamako in Mali and Saint Louis in Senegal, to capture with his camera the same powerful and captivating sunburnt colour images and vivid moments as he did in Italy.”
The result is the People, Places, Colour collection, a joyful and confident capsule made for women who are endlessly curious. Bold stripes, romantic florals and striking geometric prints are interlaced. The main colours are azure blue, hot pink and ‘Ghirri orange’, evoking a sense of wanderlust. Tailoring, dresses and shirts are intricately cut yet easy to wear. Designed to be effortlessly and intuitively mixed, they encourage the wearer to express their individuality. “The collection is designed for a woman of any age across all continents, who travels in her head, via her wardrobe, dressed in an interesting and effortlessly adventurous way. I imagine her feeling confident and emotionally attached to the pieces so that they become keepsakes,” adds Duro. @maxandco
GREEN SOLUTIONS
Sustainability is the way forward, but how can you make your home more environmentally friendly? We bring some ideas!
OHLALA Homes
If you are planning to re-design or build your home from scratch, there are many alternatives to embrace in this exciting process. With much research and technology being used to develop innovative materials and construction styles, building a house or renovating it with an ecological perspective has become more accessible.
You can begin reducing the impact on the environment by making it energy efficient. Installing high-quality windows with adequate insulation is a good starting point. Air conditioners blasting 24 hours a day for most of the year is a reality in this part of the world, and well-sealed windows keep the cool air inside, saving electricity.
Another idea that needs a bit more investment but would work wonders here is solar-powered homes. The solar panels are usually placed on the roof of a house, and the heat absorbed is used to generate electricity and heat water. Sun is something we don’t lack here, and using this renewable energy is a great way to reduce our carbon footprint (the total amount of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, generated by our actions). Moving onto something more advanced, we have the Passive Houses. They follow a set of design principles using rigorous standards for energy efficiency to reduce the building’s ecological footprint. They are built with an airtight construction style, superior insulation and triple-glazed windows. They also use efficient façades with innovative systems to cool down the building in summer and keep it warm during winter, such as the water-filled glass (WFG) system. The WFG window contains a thin layer of water between glass panels that absorbs heat from sunlight. When the sun’s rays penetrate the glass, the windows keep the buildings cool as the water absorbs external and internal heat. This warm water is then pumped through sealed pipes to a storage tank. When the outdoor temperature drops, the stored warm water can be brought back to the walls to reheat the building using a monitoring system similar to central heating.
OHLALA Homes
Tech solutions are also becoming popular with domotic homes, also known as smart homes, that help with energy efficiency by remotely controlling lights, heating, shutters and air conditioning systems. Automating a home aims to keep the house cooler or warmer, depending on the season, at a minimum cost, benefiting the environment. There is also something a bit more challenging to sustain in the Middle East due to the harsh climate, but green roofs are pretty trendy in big cities. Apart from being a beautiful landscaping decoration, they are primarily a super-efficient insulation to a home, preventing energy loss. They also increase oxygen levels and protect a roof from the continuous attacks of wind, rain and ultraviolet light, helping your rooftop to last longer.
Eco-friendly ideas can also be found in interior design, and there are some projects worth highlighting:
PET LAMP
In the summer of 2011, the Spanish designer Álvaro Catalán de Ocón was invited by psychologist and conservationist Hélène Le Drogou to be part of an interesting project focusing on the reuse of PET plastic bottles and to give his point of view as an industrial designer. The PET bottle was chosen for its very short life span compared to the time it takes to decompose and even the incredible amount of energy necessary to produce and recyle it. With this in mind, the PET Lamp project was born. The initiative combines plastic PET bottles with basket-weaving traditions found in many communities around the globe. The neck of the PET bottle is used as the top part of the lamp (to pass the electrical components), and its body is cut into strings that are then weaved with natural material. In 2020 they launched the PET Lamp Bolgatanga collection in collaboration with the weavers of Ghana’s Baba Tree Basket Company. The Bolgatanga collection has become one of the brand’s best-sellers. Since PET Lamp’s launch in 2012, they have taken the project all over the globe, working with communities and artisans to build eight unique collections.
KRILL DESIGN
Another interesting project is developed by Krill Design, an Italian design studio specialised in developing home products within a 100% circular and sustainable process. It was created in 2018 by Ivan Calimani, Martina Lamperti and Yack di Maio, who share a passion for innovation, sustainability and design.
The three founders decided to experiment with innovative materials, which, combined with the 3D printing method, gave life to a successful and environmentally friendly production process. They have created an ingenious material called Rekrill, which is 100% biodegradable and made with by-products of the food chain. They use different types of homogeneous organic waste, such as peels, shells, seeds and coffee grounds. The final objects are lamps, fruit bowls, vases, organisers and more. Ohmie, the orange lamp is manufactured with the peels of Sicilian oranges transformed into a 100% natural and compostable biomaterial. This product is an example of a 100% circular item, with a short supply chain and entirely Made in Italy. Each Ohmie is made from the peel of two to three oranges and saves one kilo of CO2. The table lamp is equipped with a light bulb, has a USB connection and the intensity of the light is adjustable.
CICIL
You can never have enough rugs and CICIL is a women-owned and sustainable rug brand based in North Carolina in the United States that offers an eco-friendly solution in this field. As textile-savvy and students of sustainability, founders Caroline Cockerham and Laura Tripp built a way to make home textiles outside of the usual carbon-intensive production for these types of décor. Their braided carpets are made with natural and renewable materials (no synthetic or petro-chemical based fibres, including polyester) with a sustainable supply chain to make their products traceable.
They source and manufacture in small batches, close to home, from traceable and responsible origins. They work directly with farmers and co-ops to assemble their naturally coloured, undyed wool. Renewable fibres, like wool, have inherent performance characteristics ranging from microbial resistance to durability, breathability, softness and more. CICIL’s wool comes from Romney, Wensleydale and Cotswold sheep, and they utilise all of their natural colours, ranging from white to blond, grey, brown and black. Using dark colours of raw wool is unconventional because they can’t be dyed, limiting their commercial applications (hence the term ‘black sheep’). By using the whole colour range, they are able to divert fibre from the waste stream. The result is a long, durable and soft fibre that takes on shades of grey when blended. CICIL’s pieces are made to order, and they ship rugs out within three to six weeks.

Istanbul is a metropolis like no other. Marking the point where East meets West, this historic location is the only city simultaneously situated in Asia and Europe. OHLALA travelled to this enchanting part of the world, compliments of Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus, Istanbul, to experience all the luxury this five-star venue has on offer.
MEET AND GREET SERVICE
Luxury begins when we land. Istanbul International Airport’s Meet and Greet service is unmatched. Arranged by the hotel, you’ll be whisked away in a luxury golf cart straight to the car. It took eight minutes from disembarking the plane to finding ourselves seated in a Mercedes-Benz on our way to the hotel. No walking, no queues, no waiting for luggage or going through customs. It’s all taken care of for you by the incredible team.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
As we pulled up to Mandarin Oriental, we were still buzzing from the glimpses of the vibrant city we experienced en route. Even from the car, all the sights, sounds and smells beckoned us to explore this proverbial melting pot of the old and the new.
“The composition of the hotel itself is a marvel, with its lowrise design, elegant marbleclad façade and Ottoman-style slate roof.”
TRAVEL Escapes
Nestled in the Naile Sultan pine grove in the sophisticated Kuruçeşme district, Mandarin Oriental sits alongside the shimmering shoreline on the European side of Istanbul. Its perfect location provides panoramic views across the Bosphorus Strait and a central location to explore the famous city.
The composition of the hotel itself is a marvel, with its low-rise design, elegant marble-clad façade and Ottoman-style slate roof. Lush gardens and private wooden pavilions along the waterfront add to the luxurious and welcoming nature of the premises.
Once inside, the marble, bronze and glass elements of the interior design create a contemporary setting that is both alluring and comforting. The hotel’s five-star status is always on full display, and we felt that we could have been the only guests there, thanks to the staff’s attentive service.
ROOMS FIT FOR ROYALTY
As we made our way along the pristine hallways of the hotel, we were fortunate enough to inspect various accommodations on offer to guests. Each guestroom and suite is spacious, fully equipped and offers picturesque views of the Bosphorus.
Most options include balconies or terraces and feature striking design elements comprising ornate bronze and onyx marble. Organic textures and patterns with bespoke metal and other details are also included in the impressive interior designs.
Many of these rooms are adaptable for family needs, and the hotel provides 24-hour room service to all guests.
Our suite was as beautiful and spacious as you’d expect from the high calibre of Mandarin Oriental. The highlight was, simply, one of the most comfortable beds we have ever had the pleasure of sleeping in.
CULINARY SPLENDOUR AT OLEA BOSPHORUS & THE BAR
On the first night of our stay, we were invited to the celebrated Olea Bosphorus & The Bar, an exceptional venue serving up authentic Italian flavours. Once seated, we ordered an array of options from the impressive menu, and thoroughly enjoyed every dish laid on the table. The octopus carpaccio was perfection and the oxtail fettuccine was worth every bite.
NOVIKOV ISTANBUL
On our second night, we indulged at the world-renowned, all-day restaurant, Novikov.
This spectacular ground-floor location offers a fusion of Asian, Mediterranean and Italian dishes, along with magnificent views of the Bosphorus. We found the pan-fried Asian delicacies particularly appetising, and we were hugely impressed by the quality of the ingredients and the warm service.
ADDITIONAL DINING VENUES
There are four additional dining venues, including: the contemporary Novikov Lounge Bar, the alfresco Novikov Pool Bar, the soothing Bosphorus Lounge and the enticing The Mandarin Cake Shop.
RELAX AND RECHARGE AT THE SPA
Perhaps our favourite individual experience at the hotel was our time at the luxurious spa, where we indulged in a relaxing 60-minute massage. The aroma of the signature ginger oil and the soothing pressure eased tired muscles and left us feeling deeply pampered and relaxed.
The spa’s 3,500sq/m facilities include 11 treatment rooms, a VIP treatment room, a sauna, a steam room and gender-separate Hammams, amongst other options.

The hotel boasts an outstanding spa housed in the 18th-century Villa Emilia, three wonderful swimming pools, a floodlit clay tennis court, an 18-hole golf course close by and some of the most exquisite dining choices for guests to truly indulge themselves.

CHIC AND AUTHENTIC CUISINE
CHIC Eats
BeBabel is a hidden gem tucked away towards the rear of The St. Regis Doha. As you wind around the corner, the elegance of this chic hideaway immediately becomes apparent with a cool and modern design offering a wide selection of Lebanese cuisine and promising a unique dining experience for all. On entering the restaurant, the blend of traditional design and modern style is striking. Intricate mosaic flooring, paired with industrial cement pillars, creates a stunning visual contrast and draws your eye towards a large lounge area, encased entirely in glass. Diners can also sit on the terrace, which can be enjoyed the whole year as it has a retractable ceiling and windows that can be left open or closed based on the weather. In the centre, a striking art installation of huge grey and black stones balancing serves almost as a meditative tool to focus the mind and bring you fully into the present moment. Walls adorned with panels of brightly coloured canvas artwork add considered pops of colour to the otherwise minimalist décor. We are seated in the main part of the restaurant, a spot that’s almost like a hall of mirrors, with reflective surfaces making the large open space feel even more lavish. The upbeat Arabic jazz in the background creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, setting the stage for an exciting culinary journey. Our friendly host talks us through the extensive menu and we decide on a variety of options, keen to sample a range of flavours.
CHIC Eats
Within only a few short moments, our table is filled with a decadent array of fare for us to tuck into. The variety of cold mezze dishes includes the time-honoured and much-loved Arabic dish, hummus. A favourite for so many, and BeBabel certainly show they can deliver. This hummus is not only one of the smoothest and creamiest I have sampled, but is also presented so elegantly, in a ring with chickpeas filling the centre. The Mafroukit Tajen too comes as a ring, this time with a welcome fresh grapefruit centre. A divine mixture of tahini, thyme, raisins and onions together with a nut medley of almonds and pistachios provides a pleasant textural contrast. These dishes, combined with the warm and homely pitta bread create a perfect mix. Another delight, the Fattoush Salad is both crisp and refreshing. Topped with a juicy, sweet balsamic dressing, pomegranate arils, coriander, mint, lettuce and spring onion, it is a fragrant and delightfully flavourful salad and a perfect accompaniment to this first round of dishes.
Soon, the selection of hot mezze arrives. We tuck into the Cherry Kebab which features sharp cherry compote layered on top of meat kebabs, an accompaniment to the last of the pitta. My eyes are drawn instantly to a pile of small, crispy bites presented like a volcano; I quickly discover these to be boneless chicken wings. A perfectly balanced mix of soft chicken and crispy coating, dressed with chives, honey sauce and pomegranate molasses. The tangy fruity burst is a delightful surprise and the generous helping makes it easy to share. Another star in this course has to be the Ravioli Shish Barak. This elegant dish has floating parcels of delicate pasta ravioli oozing with a rich cheese flavour, each filled with soft mincemeat and with a peppering of paprika adding rich colour and a light spice: a delicious and indulgent dish which we enjoy to the last bite!
After a much-needed pause and a cold beverage, we are ready for our main courses. The Freekeh Chicken is a charming and hearty dish that features tender chicken served on a bed of nutty barley, accompanied by a selection of grilled vegetables. Ouzi Lamb is paired with Oriental rice. Domed and inviting, with subtle flavours, this dish is perfectly balanced. The slow-cooked lamb which melts in the mouth, is enveloped in a rich and creamy gravy. Add to this mix a nut medley that includes peanuts, cashews and pistachios and you have a dish that represents traditional Lebanese flavours and cooking techniques beautifully.
Described by our host as Karabij ‘with a twist’, BeBabel’s signature dessert is the perfect end to our culinary journey. A fusion of old and new recipes presented like a piece of fine art, the sweet course features a rectangular bed of pistachio crumb layered with a generous helping of biscuit pieces drizzled with fine white chocolate. But the goodness doesn’t stop there. On top, sit elegantly decorated scoops of thick ice-cream that resemble a rose petal both in shape and taste. One spoonful of this, coupled with a sample of the finely spun cotton candy cloud that sits upon it, is enough to satisfy even those with the sweetest of teeth! A pure delight, the subtle hint of rose perfectly complements the rich warm flavours of the crumb, making it an unforgettable end to our feast.
Our experience at BeBabel has been quite exceptional, the combination of traditional and modern design, outstanding service, and utterly delicious food make it a standout visit. The extensive menu caters to all tastes, with a focus on fusing traditional Lebanese cuisine with new techniques and a chic style. BeBabel is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for their next memorable dining experience.

THE NEW MASERATI GRECALE
AS LONG-TIME TEST DRIVERS, THE OHLALA TEAM ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A HIGH-PERFORMANCE VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT VEHICLE IS A MASERATI.
Who wouldn’t want to spend the day in a Maserati? This month, OHLALA got to do exactly that thanks to the great team at Maserati Qatar, who handed us the ‘keys’ to the 2023 Grecale. Needless to say, we were super excited to get our hands on this high-end machine.
EXTERIOR
Named after a North Easterly Mediterranean wind, the Grecale is certainly a breath of fresh air. The moment we laid eyes on the vehicle, we knew we were taking in something rather special.
At the front end of this striking SUV sits a low and imposing grille, complete with brushed chrome inserts and a large Trident emblem. This flawlessly designed feature, along with the perfectly sculpted bonnet and contemporary LED headlights, combine to create an aggressive-looking front end that seems to stare you down, daring you to try and tame it. We appreciated the seamless transition between the front and the sides, where elegant yet sporty curves and lines create a visually pleasing surface. Body-coloured side-skirts and 20-inch alloy wheels further add to the classy nature of the exterior as do the flush-to-the-body door handles. The trapezoidal dimensions of the vehicle are evident at the rear end,
where boomerang taillights – inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 – integrate flawlessly with the uniquely crafted lip spoiler. The body-coloured bumpers at both front and rear contribute toward the SUV’s upmarket appearance, while the twin dual exhaust system, sitting under the diffuser, provides a subtle reminder of the Grecale’s on-road intentions.
INTERIOR
The refined yet sporty feel of the exterior is skilfully complemented by the mastery of the interior design. The cabin of the Grecale exudes a sense of sophistication and elegance and is peppered with high-tech flourishes. Only the best materials have been used throughout, including Open Pore Wood and premium leather. The cabin also features beautiful trimmings such as the burnished inserts on the centre console and door panels. The button on the door rather than conventional door handles facilitates easy exit - every detail has a purpose.
The spacious nature of the Grecale provides comfortable seating for up to five occupants, while the cargo area provides 20cu/ft of storage space. This capacity can be greatly increased when the power-folding rear seating is laid flat, accomplished by the simple push of a button in the boot. A flat load floor is located underneath these rear seats, providing yet another storage option.
The refined yet sporty feel of the exterior is skilfully complemented by the mastery of the interior design.”

TECHNOLOGY & INFOTAINMENT
The 2023 Grecale features the latest Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) multimedia system, operated through a 12.3-inch screen or voice control. This is the largest screen ever fitted in a Maserati and boasts a resolution of 15 million pixels in Ultra HD. An 8.8-inch screen has also been included in the setup and is used to access various additional vehicle controls.
The MIA is powered by the Android Auto operating system, which we found to be impressive in terms of response speed and overall operating performance. The system also allows two smartphones to connect at once via Bluetooth and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Noteworthy optional extras include a state-of-the-art head-up display, three-zone climate control and a Sonus Faber 3D sound system with up to 21 speakers.
The key, which is actually a very funky show-off wristband, is a standard feature with the Grecale, allowing for easy access and engine start.
POWER & PERFORMANCE
Our favourite moment of the day was firing up the Grecale 2.0-litre turbocharged, mild-hybrid engine. Not only does the engine have the sweet Maserati sound to it, but the SUV’s potent powertrain can deliver up to 300hp (220kW) and 450Nm of torque. The Maserati Grecale also comes with two other engines, the Modena with a 330hp and the Trofeo with the Nettuno engine, giving you 530hp. This beauty of a four-wheel drive offers three driving modes including Comfort, GT and Sport. Its versatile and capable performance ensures it’s as comfortable on the road as it is in the rough.
We found the combination of these driving modes and the optional air suspension system to be sublime, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time negotiating the roadways of the country. Furthermore, Maserati has included a full suite of safety and driver assistance systems, ensuring the well-being of all occupants.
OUR VERDICT
In the Grecale, Maserati has created a practical SUV that is amongst the very best in the luxury segment. Not only does it exhibit a near flawless design, it also delivers a capable performance and houses an impressive list of desirable technical features.

WHAT’S THE TIME?
What have you done in the past hour? Are you counting the days until something special? The truth is that time regulates our lives, and Miss Ohlala wonders about it.
Time organises our daily lives, creates events and gives us a true feeling of living. But it is also something we tend to fight with. It’s, without a doubt, a fascinating topic for fiction stories. How many books, films and TV series have been created around time travellers and time machines? It feels like we want to control it. We are always trying to look younger and, as time machines go, we seem interested in changing history. But most of all, it seems there is never enough of it. Throughout history, there have been numerous ways to keep track of hours by using sundials, hourglasses and punching tablets. According to archaeological evidence, the Babylonians and Egyptians started to measure time around 5,000 years ago. Their particular interest was in creating some sort of calendar and time recording to regulate planting and harvesting cycles.
Nowadays, as we’ve seen in our coverage from Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023, the passage of hours is tracked in magnificent timepieces. Skilled horologists have been using technology and incredible materials to develop unique watches. Some of them even look like stunning jewellery pieces. However, we still haven’t managed to rule and manipulate time as we want. No matter what, we are still servants of the passing hours, minutes and seconds – so let’s enjoy it to the best of our ability!
