An Exciting End To The Year ‫ثير للسنة‬ ٌ ٌ ‫ختام ُم‬ What a busy few months it has been for us and, we’re sure, for you.

Between the return of the Qatar Boat Show in November and preparations for the Dubai International Boat Show, which is coming up in February, the maritime lifestyle scene is definitely heating up. On our yachting pages this month, we feature two craft you’ll be excited to know more about and are likely to see in the region.

There was also great excitement at Maranello, Italy, where Hadag watched as Ferrari unveiled the F80, a new prancing horse to join the stable of some of the most impressive sports cars ever built – it was quite an experience and we tell you all about it.

While we were there, we got to visit the impressive and incredibly beautiful Portrait Milano. Converted from an ancient seminary in the heart of Italy’s fashion capital, its exquisite Baroque architecture is breathtaking, as is the superb hospitality on offer.

Closer to home, we took a relaxing break at Mondrian Doha, Qatar – a magical place of hidden nooks and fairy-tale corners – and we dined at Liang at Mandarin Oriental, Doha, and Mirai in Bahrain – both highly recommended spots for excellent culinary adventures.

Our fashion pages this issue feature collections from Missoni and FENDI for both the holidays and the colder season and our travel section tunes into this vibe with both festive and winter escapes.

However you are spending the holiday season, we wish you joy for the upcoming year.

Taking place from February 19 to 23, 2025, at Dubai Harbour, there’s a full programme of things to see and do.

Now in its 31st edition, the annual Dubai International Boat Show has rapidly transformed from a modest gathering focused on the local maritime industry to become one of the Middle East’s most prestigious and a highly anticipated boat shows on the global stage. he new flybridge represents a major restyling introducing exclusive features such as the elegant fresh exterior styling, a redesigned hard top and interiors by Ideaeitalia.

The new model 670 retains the distinctive features of the previous version – launched to mark Ferretti Yachts’ 50th anniversary.

The vessel has an overall length of just over 20 metres with a maximum beam of 5.38 metres and is a collaboration between the Product Strategy Committee – chaired by Piero Ferrari – and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. The exterior design is by Ferretti Group in collaboration with architect Filippo Salvetti and the interiors are the work of Ideaeitalia.

Light-filled interiors in pale woods and a mix of cream with blue-grey accents are complemented with the elegant new exterior styling which includes maximum seating and storage space.

The main deck helm station has a windshield with no central pillar for superb visibility and pilot chairs by Poltrona Frau while the design of the dinette has been modified to improve the ergonomics of the foredeck.

There are also some major improvements in the flybridge layout on Ferretti Yachts 670: the seating in the al-fresco dining area has been 18

extended and made even more comfortable and a generous sunpad is available for the stern terrace. Finally, the hard top has been completely redesigned with more flowing lines and now features an opening central section.

EXTERIORS The cockpit and stern platform are ideal for al-fresco dining, with comfortable seating and direct access to the water. Two spacious storage compartments in the transom ensure that the area is always organised and uncluttered. The boat is also equipped with a tender lift that can launch a 3.45m tender.

The forward outdoor area is fitted out as a generous living space, of around 11sq/m, and can be covered entirely by a bimini top. The area consists of three large comfortable sofas and, on request, two additional tables can be positioned alongside with the possibility to convert them into relaxation surfaces.

The flybridge can be furnished with a large sunpad in the stern while in the centre, on the right, a cabinet faces a social area containing a C-shaped sofa and a dining table. Forward, the second helm station on the starboard side is followed by a huge sea-facing sunpad.

INTERIORS Following a study by Ideaeitalia, the interiors have been completely reimagined. From the cockpit on the main deck, a sliding glass door leads to the lounge, made up of two large facing sofas with a central coffee table; the TV hidden behind the sofa on the port side of the yacht is raised when in use. Wide steps lead up to the galley, which has a new more functional layout that faces the dining area and forms a large open space.

The size of the owner's suite is truly astonishing for this segment. Located in the mid-section of the boat, it includes a private study area and provides a total surface area of 18sq/m. The space has a centrally placed bed and behind it, aft, a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom.

The central hallway leads to the double cabin on the starboard side, while the VIP cabin is in the bow and both have en-suite bathrooms and separate showers.

ENGINES Ferretti Yachts 670 is equipped with twin 1,000 MHP MAN V8 engines in the standard version, giving her a top speed of 28 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots (preliminary data).

uilt by Admiral - The Italian Sea Group and designed by Gian Marco Companino Design, the 449GT vessel is the sister ship to the charter yacht Geco with numerous technical upgrades and interiors from Armani Casa.

In the world’s largest yacht rankings, Silver Star I is listed at number 712 and she is Admiral’s seventhlargest vessel to date.

Displaying an elegant and sporty spirit, Silver Star 1 has a fluid, sinuous exterior design with dynamically flowing lines in aluminium.

Among the most innovative details, the beach club area, served by a modern staircase for ease of access to the sea, is one of a kind, characterised by high, fully glassed-in side walls to protect from windy days and boasting an enormous sunbathing platform.

Consisting of three decks and hosting a generous open sun deck, the yacht features six cabins, including one owner, one VIP and four guest cabins as well as accommodation for 11 crew members.

On the upper deck, external and internal areas are connected by a fully sliding glass door that ensures continuity between the spaces. The ‘touch and go’ helipad area delicately overlooks the hull silhouette, doubling as a panoramic lounging area on the foredeck, while on the sun deck a custom-made Jacuzzi guarantees maximum relaxation for guests.

Promising essential and sophisticated luxury, the interiors, designed by Amrani/Casa offer a refined and restful ambience of neutral tones, always very elegant and never excessive. The details are fundamental and underline the purity, the classicism and at the same time, the modernity of the yacht.

The minimalism of the shapes finds its counterpoint in the use of precious and refined materials, such as high-quality fabrics and marbles, luxurious but discreet artisanal finishes and a clever mix of colours, including ivory and light blue, used in soft nuances. Ivory onyx, bluette rosewood marble and printed silk produced in Venice define a luxurious but light atmosphere, in the style of the maison.

t Hadag, we are no strangers to beautiful cars and exotic locations, having travelled the world experiencing the best places the planet has to offer, along with some of the most impressive sports cars ever created.

Recently we were invited to be a part of the unveiling of a new thoroughbred supercar, conceived, designed and built by the masterminds at Ferrari.

This new creation comes in the form of the F80, a supercar that will be produced in a limited run of just 799 examples. This means it joins the pantheon of icons such as the GTO, F40 and LaFerrari by showcasing the best the Italian marque has achieved in terms of technology and performance.

MARANELLO, ITALY Landing in Maranello, we felt we had returned to the centre of the supercar universe.

As we made our way to the site of the momentous unveiling, we felt a sense of pride in being a part of such an auspicious occasion.

After all, how often does one experience a historic moment like this in the story of the world’s most famous sports car brand?

On arrival, we were privileged to receive a quick tour of the Ferrari factory, taking in the production line before heading to the main event – the reveal of the car of the decade.

We are not exaggerating when we tell you that gasps escaped even the most discerning super car critics and enthusiasts alike.

EXTERIOR DESIGN In the F80, the Ferrari Styling Centre made radical changes in the visual language of the construction, with an amalgamation of the past and the future of the marque’s design.

When we first laid our eyes on the model, they simply did not know where to settle first, as there was so much to take in, yet it all worked together to create a harmonious mechanical masterpiece.

To us, the inspiration taken from Ferrari’s Formulae 1 racing cars was instantly apparent, perhaps steering the direction for the creation of such a modern and innovative visual identity.

The decisively futuristic visual impact, its architecture defined by a dihedral cross section with its two bottom corners firmly planted on the wheels, made us feel like little boys again, longing to jump into the ‘Rocketship’ and blast off to outer space.

From head-on we appreciated the fore section of the car, enjoying how the wheel arch ends with a vertical panel that stands proud of the door, a tip of the cap to the iconic F40. The headlamps are concealed in a visor element, with a black screen serving both aerodynamic and lighting functions. All of this ensures a strikingly original demeanour.

Shifting to the flanks of this fine thoroughbred, we took in the sculpted nature of the back end, underscoring the sheer machismo of the entire rear wing.

‫القوة واألداء‬

In truth, one would need to stand in the presence of this mechanised mysticism to fully appreciate what the architects at Ferrari have managed to accomplish in the F80.

Ascending from the immaculate character of the super car’s lower body is the bubblelike cabin, a perfectly balanced example of exquisite framework and symmetry. The contrast between the coloured upper bodywork and the clear-coat finished carbon lower zone accentuates the superior design of the vehicle.

At the short-tail rear, we commented that the vehicle could pass for a classier version of the Batmobile, with a mobile wing that can be stowed or deployed adding to the racing-like presence of the car. We loved the taillights set in a two-layer structure consisting of the fascia and the spoiler, further emphasising its sporty character.

Finally, the louvered engine compartment spine features six slots, one for each internal combustion engine cylinder, creating a symbiotic relationship between the geometric lines and sculptural surfaces.

We could have written this entire preview on the exterior design alone. In truth, one would need to stand in the presence of this mechanised mysticism to fully appreciate what the architects at Ferrari have managed to accomplish with the F80.

INTERIOR DESIGN Taking in the interior, it was obvious that the compact proportions of the cockpit were inspired by a single-seat racer, creating a visual perception akin to an enclosed Formula 1 car.

This enveloping cocoon is centred entirely around the driver, with its form converging towards the controls and instrument panel.

We appreciated how the control panel is ergonomically orientated toward the driver, further highlighting the race car-esque setup.

Impressively, the designers have accommodated a driver and passenger seat despite delivering the uncompromised experience of a single-seater.

It took a double take to recognise the presence of the passenger seat, so well integrated into the trim of the cabin that it almost disappeared.

This has been accomplished through the abilities of the most skilled car interior designers in the craft. They have masterfully utilised differentiation between materials and colours used for the driver’s seat and the rest of the interior trim.

The passenger seat has been set farther back than the driver’s seat, again showing that the plus one is merely an observer in this driver-centred setup. We noticed this positioning allows for a narrower internal space, thereby minimising the effect on the interior ergonomics and the exterior aerodynamics of the vehicle.

A must-mention internal feature of the F80 is the new steering wheel, specifically developed for this model. Slightly smaller than previous versions and with flattened top and bottom rims, it allows for improved visibility while accentuating the sense of sportiness. We admired the lateral zones of the rim, optimised to ensure a better grip, even without gloves.

The physical buttons on the left- and righthand spokes replace the full-digital layout used

by Ferrari in recent years, providing a more classic and hands-on feel.

POWER & PERFORMANCE Although it would have been the experience of a lifetime to set off around a racetrack, burning rubber as we felt the G-forces tugging at our neck muscles, we have to admit that the F80’s incredible power-producing capabilities, along with its USD3.789 million price tag, were enough for us to feel content admiring it on the showroom floor.

Along with the unequalled aerodynamics, heat management properties and vehicle dynamics of this outworldly supercar, the almost unbelievable powertrain of the F80 took a few minutes to fully absorb.

For starters, Ferrari has fitted the F80 with the ultimate expression of the brand’s six-cylinder engine in the form of a three-litre 120° V6 F163CF internal combustion engine. This unit produces an astonishing peak power of 900hp, making it the Ferrari engine with the highest specific power of all time (300cv/l), to which the electric front axle (e-4WD) and rear motor 38

(MGU-K – Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic) of the hybrid system add another 300cv.

Naturally, there is also technology carried over from Formula 1, from which the F80 inherits both the concept of the MGU-K (with the development of an industrially manufacturable electric motor similar to the unit used in Ferrari F1 cars) and the MGU-Hs (which generate power from the excess kinetic energy from the rotation of the turbines created by the heat energy from the exhaust gases) with a bespoke e-turbo application.

We were informed by the Ferrari team that to maximise performance in all possible conditions, every component of the calibration of the engine has been taken to the extreme, with a particular focus on the ignition and injection timing, amongst other areas. Another crucial aspect has been the work dedicated to the dynamic calibration of the torque curve in every gear, an all-time first for a Ferrari road car.

Further adding to the extraordinary nature of the F80’s performance capabilities are the e-turbos, with an electric motor installed axially between the turbine and the compressor housing. This inclusion allows the engineers to optimise the fluid dynamics of the engine for maximum power at mid to high engine speeds without the usual compromise this entails in terms of turbo lag at low engine speeds.

Another five pages wouldn’t be enough to cover what the team at Ferrari has managed to accomplish with this potent powertrain, however, it would be amiss of us not to mention the fan-favourite highlights.

With a total displacement of 2,992cc, a maximum power of 900cv (almost 900hp) at 8750rpm and a maximum torque of 850Nm at 550rpm, the F80 delivers a performance that other sports car manufacturers can only dream of.

This phenomenal supercar can surge from 0-100km/h in as little as 2.15 seconds and brake from 100-0km/h in a mere 28 metres!

0-200km/h can be achieved in 5.75 seconds (a decent 0-100km/h time for any sports car) and braking from 200-0km/h takes less than 100 metres. A maximum speed of 350km/h is possible for any seasoned supercar driver who dares to do so.

OUR VERDICT: Ferrari has again accomplished what many would have deemed impossible with the new F80. In fact, we have never experienced a supercar of this calibre, and we have serious doubts that any other marque will be able to match what this exceptional brand has managed to execute, anytime soon.

riginal and playful, this watch, limited to 999 pieces, offers a unique aesthetic take of the artificial horizon, the essential plane dashboard device that allows pilots to maintain spatial orientation.

A Specific Display One of the most e m b l e m a t i c instruments on an aircraft's dashboard, the artificial horizon indicator combines the illustration of the earth and the silhouette of the aircraft, it symbolises the philosophy of instrument flight.

This figurative representation takes the form of a sphere divided by a line. The upper part, blue, represents the sky, while the lower part, dark, symbolises the earth. In the centre, the aircraft appears schematically with its wings represented by two red lines. The outer dial graduation indicates the aircraft's lateral tilt angle, while the centre one shows the pitch.

Combining the round and the square, the identity shape of the house, the BR-03 Horizon replicates the design of this highly symbolic aeronautical tool present in all cockpits.

Both sophisticated and intuitive at first glance, the new BR-03 Horizon offers easy reading thanks to the two hands adjusted to the finely graduated inner bezel. The large white hand indicates the minutes. The large black and white striped hand marks the seconds. The hour indication is directly represented by the central disk forming the dial. It features a large central indicator arrow that serves as the hour marker. The blue part of the dial is luminescent allowing the time to be read perfectly in night vision.

The 41mm case, water-resistant to 100 metres and adorned with an antireflective sapphire crystal, is dressed in micro-blasted black ceramic. The watch is equipped with the automatic mechanical movement BR.CAL-327.

Robust and inspired by pilots’ equipment, the black rubber strap is interchangeable and can be alternated with an orange Velcro option.

Limited to just 999 pieces, the new BR-03 Horizon allows the wearer to know their exact position in time at any moment and is likely to prove a must have for aviation enthusiasts.

The Holiday collection from Italian house, FENDI, plays on the brand’s heritage as it approaches its 100th anniversary.

Featuring in casual overshirts, sharply tailored trousers and a snuggly blazer, the Fendi Tartan gives a boyish feel with its grey and golden yellow tones. While the collection literally goes back to school with a varsity jacket bearing the FENDI logo.

But, as always with this luxe house, there are also the muchloved shearlings and velvet corduroys found in workwear and

snug winter jackets that hark back to the classic designs.

Accessories, too, find importance with fun fast-food inspired motifs, described by the designer as ‘Fendilicious elements’, sitting casually alongside structured bags that recall the maison’s heritage.

The palette is seasonal in greys, olives and beiges leaving the design elements to do the talking.

he first thing to know about Mondrian Doha is that it’s definitely not your average hotel, more the imaginative playground of designer Marcel Wanders, a lifestyle property where his vision comes to life in abundant spaces and cosy nooks, all with a storybook feel.

Even the exterior, by SWA architects, tells a story. The entrance resembles the beak of a falcon with the sides of the building forming sweeping wings, ready to take flight. And the sense of playfulness is immediately evident as soon as you step through the door where a large golden bell, complete with dazzling crystal chandelier in place of the clapper, hangs overhead signalling that school’s out and now it’s time for fun!

Blinding white pillars are adorned with golden eggs and a black and white floor bedecked with floral and piano key patterns leads the way to the all-day-dining restaurant, Mondrian Bistro.

On the way you’ll encounter the hotel’s famous fantastical staircase. Gleaming black against the sparkling white surroundings, and adorned with arabesque patterns, it soars four floors above the lobby and goes… nowhere. Or does it? It was described to me as ‘the staircase to your dreams’.

You climb it and take from it whatever you will. I can certainly say, it’s a wonderful spot to observe the goings on below and, perhaps, take a moment to reflect a little.

After a seamless check in, I was shown to my suite on the 12th floor and what a space it was.

More lustrous white with a huge living room area complete with dining table and two comfortable, chunky sofas. More whimsy came in the shape of golden statues resembling a dog and an elephant – two of my favourite creatures, they made me feel totally at home.

Situated around a corner was a white desk in a private area where one could work away from distractions and numerous other spaces, such as a walk-in closet with tea- and coffee-making facilities, boasted sliding doors and quirkily placed mirrors adding a sense of surprise at every turn.

The living room console proved to be my undoing with jars of nuts and sweeties – I tried hard to ignore them but the temptation of the jellybeans was just too much. So, I grabbed a handful and headed to the bedroom to explore further.

The king-size bed was extremely comfortable with its bank of fluffy pillows, but it was the wall opposite that really caught my eye and my imagination. Decked out in wallpaper portraying scenes that could easily have come from the 1001 Nights, classical Arabic characters coupled with storybook illustrations. Throughout my stay, I never tired of looking at it, each glance revealing a new element.

Soon, it was time to head to ESPA because, what’s a city break without a little pampering?

Another extraordinary space, I was soon engulfed in shimmering mosaiced walls while other areas featured bright floral-patterned tiled floors and walls – a sense of wonderment filled me, the designs literally calling out an 72

‫أول ما يجب معرفته عن فندق موندريان الدوحة هو أنه بالتأكيد‬ ‫ليس فند ًقا عاد ًيا‪ ،‬بل هو أشبه بملعب خيالي للمصمم مارسيل‬ ‫وانديرز‪ ،‬وهو مكان أنيق حيث تتحقق رؤيته في مساحات واسعة‬ ‫وزوايا مريحة‪ ،‬كلها ذات طابع خيالي‪.‬‬ ‫تروي حتى الواجهة الخارجية‪ ،‬بتصميمها المعماري من ‪،SWA‬‬ ‫فالمدخَ ل يشبه منقار صقر‪ ،‬وجوانب المبنى‬ ‫قصةً بحد ذاتها‪.‬‬ ‫َ‬ ‫كأجنحة جاهزة لالنطالق‪ .‬وبمجرد دخولك‪َ ،‬يستقبلك شعو ٌر‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫بالمرح‪ ،‬حيث يتدلى جرس ذهبي كبير‪ُ ،‬مزخرف بثريا كريستالية‬ ‫بدالً من المطرقة‪ُ ،‬معلنًا انتهاء اليوم الدراسي وبداية وقت‬ ‫اللعب والمرح!‬ ‫تقودك أعمدة بيضاء المعة‪ُ ،‬مز ّينة بأشكال بيضاوية ذهبية‪،‬‬ ‫رصعة بأنماط زهرية وأخرى تُشبه‬ ‫وأرضية سوداء وبيضاء ُم ّ‬ ‫مفاتيح البيانو‪ ،‬إلى مطعم موندريان بيسترو الذي يقدم الطعام‬ ‫على مدار الساعة‪.‬‬ ‫على طول الطريق‪ ،‬ستُ شاهد الدرج الخيالي الشهير بالفندق‪.‬‬ ‫ُيز ّين هذا الدرج األسود الالمع‪ ،‬على خلفية بيضاء براقة‪ ،‬بأنماط‬ ‫عربية‪ ،‬ويتصاعد ألربعة طوابق فوق اللوبي‪ ،‬دون أن يصل إلى أي‬ ‫مكان‪ ...‬أم أنه يصل؟ لقد ُو ِصف لي بأنه "درج أحالمك"‪ ،‬تُصعده‬ ‫وتأخذ منه ما تشاء‪ .‬بالتأكيد‪ ،‬إنه مكان رائع لمشاهدة ما يجري‬ ‫باألسفل‪ ،‬وربما‪ ،‬لالسترخاء والتأمل قلي ً‬ ‫ال‪.‬‬ ‫بعد تسجيل وصول سلس‪ ،‬تفقدت جناحي في الطابق الثاني‬ ‫عشر‪ ،‬فوجدته رحبًا وواسعًا! سيطر اللون األبيض الالمع على‬ ‫منطقة المعيشة الضخمة‪ ،‬التي تضم طاولة طعام وأريكتين‬ ‫كبيرتين مريحين‪ .‬وقد زاد من سحر المكان وجود تماثيل ذهبية‬ ‫على شكل كلب وفيل – من مخلوقاتي المفضلة – مما جعلني‬ ‫أشعر وكأنني في بيتي‪.‬‬ ‫يقع في ركن من أركان الغرفة مكتب أبيض‪ ،‬ضمن منطقة‬ ‫خاصة ت ّ‬ ‫ُمكن من العمل بعيدًا عن اإللهاءات‪ .‬وتتميز العديد من‬ ‫المساحات األخرى‪ ،‬كخزانة المالبس الواسعة و مرافق تحضير‬ ‫الشاي والقهوة‪ ،‬بأبواب منزلقة ومرآة موضوعة بشكل غير‬ ‫تقليدي مما يضيف لمسة مفاجأة في كل زاوية‪.‬‬ ‫أثبتت وحدة التحكم في غرفة المعيشة أنها اختبا ٌر لي مع‬ ‫جاهدة‬ ‫حاولت‬ ‫مرطبانات مليئة بالمكسرات والحلويات ‪-‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تجاهلها‪ ،‬لكن إغراء حلوى الجيلي كان أقوى من إرادتي‪ .‬لذا‪،‬‬ ‫وذهبت إلى غرفة النوم الستكشف المزيد‪.‬‬ ‫بقبضة منها‪،‬‬ ‫كبشت‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫كان سرير الكينج سايز مريحًا للغاية‪ُ ،‬مزودًا بمجموعة من‬ ‫الوسائد الناعمة‪ ،‬لكن الجدار المقابل هو الذي لفت انتباهي‬ ‫مشاهد تُشبه‬ ‫صور‬ ‫وخيالي حقً ا‪ .‬فقد كان ُمز ّينًا بورق جدران ُي ّ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫تلك الواردة في ألف ليلة وليلة‪ ،‬شخصيات عربية كالسيكية‬ ‫ُمقترنة برسوم توضيحية خيالية‪ .‬لم أمل خالل إقامتي من النظر‬ ‫إليه‪ ،‬إذ تكشف كل نظرة عن تفاصيل جديدة‪.‬‬ ‫سرعان ما حان الوقت للتوجه إلى منتجع ‪ ،ESPA‬فما هي عطلة‬ ‫المدينة بدون قليل من التدليل؟ مساحة استثنائية أخرى‪،‬‬ ‫غمرتني جدرانها المزخرفة بالفسيفساء المتأللئة‪ ،‬بينما تضمنت‬ ‫مناطق أخرى أرضيات وجدران من البالط بأنماط زهرية زاهية‪.‬‬ ‫مألني المكان بإحساسًا بالدهشة‪ ،‬حيث يدعو تصاميمه حرفيًا‬ ‫إلى االسترخاء وتسليم الحواس للمحيط الرائع‪.‬‬ ‫عمقة‪ ،‬أوضحت‬ ‫بعد مشروب ترحيبي منعش وجلسة استشارة ُم ّ‬ ‫المعالجة يسرا أن جميع المنتجات المستخدمة من ماركة‬ ‫لي ُ‬ ‫المتعب على وشك الحصول على‬ ‫‪ ESPA‬الفاخرة‪ ،‬وأن وجهي ُ‬ ‫عناية جادة (وطال انتظارها)‪.‬‬ ‫بعد تنظيف شامل ولطيف‪ ،‬فحصت يسرا بشرتي تحت ضوء‬ ‫أبيض‪ ،‬وأخبرتني أنها ستُ ط ّبق منتجات لن تتسبب بسد‬ ‫المسام‪ ،‬غنية بالكوالجين وحمض الهيالورونيك‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى‬ ‫تقنية تدليك الوجه اليابانية "كوبيدو"‪ ،‬التي تُحفّ ز تجديد البشرة‬ ‫مع الشد والتصريف اللمفاوي إلزالة السموم‪.‬‬ ‫اختارت يسرا مقشرًا لطيفًا للوجه‪ ،‬يحتوي على أنزيمات اليقطين‬ ‫سطحي ُمضيء‪.‬‬ ‫قناع‬ ‫والجوجوبا‪ ،‬تاله زيت مغذٍّ غني‪ ،‬قبل وضع‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫كان القناع باردًا عند وضعه‪ ،‬ولم أكن أدرك مدى جفاف بشرتي‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫منظف‬ ‫حتى شعرت بالرطوبة تتغلغل في مسامي‪ .‬تبع ذلك‬ ‫للعين بروبيوتيك‪ ،‬مع تونر منعش ُم ّ‬ ‫ليختتم‬ ‫رطب من الزهور‪ُ ،‬‬ ‫العالج بتنظيف الشفتين ببلسم االترنج الوردي‪.‬‬ ‫بصراحة‪ ،‬جعلتني التجربة بأكملها أبدو وأشعر كأنني امرأة‬ ‫جديدة‪ُ ،‬مستعدة لموعدي المسائي في مطعم موريموتو الرائع‪.‬‬ ‫شعر أول مطعم للطاهي الياباني األسطوري ماساهارو‬ ‫ُي ِ‬ ‫موريموتو في الشرق األوسط المرء وكأنه في منزله‪ ،‬ضمن‬ ‫إطار فندق موندريان الدوحة الخيالي‪ .‬تدخل عبر ممر ذهبي‬ ‫اللون‪ ،‬لتُ قا ِبل مباشر ًة مطبخًا مفتوحًا نابضًا بالحياة‪ ،‬يواجهه‬ ‫بار السوشي‪.‬‬ ‫ُيظهر نشاط المطبخ عدد الطهاة الضروري إلنتاج قائمة طعام‬ ‫عالية الجودة بشكل استثنائي‪ .‬ورغم طابع ديكور مطعم‬ ‫موريموتو الكالسيكي‪ ،‬إال أن إضافة ثريا مذهلة ضخمة‪ ،‬مصنوعة‬ ‫من فانوس عربي المع‪ ،‬تُضفي على المكان لمسة خاصة‪ ،‬وتُشير‬

invitation to relax and surrender my senses to the exquisite surroundings.

After a refreshing welcome drink and an in-depth consultation, my therapist, Yousra, explained that all products used are from the premium ESPA brand and my tired face was about to get some serious (much-needed) attention.

After a thorough but gentle cleansing, Yousra examined my skin under white light and said she would apply non-comedogenic products, containing collagen and hyaluronic acid, that would not block my pores, combined with kobido, a Japanese facial massage technique aimed at encouraging facial regeneration with lifting and lymphatic drainage to flush and detox.

She chose a gentle facial scrub with pumpkin and jojoba enzymes followed by rich replenishing oil before applying a brightening surface mask. It was cool going on and I had not realised how parched my skin was until I felt the moisture seeping into my pores. A probiome eye cleaner came next with a hydrating floral spa fresh toner to finish before my lips were brushed with pink pomelo balm.

I can honestly say the whole experience left me looking and feeling like a new woman, ready for my evening’s date at the wonderful Morimoto.

The first restaurant in the Middle East from the legendary Japanese Master Chef Masaharu Morimoto feels right at home in the fantastical setting of Mondrian Doha. You enter through a golden hued, mirrored corridor and the first sight is of a buzzing open kitchen fronted by a sushi counter.

The numerous chefs required to produce the exceptionally high-quality menu is evident from the kitchen activity and, though the restaurant’s décor is very much classic Morimoto, the addition 74

of a stunning, large chandelier constructed of glittering Arabic-style lanterns gives a sense of place and a nod to local heritage.

There are special nights throughout the week, such as Sushi & Steak Sundays and Rolls & Ramen Tuesdays, but we chose to go for a tasting selection from the à la carte menu, suggested by Restaurant Manager Paulo Bastos, which proved to be an excellent decision.

We started with the salmon poke tacos – crunchy mini taco shells bursting with flavour from the perfectly seasoned fish which was offset beautifully by the cool creaminess of avocado.

Next up was Wagyu Carpaccio; melting, buttery, well-marbled meat topped with citrussy yuzu zest that literally danced across the taste buds with its echoes of cilantro, daikon and chives.

A selection of sushi followed with the standout being aburi salmon with truffle, oh be still my beating heart as I remember that superbly satisfying flavour as the deep richness of the fungi combined with the salty tartness of the fish. The sushi was accompanied by an equally impressive lobster tempura with yuzu koshu dip. Spicy and flavourful, it was utterly delicious.

We finished our savouries with thinly sliced A5 Waygu cooked on a hot stone at our table. The meat was so tender it hardly required chewing, the juices flowing abundantly, a testament to the generous marbling.

After such a feast, I must confess I was ready to sleep and I nodded off immediately as soon as I reached my uber comfortable bed.

Morning brought the breakfast experience at Mondrian Bistro, where I was faced with charming attentive staff and possibly the largest breakfast spread I have come across in my

‫إلى التراث المحلي‪.‬‬ ‫ليال خاصة خالل األسبوع‪ ،‬كليالي "سوشي وستيك" أيام‬ ‫توجد‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫األحد‪ ،‬وليالي "رولز ورامين" أيام الثالثاء‪ .‬لكننا اخترنا ان نتذوق‬ ‫من قائمة الطعام حسب الطلب‪ ،‬اقترحها مدير المطعم باولو‬ ‫باستوس‪ ،‬وقد تبين أنها خيار ممتاز‪.‬‬ ‫بدأنا بتاكو السلمون‪ :‬قشور تاكو صغيرة مقرمشة‪ ،‬تتفجر‬ ‫بشكل جميل‬ ‫المتبل بشكل مثالي‪ُ ،‬مقدمة‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫بنكهة السمك ُ‬ ‫بكريمة األفوكادو الباردة‪ .‬ثم تاله طبق كارباكيو واغيو‪ :‬لحم‬ ‫بشكل جيد‪ُ ،‬م ّ‬ ‫غطى بقشر اليوزو الحمضي‬ ‫ذائب‪ ،‬طري‪ُ ،‬متبل‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫الذي أضفى نكهةً رائعةً ‪ُ ،‬معزّزًا بنكهة الكزبرة‪ ،‬والدايكون‪،‬‬ ‫والبصل األخضر‪.‬‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫باقة من أطباق السوشي‪ ،‬أبرزها سلمون أبوري مع‬ ‫تلت ذلك‬ ‫الكمأة (الترافل)‪ .‬ال أنسى حتى اآلن تلك النكهة الرائعة التي‬ ‫جمعت بين نكهة الفطر الغنية العميقة وطعم السمك المالح‪.‬‬ ‫المذهل بنفس القدر‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫قدم السوشي مع طبق تمبورا االستاكوزا‪ُ ،‬‬ ‫وصلصة اليوزو كوشو الحارة واللذيذة‪.‬‬ ‫اختتمنا أطباقنا المالحة بشرائح رقيقة من لحم واغيو ‪،A5‬‬ ‫مطبوخة على حجر ساخن على طاولتنا‪ .‬كان اللحم طريًا للغاية‪،‬‬ ‫يكاد ال يحتاج للمضغ‪ ،‬مع تدفق العصائر بكثرة‪ ،‬مما يدل على‬ ‫المتقن‪.‬‬ ‫تمليحه ُ‬ ‫غفوت فور‬ ‫كنت ُمنهكةً ‪ ،‬وقد‬ ‫بعد هذه الوليمة‪ ،‬اعترف بأنني‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫وصولي إلى سريري المريح‪.‬‬ ‫جلب الصباح تجربة إفطار رائعة في مطعم موندريان بيسترو‪،‬‬ ‫وواجهت ربما‬ ‫حيث استقبلني طاقم عمل لطيف جدا وودود‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫أكبر بوفيه إفطار رأيته في حياتي‪ .‬كانت األطعمة ُمرتبة بشكل‬ ‫جميل‪ ،‬ويوفر البوفية كل ما تشتهيه‪ ،‬من الخبز والمعجنات‬ ‫الطازجة إلى الفواكه والخضروات‪ .‬وضعت اللحوم الباردة بجانب‬ ‫العسل واألجبان‪ ،‬والنقانق واللحم المقدد مع البطاطس المقلية‬ ‫دللت نفسي حقًا واخترت طبقا من قائمة اإلفطار الخاصة‬ ‫والفطر‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫مكون من جبنة الحلوم المقدمة على خبز التوست المحمص‬ ‫واالفوكادو المهروسة مع خضراوات صغيرة وبيضة مسلوقة‬ ‫بشكل مثالي‪ ...‬وجبة سعيدة لبدء يوم جميل‪.‬‬ ‫علوي‬ ‫فاخر‬ ‫جناح‬ ‫بجولة في الفندق‪ ،‬لزيارة‬ ‫حظيت‬ ‫بعد ذلك‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ٍّ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫رائع ‪ -‬أكبر حتى من جناحي الخاص‪ ،‬والمسبح الشهير‪ .‬مسبح‬ ‫استثنائي حقًا‪ ،‬مساحة تعكس تمامًا عناصر‬ ‫شيء‬ ‫موندريان‬ ‫ٌّ‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫بنقوش‬ ‫أرضيات سوداء وبيضاء‬ ‫التصميم في أرجاء الفندق‪.‬‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫لونة‪ُ ،‬مز ّينة‬ ‫هندسية‪ ،‬كمفاتيح بيانو تقع أسفل‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫قبة زجاجية ُم ّ‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫منطقة‬ ‫بثريات كريستالية تتألأل على المياه الزرقاء أدناه‪ .‬إنها‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ُي ّ‬ ‫ضيوف يرتدون‬ ‫نظم فيها الفندق فعاليات‪ ،‬وأستطيعُ تخ ّيل‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫مالبس مصممين في هذا اإلطار الخيالي‪.‬‬ ‫سري‬ ‫ترفيهي‬ ‫أيضا بزيارة "الدخان والمرايا" ‪ -‬وهو مكان‬ ‫قمنا ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ومخ ّبأ‪ ،‬يشبه حانةً قديمة‪ .‬التحدي‪ ،‬إن قبلتُ م‪ ،‬هو ببساطة‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫العثور عليه‪.‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫حيث‬ ‫أمضيت أمسيتي الثانية في مطعم هادسون تافرن‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫شاء ُم ّ‬ ‫بك ٍر من قائمة الطعام‬ ‫دعيت أنا وصديقي لتناول ِع‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫االحتفالية‪ .‬بدأنا بسلطة اليقطين اللذيذة التي استمتعنا بها‬ ‫مشوي مع جميع المكونات‬ ‫ثم تالها ديك رومي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫طوال الوجبة‪ّ .‬‬ ‫المرافقة‪ ،‬كالبازالء مع قطع اللحم المقدد‪ ،‬والبروكلي المقرمش‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ومرق لذيذ النكهة‪.‬‬ ‫وبطاطس مهروسة كريمية‪،‬‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫لست من ُمحبي الطعام االحتفالي‬ ‫يجب أن أعترف بأنني‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫التقليدي‪ ،‬لكن الديك الرومي كان طريًا ولذيذًا‪ ،‬والخضروات‬ ‫كانت مثالية‪ .‬واألفضل من ذلك‪ُ ،‬يمكن طلب كل شيء جاهزًا‪،‬‬ ‫المضيف أو المضيفةَ بأشهى األطباق على مائدة عيدك‬ ‫لتكون‬ ‫َ‬ ‫َ‬ ‫طويلة في المطبخ ‪ -‬أنصح أيضًا بتجربة لحم‬ ‫ساعات‬ ‫دون قضاء‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫البقر‪ ،‬فقد قيل لي إنه رائع‪ ،‬والوجبة بأكملها ذات قيمة ممتازة‪.‬‬ ‫كانت المحطة األخيرة في زيارتي لتناول شاي ما بعد الظهيرة في‬ ‫صالة ‪ EllaMia‬الساحرة‪ .‬تقع منطقة جلوس واسعة بجوار اللوبي‪،‬‬ ‫وتُز ّين المساحة بأشجار بيضاء منحوتة وعناصر غريبة أخرى‪.‬‬ ‫تستمر روعة السرد حتى في الطعام‪ ،‬مع شطائر من الخبز بألوان‬ ‫زاهية ‪ -‬أحمر وأبيض وأخضر ‪ -‬وكعكات مثالية معروضة على‬ ‫طبق فطيرة‬ ‫أطباق من الخزف العظمي الزهري الرقيق‪ .‬كان‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫قدمة في عجينة قصيرة على سرير من كريمة‬ ‫الم ّ‬ ‫التوت األزرق ُ‬ ‫الباستري‪ُ ،‬مغطاة برقائق الذهب‪ ،‬هو المفضل لدي‪.‬‬ ‫جدا كقطعة فنية بحيث يحرم عليك‬ ‫كان األمر برمته جمي ًلا ً‬ ‫لمسة‪ ،‬لكنه في الحقيقة كان لذيذًا جدًا لدرجة أنه كان من‬ ‫المستحيل مقاومة تناوله‪.‬‬ ‫توجهت إلى‬ ‫وبذلك‪ ،‬وببطن ممتلئة وذكريات رائعة ألرويها‪،‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫عاهدة نفسي بالعودة‪ ،‬فأنا أظن أنني لم أستكشف‬ ‫المطار ُم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫سوى القليل من قصص موندريان الدوحة‪.‬‬ ‫لمزيد من المعلومات‪ ،‬تفضل بزيارة‬

wanderings so far. All beautifully laid out, there was everything a girl could want, from fresh bread and pastries to fruits and vegetables. Cold cuts sat alongside honeycomb and cheeses, sausages and bacon with hash browns and sautéed mushrooms.

I was honestly spoilt for choice and decided to go for the Halloumi Avocado Toast from the special breakfast menu. Served on sourdough with smashed avocado, grilled halloumi and microgreens topped with a perfectly poached egg, it was a little taste of happiness to start the day.

Afterwards, I was lucky enough to take a hotel tour visiting the gorgeous Deluxe Loft Suite – even grander than my own, if that’s possible – and the famed pool. The Mondrian pool is really something else, a space that completely reflects the design elements throughout the property.

Black and white floors in checkered and piano key patterns sit beneath a stained-glass dome complete with crystal chandeliers that glitter on the blue waters below. It’s an area in which the hotel organises events and I could just imagine designer-clad guests in this fairy-tale setting.

We also visited Smoke & Mirrors – a secret, hidden entertainment spot, like an old fashioned speakeasy. The challenge, should you accept it, is simply to find it.

My second evening was spent at Hudson Tavern, where myself and my dining companion were given an early taste of the festive menu. We began with a delicious pumpkin salad, to which we returned throughout the meal. Roast turkey with all the trimmings followed, accompanied by peas with bacon bits, crunchy broccoli, creamy mashed potatoes and a deliciously flavoursome gravy.

I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of traditional festive fare, but the turkey was moist and moreish and the veggies were spot on. And, even better, the whole thing can be ordered to go, so you can be the host or hostess with the moistest at your holiday table without the long hours in the kitchen – you should also check out the brisket, I’m told it’s amazing and the whole meal is great value.

The final stop of my visit was for afternoon tea in the enchanted forest of EllaMia. An expansive seating area neighbouring the lobby, the space is dotted with sculptural white trees and other whimsical elements.

The storytelling continues even in the food with sandwiches on brightly coloured breads – red, white and green – and picture-perfect cakes presented on delicate, floral bone china.

My favourite was the blueberry pie presented in shortcrust pastry on a bed of crème patisserie and topped with flecks of gold foil.

The whole thing was almost too pretty to eat, but only almost, it was actually too delicious not to.

And so, with tummy full and tales of wonderment to tell, I headed to the airport with a vow to return, as I suspect I have only scratched the surface of Mondrian Doha’s stories.

t HADAG, we are partial to both fashion and luxury destinations. This month, thanks to the team at the Portrait Milano, not only did we get to travel to one of the most sought-after destinations in Europe but to stay at one of the finest hotels in one of the most famous fashion hubs on the planet.

Perfect Location Upon arrival, we were in awe of the flawless design and welcoming feel of the hotel. It was immediately apparent to us why this glamorous venue is an award-winning property and regarded as amongst the very finest hotels in the city. In fact, Portrait Milano is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

Located in one of the oldest seminaries in Europe, Portrait Milano provides an oasis of intimacy, tranquillity and timeless elegance. It is also situated mere steps away from the most prestigious shopping destinations in Milan.

One of our favourite features of the hotel was that it overlooks the city's newest attraction, the Piazza del Quadrilatero. At 2,800sq/m, this new promenade connects Corso Venezia to Via Sant'Andrea and is the largest and most original square in the fashion district.

High-end Hospitality From our first contact with staff, we experienced the quintessential Italian hospitality. We were treated as valued guests and felt well taken care of from the moment we arrived.

After an effortless booking-in process, we were accompanied to our rooms. En route, our helpful bellman cheerfully educated us on the design and layout of this magnificent venue.

We were also fortunate enough to be given a tour of the property during our stay.

Design & Décor This four-story, five-star hotel consists of 73 lavish suites, family suites and rooms, all of which were constructed with luxury and comfort in mind. The rooms range from 32sq/m to 165sq/m, each providing the desired combination of privacy and silence.

The 27 rooms on the second floor include garden-view accommodations that provide glimpses of this secret oasis in the city's heart, with splendid terraces often present.

The interior design of the rooms was inspired by the city's 1950s’ parlours and exhibit accents such as beautiful Italian walnut wood. These historical references are enhanced by Florentine craftsmanship. Clear examples include the leather and bronzed brass handles on the front doors, cabinets and sliding doors.

The flooring is natural larch, in running planks typical of Northern European houses and castles. Bathrooms are predominantly in bright white Carrara marble, whilst others present a combination of Red Porphyry and Breccia Medicea.

Focussing on the colour palate, the predominance of red alternates with green. These complementary colours are often found in Milanese houses and are deeply connected to the city.

Deluxe Accommodation The moment we stepped into the Studio Deluxe Garden Suite, it was obvious we were in for a delightful stay.

Along with the iconic Italian design and layout of the accommodation, this comfortable and well-lit room housed a king-size bed that ensured two of the best nights’ sleep we have experienced in quite some time.

The superbly designed bathroom featured floor-to-ceiling Carrara marble and an oversized shower providing excellent water pressure.

A garden-view terrace added a magnificent touch to an already outstanding quarter.

Throughout the stay, we enjoyed several cappuccinos overlooking the beautiful greenery.

Fine-Dining Not content with merely providing some of the most picturesque and comfortable accommodations in Milan, the hotel also showcases a fantastic dining venue, namely 10_11.

We appreciated how the restaurant's garden, restaurant and colonnade blend to emphasise the imposing architecture through elegant and sophisticated details. The menu is inspired by traditional Italian cuisine that evokes the feeling of good home-cooked meals that you share with your family on a Sunday afternoon. As invited guests of the hotel, we were treated to a sumptuous five-course meal.

For the first course, we partook in an authentic veal tonne that proved both succulent and delicious. This was the perfect appetiser to stimulate the senses.

Another appetiser made up the second course, this time in the form of beef tartare prepared tableside with the choice of egg, anchovies, capers, parsley and mustard seed.

On to the mains, we were spoilt with a delicious hanger steak and turnip tops. We have never had a piece of meat prepared to such perfection.

Already satisfied, it was time for not one but two desserts.

Gelato ice cream with sour cherries started the sweet portion of the meal, followed closely by an almond crumble with caramelised apples, fior di latte ice cream and salted caramel. A truly memorable experience for our palates.

The Longevity Spa The Longevity Spa is a metropolitan wellness oasis born from biohacking high-tech and a holistic vision of wellness. It includes a wet area with a swimming pool, steam room, sauna and relaxation area, a gym and treatment rooms. Portrait Milano is the first hotel in the world to host The Longevity Suite, an advanced European network of biohacking and anti-ageing city clinics.

We were fortunate enough to experience the Ultimate Biohacking 30-minute treatment. This therapy is based on Dry Float Therapy (which uses a bed that suspends your body, creating a weightless feeling), a technological innovation that harnesses the benefits of floating in sensory deprivation to produce positive effects on sleep, concentration and mental and physical recovery.

Near Infra-Red (NIR) Total Body technology stimulates the body's natural processes using red light and non-ionising electromagnetic radiation, improving circulation and relieving muscle and joint pain.

Time to Go After the second night of our unforgettable stay at this uniquely beautiful hotel, it was hard to say goodbye to this enchanting location and leave behind such a serene and luxurious environment.

Once on the plane, we were already expressing our desire to plan a return visit to this magical accommodation and beautiful city.

Harbin, China Harbin may not be as famous as other Asian cities but, come the frigid temperatures and it transforms into a dazzling icy wonderland that rivals the best of them. Known for its annual Ice and Snow Festival, this is where the cold season gets an artistic makeover.

Prague, Czech Republic Prague’s holiday markets are among the most picturesque in Europe, where Gothic architecture meets the sparkle of pretty lights.

The market at Old Town Square transports you into a fairy-tale setting with the Church of Our Lady before Týn as its backdrop. At its centre stands a huge festive tree, adorned with thousands of lights, attracting crowds for a wonderful atmosphere of carols, music and dance. The stalls here are a treasure trove of Bohemian glass, ceramics, lace embroidery, wooden toys and hand-painted ornaments.

Foodies can also savour traditional Czech treats, such as rybí polévka (fish soup), trdelník (sweet chimney cakes) and pernícky (spicy gingerbread). Wash these down with a cup of delicious horká cokoláda (hot chocolate) or svarák, the local mulled grape.

Another must-visit is the Wenceslas Square market, a short walk from Old Town Square.

While smaller, it offers a cosier atmosphere and a wide array of locally crafted goods. Its proximity to luxury boutiques makes it a convenient stop for those looking to mix traditional holiday shopping with high-end finds.

For a quieter yet equally magical experience, head to Castle Hill near Prague Castle. This market not only offers stunning views over the city but also provides a peaceful retreat from the main tourist spots, with a selection of unique festive items and artisan crafts.

Frankfurt Festive Market

Germany Renowned worldwide, Germany’s festive market tradition began in the late Middle Ages.

Bathed in history and charm, each town and city has its own unique take on holiday celebrations.

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, one of the country’s oldest and most famous markets, is a bucket-list destination. Found in Hauptmarkt Square, it features traditional wooden stalls with red-and-white striped awnings, handcrafted gifts, decorations and sweets. Visitors can sample authentic Nuremberg lebkuchen (gingerbread), Spekulatius almond cookies and mulled grape. Don’t forget to pick up a handmade Rauschgoldengel (gold-foil angel) as a keepsake. It runs until December 24 and opens daily from 10am to 9pm, closing at 8pm on the final day.

Frankfurt holiday market is another favourite, celebrated for its festive decorations and live musical performances. Set against the backdrop of Römerberg and St. Paul's Square, it offers a variety of handcrafted ornaments, wooden toys and seasonal treats like Bethmännchen marzipan cookies. A towering decorative tree and performances by local choirs and orchestras add to the magical holiday atmosphere. The market runs until December 22, from 10am to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 10pm on weekends.

onight, I make my way into Msheireb under a waning crescent moon, where the beam of light reflected by this moon, or ‘Liang’ in Chinese, rests over the Plaza.

Appropriate then, that we are setting our sights on Liang at Mandarin Oriental, Doha, where Chef Thomas Fong is waiting for us with the best of his menu.

Our wonderful server is an absolute fountain of knowledge for every item and ingredient lucky enough to find its way onto Liang’s menu. The gentle hum of voices and unobtrusive music are the backdrop to the convivial atmosphere. This elegant restaurant feels both intimate and homely.

Our dinks arrive, and we are treated to Asian twists on of some of the classics, where ingredients such as pandan (the fragrant leaf), aloe vera, coconut, matcha and lemongrass are firm features.

Our server insists we try as many dishes as humanly possible, so we buckle up (or perhaps that should be unbuckle?!) as dish after dish appears. First up are the soups – we try Hot and Sour and Sweetcorn Soup with Scallops and Shrimps. The former contains white and black pepper for the hot and black vinegar for the sour – the heat rises and falls with each mouthful and the silk-like ribbons of tofu, egg whites, chicken and shitake mushrooms make it a broth that packs a hearty punch. For the less spicily inclined, the sweetcorn soup is mild and reminiscent of warming meals by a fire, with the added decadence of scallops and shrimps melded in.

tour of Liang Stir-Fried Wagyu Beef Rib-Eye (A5-grade Australian Wagyu with flavoursome garlic chips on every bite) and Baked Creamy King Crab and Scallop (Alaskan king crab and Japanese scallops with a melt-in-your-mouth cheesy bechamel and crispy topping). We try both fried and steamed dim sum, and neither disappoints. We love the Taro Puffs (gently purple, taro root vegetable, combined with water chestnuts, carrots and soy, and encased in a crispy, wispy coating of cornstarch and water) and Baked Wagyu Puffs. The Wagyu puffs are an especial delight, with their layers upon layers of spinach puff pastry sheets, encrusted at either end with black sesame seeds, holding nuggets of Wagyu beef, onion, spring onion and oyster sauce. The craftsmanship that has gone into creating them is fine and delicate and the flavours are perfectly balanced.

Steamed dim sum is up next and, oh my. If you are a dumpling fan, then this is the place for you. We try Har Gau – light and al dente crystal shrimp and bamboo dumplings, served with Liang’s signature XO sauce (dried scallops, shrimps, mushrooms, garlic and chili, mixed with a delicate chili oil, for a warming, extra bite), and then we try Liang Xiao Long Bao, a signature dish. For the uninitiated, there is a technique to consumption – use your chopsticks to ease the dumpling onto your spoon (not too near the bottom of the dumpling or the soup within will soon be without!), pop a little sauce of your choice (we choose XO), make a small hole in the dumpling to let the soup run out and then enjoy. The chicken and umami are a winning combination, and we think that dumplings cannot get any better than this.

Arguably no Chinese meal is complete without Peking Duck – a mainstay of this wonderful cuisine. We opt for the Half Duck, and it is well worth the 60 minutes required for Chef Thomas and his team to produce this tender, mildly pink, glorious bird. The duck is imported from Bangkok, carved at the table with an impressive Chinese knife, and served with 10 pancakes, home-made hoisin sauce, cucumber and leek. The leek is a wonderful amendment to the traditional spring onion, as the bite of the flavour is there, but none of that lasting oniony taste, and the hoisin sauce has secret elements of sweet potato, soy beans and chilli pepper to lift the traditional sweetness. And it is a twocourse extravaganza. Once we’ve eaten our fill of pancakes, the duck extras are stripped, diced and cooked with mushrooms, pine nuts, carrots celery and green onion, and then served with ‘lettuce leaf wraps’. Not only delicious, but a way of making absolutely certain that no part of this delectable duck goes to waste.

We are further treated to Kung Pao Tiger Prawns, where the sweet chilli sauce contains osmanthus syrup (a flower native to China that gently floral flavours with notes of apricot, orange and peach). These prawns are to die for – they are succulent, al dente and really rather marvellous. Our mains are rounded off with Sichuan Wok-Fried Spicy Chicken, Sizzling Mushrooms, Stir-Fried Shanghai Pak Choy and Liang Fried Rice. All house wonderful ingredients such as flavoursome chicken thigh (Sichuan Chicken), apricot chilli (Sizzling Mushrooms), smooth ginger (Pak Choy), and scallops and freshly steamed asparagus (Fried 92

In Japan, Itadakimasu is spoken before meals as a way to express gratitude – not just to the chef but to everyone involved in bringing the meal to the table, from farmers to fishmongers. It sets the tone for an experience that is more than just eating; it's about savouring, appreciating and immersing oneself in the food. With this in mind, I stepped into Mirai Restaurant & Lounge, a Japanese haven in the heart of Bahrain’s Block 338, eager to indulge in the new additions and best-sellers.

From the moment I walked in, the serene yet stylish space instantly transported me to Japan.

Hanging barrels, bamboo accents, minimalist wooden furniture and the sushi chef at the live counter crafting plates with precision – all added to the authentic experience. The soft lighting and the calm hum of the space created an elegant, Zen atmosphere that promised a great afternoon.

Chef Junior Gomez greeted my dining partners and me, clearly excited to spoil us with his culinary creations. We were seated by a window where the natural light filtered through, and naturally, the afternoon started with drinks.

And let me tell you, these weren't just your run-of-the-mill beverages. My favourite had to be the Hibiscus Collins. A bright, bubbly mix of hibiscus tea, lemon, sugar, aquafaba and sparkling water, it was a refreshing burst of sour and sweet with every sip. A perfect start to the meal. The Yuzu Lemonade followed closely behind. This sour and zesty drink, with its unique tang of yuzu and lemon soda, was the ideal palate cleanser, sharp yet not overpowering. For those who prefer something more tropical, the Mango Chili was a surprising delight – sweet mango balanced by the subtle warmth of chilli syrup, with coriander and lime, adding a refreshing twist. Finally, the Açaininja, a fruity combination of acai, blueberry, lychee and lemon soda, was light, crisp and an excellent thirst-quencher for a humid Bahraini day.

Once the drinks had us suitably refreshed, it was time to dive into the food. We started with the Yuzu Edamame. A classic, yes, but the addition of fresh yuzu juice and sesame gave this familiar dish a bright, citrusy twist.

Each bite was a burst of flavour that perfectly complemented the drinks. It's funny how something so simple can be so satisfying.

The Tako Salad was next, and it did not disappoint.

A delightful mix of textures, the tender octopus was perfectly paired with crisp Frisée lettuce, chicory, crunchy edamame beans and many other fresh vegetables. The Goma mirin dressing had a gentle sweetness that enhanced the veggies without overpowering the delicate seafood. If you're someone who enjoys the play of different textures in your food, this salad is a must-try.

The Chicken Gyoza followed. These were little pockets of joy – grilled to golden perfection, crispy on the outside but soft and juicy inside.

The spicy ponzu dressing was the real star here, adding a zesty kick that elevated the flavours to new heights. And just when I thought things couldn't get better, the Lobster Bao Buns arrived. Fluffy bao, filled with blanched Omani lobster and crunchy Hadag Magazine

lolo bionde lettuce, drizzled with lemon soy dressing. It was indulgent but not overwhelmingly so, making it a must-try for seafood lovers.

Now, for the sushi. It was difficult to choose from the extensive platter, but I started with the Kari Kari Maki, filled with crispy salmon skin and topped with crab stick and yuzu kosho mayo.

The Chuka Nagi Maki came next, with shrimp tempura and cucumber inside, topped with grilled unagi and dressed in Chuka wakame. The pop of tobiko mayo and the sweet heat from sweet chilli pepper brought this dish together in an explosion of textures and flavours.

However, the highlight of the sushi spread for me was the Spicy Hamachi Maki. Torched hamachi, prawn katsu, kimchi sauce, sriracha mayo and fresh green jalapeño – each bite had a spicy kick that kept me coming back for more.

The O-toro, Chu-toro and Bluefin Tuna Nigiri were an indulgent treat as well, the rich, buttery texture of the fish melting in my mouth with every bite. A pleasant surprise accompanied the sushi – the wasabi root, freshly grated at the table, offering a more nuanced heat than the usual paste, taking things a notch higher. Even the vegetarian offerings, like the baked sweet potato, were exceptional. Grilled over charcoal and brushed with shiso butter and togarashi, the vegetable had a smoky, caramelised edge that was impossible to resist.

The main courses were nothing short of spectacular. The Wagyu 10+ was grilled to perfection over Japanese briquette charcoal.

The marbling of the purebred Australian Wagyu ensured each bite was an unforgettable melt-in-your-mouth experience, bursting with rich, smoky flavours. Accompanied by mixed mushrooms and a yuzu kosho glaze, the dish was the very definition of umami. For seafood lovers, the Black Cod marinated in Den miso for 24 hours was another highlight. The miso infused the fish with a sweet, complex depth, making each bite of the flaky, buttery meat a true delight.

Though I was nearing my limit, there was no way I could skip dessert. And boy, am I glad I didn't.

The Creamy Vanilla Cheesecake was a treat for the senses, with its raspberry and strawberry confit adding a tart contrast to the richness. The almond crumble added a lovely crunch, and the coffee ice cream was the perfect finishing touch. For chocolate lovers, the Raspberry and Chocolate dessert, with its layers of coconut sponge, blood orange jelly and matcha crumble, was a harmonious balance of flavours and textures. However, my absolute favourite had to be the Matcha Chocolate Mousse – a decadent combination of cherry compote, hazelnut sponge and raspberry ice cream, offering the perfect blend of sweet and bitter.

From start to finish, every dish was crafted with precision and care. Whether you're after sushi, a hearty main or a sweet ending, Mirai has something for everyone. Every bite was a celebration of authenticity and, as I finished my meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experience. I left with a full stomach and a happy heart, already thinking about when I could return.
