Log off, Shut Down, Go Outside. “Think outside, no box required.” - Anon

I

can hardly get over how fast this summer has gone by. For all of us at FACT, it was filled with plenty of travelling, eating and good ol’ down time with family and friends, not to mention a lot of exploring within the GCC. We found new restaurants hidden in hotels and areas we’d never visited before. We also came across so many cool initiatives within the arts and culture scene – after all, Doha is a haven for these sorts of activities (food and fun should be the motto!). Now that the sun has settled to pave way for pleasant temperatures, we thought it only right to get you excited about the cooler months ahead. From al fresco dining to pool and beach days and outdoor activities for free, Qatar is packed with SO MUCH to see and do when the weather permits. Turn to p23 and start planning your time outside – bye bye a/c, hello breezy days! Arts takes centre stage this month too, as Qatar Museums continues its incredible programme of the Qatar-China 2016 Year of Culture. The newest exhibition to open is titled Treasures of China, on display at the museum of Islamic Art. You can read all about it on p45. This is also the month where your style change can really shine through in your everyday look. Our fashion pages are packed with new collections and pieces to inspire your autumn looks and there’s something for everyone. Begin your wardrobe change starting p67. Whilst it’s cooling down outside, Doha’s hospitality scene is turning up the heat with a slew of new dining deals and promotions to enjoy throughout October. Head to p83 and get to turning the pages to find your ideal lunch or dinner spot this month. There’s plenty more on Oktoberfest, Pinktober and other happenings throughout the magazine – take your pick! Off I go to practice my best WINTER IS COMING impression (counting down the days to GoT). Have an awesome month y’all!☺

Presented under the patronage of Qatar Museums’ Chairperson, H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, visitors will get to experience a oneof-a-kind insight into China’s celebrated civilization, right here in Doha. Divided into three parts: The Birth of Civilisation, Ceremonies and Kingdoms, Splendid Unification, Prosperity and the Silk Road and Porcelain, Imperial China and the Royal Arts, the exhibition involves all major historical periods of ancient China and displays 116 pieces dating from the Neolithic period to the Qing Dynasty, taking audiences on an unforgettable voyage through China’s past. Vivid pottery, bronzes, jades, porcelain, gold, silver, enamel and many other exquisite Chinese treasures are on show, selected from five museums and heritage institutions from across China, providing the ideal showcase for Chinese creativity and craftsmanship. REVIEWs

Big Screen Inferno What’s it about: Robert Langdon’s morals are called into question when he becomes a suspect in a deadly plot that promises to end in global disaster. He must fight against the clock to solve his most intricate riddle yet in order to save millions and guarantee his freedom. Director: Ron Howard cast: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones, Ben Foster, Irrfan Khan Why it’s worth watching? Tom Hanks is back in the role of one of his most loved characters, Robert Langdon, after a seven-year hiatus. As always, his performance is somewhat in the range of near perfect, something we’ve come to expect from the actor – especially after his other current hit Sully – but, here, it’s the addition of Felicity Jones as Dr Sienna Brooks that has us excited. Her brilliance shone through in The Theory of Everything and her performance in Inferno has shown she isn’t just a one trick pony, pulling our every sense into the role and taking us along for the ride. The storyline, although similar to the previous films, is still just as thrilling and moving. The element of uncertainty throughout keeps you right on the edge of your seat and the vast historical references will keep any keen learner occupied and enlightened. The European scenery doesn’t disappoint either, beautifully captured throughout. This film really is one for all tastes, whether you love the tension of a fast-paced thriller, or you enjoy a good brain teaser, you’re guaranteed to be left wide-eyed and mentally enriched.

Highlights “The element of uncertainty throughout keeps you right on the edge of your seat and the vast historical references will keep any keen learner occupied and enlightened.”

Boo! A Madea Halloween What’s it about: Madea is given the duty of making sure a group of unruly teens behave on Halloween, however, things take an unexpected turn when mysterious events begin to occur. After running into a whole host of paranormal beings, Madea starts to realise that the teens are going to be the least of her problems.

“Humour is the hook of this movie and there’s plenty of LOL moments that will have you curled over. ” – Boo! A Madea Halloween

Director: Tyler Perry cast: Bella Thorne, Brock O’Hurn, Tyler Perry, Jimmy Tatro Why it’s worth watching? Halloween breeds plenty of classic horror, so it’s refreshing when something a little different comes along. Humour is the hook of this movie and there’s plenty of LOL moments that will have you curled over. Yes, it’s silly but that’s exactly what it wants to be; the typically ridiculous storyline, the intentionally unrealistic costumes and the unrelenting satire all make this film addictively enjoyable. We’ve seen this formula before and without Tyler Perry’s performances, this film would be comparable to them all. His characters make this film what it is; a childishly good Halloween comedy.

BIOGRAPHY

The Gratitude Diaries By Janice Kaplan

GARAGE/DANCE INDIE/POP

Gameshow By Two Door Cinema Club

The third album from the Irish indie band takes the best of their earlier music and throws in influences from some of the greatest musicians of this century. Before its release, Alex Trimble said that this album took inspiration from the likes of Prince and Bowie, and from what we’ve heard of the album, that claim has come to fruition. There’s plenty of pop, but it’s obvious that the band has broken all barriers to go outside a number od different genres in the most unusual way doing what they feel to be right, creatively. The high-pitched vocals, teamed with upbeat guitar riffs make this album undeniably catchy, whereas the psychedelic vibes give the tracks a dreamy feel that resembles the best of the Bowie era. We can’t help but think that the record missed out on becoming a summer anthem with its Fall release, but nonetheless, it’s bound to propel Two Door Cinema Club to new musical heights.

In our modern society, gratuity can be sparse and often at times we forget how effective it can be, in all aspects of our lives. This is the notion that Janice Kaplan decided to explore one New Year’s Eve after promising herself she would live gratuitously for a year to see if it had any lasting effects. This beautifully witty diary follows her journey, seeking advice and gaining insight from the most unlikely places and allowing us to be encouraged and empowered to go and live our best life.

Following My Intuition By Craig David

Craig David has become the unlikely comeback star of the year, rebranding himself and giving us some hard-hitting performances. Given that he was one of the biggest stars of the noughties, this new album has a lot to be beat. He’s moved away from the R&B and sunk into Garage and Dance, keeping his classic melodies but combining them with MCing and elements of Rap, something that has been well-received, even by longtime fans. The new album hosts a number of collaborations from some huge Grime names, ensuring that these new tracks will be massive across the dance scene and will no doubt fill the airwaves upon release. Craig David seems to have achieved the impossible, reboot a successful music career and still be as relevant now as he was back then; this is one album to be seriously excited about.

FANTASY

Angel of Storms

By Trudi Canavan Angel of Storms continues the stories of Rielle and Tyen, two people forced into extraordinary circumstances and tasked with making the right choices, not only for themselves but also for others. Despite the two being world’s apart, Rielle being quiet and creative and Tyen being idealistic and forthright, the events that take place show that they may have more in common than first thought. Neither of them know of the other’s existence, but will their trials and tribulations finally bring them together? Read and find out!

Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island

It’s new, it’s striking and it’s the place that everyone in the UAE capital is talking about right now; enter Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island – a stunning addition to the city’s hospitality scene and the perfect place for a long weekend staycation close to home. HOTEL HOTSPOT

The name Four Seasons is synonymous with 5-star service and impressive surroundings so when we walked into the brand’s newest property in Abu Dhabi, located on the vibrant waterfront of Al Maryah Island, let’s just say that the word “wow” was uttered many times. Did we expect anything less? Absolutely not! You’ll be greeted by some of the warmest and friendliest staff as well as being offered a hot or cold towel (depending on the weather) and a welcome drink at check in. As far as first impressions go, this was pretty spectacular. The lobby is HUGE – it’s home to the beautiful Al Meylas lounge where one of the best afternoon teas in the city is served up. Stylishly decorated, for a lobby venue it’s an incredibly sophisticated and comfortable space

with natural light coming in through the tall windows. Dubbed the “living room of Abu Dhabi” where comfortable sofas and armchairs will make you feel as though you’re lounging at home, in a modern majlis setting, Al Meylas is the ideal place to marvel a sunset whilst sipping on a variety of flavourful hand-selected teas, artful coffees and non-alcoholic cocktails accompanied by sweet and savoury delicacies of Emirati cuisine with an innovative twist. We would highly recommend trying the superb Arabic afternoon tea, featuring yummy local specialties including hummus, mutabal, whole-wheat pitta and mini zaatar manakish alongside an array of sweet treats including kustawi date, almond brownies, muhallabia, rice pudding and saffron sago panna cotta – the latter was definitely our favourite! But hold on, that’s not all that makes this dining experience a special one. As an authentic gesture of hospitality, guests gathering are offered a scent from the lounge’s partner, Tola Perfumery. Tola showcases eight evocative fragrances to capture the hearts of aficionados looking for excellence, craftsmanship and genuineness. Each scent tells a story of its own. Inspired by Qahwah (Arabic coffee) and Bukhoor (incense) which remains to be the symbol of Middle Eastern hospitality and rich tradition, the Tola smelling cups, found on each Al Meylas table, have been developed to combine and capture the Gulf-ingrained customs introducing them in a unique way. If, like us, you can’t choose just the one fragrance, you can blend two together and create your very own unique Tola scent! And all of this is even before we tell you about the room!

DELIGHTFULLY DELUXE When we walk into what is to be home for the next few nights, we find the Deluxe Room to be not only practically designed, but surprisingly spacious too. There’s a lovely living area complete with a comfy sofa and a large, adjustable table for dining. A separate work area has everything you could ask for, and more, in terms of enough sockets to charge all your gadgets and devices and plenty of space to lay out important papers or books. And when you need to catch up on emails, finish a presentation or meet a deadline, just look up and out of the window at the breathtaking water views, which should help to ease any stressful situation! Everything is controlled via an iPad which really is the height of hi-tech living, and throughout our stay the controls for everything worked flawlessly (even the powered curtains). Furnishings of soothing blue and grey created a relaxing atmosphere teamed with the white and grey marble bathroom that boasts a separate deep soaking tub and shower – THIS is exactly what you need after a day of sightseeing or shopping. If that’s not enough, the bathroom also has Ferragamo amenities (generously stocked daily) and an in-mirror TV which we were enthralled by. In the room, a well-stocked refrigerated private bar and a complimentary espresso and tea maker, a 55-inch HD TV, in-room safe, bedside charging stations, and probably the most amazing thing of all, the customisable King Size Four Seasons Bed – with your choice of mattress topper, and down duvets and pillows – this made for some of the best sleeps we’ve ever had when travelling! fact magazine

SPA SENSATION

When relaxation calls, Dahlia Spa celebrates the water with abundant fountains and views of the Arabian Gulf. The eight spacious luxury spa suites – including one exclusive couples’ suite – all feature private showers and most offer windows, giving the option of natural light or soothing darkness. Here is where we experienced the innovative Signature Dahlia Massage, a customised blend of individually chosen oils and massage techniques – you’ll receive a unique treatment to suit your wellness needs. Add to that the incredible heated sand beds (with sand that is speciallyimported from Pakistan for its healing properties) and you’re in for a one-of-a-kind treatment unlike anything you’ve tried before. Afterwards make sure to check out the facilities or kickback in the relaxation lounge on the heated beds – it’s the best feeling!

DINING ON POINT Food has never been this diverse and this good. If you think we’re exaggerating, we dare you to go and try it for yourself. From the drinks and light bites at Zsa Zsa, to poolside mocktails at Eclipse, Terrace Lounge, the lunch at Crust, the extensive in-room dining 54

menu, and the soon-to-be-opened Butcher & Still and Café Milano, you’re going to be spoilt for choice with quality cuisines. Perhaps one of the most noticeable things we picked up on during our stay is the great attention to detail and care that has gone into the design, planning and running of this hotel. Like the number of plug sockets in rooms, the Middle Eastern touch throughout the hotel, and the incredibly helpful staff for whom nothing is too much of an ask. Perfectly embodying the luxury that is associated with

the Four Seasons, this Abu Dhabi hotel has elegantly married a trusted brand ethos with local elements – like displaying over 2,000 pieces of culturally connected artwork from local and international artists – to pay homage to the capital’s Arabic culture with a warm welcome and generous hospitality. ✤ GO: Visit www.qatarairways.com to book your direct flight from Doha to ABU DHABI. L

and Rover are truly four-wheel-drive specialists. Since 1948, they’ve been wheeling out a variety of models from their workshop, including the world famous Range Rover. Almost 70 years later, the masterminds behind these top quality vehicles are still breaking the barriers with their everimproving and advanced offerings. Enter the Range Rover Sport. The forward-thinking approach to this design makes it difficult to know where to start when describing this SUV’s components. But here goes. When looking at the design, the enhanced boldness of the exterior is obvious. Power and class is what it exudes, shouting out its improved capabilities before the ignition is even engaged. The body is both modern and sleek in nature. Slightly longer than its predecessor, this 7-seater SUV is still shorter than its would-be competitors, allowing it to be manoeuvred with relative ease. The longer wheelbase ensures additional comfort for those riding in the back. Aerodynamics have been another major consideration of the creators, with many features receiving an upgrade to ensure an eight percent improvement in this area on the previous model. The profile has been rounded and streamlined, the angle of the

windscreen adjusted and the roofline carefully sloped. A trimming of 144mm on length, 55mm on height and 45kg on weight all contribute to the success of this undertaking. So what other features does this sporty SUV boast for motoring fans? The Range Rover Sport’s on-road capabilities have been hugely improved. This is obvious when experiencing its enhanced handling capabilities and general dexterity of the vehicle. Wheel-travel is in a class of it own (260mm front and 272mm rear), providing the excellent wheel articulation of 546mm which in turn, allows for maximum control in the most challenging of environments. The re-engineered air suspension system with its new +35mm intermediate setting means the off-road mode can remain available at much higher speeds (80km/h up from 50km/h) than previously possible. This is ideal for scarred dirt road conditions. A recent addition is the electric power steering, characterised by a lighter, more direct steering feel. fact magazine

A choice of two full-time 4WD systems are offered; one provides a two-speed transfer case with low-range option, for the most demanding off-road conditions with a front-rear 50/50 percent default torque split, and 100 percent locking capability. The alternative system is 18kg lighter and features a single-speed transfer case with a Torsen differential, which automatically distributes torque to the axle with most grip, working together with the traction control systems to deliver excellent traction in all conditions. The default front-rear torque split of 42/58 percent is designed to provide a rear-wheel drive bias for optimum driving dynamics. A supercharged 5.0-litre 510PS V8 petrol engine, a 3.0-litre 292PS SDV6 diesel engine a 3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 and a high performance 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8 diesel engine are on offer. In addition, an innovative, high-efficiency diesel Hybrid model. There are three equipment levels available, namely the HSE, HSE Dynamic and Autobiography Dynamic as well as a SE derivative on the TDV6 models. All of which offer great performance and luxurious comfort. Both the interior and exterior of the Range Rover Sport have clearly been a labour of love and the only way to fully appreciate the clear intellect and creativity behind this motoring feat is to get behind the wheel and to enjoy it first-hand, just like we did. ✤

New Mercedes-Benz CLA in Qatar

Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, the authorised general distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Qatar, has introduced to its valued clients, the totally new CLA, in Qatar. The car is available now in the company’s showroom at Salwa road. Sporty proportions and powerful, dynamic design idiom characterised by sensuously rounded contours make the CLA unmistakable. Its profile is sleek like a coupé, yet it offers room for five. From its diamond radiator grille with pins in chrome to its LED taillamps, there may be no car on the road offering such eyecatching style at such an awesome price. In undertaking the facelift modifications, the Mercedes-Benz designers have subtly honed the distinctive look and upgraded the interior. Khalid Sha’aban, General Manager, NBK Automobiles, said: “We are pleased to introduce the new CLA to our clients in Qatar. A car that is edgy and stands out from the mainstream. This is the car for the modern day customer that puts style first. We have no doubt this car will perform really well in this region. It was practically made for the Middle East.” The interior also benefits from features such as new seat covers and trim parts, as well as chrome-plated controls. The highlight here is a much slimmer-looking free standing 20.3 cm (8-inch) Media Display with a new-style glass cover. The new-style dials and red needles in the instrument cluster make it easier to read the display. Meticulous attention to detail is also evident from the silver chrome finish to the controls and to the fascia and switches in the doors for the electrically adjustable seats, as well as from the chrome surround to the 62

N

issan launched its new 2017 Patrol V6 which made its global debut in the Middle East last month, in complement to the current Patrol V8 lineup while offering the same levels of prestige to a broader customer base in the market. Samir Cherfan, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East, said: “The new Patrol V6 complements the legendary Patrol V8 which is considered one of the most powerful, spacious and popular SUVs in the Middle East. “Specifically designed and built for the demands of the region while taking into account increasing consumer appeal for more fuel efficient, practical, full-sized SUVs, the Patrol V6 still retains the high levels of power and prestige that the legendary Patrol is famous for and has earned it the title hero of all terrains in life,” he added. The new Patrol 4L V6 was designed for and tested in the region to meet all types of terrain and temperature conditions while delivering the same legendary off-road and on-road capability. It delivers best in class power in the V6 category. With 275 horsepower and 394 Nm, the Patrol V6 offers 12 per cent more torque in the driving range than

the competition while retaining the same towing capacity as the Patrol V8. The Patrol V6 weighs less and enjoys lower ownership costs, making it the ideal choice as a practical, everyday family vehicle while retaining its go-anywhere readiness for any kind of adventure. Available exclusively in the Middle East, the Patrol V6 is identical in design to the Patrol V8 and will be available in both XE and SE grades, each with many optional extras available. Both models have enhanced grade walks and will benefit of new standard specifications such as powered 3rd row seats, meaning they will continue to represent exceptional value for this class and above. Equipped with the Nissan Smart Car Application, the MY17 Patrol is the most connected car in its segment (available in the UAE and gradually expanding across the region). The Patrol V6 beats its rivals with several milestones including lower engine noise and vibration, better acceleration and a 25 per cent improvement on acceleration push on steep inclines. GO: The new Patrol V6 will be available in seven variations including the popular Platinum grade. Prices will range between USD47,500 and USD69,500 in the GCC, with local country prices being revealed by each Nissan distributor respectively. fact magazine

HIS There’s a less rugged, more contemporary biker profile, to step out in the city, blended with hints of military and sporty styles. Here, leather, studs, laser-cut denim, checked details and aggressive prints are combined with bomber jackets, camouflage, military greens and technical fabrics. And on the more active side, with parkas, reversible down coats, neoprene, acetate, maxi zips and thermo-taping. Expressed in hues which are powdery rather than full, with a vintage feel. On a more glamorous side, tailoring is reviewed towards a definition of new casual – smarter, urban, and more relaxed. Featuring low-crotch chinos, blazers and de-structured overcoats, clean-lined shirts with microprints, knitwear and cleancut tees, plus wool and woollen cloth, gabardine, jacquard and herringbone. Tones of black, grey and royal blue is also present. Graphics on tees range from skulls, swords and chains with biker appeal to witty quips, from microprint tattoos to gigantic animals, and even the nerdy universe of mathematical formulae, aliens and astronauts. HER It’s all about volumes, fabric mixes and luxury processes, marking out the oscillations between glam sport and urban biker, boho and sartorial androgyny, smart athleisure and galaxy projections. According to the tenets of sport luxury, active-wear shapes and designs are matched with glamorous materials and processes. Thus sweatshirts, t-shirts and maxi dresses are combined with lace, matelassé faux leather patches, sequins, maxi zips, fringes, lurex and passementerie. Fabrics are lightweight and semi-transparent, while faux leather is seen in jogging and basketball trousers. The heritage biker is synonymous with leather, laser-cut denim and aggressive tees. A more bohemian spirit is seen in faux-sheepskin outerwear, woollen ponchos, long fringes and jacquard alpaca knitwear. Meanwhile the appeal of androgynous tailoring shows in low-crotch chinos, overcoats, dresses and shirts in light fabrics, while not forgetting the heritage check proposed in overcoats, maxi skirts, dresses and blouses: from crêpe to wool. T-shirts play on pleating and processing: leather effects, lamination, sequins and precious iridescent caviar beads. Vintage rock prints, slogans, galaxy motifs, mathematical formulae, micro polka dots and arrows. It unclogs pores and lifts ingrown hairs, making it perfect for pre-shave prep, too. Another bonus, it won’t strip your skin, making it an everyday skincare essential.

Kiehl’s Post Shave Repair Gel Shaving puts your skin through the wringer, so post-shave care is essential. The key ingredient in this gel, Squalane, rebuilds and fortifies upper skin layers to get it back to its best, and the fact that it’s 90 per cent aloe will make treating those razor burns and nicks that much more soothing.

It controls excess sebum production and contains herbs such as turmeric and ginseng that will make your hair look and feel thicker. fact magazine

n Doha, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to weekend brunches. There are many great locations offering a variety of spreads. What is unique about the Intercontinental Doha’s Paloma, is its authentic Tex-Mex flavours and excellent live entertainment. A very relaxed environment is what initially welcomed us into the venue. That, coupled with the friendly faces of the attentive staff, made for the type of reception that encourages repeat visits. By the time we had tucked our chairs under the table, we were already offered an assortment of refreshing beverages. A glance over at the cuisine layout showed the promise of the feast to come. A great feature of Paloma’s Friday festivities is the inclusion of a live resident band. This ensemble go by the name of Soul Shake. They’re a fourpiece band formerly based in the UK and they’ve performed in many countries around the world, now gracing the shores of Qatar. Their sound is a fusion 84

of hard rock, pop, funk and dance. Be prepared to hear some classics and current favourites across various genres. Soon enough our stomachs were instructing us to make our way to the food area and as self-proclaimed foodies, we always listen to these demands. What awaited us was a full range of Mexican favourites, including just about every form of finger food that the Americas is famous for. We started off with the tortillas. Although there were a few variations, we

indulged in the spicy mince and cheese option and it tasted just how we wanted it to. A couple of burritos were to follow, also boasting a rich cheesy flavour and spiced to perfection. Please keep in mind the buffet consists of mini portions, so we were able to sample quite a few of the choices (even if that meant ten of everything!). Chicken fajitas were the next to go down and they did with extreme ease. Our personal favourite was the mini burgers or sliders. We decided that four of these sliders equated to one full burger, which was our excuse to fill our plates with them! And you probably will too – they’re just THAT yummy. By this stage there was very little space left in our tummies. Although there were still a good few items left unsampled, we could only manage to chew down a pair of barbequed chicken drumsticks - delish! It was at this stage we had to admit defeat and bow out of the eating part of the brunch, gracefully. What makes Paloma such a great location to brunch is not only the ample and tasty selection of Tex-Mex food items, but the great atmosphere. We found the mood to be very upbeat and guests seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. By the time we left the festivities, we were full, happy and ready for the rest of the weekend. If you’re a fan of Mexican food, good music, and great weekend vibes, Paloma will tick all these boxes, and then some. ✤ GO: Visit Paloma’s Friday Brunch at InterContinental Doha. High Steaks Prime Restaurant at the Intercontinental Doha The City is well known for its superior steak and other quality dishes. We sent our resident amateur chef to check out some of the secrets behind the success, here’s his October Cucina De Badir experience‌ fact magazine

Cucina de badir

A

rriving at the beautifully laid out Prime Restaurant in Intercontinental Doha the City, I knew I was in for a treat. Having put Cucina De Badir on hold for a few weeks due to an injury to my cooking arm, I was very happy to be kicking things off again in such a prime location (pun intended). FACT was fortunate enough to secure an afternoon with Executive Chef, Emmanuel Pauliat. A genuine French Chef, with many years of experience, 13 of which have been for the Intercontinental Hotel Group. I was definitely in good hands. I am never too sure what to expect when meeting the chefs for Cucina, however, who greeted us was a friendly man, passionate about his craft and more than happy to reveal to us, his creative process. The dishes selected for the day were the Beef Tartar and the famous Prime Rib Eye Steak. My mouth was watering already, knowing I get to eat what we create – cue all the tummy rumbles! First things first. The oil for brushing the meat needed to be prepared in order to help the steak cook. It requires a good four hours or so to be ready, so despite Chef having made some for us beforehand, we worked on a new batch to appreciate the process. Simple to prepare in the right hands, olive oil is the base. We added around 500ml of oil to a large heated pan. Whilst this was heating up, two bay leaves were dropped in. A batch of thyme and a dab of rosemary were next. Chef then expertly crushed black pepper and unpeeled garlic with the side of a knife, leaving the ingredients nice and chunky. Everything was stirred together and smelt great. Chef explained this needed to be infused at 80C for four hours. Knowing there was still plenty to be done, we cracked on with the Beef Tartar. A portion of beef tenderloin 88

was to be finely sliced up, a skill I proved was not as easy as Chef made it look. Several ingredients were to be included into a mixing bowl to create the required taste. Firstly, all the liquid ingredients. Tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, tabasco and Dijon mustard, were all added and mixed thoroughly. The diced beef cubes, chives, gherkins, capers and shallots were next to join. Salt and Pepper were added accordingly and then after another good stir, the Tartar was plated. Chef then added the micro greens for both final layer of taste and presentation. I am not the biggest tartar fan, but let me tell you, after sampling this version, I am now officially a convert. Delicious! Whilst Chef Emmanuel’s assistants took care of the tarragon reduction (a preparation of ingredients to be added to the sauce), as well as the incredible béarnaise sauce itself, we watched as a picture perfect 300g rib eye was cut and prepped for cooking. First, the soft meat was thoroughly basted with the before

mentioned herb oil. Smoked molten salt and crushed mixed pepper were then added to all surfaces. Chef expertly grilled the steak on both sides for two minutes, leaving tasty looking grill marks. From there, two minutes each side in the oven. A perfect medium rare was the result, which was left to air for a few minutes at room temperature. A last coating of the herb oil finished off the process and we all made our way to a table in the restaurant. The rib eye was simply one of the tastiest and best cooked steaks I have ever had the pleasure of sending past my taste buds. The combination of its succulent preparation and the béarnaise sauce was, simply, perfect. A wonderful day, creating even better cuisine, with an equally great chef. Oh, I do love my job. Hasta la próxima en la Cucina De Badir… ✤

Facial Perfection It’s no lie that a good facial does wonders but how about a massage that can feel like an instant face lift by activating collagen? We went to the Doha Marriott’s spa for a lovely shellac manicure and the famous face therapy that will leave you looking and feeling like a million bucks…

e all want a younger look with a smooth face and plumped facial expressions, right? And we’d all rather get this through a non-invasive, relaxed treatment, correct? FACT may have just found THE facial that triggers all these wonders for a healthier look. Behold a reconstructive and recontouring face massage that activates collagen and helps you unwind all at the same time. The LPG Liftmassage is a 100 per cent natural technique that deeply rejuvenates the skin on your face. Hoping to walk out with a more youthful look, we made our way to the Doha Marriott hotel’s spa to see if the treatment was as good as it sounds. The spa is set within a cool and comfortable setting (perfect to beat the scorching heat), which makes it easy to loosen up for the therapy ahead. We started off with the LPG facial massage, and the kind and knowledgeable 96

Using the LPG machine, designed with advanced technology, the therapist began with a smooth speed lift. If you’re wondering what that is and if this technique hurts, let us reassure you, it’s absolutely painfree; it’s a smooth and relaxing journey. Needless to say, there was a welcomed shine and suppleness restored to the face – win! We later proceeded with the application of a face mask, which was adapted to our skin type and needs. This was done to restore a natural glow and bring forward a youthful complexion – something that remains a staple duty of any good facial treatment. Needless to say, there was a welcomed shine and suppleness restored to the face – win! We added 60 minutes of pure heaven to our spa journey with the Shellac

manicure – a treatment that we’ll definitely come back for again! The glossy manicure was a welcomed respite from everyday typing (we do a lot of that) and general tiredness for the hands. The shellac lasted around two weeks without chipping – yes, you heard right!
