Changing Seasons

“The autumn wind is a pirate. Blustering in from the sea with a rollicking song, he sweeps along, swaggering boisterously. His face is weather-beaten, he wears a hooded sash with a silver hat about his head… The autumn wind is a raider, pillaging just for fun.”- Steve Sabol

I

love this quote and I absolutely adore this time of year here in the Middle East. The blistering sun has toned down to a deliciously balmy warmth and, if we’re lucky, we get to witness a few spectacular autumnal storms. The cooler weather means it’s the perfect time to get outside and, as we do every year at this time, we’ve taken a look at what’s on offer around the country to make

the most of our mini winter. Don’t worry, I promise we’re not repeating ourselves since Qatar is ever changing and there are always new options to try – I’m particularly excited at the prospect of a balloon trip. How will you be experiencing the great outdoors? Team FACT got to try some exceptional eateries this month with Greek, Lebanese and fusion cuisine on the menu. Check out our dining pages to find out what we thought and don’t forget to browse the Dining Deals section as there’s loads happening around town, from new offers to Thanksgiving dinners and Diwali feasts. Two of my colleagues got to head off on staycation and had a great time being pampered at the Park Hyatt Doha and Marriott Marquis City Center Doha – between spa treatments and yummy food, I was more than a little jealous – though I can’t complain, since I was gallivanting in Europe myself, I’ll tell you more about that next month. We headed to Saadiyat Island Abu Dhabi for this month’s Travel section and, I must say, it does look rather fab… perhaps one for the next trip. As usual, we’ve got our regular roundups of news across the fashion, entertainment, tech and motoring sectors as well as nibbles of what’s going on around Doha. Read all about it while you’re enjoying the cooler weather.

A LOOK AT AI IN EDUCATION WISE (World Innovation Summit for Education) the dynamic platform that promotes innovation in education returns for its 11th edition this month.

A

n initiative of Qatar Foundation (QF), WISE is an international, multi-sectoral platform for creative thinking, debate and purposeful action in education. Through both its biennial summit and a range of ongoing programmes, it promotes new thinking and joint action to build the future of education. Founded by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of QF, previous speakers have included former US First Lady, Michelle Obama; singer and activist Shakira, who created the educational initiative Fundación Pies Descalzos, in Colombia; and columnist and CNN host Fareed Zakaria. This year, recognising the transformative power of AI (artificial intelligence) and how it is becoming an integral part of our daily lives, the WISE Summit 2023 will bring together educators from diverse backgrounds, including tech innovators, AI ethicists, policymakers and students, to create dialogues on how AI will shape the future of education. Themed Creative Fluency: Human Flourishing in the Age of AI, the event will take place on November 28 and 29. And, in addition to exploring how education can pave the way for a future where humans can thrive alongside AI, discussions will also revolve around AI being integrated into learning environments in a way that enhances learning experiences, fosters creativity and prepares the next generation for a future where both educators and learners can use AI tools and systems. WISE 11 will feature live podcasts, immersive AI experiences, interactive masterclasses and panel discussions that address a 8

range of topics holding significant implications for the future of education, including AI strategies that bridge educational gaps, creating inclusive learning environments tailored to diverse needs, and AI's role in progressing from traditional classroom learning to AI-influenced teaching. The event will also raise awareness on how educators can ensure AI in education addresses ethical and socio-economic concerns and how it aligns with local values while integrating global AI advancements, as well as ensuring learners are equipped with skills for evolving roles in an ever-changing and dynamic job landscape. Attendees can expect 150-plus speakers, more than 20 core sessions and hands-on learning across a fully bilingual programme with simultaneous translations in Arabic and English. WISE CEO, Stavros N Yiannouka, said: “At a time when AI is at the forefront of the global conversation, it is imperative that we consider its role in the future of education. WISE 11 provides a platform for policymakers, educators and innovators to collaboratively envision how AI can enhance the learning experience and empower individuals. WISE 11 aspires to provide inspiration and thought leadership, providing a roadmap for a future where teachers and learners can leverage AI to create transformative learning experiences.” ✤

END OF AN ERA Qatar Airways’ iconic boss, His Excellency Mr Akbar Al Baker, is stepping down after 27 years at the helm of the national carrier. Having taken over the top job in 1997, in just 20 years Mr Al Baker is credited with turning Qatar Airways from a small regional carrier into a multi-award-winning global brand voted the World’s Best Airline a record-breaking seven times. Today, Qatar Airways flies one of the youngest, most sustainable and state-of-the-art fleets in the skies serving over 130 destinations across six continents. In July this year, Qatar Airways Group, which also manages the equally acclaimed Hamad International Airport, a pet project of Mr Al Baker, reported a USD1.2 billion profit with revenue of USD20.9 billion. His Excellency’s resignation, for which no explanation has been given, is effective November 5, and he will be succeeded by Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer as Group Chief Executive for Qatar Airways. Mr Al-Meer is currently Chief Operating Officer of Hamad International Airport and is said to have been instrumental in the facility’s growth, expansion and success since he took over in 2014. Qatar Airways is one of the most recognisable and trusted brands globally, synonymous with customer service quality and the highest of standards and much lauded for its part in delivering the successful FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Though one of the most outspoken and sometimes 12

fact magazine

controversial figures in the airline industry, Mr Al Baker is also widely known for his ambition and passion for innovation. In March 2017 he introduced the award-winning Qsuite featuring the first ever double bed available in business class. In August the same year, he was announced as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the prestigious global aviation industry body, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which came into effect in June 2018 for a period of one year. And, in November 2017, he was proudly named ‘Aviation Executive of the Year’ by the CAPA Centre for Aviation in recognition of his global influence and visionary approach to the airline industry. Whether there will be changes at the national carrier following his departure remains to be seen but there can be no doubt that Qatar Airways and the airline industry as a whole is bidding farewell to a man who has been a force to be reckoned with. ✤

CITY LIVING Step Out Among life’s simplest pleasures, stepping outside for a walk when the weather is pleasant undoubtedly ranks high on the list. The various knock-on health benefits related to walking aside, just stepping away from our desks and not staring at screens for an uninterrupted period, whether that be a quick 30 minutes to an hour or more, boosts your overall mood. It’s a quick and easy daily fix we could all use! Luckily for us in Doha, there are several good walking routes dotted around the city, such as: Aspire Park, Al Bidda Park, Al Khor Corniche, Dafna Park, Katara Hills, Oxygen Park and Hotel Park. Additionally, for those with pets it’s the best opportunity to take your furry friends outside and get them some much-needed exercise and it also opens opportunities to meet and socialise with other pet owners. GO: Do check the park or location’s own information regarding timings, rules, etc, before visiting.

Best Foot Forward For those looking to up the intensity, there’s no better way to kick off your day than to head outside for a run. So, lace up your trainers, grab a bottle of water and don’t forget to put on some sunscreen (yes, you will need it even on the seemingly coolest of days). The endorphins alone will make the early start worth it as you then settle into your regular schedule for the day energised and ready to tackle whatever comes your way. Again, the various locations mentioned before double up as great options to head on out to for a run, but other good choices include Crescent Park, Doha Corniche and Al Gharrafa Park (which offers temperaturecontrolled tunnels). GO: For those who prefer to run along with company, joining a running club is the perfect solution. Check out @qtrrun, @qtrrun.ladies, @vrc.qa on Instagram, and @ dohabayrunningclub or Doha-She Runs This Town on Facebook for more information.

Wheels of Steel Shifting gears! Qatar over the years has undergone a steady transformation and has become much more cycling-friendly, you can now find many dedicated bicycle routes emerging across the city thanks to the focused efforts by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal). Some of the best routes include the Olympic Cycling Track, Doha Festival City Cycling Track, C-Ring Road to Hamad International Airport route, and the Lusail International Circuit that opens its doors to cyclists, walkers, and runners on Tuesdays (women and children only) and Wednesdays. GO: For those interested in joining a cycling club visit the Facebook pages of Qatar Cycling Club, Qatar Cycling Community, and the Doha ChiQlistas (women only) for more information.

W

e don’t hide the fact thatwe are huge fans of all things Porsche. After all, what’s not to love? This month, thanks to the team at Porsche Centre Doha, FACT had the opportunity to thoroughly inspect and test drive the fundamentally overhauled third-generation Cayenne S Coupé . Here’s what we discovered…

Refined Exterior Porsche’s quest to establish the new Cayenne range as the sportiest series in the mid-sized luxury SUV segment began with an updated exterior design. The moment we laid eyes on the coupé we were taken by the overall expressive appearance of this latest model. We took our time appreciating the contemporary design that is emphasised by a freshly configured front end. We found the sleek yet robust nature of the anterior to be complemented by the strongly arched wings, a dashing new bonnet and the bold black grille. Highlighting the SUV’s considerable width are the technically appealing Matrix LED headlights, equipped as standard on the refurbished models. Shifting our focus to the flanks, the athletic stance of the coupé became even more obvious, with its strong body lines and a sloping roofline that culminates in a neat roof spoiler. We found 36

the chunky 22-inch GT Design wheels, painted in black, to further underscore the car’s sporty prowess, making us itch to get out onto the tarmac. To us, the most notable characteristics of the back end were the three-dimensionally designed taillights, the uncluttered surfaces beneath and the new rear apron housing an integrated number plate holder. The final flourish was the sports exhaust system, complete with twin dual sports tailpipes in silver, that provide an exclamation point to an already outstanding exterior.

Functional Interior Slipping inside the Cayenne we were welcomed by adaptive sports seats that we agreed were some of the most supportive, well-positioned and comfortable we have experienced in an SUV. These electric, 18-way adjustable seats provide a commanding position from which to view the road ahead and the perfect place from which we could appreciate the finer details of the driverorientated cockpit. Instantly apparent to us was the completely revised display and control concept that ensures all operations are fully optimised. All frequently used functions are located directly on or immediately next to the steering wheel. A prime example of this is the lever positioned on the left, behind the steering wheel, that now features additional functions for operating the driver assistance

• CITY RIDES systems. Another example is the automatic transmission selector lever, now positioned on the dashboard, leaving more room in the centre console for storage compartments and a big air conditioning controller. Additionally, we found the large, easily accessible controls, combined with mechanical air conditioning switches and a haptic volume controller, to further enhance operability as well as to provide a refined look. We unanimously agreed that Porsche has achieved the perfect balance between digital and analogue elements.

Upgraded Infotainment & Tech Shifting our focus to the updated infotainment system, we were greatly impressed by each one of its components, starting with the fully digital 12.6-inch instrument cluster. This modern display sports a curved and free-standing design, along with variable display options. Secondly, we loved how the standard 12.3-inch central Porsche Communication Management (PCM) display is harmoniously integrated into the new dashboard and how easy it was for us to access all the relevant vehicle functions. Our test drive model also contained the optional head-up display, along with the optional 10.9-inch passenger display that provides performance data and separate access to the infotainment controls. A special foil has been fitted to ensure the driver is not distracted by the screen.

Proficient Power & Performance As previously mentioned, Porsche set out to create the sportiest offering in the mid-sized luxury SUV segment with their revamped third-generation Cayenne series. They accomplished this, in large part, by replacing the previous V6 engine with a refined four-litre V8 biturbo. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, this monstrous power source generates a maximum output of 349kW and 600Nm of torque. This enables the new coupé to surge from 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds and to reach a top speed of 273km/h. As we effortlessly negotiated the roads around Qatar, we identified and appreciated many of the car's finest performance characteristics, the first of which was the suspension. Now equipped with the steel sprung suspension that includes Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), along with new shock absorbers containing two-valve technology, we could feel how this translated to the smoothest of rides on all surface types and in all driving modes. It also provided us with complete control during our dynamic cornering tests. The pitch and roll support has also been noticeably improved.

Our Verdict Porsche have accomplished their goal of creating a seriously sporty SUV offering, one that is not only fully-loaded but very easy on the eye. ✤

A SUCCESSFUL DEBUT At its inaugural event, Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) Qatar recorded remarkable attendance of 180,000 visitors over 10 days.

Taking place outside of Switzerland for the first time since its inception in 1905, Qatar Tourism launched the first edition of the long-awaited event, drawing in more than 1,000 journalists from over 50 countries and 180,000 visitors. Set at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), the celebrated motor show ran from October 5 to 14 and welcomed 30 exhibitors who collectively unveiled 29 regional launches and 12 world premieres. The doors finally closed at 10pm on October 14 to the sound of horns honking, a prized Geneva International Motor Show tradition. Speaking on the resounding success of the exhibition, His Excellency Saad bin Ali Al Kharji, Chairman at Qatar Tourism, said: “We are delighted to have led efforts to bring to Qatar one of the most elite exhibitions in the automotive industry and demonstrate Qatar’s ability to host large-scale events. The celebration of automotive excellence that took place across multiple venues demonstrates the country’s seamless alignment and adherence to one shared vision of propelling Qatar onto the international stage.” Sandro Mesquita, GIMS CEO, said: “Our Geneva Salon has for many years allowed the great and good of the automotive industry to connect, share ideas and inspire the future of the sector. Wherever and whenever a GIMS event takes place, it brings the same excellence. This first edition of GIMS Qatar is a true testament to that.” Spread over 10,000sq/m at the DECC, the Geneva International Motor Show Qatar offered a unique platform for automotive experts to present cutting-edge technologies, designs and concepts. Beyond the exhibition halls, the motor show extended to a country-wide festival of automotive excellence with a Future Design Forum held at the National Museum of Qatar, the Track Days at the newly renovated Lusail International Circuit, offroading experiences at the Sealine Adventure Hub and a Parade of Excellence at the Urban Playground created in the familyfriendly Lusail Boulevard. The organisers and founding partners of GIMS Qatar expressed their profound satisfaction with the results and the overwhelming attendance. Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation (QF), Sheikha Hanadi Al-Thani, Chairperson of Q-Auto, Matthias Ziegler, Managing Director of Volkswagen Middle East, and other dignitaries were present at the launch of the partnership. BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED AND HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL Tech giants HUAWEI have released their new flagship smartwatch – the WATCH GT 4.

O

n detailed inspection of this new creation, FACT found it to be HUAWEI’s best-looking and most health-conscious smartwatch offering to date.

Look & Feel The HUAWEI GT 4 has deviated from the design language that defined previous generations by introducing inventive new elements. Coming in two sizes, the 41mm and the 46mm, these new devices look and feel like classic premium watches, unlike the many easily recognisable smartwatches available on the market. We appreciated the octagonal design of the 46mm option’s stainless-steel bezel that includes 24-hour indicators. This model boasts a 1.43-inch AMOLED colour screen with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and a density of 326PPI. The 41mm version adopts a pendant-like design that exudes an air of grace and sophistication. It features a 1.32-inch AMOLED colour screen with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and a density of 352PPI. The GT 4 comes with a range of options, colours and finishes, enabling the owner to personalise the watch’s appearance. The face itself has plenty of customisations, many of which we effortlessly downloaded via the HUAWEI app. Our model also featured a high-quality green composite rubber and cloth strap that was easily removable, making it simple to swap out for other options. Although solid in design, the 10.9mm thick device is light and comfortable while retaining the feel of a genuine, quality watch. We wore it for hours without really noticing it was there. Functionality & Connectivity We discovered the functionality of the smartwatch to be both fast and smooth. Besides the now-standard Bluetooth calls and reminders such as emails and social media messages, it supports 46

fact magazine

effortless compatibility and connectivity with both Android and iOS-powered devices. Health & Workouts HUAWEI’s classy new generation offering debuts the all-new Stay Fit app and upgraded GNSS tracking, all made better with the new TruSeen 5.5+ that brings AI-powered accuracy to health measurement. All this empowers and motivates the owner to achieve a better, fitter self. By utilising the smartwatch's LED sensors, PPG measures changes in blood volume and alerts users of irregular heartbeats using Pulse Wave Arrhythmia Analysis. The gadget also supports more than 100 sports modes and workout types and even monitors calorie consumption. Battery Life One of our top-rated features was the exceptional battery life. The battery can last up to 14 days on the 46mm and up to seven on the 41mm with essential use only. This length of time decreases to around two to four days with excessive usage. A wireless charging cradle is included in the package, allowing you to charge on the go. Our Verdict HUAWEI has outdone itself with the new WATCH GT 4. We strongly recommend anyone in the market looking for a highly functional, beautifully designed smartwatch, with a classic watch look and feel, to take a closer look. ✤ GO: VISIT HTTPS://CONSUMER.HUAWEI.COM/QA/ FOR MORE INFORMATION.

ULTRA SOUND Bose has unveiled the new QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds. Though over-ear headphones are great, their size can often become an inconvenience for many. Enter the new QuietComfort (QC) Ultra Earbuds, which replace the previous award-winning QC Earbuds II and offer breakthrough spatialised audio for more immersive listening. A standout feature of the new model is Bose’s Immersive Audio mode that’s been added alongside the standard ‘quiet’ (active noise cancellation) and ‘aware’ (transparency) modes. It goes beyond special effects and creates a wider, more spacious soundstage so the listening content becomes multi-dimensional and layered, regardless of the audio platform or device. With the support of dynamic microphone mixing and adaptive filters, the Ultra’s voice pickup is more intelligible in less-than-ideal environments. That’s achieved by technologies that work together in real time to determine and prioritise which microphone on each bud is experiencing the least wind noise and selecting from a variety of filters so the user's voice sounds clearer during calls. The Single-Bud Use feature lets users take calls and listen to music using just one bud. It will seamlessly switch between earbuds if

one of them runs out of battery or disconnects from Bluetooth. The design has also been refreshed to incorporate a cool new metallic treatment for a sleeker, more luxe look in two colours – black and White Smoke. The stability bands now feature an improved, interlocking fit on the buds to ensure they are mounted correctly, delivering optimal comfort and performance. Doing the most where it counts, the Ultra offers up to six hours of battery life on a single charge when Bose Immersive Audio is turned off, and up to four hours when turned on. A new optional wireless charging case cover is also available. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.BOSE.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

The Regional GM of Maserati Qatar and Oman Markets and GM Alfa Romeo, Abarth & Fiat Qatar at Alfardan Sports Motors talks electric vehicles, racing updates and a dream drive.

How do you envision the future of the sports and luxury motoring market in Qatar given the growing presence of electric and hybrid vehicles in the country? The local market is certainly evolving toward electric and hybrid vehicles. Meanwhile, Maserati is well-prepared for this shift and is adapting accordingly. That is why Maserati has launched the all-electric Folgore trims globally to embrace the future of electrification. We expect to bring these zero-emission models to Qatar in 2024. This aligns with our commitment to innovation and sustainability while catering to the needs and preferences of the Qatari market. 54

fact magazine

Maserati has long been known for its racing heritage. Are there any recent updates on racing cars from the brand? Maserati continues to uphold its racing heritage with the launch of exciting models like the Maserati GT2, MCXtrema and other racing cars. These vehicles showcase our dedication to performance and competition. They are a testament to Maserati’s commitment to high-performance racing excellence. The GT2 is a new single-seater racer car that has been developed to comply with GT2 regulations and is largely based on the MC20. Like its road-going sibling, the GT2 uses Maserati’s 3.0-litre, twin-turbo Nettuno V6 engine, delivering 621hp and 730Nm of torque.

5 OVER 5 •

Similarly, the MCXtrema is based on the street-legal MC20 supercar. Limited to 62 units, this is the most powerful track car that the Modena-based brand has ever made. Currently, Maserati is very active in Formula E. How do you think this relates to its road cars? It was a historic moment in 2022 when Maserati entered the Formula E Championship. It was not only a first for the Trident brand, but also for Formula E itself, with the first Italian manufacturer entering the championship. Formula E provides a platform for us to test and develop cutting-edge electric technologies, which directly contribute to the development of our road cars, ensuring that they offer the best in terms of performance and efficiency. By entering the electric world championship, Maserati will definitely accelerate its progress toward electrification because it targets having a fully electrified version of its entire range by 2025. Are there any new Maserati models or upcoming developments on the horizon for our readers to be aware of? We have an exciting announcement to share with our enthusiasts and loyal fans. The eagerly anticipated all-new Maserati

GranTurismo will be launched in Qatar in December. It brings back the GranTurismo’s nameplate, that has been on hiatus since 2019. The good news is that it will be powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 Nettuno engine that debuted in the MC20. The all-new Maserati GranTurismo encapsulates the very essence of Italian luxury and style. It isn't just a vehicle; it's a statement of sophistication, reflecting the legacy of a brand that has always prioritised aesthetics as much as performance. As it graces the roads of Qatar this December, the GranTurismo is set to remind the world that Maserati isn't just about speed and power, but also about an unparalleled blend of opulence and artistry. The heart might be in the roar of the engine, but the soul? It's in the sublime elegance that this car exudes. If you could choose any Maserati model and location for your dream drive, what would be your ultimate combination? Personally, I would choose the Maserati MC20 for a thrilling spin on the Lusail International Circuit. For a more scenic adventure, I would opt for the Maserati Grecale Trofeo on the roads of Medina Central at The Pearl-Qatar. I prefer the latter location because it perfectly blends urban sophistication with stunning coastal views. ✤ fact magazine

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

KNIVES OUT Executive Sous Chef Robert Chlopinski, of The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa, on a shock early memory and consoling the World Cup favourites.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

What is your earliest food/kitchen memory? It was in my apprenticeship in my home town. My former head chef told me that they got a call from a hunter who had a whole deer for us. My chef told me he had a surprise for me, so I could learn how to butcher the parts of a deer. When it was in front of me, I was a bit shocked and then, after a short time, I took my knives and started to cut the meat. At one point, I took a saw from our engineering team to cut some bones as the carcass was too big! During your career you have participated in live radio and TV events. How do you think such exposure helps people understand the secrets of the culinary world? A German TV channel approached our hotel in Dubai to ask if they could film me as they wanted to show how German chefs introduce our cuisine to different countries. They followed me for three days to show the daily routine in the kitchen as well as spoke to some of our guests to learn what they thought about German cuisine. This kind of exposure is useful for teaching people about different styles of food and cooking.

You catered for the Brazil national team during the Qatar World Cup 2022, please tell us about that experience – are there any special incidents you can share with our readers? It’s always fantastic to be a part of such big events as the World Cup 2022 and that we had such a big team as the Brazilians made it even more memorable for us. There is not really an incident during their stay that stands out but I remember well their last game against Croatia. [Brazil were defeated and knocked out of the tournament.] The team came back to our hotel with their families and children and it was full of emotions in the restaurant as they had lost this game. It was such an unforgettable moment. What is your signature dish? I don’t really have a signature dish. I like to serve a board with charcuterie to my friends and family as this can be eaten as a snack or dinner. It makes the dinner less formal and, for me, it’s more a gathering point where everyone can meet to catch up or relax together. ✤ fact magazine

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

A GRECIAN SOIRÉE FOR THE SENSES AMS was transported to the Greek islands on a trip to Mykonos.

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

N

estled in the corner of the InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa pool area, overlooking the sea, Mykonos instantly enveloped us in a romantic atmosphere. It was a visual feast, with Aegean blues and whites capturing the essence of the Greek isles. The murmur of contented diners, lilting traditional music and the overall hum of activity immediately set an inviting audio backdrop that transported us into the rich cultural tapestry of Greece. Upon our arrival, we were personally welcomed by Chef Alexandros Chrysafoudis (aka Chef Alex) and the restaurant manager, Rupesh. Their warmth and affability filled the space as generously as the aroma of oregano and olive oil that wafted in the air. Tables were laid with crisp white linen, exuding a sense of elegance that perfectly balanced casual with chic. Rattan hanging light fixtures and hemp blinds adorned the interior, lending an airy, beachside feel that beckoned us to relax. The evening started with a delightful fisherman’s soup that had been prepared – off menu – by Chef Alex, especially for a table of Greek guests. Hailing from a proud fishing background himself, he encouraged us to partake of this classic appetiser. The broth was a blend of flavours that spoke of years spent navigating the subtleties of seafood. It was deeply flavourful, with hints of fennel, coriander and lemon zest, and the hamour within was impeccably tender. Our culinary adventure continued with a trio of classic dips. The Tzatziki was velvety, each spoonful offering the creamy embrace of Greek yoghurt, fresh cucumber and aromatic garlic. The fact magazine

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT Melitzanosalata was a smoky, earthy roasted eggplant dip, its texture a delightful mix of smooth and chunky. The Lefki Taramosalata consisted of a smooth fish roe paste that added a briny kiss to the ensemble, marrying well with the warm, fluffy pita bread. The staff added a further layer of enjoyment to the evening – connoisseurs in their own right; their intimate knowledge of each dish elevated our dining experience. Every query was met with a detailed yet understandable explanation. Seafood took centre stage in our next course. The Kalamarakia, or calamari, was audibly crisp to the bite, and its inner flesh – marinated for 24 hours – was so tender it practically melted on the tongue. The Htapodi Me Fava, a grilled octopus dish, was satisfyingly meaty, with a smoky sweetness, further accentuated by a hint of char you could both smell and taste. On the side, there was a splendid purée made with fava beans all the way from Santorini, a detail that highlighted the restaurant’s commitment to sourcing authentic ingredients. When the clock struck 9pm, the al fresco area suddenly transformed into a scene of jubilant chaos (Thursdays and Fridays only). The ritual breaking of plates began and each shatter was accompanied by joyous cries of "Opa!" It was more than a mere spectacle; it was a tradition, a shared moment in the middle of our meal. The sight and sound of breaking porcelain, the staff's enthusiastic participation, and the guests' laughter created an atmosphere that was electric and authentically Greek. At this stage, we decided to move outside and soak up more of the convivial atmosphere. As we reclined at our table, we were entertained by the Bouzouki Duo who treat guests to renditions of Greek classics from Monday to Saturday. The welcome pause gave us time to prepare for the Lavraki Plaki Stin Varka, a stuffed grilled sea bass dish, which was nothing short of spectacular. The oven-baked fish had been sliced open to reveal two welcoming fillets—one for each guest – while the internal medley of tomato and vegetables added vivid colours and a symphony of textures, including soft zucchini and bell peppers alongside red onions that retained a slight crunch. Feeling it was remiss to attend a Greek restaurant without eating lamb, we felt compelled to sample the Paidakia Sta Karvouna. And we were not disappointed. Each lamb chop was a microcosm of flavours – herbaceous, salty and perfectly pink in the middle. The tactile contrast between the charred exterior and the succulent interior was delightful, and the smell – oh, that heavenly aroma – reminded us of family barbecues, but elevated. The roast potato wedges were golden gifts of crunch and fluffiness, seasoned to perfection, mingling with the intense jus that adorned the plate. To cap off the night, the Armenovil Giaourti was a harmonious blend of unctuous Greek yoghurt, tart lemon crémeux and crunchy almond brittle. The meringue pieces were as light as air and the fruit coulis painted the plate with hues of summer. The perfume of citrus completed the sensory tapestry. Dining at Mykonos was a feast for all five senses, each dish a scene in a production that told a compelling story from beginning to end. And just like every good tale, it left us yearning for the next chapter. From Chef Alex's maritime magic to the staff's encyclopaedic knowledge and the plate-breaking 60

he Social at voco Doha West Bay Suites offers a blend of international cuisines, expertly prepared by a talented team. Located on the ground floor of the hotel, it’s perfectly positioned for easy access, allowing visitors to take advantage of the complimentary valet parking. Upon entering the restaurant, we were immediately greeted by Nancy, our waitress for the evening. Her warm smile and personal greeting of, ‘You look amazing!’ instantly made us feel at home. It's these small touches that truly enhance a dining experience. The restaurant has a modern yet cosy feel with teal walls and stylish arches. Abstract art adds a fresh touch to the space. The marble floors give it a clean look, while comfy seats and wooden details make it feel welcoming. The soft lighting sets a relaxed mood, perfect for a meal out. As we settled into our seats, we were introduced to Chef Ayman and learned about his impressive resume in the Gulf. This was certainly evident in the authenticity and richness of the dishes he presented. A veteran of the Doha culinary scene, Chef Ayman has been gracing the city with his culinary talents since 2005. His genuine passion for his native Lebanese cuisine was a treat to experience. The first course of fried halloumi arrived as a stack of golden, crispy squares nestled on a bed of fresh greens. Each bite of the tender interior and crunchy exterior revealed the salty, subtly briny flavours of this iconic cheese. The contrast of textures made this simple appetiser shine. This was

• DINING DELIGHT perfectly paired with a lively Fattoush salad. The interplay of cool crisp vegetables, fragrant fresh herbs and warm toasted bread created a salad brimming with Middle Eastern flair. With each bite, the bright acidic dressing perfectly cut through the rich flavours. While we waited for our next course, we further explored the interior. The restaurant offered two distinct dining experiences. Within the main area, there's a serene ambience perfect for intimate dinners or family gatherings. For those seeking a more relaxed setting, the outer area provides a covered space, with large windows to the outside, where guests can enjoy hookah. This added versatility caters to different preferences, ensuring that every visitor finds their ideal spot to dine and unwind. Soon, we were tucking into our main courses, beginning with juicy Shish Tawook skewers marinated in thyme, garlic and spices before being grilled over an open flame. The smoky char-grilled chicken was complemented by a creamy garlic sauce on the side that provided a cooling complement. Our Beef Kofta, skewered and grilled to perfection, provided a wonderful contrast of texture between the exterior char and soft, juicy interior. The blend of heady spices was distinctly Lebanese, with the hint of cinnamon adding a sweet aftertaste. The accompanying flatbread boasted a generous layer of sweet pepper paste, perfectly melding with a sprinkle of aromatic herbs. Soft yet slightly crispy, the bread served as a harmonious palate cleanser between bites of grilled meats. As a surprise, Chef Ayman graced us with a special off-menu treat – a delightful ravioli, meticulously stuffed with ricotta and spinach and enveloped in a lavish cheese sauce. Before we delved into the dessert course, we noted that The Social isn't just about evening fare. The restaurant also featured a well-appointed barista bar for coffee aficionados and a morning breakfast buffet, adding another layer to the already multifaceted dining experience here. To round off our evening, we had to sample the aptly named Decadent Chocolate Brownie – a warm, fudgy delight paired with vanilla ice cream that oozed with chocolatey goodness when we cut into it. The creamy, fluffy Dulce de Leche Cheese that accompanied it was a balanced yet extravagant end to our dining experience. Reflecting on the menu, one can't help but notice the eclectic mix of cuisines from across the globe. Such diverse offerings mean that whether you're dining with family or friends, everyone is bound to find something that tantalises their taste buds. From adventurous foodies to those with classic preferences, the vast range ensures that all are well catered for. This universal appeal positions the restaurant as a top choice for gatherings where varied tastes need to be satisfied. ✤

A TRIUMPH IN CULINARY CONTRASTS Laura Morris tasted the best of two worlds on a visit to SUSHISAMBA Doha.

W

hen you hear SUSHISAMBA you probably conjure up images of a place predominantly serving sushi, that plays loud beats reminiscent of a samba fiesta - three contrasting cuisines forced together as a way to simply tap into something ‘different’. I’m glad to tell you this couldn’t be further from reality! SUSHISAMBA Doha is, in fact, a celebration of cultures, styles and influences, where diners are guaranteed an experience that is second to none. One of the most in-demand establishments in the city; it certainly lives up to the hype. As the name denotes, sushi, a staple of Japan, forms part of a rich and varied menu, which is combined with ‘Samba’, the dynamic essence of Peruvian and Brazilian charm. Waldorf Astoria Lusail is the home of SUSHISAMBA Doha, a statement destination, designed to impress. The moment you descend the stairs, you are whisked away to a world of visual magnificence: a home of colour, texture and eclectic design. Only at SUSHISAMBA will you find a unique blend of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian culture and cuisine. SUSHISAMBA is born of the energy and spirit of these three distinct cultures, a tri-cultural coalition. Brazilian terrazzo flooring warmly welcomes you, while colossal metal trees stand tall, creating an atmosphere that leaves you awestruck. The expansive dining area, enclosed in glass, allows natural light to gracefully dance through. Carefully curated, the space feels intimate, cosy and elegant, featuring both indoor and outdoor dining areas as well as an exclusive beach club. SUSHISAMBA Doha Beach Club is the first of its kind, and the only and first Beach Club of SUSHISAMBA brand worldwide. We were shown to our seats and welcomed with SAMBA Crisps, a vibrant selection, with colours that mimic the orange and golden tones of the setting. These were served with aji Amarillo, a sauce that packs a punch. As fiery as the samba, the heat danced on my tongue and I knew we were in for a feast of flavours! The first course arrived and what a sight to behold. I was dazzled by the spectacle: it was vivid and exciting and it smelled divine! Wagyu Gyoza came with a smooth kabocha purée and sweet soy drizzle, irresistible from the first bite. The chefs pan-fry them so the soft, perfectly salted meat is wrapped in a slightly crunchy blanket which adds a delightful texture. We next dug into Shrimp Tempura, the best of its kind – creamy, crunchy and with just the right amount of heat. The black truffle vinaigrette an elegant addition to the flavour, which really elevates the dish. Sitting alongside, just waiting to be devoured were Crispy Taquitos, two, light and fresh yellowtail taquitos in crunchy shells, delicately crafted with avocado and miso. Our waiter advised us to use the fresh lime to intensify the flavours and he was not wrong! The final dish in this collection and, for us, one of the standouts: the Chilean Sea Bass Anticuchos with miso and Peruvian corn. The fresh fish was cooked to perfection – large plump pieces, we savoured every mouthful! The food kept coming and only got better as Chef Esteban delivered us the exquisite Japanese Wagyu Ishiyaki. Thinly sliced and delicately seasoned, this dish was accompanied by a selection of sauces: a luxurious truffle option, yellow chili and panko, and a fiery spicy sauce, so that each slice is cooked to fact magazine

your preference. The chef's expertise shone as he seared the succulent Wagyu on a sizzling-hot stone at our table, creating a sensory spectacle as satisfying as it was delicious! Fully embracing the unique blend of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian flavours, we strutted into the mains. Our first offering, the Mushroom Kamameshi, is a dish that features a delectable medley of assorted mushrooms, artfully garnished with fragrant black truffle shavings and crisp garlic chips. Each bite was a delightful journey through earthy flavours and rich textures but it was soon surpassed by Moqueca Mista, a harmonious blend of shrimp, squid, sea bass, mussels and clams in a luscious sea of coconut milk and dende oil, served alongside flavourful Chimichurri Rice. This Brazilian coastal-inspired masterpiece showcased a diverse selection of seafood, delivering an unforgettable taste of the ocean's bounty that transports the palate straight to the shores of Brazil. The sushi selection, of course, exceeded expectations. It looked, good and tasted even better! Expertly crafted by Chef Manuel, whose nickname among the SUSHISAMBA Doha team is ‘The Sushi Master.’ A true masterpiece, presented in a grand bowl, where vibrancy, intricacy and invitation converge, among the standout selections was the SAMBA Doha, boasting lobster, sesame aioli, kizami yuba and crispy rice encased in a satisfyingly crunchy warm coating. Equally enticing was the Tiger Maki, a fusion of crabmeat, prawn tempura, wasabi mayo and beetroot yogurt, elegantly drizzled with eel sauce. The nigiri on this platter was delightful too, with perfectly cooked and seasoned rice, harmonising flawlessly with the incredibly fresh fish. Of course, by this point we were fit to burst, but we could not leave without at least a sample of the delectable desserts on 68

offer. For me, the Ginger Ice Cream Sando, served with vanilla short bread was a clear favourite thanks to its contrasting combination of warm ginger spice and smooth rich creamy ice cream. We also enjoyed the Lemon and Yuzu Pie, a dish that encapsulates Japan’s sweet flavours, with a shard of crispy ginger meringue and drops of a thick yuzu marmalade, topped with a tangy mango sauce. What’s not to love! It was evident that SUSHISAMBA Doha offers guests a vibrant fusion of flavours and a dynamic portfolio of plates that are fresh, spicy and decadent with culinary creativity. Here, the precision of Japan, and the passion of Peru and Brazil, seamlessly marry with a touch of theatrical flair. ✤

• STAYCATION hey say one should never compromise when looking for an escape from the everyday grind. Well, when it comes to modern luxury, this hotel certainly does not compromise on its offering of a sophisticated, wellness retreat. The Park Hyatt brand dedicates itself to creating exceptional, intimate and memorable experiences. Just a short stroll from Souk Wakif, in Msheireb Downtown, Park Hyatt Doha is a landmark in its own right and a lesson for us all in in what a glamorous get-away truly means. Stepping foot into to the secluded lobby area, a profound sense of exclusivity enveloped us, emphasising the importance placed on privacy here. It was abundantly evident that we had embarked on a journey into a realm of opulence and sophistication. In a testament to the meticulous attention to detail that defines this space: a thickset marble counter stands as a symbol of quality artistry, its gleaming surface reflecting the soft, ambient light, casting an ethereal glow upon the understated surroundings. Each piece of furniture seems to have been carefully curated to ensure maximum comfort and aesthetic harmony. Amidst this symphony of modern luxury, a collection of artwork adorns the walls and hallways. The pieces not only captivate the eye but also convey a profound sense of cultural and artistic richness, another nod to the impeccable taste of the establishment.

Rooms It was clear from the moment we entered our room that everything had been tastefully chosen, exuding slick sophistication that perfectly aligns with the overall tone of the hotel. This seamless blend of modernity and comfort creates an environment that nurtures both relaxation and productivity. A glance around revealed tables adorned with carefully considered books, inviting a peaceful moment of reading. The bed, of an extraordinary size, promised indulgent slumber and unparalleled comfort. The room's technology was nothing short of exemplary, allowing effortless control of the lights, blinds and music system with the mere touch of a button; raising the privacy screens revealed an awe-inspiring vista of the entire Corniche. The bathroom, an oasis of opulence, boasted a designer marble interior, featuring a deep soaking tub that tempts you to relax and let the worries of the day melt away. A double vanity sink added a touch of indulgence, while luxury amenities and toiletries invited us to indulge and revel in the exquisite details. The striking combination of high-end, designer furnishings and a warm, homely ambience set this room apart from the competition.

A soothing ambience envelops you like a cocoon of relaxation as you enter the spa, with every one of the senses treated to some calmness. From the subdued lighting to the rich fragment scents filling the space, you are being invited to chill from the moment you arrive! It did not go unnoticed that the therapist took the time to understand my specific needs, and applied just the right pressure to invigorate both body and mind. The use of hot scented oil added further sensory indulgence to my session. Now, I’m going to say it: the therapy bed has to be one of the most comfortable I have ever experienced! Restaurants Anis is known for its artisanal, well-balanced, delicious meals. Slick interiors and an attractive menu marry together to create the perfect place to grab a healthy bite. The Power Lunch offers a vibrant and varied set menu that feels naughtier than it really is and it’s certainly value for money too! Starters included the Caprese Salad, Beef Bresaola and Smoked Salmon Sandwich, served on a warm chunk of brioche and presented impeccably. Moving on to mains, a Crunchy Cauliflower Salad was served warm, in the form of breaded balls, with a smear of cauliflower puree to add some creaminess to the otherwise crisp textures. If that doesn’t whet your appetite, then go for the Fish and Chips – delicious cod fingers served with a generous helping of potato wedges. In the cooler months, you can savour your meal al fresco, making it an ideal dining experience in the heart of vibrant Msheireb Downtown. Opus restaurant seamlessly merges French and Qatari influences, crafting an extraordinary gastronomic adventure. Their breakfast menu entices with a lavish buffet featuring a variety of offerings to tickle everyone’s fancy. A range of à la carte dishes can be ordered, alongside an extensive buffet boasting a wide range of delicate, fresh pastries and artisanal bread, all to be washed down with an aromatic coffee of your choosing. The pièce de résistance is the raspberry-filled croissant, a flaky, buttery masterpiece. At Opus, you are not merely a guest; you are a spectator in a captivating culinary performance. The open kitchen allows you to witness the artists in action as they whip up dishes with finesse and precision. Listen to the tantalising sounds of chefs crafting the perfect Hollandaise sauce for Eggs Benedict, while the aroma of spinach and avocado toast fills the air. A recent addition to their offerings, The Truffle Menu elevated our evening dining experience. A full menu is dedicated to highlighting this key ingredient in an elegant and unique way. The showstopper here was the deliciously earthy Mushroom Risotto, made with four types of mushrooms, together with carnaroli rice and parmesan shavings, it offered a harmonious flavour that we savoured to the last spoonful! The spectacle of skill and creativity was a true feast for both the eyes and the taste buds and is well worth a visit. Sora, perched on the 21st floor, is the true standout and we headed there for brunch. The restaurant exudes an atmosphere of sophistication and charm. High ceilings give a sense of grandeur, while the hanging pink lampshades create an inviting glow, which is only enhanced by the entertaining saxophonist who welcomed us. Having recently undergone a stunning redesign, this brunch now boasts an open buffet style. Here, an outstanding selection 80

The Robata grilling station, where chefs were on hand to prepare succulent cuts of meat, paired with your choice of exquisite sauce! Save space for dessert, as you’ll want to try it all! (I’d go for the Saffron Milk Cake myself, but sample the lot if you have the space.) The choice of food and drink options was extensive and, coupled with the breath-taking view of West Bay from the terrace, you could easily while away your Friday afternoon here. The shift to an open buffet style encourages exploration and creates a brunch that brilliantly blends global flavours with Japanese influences. Whether you're a connoisseur or a beginner, it's a culinary journey worth savouring. Arriving in Style The moment I stepped into the lobby, I knew I was in a place that blended the bustling energy of a downtown hotel with intimate, welcoming details. Located in the heart of the city, and near the business district and Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), the hotel felt like the epicentre of Doha's vibrant urban life. Guests were coming and going, each contributing to the lively atmosphere. Soft seating areas dotted the space, lit by candles whose glow added a warm, organic touch. The polished brass ceiling emanated a golden hue, further accentuated by the tasteful lighting.

A Warm Welcome Check-in was quick and seamless and, within minutes, a friendly porter escorted me to the lift. He ensured everything was in order before leaving me to enjoy my new temporary home – a spacious Junior Suite featuring floor-to-ceiling windows with views of West Bay. The room was a sumptuous blend of gold and navy blue, hinting at a royal aesthetic. The golden curtains, which served as the perfect foil to the matching walls, created an ensemble that felt both regal and harmoniously coordinated. The dark-wood furniture was a welcome counterpoint, each piece lending a rich, timeless quality to the room. The centrepiece, without a doubt, was the bed. Headed by a dark 84

wood panel, it invited me to recline in true royal fashion, turning sleep into an event rather than a mere necessity. There was a large work desk, allowing me to catch up on emails with the fast complimentary wi-fi and, in the elegantly tiled bathroom, I was spoiled with a deep soaking tub and a rain shower. With 579 rooms and suites, the hotel offers many options from Deluxe rooms to the opulent four-bedroom Penthouse Apartment, perfect for long stays. All rooms provide upscale amenities like Nespresso coffee makers, marble bathrooms, and Marriott signature bedding for a restful sleep.

Cucina – Authentic Italian On my first night, I dined at Cucina – a traditional Italian tavern reimagined for the modern connoisseur. A live musical ensemble greeted guests with familiar tunes, harmonising with the warm red-brick walls and the low, atmospheric lighting. Presiding over this gastronomic theatre was Chef Claudio, whose presence extended far beyond the kitchen. Mingling with guests, his warmth and affability enhanced the ambience. The meal commenced with an ethereal burrata, laced with the earthy undertones of truffle. I was treated to a decadent carbonara and surprising ravioli that consisted of delicate pockets stuffed with ricotta, swathed in a tangy butter

lemon sauce. The beef cheeks that followed were slowcooked to sublime tenderness. Cannolis, a quintessential Sicilian dessert, with crisp shells and feather-light ricotta filling, were the perfect end to the meal. Every element converged to create an unforgettable journey through Italian cuisine.

The Rejuvenating Saray Spa No five-star hotel experience is complete without some pampering, so I spent my second morning at the Saray Spa. This lavish facility provides pure relaxation with seven artfully designed treatment rooms, two Hammam treatment areas and skilled therapists. I was greeted with a thorough consultation, conducted in the reception area. The treatment was clearly outlined by Rai, my attentive therapist for the day. Opting for a Balinese massage, I was treated to a technique known not only for its relaxation benefits but also for improving blood circulation, relieving muscle tension and boosting both emotional and physical well-being. The session unfolded like a well-choreographed dance from feet to head. Though the default pressure was gentle to medium, Rai adapted to my preference for a more robust touch. She began with a purifying foot cleanse

Great Gatsby Brunch – Jazz, Glamour and Gastronomy The highlight of my stay was the Great Gatsby Brunch at New York Steakhouse, a novel concept in high-end dining. As I settled into a plush leather chair, listening to the soothing jazz renditions supplied by the in-house band, the culinary journey began. Standout moments included Cecina beef ham being elegantly carved at our tableside. Also, an indulgent Beluga caviar service accompanied by a detailed explanation from the chef. The theatrical Great Seafood Tower stole the show with its plume of dry ice vapour. Fresh oysters met mignonette, marinated lobster carried hints of lemon and cilantro, King crab was lifted by wasabi mayo, and tuna tartare got a twist with lemon gel and Kewpie mayo. The pièce de résistance was the Slow-Roasted Prime Rib, presented from a classic trolley, leading to an array of signature meats like tenderloin and leg of lamb. Dessert was equally impeccable – a selection of NYSH cheesecakes followed by a refined selection of cheese and crackers.

Aqua Lounge – An Elevated Night Out On the last evening, I relaxed at the Aqua Lounge, perched atop the hotel. As the pulsating beats of a DJ filled the air, I was comfortably seated in my own secluded section, giving me a sense of privacy and exclusivity. The contemporary menu showcased poolside classics and enticing light bites. I gravitated towards the cold mezze, indulging in the creamy hummus and smoky baba ganoush. Adding to the laid-back atmosphere, I ordered a side of perfectly crisp chilli fries, which I satisfyingly ate by hand. The panoramic views of the city added a touch of grandeur to our evening. Aqua Lounge felt like a cool, hip hangout in the heart of the city – the perfect place to chat with friends, have a bite to eat or simply relax and enjoy a hookah.

An Unforgettable Getaway My time at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Doha not only met but exceeded all expectations, offering a truly memorable stay. From the inviting rooms to exceptional dining and world-class service, this hotel has it all. It particularly shines due to its strategic location near the DECC. During our stay, the Geneva International Motor Show was in full swing, and it was evident that both delegates and attendees were making the most of the hotel's facilities. This location proves invaluable for business professionals seeking quick access to the city centre, as well as for those indulging in staycations or navigating layovers. With its diverse dining choices and top-notch facilities, it's more than just a place to stay – it's a destination waiting to be discovered.✤

’ve always known Abu Dhabi to be a cultural hub in the region and so, when I learned that I was headed there, I was thrilled. Saadiyat Island, which translates to island of happiness, is undergoing extensive development and is expected to become the state’s cultural centre. After a breezy flight, we were transferred to Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort, one of the six exclusive hotels and resorts on the island. I spotted residential complexes en route, many of which looked like something from the 1,001 Nights! The architecture here is breathtaking and unique. It wasn’t long before we reached the luxurious oasis that was to be our home for the next couple of days. The property is strategically located, 20 minutes from the airport and city centre, keeping transit time to a minimum.

A Natural Haven On entering the lobby, I was transported to an oceanic paradise. A glittering installation created from more than 100 droplets of hand-blown Bohemian crystals and reminiscent of the azure blue waters that surround the island stood out. In fact, all parts of the property have been designed to offer a seamless transition from the hotel to the adjoining natural haven, with dolphins that swim close to the shore in the wee hours of the morning to the sociable birds that join you for an al fresco breakfast. The sparrows aren’t the only ones with a friendly demeanor. Driven by a team of proactive, dutiful staff members, the service here is top-notch and personal. Everyone, from the lobby attendant to the manager, is warm and welcoming – a testament to generous Arabian hospitality. A painless check-in later, I headed to my Ocean Deluxe King Room, which offers breathtaking views of the award-winning beach. Saadiyat Island was recently crowned the Middle East’s Leading Beach Destination at the World Travel Awards for the 12th consecutive year. I had some time before we headed out for the first leg of our adventure so, I made myself a cup of coffee which I enjoyed on the cosy love chair – a circular sofa-like seat – on the balcony, but not before I explored a little. A fully stocked fridge, a Nespresso machine, a TV with local and international channels, complimentary wi-fi, a walk-in shower and separate bath… what more could I have asked for!

Arts & Culture Our generous hosts and the organisers of this eventful trip had planned an exciting day ahead. Our first destination, The Abrahamic Family House is a unique space with a mosque, church and synagogue under the same roof. Welcoming people of all faiths, it upholds peaceful coexistence and acceptance among different beliefs, nationalities and cultures – just like the UAE – home to people from all walks of life. Each of the houses of worship is symbolically designed; the crucifix in the church has a silhouette of Jesus and not a statue with a face because depicting God is forbidden in Islam and Judaism; the mosque’s roof 90

is reminiscent of the cave (of Hira) where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation. Numbers such as three, five and seven, which hold significance in all three religions, are incorporated into the design. You need to be modestly dressed but there is a counter to borrow a coverup. It’s a soulful, interactive experience and, if you’re lucky, you might catch a wedding! There’s a gift shop too and a garden where you can relax. Manarat Al Saadiyat (MAS), a community centre, was next. Designed to host a variety of events from workshops in the amphitheatre and immersive exhibitions at their sprawling galleries to film screenings at Cine’MAS’ – their film fest – to art installations in the garden, this place has so much personality. The programme keeps changing so it’s best to check before you visit. There’s also an art studio that you could walk in and use for a nominal fee. Great to keep the kids busy for an hour or two! Of course, we couldn’t miss Louvre Abu Dhabi, which has a newly added canoe rental option perfect for the winter months. On our visit, we stuck to exploring the museum. I strongly recommend hiring a guide because this place is huge. Further, having someone knowledgeable (and passionate!) with us helped us understand the displays better. It’s a lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes and you can always unwind at the café later. The outdoor area, with the specially designed dome, is a wonder to behold. During the day, the sunlight passing through creates a beautiful pattern on the ground. Saadiyat Culture District, where these sites are located, is fast developing and tourists can expect a number of museums to open in the near future, such as Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. The latter will have narrow glass atriums resembling the wing tips of a falcon – the UAE’s national bird.

After a long and eventful day, we were glad to be returning to the hotel. Dinner was at Mare Mare, the Italian restaurant, which serves a modern spin on classics. We sat indoors but they have an outdoor area overlooking the beach, great for cooler days. Famished, we tucked into the starters. Fritto Misto, a selection of batter-fried seafood and vegetables, is a wonderful sharing dish. I recommend the Bruschetta Mista, a set of three sour dough slices topped with premium toppings and drizzled with the finest olive oil. We could taste it in every bite. I enjoyed the Spaghetti Alla Carbonara for main, with a glass of grape. It was creamy, complemented by the moreish saltiness of the bacon. The dining offerings at Jumeirah at Saadiyat are diverse. During our stay, we also ate at the Levantine restaurant. Tean, meaning fig in Arabic, serves some of the best grills I have ever eaten. The succulent and lightly spiced shish taouk and equally juicy lamb kofta went so well with the vermicelli Rice – a light side dish that took on the flavours of the meat. I recommend the falafel, which was a hit with the vegans and carnivores at the table – crunchy on the fact magazine

outside, mushy on the inside – you know a restaurant is good when it gets the simple things right. On the second day, we dined at Beirut Sur Mer, at Mamsha Al Saadiyat, a vibrant beachfront venue. An extravagant Lebanese feast best describes our experience. There are other restaurants here, serving varied cuisines, from sushi to steaks. Day passes to the adjoining SOUL beach, that stretches for one kilometre, are available or you could enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade. The island’s beaches truly are the jewel in its crown. Determined to experience them, my companion and I headed to the hotel’s beach every morning. We followed it with a sumptuous breakfast, served at White which has a pearly, oyster-shell-inspired interior. I was thoroughly impressed with the variety on offer. There were so many stations including one just for avocado on toast! Every palate will find something here, Indian staples such as idli, English baked beans, American hashbrowns… Carb enthusiasts can explore a variety of Danish pastries and breads and those on the health wagon will find their solace in the beckoning fruit, cereal and muesli counters.

Fitness Fanatic Speaking of health, the island offers many options to stay active. Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is the Gulf’s first beachfront course. One of the highlights, for me, was spotting Arabian gazelles. The club is home to Hawksbill restaurant, the namesake of the turtle species that calls this island home. There’s a conservation programme to protect them too. Sustainability is at the heart of virtually every initiative on this natural island. 92

The Creator Need to Know:

The movie is an American science fiction action thriller that’s set in the distant future amidst a war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence (AI). An ex-special-forces agent has been recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI, who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war by destroying mankind itself.

Director: Gareth Edwards Cast: John David Washington, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney

Grossman, Matt Czuchry, Kim Kardashian, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Cara Delevingne

Why Is It Worth Watching?

First premiered in 2011, the series has continued to grow in popularity with every season, especially since each instalment is a self-contained plot exploring a different horror subgenre. The show manages to incorporate elements that are rooted in real-life fears and anxieties, which makes it even more spine-chilling and unsettling. The latest season has been inspired by the thriller novel Delicate Condition by Danielle Valentine. Anna Victoria Alcott (Roberts) is undergoing another cycle of IVF and feels broken due to previous failed attempts, but is still determined to make it happen. Anna’s career is currently on the rise, and it’s been quite difficult trying to find the balance between work and personal life, to the point where she even pushes back a doctor’s appointment to do some press. Meanwhile, Anna’s crazed publicist friend Siobhan (Kardashian) is concerned about the former focusing on the ongoing Oscars campaign. Things start looking up when Anna finds out she’s finally pregnant but they take a turn for the unexpected. Further tragedy strikes when she suffers a heart-breaking miscarriage or at least that’s what they’ve all been telling her, but she can’t seem to shake off her haunting belief that her baby is still alive inside her.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The movie begins with a prologue showcasing the steady rise of AI. Humanity has been at peace and thriving thanks to AI robots that have been integrated into society. That’s until they detonate a nuclear warhead in Los Angeles, without a warning, killing millions. In response, the US and its Western allies pledge to eradicate AI from Earth in order to safeguard humanity. They eventually succeed with the exception of New Asia, a country whose people still live in harmony with AI. The US military launches an extensive campaign against them, mainly seeking to assassinate Nirmata aka the Creator. Sergeant Joshua Taylor (Washington) is recruited on a mission to find and destroy the deadly weapon. He’s shocked to learn that it is just a robotic child. After interacting with and understanding her powers, Taylor finds himself questioning everything including the mission – does he stay true or change his plans? The movie is visually breathtaking in its depiction of a future world and the considered storyline asks an interesting question that plays off a classic trope: will AI really become our final enemy or is it our fear that will ultimately cause the end?

POP

Javelin By Sufjan Stevens

Perfect Picture By Hannah Diamond

The tenth studio album by American musician Sufjan Stevens, Javelin, released via Asthmatic Kitty Records, is a tribute to the artist’s late partner. The opener Goodbye Evergreen sets the tone, with its sombre vibe which goes on to turn celebratory – it pays homage to a life that once was with a choir – a recurring element throughout the album. The acoustic guitar on A Running Start complements the soft energy of the track in which Stevens seems to be asking his beloved to linger on a little longer, possibly drawing parallels between their presence and nature; “I see the light upon the lake/ The silver moon, the water snake”. The title track is intense and further delves into the theme – death. Once again, you will find Stevens thinking (read singing) aloud, his thoughts interwoven with stringsy melodies, forming a pattern against the “Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh” of the choir. Every song feels like a peek into the innermost corners of the singer and lover’s heart; unsaid words, angsty silences… however, hope floats. The closing track There’s A World revolves around the afterlife – a light at the end of the tunnel. If you’re looking for something to listen on a winter’s night, this one fits the bill.

British singer and visual artist Hannah Diamond has dropped her second studio album Perfect Picture via PC Music and it’s a thorough pop fest. At first, you might think the songs have undertones of love and breakups. However, over the course of the album, you realise it’s much deeper than that. The title track underpins the struggle of keeping up with the ‘perfect picture’ – public image. Again, on No FX, Diamond sings “You love me with no effects on”, which hints at the struggle that is maintaining one’s social image. On Poster Girl, we see the artist longing to be like the girl in the magazine, suggesting an internal conflict. Lip Sync is in keeping with the overarching theme of this musical creation. Diamond’s auto-tuned vocals explore perspective and self-image – “Maybe, one day I’ll be the real thing”. Affirmations is a pick-me-up with positive undertones. “I don't have to be somebody else/The best version of me is myself”, sings Diamond. Electropop tunes lend the album a lively, playful vibe. If you’re looking for a club-friendly album to groove to, try this one.

Rooted in craftsmanship and innovation; an intricate hand-knitted crochet look features Responsible Mohair Standard mohair, while fine details include the delicate leather tassels that adorn wool outerwear, made from off-cut materials. Nature continues to inspire this season’s colour palette – soothing neutral tones complement rich earthy browns, alongside bespoke prints while matte textures meet metallics and shine. Quality and longevity remain at the collection’s core; adjustable elements ensure the perfect fit of a classic well-tailored suit, while reversible pieces deliver versatility ensuring each item serves a purpose. Everyday pieces are enhanced through exploratory textures – soft leather, herringbone and chunky knits. Material consideration continues throughout, with more than 92% of the collection made from more sustainably sourced materials, including high-quality knits crafted from recycled and GCS cashmere.

Tech To The Rescue

Disney just celebrated 100 years of entertaining generations of children (and the young at heart!). To commemorate this milestone, exhibitions featuring artefacts from popular classics such as Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs to the more recent Encanto, as well as other memorabilia including the original costumes and installations, are being held.
