“Summer afternoon – summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” - Henry James “
June in Qatar means two things: everyone suddenly becoming obsessed with indoor plans, and every group chat turning into a stream of ‘beach before it gets unbearable’ messages. Which is exactly why this issue ended up balancing both. Our cover story is all about indoor activities, packed with ideas for staying entertained once the heat fully settles in. That said, we’re not completely ready to give up on the outdoors just yet. We’ve also rounded up some of our favourite beaches while stepping onto sand still feels fun rather than mildly character-building.
Thankfully, the city’s events calendar is finally picking back up after a quieter few months because of the regional situation, and it’s doing so with range. Throughout June, Meryal Waterpark Beach is hosting a full Nickelodeon takeover with live shows and family entertainment, Place Vendôme is home to Fables in Fashion, bringing classical Arabic literature into conversation with contemporary fashion, and Lusail Stadium is opening its doors for behind-the-scenes World Cup venue tours.
On the food front, we’ve basically made eating our full-time job ahead of the Fact Dining Awards Qatar 2026, making our way across the city at Mina Terrace, Mulberry Tavern, Mumble Jungle and Cucina. We also caught up with Kazem Shamas, General Manager at Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Doha; Stefano Terrenghi, Executive Chef at Lucia’s Doha; and Michele Petrara, the man behind Il Galante at Banyan Tree Doha at La Cigale Mushaireb.
June also marks the start of holiday season for some, so if you’re thinking about trading Qatar for somewhere a little more tropical, we’ve rounded up a selection of beach escapes guaranteed to tempt you into opening Skyscanner ‘just to look’. Turquoise water, white sand, full switch-off mode… dangerously convincing. But for anyone whose ideal escape involves horsepower instead of boarding passes, there’s plenty in this issue for car lovers too, from our drive of the Maserati Grecale Modena to highlights from the Beijing Auto Show, where China’s biggest manufacturers unveiled the latest models and technologies in a very clear statement about their growing global ambitions. So yes, it’s officially too hot to function properly. But at least there’s plenty happening while we all collectively pretend otherwise!

Qatar Calendar’s new month-long event at Meryal Waterpark Beach is bringing Nickelodeon characters, live shows and family activities to Qetaifan Island all through June.

If you’re already trying to figure out how to survive summer with children in Doha, here’s one more option to add to the list. Throughout June, Meryal Waterpark Beach is turning into a giant Nickelodeon-themed entertainment space with Summer Splash, a new family event featuring characters from PAW Patrol and SpongeBob SquarePants
Running daily from June 1 to 30, as part of Visit Qatar’s Hala Summer programme, the activation combines live entertainment, interactive games, themed zones and beach activities across Meryal Beach on Qetaifan Island North. This feels very much designed for the generation of parents now introducing their own childhood favourites to their kids. Depending on your age, there’s a high chance either SpongeBob or PAW Patrol has already taken over your household at some point. If not, prepare for your children to suddenly start talking exclusively about Adventure Bay for the next month.
The beach space itself is being transformed into themed areas inspired by both Adventure Bay and Bikini Bottom, complete with air-conditioned zones, live performances, activities and character appearances running throughout the evening. Basically, it’s designed to keep families entertained without melting in the heat.
The PAW Patrol section includes daily meet-and-greets with Chase, Marshall, Rubble and Skye, alongside activities inspired by the series. Children will be able to slide down a version of the Lookout Tower, try an AR trampoline experience themed around Skye and take part in interactive games including ‘Fighting Fire with Marshall’ and the Sea Patroller digital experience. Meanwhile, the SpongeBob SquarePants side of the event
will feature live stage shows with SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward, as well as underwater-themed activities and character appearances throughout the month. There will also be photo opportunities across the venue, so expect a lot of parents stopping every three minutes for another picture.
Outside the themed zones, organisers are also planning beach football, volleyball, sand play areas, water gun battles and inflatable pool activities across the venue, leaning fully into the summer beach-club-for-kids atmosphere.
The event takes place every day from 6pm to 11pm and is free for the general public to attend from 6pm onwards through timed entry sessions. Guests staying at Rixos Premium Qetaifan Island North and Meryal Waterpark ticket holders will have earlier priority access between 4pm and 6pm. Importantly, organisers say the activation operates separately from the waterpark itself, meaning it will continue independently from any waterpark closures during the summer period.
At this point, Doha summers are basically about finding indoor activities, evening plans and anything involving water. This one just happens to come with SpongeBob, Skye and a lot of very excited children. ✤

Lusail Stadium’s new behind-the-scenes tour lets fans revisit one of Qatar 2022’s most iconic venues thanks to Qatar Airways Holidays, but bookings close soon.
If you’re still not completely over the World Cup (or slightly obsessed as we head into the next one), this might be your sign to finally visit Lusail Stadium properly. Qatar Airways Holidays has launched its new behind-the-scenes stadium experience, giving fans access to areas usually reserved for players, coaches and media crews until June 6.
The Discover Lusail Stadium - Qatar 2022 Tour takes visitors inside the venue that hosted some of the tournament’s biggest moments, including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 final. And yes, that means you can walk through the same corridors used by football’s biggest names during the competition. The 90-minute guided experience includes access to the VIP lounge, press conference room, players’ changing rooms and pitch-side areas, giving a closer look at one of Qatar’s most recognisable stadiums.
Basically, if you ever watched Lionel Messi lift the World Cup trophy and thought ‘I’d love to stand there once’, this is probably the closest you’re getting. Beyond the football nostalgia, the experience also dives into the
design of Lusail Stadium itself, which became one of the defining landmarks of the tournament thanks to its gold exterior and architecture inspired by traditional Arabic bowls and lanterns.
Tours are limited to 20 people per group and need to be booked in advance through Qatar Airways Holidays using Cash + Avios. Lusail Stadium is accessible through the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram, with transfer buses also available for passengers transiting through Hamad International Airport. Even years after the tournament, Lusail Stadium still has that slightly surreal post-World Cup atmosphere. This tour feels very much designed for people who want to relive a little bit of that moment before Doha fully moves on to the next mega-event. ✤

Qatari artist Ghada Al Suwaidi designed Pierre Gasly’s helmet for the Canadian Grand Prix, and millions of Formula 1 fans got to see her work.
Formula 1 helmets are a big deal. They’re personal, instantly recognisable and photographed constantly during race weekends. Which is exactly why this latest collaboration feels pretty cool for Qatar’s art scene. For the second year running, Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative has teamed up with BWT Alpine F1 driver Pierre Gasly on a series of artist-designed helmets for selected races throughout the Formula 1 season. This year’s first design comes from Qatari artist Ghada Al Suwaidi and debuted at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
If you follow Doha’s creative scene, chances are you have already come across Ghada’s work before. A graduate of VCUarts Qatar, she’s known for colourful murals, illustrations and digital artwork inspired by everyday life in the city, often mixing nostalgia, humour and local references through bold contemporary visuals. Now, that same style is found on one of the world’s fastestmoving sporting stages.
Speaking about the collaboration, Ghada described the experience as a bit surreal, adding: “What excites me most is the scale – knowing something so personal will be seen by millions, in a completely unexpected setting.” That’s probably what makes the project interesting. Formula 1 isn't exactly where you'd expect to find conversations around art and cultural storytelling, which is precisely why the helmet stands out. Additional artist collaborations are also planned later this year for races in Mexico City and Doha as part of the Qatar-Canada-Mexico 2026 Year of Culture programme. ✤

Singalong songs, sea witches and Disney nostalgia are taking over THIS Theatre this June.
Ariel is officially leaving the ocean and heading to Mesaimeer. Doha Players is staging Disney’s The Little Mermaid at THIS Theatre from June 4 to 13, bringing one of Disney’s most loved stories back to the stage in Doha. The family musical follows Ariel, the mermaid princess obsessed with the human world above the sea. After meeting Prince Eric, she makes a risky deal with Ursula in exchange for three days as a human, which, obviously, doesn’t go smoothly. If you grew up with the film, you already know the rest of the lineup: expect Prince Eric doing princely things, Sebastian stressing everybody out and Scuttle causing absolute chaos. Ursula is also in the mix, naturally, serving camp villain energy and stealing scenes the way Disney villains always do.
Doha Players says the show is designed for all ages, with afternoon (2.30pm) and evening (7.30pm) performances running throughout the week. The theatre group, which has been active in Qatar for decades, is also inviting audiences to come dressed in their favourite Disney costumes and stick around for selfies and photos with the cast, which means parents should prepare for at least 400 photos before the interval. Performances are open to all audiences, and the production promises plenty of nostalgia for anyone who grew up with Ariel’s story. Tickets are already on sale, and yes, the good seats will probably disappear fast. ✤

Jiwan, the National Museum of Qatar favourite, has launched a new private dining experience designed for smaller, more intimate gatherings.
We never really need an excuse to visit the National Museum of Qatar. Between the architecture, the exhibitions and the excuse to stop at Jiwan afterwards for one of Doha’s best lunch views,

Qatar Reads is turning traditional storytelling into wearable art with a new exhibition inspired by Maqamat Al-Hariri.
Let’s be honest: most people aren’t heading to Place Vendôme expecting a literary moment. But between the cafés, luxury stores and endless air conditioning breaks, the mall is now also
it’s already one of the city’s easiest lifestyle recommendations. But for anyone who loves Jiwan’s food and wants something a little more personal, the restaurant has now launched a new private dining concept called Jiwan at Home. The idea is simple: instead of going to the restaurant, the restaurant comes to you. Created for gatherings of up to 10 guests, the experience brings Jiwan’s culinary team directly into private homes for customised lunches, dinners or canapé-style receptions. According to the restaurant, everything is tailored around the host’s preferences, from the menu itself to the table presentation and overall atmosphere. On the day, dishes are prepared on-site by the Jiwan team, while dedicated staff handle the service throughout the event.
The goal is clearly to recreate the restaurant’s warm, hospitalityfocussed experience in a smaller and more private setting. Located on the fourth floor of the National Museum of Qatar, Jiwan has built a strong following in Doha for its contemporary take on regional cuisine and its focus on Middle Eastern flavours and sharing-style dining. The restaurant also received Bib Gourmand distinction, adding to its reputation as one of the city’s standout dining spots. Bookings and enquiries for Jiwan at Home are already open through the restaurant. ✤
hosting a fashion exhibition inspired by one of the best-known works of classical Arabic literature.
Running until June 17 on the Canal floor at Gate 1, Fables in Fashion brings together eight Qatari designers reinterpreting Maqamat Al-Hariri through contemporary fashion pieces. The exhibition is part of Qatar Reads’ annual ‘One Book, One Doha’ campaign, which each year spotlights a major work of Arabic literature through community events and creative projects.
This year’s focus is Maqamat Al-Hariri, a collection famous for its storytelling, sharp humour and larger-than-life characters. Instead of presenting the text in a traditional way, the exhibition translates themes from the book into fabrics, silhouettes and visual design. Think less museum display case and more conceptual fashion installation, inside one of Doha’s busiest public spaces.
The project was created in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and M7, with the idea of making classical Arabic literature feel more accessible to audiences who may not normally engage with it through books alone. And fashion probably makes sense as a way in. Even if you’ve never read Maqamat Al-Hariri, you can still connect with the craftsmanship, references and storytelling behind the designs themselves. The exhibition is free to visit and runs daily at Place Vendôme, making it an easy cultural stop if you're already planning a mall afternoon anyway. ✤

After the success of its first edition, the Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final returns this December with races, community runs and three days of waterfront action.
December may still feel far away right now, but after months of cancelled events, postponed concerts and quieter weekends around Doha, we’re taking any excuse to get excited about the city’s outdoor social calendar again.
And good news: one of Lusail’s biggest sports weekends is officially making a comeback. The Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final will return from December 10 to 12, following the success of its first edition last year.
The championship is the final stop of the international T100 Triathlon World Tour, which takes place across different cities worldwide before ending in Qatar at the close of the season. Professional triathletes from around the world will head to Lusail for the final race of the year, taking on the competition’s signature T100 format: a 2km swim in the Arabian Gulf, an 80km cycling route through Lusail and an 18km run finishing around Lusail Plaza and Boulevard.
The good thing is, this isn't one of those events where only professional athletes get to join the fun. Alongside the elite championship, organisers are also planning an Open T100 race, a Sprint Triathlon, the T100 Age Group World Championships and community runs over 1km and 5km, meaning casual runners and amateur athletes can take part too, which feels very on-brand for Doha right now.
Over the past few years, the city’s fitness and wellness scene has grown massively, especially during the cooler months, with running clubs, cycling groups and outdoor workout communities becoming part of everyday life. By winter, places like Lusail Boulevard, Mina District and the Corniche are full of people training before sunrise or
meeting friends after work for evening runs.
The event is expected to bring together professional athletes, amateur competitors and community participants across the three-day programme, with activities aimed at both serious racers and casual visitors. Alongside the sporting events, the championship village will include food experiences, wellness activations, entertainment areas and family-friendly activities spread across the Lusail waterfront, turning the event into something closer to a city-wide outdoor festival than simply a sports competition. Even if a full triathlon sounds slightly terrifying, the shorter community races make this feel far more accessible than people might expect. Whether you are someone who runs every weekend or someone who has been saying ‘I should probably sign up for something’ for the past two years, this is very much the kind of event designed to pull people in.
The championship weekend is also part of Qatar’s growing push towards sports tourism and large-scale outdoor events, especially during the winter season when the city’s social calendar shifts outside again.
Over the past few years, Lusail in particular has become one of Doha’s main destinations for major sporting events, from the Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final and QOC Half Marathon to Formula 1 weekends. ✤

BLACK RABBIT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE OBVIOUS
DUELLING PIANOS LITTLE OF CHAOS LATE NIGHT CONVERSATIONS AND NIGHTS THAT SHOULD PROBABLY KEEP IN SECRET
Too hot to function? When Doha summer starts feeling relentless, the city’s indoor scene suddenly becomes the only place anyone wants to be. Luckily, there’s far more to it than simply hiding in the nearest mall.

Summer is about to arrive in Qatar, which means stepping outside will soon feel less like a casual activity and more like a bold personal decision. The pavements radiate heat, the car feels like an oven within seconds and even quick errands suddenly require mental preparation. But while the temperatures keep climbing, so does Doha’s ability to turn indoor living into an actual lifestyle. Fortunately, the city has mastered the art of
summer survival. From immersive attractions and ice-cold escapes to cultural exhibitions, gaming hubs and unexpectedly fun indoor experiences, there’s plenty happening beyond the blast of mall air-conditioning. Whether you’re trying to entertain the kids, escape weekend boredom, plan an easy evening or simply avoid melting entirely, consider this your guide to getting through summer in Doha without hiding at home for the next few months.

If your children have endless energy and your air-conditioning bill is already emotionally draining, Doha Quest may be your answer. The massive indoor theme park packs more than 30 rides and attractions into one fully climate-controlled space, making it one of Doha’s most reliable summer escapes for families. The atmosphere leans heavily into immersive entertainment, with colourful themed zones, high-speed rides and interactive attractions designed around a past-present-future concept. Thrillseekers can head for record-breaking rides like the EpiQ Coaster and Magma Blast, while younger children have dedicated play areas and gentler attractions. What parents will appreciate most is the practicality: no melting in queues under the sun, no humidityinduced regret and no complicated planning required. You can easily spend several hours here without hearing the dreaded ‘I’m bored’ once. Which, during a Qatar summer, is arguably priceless. GO: Call 4410 3444 for more information.

Need a break from Doha’s usual summer formula of malls, coffee shops and cold air-conditioning? Al Thuraya Planetarium at Katara offers something a little different, namely, an excuse to spend an afternoon drifting through outer space without leaving the city. Inside the enormous dome theatre, visitors are immersed in full-sky astronomy shows, 3D films and visual journeys through planets, galaxies and deep space projections that feel far more cinematic than classroom-like. The experience is designed to be accessible to all ages, meaning children stay entertained while adults become just as invested in whether they’d survive a mission to Mars. The wider space also includes interactive exhibits and educational displays exploring astronomy, navigation and humanity’s long-standing fascination with the stars. But what really makes it work during summer is the atmosphere: dark, cool, calm and blissfully removed from the outside heat, ideal for families, curious minds or anyone craving an indoor activity.
GO: Call 4408 2067 for more information.

When Doha summer starts feeling endless, a cat café may be exactly the kind of wholesome chaos your week needs. Hidden away in Porto Arabia at The Pearl, Fat Cat Café combines coffee, desserts and an entire lounge filled with cats roaming freely around the space. Yes, it’s exactly as adorable as it sounds. The concept is simple: book a session, grab a drink and spend time with the resident cats in a calm indoor setting designed more around relaxation than full-on entertainment. Unlike noisy arcades or packed play zones, the atmosphere here is cosy and quiet, and unexpectedly calming, especially if you’re the type of person who immediately abandons conversations to pet animals. For adults, families with older children or basically anyone missing pets from back home, it’s one of Doha’s more charming indoor escapes.
GO: Call 7449 4498 for more information.

If the thought of stepping outside during summer already feels exhausting, Villaggio Mall is basically a hot-weather survival plan in mall form. Beyond the faux-Venetian canals and designer shopping, the real fun starts inside Gondolania Theme Park, the sprawling indoor entertainment complex tucked inside the mall. Expect an Olympic-sized ice rink, go-karts, bowling, roller coasters and even gondola rides drifting beneath an artificial sky. Yes, it’s gloriously over the top, and that’s exactly the appeal. The ice rink becomes especially tempting during peak summer heat, offering a surprisingly refreshing escape for both adults and children. Whether you’re gliding confidently across the ice or clinging to the side rails for balance, it’s hard not to have fun. The best part? You can easily turn the entire visit into a full day indoors without ever stepping back into the heat. Coffee, lunch, skating, arcade games, repeat.
GO: Call 4403 9800 for more information.

The Pearl hotspot is already known for its lively atmosphere, colourful interiors and crowd-pleasing Mexican menu, making it the kind of place where one round of tacos and mocktails somehow turns into an entire evening. But the real surprise is hidden behind a secret door inside the restaurant. Literally. Tucked away from the main dining space is a private karaoke room that feels like Doha’s answer to a hidden house party. Inside, you’ll find a cosy setup for up to 12 people, where all that’s left to do is order drinks and bites, queue up your favourite songs and fully commit to the performance. The privacy definitely helps, especially once somebody decides the night now requires a dramatic rendition of a 2000s’ power ballad. For birthdays, girls’ nights or simply breaking up the usual dinner routine, it’s exactly the kind of chaotic-fun indoor activity that works perfectly during summer.
GO: Call 4409 5285 for more information.

Who knew one of Doha’s coolest indoor escapes would be hidden inside a working port? Located in Umm Al Houl, the Hamad Port Visitors Centre is part aquarium, part maritime museum and part surprisingly entertaining deep dive into Qatar’s relationship with the sea. And yes, it’s genuinely worth the drive. The standout attraction is the oceanic aquarium, featuring 17 different tanks filled with thousands of marine creatures and 80 species from regional waters and beyond. There’s also an underwater-style tunnel, jellyfish displays and interactive areas that keep children fully occupied while adults become just as fascinated. Beyond the aquarium, the centre includes a maritime museum, 4D cinema, simulators and family-friendly exhibits explaining how Hamad Port operates and why it matters to Qatar.
GO: Call 4045 3005 for more information.

The Museum of Illusions Doha proves that museums don’t always need whispered voices and serious expressions to keep people entertained. Located inside The Gate Mall in West Bay, the interactive attraction is built entirely around optical illusions, sensory tricks and mind-bending installations that constantly make you question what you’re looking at. One minute you’re walking through a spinning vortex tunnel trying not to lose your balance, the next you’re attempting to figure out how someone suddenly looks tiny inside the Ames Room. The experience leans heavily into participation rather than passive viewing, with illusion rooms, holograms and interactive exhibits designed to be photographed, tested and puzzled over rather than simply observed. It genuinely appeals across age groups without feeling too child-focussed or overly educational. Kids love the visual chaos, adults inevitably become competitive about taking the best illusion photos, and everyone leaves slightly suspicious of their own eyesight. GO: Call 4020 6273 for more information.

If your idea of an indoor summer activity involves more than simply surviving the heat, Mathaf’s latest exhibition Resolutions: Evolving Realities, deserves a spot on the list. Running as part of the museum’s 15th anniversary programme, the exhibition revisits landmark works that helped shape Mathaf’s identity when it first opened in 2010, but through a distinctly contemporary lens. Spread across the museum’s atrium and galleries, the exhibition brings together multimedia works by 10 intergenerational artists and collectives exploring personal, cultural and sociopolitical realities across the region. Expect large-scale installations, video works and sculptures that reward a slower wander rather than a quick walkthrough. One of the major highlights is the first public presentation of a monumental sculptural work by Iraqi artist Ismail Fattah, originally created during Mathaf’s early residency programme. Ideal for adults, older children and anyone craving an air-conditioned cultural reset between coffee runs and mall marathons.
GO: Call 4402 8855 for more information.

If your summer wellness routine needs a little motivation beyond another gym session, Old Doha Port may have found the answer. Starting from June 6, the Aquarium at City Gallery at the Terminal will host weekly ladies-only Pilates sessions in collaboration with FIT ISLAND. Exercising beside marine life sounds significantly more appealing than staring at a treadmill wall! Held every Saturday at 10am, the classes will take place inside the aquarium space itself, creating a surprisingly calming atmosphere that leans more towards luxury wellness escape than standard fitness class. Expect slow movement, immersive underwater surroundings and the kind of peaceful energy that makes you briefly forget the outside temperature is nearing 45°C. For women looking to combine fitness, relaxation and a change of scenery this summer, it’s one of Doha’s more unique indoor offerings right now.
GO: Call 5100 0570 for more information.

In a country where fragrance is practically woven into daily life, Doha’s Perfume Museum feels like a very fitting addition to the city’s indoor scene. Located in the heart of The Pearl-Qatar, the museum by Reem Abu Issa takes visitors through the fascinating history of perfume-making with a collection of rare scent artefacts and vintage bottles dating back to the 1800s and 1900s. Far more than a display of pretty bottles, the museum explores how fragrance evolved across cultures and trade routes, including the role of the Silk Road in shaping the global perfume industry. Visitors can also discover the craftsmanship behind perfumery itself, from raw ingredients and distillation techniques to bottle design and luxury branding. Alongside the fragrances, there’s an impressive collection of vintage beauty objects including kohl, compacts, powders and lipsticks, offering a glimpse into the history of cosmetics and personal rituals through the decades. Elegant, immersive and refreshingly different from Doha’s usual summer entertainment circuit, it’s an ideal indoor escape for adults, design lovers and anyone drawn to a little old-world glamour with their air-conditioning.
GO: Call 4468 1187 for more information.

Missing winter? Snow Dunes is probably the closest Doha gets to a full cold-weather escape without leaving the city. Located inside Doha Festival City, the Arabian-themed indoor snow park keeps temperatures at a very un-Qatar-like -5°C, offering a genuinely surreal contrast to the desert heat outside. The park combines classic snow attractions with interiors inspired by traditional Qatari and Arabian design, creating a space that feels more immersive than your average indoor ski attraction. Expect snow slides, winter activities and plenty of opportunities to dramatically overreact to how cold it suddenly feels after spending weeks outdoors in 45-degree heat. Families tend to love it because it works across age groups: younger children can play in the snow while adults enjoy the novelty factor just as much. And, yes, there’s something deeply satisfying about drinking a hot chocolate while knowing the pavement outside is practically melting.
GO: CALL 4042 0444 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Proudly old-school in the best possible way, Qatar Bowling Center remains one of Doha’s classic indoor hangouts. Long before hyper-digital gaming arenas arrived in the city, this was where families, teenagers and fiercely competitive friend groups came to escape the heat and settle scores over a few rounds of bowling. And the nostalgic charm still seems to work. The centre offers much more than bowling alone, with billiards, snooker, table tennis and other indoor games keeping everyone occupied between turns. It’s refreshingly uncomplicated: no elaborate concept, no immersive storytelling, just straightforward fun that works for all ages. There’s something oddly comforting about the familiar sound of bowling pins crashing while the outside temperature edges towards unbearable. For parents, it’s an easy win during the holidays. For adults, it’s also surprisingly fun as a casual evening activity that doesn’t require much planning.
GO: Call 3336 2722 for more information.

At Subzero Café, the gimmick is very much part of the appeal, and in the middle of a Qatar summer, nobody seems to mind. The ice-themed café invites guests into a chilled indoor space filled with icy interiors and winter-inspired décor that feels worlds away from the heat outside. It’s not just somewhere to grab coffee; the experience leans heavily into novelty and escapism. The contrast is what makes it fun: one minute you’re walking through Doha humidity, the next you’re bundled up indoors pretending you’ve somehow wandered into the Arctic. Dramatic? Absolutely. Fun? Also, yes. It works particularly well as a quick stop during a mall day or as part of a wider indoor itinerary during the summer months. GO: Call 4017 0422 for more information.

At Virtuocity inside Doha Festival City, summer boredom doesn’t really stand a chance. The enormous gaming and esports hub feels less like a traditional arcade and more like stepping into a futuristic playground designed for both serious gamers and curious first-timers. Think VR experiences, racing simulators, escape rooms and rows of high-tech gaming stations that can easily swallow an entire afternoon without anyone noticing. What makes Virtuocity work particularly well is that it caters to mixed-age groups surprisingly easily. Teenagers can disappear into esports tournaments while younger kids get stuck into interactive games and VR attractions. Meanwhile, adults inevitably end up joining in ‘just for one round’ before becoming far too competitive. Even if you’re not especially into gaming, the scale and atmosphere alone make it worth experiencing at least once. GO: Call 4042 0444 for more information.

Life’s a beach, or so they say, and with high summer right around the corner, we’re just about still in that sweet spot when we can enjoy everything Qatar’s numerous beaches have to offer before the temperatures drive us all into air-conditioned comfort again until October. From off-the-beaten track options to a hidden city centre freebie and a stargazing hot-spot, we’ve rounded up some of our favourites. So, grab your bucket and spade, slap on the factor ‘duffel coat’ and head on out.

Al Wakrah Beach
You’ll be spoilt for choice at this one, a destination that has it all – the serenity of an out-of-town escape coupled with excellent facilities from umbrellas and restrooms to kids’ playgrounds, all just a 30km drive from the centre of town on the Ras Abu Abboud Expressway. For a trip that feels like a real getaway, head out of Doha and about 90km north-east of the city you’ll find Azerbaijani Beach (also known as Jassassiyah Beach), which is one of the country’s most popular and still unspoilt spots. Famed for its soft sands and crystal-clear waters, the beach doesn’t allow boats or Jet Skis, so it’s the ideal hangout for a quiet, calm coastal day. Entry’s free and there are no facilities to speak of, so you’ll need to bring food, towels, shade etc, but it’s a great getaway. One of a few remaining wild areas – leave no trace, make sure you take your trash home.

If you’re looking for something on the fancier side, Doha Beach Club’s got you covered. In the words of Visit Qatar, it’s ‘the kind of place that makes you think, this is why I came to Qatar. It’s more than just a beach – it’s a destination designed to make every moment shine’.
Here, it’s all about soft, golden sands and calm, clear seas coupled with a family-friendly atmosphere and activities such as a gym, sports courts, volleyball, a street food district and hookah terraces. Entry is QR80 during the week and QR100 at weekends and it’s free after 6pm – though swimming stops at 5pm. It’s also next to Doha Sands, which is exclusively for hotel membership guests.

Found in West Bay, this spot is one of the city’s few free public beaches. This means there are no regular amenities, so you’ll need to bring everything with you, from shade to food etc. But you can still experience Qatar’s gorgeous clear waters here and there’s plenty going on nearby, particularly at neighbouring West Bay.
GO: Find it between the Sheraton and the Four Seasons.

About an hour-and-a-half out of Doha, along Qatar’s northeast coast, Fuwairit Beach is known for its soft white sand and shallow, crystal-clear waters. It’s still pretty wild and is the ideal spot for nature lovers with turtle-watching during the season. Enjoy sunbathing or kitesurfing and, if you fancy an overnight stay, this location is also home to the purpose-built Fuwairit Kite Beach, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, which offers world-class kitesurfing, water sports and beachfront leisure facilities, making it a key destination for active coastal experiences.

Where towering sand dunes meet the waters of the Arabian Gulf, the Inland Sea, or Khor Al Adaid, is pretty special and unique in Qatar. A UNESCO-listed natural reserve, it’s a lagoon within a rare landscape whose clear, calm waters make it ideal for spotting marine wildlife. Aside from swimming and sun worshipping, dune bashing here is great fun and you can pitch a tent and camp under the stars. It’s free to visit, however, you’ll need an experienced driver and 4x4 vehicle to get there or take an organised desert safari.

One of the city’s most affordable public beaches with entry at just QR10 for adults, Katara Beach has a lot going on. Being in the heart of Doha and right in front of Katara Cultural Village, it offers easy access to dining and various attractions as well as handicraft stalls along part of the 1.5km sandy stretch. It’s also one of the most popular spots for water activities, from parasailing to wakeboarding and banana boating, and extremely family friendly. Be aware, swimwear needs to be modest and swimming is strictly prohibited after sunset, though the beaches are open throughout the evening.

Set along Diplomatic Street, Nami is Qatar’s newest beach experience, perfect for a few hours of sun and sand without the full road trip. There’s sand, yes, but also an infinity pool, cabanas, greenery and a women-only section.
The vibe is definitely relaxed. No alcohol, no jet skis and no outside food, but there’s plenty on-site. It’s the ideal in-town getaway either by yourself or with family or friends. Open daily from 8.30am to 7pm, entry from QR85 (weekdays) and QR125 (weekends). GO: Visit @namibeachdoha and @namiladies for more information.
This is probably Qatar’s favourite beach and it’s easy to see why. Not just central, it has ramps so those with disabilities can access the water and is also one of the city’s only dog-friendly beaches, so your four-legged friend can come too (but not in the heat of the day please). With a good range of beachside food trucks, kids’ playgrounds and sporting courts, West Bay really does have it all. And, even better, as Ocean Guardians, West Bay’s management collect plastic left on the beach and send it off for recycling. Open from 8am to 11pm (weekdays) and 8am to 1am (weekends) entry is QR30 and kids under 12 go free.
GO: Visit @westbaybeach for more information.
If dramatic rock formations and remoteness are your thing, then Zekreet (also known as Ras Abrouq Beach), on Qatar’s west coast, is the place for you. Popular for camping, some of the region’s best darksky star gazing and windsurfing, it offers a secluded, off-the-grid coastal experience surrounded by nature and wildlife. Why not make a longer break of it and visit Zekreet Fort, Film City and Richard Serra’s East-West/West-East art installation while you’re in the area. The sea here is shallow and rocky, so bring water shoes if you plan on going in and, remember, this area is still wild, so you’ll need to bring everything with you or book a guided tour.

China’s top car makers spotlighted their latest models and future technologies at an exhibition determined to establish the country’s ability to compete on the international stage.

With Chinese car brands currently holding a significant 15-20% market share across the GCC, a figure that’s expected to exceed 30% by the end of the decade, the latest automotive news out of Beijing is always eagerly anticipated.
From intelligent driving to ultrafast charging and other cuttingedge technologies in areas such as batteries and electric vehicles, analysts say Beijing Auto Show 2026 illustrated an industry that’s setting the global pace.
Held under the name and theme ‘Driving the Era, Smart Future,’ more than 1,450 vehicles were on display at this year’s show, including 181 global debuts and 71 concept cars. The event, for the first time split over two venues totalling a record-breaking 380,000sq/m, attracted 1.28 million visitors, including 65,000 from overseas, and personnel from more than 70 embassies and consulates. Participants included automakers, suppliers and technology firms from 21 countries and regions, spanning vehicle development, core components and intelligent systems.
Upwards of 50 industry summits, seminars, industry exchanges and targeted procurement matchmaking events were held concurrently with the exhibition, building a threedimensional industrial ecosystem of ‘exhibition, conference, matchmaking and exchange’.
Intelligent connected new energy vehicles have become an important engine for China’s development of new-quality productivity and a core track for global industrial competition. This year's exhibition showcased the latest achievements and trends in the integrated development of electrification, intelligentisation (embedding artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced data analytics into existing systems) and connectivity. It included cutting-edge technologies such as the integration of

AI large-scale models into vehicles and the commercialisation of Level 3 autonomous driving, marking the automotive industry's official entry into a new era of intelligent mobility and initiating a fundamental transformation from ‘transportation tools’ to ‘intelligent mobile terminals’ and ‘mobile living spaces’.
Several companies showcased next-generation power batteries with energy densities exceeding 400Wh/kg and ranges exceeding 1,500km; technologies such as nine-minute flash charging and ultra-fast charging at -30°C were also demonstrated. And with multiple technological routes such as pure electric and range-extended electric vehicles proceeding in parallel, several mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were unveiled with improvements in fuel cell performance and reduced refuelling time.
Tu Le, managing director of consultancy Sino Auto Insights, said the auto show demonstrates the “speed and aggressiveness of advancement” among Chinese automakers, adding: “It just reinforces that the Chinese – whether in EVs, batteries, intelligent driving – are setting the pace for all these important sectors.”
In recent years, China has become the world’s biggest car exporter and advisory group Omdia forecasts that passenger vehicle exports will grow by around 14% year-on-year in 2026.
Meanwhile, given the growing demand and often better profitability in overseas markets, Chinese automakers have been shifting from exporting cars from China to building more factories overseas, including in Hungary and Turkey, to increase supplies abroad and avert trade friction.
Chinese carmakers are likely to almost triple their overseas production by 2030 to 3.4 million vehicles from 1.2 million last year, according to AlixPartners estimates.

A day with the Maserati Grecale Modena revealed how high-performance and refined comfort can come together seamlessly.

With Maserati, elegance is a given – but the Grecale Modena brings it into everyday life. It moves beyond heritage, with a sense of relevance that feels immediate.
During our time with it, the Grecale proved itself to be more than just another addition to the luxury SUV segment. Maserati describes it as ‘the everyday exceptional’, and from the outset, that balance between refinement and performance was clear. It carried the elegance expected of the Trident, yet there was an underlying sense of purpose – suggesting this wasn’t simply about getting from one place to another. It was about how you felt along the way.
The Grecale Modena’s design is unmistakably Maserati, but with a freshness that feels entirely modern. The front is dominated by a low, assertive grille – bold without feeling excessive – flanked by sleek LED headlamps inspired by the MC20 super sports car, giving it an immediate sense of purpose. It’s the kind of design that doesn’t feel finished at first glance – you keep noticing more. From the side, the proportions strike a careful balance between fluidity and structure. The body flows in soft, sculpted lines, contrasted by more technical elements that subtly highlight its performance character. The signature triple side air vents remain, now paired with the Modena badge – a small detail we appreciated for the way it carries decades of legacy.
At the rear, boomerang-shaped taillights – inspired by the 3200 GT – add a distinctive finish, while the wider rear track enhances its stance. Gloss black detailing and 20-inch alloy wheels complete the look.
It’s a design that stayed in mind, long after we’d left it behind.
Step inside, and the Grecale Modena feels as considered visually as it does to the touch. The cabin is clean, modern and thoughtfully arranged – less about overwhelming you with features and more about creating a space you settle into naturally. The design takes inspiration from architecture, and it shows. Lines are simple and deliberate, allowing the materials to take centre stage. An embroidered graphic motif flows across the dashboard, doors and seats, while open-pore dark ash wood introduces a contemporary edge.
Everything feels considered. Surfaces are finished in premium materials, and the cohesion stood out quickly, with nothing feeling out of place.
Ambient lighting casts a soft glow after dark, giving the cabin a subtle ‘living room’ quality. It’s refined, comfortable and unmistakably Maserati – a cabin that feels special every time you’re in it.
Technology in the Grecale quickly stood out as a central part of the experience, brought together in a way that felt genuinely impressive.
The cabin features a fully digital ecosystem, including a 12.3inch instrument cluster, a central 12.3-inch touchscreen and an additional 8.8-inch comfort display, along with a distinctive digital clock. Together, they create a layered setup that feels intuitive.

At the centre is the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA), delivering fast, responsive performance. Navigation, media and vehicle settings were easily accessible, while personalised profiles allow the car to adapt quickly.
Voice control added another layer of ease, while dual smartphone connectivity kept things seamless. Maserati Connect enables remote access, while an onboard wi-fi hotspot keeps everything connected.
The Sonus faber sound system delivered a rich, immersive listening experience – it didn’t stay at a sensible volume for very long.
Under the bonnet, the Grecale Modena is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mild hybrid engine producing 330hp and 450Nm of torque.
On the road, those numbers quickly came to life. Acceleration from 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds felt immediate, but more importantly, smooth – a controlled surge that built quickly. There was no hesitation, no searching for power – just a clean push forward that felt effortlessly controlled.
The mild hybrid system, supported by a 48V setup and an e-Booster, ensures consistent responsiveness. The power

It blends performance, design and technology into something cohesive and easy to live with.” “
delivery remained composed.
Switching into Sport mode sharpened everything just enough to remind us what the Grecale is capable of. Throttle response became more alert, and the overall drive took on a more energetic edge – without ever feeling unsettled. What stood out most was how usable the performance felt. It wasn’t about chasing numbers, but about how naturally the car responded – something that became more rewarding the longer we spent with it.
The Grecale’s intelligence extended beyond performance, with Level 2 driver assistance systems supporting us without ever feeling overbearing.
Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Driving Assist and Lane Management worked seamlessly, particularly on longer stretches. Traffic Sign Recognition and Intelligent Speed Assist added awareness without becoming distracting. When manoeuvring required more precision, the parking sensors, rearview camera and optional surround view helped the Grecale feel easier to place than its proportions suggest. Overall, the systems felt seamlessly integrated – supporting the drive with a level of precision that felt entirely in step with the Grecale’s character.
By the end of our time with the Maserati Grecale Modena, one thing was clear: this is a car that understands modern luxury. It blends performance, design and technology into something cohesive and easy to live with. It’s as comfortable on a daily commute as it is on a longer drive – yet always carries that underlying sense of a sports car, expressed through the form of an SUV. It’s a car that fits into everyday life – but never lets you forget what it is. ✤

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé promises extreme power, enormous continuous performance, highly precise driving dynamics and a thrilling AMG intensive driving experience.
The four-door coupé is based on the high-performance AMG.EA architecture and boasts a newly developed drive concept, strictly designed for high performance.
For the first time in an all-electric series production vehicle, three highly innovative axial-flux electric motors are utilised, two on the rear axle and one at the front. Together, they unleash a system output of up to 1,169hp. This is complemented by a high-performance battery concept that guarantees repeatedly available power. The sprint from 0-100km/h is achieved in just 2.1 seconds, with 200km/h in 6.4 seconds. The top speed is 300km/h (with optional Driver’s Package).
Thanks to a charging capacity of 600kW, over 460 kilometres of range can be recharged in just 10 minutes, and typical charging to 80% takes just 11 minutes.
To optimally transfer the untamed power to the road, the aerodynamics adapt lightning-fast to every driving situation thanks to several innovative new developments including two active AEROKINETICS venturi flow plates in the underbody and the active AEROKINETICS rear diffuser.
The high-voltage battery is a completely new development and the result of concentrated expertise. It combines experience from the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar, the uncompromising performance philosophy of Formula 1, and the deep know-how of Mercedes-AMG’s top engineers.
The seven AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programmes — Comfort, Sport, AMGFORCE Sport+, RACE, Slippery, Individual and for the first time at Mercedes-AMG, also Eco – enable a wide spread of vehicle characteristics.
The body-in-white is a completely new development. The intelligent material mix of aluminium, steel and fibre-reinforced composites combines the typically high AMG rigidity with low weight.
The sound from the GT R serves as the basis for a multi-sensory overall experience, tailored to the respective driving situation and the sound world extends beyond pure driving operation with additional audio signatures such as heartbeat-like pulses on entering the vehicle.
The silhouette of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door-Coupé is shaped by its dynamic fastback, the long, low-slung front, the steeply raked windshield and the distinctive rear diffuser.
The AMG specific grille with its vertical slats is offered for the first time optionally illuminated and in a further developed, concave shape. The likewise illuminated, centrally positioned Mercedes star and the headlights with star-shaped daytime running lights create a unique light signature.
Six circular taillights in turbine design with star graphics lend the sports car an unmistakable rear identity.
The wheel portfolio available to customers ranges from 19- to 21inch light-alloy and forged wheels, including aerodynamically

optimised designs.
The high-performance DNA of the new model is reflected in the driver-focussed cockpit. The instrument panel is defined by a wide, visually continuous display unit that separates into a driveroriented area and a slightly offset passenger area. The razor-sharp driver displays – consisting of the 10.2-inch instrument cluster and the 14.0-inch multimedia monitor – merge into a single unit. The centre console features an armrest with a closed storage compartment, as well as two charging trays for fast, inductive smartphone charging.
The newly developed front seats offer excellent lateral support during dynamic cornering. Even sportier are the optional AMG Performance seats with integrated head restraints.
The one-piece panorama glass roof contributes to the airy sense of space – a window to the sky. At night, the roof can optionally transform into a sparkling canvas with a unique light staging. Sophisticated ambient lighting also plays a key role in creating a feel-good atmosphere on board the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door-Coupé.
The control surfaces and the state-of-the-art Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) appear emotional and intuitive to use, the foundation being the company’s new Mercedes Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This software-to-cloud architecture intelligently networks and controls all control units and functions with various display styles available.
The new generation of MBUX also integrates artificial intelligence from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini. By combining multiple AI agents in one system, MBUX revolutionises how occupants interact with the vehicle. ✤
The newly revealed Vision BMW ALPINA is a design study that heralds a new era for a brand defined by extreme capability, sophistication and the mastery of both performance and comfort.

Presented at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este as a one-off design study, the Vision BMW ALPINA is a respectful interpretation of the brand’s heritage, shaped by the most contemporary creative instincts. At 5,200mm in length, its presence is substantial: wide, low and confident. The coupé roofline is long and raked, its form immediately signals both speed and the ability to accommodate four adults in genuine comfort.
A V8 powertrain drives the experience, tuned to produce the characteristic notes of the Alpina exhaust: rich and deep at low speed, sonorous at high revs.
The front end is defined by powerful volumes. The shark nose – a signature that traces back to the Alpina B7 – reinterprets BMW’s kidney grille as a three-dimensional sculpture that leads the car’s form. From the nose, the exterior is organised around a single visual axis: the speed feature line. Rising from the lower front corners at a six-degree inclination, it runs along the side of the body and wraps around the rear.
The modernised deco-lines are distilled and painted on the side of the body beneath the clear coat. A warm white tone characterises the daytime running lights and traces the kidney surrounds. Clear-cut illuminated crystals add a precise highlight within the slender lamps.
The elliptical four-pipe exhaust remains, as does the ALPINA lettering – reinterpreted as a machined, polished metal element on the lower front apron. The 22-inch front and 23-inch rear wheels feature the 20-spoke design that has been a constant at Alpina since 1971.
The cabin is generous in space, material quality and the care with which technology has been integrated. The six-degree speed feature line continues through the interior, dividing the darker upper segment and the lighter lower segment. Full-grain leather – sourced from producers across the Alpine region – pairs with stitching inspired by the Deco-lines.

Craft details are restrained but well considered: a bridge stitch inspired by historic steering wheel hand-stitching appears sparingly in heritage blue and green colours, while a watchmaking-inspired bevelling technique was used for the metal components, combining satin and polished finishes. Clearcut crystal is reserved for the controls.
Behind the rear console, a glass water bottle sits beside BMW ALPINA crystal glasses that rise on a self-deploying mechanism. The Vision BMW ALPINA offers Comfort+, a setting beyond the standard BMW comfort calibration that delivers a more subtle, refined character.
BMW Panoramic iDrive, including the new passenger screen, spans the dashboard with a digital UI language crafted specifically for BMW ALPINA.
The Alpina story began in 1965 in Buchloe, Germany, a small Bavarian town in the shadow of the Alps. Burkard Bovensiepen –destined for a career in typewriter manufacturing – chose instead high-performance tuning, founding Alpina and then refining BMW road and racing cars. From the outset, his philosophy was clear: speed and comfort were complementary, not competing ambitions. The Alpina B7 coupé of the late 1970s marked a turning point: Alpina’s philosophy was applied to a luxury car, and every model that followed was recognised as luxurious. Based on the BMW E24 6 Series, its long bonnet, wide stance and shark nose looked fast even at rest, while the cabin could comfortably carry four people across a continent. The Vision BMW ALPINA is the next chapter of that story.
Next year, customers will be able to experience the first model of the BMW ALPINA brand – inspired by the BMW 7 Series, but unmistakably BMW ALPINA. ✤ GO: VISIT BMWALPINA.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Calling all you rockers, here’s your chance to own a little piece of music history.

The world’s first commercially successful bass guitar, the Fender Precision Bass, is turning 75 and it’s a cause for celebration. Much beloved by bands such as Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Guns N’ Roses and Foo Fighters, the P-Bass, as it’s known, has been an industry standard for three quarters of a century, thanks to the quality and reliability of its raw, heavy sound.
The instrument was created when Leo Fender took the regular bass off its endpin, shrunk the scale and added frets to produce a guitar that anyone can learn, popular for its playability, simplicity and versatility.
Now to mark its milestone anniversary, the brand has come up with a trio of special edition precision basses that capture the history and story of a musical legend – including the 75th Anniversary American Vintage II 1951 Precision Bass.
Boasting Fender’s renowned craftsmanship alongside highperformance parts, they are things of beauty as well as fully functional. But don’t forget they’re special editions, so they probably won’t be available for very long and demand is likely to be high. ✤

The General Manager at Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Doha, shares his take on the true meaning of luxury, building unforgettable experiences and maintaining work-life balance.

Al Messila is part of the Luxury Collection. How would you define luxury both in hospitality terms and what you personally consider true luxury?
The Luxury Collection is about creating exceptional, customerfirst experiences for global travellers in some of the world’s most iconic destinations. Tucked away the heart of the city, Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa evolved in 2018 from a former palace built on a farm into a unique retreat featuring private pool villas, suites, hotel rooms and the largest ladies’ spa in Qatar. For me, true luxury is not only about beautiful surroundings or refined service — it is about creating a feeling that stays with
guests long after they leave. For local guests, it’s about a sense of belonging and familiarity; for international travellers, it’s about discovering an authentic yet elevated resort experience that reflects the culture and spirit of the destination.
You’ve spent much of your career within Marriott International. What is it about the company ethos that commands such loyalty? What has kept me with Marriott International throughout my career is the strong people-focussed culture and the opportunities for continuous growth and development. The company encourages individuals to evolve, take on new challenges and bring their own

leadership style and creativity into the business.
I also value the importance placed on integrity, consistency and genuine hospitality. In an industry that is constantly evolving, there is a strong balance between respecting tradition and embracing innovation to meet changing guest expectations.
Most importantly, there is a real understanding that hospitality is ultimately about people — both guests and associates. Creating a supportive environment for teams naturally translates into better experiences for guests, and I believe that mindset is one of the key reasons many people build long and fulfilling careers within the company.
Having started out in events and F&B (food and beverage), is this an area that’s still close to your heart and do you still have time to get involved in this side of the business?
Absolutely — food and beverage and events remain very close to my heart. My background in these areas has given me a deep appreciation for how memorable dining and curated experiences can truly define a guest’s stay.
At Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, our collective aim is to create unforgettable experiences, and I continue to work closely with the team to encourage creativity while ensuring everything remains aligned with the authentic identity of The Luxury Collection brand. We constantly challenge ourselves to elevate our offerings and position the resort as a true destination within the market.
From the moment guests check in to the time they depart, every touchpoint should feel seamless and meaningful — whether they are dining at our restaurants (Deli Kitchen, Taj Rasoi or Parisa), enjoying the tranquility of our lush oasis or embracing the wellness experiences across the resort. We want every guest to leave feeling as though they have experienced a complete luxury and wellness retreat.
You list civil rights, social action and the environment as causes of interest – how do you think these things can be addressed within the context of the luxury hospitality sector?
I believe the luxury hospitality sector has a unique responsibility and opportunity to create meaningful impact — both socially and environmentally. At Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, we are actively positioning the resort as a holistic wellness destination, focussed on transforming guest expectations through a complete 360-degree wellness experience.
Sustainability and well-being go hand in hand. Our team takes great pride in maintaining more than 140,000sq/m of greenery with over 20 types of trees, creating a true oasis in the desert that also supports local birdlife and biodiversity. With experiences such as our two-kilometre running track and personalised wellness journeys, we aim to promote both personal wellbeing and a stronger connection with nature.
On a more personal note, hospitality is notoriously tough on personal/family life with long and antisocial hours. How do you maintain a work-life balance and encourage your teams to do the same?
Hospitality is certainly a demanding industry, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is something I take very seriously — both personally and for my team. I believe balance starts with creating a positive and supportive work culture where people feel respected, motivated and empowered.
For me personally, wellness, family time and moments of reflection are essential in staying energised and focussed. As a leader, I encourage my teams to prioritise their well-being, take time to recharge, and maintain balance wherever possible. Open communication, teamwork and recognising achievements also play an important role in creating a healthy working environment. ✤
Stefano Terrenghi, Executive Chef at Lucia’s Doha, tells of uncompromising standards and collaborative innovation.

What’s your earliest kitchen memory and did it actually influence your decision to become a chef, or did that come later?
There are so many early memories that it is difficult to choose just one, but I have always been surrounded by the hospitality industry. Pesaro, the city that welcomed me, lives through tourism and people coming from all over the world. I spent many of my teenage years in hotels with my father, experiencing that unique environment first-hand.
The atmosphere, the passion and the stories behind every chef I met during that time subconsciously guided me toward choosing to study at the hotelier school in my city. Since then, I have never stopped, and I have never had a single doubt that this was the right path for me.
You left Italy in 2013. What part of your Italian identity do you refuse to compromise on in your kitchen?
I left Italy in September 2013, with the first early autumn breeze and a suitcase full of dreams, not knowing what the future would bring. It was the beginning of a journey that allowed me to grow both personally and professionally around the world. When it comes to my Italian identity, there are certain things I will never compromise on. First of all, the heritage behind our recipes and dishes that have their own history, tradition and regional culture. I believe these classics deserve respect and should never lose their authenticity.
The second is the quality and integrity of ingredients that make Italian cuisine recognised and loved worldwide. Simplicity is at the heart of Italian cooking, so when ingredients are honest and excellent, they should speak for themselves. That balance between tradition and quality is something I always protect in my kitchen.
Between Kuwait, Denmark and Qatar, which place changed your cooking the most and what exactly did that entail?
Definitely Kuwait. It was my first overseas experience. When I arrived in 2013, everything felt new and unfamiliar. I was initially confused
because the environment was so different from what I knew in Italy. The perception of Italian cuisine, the sourcing of ingredients and the availability of products were all completely different. Some ingredients I was used to simply were not available at all.
Even preparing what seemed like a basic dish required deeper thought, adaptation and creativity. That experience probably shaped me more than any other, because it changed the way I look at ingredients. I stopped seeing them only for what they are, and started seeing them as powerful tools that, when understood properly, can help you achieve the final result in different ways. It taught me flexibility, problem solving and how to stay close to the essence of a dish while adapting to a new reality.
What’s your signature dish at Lucia’s or one that represents your overall style?
I don’t believe there is only one signature dish at Lucia's Doha. For me, there is a part of myself and a part of the entire Lucia’s team in every dish we serve.
Our menu is built through collaboration, we brainstorm, share and test ideas, taste continuously and adjust every detail together. Every single person contributes to that process, from the line chefs to the restaurant management team and the owner. That shared effort is what gives each dish its identity.
What has truly shaped Lucia's Doha into what it is today is the combination of all our experiences over the years, like travelling, different cultural backgrounds, personal tastes and guest feedback. Those influences come together to create dishes that feel authentic and memorable, which is why I believe they connect so well with our guests.
For the dish that represents my style, I suggest the Mediterranean seabream, a dish that brings Sorrento lemon to the plate in true Lucia’s style. It reflects the colours of the Italian flag, the freshness of seasonal vegetables and the delicate flavours of the Mediterranean Sea, all ingredients that proudly celebrate our Italian heritage. ✤

For Michele Petrara, cooking started long before professional kitchens, Michelin stars or hotel restaurants entered the picture. Growing up in Italy, food was simply part of everyday life, shaped by time spent with his mother and grandmothers in the kitchen. For him, it was always “something emotional, connected to family”. Turning that connection into an actual profession came later, once he stepped into the reality of restaurant kitchens and realised how different the environment was from cooking at home. “I understood that what I loved could also become my profession and my purpose,” he says. Like many chefs starting out, Chef Michele quickly discovered that professional kitchens leave little room for romantic ideas about food.
What stayed with him most from those early years was the intensity of the environment and the constant pressure to improve. “It was a completely different world from cooking at home. The pace was fast, expectations were high, and there was constant pressure to improve.”
The experience was demanding, but it also shaped the way he still works today. Those years also prepared him for Michelinstarred kitchens, where the pressure only became more intense. While many young chefs dream about working in that world, Michele describes the reality as less about glamour and more about consistency, precision and discipline, where maintaining standards becomes part of daily life.
Over time, that experience also changed the way he approaches food. In his 20s, he admits he was more focussed on technique and complexity, wanting to show everything he could do on a plate. Today, the philosophy is very different, focussed more on simplicity and balance.
“I’ve learned to respect the ingredients more and not overcomplicate dishes. Now, I focus on letting each element speak for itself,” he
says. That balance between simplicity and refinement naturally runs through his cooking style today. Italian cuisine is famously protective of tradition, but Michele prefers reinterpretation over reinvention. “I respect the original recipes, but I like to refine them in a more modern way, whether through presentation or technique, while keeping the authentic flavours intact.”
That approach is especially visible in one of his signature dishes at Il Galante: La mia Parmigiana di Melanzane, his own interpretation of the Italian classic. Rather than changing the identity of the dish completely, he focussed on making it lighter and more refined while preserving its original character. That evolution towards simplicity also shows up in the food he feels most attached to personally. Despite years spent in fine-dining kitchens, the dish that instantly brings him back to childhood is still one of the simplest Italian staples imaginable. “Definitely a simple pasta with tomato sauce. It’s something very traditional, but the flavours and aroma immediately bring me back to the time I spent cooking with my family.”
After years spent learning in demanding kitchens himself, teaching eventually became another important part of his career. Chef Michele spent time in a professional culinary school, something he sees as a way of passing on not only technical skills, but also “discipline, respect and passion for the profession”. Outside work, he keeps things relatively simple. After long hours in professional kitchens, switching off matters just as much as service itself, whether that means spending time with friends, relaxing or exploring new places before returning to the kitchen with fresh energy. And although cooking feels like the obvious path now, he admits that if he hadn’t made a career in the kitchen, he probably would have still ended up doing something creative either way, “maybe working with my hands or in a design-related field”. ✤

Set along the picturesque waterfront of Old Doha Port, Mina Terrace at Mina Hotel and Residences by The Torch offers a refined yet relaxed take on Mediterranean dining, delicately infused with Latin influences. The space unfolded gradually, revealing itself in layers, each turn presenting a new perspective, from softly lit interiors to the gentle pull of the terrace beyond. There was an immediate sense of calm; a cosy yet sophisticated atmosphere that invites you to slow down and settle in.
Warm bohemian tones softened the setting, while a thoughtful blend of textures created a quiet, understated luxury. Woven armchairs layered with soft cushions were arranged around circular marble tables that gently reflected the ambient glow, naturally leading the eye out towards expansive waterfront views. Indoors, a serene coastal palette of sandy beiges and crisp whites enhanced the sense of openness, grounded by earthy details such as bamboo-slatted ceilings and rope-wrapped furnishings. It was a space that felt curated yet effortless, gently drawing you in and setting the tone for the experience ahead, as we prepared to sample the dishes on offer.
Our helpful server, Shahil, talked us confidently through the menu and made a few recommendations of popular dishes to sample. No sooner than we’d sat back to admire the view, and sip our refreshing mocktails, the starters arrived. A beautifully composed spread, each dish distinct yet unified in its celebration of fresh, layered flavours. The Goat Cheese Salad stood out for its vibrant simplicity, with greens, cherry tomatoes and creamy avocado brought together by soft discs of goat’s cheese. A light balsamic vinaigrette added gentle acidity, while pine nuts, caramelised walnuts and shimeji mushrooms introduced both crunch and depth, creating a dish that felt balanced and refined.
The Chef’s Mutabbal offered a more traditional sharing element, presented on a rustic board. Silky smoked aubergine formed the centrepiece, its subtle char adding warmth, while an assortment of hot mezze provided contrast. Crisp cheese sambousek, fragrant spinach fatayer and golden-fried kibbeh delivered a satisfying mix of textures and flavours, each bite complementing the next. The Baked Feta in Clay arrived with understated elegance, softened to a creamy consistency and enriched by sweet tomato confit and thyme. Served with warm sourdough, it offered a comforting balance of salt, sweetness and herbaceous notes. Together, the starters set a confident tone, thoughtfully presented and full of flavour, drawing us seamlessly into the experience.
The mains arrived generously, each dish carefully presented yet effortlessly inviting, filling the table with colour, warmth and a subtle theatrical flair. The Roasted Jamaican Striploin immediately drew attention, served in a rustic dish that held both heat and depth of flavour. Sliced into generous cuts, the Black Angus beef was tender and richly savoury, its juices pooling into a glossy base that spoke of careful roasting. Bright notes came from the pineapple and avocado salsa, adding a gentle sweetness and freshness that lifted the dish, while the chimichurri introduced a

herbaceous sharpness. The combination was well balanced, rich yet vibrant, with each element enhancing the other. Alongside, the Chicken Fajita brought energy and colour to the table. Arriving in a sizzling skillet, the aroma alone was enough to entice. The chicken was juicy and well-seasoned, tossed with peppers and onions that retained a slight bite.
Accompaniments were served separately, allowing us to assemble each portion at the table to our own preferences. Creamy guacamole, cool whipped sour cream and fresh tomato salsa meant every wrap could be tailored, perfect for those who enjoy an extra spoonful of salsa, or smother their wrap with sour cream! Wrapped in the tortilla bread, every mouthful delivered a satisfying contrast of textures, from soft roasted pepper to tender, flavourful meat and of course, the smooth, cooling toppings. Elevated both literally and visually, the Mediterranean Stone Oven Flatbread was presented on a raised stand, giving it a sense of occasion. The base was perfectly baked, lightly crisp at the edges with a soft, airy centre, topped with a rich tomato sauce and a blend of fontina and mozzarella that melted into a creamy layer. Artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes and Kalamata olives added bursts of tang and saltiness, creating a well-balanced flavour profile that felt both indulgent and comforting.
As the sun began to set, our dessert arrived as a gentle, elegant close to the meal, perfectly in keeping with the terrace’s relaxed sophistication. The Torta Tres Leches was beautifully presented, its soft golden sponge generously soaked, giving it a delicate, almost cloud-like texture. Each forkful was luxuriously moist without feeling heavy, the sweetness balanced and refined. A layer of lightly whipped cream sat neatly piped across the top,

adding an airy contrast to the richness beneath, while a subtle drizzle of cream pooled at the base, inviting each bite to be drawn through for added indulgence.
As the afternoon softened, the city slipped into a wash of golden light and Mina Terrace revealed its final charm. The view, serene and unhurried, encouraged a quiet pause, where conversation slowed and the moment itself took centre stage. It was here that the experience truly came together, thoughtful flavours, considered presentation and an atmosphere that felt both elevated and effortless. At Mina Terrace, every detail, from the cuisine to the setting, is carefully composed, leaving behind not just a meal, but a lasting sense of occasion. ✤

Come for the comfort food, stay for the energy. At Mulberry Tavern in Hilton Doha The Pearl, SD finds a Sunday night spot that gets the balance just right: lively, generous and hard to leave.

Tucked inside Hilton Doha The Pearl, Mulberry Tavern is like a book that gets better with every chapter. We don't want to rush ahead and spoil the plot but consider this your first hook. All we ask is that you read until the end.
We're escorted through the indoor seating area to the terrace. Dim lighting, warm woods and leather couches make Mulberry Tavern feel intimate, exclusive and sophisticated. But tonight, we're leaning towards something more animated, and we’re in the mood for a bit of fresh air, so the terrace is exactly where we want to be. We are welcomed by a very friendly manager named Youssef. And we don't highlight this enough, but the staff really set the tone for the evening and Youssef, with his warmth, makes a great impression. We've never met before, but he already feels like a friend.
It's a Sunday night and the al fresco area is basically a sit-down party. Groovy tunes in a beautiful garden, with a lively crowd having a great time, could only mean we chose well.
We start with the signature mocktail, Mulberry Garden, not just because it makes sense given where we’re sitting but also because it has mulberry puree. It's sweet and refreshing.
We notice the plate has ‘always amongst friends’ written on it. What a wonderful thing to read just before we start our meal. Everything about Mulberry Tavern is screaming ‘excellent hangout’ but we'll lock that in after we've dined.
Chefs Luigi and Soso introduce themselves. Something about this introduction tells us the night is going to be unforgettable. Sports lovers, the massive screen on the terrace (and indoors, too) will definitely catch your eye. It's probably a good time to

book your tables for the Champions League final.
Chef Soso arrives with our appetisers. We decide to go with his recommendations. We start with a Burrata Caprese, his signature creation. When we read this on the menu, it sounded disarmingly familiar. What could the chef have done so differently? The first look is enough to loudly declare his culinary mastery. Encased in a tomato jelly, this burrata is disguised as a perfect-looking tomato. Along with pesto and balsamic pearls, there's a tomato marmalade that is so delicious and kind of reminds us of South Africa. We ask the chef where he's from and when he replies with ‘South Africa’, it all adds up. He's put his special touches to this dish and it's a promising showcase for what's to come. We move on to a beautifully presented Duck Pâté with Pickled Pear. What's interesting about this dish is the pâté is made with duck breast, and not liver (thankfully). We enjoy dollops of the smooth paste atop toasted bread, and add some of the mildly acidic yet sweet pickled pear.
The Korean Fried Chicken (which Chef Soso rightly claims to be their best-seller) is the kind of comfort food you need after a long, stressful day at work (or anywhere, really). It's perfectly crunchy and the Gochujang glaze gives it that incredible sweet and spicy kick. Fair warning: stop yourself after a few pieces. Exercise physical restraint if you have to. These fill you up really quickly and there are so many more drool-worthy dishes to try. We did exactly the opposite, of course, and may have gone overboard, finishing the entire plate.
The staff pass by to check on us (we are making loud noises of pleasure) and we ask for a 10-minute break to digest our most recent and glorious fried indulgence. 10 minutes isn’t really enough.
Chef Soso promptly appears with the next courses - a plate of Beef Wellington and Fish and Chips in a wire basket. We’ve asked for the meat to be cooked to medium-rare, expecting the pastry to lock in some heat making it the perfect temperature when served. That's a great tip by the way, because it worked exactly as we expected.
The meat is brilliant: juicy, soft, packed with flavour, with a golden, flaky pastry outside and an earthy Mushroom Duxelle sitting between the tenderloin and the shell. It's wonderfully savoury and we're all praise, thinking the fish course can't possibly beat this.
The Fish and Chips surprise us, pleasantly. Frankly, we've never tasted a version this good in Doha. The softest piece of cod is deep fried in the crispiest batter which is surprisingly not greasy.

Chef Soso clearly knows what he's doing. He also knows how to take his fries to the peak of crispiness, by triple cooking them. The mushy peas and tartar sauce on the side aren’t even needed, but we're not complaining. This dish is far from healthy but right up there with some of the best bar food you'll try in Doha. What an experience. We're almost emotional. A true technical masterpiece. It’s been a while since we've had such a good experience: food, service, ambience, all of it. Youssef even jokes with us, ‘I'm not letting you leave yet’. Our guess is because we're great diners? Nope. It's because the chef has prepared two more mains for us, the Signature Beef Burger and the popular Shepherd's Pie. Where is this going to fit? A question we have been asking ourselves since we devoured every last crumb of that Korean Fried Chicken. We haven't found the answer yet. What we have found is more space to savour this top-notch burger.
Now, we really need a break. A long one. Other than allowing our stuffed stomach pouches to make room for dessert, we also want to enjoy the vibes. The crowd is lively, the music is great and the terrace is buzzing.
A Sticky Toffee Date Pudding with ice cream makes a grand entrance in a cast-iron bowl with a lid. They’re keeping the gold safe. Because this dessert is basically a prize. The warm, gooey, coffee and date pudding with butterscotch pairs perfectly with the vanilla ice cream. There are two of us, so a second dessert is rather obvious. We're all over this Apple Crumble with caramel and cinnamon flavours bringing the dessert to life. The crumble on top is generous and the cold ice cream melts into the warm apple ensuring our sweet ending is one for the books.
On paper, Mulberry Tavern seems like a familiar proposition: a menu featuring comfort foods, an inviting terrace and an experience designed to please Doha's expat crowd. But in reality, it’s so much more. This isn’t about first impressions; it’s about lasting impressions. Mulberry Tavern isn't demanding. It's giving, and all you need to do is show up and be willing to have a good time. With a non-negotiable plate of the Korean Fried Chicken (we really need to stop rambling about this one, but it's just that good!). ✤

Fresh out of a massage at Alara Spa, I was mentally prepared for exactly one activity: lying down. But the promise of Mumble Jungle and its new menu proved unexpectedly convincing and managed to pull me out of that blissfully horizontal state. Hidden on the third floor of Andaz Doha, by Hyatt, Mumble Jungle feels like stepping into someone’s very glamorous tropical fever dream. Low amber lighting, glossy dark wood, dusty pink seating, jungle-level greenery everywhere… Imagine a moody late-night lounge, but with significantly better foliage and much better food. The menu is built around tapas, which suits the whole atmosphere perfectly. Nothing too formal, nothing too serious, just lots of plates arriving slowly while the music gets louder and the drinks keep appearing.
The Shrimp Ceviche was one of the first plates to arrive and instantly confirmed we were off to a strong start. Bright, citrusy and properly fresh, with sweet mango softening the sharpness of the tiger’s milk dressing, while little bursts of tobiko added texture throughout. The Anchovy Brioche quickly became another favourite. Salty anchovies, creamy mayo, toasted brioche, capers and just enough jalapeño heat to keep things interesting. Essentially the sort of dangerously moreish bite you swear you’ll only have one of before accidentally eating six. Even the Jungle Salad, a category of dish I’m not usually emotionally invested in, was surprisingly good. Avocado, kale, pomegranate, charred corn, cranberries and caramelised pecans all brought together with a sharp lemon vinaigrette that kept everything feeling genuinely fresh rather than suspiciously healthy. Which, for a salad, is no small accomplishment.

Things got significantly more comforting once the hot dishes started arriving. The Gambas al Ajillo came still bubbling in garlic oil like the universe intended, alongside toasted bread whose only purpose in life was clearly to absorb every last drop. The Mixed Croquettes disappeared embarrassingly fast. Super crisp outside, creamy inside, some filled with seafood, others with chicken, all topped with melting Manchego. Basically, elevated party food, which is exactly what you want in a place like this. Same goes for the Patatas Bravas, gloriously covered in smoky sauce and aioli. The Mini Hamburguesas Cubanas felt very “2am decisions but make them chic”. Soft glossy buns, juicy beef patties, molten cheese, smoky onions, skinny fries on the side, all saved from becoming too heavy by this sharp, herby mojo verde sauce running through everything. One of the standouts of the evening though, was the Cubano de Ropa Vieja. The chef explained that it was his reinterpretation of the traditional Cuban dish usually served with rice, except here it arrives as this perfectly pressed sandwich stuffed with smoky pulled Angus beef, melted cheese and honey mustard. Deeply worth it.
Desserts continued the same slightly indulgent, very shareable energy. The Choco-Bana Cubano Bliss was extremely extra in the best possible way. Layers of rich chocolate, brûléed banana, cafecito syrup, dark chocolate sauce everywhere, very dramatic, very decadent, very much not a dessert you order if you’re pretending to be restrained. The Churros were warm, cinnamon-heavy, served with a delicious chocolate sauce, while the Cuban Bañuelos felt lighter with a soft, airy centre and

warm cinnamon-anise syrup that made them oddly addictive. The drinks, importantly, are not just decorative at Mumble Jungle. They actually hold their own. The Maria arrived in a painted skull-shaped glass with guava, lime and rose salt, tasting fresh, sharp and thankfully nowhere near syrup territory. Meanwhile, La Bodeguita, layered with mint and passion fruit foam, went down alarmingly easily. I also really liked the energy of the place. Chef Hossam Dweik came over several times throughout the evening to talk through the thinking behind certain dishes, clearly passionate and genuinely excited about what he’s putting out. The rest of

the team matched that same warmth, being very attentive without hovering. By the end of the night, Mumble Jungle had quietly ticked every box. Good food, good music, good drinks, good energy. And proof that Doha’s dining scene still knows how to surprise you when it wants to. ✤

In search of good pasta and emotional support carbs, Sirine Boudjadi paid a visit to Cucina’s new menu preview at Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel. The verdict? Come hungry. Very hungry.

One thing about me: give me bread fresh out of the oven and I’m immediately in a good mood. So, when focaccia and warm bread landed on the table at Cucina, I already had a feeling this lunch was going to go very well for me. I was there to try the restaurant’s new menu launching on June 1, created alongside Sous Chef Roberta Crovi, a Lake Garda native who joined the kitchen three months ago and is already bringing fresh energy to the place.
The bread itself is made from the same dough they use for their pizzas, left to ferment for at least 20 hours before baking. Apparently, that makes it lighter and easier to digest. What I personally heard was: you can eat more of it. As if the bread situation wasn’t already enough, the first starter arrived and it was, somehow, fried pizza dough. The dish, called La Burrata, is Chef Roberta’s playful take on the classic burrata starter. You know the ones: burrata placed dramatically in the middle of a plate as if nobody has ever seen cheese before. Here, she plays with texture and temperature instead. You get crispy fried pizza dough topped with roasted tomatoes, olives, basil and cold creamy burrata. At this point, my carb consumption was becoming slightly concerning, so I was relieved to see a bit of greenery arrive in the form of the Insalata Cucina. Mixed lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, chickpeas, olives, nuts and parmesan: simple, colourful and exactly what I needed before continuing my journey deeper into pasta territory.
The mains continued the positive trend, starting with the Cappellacci Alla Cacciatora. The pasta itself was beautifully

delicate, filled with rich hunter-style chicken and served in a light golden broth that managed to feel both elegant and deeply comforting at the same time. Very cosy Sunday lunch energy, but elevated. Right after that came the Risotto Ricotta E Asparagi which, despite me not being vegetarian, nearly stole the show. The presentation already felt fresh and spring-like, with ribbons and slices of asparagus layered over ultra-creamy green risotto dotted with ricotta. I kept going back for “one last bite” and immediately lying to myself every single time. And then came the most intriguing plate of the day: Green Is The New Black. The black homemade potato gnocchi were soft and pillowy, balanced by a pea cream that brought freshness and just a touch of sweetness. Finished with squid ragout, the dish felt more daring and experimental than the rest of the mains.
Just when I thought the kitchen had finally stopped feeding me, a huge calzone landed on the table. It’s Chef Roberta’s favourite pizza and I get why. Filled with tomato sauce, mozzarella, olives, mushrooms and ham, it was simple in the best possible way. No overcomplicated twists, no trying-too-hard fine dining drama. Just really good dough, properly balanced flavours and that perfect mix of crispy outside and soft, cheesy middle. During the meal, I was also introduced to two new mocktails. First, the Giada, named after the green jade stone it takes its colour from. Blending chamomile tea, green apple and citrus, it tasted like a sophisticated sweet shop situation. Slightly candy-like, silky and weirdly addictive. I’m usually not into sugary drinks at all, but this one somehow got me. My personal favourite, though, was the Tuscano: a mix of hibiscus, passionfruit and Mediterranean tonic. Floral, a little tangy and super refreshing. If Doha summer had a personality, this would probably be it.

The experience ended on a very strong and sweet note. Obviously, one of the signatures here is the Tiramisu Classico: layers of espresso-soaked ladyfingers and mascarpone cream dusted with cocoa powder. Creamy, rich, properly coffeeforward, not too sweet… Just a solid classic done well. But the real bestseller is clearly the Cioccolato Fondente. For once, I didn’t even have to publicly declare my love for chocolate, it simply arrived and found me. Although, admittedly, after the full carb marathon I had just put my body through, this dessert nearly finished me off completely. And naturally, we love a bit of tableside drama. The dessert arrived as a chocolate sphere before warm red berry sauce was poured over the top, slowly melting the shell and revealing everything hidden inside: silky ganache, pieces of chocolate fondant, crunchy eggless meringue… A beautiful mix of textures. Beyond the food itself, a big part of why the whole experience works so well is the atmosphere. Cucina manages to feel cosy and authentically Italian without falling into the usual cliché aesthetic. Exposed brick walls, wooden tables and soft golden lighting give the space a lively but still relaxed energy. The open kitchen also adds a nice touch to the place, especially watching the chefs move around behind the counter while pizzas and pasta keep making their way across the room. A lot of what made the lunch so enjoyable was also the team itself. Everyone was incredibly kind, welcoming and attentive throughout the meal

without ever making the service feel overly formal or stiff. Safe to say, this new menu starts very strong. Just maybe don’t book anything too active afterwards! ✤

A good spa treatment can relax you, a great one gets everything else right too. For AMS, Heavenly Spa at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa does exactly that, with a smooth, well-paced experience from start to finish.
Some spa visits are about the treatment alone, others are about how the whole afternoon unfolds. My recent Saturday visit to Heavenly Spa at The Westin Doha was very much the latter: several unhurried hours where everything from the welcome to the final moments in the relaxation room were just what the doctor ordered, with a healthy dose of rest and relaxation. There’s something satisfying about making the most of a Saturday, and this felt exactly that, just being pampered.
The entrance to Heavenly Spa immediately creates a sense of separation from the outside world. As soon as you step through the doors, you can feel the stress disappearing from your body. Soft lighting, elegant interiors and candlelit walkways give the space a calm, cocooning feel from the outset.
Maureen was waiting for me and greeted me graciously the moment I arrived. I was a few minutes delayed due to the busy valet parking area, itself a good sign of a lively hotel, but she handled it with warmth and complete professionalism. First impressions matter in hospitality, and she set the tone beautifully.
Another thoughtful touch was being given a brief tour of the spa facilities on arrival. It meant I knew exactly where everything was and where to head after the treatment to continue enjoying the steam, sauna and relaxation areas. Small gestures like that remove uncertainty and help guests settle into the experience straight away.
I began outside by the pool, where Doha’s changing season is now leaning into hotter days. The atmosphere struck a lovely balance, lively enough to feel energised, yet calm enough to remain relaxing. There was a real family feel, with guests enjoying the weather and making the most of the afternoon. Yet it never felt hectic. Comfortable sun loungers, two towels ready, attentive service and staff who quickly helped you settle in all made it easy to switch off.
Music poolside was upbeat and current, but kept at the right level. Some places mistake louder for better, but here I felt they had the right approach, loud enough to create atmosphere, low enough to still hold a conversation. Most of all, it felt like a small oasis tucked away inside the city. Once inside, you’d hardly know central Doha was just beyond the walls.
Before heading into the treatment, I was invited to choose from a selection of stones carrying different intentions: gratitude, love and joy. Nems, my therapist, explained that the chosen stone could become something to focus on or quietly reflect upon during the massage. I chose gratitude, which was a thoughtful touch and a lovely way to personalise the experience.

A 90-minute massage makes all the difference. It gives the therapist time to understand where tension sits, work through it properly, and create something far more tailored than the usual one-hour session can offer.
Nems understood me. I requested strong pressure, and she delivered exactly that while still keeping the treatment controlled and comfortable. She quickly identified knots through my upper shoulders and clearly had the experience to know where firmer work was needed and where a softer touch was more effective.
She was intuitive throughout, skilled at reading the room, knowing when conversation added warmth and when silence was the better choice. She had a jovial, friendly nature and you could tell she enjoys people, but never at the expense of the calm environment.
The treatment room was private and elegant, with rose petals prepared on the bed and a beautiful freestanding bath adding an extra sense of luxury. The bed itself was especially soft and comfortable, making it easy to settle in completely. Towards the end, the treatment flowed into a wonderful head massage and what felt like a mini facial, a lovely finishing touch that elevated the whole experience.
After the treatment, I spent time in the steam and sauna areas, which were peaceful, quiet and immaculately clean. They weren’t busy, which made it all the more enjoyable. The showers had a good strong water pressure to them, the lockers refreshingly simple to use (something not always guaranteed in spas and which irritates me when I spend ages trying to use them), and the vanity area was well stocked with everything you might need.
A notable detail was the presence of Babor products, the respected German skincare brand, which added another layer of quality and gave the space a more premium feel.
I finished in the relaxation area and stayed around 20 minutes. It was completely silent, comfortable and exactly the right final chapter to the afternoon. Alongside dates and tea, there were apples and chilled water available, allowing guests to stay and unwind for a while.
Heavenly Spa at The Westin Doha gets the overall experience just right. Warm front-of-house service from Maureen, an excellent massage from Nems, premium facilities and a calm, polished atmosphere throughout. What stayed with me most was how seamlessly the whole experience came together, it just worked. For a Saturday afternoon in Doha, it was time very well spent and a perfect end to the weekend. ✤

Fernanda Langhammer visited the stunning Seychelles islands, finding beauty and nature at Constance Ephelia and Constance Lemuria.

Exploring a new country, its architecture, cuisine and culture is something that excites me. I had never been to Seychelles before, and I was lucky enough to see it through my stays at Constance Ephelia and Constance Lemuria hotels – an experience worth sharing.
My experience of this slice of bliss on Earth started at Constance Ephelia, located on the main island of Mahé. After a drive across the island, which allowed me to take in all the beauty of the location, we reached the hotel which is in a natural park occupying 120 hectares – it's a huge resort filled with greenery, mangroves, white sand and azure waters.
Smiley Tembi, the watchman, welcomed us with enthusiasm, wishing us a pleasant stay. By the hotel entrance, a big team was waiting and made sure our check in went smoothly, conducted in the sofa area of Zee Bar, perfectly aligning with the chilled atmosphere of the resort.
Constance Ephelia is composed of 313 rooms ranging from junior and senior suites to two- and three-bedroom villas, hillside villas and a Presidential Suite – all have either garden or sea views. My Junior Suite had the spectacular ocean a few steps away and was very spacious. It had a comfortable bed full of pillows, a large sofa and a bathtub separating the room from the bathroom. Boasting all the necessary amenities, there was also plenty of space to store my belongings.
The hotel's position is privileged, the natural park sits at the end of the peninsula and the property is divided into North and South, offering two main beaches and a few private gems. The beautiful and blooming mangroves create a path between the two parts. A good way to get around the property is to request one of the bikes available at the Fitness Centre. The beach in the South area, where I stayed, experienced somewhat rough weather during my stay (it depends on the time of the year), while the North beach was very calm and great for swimming. The imposing mountains surrounding the water make this place quite magical, making me feel at one with nature.
But Constance Ephelia offers much more than just dreamy beaches; it provides an array of activities, with hiking being my favourite of them. A 1.6km walk in the forest to cross from South to North, a path up the mountain providing the most breathtaking views – a unique experience without leaving the hotel premises.
Constance Spa is another highlight. With 18 rooms shaped like little huts, the space is a haven of tranquillity and transports your mind to a place of calm. With a pool in the centre, yoga classes happening outdoors and privacy in each treatment room, this part of the property is a jewel in a lush tropical setting.
I headed there for a classic massage to immerse myself

in relaxation. My therapist, Ratna, understood the task and, instead of working on pressure points, she delivered a treatment that allowed me to enjoy a true state of restfulness. The wind outside, kissing the palm trees that eventually touched the natural roof of the hut, created a sound that made my mind drift away.
If you like water, there are eight pools spread across the property and two boathouses offering watersports gear on each side of the resort. You can choose from pedal boats, small sailing catamarans, kayaks and snorkelling gear. However, if you prefer land sports, you'll find four tennis courts, padel and squash courts and a fully equipped gym to help you keep up your workout routine. There is even a kids' club called Coconut Tribe.
On visiting a beach resort, you don't generally expect food to be a standout element. However, at Constance Hotels & Resorts, this matter is taken seriously and is offered with a wide selection of fine grapes. Constance Ephelia has seven eateries: Corossol (where the breakfast is served, but where you’ll also find a selection of international dishes), Helios (Mediterranean cuisine), Adam & Eve (with a Southeast Asian menu), Seselwa (to explore local Seychellois recipes), Cyann (for a fine-dining experience) and Zee and Kabana bars for a more relaxed atmosphere with small bites and creative drinks. Every outlet has at least one or two sommeliers helping elevate the dining experience.
I had many memorable meals during my stay, but I will highlight some of my favourites. The Tom Yum soup at Adam & Eve was beautiful, not too thin, offering the

perfect creaminess and coconut flavour, with prawns and shimeji mushrooms cooked to perfection. Still at the same restaurant, the cubed red snapper in a sticky, sweet and tangy sauce, with crispy edges and a soft interior, was simply divine, especially when paired with the smoked eggplant. At Seselwa, the dish that took me back home, Palm Heart Gratin, won my taste buds. Baked palm heart in bechamel sauce, topped with parmesan cheese, came bubbling and felt incredibly comforting. At Cyann, the prawn carpaccio, accompanied by sauces that represented the colours of the country's flag, was almost too pretty to eat – fine dining at its best. Each eatery has its specialised chef delivering the best of each cuisine.
To get to this property on the island of Praslin, we took a small plane, and in 15 minutes we reached our new destination. Constance Lemuria is a short drive from the airport and feels a bit more elegant and cosy, giving the impression that it was built as part of nature. Our arrival was received with grandeur; a gong played while we walked towards the massive doors of the hotel, opening right after the last sound disappeared. The vision beyond the doors was stunning, the open reception, showcasing the infinity pool facing the ocean – an image that keeps replaying in my mind.
My accommodation at Lemuria was very similar to Ephelia, a Junior Suite with sea views. But it was brighter and the furnishings a little more sophisticated. I loved that there was a window between the bathtub and the room, adding a touch of charm to the space. A clothesline above the tub was my favourite detail; many resorts forget to offer a solution to dry wet swimsuits. The double sink and spacious shower made it perfect.
One of the main attractions at Lemuria is its 18-hole championship golf course. I am not an expert in the sport (far from it), but we were invited to try the course with a patient instructor, Gary. He gave us some basic instruction and, in no time, we were hitting our balls with different clubs, understanding movements and lingo – a fun experience for beginners and a great setup for pros. The beach in front of my room had slightly choppy waters; however, I went for a short swim on one of the mornings and it was splendid – nature is perfect! To best enjoy a proper swim, we headed to Anse Georgette, a beach worldrenowned for its soft white sand, turquoise waters and lush green surroundings. I love the water (I grew up swimming in the sea), so I stayed long hours catching waves and diving when they were too high – I felt like a kid again.
With five restaurants and one bar, gastronomy is once

again at the centre of the experience – to the delight of the foodie in me. Legend is the main restaurant, where a varied and delicious breakfast is served, offering stunning views. Located in a high area, the greenery and turquoise water bathed my eyes while a black coffee soothed my soul in the early hours of the day.
Takamaka (yes, the name of the country's famous liqueur, but also the national tree), is a barefoot dining space – eating with my feet deep in the soft sand was a big highlight. The dinner was accompanied by entertainment featuring local songs played on percussion instruments, creating an atmosphere of vibrancy that made the meal one of the best of the entire trip. We tried a set menu called My Seychelles Story by Chef Jordi Villa. It was incredibly
refreshing and paired very well with the climate. A coconut palm salad, served on a coconut shell, was spot on for me for its simplicity and smooth flavours.
The Nest has an incredible location on top of a small hill, offering views of the sea and beach, as well as local cuisine.
The seafood curry there is a must-have!
Last but not least, Diva is all about fine dining. The décor is funky with purple chandeliers resembling jellyfish and raffia chairs that recreate turtle shells. Dinner was in the company of lovely Marie Noella, Lemuria's Executive Assistant Manager, who told us all about Constance Hotels & Resorts. She's been working with the company for 25 years, certainly a voice of experience and someone who understands the brand very well. To my surprise, the menu had my name on it, which was a caring touch that made me smile – a personalised souvenir. The entire selection was impeccable, but the Hokkaido scallops with Kampot pepper and verjus emulsion (a creamy buttery sauce made with verjus, a nonalcoholic juice of unripe grapes) was perfection in a bite. The crunchy top of the scallop, mixed with the sweetness of the mollusc and the saltiness of the jus, made it a star dish.
Both properties take the environment where they are located very seriously. At Ephelia, Markus is the sustainability manager and at Lemuria, Joseph. We enjoyed a talk with them and discovered that Ephelia is home to seven species of mangroves and is certified as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. An important certification that promotes conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. We walked around the property and learned about the bees making mangrove honey, spiders that create a balanced environment and even tried a germinated coconut that Markus promptly opened with the skill of a person who is wilderness-smart. In Lemuria, Joseph explained why they didn't cut the bushes near the beach to give guests an open view of the sea. The reason? The vegetation is a hatching nest for turtles. There is even a special room by the sea with visual and written explanations about the turtles, where Robert, the turtle manager, sits.
Constance's motto, True by Nature, says a lot; they not only celebrate the natural environment where the brand has its properties, but also the nature of its people. Everyone was extremely polite without losing their own personality. We got to explore the properties in the company of many of them, sharing their stories and helping to bring the brand's vision to life. Big thanks to everyone that made this memorable experience possible. ✤

With summer well and truly here, it’s time to plan that much needed vacay and hit the beach with sunscreen, drinks and a good book in hand.
Promising stunning turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, these four spectacular beach escapes capture everything from warm and wonderful to tropical and exotic. Explore our pick of the best beach holidays this summer.
You've probably seen the photos and thought it’s an Instagram filter. That pristine white sand – the kind that almost hurts to look at in direct sun – stretching along a curve of stunning turquoise water. The truth is, Boracay actually looks like that. It went through a major restoration in 2018 and has been genuinely transformed – cleaner, calmer and with a vibe that’s somewhere between lively and laid-back. Regularly ranked among Asia’s best, White Beach's four kilometres of flour-fine sand is so soft it squeaks underfoot, with waters that still only reach your knees 20 metres out. Divided into distinct zones, Station 1 at the northern end offers quiet luxury and a wide shoreline, while further south, the livelier Station 2 has restaurants, bars and souvenir shops. Sunsets are built into the itinerary, and half the island shows up to watch the sky turn bruised purple and gold over the South China Sea.
Bulabog Beach on the eastern side is a favourite among kitesurfers and windsurfers. Puka Shell Beach to the north is quieter, with a coarser, rockier feel. For snorkelling, the coral gardens around Crocodile Island are a short boat ride and worth every minute, while Ariel’s Point has become the go-to for cliff jumping. Paraw sailing (traditional outrigger boats with two sails) can be arranged in an hour, giving you the best view of the coastline.
Accommodation ranges from budget backpacker guesthouses behind the beach to upscale hotel resorts. Seafood dominates most menus – grilled prawns, crab, squid and fresh mango with practically everything. Don't
leave without trying the iconic calamansi muffins or a Chori burger from a street stall.
Go once and you'll spend the flight home already planning a trip back.

The Mediterranean gets busy in summer, but Malta still surprises with how much it packs into so little space. Sea, history, food, late evenings, more sea – it's all within easy reach and is brilliant for travellers who want beach weather mixed with a bit of city energy.
June is hard to beat. The sea is the perfect swimming temperature and the festa season is in full swing, with towns and villages honouring their local patron saints with lit-up streets, brass bands and spectacular fireworks.
Valletta deserves a day or two. One of the EU's smallest capitals and a UNESCO World Heritage city, it rewards getting mildly lost – Baroque churches, harbour views, colourful balconies and narrow limestone streets that glow in late afternoon. Restaurants spill onto the pavements serving fresh lampuki fish, rabbit stew, pastizzi (flaky savoury pastries) and Kinnie, a bittersweet soft drink that's become a cult favourite.
But the coast is where Malta shines in summer. With no rivers causing sediment runoff, the water is among the clearest in the Mediterranean. The famous Blue Lagoon on tiny Comino is picture-perfect, with vivid azure waters sheltered by pale rock – arrive early before it gets busy!
For something quieter, St Peter's Pool in the southeast is flat limestone above a natural swimming hole, with a 20-foot jump for the adrenaline junkies! The Red Tower coastline in Mellieħa is equally beautiful, while Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa in the northwest are the best proper sandy beaches. Don't miss Gozo (Malta's quieter sister island), with its rolling hills, clifftop walks and Ramla Bay's burnt-orange sand.
Small enough to explore in a week, Malta is a great Mediterranean option for those who like beach holidays with a little culture.
Step off the plane in Zanzibar and the scent of cloves, cinnamon and cardamom arrives before anything else.
The Spice Island lives up to its name.
The main island, Unguja, is a former Omani sultanate turned Swahili cultural hub, giving it historical character that most beach destinations rarely have. June is one of the best times to visit – the long rains have just cleared, humidity has dropped and the island is left lush and cool by the Kusi trade winds.
The northern beaches at Nungwi and Kendwa are where Zanzibar does its best impression of paradise – powdery white sand, a tide that barely moves, water you can float in for hours. You’ll find lively beach bars, sunset dhow cruises and snorkelling trips to coral reefs – Mnemba Atoll ranks among the best in East Africa and sea turtle sightings are practically a given. Resorts range from simple bungalows to polished luxury, but even the fancy ones tend to feel low-key.
On the east coast, Paje and Jambiani are quieter, with wider beaches and tides that pull back miles to reveal seaweed farms and tidal pools. They’re also some of the world’s

most popular kitesurfing spots.
Stone Town is unavoidable. The old quarter is a maze of carved wooden doors, spice stalls and coral-stone walls with centuries of Swahili, Arab, Indian and Portuguese history. Forodhani Gardens night market is where you go for the legendary Zanzibar Pizza – a street food favourite that has very little to do with Italy and everything to do with being delicious! Don’t leave without a spice farm tour, where you can hold, smell and cook with local spices.
Most people come to Zanzibar for the beaches and leave surprised by everything else.
Hawaii needs no introduction, yet still manages to exceed expectations. It's one of the most isolated populated landmasses on Earth and nowhere else is quite like it.
Each of the main islands has a different character. Oahu gets the crowds, and fairly so. Waikiki and Honolulu have real city energy and surf culture is built into everyday life.
But drive the Kamehameha Highway along Windward Coast and things calm down quickly: small towns, roadside trucks selling garlic shrimp and shave ice drizzled with lilikoi (passion fruit) syrup. Lanikai Beach sits quietly east of Kailua with its turquoise water and two small offshore islands that most travellers never quite make it to.
Maui is a calmer, polished resort experience – Kaanapali and Wailea for those who want beautiful golden sand and a sun lounger sorted by 9am. The scenic Road to Hana is absolutely worth the drive, especially for the waterfall pools. Kauai is dramatically different again: wilder, greener, with cliffs and rainforest that look like somewhere prehistoric. The Big Island is for travellers who want a slice of adventure with their beach holiday. Hike through Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, night snorkel with manta rays off Kona, or drive up Mauna Kea on a clear night for spectacular stargazing. Hāpuna Beach offers a long arc of white sand on the west coast; Papakōlea is one of the few green sand beaches on Earth; and at Punalu'u, green sea turtles lie around on jet-black sand as though they own the place. The flight from Qatar is the longest on this list but Hawaii has a way of making it all feel worth it. ✤

HUMOUR, SPORTS ESSAY No Dumb Questions by
Jason and Travis Kelce
If you’ve ever wanted to know whether your sporting heroes pour the milk or the cereal first or which body part they’d make detachable, then this is the book for you. Famed gridiron greats, the Kelce brothers, answer some of the craziest fan questions they’ve ever been asked with humour and brotherly camaraderie.
They say a story’s not old until it’s told and this one made us chuckle, even though it happened a little while ago.
In August last year, a sweet-toothed black bear known as Cinnamon broke into an ice cream shop in California’s Lake Tahoe and helped himself to a three-gallon tub of chocolate chip cookie dough before making a clean getaway. According to shop owner Beth Moxley, she was impressed at the furry villain’s stealth since, unlike other bear burglars, he didn’t make a mess – just a quick

in and out with little to show for his presence other than the missing tub, a knocked over trash can and two rather large paw prints. However, a little internet research shows this is not an isolated incident. It seems bear banditry is on the rise and we discovered a more recent tale of a black bear who broke into an ice cream shop and consumed 40 pounds – around 18kg – of the sweet dessert before collapsing into a sugar coma which lasted two days. Bit like Goldilocks in reverse.
Yes, we’ve got a bit of a theme going on here – it’s amazing the wormholes you fall down once you start and we absolutely love the foolishness of this tale.
Sky News reports that three people were jailed for insurance fraud after claiming their cars were damaged by a bear – but the vandal turned out to be someone dressed in a bear suit.
In a bid to get their paws on more than USD140,000, claims were made for damage to a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes, with home camera footage

showing the ‘bear’ in action.
The car doors even showed minor scratches imitating paw marks. But the plan unravelled when investigators showed the footage to a biologist who said it was ‘clearly a human in a bear suit’. Detectives later discovered a bear suit in one of the suspects’ homes and the game was up with all three admitting the crime and receiving 180 days in jail. It happened north of Los Angeles and we’re starting to wonder if it’s a bear thing or a California thing.
We’ve all heard of Boaty McBoatface, right? But what about Stormy McStormFace? Apparently, the UK not only gives the public the chance to name underwater research vessels and gritting machines but also storms.
Each year the Met Office gets thousands of suggestions – more than 50,000 for the current year alone – and there are some crackers in there, such as Elon Gust, Dame Judi Drench and Keir Stormer.

But, while the forecasters do, reportedly, find the ‘creative’ suggestions both clever and funny, there is a serious side with a Met Office spokesman explaining that they’d never use a comedy storm moniker since the names have an important safety function as only severe weather alerts get their own name.
A couple of those actually chosen are Dave and Wubbo – and we thought they said they were serious!
