• THE EDITOR

2020: Get Tight and Get Right...

“

Nothing in the universe can stop you from letting go and starting over.” - Guy Finley

A

n entire year! I cannot believe this is my official 12th edition as your local editor. My journey has seen so many ups and downs and it has been an INSANE ride. I had big dreams for a 19-year-old who officially launched her career as a writer. I wanted to experience life and write about it. Art, travel, food - I wanted to tell my own story and somehow inspire people in any way I could, even if it meant getting out of your slacks and heading for a dessert I recommended. Can you imagine landing your dream job? Neither could I. As I enter 2020 and prepare for the ultimate big Three Oh to hit, I am simply grateful for it all. The people I’ve met, the 12kgs I gained on the job, the dreams that came true and the work family that I have. FACT’s local editor is nothing without the dream team behind her who makes sure she’s shining for you all. As I humbly write this note in the last week of December, I send you all a bit of my luck. May this year be about finding yourself and living your dreams. May we all learn to accept who we are and accept others for what they offer. The lifelong lesson I learnt is the biggest game of it all; patience, known as ‘sabr’ in urdu. Sabr is all we need friends! Dreams are always worth running after. ☺

ENERGY PLAYGROUND Under the patronage of its Chairperson, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums (QM) announced that TOTAL, one of the top integrated oil and gas companies in Qatar, is the official sponsor of the energy playground at the National Museum of Qatar (NMOQ). THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN QM and TOTAL was celebrated in a high-profile signing ceremony at NMOQ last night. The sponsorship of the energy playground, one of the three playgrounds spread across the museum gardens, will provide a unique experience for families to explore and discover the story of energy, in particular the story of oil, in relation to Qatar. The playground will be designed for families to engage in intergenerational kinetic play activities; from the extraction of crude oil, through to its processing and even its byproducts that in turn, benefit today’s societies. The playground can be entered from various pathways – enabling a “choose your own adventure” industrialized experience and will ultimately expose visitors to the future of renewable and non-renewable energy. The signing ceremony welcomed Her Excellency, Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Ahmad Al Namla, Acting CEO at Qatar Museums, Patrick Pouyanné Total’s Chairman and CEO and Laurent Wolffsheim, Total Qatar Country Chair, in the presence of other distinguished guests. The narrative of energy industries, like oil, is an ongoing theme explored across later galleries at NMOQ, which highlight topics such as the discovery of oil, oil negotiations and correspondences, the rapid modernization the country 16

witnessed due to the oil industry, as well as, the impact it has had on socio-cultural development. Her Excellency, Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, said: “Here at Qatar Museums, we are constantly engaging our community with learning resources that can connect with various groups such as schools, families, as well as today’s youth in general. “The energy playground is more than a playground — it’s a place for learning, a place for play — a sector that allowed Qatar to transform its economy to what it is today,” she added. Without the energy sector Qatar’s National Vision wouldn’t have been realizable. We are grateful for Totals sponsorship, as a legacy for Year of Qatar France this playground will be available in 2020 for all or our communities to learn about energy through play.” During the signing ceremony, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of Total, said: “We highly cherish our newfound partnership with Qatar Museums, and with Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa, and this reflects Total’s vision for youth inclusion and education, which is aligned with our ambition and values.” ✤

IT’S A BURGER THING After all the burger joints in Doha called out for some good old cheese burger love, FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan went to her favourite Build It Burger only to find herself in a conversation with Chef Noel Hall… We are absolutely in love with the new menu at Build It Burger. Tell us the ‘secret ingredient’ for the new items? The secret ingredient for the new items is passion. Love for what we do, and never jeopardising the quality of our ingredients! The uniqueness of our burgers are the fresh ingredients, the local meat, the freshly baked buns and the fresh vegetables. There are so many new diets on the market, how are you trying to incorporate all of these ‘trendy’ demands of the public with the menu? There really are so many new diet trends in the market, it’s sometimes difficult to keep up with them. What I always say is to keep it simple, clean and fresh. By incorporating the freshest ingredients, you give the public better nutrition, especially nowadays when people are so rushed for time. We have also added the Keto burger, the Fast-growing burger concept to cater to consumers following the keto diet, the latest chain to acknowledge the popularity of the low-carb, high-fat eating plan. Which one is your absolute favourite burger from your own menu? I would have to say it’s between the Keto burger (because I am a huge fan of the Keto diet), as well as the Classic Beef burger on a par level. Nothing beats a classic Beef burger that is wellprepared. What is the ‘Doha’ twist you add to your menu? Well our ingredients of course! We aim to support the local suppliers here in Doha by using local ingredients as much as we possibly can. We also prepared a unique Qatari burger for Qatar National Day with special Qatari flavours, it was a huge hit! Do you like burgers, especially after being the mastermind behind this place, and which is your favourite cuisine? Always. I think that being the mastermind behind Build It Burger has even deepened my taste for burgers. As a chef, I find it difficult to say which cuisine is my favourite because I enjoy the mix and fusion of different components from a variety of cuisines, but if I had to choose one I would say Japanese cuisine, not only because it’s very technical but also considering the history and the artistic nature behind each dish. ✤

KATARA CULTURAL VILLAGE Katara Cultural Village is the largest and the most multidimensional cultural project of Qatar. With beautiful theatres, concert halls, exhibition galleries and cutting-edge facilities, it aims to spread awareness about every culture and civilisation. Bringing together culture and recreation, the area is a representation of what Qatar stands for. Katara’s epicentre is Katara Art Centre, the place is more than just a hub for exhibitions and creative displays. Although the centre always has an on-going slew of exhibits for people to go check out free of charge, they also offer free innovative workshops in different arrays to help foster and spur creativity amongst the Doha community. From a number of international, regional and local festivals to workshops, performances and exhibitions, Katara Cultural Village is sure to make the art buff in you very happy! GO: Visit www.katara.net/en/home for more information MUSEUM OF ISLAMIC ART Another architectural wonder not-to-be-missed on your exploration of Qatar is the iconic Museum of Islamic Art (MIA). For anyone who’s been living in Doha and is yet to visit MIA, prepare for a fix of truly culturally significant artworks and exhibitions. With the aim of opening minds and shaping the future, the Museum of Islamic Art uses the power of art to bring the story of Islamic culture to life. Home to a collection of artistic objects gathered from around the Islamic world, MIA truly cements Qatar’s position

as the cultural capital of the Middle East. Representing Islamic art from three continents and over 1,400 years, MIA is the place to fuel your cultural, artistic and social curiosity. Visiting exhibitions keep things exciting and interesting, and there’s plenty for kids to do in the surrounding MIA Park too. A café and gift shop are also on site for leisurely snacks and cool souvenirs. GO: General admission is QR50 for adults and a number of discounts are available for students and Culture Pass members. Visit www.mia.org.qa/ for more information. AL THAKIRA MANGROVES FOREST We are blown away at the beauty of this place and how little we knew about it! Al Thakira Mangrove Forest is amongst Qatar’s oldest and largest such forests. It’s a welcome surprise to find a mangrove forest like this such a short distance from industrial Al Khor. Around five miles from the city of Al Khor, you can easily reach the forest by car, but be prepared for some off-road driving (approx. 1.2 miles) which leads the dirt track onto the beach and the start of the forest. The area is not signposted and there are no facilities built for visitors so be prepared to get channel your inner Bear Grylls. Considering the harsh environment, there is a relatively low number of plants endemic to Qatar, and mangroves are one of these sturdy few. The local type of mangrove native to the country is the Avicennia Marina a species that can endure the high level of salinity that’s characteristic of the Gulf. • 20 FOR 2020 NATIONAL MUSEUM OF QATAR There’s no way that you can live in Doha and not check out this architectural masterpiece. The National Museum of Qatar is spread over a staggering 52,000 square metres, and with a route extending over 1.5 kilometres, it allows visitors to explore the evolution of Qatar through creative storytelling and artistic works. The museum is set out chronologically, beginning with the period before the peninsula was inhabited by humans, and continuing up to the present day. From the entrance the route passes through a succession of impressive multi-shaped spaces until it reaches the museum’s grand finale: the painstakingly restored Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. Not only are their ample photo opps, especially in the 112,000-square-metre park with gentle landscaping, a broad 900-metre-long artificial lagoon, and gardens with large green areas, paths and walkways, designed by French landscape architect Michel Desvignes. Tip: During the cooler weather, it makes for a delightful setting for picnics. GO: General admission is QR50 for adults and a number of discounts are available for students and Culture Pass members. Visit www. nmoq.org.qa for more information. MUSFUR SINKHOLE Another ancient site that doesn’t get near as much attention as it should is the Musfur Sinkhole. There are no bats living inside this giant cave, but migratory birds regularly build their nests high along the jagged layers of limestone and gypsum. The Musfur Sinkhole was formed an estimated 325,000 to 500,000 years ago. The opening is about 40 feet wide and plunges over 300 feet down into the earth, making it the largest sinkhole in Qatar. While there is also a cave a few miles from Musfur, this is a standalone sinkhole, and it is not itself connected to other caves. Follow Salwa Road and take exit 35 heading north. Follow the main road for about 10km and take an eastbound dirt road following the powerlines. Musfur Sinkhole is on this dirt track, about 12km from the paved road. It is easy to spot as it is the only piece of land surrounded by a chain-link fence. Note that sinkholes are not the safest places to be as they are inherently unstable and other sections of soil or subsoil may collapse – so it would be wise to take a professional to Musfur with you. GO: Visit www.visitqatar.qa/ for more information. SOUQ AL WAKRAH Enormous and enchanting, Souq Al Wakrah is a hotbed of cultural and social activity for locals and tourists alike that will keep you entertained for hours on end. Boasting historic value, an array of culinary delights and a serene ambience, Al Wakra Souq is a popular spot for a retreat from the city and for visitors looking for genuine Qatari life. From gorging on a variety of cuisines to taking a relaxing walk along the Corniche’s 3km stretch and shopping to your heart’s content, Al Wakra Souq is your one-stop destination for all things culture, entertainment and dining! GO: Visit www.visitqatar.qa for more information. THE PEARL QATAR Comprising of two interlinked horseshoe-shaped pieces of land, the manmade island of The Pearl spans around four million sqms. A popular place for expat residences, the bustling “Porto Arabia” 26

fact magazine

encircles an impressive marina of yachts and is a great place for a quiet stroll along the promenade to take in the sights or for a stop at one of the numerous cafes for a coffee and a bite to eat. Take a water taxi (at a very reasonably priced QR25 for a return trip) from Tower 1 through to Qanat Quartier, where pretty pastel houses border a Venetian-inspired winding network of canals, or head to Medina Centrale, the central shopping zone of the island, with more than 55,000 sq metres of retail and restaurants. GO: www. www.thepearlqatar.com for more information. AL ZUBARAH FORT The dramatic UNESCO recognised Al Zubarah Fort and its surrounding archaeological works is a restored part of Qatar’s cultural history. While the archaeological remains here date back to the 1700s, the fort, which was built in 1938, is the youngest feature. It overlooks the old bustling pearl fishing town of Al Zubarah, which traders from China to Britain sailed to some 200 years ago. Nowadays, the village is a ghost town, although still charming and worth a visit for a day out of the city and your next perfect instagram post. Plan ahead as the location of the village isn’t obvious. You can get there by turning right on the road just before the fort and following it for 10 minutes to Al Jumail. Park right in the village and bring water shoes for the sea - you’re likely to step on barnacles. GO: Visit www.visitqatar.qa for more information. FILM CITY A place that many people are yet to discover, Film City is a few hours’ drive into the Qatari desert. Jump off the road and start bumping through rocks and ruts, and eventually into the sand dunes that give way to sand cliffs, and on the horizon will start to rise a truly bizarre sight. Film City is a palm tree-laden, sand-coloured, mock-up village built for a film or television series. It’s a contemporary replica of a picturesque Bedouin-style village, completely deserted, with eeriness thrown in for good measure. The abandoned set sits in the middle of the secluded desert peninsula of Zekreet. There are

almost no people or cars around, and no signs to give any clues as to why the ghost town is there. Get on Dukhan highway taking D-Ring Road to Shamal and then after travelling 90kms or 55 miles, turn right once you see the Zekreet sign, or alternatively, you could take someone with you who knows where it is. Fourteen bronze sculptures that represent different phases of the gestation of a human fetus, from conception to birth, stand outside Sidra Medical and Research Centre - a hospital with a focus on women’s and children’s health. The first sculpture is that of an egg being fertilised, and the last sculpture is that of an anatomically correct newborn. Between the two is the detailed development of the fetus, including a sculpture showing twins in the womb. The artwork is by world-renowned Damien Hirst, and was commissioned by Sheikha Mayassa Al Thani. GO: Visit www.visitqatar.qa for more information. • 20 FOR 2020 BARZAN TOWERS Built in the late 1800s 1800s and renovated in 1910 during the reign of Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani, the Barzan Towers have served a dual purpose as the location from which to ward off the possibility of another Ottoman invasion, and also a site for astronomical observations to study the moon during Ramadan. These beautiful towers dominate the desert skyline. For more than a century, they’ve provided a vantage point for both scanning the horizon for enemies and tracking the movements of the celestial world. The Barzan Towers compound comprises of two towers, a small mosque, and a reception room for guests. The towers were strategically placed near a rawdat, an ecosystem where rainwater collects and allows indigenous flora and fauna to grow. It’s possible to enter the tower and climb the internal staircase to reach the top level. The thickness of the walls and the small windows ensure a cool temperature inside the towers all year round. This is the spot to visit for an impressive look at a beautiful historical site. GO: Visit www.visitqatar.qa/ for more information. .SOUQ WAQIF In comparison to waterparks and rollercoasters, this is a way more laid-back option, but nonetheless an interesting one. Souq Waqif is one part of Doha that will export you back to the bustling markets of the old days. Small alleyways are lined with fabric and jewellery shops, gift and souvenir stores, and plenty of opportunities for window-shopping or picking up a rare find. Enjoy an authentic Middle Eastern meal or sit down for shisha with friends and family at one of the many great restaurants. Al Rawnaq is one of our favourite shops for a treasure trove of amazing craft supplies, costume jewellery and random bits and bobs, perfect for bringing that design you had in mind come to life! There are even stables for horses and camels here! A leisurely stroll or some serious bargain hunting can be done at Souq Waqif, either way, this traditional bazaar is perfect for spending a few hours away from the city’s skyscrapers. Some evenings there are special guards who patrol the souq on horses for a taste of traditional revelry. Haggle - don’t be shy to ask for a better price on what you want to purchase. Vendors expect and often accept reasonable offers, especially if you’re buying more than one item! GO: Visit www.souq-waqif-doha.com for more information.

A GOLD MINE IN KATARA

KATARA CULTURAL VILL AGE HAS SO MANY HIDDEN GEMS THAT YOU OFTEN MISS OUT ON SOME RARE DIAMONDS IN THE SEA OF THIS CULTURAL HUB. EVER SINCE FACT’S ANUSHAT Y TAIMUR KHAN MOVED TO DOHA IN 2015, KATARA WAS ALWAYS ONE PL ACE THAT SHE WANTED TO DISCOVER IN DEPTH…

T

rust me when I say that it is not an easy task to take in all the cultural wonders of Katara in one visit. It is like a puzzle that you more often than not get lost in but the best part is that you’ll come across some real finds along the way! AlBahie Auction House was no different than those instances that you simply miss out on something amazing that is in plain sight. Karak & Chapati has been an ultimate favourite for me and I could not believe it when I found the auction house right behind it. No exaggeration, you literally sit outside the auction house to sip some karak. A sign on top even reads Al Bahie but it is very easy to miss it as part of Katara’s decor. As part of Katara Cultural Village Foundation, AlBahie is located within Katara Cultural Village a place of cultural exchange for the arts in an exceptional location and dedicated to excellence. Stepping into the auction house is like being taken to a new world of art, culture and some good old memories. AlBahie Auction House engages our community of local and international collectors with monthly auctions, selling exhibitions and special events to nurture the discovery of our shared cultural history and to further the understanding and communication between different cultures. A first of its kind for the region, AlBahie is an essential stop in Doha’s dynamic art scene. When I went there, they had recently had the AlBahie Bazaar auction. A name that aptly applied to the bewitching antiques that they held, the Bazaar featured European-style furniture including marble-topped commodes, gilded French-style mirrors, an antique long case grandfather clock, along with a special selection of Indian miniature watercolors and Damascus steel swords. Even though I was a witness of all these items through pictures, I was so happy to see a few goods still around. It was like walking back in time where you get to experience your mother’s old crockery all over again, your grandmother asking you to not touch the clock that her father was gifted in the British era. The auction house offered alluring finds that I could not help but admire. If you think that the auction house only hosted certain things, let’s take you down some fascinating galleries here. Where the Bazaar was a wonderfully curated collection, the Art Gallery was an absolute breath taker. With options that would blow your mind, the genius behind AlBahie bring together an impressive collection of works by people all over the world, The auction house is a culmination of all things antiques that you 30

could possibly want in life which an ideal place to be at for collections, enthusiasts and curiosity seekers. Whether it is the Amber auction that you visit which features antique Kahram collection or the Fine Rugs and Carpet auction that can add a unique touch to your home, or you find yourself buying contemporary pieces from unique artists. The monthly auctions are going to lure you into the magic that they create at this magnificent place. ARTS OF ISLAMIC WORLD AT AL BAHIE Arts of the Islamic World auctions bring together unique objects including metalworks, ceramics, textiles, manuscripts, swords, daggers and works on paper produced in and a part of the distinct cultural and artistic tradition from the Middle East and the wider Islamic World. This exhibition truly shows how the Doha market has exceptional taste and that there is a need for such exclusivity in the region. A vast range of regional styles evolved under the diverse influences of empires like the Safavid, Mamluk, Ottoman, and Mughal, yet we see unifying elements in the use of surface decoration and ornamentation, recurring motifs like geometric and botanical patterns, as well as calligraphic inscriptions and dedications. MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART AT ALBAHIE With a focus on regional artists and artists of the Arab diaspora, AlBahie holds annual auctions dedicated to Modern and Contemporary Art. Local and international collectors have a growing interest in works produced by a culturally diverse group of artists reflecting a complex heritage and expressed in a variety of mediums. The world slowly has shown a keen interest in what the artists of the region have to offer. With Qatar’s growing art scene as well, this option by AlBahie proves to be one of my favourites.

estled amongst the exotic Kaafu Atoll and Embood Hoo Lagoon, taking pride of place on a remote island, lays a multi-island leisure and entertainment project, Crossroads Maldives. Accessible in just 15 minutes by speedboat from Velna International Airport in Malé, the destination boasts not one but two incredible resorts that provide travellers with individuality and excitement. HARD ROCK HOTEL MALDIVES First up, we check into the stunning Hard Rock Hotel for two nights. Our expectations were high as the brand carries such a strong reputation all over the world, and it’s safe to say that every expectation was exceeded. Stepping off the speedboat, we received a very warm welcome by the Hard Rock team. Welcome drinks and relaxed backdrops set the tone for our mini break. Hard Rock Hotel focuses on the little things, so you can be sure of a memorable and unique stay. Inspired by local culture, tropical architecture is infused with contemporary design features. Our favourite touch is the tailoring that can be done to suit every guest’s musical tastes. You can enjoy exclusive brand offerings and amenities including The Sound of Stay music programme, offering complimentary use of Fender guitars and amps, and Crosely record players for in-room jam sessions. It’s no surprise that there is a big focus on music here. After all, the brand is known for its oneof-a-kind blend of music, entertainment, iconic merchandise and authentic, American fare. Of course, accommodation is subtle but stunning. We stay in a gorgeous beach villa, which offers modern decor with breath-taking beach views. Each of the beach villas comes with its own private butler and 24-hour hotel services – adding a real sense of escape and luxury to the stay. Outside of the villa there is plenty to explore with an outdoor swimming pool at the front of the property, stateof-the-art fitness centre and the signature Rock Spa. Our days were planned perfectly with a mixture of both relaxing on sandy beaches, spa time and fitness and self-defence classes. Our favourite, however, was the music-infused yoga programme, aptly named Rock Om. It’s everything a yogi and a music-lover will appreciate – and if you’re into both then this is one activity that should be high up on your list of things to do here. The Rock Spa offered an extensive menu of treatments and massages to suit every wellbeing wish. We opted for the signature deluxe massage

in the Rock Spa. Traditional techniques are seamlessly combined to create a pampering experience which will leave you feeling relaxed and free of tension. Focus is placed on the reflexology points on the face, scalp and feet to help rebalance energy and deliver you with a renewed state of mind. It’s exactly what you need in the Maldives and was easily one of the highlights of the trip. The evenings at Hard Rock Hotel are certainly memorable; sunset drinks followed by delicious seafood and grilled meat bbq, and live music on the beach. We’d highly recommend taking a buggy or a short cycle to the iconic Hard Rock Cafè for more live entertainment. The stateof-the-art Café highlights Hard Rock’s new design style and latest technology. The vibrant Cafe features bright, eclectically designed interiors, offering 225 colourful seats and 13 pieces of iconic memorabilia that shines the spotlight on icons such as The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Imagine Dragons, along with other legendary artists. Hard Rock Cafe Maldives also features a unique chandelier comprised of 600 glass bottles, displayed above the bar. It’s truly a sight for sore eyes and we couldn’t stop instagramming it! The Maldives’ Cafe’s Rock Shop also offers musicinspired items as well as collectible Hard Rock Cafe merchandise. Fans can acquire exclusive Maldivesspecific merchandise and much-coveted signature pins at this retail location. It’s worth visiting alone just for this if you’re a devoted Hard Rock admirer. een instantly in the car’s design: a purist yet highly emotional exterior and interior visualise the GP genes more radically than ever before. The MINI John Cooper Works GP follows on from the likewise limited-edition John Cooper Works GP small series of 2013 and 2006.

THE EXTERIOR – EMOTIONALLY DESIGNED TOP-LEVEL PERFORMANCE The flat front section with its wide track, large front apron, flared wheel arches and a rear wing visible even from the front instantly conveys uncompromising dynamic performance. Classic MINI icons such as the elliptical headlights and the hexagonal radiator grille ensure a clear-cut sense of identity and high recognition value. At the same time, characteristic John Cooper Works elements such as the hood scoop in the bonnet and the hexagonal honeycomb grille with GP logo in the radiator grille underscore the sporty perception of the front. The side view of the MINI John Cooper Works GP reveals the sportiest MINI silhouette to date. The interplay between the narrowing window area and the rising shoulder line traces a wedge shape at the side that gives the impression of acceleration even when the car is stationary. Below this, voluminous surfaces form a powerful vehicle corpus. The large front apron and large roof spoiler give the side view maximum sporty flair as well as ensuring aerodynamic optimum performance. The exterior paint finish Racing Grey metallic alternates between light grey and blue-violet, creating a powerful sense of depth, while the roof and mirror caps are finished in Melting Silver. All typical chrome elements at the front, side and rear such as MINI logos, door handles, fuel filler cap, side scuttle and headlight surrounds are finished in high-gloss black in this small-scale series. RACING FEELING WITH STRIKING COLOUR AND CARBON FIBRE ELEMENTS Deliberate MINImalism in terms of form and colour focuses on technology, further emphasised by coloured accentuations in highgloss Chili Red and matt Rosso metallic. The use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibre optimises the power-to-weight ratio, while the highly optimised axle load distribution promises the hallmark MINI go-kart feeling. The absolute highlight in the side view are the attached wheel arch covers – so-called spats – which are made of carbon fibre. Elaborately hand-crafted recycled carbon fleece from the Landshut plant is used here. For the first time, the carbon fibre fabric is directly visible and showcased by means of black hexagon stitching. Meanwhile the numbering in the front spat shows the small-series production number. The 18” lightweight forged wheels in bi-colour design interpret the striking four-spoke theme of the MINI John Cooper Works GP in filigree style. It is the lightest 18” forged wheel ever to feature in the MINI, making a significant contribution to weight reduction. The rear section echoes the distinctive front and side design. The expressive roof spoiler is not only a statement in sporty styling: its shape also ensures optimum downforce and fits in perfectly with the geometry. The same goes for the air diffusers and air ducting surfaces in the apron. Prominently placed at the centre of the lower rear area, the classic double tailpipe embodies the John 52

decorative trim strip in the passenger area. Each decorative trim strip is unique and bears the vehicle’s limited-edition production number. Their GP-specific hexagonal structure echoes the surface structure of the shift paddles. In this way, MINI demonstrates a whole new dimension of how 3D printing can be integrated in the serial production process. The use of additive processes such as 3D printing not only raises customisation to a new level, it also enables entirely new forms of design style that were not previously possible using conventional tools. MINIMALISTIC REAR AREA The MINI John Cooper Works GP does not have a rear seat, as was the case in the predecessor models, with preference instead being given to achieving the lowest possible overall weight. The clear and tidy surfaces of the rear compartment also reflect a reduction to the essentials. The large “GP” lettering in the rear panel is achieved by the use of different grains and gives the interior a striking, novel accentuation. Behind the front seats, a red cross-brace generates a racing atmosphere. ✤

Cooper Works DNA. The bright stainless-steel double tailpipes are manufactured with the largest possible diameter and protrude powerfully and puristically from the diffuser. THE INTERIOR – PURE RACING STYLE The interior of the MINI John Cooper Works GP combines purist sporty flair with powerful colour accentuations. The dark colour and material concept creates a reduced, sporty basic mood, with high-quality, deliberately coloured details at selected points. In the driver area, the new free-standing digital instrument cluster on the steering column puts the relevant information in the driver’s field of vision as required by the situation at hand. 3D PRINTING IN DETAIL The latest production techniques such as 3D printing round off the special interior experience. A striking highlight from the driver’s perspective are the aluminium shift paddles on the sports steering wheel – manufactured using 3D printing. They echo the hexagonal theme from the exterior in the form of filigree breakthroughs. The shift paddles are a prominent element in the interior of the MINI John Cooper Works GP in terms of both appearance and new improved haptics and are featured in this form for the first time in a MINI. LIFESTYLE AND SPORTY STYLE: RM 33-02 By marrying the performance of a sports watch with the elegance of a round timepiece, Richard Mille has successfully merged two diametrically opposing characteristics.

O

verseen by Julien Boillat, the Richard Mille watch exteriors teams have reinterpreted the collection’s first ultra-thin round watch: the RM 033, which was introduced in 2011. ‘We believe it is both essential and logical to pay the same care and attention to evolving our collections as to the original creation of our models. In embodying the brand’s intended vision of extreme versatility, the RM 033 is a watch for everyday and any day. We have reinterpreted its aesthetics without disservice to the original version by accentuating its lines. Meanwhile, the exterior decoration, case and dial have been reworked to project a sportier vibe. The RM 33-02 thus achieves a delicate synthesis of so-called ‘lifestyle’ style and sporty style,’ shares Julien Boillat. The taut lines of the case combine the curves of a tonneau shape and the elegance of a round form with a subtle allusion to sporty style in the design of the hollows. This first round Carbon TPT® automatic watch exhibits a Carbon TPT® bezel and caseback alongside a satin-finished red gold caseband. The design of the strap prolongs that of the two indentations positioned unusually at 6 and 12 o’clock in a highly original way. These new vanishing lines also contribute to the dynamics of this already extremely bold case. The sporty, round, RM 33-02 timepiece is powered by the skeletonised RMXP1 calibre in grade-5 titanium. Regulated by a variable-inertia balance oscillating at 3 Hz, this calibre is wound by an off- centre platinum micro-rotor that considerably reduces the movement’s total thickness to 2.60 mm. Yet this thinness in no way inhibits the architectural expression intrinsic to the brand. The wet sandblasted and Titalyt®-treated 66

fact magazine

baseplate, the microblasted, stretched and satin-finished surfaces, and the anglage—all produced entirely by hand— accentuate volumes by playing with shadow and light thanks to the highly graphic skeletonisation. The exterior elements and hour-markers further add to this complex sense of depth and power. In 5N gold hour-markers on two rigid titanium rails fixed between the flange and the movement. The dial, which spans the entire calibre, accentuates the volumes while the typography of the oversized numerals adds a dynamic element to the watch’s easy readability. By juxtaposing soft gold with the strength of Carbon TPT®, and by combining the graphic codes of the lifestyle and sports spheres for both males and females, Richard Mille clearly communicates a desire to combine allegedly contradictory worlds within a single watch. The RM 33-02 Automatic is available as a limited edition of 140 timepieces. ✤

After admiring the artwork on the ground floor, the doors to the elevator opened to some precious words that I live by - from November to March that is; “I Love This City.” The wind swept my hair on the side and I took in all the freshness of the sea from my seat, admiring the breath-taking view from the restaurant. You’d forget for a few seconds where you are as you look at Katara from an eagle eye point of view; perfect, cluttered with a mix of locals and expats and simply gorgeous. I don’t think I was even ready to take in the artistic touch of this place. You know how you sometimes see a place and say, ‘oh, this is so me!’. Yes, I had that moment at every second in Boho Social. From the paintings, to the dessert station, the cane swings to the imported carpets layered on the floor, this was a reflection of a place that I can really relate to. The entire team welcomed me generously and I saw that within the few minutes that I had arrived, the restaurant started filling up. Pretty decent since it launched just a week earlier! Peacock inspired chairs, private dining rooms, paintings that make sure you do a double take, tiles and wallpapers that just zing up the entire setting, there was not a single thing out of place here; yet not a pattern that was followed either. GENIUS! When a place inspires a team to create, you really know the heart and soul that goes into the cuisine. As the Bohemian Falafel made me go ‘OH WOW’, I knew this was special. Falafels and I have a very complicated relationship where I simply don’t like them. That is until I had them with beetroot hummus, sprinkled with activated seeds and lemon salt tahini and was quickly converted to the holy grail of Arabic food. There was a chill in the air so the staff gave me a pashmina to make sure I was pampered in every way possible. Jenny, my plus one for the night, absolutely devoured the second serving of the soup as well. If there is one thing I love about food, it is the fact that it literally builds relationships. That night, Jenny and I were in sync of the excellence that this place offered. To be fair, she had already had a taste of the restaurant and to say that she came with me again after a day, yep, compliments showering for you, Boho! 70

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

If I have to pick and choose, I’d request for you to try the pumpkin soup, which will melt even the darkest soul. Exaggerating right here because there is no other way to emphasise on butternut squash soup that was added to this ‘deconstructed’ strategy. Make sure someone on the table orders a Feta Watermelon Island salad as well so you can dig into the juicy bites of perfection. If you’re planning on getting something to share for the table, I’d definitely recommend the Boho Short Ribs. Delving into the BBQ sauce of the creamy ribs which came off like cotton candy was one of the finest pleasures in life. A bite into this gooey goodness further made me believe that this was the ultimate place to be. As for the desserts, you really cannot choose one - you must have it all. You’re never going to be cringing due to the extra sweetness or asking for more flavour as the balanced dessert menu will be the answer to ever sweet-lover’s yearnings, like yours truly. Whether it’s the umbrellas with the cane, the fabulous décor of the restaurant that is in contrast to every nook or simply the relaxing vibe from the moment you step in, Boho Social is already proving itself and elevating the dining game. We can’t wait to see what amazing creations they come up with for foodies. Pro Tip: If you just want to get some drinks in, let your mixologist blow you away and ask him to make the magic happen his way. You’ll thank me later! ✤

OPA! LET’S GO GREEK...

While making her travel list for 2020, FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan found herself craving for authentic Greek cuisine and, naturally, headed down to Santorini at JW Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha for a delicious fix… fact magazine

73

• FOODIE CORNER

A

flight up to the first floor of JW Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha landed me in a part of Greece that I have been dreaming of for a while now. A picturesque Santorini welcomed me with a wall depicting those cherry trees and blue windows that are so synonymous with the destination. The entire restaurant was a reflection of all those Instagram pictures I have been clicking on lately. The room gave the vibe of a part of the island that everyone is bound to fall in love with. Colourful paintings mounted on the wall, the iconic blue and white buildings in every nook and corner, and, of course, food that I was looking forward to - my palate was indeed ready for this trip! JW Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha has its reputation for spoiling their guests rotten so when the tray of cold mezze came up, I knew I was in trouble. I was going to get the best in the lot but I needed to keep the focus on the entire meal that was going to be served. So, I chose a few classic Greek dishes; the htapodi, garides saganaki and tzatziki won the game for me as I dove into the pan-fried prawns and munched on the grilled octopus, dipped in fresh pita bread - a favourite for our table! The highlight would have to be the galatoboureko, a sinfully divine version of the thyme honey drizzled fresh and thick Greek yogurt. If you had to pick one dish, I’d advise you to go for the grilled Mediterranean Sea bass which oozed with flavour, accompanied by the perfect mashed potatoes and vegetables on the side. Even with the souvlaki on the table, which is a favourite for me since it is a lot like Arabic cuisine, the grilled meat had nothing on the sea bass. The grilled skin with the soft meat of the fish was simply exquisite - ah, the joy of discovering the finest cuisine! A cute little place that is an absolute must try, Santorini is an authentic concept and place in Doha that is bound to steal your heart. And just like the Greeks do, every dish will leave your taste buds blown away by fresh Mediterranean magic. ✤

THE FRYING SCOTSMAN

Every nation has that one dish which is synonymous with its country. As an Englishman, FACT’s Craig Ferriman can confidently say that, for the UK, it is most probably fish and chips. He takes a seat at The Frying Scotsman in the iconic Radisson Blu Hotel Doha to savour one of the best plates in town…

Y

ou may wonder why fish and chips is so special. I can’t really tell you why but nothing says home quite like the crispy batter and mushy peas that form part of this age-old offering. Living as an expat, you crave that sense of home yet hardly anywhere offers it. With possibly one exception, I can think of nowhere that serves up this taste of the British Isles until the Radisson Blu opened up a new restaurant in its hotel. They’ve called it the Frying Scotsman and that probably requires some explanation. It is a play on words. Almost a century ago, a new locomotive started transporting people from the capital of Scotland to the capital of England. It was called the Flying Scotsman and that’s because you could get from Edinburgh to London really fast. In this new family-friendly restaurant, you can taste a slice of Britain without ever stepping on a train, plane but maybe an automobile. Get yourself to the Radisson Blu and you’ll have what Brits rate as one of our top takeaway treats cooked and served as a home comfort. We started our visit with some classics in the form of onion rings, sizzling shrimp skewers and some sensational scallops. The thing you really go there for is the fish and the chips. The menu offers a choice of typically North Sea fish like cod and haddock as well as more local options like hammour and Nile perch. Naturally I had to choose cod and it tasted just how I remember it. The flakes of fish slipped apart like an accordion pulled apart at a folk dance. The batter has a hush-hush recipe which was a closely-guarded secret as good batter always is and though nobody would tell me, it was a secret worth keeping because it was commendable of the best a chip shop has to offer. It was crispy, it had flavour and it broke apart just right. A true connoisseur knows that mushy peas are a necessary accompaniment and they duly came although other side orders can be made like baked beans which my dining companion had. Tartare sauce comes as standard. I was amazed at just how authentic and accurate the kitchen got things right as non-native cooks but they deserve full credit for nailing it! The service was sharp, attentive and highly friendly. Waitresses wore 76

fact magazine

traditional tartan hats and skirts and a toy train set of a model Flying Scotsman careened around a miniature set above us while we ate. The thing that stood out was the price. This was affordably priced and not stupidly expensive despite being in a five-star venue. It felt very family-friendly and although we didn’t take the kids, it felt like the sort of place where we could have. Highly recommended! ✤

BBQ DELIGHT

With a job as busy as ours, our local editor Anushay Khan headed for date night with her friends to enjoy an evening of food, views and conversation that lasted a long time… fact magazine

J

ason Atherton was one of the first people I interviewed when I started this job earlier this year. Could you imagine landing an interview with a Michelin star chef within the first two months? I was ecstatic. Being a writer, I have noticed how I tend to hold things dear to my heart once I know the story behind it. When the Pearl Social was relaunched earlier this year, I got to know all about Jason and his passion for food, his commitment to his family and his way of honouring his legacy – a story made for the likes of me. When you know the love that goes into making the menu, you’re already prepared to fall in love with the cuisine. How the team convinced me to try their BBQ menu, I will never be able to remember. BBQ at Pearl Social? It somehow didn’t fit! I sat next to the soothing views of the sea and saw the Qanect Quartier light up at night. I absolutely love the European vibes that the Pearl gives and Marsa Malaz Kempinski sits in the center of it all; like a queen on a throne. As soon as the first item was served, I latched on to the food as a bee would latch on to honey. You’d think that the sides of the dish would add as an added benefit but the snow pea salad with its feta cheese and scrumptious dressing kept pulling me back for seconds (maybe thirds and fourths) as a filler between meals too. Haute cuisine meets avid haute foodie is how I would like to describe this dinner. I appreciate people who sometimes understand that there is absolutely no need for starters when it comes to meaty night. The night started with a big bang as hotel Aberdeen Angus striploin was served with its greens and parmesan cheese, accompanied by some horseradish sauce that only added to the juiciness of the tenderloins. Once I bit into this heavenly goodness, it took every ounce of me to stop myself and wait for the rest of the BBQ to be served. Level 1 – Pearl Social wins! One would think that being in a city like Doha would have me accustomed to the seafood around. Whereas it’s true that I do love my maki rolls, sometimes a girl just needs a break. When the monkfish and tiger prawns brochette was served, I whispered to my friend that she was going to have to eat on my behalf. I poured the provencal tomato sauce for the sake of the insta-life and simply took a single bite of the dish. Let’s just say that the two of us were fighting over the last piece because the magicians behind the counter just wanted to see who could resist these tempting bites from paradise. Served on skewers similar to the chicken and halloumi, both these delicacies had us roped in until we ate the dressings from the plates as well. The glazed honey drizzled upon the chicken skewer just added to the luscious twist of the yogurt on the dish. Mr Atherton’s newest menu was winning me over and we were only half way through. For me, the short rib bo took the trophy home. Have you ever imagined how the thing that you are attracted to the most usually has something to do with a memory? This particular dish took me back to Lahore, experiencing the best food I have had in my life; the street food of Punjab. I know this is a Michelin star chefs’ restaurant but trust me, this is the biggest compliment a foodie from Pakistan with a knack of twists and 80

spicy deliciousness could ever give anyone. The smoked rib, the dripping pickled mustard, the BBQ sauce wrapping itself in the dripping juices of the meat and the sauces that can only be described as euphoric folded into warm pita bread that balanced all the flavours perfectly – I had officially met my match at this place. When it comes to desserts, I usually tend to get excited. This was one of those times that I honestly couldn’t care about anything else. The menu has been perfected to the point that I believe the Pearl Social is leading the BBQ game this season. Innovative yet seasoned for local taste buds and simply marvellous for everyone. ✤

ou’d be surprised at the number of times that you’ll find me at Marriott Marquis City Centre Doha Hotel. You name a restaurant that I haven’t tried there or a burger that does not have my name on it, and I will give you a hundred riyals just to take me by surprise if something new comes up. So, it was simply fitting when a friend mentioned that her recent trip to Saray Spa had been phenomenal. Umm, Saray Spa? Apparently, it was the one place at this property that I hadn’t tried! I got myself booked in for a massage and simply asked the team to ‘take good care of me, I’m in trouble’. A busy weekend with work and family always stresses me out and this was the ideal fix that I could think of to forget the monster of a weekend I had ahead. I was a tad bit late to the appointment and was immediately called by the staff to double check if I was cancelling. Efficiency, check! I was introduced to Ayu, my therapist, who promised to make the next 90 minutes one of the best and most relaxing experiences of my life. Saray Spa is dimly lit, mostly by candles, and you will feel the peaceful environment make it easier for you to unwind. The rooms are cosy, the tranquil lounge has different teas that you can try and the experts at this place are going to treat you like you’re the only person in the world - the type of attention you need at a spa! I’ve been to a lot of spas across town and every single one has their own regime. At Saray Spa, Ayu dipped my feet in warm water, asked me to inhale the lavender oil in her hands, as she practiced a few yogi breathing techniques with me. Slowly talking to me in a calm voice, I omitted all the bad omens from my body and freshened my mind. With the light music that was in the background and Ayu’s expert guidance, I could literally imagine myself in a garden of fresh flowers, seeking jasmines as I felt the fresh air envelope my lungs. Imagination sure finds its way when you’re desperate for some time off! From the knots in the back to the soft strokes on my feet, Ayu relaxed me to the extent that I fell asleep almost immediately! I asked for the temperature to be adjusted according to my liking and since the tricky weather made it so unpredictable, I felt a little chill during the massage. Both times Ayu made adjustments to make sure I was comfortable and then prepped me for another quick nap. Huge shout out to the exemplary head massage she gave that made me wish I would not need to leave the massage bed. I love how this spa is a classic and you just simply know what you’re going in for. The service and team make sure that every one of your needs is catered to in a detailed form that you will fill in on arrival. So, next time you are longing to escape the hustle and bustle of Doha, Saray Spa is the place you need to book yourself into for guaranteed rejuvenation for the mind, body and soul. ✤

• EVENTS Q&A

ENTERTAINMENT EXCELS FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan caught up with Alessandro Gaffuri, Founder and CEO at CELS Group, the organisation responsible for Qatar Live and bringing some of the world’s biggest stars to Doha… This is the biggest celebrity entertainment line-up that Qatar is seeing. How does it feel to be the pioneer of such an event? It is an exciting opportunity for CELS Group to work with organisations such as Qatar Airways and Qatar National Tourism Council and to pioneer, QATAR LIVE together. Collectively we are able to ideate and bring these events to life and it is a very rewarding experience for myself and the team. Who and what has shaped who you are today? Since a young age, I have had an entrepreneurial spirit from selling home-made jewellery and items with my sister as a child, to founding CELS Group. I am always asking WHY and challenging the status quo in order to find better solutions for my clients and this drives me forward. You’ve been in this industry for 22 years! How have you kept up with the trends and being innovative in the field? I am curious by nature so I consume a lot of information from different sources. I also travel the world and network globally so I can keep my finger on the pulse of the industry. You have offices in Europe and GCC - how do you penetrate the two markets considering how different they are? The fundamentals of human emotions remain the same across regions and this is what CELS Group strives to engage with. Across all CELS Group’s business units, we engage with emotions as these are at the core of everything we do. So, although the regions are different, people’s emotions are not and this how we work. CELS Group believes in being unique, what is the one trend that the company has started and you now see being adapted worldwide? Creating favourite meeting places with a focus on community and a sense of belonging is something I have built my business around and I am now seeing industry focus on developing the same across various types of destinations. What are the future goals for CELS Group? CELS Group has recently acquired Retail Emotions, a festive decor company to expand its offering globally. Retail Emotions designs and produces bespoke decor element that can bring any destination to life. ✤
