n just a matter of a few days, we went from ‘Is it seriously still summer in Doha?’ to ‘Ooh winter coats, let’s go shopping for a new wardrobe’ – and, to be honest, I am HERE FOR IT. Yes, winter temperatures have officially set in and we’re all ready for the season of hot chapatti and piping cuppas of karak (ok, hot chocolate for some of you!). I’ve seen Doha blossom with food festivals and I have been the unfortunate target of the Keto life. But, there’s no way I was saying yes to a new diet change before sitting down to savour all the delicious dishes at some of the newest joints in town. After all, it would be a disservice to you guys if I didn’t indulge my way through these places – at least, that’s my version! I went from discovering the hip and happening Flat 77 (p83) that I have fallen in love with, and also found out that luxury dining can be fabulous and phenomenal when it comes to Panache (p91). It didn’t help that I was constantly going back and forth from food joints to The Venue (p95), my gym of choice for the month, because I didn’t know whether to be happy because I finally had a healthy routine or be happier because the most delicious desserts still waited at the end of every meal – first world problems y’all! Apart from all the food filled days, Doha was host to the Broken Wings musical and we truly haven’t experienced Khalil Gibran this way before. That’s where we were first introduced to Sonja Parker, who is the artist in focus this month (p44). We followed the Raven all the way to Brazil and even got to sit down with celebrity Chef Jenny Morris who made sure I laughed till there were tears streaming down my face (p80). Some people simply leave a lasting impression on you and I met SO many of such amazing personalities this month. As I currently sit and starve myself by ignoring all the desserts for the next few weeks, I send you all warm hugs and pray that the Frozen culture has not reached your home yet. I’ll see you in the New Year! ☺

QATARI STYLE BOOK LAUNCH Msheireb Museums, the four heritage houses and the cultural destination in Msheireb Downtown Doha, hosted the book launch of the first book by Ibrahim Al Jaidah titled ‘Qatari Style’. ‘QATARI STYLE’ IS A compilation of various interior spaces showcasing the warmth of Middle Eastern hospitality resonating with the sound of the local culture. Selected interiors celebrate the personal and local dispositions reflected in the spaces, but also the breadth of foreign influences on the local culture. The press conference and book launch saw Ibrahim Al Jaidah speaking to the audience about the inspiration behind the book and its structure. He also signed special copies for the attendees and took them on a tour through Msheireb Museums to give them examples of the concepts of architecture that the book highlights. As believers in the importance of knowledge sharing for sustainable development, Msheireb Museums supports initiatives and efforts that enrich cultural dialogue by shedding light on the past to understand the present and make the future a better place for all. Ibrahim Al Jaidah, author of the book and Group CEO of the Arab Engineering Bureau, said: “This is the first ever book that provides insights into unique Qatari places. Qatar is a small peninsula in the Arabian Gulf, but it was also a crossroad to many trading and migration routes, resulting in the development of 18

he portfolio of MGallery Hotels are designed with the sole intention of creating unique experiences and encouraging guests to immerse themselves in adventure, history, culture, romance and nature. Each location has its own distinct identity and you will become part of its story. Alwadi Hotel Doha overlooks the beautiful Souq Waqif which for centuries was the location for Bedouin to take their wool and animals to trade for daily necessities. As time passed the Souq started to become run down to the point where demolition was considered. Luckily, in 2004, it was decided to preserve this historical site so the entire market area has been renovated and restored according to the traditional Qatari architectural techniques. This inspired decision to regenerate means that this is probably the most authentic Souq in The Middle East and it provides not just a cultural experience but also a fascinating venue for shopping and dining. It came as no surprise to me when I entered the hotel that it was a blend of traditional Qatari heritage and high end luxury. The décor throughout mirrors the shades and tones of the Souq and the surrounding areas. Filigree fretwork window and wall features, dark wood , creams and earthy tones combined with a variety of textures and fabrics merge and flow from public spaces into the expansive suites. Elegance and decadence in equal amounts. Upon arrival I was escorted to my Souq Suite which was bright and airy and afforded superb views of the neighbouring Souq. The terrace was vast and provided me with ample outside space should I wish to soak up the neighbourhood in solitude. Various shades of cream combined with dark wood and crisp white sheets reflect the essence of Qatari style. The room was comfortable and homely with an injection of sumptuousness in the form of Bose sound system and Nespresso machine. The bathroom was no exception with a decadent rectangular bathtub and vast shower. The finer details such as towel art and petals placed elegantly on the signature king size MyBed are the first step to making memories here at the Alwadi Hotel. Dining at the hotel is a continuation of the theme of trade and empire. Le

The feature wall adorned with a map showing trade routes is fabulous. Miniature barrels and crates house fresh fruit and juices. The staff encourages guests to enjoy a detoxifying ‘shot’ each morning before proceeding with their breakfast experience. The menu boasts a series of set breakfasts and bespoke international specialties. You may wish to embark on your day of business or leisure with a full Arabic, French or English Breakfast. Eggs Benedict is offered in 5 different forms. The ‘Hearty Me’ with avocado and grilled asparagus served on brown bread with citrus sauce allows you to indulge but not overly. The ‘Royal’ with smoked salmon so delicate that it literally melts in the mouth was a mouthful of indulgence. Traditional Qatari dishes such as Saj and Balaleet are offered alongside Pancakes, French Toast and Porridge. Le Colonial transforms breakfast into a dining experience beyond anything I have experienced before. The restaurants at Alwadi literally flow seamlessly into one another through the connecting stairwell. La Sofra takes inspiration from the Ottoman and Turkish worlds. In modern Turkish language ‘sofra’ means a table prepared or set for eating a meal. This is reflected in the menu whereas the décor is more reminiscent of an Asian imperial dining room, once again reflecting colonial links. Intimate terraces can be accessed from the main restaurant. Cold Mezze including an impressive array of Hummus, Tabbouleh and Fattoush may tempt you alongside tantalising regional specialties such as Labneh Salad or Chicken Liver with pomegranate molasses. Ordering my main course was nothing short of a dilemma. Grilled meats and seafood can be enjoyed in the form of ‘Grand Platters’ ensuring diners sample a selection of the best seared morsels on offer. Middle East’s most decadent dishes. Presentation was a revelation and more Michelin Star than traditional Persian. The selection of Hummus adorned with ‘jewels’ and garnishes exemplified this. In addition to the terrace area and pool the hotel boasts a state-of-theart M|FIT gym and M|SPA. The ambience is traditional and serene and fragranced with Shifa Aromas. The treatments offered will no doubt enhance your sense of well-being and leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated just as the expertly delivered full body massage did for me. Whether you then choose to explore the surrounding cultural delights or cool off in the rooftop pool a visit to this particular spa will certainly allow for more unique memories. The hotel isn’t just the perfect base for families or couples immersing themselves in culture but also for those wishing to mix business with pleasure. Hi Sonja! You’re a musical child of the world who has reached extraordinary heights with your talent which city were you most excited to play in? It is a very difficult question since every city, every place I performed has a special meaning. I remember very fondly Sydney, London, NYC, Tokyo, Florence, Vienna and of course, when I performed for the public opening of the Katara Opera House in Doha. One memory that stands out would be of Karachi, Pakistan. I will never forget that performance because I performed blindfolded for the charity gala “Seeing is Believing” for Standard Chartered Bank’s 150-year anniversary. It was to raise funds for the avoidable blindness and it was so special and humbling. We’ve experienced you play live and the way you become a part of the melody is absolutely breathtaking. How did you choose the piano as your instrument? I did not choose the piano; the piano came to me! It was the most natural thing in the house since my mother was the director of a music school. Describe your best performance to date. What made it special for you?

A long time ago, in Salzburg at the Mozarteum Grosser Saal, I was playing with a very famous piano professor. I really lost myself in the music – I was playing (Brahms Op.76) and I totally forgot about everything. I was free, I was the music itself and after it was done, for a short while I didn’t know where I was. It was a transcendental experience which was so unbelievable. The audience felt what I was feeling and it really then was pure magic. By the end of it everyone was in tears – such a surreal moment. We’re sure it takes hours of practice for a seasoned player like you to create such magic. Has it been difficult getting to the point where you are today? There is still so much to do, so much to learn, I don’t think I’ve done so much honestly. It’s been a struggle to juggle between my job and the family, and I have to say it hasn’t been easy especially since my son, Noah, was born four years ago. But all of it can enhance my music in a positive way! Tell us about your favourite melody and why you love to play it… Also, a very difficult question since there are many of them! I love Rachmaninoff, Scriabin (both Russian) fact magazine

Well, Qatar is a very special place and my family and I call it home. But it is different than European countries that have been exposed to the classical music culture since a long time. It is a bit challenging to put a concert programme together where I am artistically satisfied as a musician and also, which is not too difficult for the audience to enjoy here. In Qatar, there hasn’t been a very long tradition of classical music and I have been trying to spread this music as much as I can. But it’s a challenge sometimes and I consider myself as an ambassador of music with the aim of making everyone enjoy music! I believe in this unbelievable power of music. I felt an instant connection with you at your last performance and just watching you play was a mesmerising moment. Do you think this is the charm behind your success? I am not sure, but whenever, wherever, for whomever I perform, I always try to fall into the arms of music. I try to identify myself with the music I play. When the audience can feel what I feel in that moment, that’s the moment when magic is created. It is beyond every description because words can’t describe the feeling. I am pretty good at it and I consider myself lucky. I love what I do, and there is so much to give, share and learn from performing and this exchange that happens on stage with the audience! ✤

y journey with Qatar Airways began as soon as I arrived at the airport. Business class check-ins are smooth, but they’ve made it even better. Doha airport is one of the best airports in the world, more so when you’re flying with the flag carrier - it felt like I walked into a 5-star

hotel here! The flight to São Paulo from Doha is approximately 15 hours and believe me when I say that’s a loooong haul. I got on the plane and was pleasantly surprised by the Q Suite. It’s like a combination of first class and business, in one private cabin. From the food and beverage menu to the 2000 well-curated films for your inflight entertainment, I mean, I knew I was going to enjoy this flight to Brazil. There’s also a vast region of Atlantic Forest along the Atlantic coast, as well as an expanse of wetland extending into the Mato Grosso. Shopping culture is booming in Brazil, with high-quality and low-priced items available in the market. High-end shopping malls are spread around the country, while local markets offer more traditional items. Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, is a vibrant urban hub, a cultural centre and a foodie’s paradise. You’ll find that there are lots of things to like about this city. Whether it’s the entertainment scene, the museums or the opportunities to explore the culture, the city has plenty to offer.

São Paulo is a cultural melting pot, and where there are many cultures, there are many good places to eat. The city’s food scene is influenced by Italian, Lebanese, Portuguese, and Japanese immigrants who all call São Paulo home. There’s everything from fine dining (it was one of the two cities where the Michelin Guide launched its Brazil edition in 2016), to street food, to the magnificent Mercado Municipal. It’d be nearly impossible to eat all the way through São Paulo, but you could do worse than starting at these top food spots, broken down by neighborhood. 48

Bráz Pizzaria — Partly due to São Paulo’s Italian immigrant population, partly due to the fact that pizza is nearly everyone’s favorite food group, the city is loaded with pizzerias. Bráz is one you don’t want to pass by without trying. This particular branch of the small chain is located on Rua Vupabussu, by the Empório Alto dos Pinheiros. It has a slightly higher price tag, but it’s worth it. You also can’t miss its younger sibling, Bráz Elettrica, located on Rua dos Pinheiros. Go for the lunch deal that includes a pizza, salad, and drink for around US$7.50. Meats — Meats delivers on its namesake. It has the city’s best burger, a bold claim in a city with literally hundreds of burger restaurants. Don’t miss the lunch deal that runs from Monday through Thursday, which includes a burger, a drink, and chips or onion rings for around US$7.50. Menu favorites include the classic cheeseburger with extra bacon, the Po Po Pó chicken burger, and the Greenator. The chicken wings are also spectacular, and are a good option if you’re not in a burger mood. Santa Clara — If it’s traditional Brazilian cuisine you’re looking for, look no further than Santa Clara, which is on Rua dos Pinheiros and set back slightly from the pavement in a yellow house. It’s selfserve in that you choose what you want and then weigh your plate to find out the price. This restaurant is particularly good on Wednesdays and Saturdays when feijoada (classic Brazilian bean and meat stew) is served. Santa Clara is only open at lunchtime. fact magazine

Frida & Mina — Frida & Mina is an ice cream shop on Rua Joaquim Antunes and is immensely popular with locals and tourists alike. The ice cream is all natural and absolutely delicious. On hot days, expect to find long lines that wrap around the corner. Neighbourhood: Vila Madalena Tuju — In 2018, Tuju got its second Michelin star, and it’s easy to see why. Head chef Ivan Ralston uses local ingredients for an upscale, fine dining take on the food available in Brazil. As you would expect, prices are higher here, but the quality of the food makes the money paid completely worth it. Banana Verde — Banana Verde is a haven for vegetarians and vegans. The restaurant focuses on organic produce for an entirely meat-free menu using traditional flavors from the state of Minas Gerais. Even the more ardent carnivores will find something they enjoy. Saj — Saj has become hugely popular in São Paulo, and the chain now has four restaurants across the city. Serving Middle Eastern food in a cozy setting, this restaurant is great for a relaxed dinner with friends. The homemade Lebanese flatbread is fresh and delicious, as is everything else on the menu. Neighbourhood: Liberdade Tanka — Tanka is more of a buffet-style restaurant, and is seen as one of the best sushi joints in the neighborhood. Make sure to go hungry, as you pay for all you can eat — and you’re going to want to eat a lot. It has a slightly high price, but as long as you make the most of the buffet, you’ll be getting your money’s worth. Tia Tia — Tia Tia is the type of restaurant that’s easy to miss, but when you venture inside, you’re fed with some of the best food you’ve ever had. Despite the uninspiring decor, this restaurant serves 50

incredible Japanese food, and it’s worth making the trip to Liberdade just to go here. Try one of the sushi boats with a side of pork gyozas and thank us later. Neighbourhood: Bixiga Cantina C…Que Sabe! — C…Que Sabe! is a traditional Italian restaurant and a can’t-miss sit-down spot for fresh pasta in São Paulo. All of the pastas are made on site, which is the same amount of care the chefs put into every dish. Expect to enjoy a lively atmosphere while you eat with the occasional live Italian band. Pizzaria Speranza — A favorite of many top 10 São Paulo pizzeria lists, Speranza is one of the oldest traditional pizza spots in the city and was the first to make an Italy-approved classic Neapolitan margherita pie. If on the off chance you’re not feeling pizza, there’s also the tortano, a traditional Neapolitan bread filled with sausage. Neighbourhood: Jardins Varanda — Varanda is the top steakhouse in São Paulo, without a doubt. Opened in 1996, Varanda serves hand-selected cuts of meat that are cooked just right, with a wildly attentive wait staff catering to your every need. And, of course, what’s a great steak without great wine? Varanda is well stocked on that front, too. You’re going to pay for it, but the prices are high for a reason. Seen — Seen is part fancy place, part fine dining steak and seafood restaurant, and part sushi spot. Chef William Ribeiro uses the highest quality organic ingredients and well-sourced proteins. If you don’t have time for the full dining experience, stop by the specoa; beverage area and be treated to stunning views of the São Paulo skyline while you sip on a time-tested classic or one of Seen’s original drinks. Nakka — Nakka is a Japanese restaurant that balances traditional

and contemporary cuisine. The main event here is specialty sushi, but there are a few non-fish items on the menu as well. It’s the type of place where you can order a standard tuna roll right alongside sea urchin with quail egg. An eight-page special beverage menu makes sure you won’t go thirsty. FASHION AND SHOPPING: Not only does Brazil already possesses a monopoly on all the good things in life – beaches, sunshine, carnival, caipirinha – let’s not forget, they also hosted two of the biggest sporting events on the planet, the 2014 Fifa World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. And as one of the world’s fastest-emerging economies, with a current GDP annual growth rate of 5%, the country is also becoming a super power. So it’s little wonder that as Brazil’s national confidence swells, its fashion scene does too, thanks in no small part to its two major catwalk events: São Paulo fashion week (SPFW) and Fashion Rio. he talented, singer, songwriter and producer has long been a friend of the brand, sporting many of its iconic timepieces. And when Richard Mille suggested they work together on the first watch to bear his name, Pharrell looked deep into his childhood for inspiration. “I’ve always been fascinated by looking up at the sky,” Pharrell says. “What could be more inspiring than all that ever was and all that ever will be? Space, before your eyes. It’s yours to see. It was here before the earth, before this solar system. It’ll be here after us and nothing’s more meaningful than that,” he continues. “When I look up at the sky, I’m looking at God. I feel part of so many different parts of a whole. This is the Alpha and the Omega.” The word Pharrell uses to describe his music is ‘subversive.’ His artistic world is all about shifting focus, looking for new perspectives in unexpected partnerships. “If it’s not subversive, it’s just plain,” he says. “We need things to “pop” in this world. As humans, we spend our time looking out at the cosmos. The ‘pop’ on the RM 52-05 comes from totally changing our perspective a full 180°. It’s the moment we realise, staring at the watch’s face, that what we are peering at, through the vastness of space is ... ourselves. Earth as seen from Mars. A distant and beautiful reflection trapped in the helmet of an astronaut.” But how to capture this sheer vastness within the confines of a watch face? The RM 52-05 rises to this artistic and technical challenge with the kind of ground-breaking ideas devotees of the brand expect from the Richard Mille Creative Development team. High-tech materials handled in miniature, using state of the art technology and honed by the partnership of an engraver, an enameller and a painter.

The technical innovations of the RM 52-05 tourbillon calibre are mind-bendingly innovative. Equivalent to a space shuttle, the baseplate that carries the movement is machined of grade 5 titanium through which it is possible to glimpse the grade 5 titanium bridges, skeletonised to evoke rocket launch platforms. It features large inserts in dazzling blue aventurine glass that evoke outer space and the confines of the universe with all its stars. The astronaut’s helmet is sculpted in grade 5 titanium, hand painted using indestructible paint to hint at all-pervading timelessness. As for the Red Planet itself, only red gold could bring to life its unmistakable hues. We are drawn into the dramatic Valles Marineris, named for the Mariner 9 Probe, humanity’s first envoy to our distant neighbour. The engraving captures the overpowering rock face, rising a daunting 7 kilometres above the russet sandscapes below. For this it was necessary to achieve multiple colour changes in the enamel. Unlike traditional grand feu enamels, obtained by adding different pigments, the orange to red and blue to black gradients were made by superimposing layers and increasing the number of firings at 850 °C. We become the astronaut. In the helmet, two white gold elements containing a black sapphire and two diamonds evoke the floodlights that light up our immediate surroundings. Against the skin, we feel the spacesuit composed of grade 5 titanium, painted white using an airbrush. Other innovations complete this cosmic timepiece. The brown Cermet combines the lightness of titanium with the hardness of a ceramic. It consists of a metallic zirconium matrix associated with high- performance ceramic that gives the material its incredible brown hue with metallic reflections. The caseband is made of Carbon TPT, well known in the field of aerospace. The hands and bridges on the back of the model have been skeletonised to evoke rocket launch platforms or satellite arms. The crown is based on the design of a rocket capsule. Even the rubber surrounding it sports the distinctive profile of a Martian rover tyre. Only a very small crew of astronauts will be on board this unique mission to Mars. The RM 52-05 Tourbillon Pharrell Williams will be produced in an edition of 30 pieces. The little boy who grew up watching Star Trek in Virginia Beach is more than excited to be piloting the expedition... “In every aspect of my work, I always look for something different, something new,” Pharrell explains. “Working with Richard Mille provided an opportunity to go where no one else has ever gone before. Mars, for instance. Creating is about shifting the perspective from which we look at things, that’s really the only difference, and with the RM 52-05, we’ve looked at Mars from a different angle, an unexpected first-person point of view. “In doing so, we’re breaking the mould. We have the best timekeeper in the world. We have Mars. And we have an AfricanAmerican man from Virginia, all connected,” he adds. ✤

Welcome back to Doha! Qatar seems to absolutely love you and rightly so! What is the new/different experience that you take away from this city? Doha has become so modern now. I see that there is a different mindset here now, especially amongst the women here, which is absolutely amazing to experience. I feel like women here are becoming more empowered and it is delightful to see women being celebrated this way. You’ve got a list of royals and celebrities that you’ve cooked for - which was your favourite menu to create and for who? I’ve cooked for a lot of presidents, Prince Charles, and the list can go on. For me, it was an absolute pleasure to cook for President Thabo Mbeki because he is real and has his feet on the ground, and he simply eats beautiful, plain, unadulterated good wholesome food. So, I remember that this one time I was serving him and I was in the kitchen, watching him through a screen and that man was relishing every single thing on the plate. I remember that he had had a wobbly experience from the food in Japan on their recent trip and didn’t trust me as much to begin with. But once they started eating, it was something to see them enjoy the food so much! When you say you give a ‘modern twist’ to your traditional dishes, what is the ‘magic ingredient’ you incline towards the most? And how has it been catering to the locals of Doha with your cuisine? I do not like food that is over engineered and touched a thousand times to manipulated to suit the western palette. I love good creative food, but if I am in a country, I need to be able to relate to those that I am catering to. Food has to be creative and if there is one thing that I like to do every time that I travel, it is to embrace the culture of the country that I am in. My approach towards different people is to look at what are the ingredients and spices that a particular region is used to. I take their traditional elements and just mix it with a new format. So, it’s all about giving them back what they already know and recognize but just with my twist to it. The locals have been so acceptive of the dishes that I experiment with that my experience with Doha has been incredible. 80

Judging, radio, television - you’re a media guru! How do you unwind on a typical day off? I love to cook for my family! Technology has allowed me to practice everything so easily that I just send a WhatsApp to my husband once I’m wrapping up work to get everything ready on the table when I get home so that I can come back and cook for him. I’m a nurturer, it comes from within. I come from a family where we were not served food without a minimum of three dishes on the table. I do the same thing today; I simply cook a number of dishes and decorate the entire table! I want to see everything that I make, I love to feel the textures, look at the colours and then cook – it is so soothing for me to do this. It’s just a way of showing love to my family. We know that your love for cooking comes from your parents. Who is the one chef you look up to or are inspired by? Reza Muhammed and Rick Stein are the two people that I absolutely love. Reza, who is an Indian chef, and I have been good friends for over 16 years now, during which we even had a cooking show together! I admire how knowledgeable and humble he is. This is one guy who I truly believe deserves to be a diva but he most certainly is not. Everything that

he does, he does it himself and I have massive respect for that. I’ve grown up with the flavour of Indian cuisine where I learned everything from my neighbours and community and I feel like Reza is just so good at what he does! Rick is an English chef who reminds me of myself actually. His passion comes first which is all about good, wholesome ingredients. He celebrates what is around him and he gives credit to people who strive and work hard. It doesn’t even matter if it is another chef or not, he is all about being genuine. And that is what I personally like in people. I cannot stand superficial people and I only surround myself with real people – and Rick Stein is one of them. These are two people that I have immense respect for. They have absolutely no ego and their feet are firmly in the ground. They’re just good people who love their food very passionately. Even though you got your name ‘The Giggling Gourmet’ from radio, we just love your memes on social media! How do you feel the digital age has given exposure to your business? Social media is an incredible thing! Everything in instant now; in the good and bad sense. I have my radio show which also serves this purpose but with the digital age, I can instantly interact with people and I love that. ✤ fact magazine

JUST LIKE HOME With the café scene booming in Doha, FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan was intrigued by the concept of Flat 77 – the latest addition to a thriving part of foodie lifestyle in the city. This place has our attention… fact magazine

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT Welcome home’ is the greeting you get when you enter the doors at Flat 77; a cosy little place to haul up on a winter’s day, where the concept of being your home away from home helps visitors to fit right in. And home is what it truly is. A blue door, that reminds me of Mykonos, welcomes you to a room full of all the things you actually need. This cute little cafe is divided into sections for you to enjoy and, trust me, you’re going to have a hard time choosing every single time you walk into this venue. A neon sign awaits you ‘There’s no place like 77’, with magazines spread in front of it and paintings set up for sale, all done by local artists. Adding a very personal touch, every table and area is separate, giving you the privacy, you need. Now you can come here with a book and sink into the sofas or get together for a catch up in a place that is as good as your own home. If alone time is what you crave then this place can be your Netflix spot too. Yep, they weren’t kidding when they said it’s your home! A media room is available where you can book yourself some time for gaming night or even a movie night with your buddies – they take the whole Netflix thing up a notch here! If you really don’t want any of these and just need a work space to hit those deadlines in (like yours truly) just step on the right side of the room, plug your laptop in, and slip into one of the huge chairs that are calling out for your comfort, and get started. There are a number of board games on the other side of the room - you can simply order yourself milk and cookies and get the competition going! You might think that it’s really an overrated thing to add in a menu but the minute you bite into those cookies and the chocolate melts in your mouth, making you believe that nirvana can be achieved by simply having this, you might just change your mind. Speaking of the menu, there is not a single item on it that you’d say isn’t perfect. The oozing Nutella in the French Toast, the Club Sandwich that serves as the ideal snack, the baith with tmath baitna that is the perfect fit for breakfast or the delectable Parkview Eggs that you just simply need in your life - you’ve got yourself a perfect fit for all those homely needs. And what says home like someone bringing all the goods in life to you? The service is impeccable. A truly new concept around town that keeps taking me back to the golden days of being comfortable in your PJs, eating M’n’M’s from a jar, sitting in a comfortable room and having all the things you need in life, Flat 77 cafe is my favourite for the month. A feeling of finding a place like home is depicted in a cute little place and if you walk in, you’re most likely going to find me sitting there. ✤ 84

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT

Luxury takes a new meaning as FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan found out the latest buzz of the season and got to experience new heights of dining… literally! fact magazine

hen I was invited to have ‘dinner in the sky’, I honestly imagined that there was a new top floor somewhere in Doha which had a table with my name on it. Not in my wildest imagination did I think that a table of 15+ people will be taken on a 40-metre flight into the sky as they bask in the glory of the ever-so beautiful Doha on what turned out to be more than an ordinary Sunday afternoon. If there is one thing that is the talk of the town, it is this collaboration between InterContinental Doha & Events in the Sky company. I remember this concept first coming to Doha sometime in 2016 at the Qatar International Food Festival and could never have imagined in my wildest dreams that I would actually have the guts to try it one day. It seemed like an exclusively far-fetched idea that has now become my reality. I’m still at a high (this is literally making me laugh-out-loud) from the fantastic experience I just had, and I feel like a school-girl talking about her first crush. That might as well be the situation. There were so many questions buzzing in my head as I approached the venue and I just wanted answers then and there. It seemed like this is the normal reaction that people have to this ‘situation’. I was questioning my own judgement at this point till I met Hassan, my safety guide for the next meal. He assured us that we’re in the right hands, that this has been a tried and tested method and he couldn’t wait for us to experience it. So, when they asked us to choose a seat on the table, I was smart enough to sit right in front of Hassan – I wasn’t going to risk anything at this point! We were tightly strapped in our chairs, a murmur of excitement as the first lot of us were smoothly lifted in the sky. At this point, I expected my heart to drop in my stomach in what I had imagined to be a roller coaster ride and the relief I felt as we were gradually lifted up without any abrupt movement cannot be described. The key was not to look at the ground and to just take in this phenomenal beauty that Doha was on this day. The sun gradually started to set down, the wind messed up my hair and within 10 minutes I had forgotten about that Instagram life as I simply sat to appreciate the infrastructure of Doha. I had truly never seen the magnificence of the carefully articulated plan till I was 40 feet above the ground that I am oh-so-used to cribbing on. On one side of the city the newly formed Lusail skyline came together like a jigsaw puzzle of the country while the West bay skyline shone a bit further away like glasses set on a table, something you’d expect in a TV show of royals. The land, sea and us in the sky came together like poetry and I just sat there, in awe

of the beauty that I was surrounded in. The city that I have taken for granted swept me away, literally and figuratively, and for the first time in these five years, I experienced a sunset that is the highlight of my time in Qatar. As the sun set and the food was served, it was an experience of the senses coming together. A three-course meal was served as we enjoyed the dynamic views and as life went on, I felt like I was blissfully stuck in that moment, able to devour the smoothest lamb shank, in one of the greatest treats of life. Stella, our server on this ‘flight’ deserves all the credit in the world for calming us down with her jokes and splendid service. She snuck me an extra piece of the bread and for that, I will always be thankful. Sometimes the tiniest things make the most perfect moment and a second serving of the bread that is infused with cheese and tomato certainly did the trick. As the city lit up and the hues of the twilight announced our departure, we

were all left mesmerised. It was a moment of epiphany for a bunch of us who simply sat there, strapped in luxury, with a team of experts who promised security and a splendid time, and we couldn’t help and count our lucky stars to be able to actually experience this. To say that this combination is anything less than genius would be unfair. InterContinental is home to the welldeserved FACT dining award for the Best Restaurant of 2019 and to pair it with an idea as grand as Events in the Sky is something only a mastermind can think of. So, readers, let me close my review by saying: thank you for being here for us so we can bring these life changing experiences for you. ✤

LUXURY EATS Are you on the lookout for a variety of food that is both quality and filling? We came across Panache and immediately booked a table for two. The foodie in FACT’s Anushay Taimur Khan prayed for a miracle for this place to offer more than just burgers or coffee… and they were truly answered. fact magazine

anache gives very elegant vibes from the moment you step in. Mimicking the colours of its logo, pastel green walls, white and gold interior, cutlery that matches the entire setup – all of it gave a luxurious vibe to the restaurant. Since it was raining that day, I decided that I wanted the best view in the room; I sat next to the window, watching the skyline from the centre. The delicate table arrangement simply fit into the scenario, making it the best spot for taking pictures – because if we don’t Instagram it, did it really happen? The menu had a variety of dishes, some of which the manager promised I will never have had in Doha, and actually fit into a very reasonable price range, considering the prime location and the chic look of the restaurant. I settled for a mix of ‘safe’ options and a couple of new things to try from three different courses and sat for the most difficult part of it; the wait for the food. I had just started sipping on my mocktail (which totally gave Hawaiian feels) when the starters got served – impressive timing, especially if you’re starving and already fretting over the timing of your next event! The first bite of Panache salad had me say ‘ahhhh’ as I felt like the weight of the foodie world was lifted off my shoulders. Something new and this fantastic? YES, PLEASE! King fish mixed with the creamiest mayonnaise-based sauce, tossed in with pickled onions and light salad; probably the first time I’d ever say that it was a salad of everyone’s dreams. I was hardly over this dish when the sizzling spicy seabass tempura was served on a plate of shredded crackers, a sight that already made your taste buds jump. So, the second dish looked fabulous as well – who were these people and why didn’t I know about this magical kingdom before? The hardest choice for me was ordering the harees pancake because even when I write the name, it just sounds peculiar. So, a traditional local dish merged with a very panache style of cooking was served with a fried flat harees pancake, pulled lamb, spicy onions and some light greens. Three words: this was love. An apparent favourite of the locals, and I could tell why, the harees pancake was a soft blend of spices, fitting right into the ‘modern take’ of the experimental cooking style that Panache has. For me, the pulled beef was not the ‘must-have’ of the dish but I do get the culmination of the two for the taste that it was giving. The lamb neck stew had my name written all over it and I did not even need to think twice before making sure it was served immediately. I was ‘warned’ that it was a tad bit sweet but when is stew not the perfect fusion of just that? When a dish that sort of looked like a local dish, the machboos, was served, I was made to double check my order – umm, what? Did it taste like a machboos? A big no. The lamb stew had a distinct taste of its own, where the tuhchin harmonised with the entire dish so well that a second serving was the only choice to make this experience perfect. As much as I have loved my share of desserts over the years, I was not really sure about my choices for the night. The Tiramisu came highly recommended from the staff, and I really could not think of the ways this dessert was over-done but I still ordered it. The Moroccan milk bastilla was something that 92

I had not tried in Doha so that was the only dessert that I had my eyes on. I was not expecting a crunchy pastry topped with cream and honey to show up on the table. Toasted almonds on top and the orange milk pudding used to enhance the flavour made this one of my favourite new finds in Doha. I couldn’t see how an ordinary tiramisu cake could top that. If only the cake had been ordinary. Dipped in chocolate milk and decorated with rich chocolate mascarpone and the creamiest chocolate ganache, the tiramisu cake won my heart. Brazillian coffee was poured on it and the balance of the two different ingredients simply made me believe that my fairy Godmother had come to bless me. When a dessert that has this much ganache does not make you go on a guilt trip, that’s when you know that the chefs have nailed it. To be simple, my verdict is very to the point; you have to come here at least once and give it a shot. Since the restaurant hosts international cuisine and has a very distinct style to it, I believe almost everyone is bound to find something for themselves on the menu. Classy and delicious; a combination that we love! ✤

ou’ve all known me long enough to understand the battle that I have with my love for food and my hope of staying in shape; food has always won. The eight kilos that I have gained since I was first introduced to you all are nothing less than the foodie in me giving herself a thumbs up. I can’t help it – if you loved food as much as I do and if you live in a city like Doha that is constantly trying to UP its culinary game, what can a girl do? Well, Yana certainly knew what a girl could do. The first day that I walked into The Venue, I simply thought ‘who in the world can stay focused with a view like this?’ You’d think that getting a personal trainer would make my lazy self a bit ashamed but I just thought about how I would be running off from this place within days. You know how we all pay for gym memberships and simply don’t go? I thought this would be one of those things until I stepped inside the place and was introduced to Yana, my personal instructor. A racetrack lit with lights instantly served as a mood booster as I got inspired by the entire ambience of the place. Private lockers, sauna and steam rooms, staff that welcomed you with the biggest smile – the first few minutes made me feel like I would actually be able to brave through the entire month. Then, Yana happened. After two and a half weeks, I can tell you how superb she is but in those first 10 minutes that she made me walk on the treadmill at a 4.5 gradient, I couldn’t have hated any other person more. of the first 20 minutes of the session included two things: my guilt for letting myself get to the point where this was painful and the fact that Yana was not backing down no matter how much I pretended to cry. It wasn’t till the end of the agonising session when I was almost about to throw up that I saw that she had been taking baby steps with me all along. Like an adult teaching a child to cycle for the first time, Yana stayed close so I would maintain my posture, she lessened my sets so I would not over exert myself and when I complained about being nauseous, she ran to make me a honey-infused drink to bring up my sugar levels. After cutting down the last set just to make sure that I was okay, I happily limped away from her and into the arms of Mary-Jane. My knight in shining armour, Mary-Jane was my go-to person at the spa, every day, after my sessions. The spa (YES!) is equipped with topof-the-line products with a number of services that I made use of every other day – manicures, facials, massages, you name it! From the first massage that made me forget about the pain to the facial that immediately gave me the glow, I could be found at this facility more than anywhere else. That’s what I love about The Venue. It’s not just a gym or a fitness hub – it is excellence offered in every way a woman could possibly ask for. A spa to pamper you through the day, a pool to help you cool down, the cream of personal trainers, a lounge next to the juice bar for a quick catch up with friends, or hiding from Yana in my case, along with a view that motivates you all the more. The entire essence of the place has a luxurious feel to it and the

fact that you overlook the city as you work out is an added bonus. The personalised training that I am currently experiencing is mind-blowing. My first assessment was so horrifying that I promised myself to push through the toughest time. As I made excuses and tried getting out of class, my trainer proved to be more determined and matched my workout according to my energy level. How do I describe The Venue in a sentence?
