ow much are you into this cooler weather? Yes, I did just ask about the weather. But, hey, that’s only because this time of year holds more adventure, activity and allround outdoor fun that we all love. For Dubai, after what has been a stiflingly hot and humid summer, we can now venture outside and leave behind the comfort of the air conditioning for more pleasant temperatures (finally). So, it’s only fitting that this issue we bring you a huge feature on desert camping; one of the UAE’s, and in fact the region’s, favourite winter pastimes. We explore Bedouin history and heritage and its connection to Emirati culture today aswell as the many ways of contemporary camping in our Camp Revamp feature (p37). If you’re up for taking a trip into the desert and spending a few nights stargazing, we’ll tell you where to start, what to pack and how to have a safe and unforgettable time. From the best places to pitch your tent, where to buy all your gear and all the need-to-know about camping with a true nomadic spirit, we’ve got it covered from a to z. If city life is where it’s at for you then get ready for a packed November. Think music festivals, art exhibitions, al fresco dining and plenty of cool cultural happenings. Get involved in Dubai Fitness Challenge with our pick of 11 ways to hit your 30 minutes of daily exercise – there’s SO much to do around the city for both kids and the grown-ups too (p32). Fashion, beauty, tech, and travel also makes up a huge part of the November issue, so check out wardrobe inspo, gadget must-haves and the best places for a staycation in the Emirates. We’re super excited for the festive season and those of you celebrating Thanksgiving, do enjoy! How’s your Christmas playlist coming along? Contrary to what some in the FACT office believe, it’s never too early to be playing Jingle Bell Rock. YouTube, here I come... ☺

Heritage and contemporary architecture meet to create a destination set to revive tourism in the heart of the city. The 1.8km long destination aims to tell Dubai’s story through architecture and unique experiences, enabling visitors to rediscover the heart of the city along its much-loved creek. A visit to the destination, located adjacent to Al Fahidi historical district, will inspire both residents and tourists with its authentic design aesthetic and ambience, paying homage to the age-old traditions of the UAE. The heritage area at Al Seef is patterned after old architecture in Dubai, while the sophisticated contemporary area contains sleek architectural spaces that blend seamlessly. SQUARE UP Dubai welcomes its newest addition to the vibrant club scene, Square, located at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel. The unique concept comprises a distinct nightclub setting inspired by the ‘underground’ streets of London. SQUARE IS A WALK THROUGH abandoned subway station. Left over the years to be a haven for street artists to display their work. Using all their creative ability to showcase their concept of life through adaptations of childhood heroes, struggles and fears, good times and bad, no wall has been left untouched by the artists. The venue boasts an industrial feel, corrugated iron Dj booth, oil drums for tables, and concrete walls masked with graffiti and artwork by famous street artists such as Banksy and MTO. The theme resembles that of a dark and grungy basement with neon light signs: a squatter’s paradise. Booths are sectioned and cornered with smooth taupe coloured sofas. The bar docks in the center of the club and runs up to the dance floor where you will find a DJ booth and VIP area. David King-Underwood, Managing Director, The KNG Group, said: “Square responds to the gap in the market for a less commercial venue that fuses a more cool and unpretentious vibe. After years of working in Dubai’s high-end club scene, I wanted to introduce something different. A casual place for kick-backs where people can come and have fun, there’s no strict rules, you don’t have to dress or look a certain way- just be yourself.” Music varies depending on the night; Tuesday’s brings you Escape, the ladies night, with commercial sounds from DJ Mr Levier. Ladies can enjoy unlimited drinks from 10pm until 1am, along with a special Peruvian menu from 8pm to 11pm. Wednesday is all about Link Up, a night to let go and release your naughty side, with a mixture of Caribbean, dancehall and reggaeton music mixed by DJ Brooklyn and Shero, from 10pm until 3am. Thursday night is Strictly Urban, with Luwayne Wonder, playing a selection of urban, hip-hop and RnB, from 10pm to 3am, where ladies also get complimentary drinks from 10pm to 1am. Friday’s at Square presents Juicy taking you back to the old skool, with a mixture of old skool hip hop, house, RnB and UK Garage from DJ’s Robbie Blanco and Salv Pepp, doors open from 10pm until 3am. ✤

GO: SQUARE IS LOCATED ON THE 5TH FLOOR IN THE JW MARRIOTT MARQUIS HOTEL, SHEIKH ZAYED ROAD, BUSINESS BAY. OPEN TUESDAY 8PM TO 3AM; AND WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY AND FRIDAY FROM 10PM TO 3AM. CALL 058 508 8010 FOR MORE INFORMATION. 12

POSTCRAFT COLLECTION BD Barcelona Design will showcase their latest collaboration with Emirati Designer, Her Highness Sheikha Hind bint Majed Al Qassimi, for their International creative exhibition, PostCraft. The Collection will be unveiled on November 14 at the Odd Piece during Dubai Design Week.

COMMISSIONED BY THE ODD PIECE, Sheikha Hind’s Is-Dher is her interpretation of the three historical periods: pre, during and post-oil era, that have defined the Middle East, in form of a collection of vases. She is a UAE-based entrepreneur and the founder of Designed by Hind, which focuses on producing collections of bespoke crockery that has become one of the region’s leading brands of porcelain. Talking about the collection, Sheikha Hind said: “The Vases represent the impact of each era on the other through fluidity and transitional qualities of their texture. With each period is represented by distinct textures of each vase.” A raw and earthy coral effect symbolises the time before oil was discovered; a luxurious gold foil façade bears testimony to the wealth and prosperity that came with its’ discover; the post-oil world, driven by technology and sustainability, is shown through glossy metallic. Each piece of work has journeyed through time, and has a story to tell. Shedding light on the collaboration, Arwa Hafiz, founder and owner of The Odd Piece, explained: “We see a pattern favouring simplicity, quality, unique and varied designs that focus on preserving local values and arts. With that in mind, it is so important to create diverse, yet limited editions of something meaningful with a story to relay in these times of global mass production,” she added. “PostCraft is the perfect platform to materialize this thought. We are very proud to present our collaboration with Sheikha Hind.” The PostCraft Collection exhibition is curated by SyrianSpanish Designer, Samir Yamani, and also features works of Architect Maysam Al Nasser from Bahrain, Interior Designer Loula Al Radwan from Kuwait and the Gazzaz Brothers from Jeddah, along with five remarkable pieces from Barcelona Design’s permanent collection of Salvador Dali, Antonio Gaudi and Jaime Hayon. ✤

SOLE DXB 2017 This year’s three-day global street culture festival is going to be LIT! Returning to Dubai from December 7 to 9 at d3, expect a heavyweight billing of the world’s finest names from across art, food, music, sports and style.

HAVING CELEBRATED AMERICAN HIP HOP heritage in 2015, and its British street-evolved counterpart in 2016, Sole DXB returns in 2017 to spotlight the legacy and influence of Japanese contemporary design. Reflecting the booming appetite for alternative culture that Sole DXB has steadily cultivated since its inception in 2010, the event will again call Dubai Design District (d3) home for three days. Here, the region’s only street and urban culture festival will mirror what d3 has set out to achieve; to build a thriving creative neighbourhood for a diverse community that share common interests. The confirmed music billing for 2017 welcomes hip-hop greats of both present and future. Artists to perform most notably include award-winning musician Kano, G.O.O.D Music President and rapper Pusha T, American silk-soul rapper Goldlink, German rapper Serious Klein, and Manchester urban jazz singer IAMDDB, hailed as one of the breakout stars of 2017 and already amassing streams in excess of one million hits per track. And it wouldn’t be Sole DXB without some intimate after-parties, with the OGs DJ Stretch Armstrong, DJ Shortkut, streetwear icons PATTA Soundsystem, and DJs Tom Crane, Dave Lubin, and Andy Baxter providing the flavours this year. Opening night, December 7, welcomes all to a now-ritual freeto-public annual film screening. This year, with the international premiere of Word is Bond is the turn of Mass Appeal and their recently produced hip-hop documentary, to take centre stage. The documentary examines the transformative power of lyrics in the world of Hip Hop. With an open door policy, it’s the first in a long line of socially driven moves from Sole DXB aimed at providing legitimate, culturally-weighted entertainment, stimulating grass roots artistry. On December 8, Sole DXB opens in its entirety, with a series of cultural talks unveiled, including intimate ‘no holds barred’ conversations with some of the biggest names in design, fashion and music. These include: headlining musician Pusha T; Fragment Design founder and much heralded Godfather of Streetwear Hiroshi Fujiwara; designer and style icon Jeff Staple of Staple Design; Peter Bittenbender, CEO of New Yorkbased media company/record label Mass Appeal (of which hip hop legend Nas is a partner); founder of global alternative culture platform Highsnobiety, David Fischer makes a guest appearance; jewellery designer and famously the only woman to own a store front on notorious LA shopping destination 26

CAMP REVAMP THEN AND NOW For thousands of years, camping was a way of life for the Bedouin of the Emirates, as tribes kept on a constant move across the vast desert, setting up tents and following herds of camel and sheep to greener pastures. Today, there is very little left of that world, and like most long-established traditions, camping has matured with time as FACT’s Shabana Adam discovers‌ fact magazine

NOMAD’S LAND

R

ewind back 90 years to the UAE where the only way of life was that of the Bedouin. It wasn’t so long ago that the Emirates was a vast area of desert inhabited by indigenous tribes, whose proud and resourceful tentdwelling nomads formed a culture that is now one of the founding pillars of the UAE, playing an integral part in Emirati national identity. Life and camping back then was simple; enjoyment came from the freedom of living under the stars, using camels as the main mode of transport, and residing in goat-skinned tents as makeshift homes. The lifestyle of the nomadic tribes was essentially a principal building block of Emirati society. Their independence and resourcefulness in the face of harsh environments illustrates, even to this day, the Emirati code of hospitality, which is to show great respect and honour to guests. The native Bedouins lived in varied terrain, from the ocean (for pearldiving and fishing), the desert (for grazing areas for their animals), and the oasis (for the farming of dates and vegetables). If we flash-forward to modern day, you can still see the lush date farms in Al Ain and wetterraced gardens in the mountain valleys, however, today there’s little trace left of that precious way of life, with camping evolving to keep in sync with contemporary society needs. Now, taking a trip into the desert is more of a must-do tourist activity, or a result of the need to escape mundane daily tasks and the city bustle, to seek solace in the vast emptiness. Especially during the cooler months of November to March, the UAE desert becomes a haven for short breaks. And there are a lot of different ways to go about planning and visiting the desert. Many will find that tour companies offer the best and safest packages, custom-designed to suit specific time frames and budgets. Desert Safaris are most popular; where people are whisked away in a 4x4 for a thrilling ride over massive sand dunes, either for dinner, dance, and activities in the desert, or an overnight stay. Some locals, on the other hand, do it differently. Many set up semipermanent winter camps offering the comfort of home and providing 21st century amenities. This experience, aptly dubbed, ‘glamping’ is somewhat of a pimped out version of Bedouin living and a great way for family and friends to enjoy the desert whilst spending quality time together. For those who want a real piece of traditional life, you’ll have to forgo everyday comforts and get ready to rough it. The best way to do it is plan your route into and through the desert with a mobile tent in tow. Pitch your tent under the stars just as the Bedouins would. With the UAE’s great climate and numerous camping spots, it’s never been easier to take a trip into the desert than it is now. This calls for your inner nomad to start planning! ✤ fact magazine

CAMPING 101 There’s nothing more important than being well prepared before you go out into the wilderness of the desert. Here’s your ultimate guide to prepping ahead…

WHERE TO SET UP CAMP… The UAE dessert is full of wonderful places to pitch your tent and gaze the stars. Don’t expect great facilities in many of these spots but do get ready for space and freedom, and for an experience that will give you a real taste of the country’s outdoors. Just over an hour’s drive will get you to the Ras Al Khaimah desert. Mizra’a is just one of the few popular areas where families gather for lively picnics and life under the winter skies. You’ll often see big groups sat around campfires, getting their barbecue on and chatting on into the night as this camp-lovers’ spot comes to life. Another excellent location to pitch your tent is Awafi with its smooth, sandy dunes and beautiful weather. As well as being the backdrop for many sporting and local cultural events, Awafi is where you can get up close and personal with the desert lifestyle – if only for one night. In Ras Al Khaimah the true nature of camping comes to life as you can set up camp near one of the small oasis farms surrounded by sand dunes and camel pens. Take an early morning drive and you might just see some Arabian Oryx, wild birds and pretty banyan trees too (all picture perfect for the ‘gram!). Make sure to take lots of food and drink, because there are no everyday facilities in the area, and you can be sure that Deliveroo or Talabat won’t be coming to the rescue this time! The momentous slice of Rub Al Khali (the empty quarter) deserves at least a two or three day trip! Liwa is around 350km southwest of Dubai and though it might seem quite a trek, it’s the world’s biggest sand desert, so it’s well worth the drive. These sand mountains are relatively accessible by 4x4 off-road vehicles and the whole region is scattered with curved, dramatic plunges, so if you’re there for a spot of dune bashing (you’d be crazy not to) make sure you’ve got an experienced driver at the wheel. There are plenty of great spots in this desert, dotted with freshwater pools and date plantations; all you have to do is take any road from Liwa oasis or follow the signs for Tal Mireb (Moreeb Hill). If you’re new to the whole desert camping thing then something a little closer to Dubai like Al Shuwaib or even along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (where many families camp for the proximity to the highway but some distance from the noise and cars) would be the perfect choices. This is where you’ll find fairly easy access to hidden campsites where stargazing from the top of a dune will wipe away all your worries. It’s close enough to civilisation that you can get your friends to drop off a Starbucks in the morning, but it’s faraway for you to enjoy and appreciate the peace and stunning scenery. ✤ 40

THE SEVEN GOLDEN RULES OF CAMPING

42

fact magazine

CULTURE •

What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Litte Prince THE SITE • Always pitch your camp in an empty open space far from jutting rocks or steep sandy inclines. • Pick a spot clear of plants to avoid any hazardous fire outbreaks. • Do not camp in places that are prohibited, the warning signs are there for a reason!

THE CAR • Before you hit the road make sure you give the car a really good check up for any

mechanical problems; tyres, headlights and battery are the most important. • Always travel in a convoy incase of a breakdown. • If you’re heading out to the desert, a 4x4 and an experienced off-road driver at the helm is a must! • Never pass a petrol station without filling up, you don’t know when the next one will appear.

THE FOOD • Don’t go over board with the menu, just take options that are easy and simple to make. Sausages and smores are great! • Canned food is always an easy meal and won’t take up too much space in the car. • If you bring fruits or vegetables, pick something that won’t go bad very fast; you

don’t want to get stuck with rotten produce. • Healthy snacks like cereal bars or quinoa crisps are good for when you just want something to nibble on.

THE WATER • Water is essential for anyone hitting the desert so make sure to stock up on H20 but don’t foolishly waste it; water will be your best friend out there. • Remember you’ll need to bring water for both drinking and washing up.

MUST-HAVES • GPS systems have become a camper’s essential tool but it’s always a safe bet to take a map along just in case the navigation system stops working or doesn’t have the latest routes. • A compass, shovel, torch, rope, air pump, and Swiss-

knife are fundamental to any camping trip.

FIRST AID • A first aid kit should be prepared in advance with all the basic necessities like band aids, burn cream, painkillers, insect repellent and medicines just in case someone gets hurt or sick. • If you bring along antibiotics, make sure to store them somewhere cool.

ETIQUETTE • When pitching your tent make sure to clear the ground of any unwanted objects. • Before leaving and heading back home, clean your camping site and put out your fire. • If you’re in an area that may be close to residential areas, be sure to keep the noise to a minimum so as not to disturb the local community. ✤ fact magazine

BEGINNER’S GUIDE: OFF-ROADING Off-roading is considered a serious hobby in the UAE especially during the winter months. As drivers head out into the vast desert and wadis for thrilling experiences over mighty dunes and mountain trails, the 4x4 vehicle becomes their best friend. Here, Nithul Lakshman, Managing Director of Dubaibased garage, PAL Auto Garage, shares his top tips to a hassle-free off-road trip.

Tyres If you don’t have the right tyre – do not take your vehicle off-road. A good set of all-terrain radials are vital to ensure the tyres do not get stuck or punctured. Make sure a thorough check of the tyres including the spare tyre, is done before the trip. Engine Oil Check It is important to check the oil level before any long road trip. It is always a good idea to take some spare engine oil with you as many engine problems are caused by lack of oil changes. If your next oil change is due soon, it’s safer to do it before you head off. Battery Unfortunately, there is no way to tell when the battery will die; sometimes it happens unexpectedly with no prior signs. However, if you feel that when you are starting the car, the engine cranks slower than normal, the battery is probably close to its end. Usually a battery may last from three to six years, so if your battery is over four to five-years-old, it’s a good idea to have it tested before an off-road trip. The last thing you want is to get stranded in the middle of the desert with a dead battery! These days you can easily find a self-starter gear to help you start the vehicle without the help of another vehicle. Brakes, Steering, Suspension Assessment A thorough inspection of the vehicle is vital before an off-road trip to check the functioning of brakes, steering and suspension. This service is usually provided at your local garage. Hi-Lift Jack If there is one item that every off-roader must absolutely have, it’s

a Hi-Lift Jack. Designed for off-road use, a high-lift is the ultimate tool that can be of assistance for recoveries in many conditions or for emergency repairs. Recovery Straps A recovery strap is an absolute essential. It comes handy in many situations especially during an engine breakdown or when out of fuel. These straps are designed for hard and jerking pull and can be hooked between the stuck and unstuck vehicle. Off-road Lights Extra lighting is essential when going off-road. The vehicle headlights might not be bright enough during fog or at night. A couple of high quality fog lights when combined with the existing headlights are the ideal. A thorough electrical check of the headlights and brake lights must be done ahead of any off-road trip. Trail Kit Before going on an off-road trip, it is necessary to put together a survival kit. This includes a first aid kit, mobile chargers, energy bars, food and water and the basic hand tools. Although many 4-wheelers come with GPS and compass these days, it is important to carry a physical map and a compass in case of an emergency or if the signal runs out. ✤

Four different zones await for parents and children to explore: The French Village, Boardwalk, India Gate, and The Peninsula, all giving a fab look into some of the greatest eras from the past. The Boardwalk is reminiscent of 1950’s America with an urban street setting that incorporates jugglers and live entertainment with glamorous neon signage, food outlets and palm trees. India gate is packed with musicians and acrobats as well as an impressive artistic sculpture to complete your journey through India. The French Village is exactly that, a medieval French town boasting the historic architecture of late 1600’s Europe – expect street performers, meandering alleyways and lovely outdoor dining. The Peninsula will play host to festivals and concerts at its large al fresco venue, highlighting 19th century architectural themes and a piazza connecting the different districts of the park via impressive bridges (you know what that means – more lovely captures for instagram and snapchat). ✤

After being served a hot cup of Arabic coffee and juicy dates, guests are encouraged to take in the traditional setting, complete with an authentic Noria water wheel in the background. From the Majlis, guests can venture into the bustle of a traditional Arabian souq with its plethora of jewellery, carpets, paintings, textiles in addition to souvenirs, all available to purchase. Guests can also experience traditional craft, such as henna and sand-art – symbols of the strong aesthetic and artistic pedigree of the region. Leaving behind the sounds of the souk, guests can enter the Spice and Fruit Bazaar, followed by The Food Bazaar, which features an elaborate line-up of dishes made from 500 ingredients and prepared at interactive live cooking stations. The expansive dining area features open seating as well as Majlis-style seating, including a Royal Majlis for groups of 30 or more, but for a more inspired experience, guest can channel their inner monarch at Maedat Al Sultan. The Middle Eastern entertainment harks back to the days of when pearl drivers scoured the waterways in their dhows in search of treasures. Guests can also make their way to the beautifully laid-out shisha lounge to relax and socialise. With the adults enjoying the food and music, the destination’s youngest guests can master new skills at the Qasr Al Sultan Kids Club, where there’s camel and pony rides and crafts under the guidance of the resident childcare specialists. hough it’s not as secret as it once was, many people in the Gulf have still not heard about the island of Sir Bani Yas. From the wondering wildlife to the panoramic views and the saltdomed hilltops, it very nearly feels like you’re in the heart of Africa. But, that is the beauty of this place. Sir Bani Yas Island is, in fact, a little over a two-hour drive followed by a 25-minute ferry ride away from Abu Dhabi International Airport. The 87km² island was first established as a reserve by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan when he became the first president of the UAE in 1971. Sheikh Zayed chose this island as a retreat as part of his Greening of the Desert programme. To this day, the island bares beautiful traces of its past when it was first inhabited by the Bani Yas tribe. Natural geological forces created the “salt dome” – gigantic dune tops that still make up much of its distinctive desert landscape. And as a result of Sheikh Zayed’s forward-thinking vision, Sir Bani Yas is proof that the UAE desert can be made more habitable for human settlement and provide a sanctuary for Arabia’s endangered wildlife, all at the same time. Something that history buffs will love, is that one of the oldest sites on the island is the

remains of a Nestorian Christian monastery, which dates back to 600AD. For those who want to experience this oldworld charm with an insight into what life was like here some 50 years ago, the two stunning resorts by Anantara hotels will allow you to do just that plus more. Luxury living is at the forefront at both Anantara Al Sahel Villa Resort and Anantara Al Yamm Villa Resort. The first is located amid the island’s rugged nature and wildlife park with over 10,000 free-roaming animals, whilst the latter is a beachfront haven for pure relaxation. When we checked in at the port’s Anantara office to hop on the ferry, our journey began with pleasant, attentive service. Furthermore, the hospitality and friendliness of the staff was one of the strongest and most outstanding highlights for us. From the front desk to the housekeeping, the buggy drivers

who happily ushered us from the door of our villa to the hotel entrance, the Anantara drivers who took guests out on excursions and in between resorts, plus the waiting staff at breakfast and dinner – we could not fault a single thing about service and efficiency. They even fulfilled our random request of a candle and incense burner – nothing was too much for these helpful men and women, and it was their warmth that elevated every moment of our stay. Anantara Al Sahel Villa Resort is made up of 30 stylish, private luxury villas. With one and two-bedroom options, you needn’t worry about taking a family vacay or visiting with a group of friends – you’ll all have plenty of space to yourselves. With traditional thatchroofed design, each villa offers the best of luxury amenities with an authentic touch of elegance and comfort. We particularly

loved the rustic chic design, combined with neutral, safarai-inspired tones and materials. From the comfort of your gorgeous bedroom with its magical four-poster bed, or the cushy, spacious living area and even the inviting patio, you can experience the wild wonders of savannah life from your very own private sanctuary that complements its natural surroundings with such sophistication. The bathtub is serious hotel goals whilst the added bonus of a kitchen and a huge dining area means that you can bring snacks or preprepared food from home – hello, midnight munchies! Having your own private hot tub or plunge pool (depending on which villa you choose) is also a huge bonus for afternoon dips when you’re too chilled-out to get up and walk to the pool. But when you do get a chance, the pool is somewhere you’ll definitely want to go and check out – and take a hundred pictures for the ‘gram. It’s an elegant oasis where you can unwind to the gentle lull of a desert breeze and at the same time, catch a rare glimpse of grazing gazelles and other island wildlife. The same can be said for breakfast time – it’s a part of the day that you don’t want to miss. The resort puts out food for the animals in the early a.m so when you take a seat at the picturesque Savannah Grill & Lounge, expect a camera-ready view to go with your first meal of the day, where we’d highly recommend a freshly-prepared omelette or a selection of yummy pastries with your choice of beverage. This is also a place that you’ll want to experience for dinner as the menu boasts tempting flavours of the African continent. If you love to let your taste buds explore, try the Sauteed Peri Peri Chicken Livers and the South-African style Lamb Chops served with mash potato and vegetables – just delish! fact magazine

Off the reserve and we find ourselves by an impressive white-sand beach, this is Anantara Al Yamm Villa Resort. Here, you’ll also find 30 incredibly luxurious villas; 15 on the beach and 15 overlooking the lush mangroves. If a secluded setting is what you want – that’s what you’ll find here. Our two-bedroom mangrovefacing villa is what beach house dreams are made of. We learn that the entire Barasti-modelled resort has been inspired by traditional fishing and pearl diving villages of the UAE, featuring breezy interior and exterior designs that reflect its beachside location. The bedrooms, much like the other resort, are HUGE. The master is decked out with one of the comfiest beds we’ve ever slept on and the other boasts equally delightful twin beds. Both rooms have large patio doors that lead out to the private plunge pool and what immediately strikes us is the quiet – which is the same at the Al Sahel Villa Resort – complete and utter silence with the odd chirps of crickets. If only we could have that EVERY DAY! You need to dedicate an entire morning or afternoon (or even a full day) just to spend by the pool or on the beach. Remember us mentioning how good the service is here? One of the pool waiters literally carried two massive bean bags down the beach for us, in a bid to make us feel more comfy next to the sea shore - a thoughtful gesture that we greatly appreciated (tanning whilst lying on a bean bag is what the hashtag #HolidayOnFleek was made for!). Now, let’s talk about another surprise. There is actually one more property on Sir Bani Yas Island. Enter Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara. A fullfledged hotel that caters very well to families and those who may still want some life and bustle around them unlike the pin-drop silence that the villa resorts offer. What this means is that when you stay at any of the villa resorts, you have the option of visiting the hotel for activities, use of the spa, and, of course, the dining options. Friendly drivers will pick and drop off guests who wish to experience it ALL!

With that said, make your evening dinner plans at Amwaj restaurant and dine amidst a warm breeze to the soothing sound of the sea lapping the shore. Meaning ‘waves’ in Arabic, Amwaj is a true seafood destination offering a contemporary, rustic beachside setting. The relaxed living room ambience invites you to cosy into oversised chairs on the outdoor terrace and unwind to chill out music. A lavish seafood menu showcases the freshest local catches and imported favourites, some grilled to perfection and others presented in gourmet salads, complemented by an impressive cellar selection. In the cooler months, a.k.a right now, a crackling bonfire is set up beside the beach to toast marshmallows on, yum! Choosing which resort to stay in is a pleasant dilemma to have. But, one thing that we’d really tell you not to skimp on is your choice of outdoor activities on the island. Where to begin? First, an early morning Nature Walk is a must. You’ll spend 1.5 hours on the east side enclosure getting up close and personal with animals like the Beisa Oryx, Axis deer, Urial sheep, and Red Deer. If, like us, luck is on your side, you may very well get the chance to see a tower of giraffes getting their morning fuel fix - so bring those cameras as well as good shoes, sunglasses and a hat. A sunset Nature & Wildlife Drive will take you on a 4x4 adventure where you will lay eyes on some of the beautiful free-roaming wildlife, which includes predators such as the fierce Cheetah, the peacefully elegant Flamingo and grand Reticulated Giraffe; just to name a few! On both excursions, it is the expert guides that really make your time amongst the wildlife, worthwhile. They are knowledgeable on everything from the flora and fauna like various plant and tree species to knowing all the tricks of the trade in locating the animals, so that you can have a wholesome, memorable experience. Aside from this, you’re spoiled with the option to go land sailing, horse riding, mountain biking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, kayaking, deep sea fishing, or to take a culture and history tour and to practice archery or falconry amongst other thrilling activities. Not only is Sir Bani Yas Island the coolest eco-friendly travel option for a staycation in the UAE, it’s also one of the most breathtaking. Couples, this is one with romance written all over it; singletons, you and your friends will be well catered for with so many exciting activities. ubai is well-known around the world for not doing things by halves. The world’s biggest mall? Check. The world’s tallest building? Check. Sometimes though, it’s nice to find places in this grand city that boast a more boutique and intimate feel. And when it’s quality, comfort and privacy that you want, the Manzil Downtown Dubai will deliver. Like its sister property, Vida Downtown Dubai, just around the corner, this gorgeous hotel blends together stylish interior with tasteful touches of Arabesque decor. Our check in is swift and although the hotel is very busy, the staff are polite and professional. What we’ve fallen in love with is the smell of

oud in the lobby; it gives a regal yet warm and inviting vibe (and we’re currently regretting not asking about the brand name of the mesmerising smell). The 197-room hotel is bustling with travellers, business people and local guests. Its pull of a diverse crowd is only testament to its perfect location, close to Business Bay and the main highways - giving excellent links to tourist hotspots and many office areas too. Eight floors up and we enter the Deluxe Room; a sleek and minimalist space which impresses straight away. You have a choice between booking a room with a view of the towering Burj Khalifa or the relaxed swimming pool - both great options. Ours is looking down

on the hotel’s pool as well as views of the surrounding Downtown area. It’s a peaceful sight and one that we’re sure every tourist or business traveller would be happy to wake up to! The colour scheme consists of neutral shades - brown, beige and white. There’s lots of bright light through the large windows and what we love most is the mural art work on the wall behind the bed. There’s a huge flat screen TV and gorgeous Moroccan-inspired lights hanging in the corner of the room. The bathroom is large and has both a rain shower and giant tub, so should you want a long, hot soak we definitely recommend it. The rooms also have a large desk with speedy, complimentary Wi-Fi which is a big plus. If you don’t want to be in your room the whole time though, the Tawasal desk is a contemporary business hub situated in the hotel lobby. It is available 24-hours-a-day, allowing guests to access a computer and enabling them to connect to the Internet and a wireless printer. It seems they’ve thought of everything! As mentioned, the hotel is in one of the best locations in Dubai on Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, overlooking Souk Al Bahar, and is within walking distance to Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall and The Dubai Fountains - talk about options, we were spoiled. The Boulevard is impressive with wide footpaths (a rarity in the UAE) and is constantly buzzing, particularly at night when the hotel and many surrounding venues become extremely busy. An evening stroll here will take you past treelined streets dotted with fairy lights - it’s picturesque. If you don’t feel like walking, you’ll be happy to know that Manzil has just introduced vintage bicycles for guests to use during their stay. You can hop on and ride down the road to Vida Downtown or explore the area without the stress of the Dubai traffic. One of the best things about this boutique haven is the breakfast and we love that they have plenty of options for healthy eating. The presentation of the food alone is superb. Granola and berries are served up in cute Mason jars alongside small plates of cut fruit and baskets of baked goods. There are freshly squeezed green juices in large glass carafes on offer plus more hearty options such as whole wheat pancakes with almond butter and quinoa porridge with almonds and dates. Both of which taste delicious, making for great fuel to help you start your day. fact magazine

If you aren’t so worried about watching your waistline, then there are lots of full breakfast options such as tasty omelettes with oozing cheddar cheese and as many sides, to go with the eggs, as you can dream of. Manzil also features other excellent dining venues including Boulevard Kitchen, an all-day dining restaurant serving food from across the Middle East along with modern fare, freshly prepared in an open plan kitchen. We head here for dinner and dine on exceptional food including the creamy burrata salad, fresh grilled sea bass, and the tastiest kunafa we’ve eaten in a LONG time - what.a.winner! We wash this down with a cup of chai karak and continue to people watch - a beautiful winter diner setting. The first evening was SO good that we returned again for meal number two and, lo-and-behold, the food was just as delicious the second time around. A special shoutout has to go to our waitress on both nights, Masaa. Her friendly approach, warm demeanour and overall knowledge of the menu was superb. No ask was too big or too small for this lovely young lady - she showed equal positive attitude when we requested a phone charger and also when we went with her main course recommendations. Bravo! The Courtyard is also a great option for unwinding and offers shisha and an Arab-fusion beverage menu featuring regional teas and other specialties such as Arabic afternoon tea which can be enjoyed al fresco. Of course, it’s not a staycation unless you spend at least one entire afternoon by the pool, right? And Manzil Downtown has a stunning one. It fits right in with the hotel’s chilled-out vibe with comfy loungers and a few shaded cabanas too. Tanning is bliss whilst the pool itself will please those who like to swim lengths. The only dilemma you’ll face here is when you should leave - afternoon nap GOALS. Service was consistent throughout our entire stay and we loved the cosy feel of the property, the easy access to surrounding attractions and the utterly helpful staff. Our advice is simple: give the crowd-packed resorts of Dubai a rest and opt for a more classy and down-to-earth staycayion choice at Manzil Downtown. Silk Road through his artwork and draws parallels between past and present politics of the East and West. In another work, The Copper City, Abla chose a Pakistani fairy tale as a point of departure. In the story, all of the inhabitants of a city have been turned into copper except for the princess who is locked in a tower. In a conclusion similar to that of the German fairy tale Rapunzel, a hero rides through the frozen city and saves her. This fable symbolises political and social unrest in many of the countries within the Silk Road network, which paralyse government efforts to address wider problems within their countries. Born in 1953, in Mansoura, Egypt, Mohamed Abla lives and works between Cairo and Fayoum, Egypt and Walsrode, Germany. After graduating from the Faculty of Fine Arts

f you’re fascinated by the world of art, look no further than Tabari Artspace and its newest exhibition Mohamed Abla: The Silk Road. Including a selection of abstract artworks which synthesise calligraphy, collage and traditional Middle Eastern techniques, all exploring folktales from North Africa, the Levant, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, there’s something for every history buff and art fan to discover here. A common theme in Abla’s work is the exploration of new methods of mark making. For The Silk Road series, the artist employs the Turkish Ebru technique (paper marbling), which is the act of floating paper in a tray filled with water and oil paint. The paint is then carefully transferred to the surface of the paper to create colourful marble-like patterns. Abla cuts shapes from the variously dyed papers, arranging them into compositions resembling animals, heroes, princesses and other folktale figures and imagined scenes derived from the ancient Silk Road network, which was operational from around 120 BCE to 1450s CE. Narratives play an important role in Abla’s work, and the inspiration for this series stems from the artist‘s research into the history of the Silk Road, as well as recent travels to India, Syria and Iraq. In his works, the artist selects specific folktales which he sees as symbolic of the unsettling political and economic issues in Egypt following the Revolution in 2011. Abla reimagines the activity of the

in Alexandria (1973), Abla embarked upon a seven-year journey around Europe, where he visited museums in Spain, France, Belgium and Germany, eventually studying art, sculpture and graphics in Vienna and Zurich. His first solo exhibition ran at the Hohmann Gallery, Hamburg, Germany (1979), followed by shows at Gallery Ewat, Leeuwarden, The Netherlands (1989); Art Hall, Örebro, Sweden (1991); and the Egyptian Academy of Rome, Italy (1991), amongst others. Later, he moved back to Egypt where he held several solo exhibitions around the country. In 1994 he won the First Prize at the Kuwait Biennial, followed by the Grand Prix at the Alexandria Biennale, Egypt, in 1997. Abla has also founded several artistic institutions which connect artists locally, regionally and internationally through artistic creation. In 2007, he founded the Fayoum Art Center, Egypt, where artists meet, work and collaborate. In 2009, the first caricature museum in the Middle East, also in Fayoum, was established by Abla and has grown in popularity with visitors from all over the world. ✤

BIG SCREEN Justice League WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Inspired by Superman’s selfless sacrifice for humanity, Bruce Wayne pairs up with his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Whilst Batman and Wonder Woman unite to recruit a team of metahumans to help fight against this newly awakened threat. Can the unprecedented league of heroes save the planet from catastrophe?

DIRECTOR: Zack Snyder CAST: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Shaping up to be the biggest cinematic event in Warner Brother’s superhero history, Justice League is a direct sequel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film witnesses the coming together of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, under the helm of the legendary Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon. With the world in imminent danger, it is up to Batman and Wonder Woman and their team of metahuman heroes, including The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman to protect humanity as the Justice League. Featuring a much more mature Wonder Woman and a more hopeful Batman, Justice League is an interesting product of two directors. The film manages to shake things up on the superhero scene while staying true to the DC legacy. If anything, watch it for Jason Mamoa’s flawless portrayal of Aquaman - drool central.

Highlights

The film manages to shake things up on the superhero scene while staying true to the DC legacy.

Lady Bird WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

With her family struggling after the loss of her husband’s job, Marion McPherson, a California nurse, steps up to keep her family afloat. The film follows Marion as she tries to make ends meet while maintaining a turbulent relationship with her equally loving, strong-willed and deeply opinionated teenage daughter.

– Justice League

DIRECTOR: Greta Gerwig CAST: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

An incredibly raw and gritty tale of family, society and adolescence, Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut envelops you in genuine, deeply-felt emotion. Covering semi-autobiographical ground, Gerwig relates the story of a confused teenage girl in Sacramento, full to the brim with lofty aspirations of where she’ll be heading to college. Clashing frequently with mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf), Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) has a very different sense of the world than her mother. Exhibiting exceptional attention to detail and a jaunty pace, the soulbarring dramedy grants all of its characters equal respect while being downright frank and funny. 74

The Best of Us By Joyce Maynard

Scream Above the Sounds

By Stereophonics

While alternative rock has always been our go-to for impromptu jam sessions, there’s no denying that Stereophonics are truly slaying the game! Fortunately for us, the Welsh rock band is all set to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Word Gets Around with Scream Above the Sounds. The anthemic tenth studio album blends a number of different sounds to create a very contemporary record. All In One Night, an observational track, reflects the big, bold rock songwriting that made us fall in love with the band in the first place. While the track may sound a little lackluster when compared to their previous work, it still holds its own. Written from the people’s point of view on the changing climate of the world, all the songs on the album carry a sense of release. Beginning with a brave opening statement, Caught by the Wind brings together catchy lyricism and eager cheers for a definite crowd pleaser. A record that shows just how far the Welsh quartet has come.

COUNTRY/ POP

Glasshouse

Following the tragic demise of her husband after a grueling fight against pancreatic cancer, journalist and author Joyce Maynard recounts their relationship. Capturing their whirlwind romance, a marriage cut short by tragedy and Joyce’s return to singlehood on new terms, it’s a heartbreaking yet lifeaffirming take on true love.

By Jessie Ware The queen of lovelorn anthems and heartbreak elegance, Jessie Ware is back with her third studio album and it’s going to give you all the feels! Glasshouse is very close to the songstress’ heart. An increasingly personal record, it’s packed with stunning vocals and vivid storytelling. Floating over an undulating synth melody, the complex track Midnight beautifully captures the magic and terror that comes with falling in love. Reaching the upper limits of her range, the singer exhibits an explosiveness we have never heard from her before. Her subtle, steely and sensual voice documents a tumultuous relationship in the intriguing single, Selfish Love. Bridging the gap between R&B, soul and the sounds of British dance music, Jessie Ware’s style is a gift that just keeps on giving.

oro + Ko appears to be the ideal venue for the City Walk development from Meraas Holdings, a destination with the objective of recreating the feeling of a European shopping street, via an interesting blend of street art, boutique-style shops and a number of outdoor cafes, as if transporting visitors to London, Paris or in this case, Barcelona. Hidden in The Square (close to Lima and the recently opened Galvin), the first thing we notice as we pass between manicured hedges and into the restaurant space is the Martini Bar. It’s refreshing to see a licensed venue outside of the expected hotel circuit, especially one that takes on the feeling of a speakeasy and specialises in Martini’s (with over 55 varieties, both shaken and stirred) and gin-based botanicals. The next thing to hit us is the soundtrack, forgoing the expected flamenco or rumba-Catalana for an addictive mix of old-school funk, soul and hip-hop, perfectly in keeping with the industrial style interiors. As bold as the music is the food, with Toro + Ko offering a selection of over 60 tapas

dishes, as ambitious in their flavours as the showcase of ingredients, some of which we’ve not seen in Dubai before. These determining factors are the primary reason for excelling this establishment to the top of our list of Catalan dining destinations. Have you ever eaten sea urchin? Well, our meal began with the erizos con caviar Sevruga, an interesting mix of Sevruga caviar, sea urchin and quail egg that comes presented upon a gold spoon amidst wisps of smoke and offers a delicate and creamy taste of the sea that may be too much for some, but was a standout dish for us. In more traditional territory, the Catalan tomato bread offers simplicity at its best – a staple of tapas bars in Barcelona, reminding us of our travels to the coastal city earlier this summer. The same can be said for the Embutidos Y Quesos, a wooden board full of cured meats and cheeses that will surprise diners for the fact that the charcuterie served at Toro + Ko is purely a cured beef relatively unknown outside of its Spanish region (although the flavour profile is VERY similar to the meat which rhymes with fork). It’s this strive for authenticity and

sheer originality, combined with the very best in seasonal ingredients that make dining at Toro + Ko such a joy. Our lunch involved some interesting twists as we marvel at the Aperitivo, a salad of Manchego cheese, olives and piquillo peppers presented in two forms - traditional and the spherification - with both identical in taste. The food represents a modern interpretation of classic dishes, plated like works of art and purposely constructed to be admired and discussed. There’s an intricacy to the food that takes a dish like Patatas Bravas, which is generally a sloppy construct of cubed fried potato slathered in a fiery tomato sauce; and transforms it into stuffed cylinders delicately piped with aioli. The Tuna Tartare meanwhile, transpires to be a sweet treat served with fresh guacamole and autumn berries that shouldn’t be missed. One of the joys of eating tapas is the small sharing style portions offering the opportunity to try a number of dishes, meaning more room for the delightfully tender Tuetano Con Carrilleras (roasted bone marrow with citrus salad and beef

The paella is then ‘scratched’ at the table prior to serving, enabling the caramelised rice to come to the forefront of this spectacular and flavoursome dish. When it comes to desserts, Toro + Ko can proudly claim the title of the best churros in the UAE (that we’ve had the pleasure of devouring), presented with a trio of delectable sauces for dipping - dark chocolate, raspberry, and an intriguing miso dulce de leche. The Crema Catalana may not look like much but it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. With seating for 160 people including an expansive terrace providing unrestricted views of the Burj Khalifa. FUNKIEST FUSION IN TOWN Bringing together two of the world’s most fresh and admired cuisines, Namu at the W Dubai Al Habtoor City is a truly genius culinary concept in the city that does food so well. Out & About UAE’S David Tapley was ready to let his taste buds run wild with the flavours of Korean and Japanese cooking. fact magazine

95

• FOODIE CORNER

I

t’s often been said that the concept of fusion leads to confusion, but that is far from the case at Namu in the W Dubai Al Habtoor City. The W is a brand associated with a youthful and funky approach to hospitality with a cacophony of colours and illuminations enchanting diners upon entering the lobby. This vibrancy partnered with futuristic design elements continues all the way up to the hotel’s 31st floor where you’ll find Namu. The restaurant blends seamlessly into the contemporary property, asserting a minimalistic approach while keeping the W’s energetic soundtrack, a factor you wouldn’t necessarily expect of an Asian restaurant. Yet, Namu is set on subverting expectations in offering ‘social Korean with a Japanese slant’ mixing the very best of the two cuisines in a casual setting, punctuated by four show-kitchens that add an element of interactivity to proceedings. Despite the theatrics of the kitchen and the ultramodern decor with it’s bridged walkways providing brief glimpses of the lounge on the mezzanine level below, it’s the vantage point over the newly opened Dubai Water Canal that makes dining at Namu so special. Tables are all strategically positioned to look outwards across the waterways, cityscape and the Arabian Gulf. The phrase ‘dinner with a view’ immediately springs to mind. Namu translates from the Korean word for wood, and it’s these connotations to texture and nature that amplify the unique nature of the concept and the intriguing interplay between these two Asian styles. The menu may be more Korean than Japanese and encourages a sharing concept, meaning diners are able to try a number of dishes to really embrace the true flavour profiles of these two distinctive cuisines. Stripped of the usual conformity of fine dining, Namu embraces a casual approach with dishes arriving, as they’re ready, as opposed to following a strict regimented order. For those who only know Korean food for table-top barbecue, prepare to be astounded by the variety of dishes on offer. The menu is broken down into alluring sections, with appetisers that include Hokkaido (scallop, truffle soy, tenkatsu and sashimi kombu) and the Wagyu Tataki called the ‘Namu Impressions.’ A first impression is possibly the most important factor when dining at a new venue and one word that immediately springs to mind when dining at Namu is texture. For each individual dish is meticulously planned to showcase particular flavours (sweet or spicy). aromas, colours and individual textures. 96

fact magazine

Keeping with the naturalistic theme of the name, Namu’s menu takes on an elemental approach with sections named after the natural elements. You’ll experience ‘ice’ which is composed of the sushi dishes of which we’d recommend the ice platter specials of sashimi that includes scallop, salmon and tuna belly. The freshness of the raw fish, sliced with such precision is frankly astounding and an experience that we can only really describe as smooth. ‘Fire’ relates to the robatayaki (fire-side) style of cookery with a number of grill options available - Wagyu, King Prawn, Octopus and the Japanese signature Black Cod. As good as these dishes were, it was the simplicity of the more traditional dishes that resonated with us the most. With the Namu Bibimbab being a highlight, a classic Korean rice that mixes mountain vegetables with a free-range egg to bring a sweet and almost velvety nature to the dish. With Namu’s expert mixologists on hand to craft some truly beguiling concoctions using Korean soju or the truly unique wasabi mocktail, this place is more than just a venue for dinner. Perch at the bar while admiring those cityscape views - we think you’ll stay longer than you expect. Staff are extremely knowledgable and service is delivered with an almost methodical efficiency, with the team taking ample time to explain the dishes and what makes each one so unique. If you’re looking for a truly memorable dining experience we’d suggest you try and secure one of the two private dining rooms, one brings an air of exclusivity to the phenomenal waterfront views, while the other resembles a glass box. Above all, Namu is bringing something entirely new to the city which seems perfectly in keeping with its location in the W Dubai. A focus on food, atmosphere and the unique, Namu is a testament to the fact that Dubai is fast becoming THE culinary destination of choice in the region. ✤

CITY INSIDER

David Tapley

Founder & Editor, Out & About UAE

Hi David! Tell us your three favourite landmarks in Dubai and why... As the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa is a symbol of the UAE and what this country that we call home has managed to achieve in such a short space of time, no matter how often I see it, I’m always in awe. I’m also a HUGE fan of the beach and absolutely love JBR. No matter what time of day (or night) JBR is always buzzing. From the sand and sea to the restaurants, hotels, cinemas and retail options, JBR has it all. Dubai Creek is a bit of a hidden gem and it’s surprising how many Dubai residents have never been. Hop on board one of the traditional wooden abras and visit the spice and gold souks of Deira. 98

Describe the city’s arts and culture scene and some of your standout happenings/events... So many people believe Dubai to be an artificial place but there’s a thriving arts and culture scene just waiting to be discovered. Dubai’s Al Fahidi historical district, close to the creek, is home to a number of art galleries and street art pieces. Street art is something I miss from life in London and it’s nice to see it in some capacity here in the Middle East. The same can be said for Al Quoz which is under-going a bit of a resurgence and transitioning into a more arts based destination. Finally, the arrival of La Perle and the Dubai Opera bring theatre to the city, which is something that is a great addition.

Share with us some of your personal and professional goals for 2018... 2017 has been a fantastic year for me and I really do hope for more of the same next year. My collaborations with both Fact Magazine and What’s Cooking UAE have really helped to showcase the worth of Out & About UAE as a brand and I hope to expand upon this in 2018. I have a couple of international press trips in the pipeline which I’m very excited about but above all, I want to keep sharing my experiences in the hope that it encourages others to do the same. On the personal side of things, I hope to work on that work/blog/life balance and create some more time to spend with family and friends.
