E
very year when Valentine’s Day edges closer, it gets me thinking about what this one day in the calendar that’s “designed” to celebrate love, means to different people. Is it spending time with your special someone, is it a reminder about all the important people in their lives, or is it simply a chance to exchange gifts and see which one of you put a bigger price tag on love? In a recent podcast episode by This American Life, the theme was apt for February listening – it looked at the unfolding of rom-com film plot lines: there’s a meet-cute (characters meet in an appealing way), then come obstacles (things stopping them from being together), there’s a “run towards love” where one character literally sprints through the streets to declare their feelings to the other, and finally there’s the end of the film which is usually the beginning of the relationship. And voila, you have yourself a rom-com. The podcast questioned how realistic this depiction of love is - how many of you have ran at marathon speed to the other side of town and proclaimed their love? (I mean, good for you if that’s how things went down!) – but I’m guessing that the majority of people have had less “Hollywood” versions of a love story. So, much like rom-coms, Valentine’s Day could well be seen as another commercial fad – but just like you fall for the story and invest in the protagonists of an on-screen romance, chances are that the hype around V-Day has also captured your heart (and pockets). And, when in Dubai, you don’t do Valentine’s Day by halves. It’s all or nothing. Our Staycation Spotlight comes from what is our favourite five-star hangout in DIFC, The Ritz-Carlton DIFC, where the team and service truly excels (p52). Disciplined Insurgence A SOLO EXHIBITION BY IRAQI CALLIGRAPHER WISSAM SHAWKAT OPENED TASHKEEL’S NEW SEASON FOR 2019.
DISCIPLINED INSURGENCE MARKS THE SECOND solo exhibition at Tashkeel by Wissam Shawkat, the Basraborn, Dubai-based, award-winning artist and designer. His craftsmanship and practice is testament to the innovations being made in Arabic calligraphy and typography in the 21st century. “On one hand, his work can be interpreted as rebellious and bold, and on the other it feels completely natural to an artist who has fostered a life-long relationship with the letters themselves,” said Lisa Ball-Lechgar, Deputy Director of Tashkeel. “Wissam joined Tashkeel in 2009, a year after we opened. Since then, he has run various workshops in Arabic calligraphy, inspiring new generations of practitioners,” she added. “He has also exhibited with us in the group show ‘Hurouf Al Noor’ (2011) and his first solo exhibition ‘Monumental 11/11’ (2015).” Shawkat was 10-years-old when his teacher introduced him to calligraphy. Largely self-taught, he mastered the art through meticulous research, using books, meeting master craftsmen and visiting museum collections across the Middle East and North Africa. He has since received numerous prizes for his calligraphy and has participated as both an artist and committee member at multiple editions of Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial and Dubai International Arabic Calligraphy Exhibition. Letters of Love, Shawkat’s 2011 solo exhibition at Manhattan, New York City gallery Reed Space, introduced his contemporary compositions to a global audience. Tashkeel’s new exhibition reflects back on Shawkat’s pioneering career while maintaining a modern stance with the inclusion of current works. Whilst not a retrospective as such, it contains 8

pieces from several series using his eponymous Al Wissam script, which he began working on in 2004, as well as new experiments with the ancient Thuluth script. Believed to have originated in 10th-century Baghdad, the form, has long been revered amongst calligraphers. The exhibition includes pieces from Calligraforms, a body of work that fuses calligraphy and abstract letter forms. In this, Shawkat focused not only on the individual letters’ precise forms, but also on the abstract shapes generated by examining the geometric spaces inside and outside of their structures. Shawkat’s work is regularly featured in books on Arabic calligraphy and typography, included in museum exhibitions, and acquired by private collectors. Now engaged full-time as an artist, designer, and Arabic typographer, he will return to Tashkeel two years after his debut there, Monumental 11/11, demonstrated his departure from traditional calligraphy and dynamic shift towards abstraction. “The ability to read Arabic is irrelevant when it comes to appreciating Wissam Shawkat’s work,” Lisa said. “With his vivid, playful compositions, Shawkat consciously positions himself on the outskirts of both the calligraphy community and the Middle East’s contemporary art scene.” ✤

Embracing the spirit of tolerance and spiritual acceptance, Jessica Watcon-Thorp explores the mysticism of Islam through her artistic creations… TAWAFUT, A NEW EXHIBITION AT Showcase Gallery endeavours to reveal the important role that religious tolerance plays in the Islamic faith through pieces that are based in deep research and reveal a personal exploration into the mysticism and stories of Islam. The largest piece – a delicate work created on raw line with French ink in violet, forest green, silver and pewter – is comprised of 786 hand created stars made using an intricate monoprinting and stencil technique. Titled Bismillah after the invocation said by Muslims at the beginning of any undertaking and also indicating the start of a prayer, the piece also reveals an interest in Islamic numerology where the number 786 represents the phrase itself. Other pieces are based on the Prophets, such as that of Adam 24

– the first man – who was made from handfuls of earth from all corners of the globe and so, is the embodiment of acceptance and tolerance. She has also delved into the story of the humble and often maligned spider (ankabut), which in a hadith or story of the Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h, who is attributed with saving the Prophet Muhammad’s life. These works are all based on interviews that the artist has conducted throughout her exploration process and aided her in deep research and are made with glazed layers of monoprint tissues and paint. “My work has been a gateway into my exploration of Islam and has led me to seek more information on the spiritual life of many people living in UAE,” Jessica says. “I have found that through my work other people who don’t know about the religion are interested and in this way, my art is acting as a bridge to bring people and cultures together and towards building tolerance.” The exhibition also features work by five other Dubai-based artists and runs until March 14 at Showcase Gallery in Alserkal Avenue. ✤

he art scene in Dubai is bustling with beautiful murals dotted around the city in restaurants and cafes, all brimming with new and contemporary galleries. Pop artist, Luca Valentini, is inspired by the Middle-Eastern metropolis to create thought-provoking artwork, some of which are displayed in favourite dining haunts such as Billionaire Mansion. Many avant-garde art movements compose the canon of contemporary art. As the successor of modern art, the contemporary genre includes art produced today and dates back to a single, iconic movement: Pop Art. While Pop Art began in the 1950s and was popularised in the 1960s, several iconic artists today, including Luca Valentini, continue to keep it alive through their exciting and highly regarded works. 44

Pop Art as we know it emerged among the New York artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, and Claes Oldenburg, among others, who were characterised by their portrayal of any and all aspects of popular culture that had a powerful impact on contemporary life; their iconography, taken from television, comic books, movie magazines, and all forms of advertising, was presented emphatically and objectively, and by means of the precise commercial techniques used by the media from which the iconography itself was borrowed. Following the popularity of the Abstract Expressionists - the post–World War II art movement in American painting Pop Art's reintroduction of identifiable imagery (drawn from mass media and popular culture) was a major shift for the direction of modernism. The subject matter drifted far from fine art's
traditional themes of morality, mythology, and history; rather, Pop Artists celebrated commonplace objects and people of everyday life, in this way seeking to elevate popular culture to the level of fine art. Perhaps owing to the incorporation of commercial and media images, Pop Art has become one of the most recognisable styles of modern art. Luca is well known as a Dubai-based, Italian pop artist who's myriad worlds depicted through his work have unprecedented pulling power, enticing consumers and critics alike, continues to keep Pop Art alive today. Valentini unravels his own past, aesthetic obsessions and fabulist fantasies through his new artistic work of symbols and metaphors. Below, Luca Valentini shares some of his ideas on the key characteristics of pop art that make it so admirable and controversial in today's contemporary society.

• ARTS SPOTLIGHT Over the last decade, Valentini has carved out a niche in the art world through his bold representations of the fashion industry and its associated myths, artworks which intend to both disturb and fascinate the idea of perfection, and create a controversial talking point. What is the difference between pop art and fine art? Pop art fulfils the primary needs of people and provides instant gratification, whereas fine art is more introspective and has different levels of interpretation. Who is the pop artist of 2019 versus the pop artist of the 1960s? Today we are more sensitive to the mythology of society, and it has become a challenge to find our true essence and sense of purpose. I’m inspired by everything that I admire or catches my attention. Whether it’s fashion, music, movies or stage shows, I create a story or a meaning for every piece of art that I create. People generally glorify models, actors, and musicians, but to me, we are actually all the same. Composed of flesh, bones, and muscles, which is why I believe there is no need to glorify such celebrity figures. What is your take on the future of pop art? Pop art has to disconnect from the graphic design composition because a lot of the new artworks from pop art artists nowadays are becoming saturated. The focus should be on the meaning of art, otherwise, those that claim to be pop artists, are merely graphic designers. I like to add grist to the mill. The classicism of the cultural environment in which I live, the modern way of painting united with the contemporaneity of my subjects, and the depth of the messages ensure each piece has personality. I play around with my paintings, aiming to reflect a message in a different and unconventional way. For example, I like to create a twist on magazine covers

and advertisements that express a certain reflection to others. To me, it’s all about addressing what can’t be seen in regular brand advertisements. I must always indulge in inspiration without fear or reverence. Lastly, tell us about your favourite, iconic pop art from the 1960s? My favourite piece of pop art is, the 'Big Electric Chair' by Andy Warhol (created in 1967), the piece reflects on death as a social event. Andy elevates the aesthetics of the artwork to represent an economic phenomenon, which literally feels like a 'punch in the stomach'. Valentini now travels the world as an internationally acclaimed artist, and although he holds a place deep in his heart for his home country, he sees the art industry in Italy as "not as adept as many other cosmopolitan cities, such as London, New York or Dubai”. He describes art as "the most important aspect of culture to influence people" with the unmortgaged power to break rules and convey a profound sense of reflection that cannot always be described through location. Despite his young age, he has done numerous exhibitions across the globe receiving great approvals among critics and audiences. ✤

ver brunch at Flair No.5, The Ritz-Carlton DIFC’s foliage-filled rooftop restaurant, our dining companion tells us that she has a high-rolling friend who practically lives at the hotel. She’s tried countless competitors in the area but comes back every time because of the unbeatable service. American tycoon and founder of J.C Penney, James Cash Penney, famously said: “Courteous treatment will make a customer a walking advertisement.” It is evident, during our two-night stint at the five-star hotel located in Dubai’s Financial District that this ethos beats at the heart of every member of The RitzCarlton DIFC team. But first impressions first, which begin as our taxi swings into the hotel’s impressive black marble entrance courtyard – to the right a cluster of alfresco tables are filled with the buzz of locals and visitors enjoying coffee and freshly-baked treats at casual ground floor café Cake. In the gleaming lobby, a small gaggle of guests are lining up to
check in but, to our surprise (its 2pm on a Friday – AKA peak tourist time), we’re waiting barely ten seconds before we’re ushered to the front and embark on the first of many delightful encounters with the efficient and friendly staff. Our 7th floor Premier Room is probably the only part of The RitzCarlton DIFC experience that doesn’t feel entirely polished. Its size (huge bed decked with that five-star linen that never feels the same at home, imposing dark-wood desk, silk-lined window-seat flanking one wall) is more than generous, and the cleverly designed bathroom gleams with the luxury of stainless steel and marble, but the décor feels a bit… tired. Like everything in Dubai, it’s hardly old (the hotel is currently celebrating its 8th anniversary) and although it's a beautiful space, there is certainly room for décor revamps. That being said, we sleep like a baby on a mattress fit for a princess and love the bathrobe so much we mourn having to get out of it and down to breakfast on both mornings. fact magazine

Which brings us nicely to the cuisine, an area where The Ritz-Carlton DIFC team earns every corner of those five stars. Our two-day hotel restaurant safari begins with The Secret Garden Brunch at Flair No.5 (helpfully named for those, like us, who never listen when they tell you which floor a restaurant is on). Taking place every Friday from 12pm to 5pm, this is very much a party brunch, which becomes clear the moment you step into the urban garden and hear it before you see it. The visuals might be delayed by the insistent beat of the Resident DJ, but they are worth the wait – the al fresco bar-cumrestaurant is teaming with photo-ops, from suspended floral garlands to oversized pots filled with wide-leafed plants creating an evergreen backdrop - stunning. Brunch at Flair No.5 is a high-octane few hours, a steady parade of sharing dishes served straight to the low-tables of raised lounge seating. It’s a format of which we
approve wholeheartedly, meaning we can perch happily watching expert-waiters whip up impressively named cocktails at the bar and sharply dressed regulars abandoning the eating part to dance and mingle in the melee. Highlights from the menu include crisp balls of arancini rich with mushroom and oozing with sharp Taleggio, firm lamb koftas kicked into gear by a sauce singing with cumin and mint, a selection of brightly-flavoured salads – one with burrata that is impossible to leave alone – and some seriously spicy and deliciously sticky chicken skewers. To finish, try to stop talking long enough to sample the fun ice pops (we didn’t and ended up with brain freezes from trying to save passion fruit stains on our skirts). A different experience but equally compelling, was Saturday Brunch at Le Cirque. Billed as a New York-based modish eatery and sister restaurant to its same-named Big Apple counterpart, it’s a classy affair and one that does bring to mind previous visits to NYC’s Upper East Side. Like any fine-dining restaurant worth its stark white table cloths, the service is immaculate – the black waistcoated waiters clearly trained to be charming, swift and completely unobtrusive. Wondering past a decidedly more refined clientele than the day before (no pumping music here, the Resident DJ is replaced with a resident clown as part of Le Cirque’s circus themed brunch) we spot wealthy doyens of Dubai and elegant families chattering cheerfully. Everything we sample from a set menu of eggs, main dishes, pastas and decadent desserts is top notch – a basket bulging with still-warm croissants, fluffy muffins and pastries oozing with fruit being an excellent start. Still full from the previous day, we kept it light with a sunshine yellow asparagus frittata and crunchy tuna fact magazine

nicoise but would recommend settling in for a few hours to tuck into the Whole Roasted Striploin with Roasted Potatoes and Lemon Meringue Pie. Our final Ritz-Carlton DIFC excursion comes in the form of a 60-minute massage at the spa. As to be expected by now, the wellness team is thorough and thoughtful – checking genuinely that any preferences are noted. The treatment itself is faultless, our small but powerful therapist determinedly kneading away any stress-induced knots with expert hands. Floating out in a cloud of lavender, we make the most of the steam room and serene relaxation area to maximise on detoxing time. The next morning, after another deep slumber, a farewell breakfast and an internal struggle not to steal that bathrobe, we find ourselves being speedily checked out by the same smiling team member we encountered 48 hours earlier. She’s not only as efficient as we remember, but genuinely concerned that our stay has been everything we wanted it to be. Leaving the lobby for the reality of our own apartment, we feel a tinge of envy for that lucky lady that lives there and can’t help but agree with JC Penny: if courteous treatment is the answer to good PR, then we should all be talking about the excellent team and service at The Ritz-Carlton DIFC. ✤

t’s easy to approach the Range Rover Sport Autobiography with a heaping dose of scepticism, it’s a large and super luxury SUV that comes in a slightly smaller package. Our first thought is – aah, it’s made for ladies who lunch, gents casually strolling down to the local golf club or young drivers going to grab coffee from the coolest café in town. But then you climb in and remember what makes sitting behind the wheel of a Range Rover so enjoyable: the plushness, the unfussy layout, the richness of the materials. And then you drive it, feel the solidity of the chassis under your seat, bask in its balletic manner even as it manages all that heft, soak up the quietness of the cabin at speed and think, “Everyone needs to drive one of these.” For a place like the UAE, where the car you drive can speak volumes about everything from your career to your lifestyle, your interests and your social scene, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography was clearly built to give drivers the elegance they so crave teamed with the top-notch performance they so need. Could this be the ultimate motoring experience? On one hand, the Autobiography option checks almost every box when it comes to the cabin and features which includes a premium audio system and controls, a sliding glass roof, softclose doors and perforated leather seats. On the other hand, the car features a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 pumping out 510hp and enough drive modes to defeat any terrain. It works with an admirable eight-speed automatic transmission that can include paddle shifters - the 60-mph sprint takes a mere five seconds with a V8. It’s like the partner of your dreams – only it will never argue with you about which songs to play during your leisurely drives around town! Anyone familiar with the Range Rover Sport models will immediately recognise the Autobiography’s more aggressive looking front face that makes it look sportier than the luxurious looking flagship Range Rover. The large wheels, the floating roof and the distinctive signature LED DRLs create a unique aura around the Range Rover Sport to help build a sporty, yet luxurious exterior. The cabin features a wonderfully clean layout with simple, easy-to-use controls that are ergonomically well placed. Also the right use of soft-touch materials, the leather stitched instrument panels create a wonderfully plush interior that leaves very little to complain about. There is more than enough space in the front and second rows, with large comfortable seats and lots of headroom. The cargo has plenty of storage space for anyone who can’t yet grasp the meaning of travelling light, which works great for UAE road trips and staycations. The cabin is quiet, as expected, and in sportier modes this Range almost feels quick on its feet. Body roll, similarly, is dampened in those higher modes. We didn't have any crazy weather to speak of, but when it did get a little breezy or we too a shortcut on the pavement, the car drove more than fine. Ideally, it would be an absolute blast to get the Autobiography off-road sooner rather than later. All petrol and diesel engines in the Range Rover Sport models are paired with an electronically controlled ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. True to the Sport tag, the Autobiography 60

handles really well at highway speeds, and with the 4WD, we’re sure that it is also equally competent offroad – this is what makes the car unique amongst a sea of road-focussed SUVs. Safety features on the Range Rover Sport Autobiography, and all other Range Rover Sport models includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, rearview camera, surround-view camera (not standard on SE or HSE), parking sensors, parking assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. An optional Driver Assistance Package adds blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition that can display the current speed limit. This might sound like the standard of what to expect but let us tell you – this car is SHARP. Take the drive from Dubai down to Abu Dhabi, we don’t have to remind you how often careless drivers can ruin your driving experience. In the Autobiography, the lane departure warning worked a treat, especially if you’re forced to move out of the way of a huge tank of steel constantly flashing you so they can get ahead. Equally useful is the speed limit monitoring which seemed to have all the updates to match the most current rules for UAE roads – something we were especially grateful for! Back inside the luxurious cabin, the touchscreens with the Touch Pro Duo system are canted toward the driver. Lo and behold there are dials that control different functions for the menu selected. Infotainment is at its peak with everything from being able to sync your phone, contacts, music and so on, as well as handling terrain management. Chassis/drivetrain/engine modes are sport, comfort and eco; and off-road modes are snow, sand, mud, and rock or crawling. What strikes us most about the Range Rover Sport Autobiography is its craftsmanship. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was this car. The fit and finish is excellent and the fittings top-notch – in fact, we were quite happy doing everything from running errands to attending business meeting and being the designated driver for an evening out with friends – simply to showcase how practical and beautiful the interior is. High-quality materials abound, whether leather, wood, metal, or plastic. If it looks like wood, it is wood. If it looks like metal, it's metal. They all look great and feel good. Even the cargo area is attractively finished. In front it feels just like the Range Rover, with a big view of the road, but the Sport's seats are a bit more cockpitlike. Not that we’re complaining because leg room is more than comfortable! When it comes to standout reasons for loving this car, it is always going to be the stellar power and good stopping force. The Range Rover Sport Autobiography really can do it all. It’s like the most stylish hustler on the roads; sweet on the eye and ferocious on the streets. There’s no compromise with this vehicle and it has little to no rivals in our books – a test drive will confirm this! ✤

Matagi is a contemporary Pan-Latin steakhouse laid out around a central show kitchen. Villamore promises sophisticated luxury via a combination of Mediterranean cuisine and exceptional views. OPA: FAIRMONT DUBAI Opa takes up residence in the space formerly home to Catch Dubai and transforms the nightspot into a Greek taverna. HAN SHI FU Dim sum lovers are bound to be delighted with Han Shi Fu, the latest opening from the team behind Din Tai Fung. Located in the Aloft Deira City Centre, Han Shi Fu promises three distinct dining areas and the menu promises some interesting dishes such Crystal Ray Crab Dumplings, Charcoal Gold Dust Umami Bao, Foie Gras Soup Dumplings, Hello Kitty Custard Cream Bao and Oxtail Bone Marrow. BLUEWATERS DUBAI The new lifestyle destination off the coast of JBR is home to Ain Dubai, the world’s largest observation wheel, alongside a number of exciting new dining destinations. First to open was Gordon Ramsay’s Hells Kitchen Dubai. Drawing inspiration from the celebrity chefs television show of the same name, competing teams will serve up signature dishes from the Las Vegas location such as Beef Wellington, eggs in purgatory and sticky toffee pudding! Next up is The London Project, described as “The ultimate curation of London cool, a destination dedicated to the very finest in food, drink, art, culture & unparalleled hospitality.” Finally, Alici is set to open in early 2019 and comes to us from the team behind popular Italian restaurant Il Burro Tuscan Bistro. W THE PALM The new W Hotel on the Palm Jumeirah is opening with at least two (that we know of) new F&B concepts. Torno Subito is an Italian concept from chef Massimo Bottura who you may recognise as the man behind the world’s number one restaurant of 2018 – Osteria Francescana. Translating to “I’ll be right back” this Dubai project marks Bottura’s first restaurant outside of Italy. Chef Akira Back will also bring his distinct Asian cuisine to the property. Back’s global portfolio includes restaurants in Jakarta, Bali, Bangkok, Las Vegas and Seoul (with the latter recently awarded a coveted Michelin Star) and we’re very excited to see what the first Middle Eastern outpost for this celebrity chef looks (and tastes) like. MAMA ZONIA From the team behind Weslodge Saloon and Hotel Cartagena, comes Mama Zonia. A fun and frivolous restaurant and bar on the second floor of Pier 7. AVLI BY TASHA’S Following hot on the heels of Natasha Sideris’ South African eatery, Tashas and her licensed venture, Flamingo Room by Tashas, comes Avli. A place inspired by “the rustic courtyards of the Mediterranean, where friends become family, food an occasion and moments a celebration.” This Athenian restaurant replaces La Luz at the Four Seasons DIFC and is scheduled for an early 2019 opening. MAREA Atelier House Hospitality are bringing two Michelin starred New York restaurant Marea to Dubai’s DIFC. SALAMA’S Now open in Abu Dhabi’s Al Bateen Marina, Salama’s offers a culinary journey around the world courtesy of Chef Stephan Benkendorff (previously of JW Steakhouse at the Marriott Downtown). THE ROYAL ATLANTIS The Royal Atlantis is rapidly taking shape on the Palm Jumeirah and in 2019 will become home to the Dubai outpost of Hakkasan, alongside three exciting new concepts. Celebrity Chef Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner by Heston will be the first to open and having dined at the London location, we suggest this is an opening to be VERY excited about (#meatfruit). Another celebrity driven concept, Chef Ariana Bundy will openAriana’s Perisan Kitchen with a capacity for 140 diners around an open show-kitchen that will showcase her signature dishes like Caspian-style filet kabab and rose-scented sea bass. Michelin-starred chef José Andrés will source ingredients directly from Spain for his Tapas concept Jaleo. Andrés is said to be the man who introduced Spanish “tapas” into the US through his modern approach to the traditional cuisine, so expect the unexpected. YAS MARINA Two new openings at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina have gotten the capital into quite a frenzy and although both The Scene and Mr. Miyagi’s have been doing strong business in Dubai for some time now it’s Abu Dhabi’s turn to get in on the action. The Scene by Simon Rimmer is famous for its weekend roasts and looks to bring a typical British gastropub to Yas Island. In direct contrast, Mr. Miyagi’s uses Asian street food and bucket cocktails to replicate the feeling of Bangkok’s Khao San Road or the full moon parties of Koh Phangan. THE DUCK HOOK & HILLHOUSE BRASSERIE The Dubai Hills Golf Club recently opened two new venues. The Duck Hook is a British gastropub in a relaxed environment with a menu of signature dishes including beef cooked three ways, Scotch eggs, confit duck and a host of pub grub favourites. Hillhouse Brasserie is a casual and family friendly establishment. Boulangerie by day, brasserie by night, the menu offers interesting choices such as Thai-baked monkfish with Kimchi rice and Unagi foie gras. Life in the hills just got very interesting. GO: Call 800 666353 for more info. THE ABU DHABI EDITION The Abu Dhabi Edition is now open in Al Bateen and represents a property that has been well-worth the wait. The small hotel is a unique entity in Abu Dhabi and feels very boutiquey. With the F&B spearheaded by Tom Aikens (the youngest British chef ever to be awarded two Michelin stars) there’s a lot of excitement surrounding British rock and roll steakhouse The Oak Room (review coming soon) and its unique cuts which include Spanish Rubia and Master Kobe. Italian spot Alba Terrace offers al fresco dining and a charming Mediterranean menu and we can also vouch for the fresh and organic produce from Market at The Edition, making a great new breakfast spot for Abu Dhabians. THE POINTE The Palm Jumeirah seems to be getting all the attention when it comes to restaurant openings this year. Located at the far end of the Palms ‘trunk’ The Pointe is currently home to over fifty restaurants ranging from causal fast food eateries through to fine dining establishments. Of the plethora of restaurants available, we’re most intrigued by Chicago Meatpackers with its menu of burgers, and steaks inspired by freight trains and cattle yards. We sincerely hope that Mama Pho may finally deliver us the authentic Vietnamese soup we’ve been longing to find since arriving in the UAE. • DINING CIBONEY’S With the arrival of Miss Lily’s and Ting Irie, it would appear that Dubai has finally worken up to the charms of Carribean food (and rum). It’s pleasing to see cuisine making a resurgence in the city with the opening of Ciboneys which will open soon in DIFC. An innovative Caribbean restaurant, bar and lounge will offer a relaxed sharing style service in a lovely atmosphere, which will exude the vibrancy of the Caribbean in an opulent colonial style setting. JUMEIRAH SAADIYAT ISLAND RESORT Jumeirah’s second foray into the capital brings us the Jumeirah Saadiyat Island Resort with its selection of dining options set against the azure waters of the Arabian Gulf. Tasca is the brainchild of culinary mastermind José Avillez and is named after the Portuguese word for tavern. ubai’s very own twin-towered five-star property has a plethora of romantic settings and carefully crafted menus ready for February 14. Team Fact had the opportunity to visit Japanese speciality restaurant Izakaya ahead of the big day to preview their Valentine’s offering. Situated on the 5th floor, the dark and atmospheric restaurant space is perfectly suited for romantic dining with evenly spaced tables tucked within atmospheric alcoves. The result is secluded privacy while also providing a wonderful vantage point to watch the sushi chefs in slicing and dicing at the raw counter or turning skewers upon the robata grill. For those in search of a more interactive dining experience, take a seat at the teppanyaki table where the chefs flip food and shoot flames with such theatrics, that you’re bound to be in for a memorable evening. Izakaya feels like the Kabukicho district of Tokyo with its neon lighting and colourful umbrellas suspended from the ceiling. There’s certainly a sense of playfulness and frivolity to proceedings with dishes labelled with cartoons of sushi rolls hand-in-hand that read “you’re my soy-mate.” With seven distinct courses, Izakaya has crafted an impressive Omakase menu that will be available exclusively on Valentine’s Day. The bespoke concept of Omakase comes from a Japanese word roughly translating as “I trust you” or “I’ll leave it up to you.” Rather than order a la carte, diners leave their meal completely in the hands of the capable chefs, who much like an orchestra,

will conduct the meal to ensure an experience showcasing the very best Izakaya has to offer. Our meal begins with the Wagyu Tataki in which the premium beef has been thinly sliced and marinated in a selection of Japanese herbs and seaweed. The marbling on the A5 Wagyu is immediately apparent, lightly seared on the outside and drizzled with a yuzu soy and punchy wasabi salsa which makes for a bold introduction to the world of Izakaya, and creates a burst of flavour to the palate that resonates long after the meal is over. Sushi and sashimi arrive next, with the sushi intricately constructed into the shape of a heart using compressed rice, salmon and avocado. There’s a distinct freshness to the fish, attesting to the quality ingredients, meaning the fatty tuna sashimi slices are purposely devoid of any seasoning or embellishment. It seems apt at this point to call for Izakaya’s in-house Wasabi girl! Like an anime character brought to life, Wasabi Girl has fluorescent green hair and is on-hand to grate fresh wasabi straight from the root for diners. If you’re really lucky she may even read your fortune! Course three comprises a roasted pumpkin soup made with pureed root vegetables, a touch of pumpkin oil and toasted pumpkin seeds for additional texture. The clean and hearty soup is undeniably creamy and works as a nice break from the meat and fish around which this particular menu is focused. What’s Valentine’s Day without lobster? Often regarded as a costly ingredient, there’s no expense spared at Izakaya whose

Ise Ebi Yaki presents a beautifully grilled half lobster in the shell. Complemented by a spicy miso sauce that provides an acceptable balance without overpowering the delicate flesh of the lobster. While the seafood is lovely, the accompanying cubes of wasabi sweet potatoes are wonderfully moreish! A palate cleanser of rhubarb, strawberry and rose sorbet turned more than a few heads during our visit and resulted in a number of orders for the kitchen. The sorbet is presented to the table amidst billows of dry ice and comes planted with a single red rose for extra romanticism. Wagyu appears again during the penultimate course and offers an entirely different flavour profile from the earlier tataki. Here it’s sticky and sweet beef short ribs thanks to a tamarind soy reduction that has been prepared following an extensive eight-hour braising process. Dessert is likely the most important course on a day associated with chocolates and strawberries and both ingredients are cleverly incorporated into the Manjari Chocolate Mousse. A dome of mousse covered in an impressive mirror glaze and adorned with edible gold. Providing a rich and decadent end to the meal and one that is likely to leave a lasting impression. The culinary team at Izakaya have done an admirable job in creating a Valentine’s menu that fully embraces the theme of love. With strong service from a team who aim to please, the seven-course menu is available on February 14 from 6pm to 1am and is priced at AED650 per couple, inclusive of one glass of bubbly each. A meal that’s absolutely worth the price tag! ✤

erched on the 52nd floor of the hotel, Soul Wellness & Spa promotes a sense of tranquility from the moment the elevator doors gracefully slide open. Bathed in natural light and designed in natural tones, punctuated sparingly with vibrant turquoise textiles. This particular spa benefits from the high elevation and the light colour palette is perfectly suited to a venue virtually situated within the clouds. For pre-treatment formalities we’re led to a secluded area of low-slung couches laden with cushions and a striking light fitting resembling the illuminated tendrils of a sea anemone. Refreshed with cold towels and hibiscus tea, we cannot help but admire the view through the glass facade down towards the Trade Centre neighbourhood with its manicured lawns and elevated metro tracks. There’s already a sense of relaxation sweeping over us! Bespoke is certainly the name of the game at this wellness sanctuary and even the pre-treatment form is quite expansive, allowing guests to decide on everything from the expected pressure of the massage through to the music selection - Indian, Meditation or Energetic? With formalities completed we’re led past billowing curtains and into genderseparated changing areas which are more than just showers and lockers. Clad in natural stone the spacious relaxation areas feature a sauna and steam room, a large stone jacuzzi and a number of day beds that beckon you to lay down and don’t disappoint in providing the utmost comfort. Dotted with alcoves full of candles, the peaceful relaxation area can be used pre and post treatment. But we digress… back to the Couples Dream Ritual and it’s pleasing to find a spa that has created a treatment that couples can actually enjoy together! Clocking in a two hours, the treatment begins with a 60-minute Soul Spa Signature Couples Massage from a team of experienced therapists that left us feeling revitalised. Two massage beds lay side by side beneath a ceiling embedded with dozens of twinkling LEDs, as if the experience is taking place beneath a night sky which certainly helps to ramp up the relaxation factor. Massages can be customised, to focus on particular areas of the body and we found the pressure to be just right to iron out all the stress-induced kinks in our neck and shoulders. Often following a massage you feel rushed to vacate the treatment room, but this is not the case with the Couples Dream Ritual which aims to combat this feeling by

eeling fatigued? Try a treatment rich in vitamins. Got dry skin? Try an exfoliating body polish. How about tight, aching muscles? Well, a tailored massage ought to sort that out. There is, literally, a treatment for every health and beauty qualm in 2019. Check any spa or salon’s service menu and you’re likely to find everything from holistic healing therapies to more stateof-the-art (and, often, pricey) modern methods to aid in tackling your concerns. But, how many of you can get behind the idea of spending thousands of dirhams for a “quick-fix” – something that will likely need to be topped up or leave you with average results? I can’t. No way. Being the skeptic that I am when it comes to treatments that are designed to target a specific body issue, I found myself going to experience Tips and Toes’ Green Coffee Body Wrap with zero expectations, but a completely open mind. After all, if anything, this was the chance to unwind and possibly nap for an hour – I was ready. Why did I choose this treatment? For one, unlike the average social media model out there, my ancestors have blessed me with beautiful deposits of cellulite. Now, I say “beautiful” because out of my many life concerns, cellulite is pretty low on the list. Really, it doesn’t bother me. I am rather relaxed about the appearance of this dimpled, slightly lumpy skin around my thighs. Google tells me that cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin, and my Insta Discover page feed tells me another story altogether. Apparently, cellulite is a hard no-go for bikini lovers and beach bums (not true) – something about it not being so attractive? As an almost 30-year-old woman, I’m quite comfortable ignoring these unrealistic images, however, I know that many others are not. And cellulite seems to be the one image-related body issue that drives people crazy. In a place that’s full of beach clubs and fancy pools, the pressure to look pristine can outweigh the importance of loving the body you’re in. So, I was hoping that the Green Coffee Body Wrap was going to restore my faith in believing the hype that surrounds such targeted remedies – and, hopefully, become a genuine recommendation for all the ladies fighting that good fight against the pesky cellulite. It’s no surprise when my therapist, Gloria, a veteran at Tips and Toes, informs me that this is one of the most popular treatments on their list. With a price tag of just AED262.50, it’s also one of the most affordable ways in which to bust the pockets of existing cellulite. As I said, if it works – amazing. If it doesn’t, there’s no love lost. The main focus of the wrap is to slim and tone your body with a cutting edge mix of product and method. It is supposed to stimulate your body’s ability to break down fat (noticeably, I have this), to increase metabolism (that would be a bonus) and to eliminate water retention (I seem to be able to store liquids as well as a camel can). fact magazine

Gloria begins with wiping down the feet with a hot towel and easing out the body with gentle strokes. She explains that the treatment will show immediate results, but for long-term success, a course of five to six is recommended – just as predicted. I like Gloria. She gets straight to the point. Her advise in so many words is that the treatment works wonders but it’s not a permanent solution for cellulite. Instead, she highly encourages clients to eat healthy, smaller portions more often, and to exercise regularly. All of these lifestyle changes will aid in achieving better results with the Green Coffee Body Wrap. Way to keep it real, Gloria – brilliant! She proceeds to scrub down the entire body using pure 100 per cent micronised Green Coffee, naturally rich in Chlorogenic acid, Polysaccharides, Proteins and Essential Oils. From the shoulders to the stomach and down to the toes, a thorough scrub around the thighs and other affected areas like the glutes and upper arms, really feels like a vigorous massage meets relaxing lie-down. I enjoyed every minute. Then comes the best part. You’re wrapped in a plastic sheet and neatly tucked into a full-sized warm thermal blanket which zips up until the neck. It’s valid to say that anyone who has severe claustrophobia may not enjoy this treatment, however, if you savour the moment knowing it’s completely safe with the heat on and it’s working to reduce cellulite, you’ll likely fall into a sweet slumber for the next 20 minutes whilst the combo of scrub, wrap and blanket works its magic. I’m woken by Gloria shortly after and carefully ushered over to one of the shower rooms. First thing’s first – I am desperate to use the loo. This might be TMI (too much info), but it’s necessary TMI. 96

SPA & WELLNESS • It seems the instant work of the treatment has left my body in a state of detox, where toxins and excess water is wanting to come out. In fact, this happened at least another two times before I headed back to the treatment room. Well, that’s a tick for “eliminate water retention” – yay! A hot rinse and pat dry later, I feel smooth. I head back to hop on the spa bed and Gloria applies a lovely cream over the body, treating my muscles to occasional massage strokes. Now, I’m not saying that this treatment is a miracle, but it sure is a saviour. I noticed the most visible difference in the skin’s overall tightness and texture whilst more spongy areas were now patted out. This was almost instant – and really motivated me to go to the gym – I want skin like this ALL the time, I thought. Cellulite-busting treatments needn’t cost you the earth. In reality, the Green Coffee Body Scrub is a fabulous, fast and effective remedy, especially the day before you’re going to hit the beach or wear that extra special outfit. And if you want ultimate peace of mind, add a Swedish Massage on to the treatment and be prepared for Gloria’s magic. Her technique is unlike anywhere else in the UAE. She breaks through every tough knot in my shoulders and upper back – which is no easy feat. Gloria, I salute you. ✤
