Let Yourself Rest Self-care means giving yourself permission to pause." - Cecilia Tran

t seems rather trivial to be writing about stress and self-care, wellness and looking after yourself in 2019. Haven’t we already been there, done that? Surely, every single person reading this has had a wake-up call where you realise that taking time out for yourself isn’t something to feel guilty about – after all, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so recharging your batteries in whatever way you see fit is definitely a priority. It’s a surprise how many of us need to be reminded of this, and how often too. Without sounding like we’re preaching (let’s say it louder for the people in the back though), taking care of yourself is not something to be considered as a luxury, rather it’s a necessity. FACT is bringing that all-important reminder this month with a special feature that looks at the idea of burning out through the lens of my new favourite term of the moment – JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). Turn to p31 and join the discussion. Maybe it’s exactly what you need to hear right now – maybe you don’t agree with what we have to say – or, maybe, all you needed was a friendly reminder that saying no to plans, staying off social media for an evening or booking yourself in for a spa day, are all things you shouldn’t feel guilty about doing – especially if they benefit your emotional and mental wellbeing. We stay on the track of tackling stress on p36 at The Smash Room – one of Dubai’s most innovative yet simple and effective leisure concepts that help visitors release and tackle their frustrations through smashing appliances, bottles and other objects – all within a safe environment. And once you’ve smashed things up, check out our round up of some of the city’s best spa venues, starting p42. See what takes your fancy, pick a treatment and get yourself booked in. No excuses! For those looking to escape the Dubai bustle as a way of achieving their balance in mind, body and soul, our wellness trip just an hour away to Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara (p47) is just the calling you’ve been waiting for. Imagine, otherworldly surroundings that promote positivity and peace from the moment you step off the plane. This is the place to get your detox fix in the most healthy way. With direct flights to Salalah running from June onwards, now would be the ideal time to look into booking a visit at this stunning resort. You’ll find all our regular monthly recommendations from food to fashion, tech and travel, plus all the best local hotspots and happenings to keep you all occupied throughout April. Of course, if you haven’t been living under a rock for the past eight years, you’ll know that there is only ONE thing the rest of the world is waiting for this month: April 14, Season 8, Game of Thrones. Need I say more? Until next month, up your self-care game and smash that stress away!☺

PERFECTLY PLAYFUL If ain’t broke, don’t fix it – right? But you have to admit that a few clever tweaks and exciting additions are always a welcome bonus. This is the PLAY mantra when it comes to their awardwinning menu, which has had a tasty little facelift. KEEPING THE SIGNATURE FAVOURITES firmly in place, the menu at PLAY has welcomed new dishes including Wagyu Truffle Carbonara Barrel, Butter Chicken Gyoza and Blue Fin Tuna Tartar to join best sellers such as the Crispy Duck Salad, Mushroom Risotto Barrel and the all-time favourite – Pita Surprise. Other newbies include the Popcorn Chicken, an array of classic and custom Nigiri as well as Tiger Prawns in an aromatic Green Curry. New sweet offerings like the beautiful white chocolate Mango Coconut cake and decadent 64 per cent Manjari ‘Chocolate Bar’ dessert takes pride of place next to the irresistible original masterpiece: the ‘Sneaker Bar’ which is still stunningly accompanied by deliciously crunchy caramelised pistachios and soft flavour-filled pistachio ice cream. “We have continued with the fun ethos of what makes PLAY what it is and built on that by introducing a few new things,” explains Head Chef Santiago. “Rather than a brand new menu, we’ve evolved and enhanced the current one. We’ve moved it forward; keeping the classics that we love and everyone keeps coming back for and added more, so you can fall in love with PLAY all over again. “One of my favourites is the Chicken Gyoza,” he continues. “We cook a classic butter chicken and then make it into gyoza with butter chicken sauce and a little bit of yoghurt – it’s amazing! We’ve also added Grilled Octopus as there was no octopus on 12

the menu. I’m from Spain, so I love it. It’s served with a warm potato salad, pomegranate, olives and coriander aioli.” Another notable new dish is the delicious Beef Rice, which is a play on paella, inspired by Chef Santiago’s Spanish heritage. Play Restaurant & Lounge is as famed for its stylish and playful atmosphere as it is for ingenious and inventive culinary creations, and the new additions to the menu are in perfect harmony with that excellence. ✤

IS THIS THE YEAR OF JOMO? What brings you inner peace? Are you REALLY happy? These seem to be the questions of the moment. In 2019, we’re being encouraged to declutter and get back to basics, but is this even possible for a generation that is driven by motivational speakers, busy calendars and 24/7 digital connections? FACT’s Shabana Adam digs deeper…

fact magazine

oy. A small three-letter word. It’s been weighing heavy on my mind for a while now. It also seems to be creeping into every conversation these days. Fact: it’s becoming harder to avoid the current angst surrounding the “do what makes you happy” wave of inspirational memes and quotes that fill up our social feeds every day. The buzzword of the moment, “joy” has a direct link to the one pursuit we’re all secretly – or not so secretly – going on: “how I can fix my life?” – followed by a trail of thoughts that involve decluttering socially, professionally, emotionally and existentially. In other words, remove those things that don’t spark joy in your life and you’re good to go. Sounds pretty simple, right? Wrong. And I don’t think you’ll be surprised to ready why. In his book, The Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) – philosopher and psychologist Svend Brinkmann, who coined the term JOMO in response to the popular hashtag #FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), talks about the forceful pressures of living in modern day society. The idea that you always need to be doing more: going out more, being invited to more events, getting involved in more activities, acquiring more possessions, and overall just being more. In a world of TED Talks and life coaches, social media influencers and creative advertising, these growing burdens have become an extension of our own minds. “We are constantly invited to do something, think something, experience something, buy something… it is sometimes difficult to distinguish what is important from what is not,” Brinkmann writes. In the Gulf, especially, life clutter builds up when we fill our calendars with social events that we don’t really want to go, too many sale items that take up unnecessary space in our closets, toxic relationships with negative thoughts and feelings, or work tasks that we say yes to when they’re not actually our responsibility (you know where I’m going with this). You see, the idea of decluttering to feel joy could indeed lead us to freedom and contentment – at least, this is what Brinkmann is proposing. But all of this comes from being able to say another very important word – no. YOU CAN DO IT: SAYING NO After reading his book, I felt a sense of validation for something that doesn’t actually require society’s permission: the ability to say “no”. No, I don’t want to go for dinner with you on Friday night, I’d rather sink into my rarely-used couch and read a book. No, that party sounds too rowdy for me, let’s see each other another day for a more intimate coffee or lunch, and, for the sake of my tired eyes and sanity: no, I can’t make it to your last-minute event even if there’s free food and a gift bag because, honestly, I just don’t care enough to dress to impress on a Tuesday night after a 12-hour work day. Sound familiar? Brinkmann’s book has taught me something that a lot of us have forgotten, or pushed to the side because it might be considered “rude” or “too honest” – that is, if you don’t want to do it, JUST SAY NO. It seems like the most logical response to any feelings of being overwhelmed, overworked, and overstressed. Saying no means you’re actually putting yourself first. Giving yourself time to take a break from all the disorder of the world that is made up of insta-stories or online shopping, or simply, too many uninteresting, meaningless conversations. Surely, it sounds like a mantra that should be ingrained into human nature, so why is the idea of JOMO and in particular the act of saying “no” such a difficult concept to grasp? You might struggle to say no in various situations for a number of reasons – the underlying fear that people will think you’re lazy or not trying hard enough, that saying “no” will make you unlikeable so, instead, we form a compulsive pattern of “yes” to erase self-doubt and to keep those around us happy. Subconsciously, this is the lifestyle many of us live here in the Gulf and, in my opinion, saying “no” is one of the realest forms of holding onto the genuine in a society that’s filled with privileges, convenience and, sometimes, tunnel vision, where it’s easy to lose yourself. 32

TAKE NOTE: SELF CARE How much longer can we really continue to live at the pace we’re living at? Feelings of living detached, unsustainable lives have become prevalent in the region. A number of scattered data reveals that anxiety and depression is rife in this part of the world, according to a 2018 article on Al-Fanar Media: “A 2009 study screened 1,552 adolescents in Saudi Arabia and found the most common mental-health problem was anxiety. A 2005 study concluded that 16 percent of Lebanese adolescents had suicidal thoughts.” According to other global studies, the Middle Eastern region suffers from the highest rates of depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and suicide. It’s challenging to find any accurate and reliable data that monitors

growth, decline, overall progression, patterns and possible triggers about mental health in the region, but many issues have been talked about before: stigmatisation, lack of physical activity, work pressures, environmental factors, biological causes – all of which are mirrored in most parts of the world amongst youth and young professionals. Therefore, it’s so important, now more than ever, to take care of your inner and outer wellbeing - with equal attention. “Overwhelmed is pretty much my middle name,” says Amal Absiye, a full-time English teacher living and working in Abu Dhabi. “I often feel as though I'm swimming both at work and home. My job requires a lot of my time. My days are often long and exhausting ones. As a teacher, I'm sure many can relate when I say that I often feel as though I'm losing ground every day and I'm forever trying to make it up the next day. It’s a never-ending cycle,” she continues. “I don't have the kind of job where I clock in and clock out each day. My work follows me home and so much of my intended me-time turns into having to invest extra time into my work.” So, how does she cope with creating a work-life balance? “Ever since I started eating well and going to the gym, I feel as though this has really helped me cope with stress,” Amal shares. “That one hour to 90 minutes I put in, allows me to truly focus on me and almost kind of escape. Exercising regularly has helped with my health (physical and

fact magazine

mental), my mood, and my overall productivity at work.” For Amal, she’s found her “thing” – a hobby, an activity, that one part of her routine that’s purely dedicated to herself. No strings attached, just simple metime. And this is something she has come to understand as a result of many years of juggling life’s clutter. “I feel as though I've found that work-life balance that I've craved for so long,” she says. “Having felt burnt out for so long, I've found that happy medium between work life and personal life. Work never ends, and I've learned that what doesn't get finished today can be completed tomorrow,” she smiles. “This has proven beneficial for not just my physical health, but my mental health too.” DEVIL IN DISGUISE: SOCIAL MEDIA Need a virtual talking to, what about some motivation for the gym, or how about your daily dose of lols with memes – there’s an app for it all. A while back, we had a dig at trying to unravel the challenges of a digital detox: what are the signs for when we need a break from the digital world? Whether we like it or not, we are creatures of social media; the Arab Social Media Report 2017 found that 90 per cent of the online population in most Middle East countries use social networking sites, daily. 34

This might be for personal use to stay in touch with family and friends or for business purposes to build a brand’s reputation, either way it’s clear that we have been well and truly infected with the social media bug. And there’s no rush for a cure anytime soon. But what happens when all the noise gets a bit too much? Sometimes, there’s nothing more soothing than reading a motivational post just when you need it. Other times, there’s nothing more therapeutic than unfollowing that person who adds nothing of value to your timeline. Dare I say it – social media has become the number one reason for unwanted clutter in many of our lives. Whether it’s for positive reasons like following your favourite entrepreneur or getting tips from a bona fide mommy blogger, or if you’re stalking your high school lab partner’s other half, whatever the reason may be – a life before hashtags and IGTV and subscribe buttons seems like a million years ago. The key, like most of the things that could lead to joy, is balance. Juan Jimenez, a Data Analyst living in Abu Dhabi, says: I believe social media is shaping many aspects of our lives; self-care and stress management are perhaps among the main topics. In regard to self-care, I follow people that share tips about gym routines, skin care, healthy eating and fashion,” he continues. “Some of their tips are helpful and easy to add to my daily routine. In terms of stress, yoga and optimising your time when you have a super busy agenda, these are all topics that are usually promoted by “self-made” business people or famous celebrities. Even though this may be a source of motivation, I do believe stress management should be based on realistic lifestyles,” he admits.” Social media is a portal that allows people to portray the life they want the world to see but not the life they actually live. So, I try my best to keep it real," Juan adds.

stay in, adopt JOMO like it’s your new best friend, self-care like you’ve never done before – spa, gym, therapy, alternative medicine – find YOUR thing, and, most of all, disconnect and recharge those batteries as often as you need to. For me, admittedly, I do find my joy in JOMO. Or at least being in control of when to say yes and when to say no. But, mostly, I find joy in the places I’m not looking for it: spontaneous hugs from my friend’s beautiful children, laughter in coffeeshops with loved ones that I don’t get to see as much as I’d like to, a surprise text from family members announcing a wedding or a birth, or when a really interesting podcast episode helps to get me through an hour’s workout every day. Henri J.M Nouwen says: “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” Seems like something fleeting, you feel it and then it disappears, you aspire it like a solid state of mind but, joy, much like the hashtagged acronym it inspired, is either momentary or an entirely self-made way of life. To that I say: raise the bar, put joy on a pedestal, be honest and real about what brings you joy and, for the sake of your emotional, physical and mental wellbeing, please feel free to say NO. ✤

BURNOUT: WHAT TO DO Y3NY? If you feel yourself going from bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to seriously burnt out, it’s time for a hard look in the mirror. Left unchecked, burnout can wreak havoc on your health, happiness, relationships and job performance. Catch it early and do something about it: say no and fact magazine

Hi guys! Let’s jump right in… for someone who has never heard of The Smash Room, sum up the experience in one sentence? Hiba: A massage for your inner stress and pent up emotions! Ibrahim: Your Sanctuary; what happens at The Smash Room stays there! So, how does it work – you come with your friends and smash things up? Hiba: Yup! As simple as that. You grab your pals and a weapon of choice, get into a room and smash your stress away. Do you remember where and when you first thought of the idea for The Smash Room – tell us a little bit about its back story… Hiba: The idea for Smash Room was inspired by a difficult time in my life. My grandma passed away and the traditional, more peaceful mechanisms of coping with grief just weren't cutting it. So I took old junk into the backyard and smashed it to bits, and it made me feel massively better. Right then, came that light bulb moment. This is a freaking good idea! Would you say that a trip to The Smash Room is a good stress reliever? Hiba: Good is an understatement. As Trump would say, it’s HUGEEEEEE! Our customers would agree with Trump too! Ibrahim: I am pretty sure that’s the only thing our customers will agree on with Trump! You recycle all the items that are “smashed” – tell us more about how this process works… Ibrahim: We work with partners to make this happen, simply the process starts by segregating the items, metals from electronics then being collected and sent to recycling on a weekly schedule. Who/which type of clientele is The Smash Room most popular with, or do you get visitors from all walks of life? Hiba: Women. Viva Girl Power! We get a lot of women but from all walks of life. Women are comfortable expressing all their emotions. There’s still this taboo around men “expressing” themselves. We are trying to break that stereotype. No pun intended. 36

• THE SMASH ROOM What has the feedback been like from visitors – any memorable stories you can share with us? Hiba: We had a guy come down three times in one day during his breakup. We actually kept The Smash Room open beyond working hours to accommodate him. The poor guy needed it. Dating in this tinder-era is stressful! Ibrahim: A Japanese tourist walked all the way from Mall of The Emirates to The Smash Room in peak summer to smash some s**t then went all the way back walking; his smile stayed longer than the sweat on his t-shirt. What’s next for The Smash Room – share with us some of the goals for 2019… Hiba: Franchising is part of our growth plans in 2019. We are also coming up with creative ideas for new things to smash. For our first year anniversary, we are releasing the EPIC SMASH where we are giving 10 people the opportunity to smash a car! Ibrahim: Yes, expanding around the world using our franchise system; and keep innovating around the concept. And, of course, a moving smash bus room-in-a-bus anyone? ✤

The Smash Room also gives back to charities such as Melltoo and Emirates Red Crescent. Why was it important to you to have this connection with a worthy cause? Ibrahim: I have wanted to do this since we started, and it took us a couple of months to make it happen. We started this in Ramadan last year and never looked back. It is simply who we are as individuals, a team and as a brand! In your opinion, what has made The Smash Room a success? Hiba: The idea! Dubai needed a new recreational idea - something unique and innovative. The Smash Room fits that gap. Ibrahim: Amen to that, and the execution too; The Smash Room is very unique. You can’t get the same vibe and feel anywhere else in Dubai. Any advice for budding entrepreneurs who want to start up small businesses but might be afraid of the risks? Hiba: Nothing in life comes without risk! In this economy, your job can also be at risk. If you are passionate about an idea, and your heart tells you to do it, just jump in. If you fail, you learn, if you succeed, you grow. WIN-WIN! Ibrahim: Choose carefully who you partner with; Hiba and I are so different yet our skill sets compliment each other hence the perfect match. And yes, the team; they either make it or break it so I would spend more time and effort into team selection and nurturing each one of them. 38

The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi

hen you hear the words ‘wellness retreat’ what comes to mind? Maybe you think of 6am yoga classes and intense daily workouts, interspersed with wheat grass shots and salads that are green enough to test your human limitations. Whatever your notion is, let it go and let’s start fresh. Forget about intermittent fasting, juicing, calorie counts and perfect flexibility. Instead, concentrate on your inner wellbeing – your mind and body connecting to come clean. This is exactly the soulful journey we embarked on during a visit to the luxury resort of Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara. ARE WE STILL IN THE GCC? In a region where many seek the solace of wilderness for the sake of their human spirit and the necessity of their personal peace, Salalah is the kind of place that can help you put a true perspective on life. As a destination, it offers you the kind of landscapes that speak to your soul; silent, rocky wadis, turquoise waves lapping white sandy shores and plenty of mountainside moments – where you might just spot a tribe of goats moving over rugged ground, or a family of cheekylooking camels resting calmly as 4x4 vehicles whizz by. It is the Middle East after all, and Salalah offers raw, unfiltered surroundings without a single skyscraper in sight. Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara has every luxury and comfort you could dream of; starting from personalised greetings to a kitchensized mini bar and even a soap menu. They’ve really thought of it all. There’s no compromise on convenience and you’ll quickly start to slow down and appreciate every little detail (we loved the complimentary beach bag, hat and frisbee in the room), something that is so easily lost in the hustle of life in the Gulf. BALANCE WELLNESS PROGRAMME Once we’re well acquainted with the stunning One-Bedroom Garden View Pool Villa, we head for a consultation with our Wellness Guru, Ratheesh, at Anantara Spa. After filling out a questionnaire that specifically asks questions related to your emotional, mental and physical wellbeing, including things like “how quickly do you get angry” and “do you have any particular pain in the body to target” – Ratheesh establishes our individual needs and goals of the three-day Balance Wellness Programme. We’re not weighed and our BMI isn’t checked – two things we were expecting to happen at consultation stage. However, it quickly becomes clear that this programme isn’t designed to be a military-style boot camp of regimented exercise and eating, instead you’re encouraged from the onset to choose light daily activities alongside nutritious dining options that will aid in really restoring your internal pipes, so to speak, to their purest form. All the while, you’ll be aiding your body’s natural way of working with three healthy meals a day, fresh juices to top up and stay hydrated, and, of course, a host of activities and treatments that go hand-in-hand with your selected diet. We were ready! DAY ONE If you’re someone who eats sporadically throughout the day or if you’re not used to eating the recommended daily intake specified for your age, gender, body type and so on, then day one is likely to be a little testing – but far from impossible. Breakfast at Sakalan is like walking into a bona fide food paradise; served in the stylish dining room or 48

on the terrace beside the infinity pool, there’s a full-to-the-brim buffet packed with pastries galore (the vanilla cruffs are well worth biting into), a fruit station, egg counter, cereal and bread for days, healthy smoothies and juices to kick-start your system, and all the indulgent favourites including brick-sized French Toast, Pancakes dripping in maple syrup, savoury classics like Eggs Florentine and even a host of Arabic, Chinese and more worldly options. What we’re saying is – be ready (and behave!). Day one of the programme remains our favourite, all thanks to the resort’s Salalah Guru, Hussain. Without exaggerating, Hussain may just be the best guide you could ask for on an excursion – in this case, a Mountain Hike. He shares with us stories about growing up in a mountain society, how life was as simple as a glass of milk and a piece of bread back then, and, probably the most endearing tale – the Salalah community has set up a WhatsApp group to help each other, and those less fortunate who reside there, with any financial and medical problems. If an issue arises on the group: “you can give even five or ten riyals each and people give something, whatever they can, to help the person,” Hussain says. This, we thought, was exactly the good-natured character we’d experienced of the Omani people and their ways. We drive deep into the wadi on the Dhofar Mountains which resembles something that is easily a cross between the worlds of Mad Max and Jurassic Park. Hussain tells us that in a few months, these empty spaces will be filled with water. We navigate a labyrinth of rocks; white, brown, craggy earth, working up a respectable sweat (for people who haven’t hiked in a LONG time) and admiring the sparse vegetation and wildlife when it appears. It’s windy when we visit, and the breeze helps to keep us going at a steady pace – however, we’d highly recommend wearing a hat and sunscreen. Hussain then drives us to one of his “secret” spots – a place that could easily bring a tear to the eye. Over the edge of a cliff, serene blue water glides onto white sand like something you would only expect to be conjured up on Photoshop – we were lost for words – even more so when Hussain takes just minutes to trek down to the beach and etch “Anantara” in the sand, all for the sake of our insta-stories – LEGEND. We return refreshed and ready for the first meal of the wellness fact magazine

programme – Avocado Tartare (starter), Red Lentils and Tomato Casserole (main) and Carrot Cake with Dark Chocolate Frosting and Goji (dessert). The three-day package includes a three-course lunch and dinner, which you get to personally choose from the Wellness Cuisine menu. All meals and wellness drinks are brought straight to your room or villa, making it pretty smooth to stick with the agenda of the day. We expected the food to be quite basic and small-sized portions, but we were pleasantly surprised. Central to the success of the wellness programme, the specially-designed cuisine is the brainchild of expert vegan-vegetarian chef Valeria Agnelutto. This healthy, cleansing cuisine is designed to maintain your energy and levels during the entire programme while providing you with all the elements that your body needs to detox. We felt it almost immediately. Firstly, every course is oozing flavour – something that is often difficult to attain with vegan and vegetarian ingredients – but is achieved here, so perfectly. The portions are a good size – not excessive but definitely filling. And we notice that our bodies are digesting the food we’re eating with much more vigour and imminence. Before dinner, we head to the spa for a luxurious hammam treatment. Drawing on centuries of Arabian wellness – the ancient ritual starts with a muscle-relaxing steam bath in preparation for a black soap cleansing and kessa mitt exfoliation to sweep impurities. Once steamed 50

and scrubbed, a Moroccan Rhassoul treatment richly nourishes and rehydrates, leaving the skin silky soft. It’s the complete opposite of our morning hike; just what our bodies needed. The robust scrubbing seems to have washed away any internal negative thoughts as well as the actual dead skin too. By the time dinner arrives, we’re in our robes, ready to eat up and get a good night’s sleep. One thing this wellness programme has triggered is our body clock – it’s getting back in tune with daylight and darkness, which means that we fall into a deep slumber with bellies full, prepared for more nourishment the next day. DAY TWO Day two takes a more chilled-out turn. After breakfast and the first wellness drink of the day, we head straight for the beach where the next few hours is spent shifting between a fair amount of beach walks and topping up the tan. This is one thing we really appreciated about the programme – it allows enough spare time for us to relax and do our own thing. Of course, we headed back into our impressive villa for both lunch and dinner, where the chickpea burger with rosemary and parsley with veggie mayo and the carrot and cashews smooth soup are both highlights. Ingredients are rich and the taste is what we’d easily call Michelin-standard. In between the two meals we opted for our second wellness therapy: the 60-minute Abhyanga Massage, which is designed to restore balance. The ancient healing massage uses herbinfused oils that are gently warmed and lightly massaged into the skin using soothing friction strokes. As the oils penetrate the skin, toxins and impurities are loosened, reducing muscle tension and calming the nervous system. The massage is a great choice for those looking to harmonise their mind and body. The therapists, including wellness guru Ratheesh, are both professional and thorough – we leave the room in a complete state of zen. DAY THREE By the time we arrive at day three, there’s a pep in our step that wasn’t there when we’d arrived to the resort. Although activity has been light, we’re full of energy and the nutritious food we’ve been eating really

seems to have done the trick with balancing out our inner workings. We’re sleeping better, our skin is glowing and overall we feel fresher – no sluggish periods in the middle of the afternoon and no lethargic moments of zoning out for impromptu naps. In fact, we start our day with a 9am yoga class in the spa garden and even manage to make it to the gym a little later on for a cardio hit. The food continues to impress with standouts being the special miso soup and the vegetables fettucine with spinach pesto and cherry tomatoes. The menu is serious foodie goals – even for die-hard carnivores, it’s a big change – but one that’s really worth it. PERSONAL WELLNESS GOALS Ask us again what we think of when the words ‘wellness retreat’ crop up, and we’ll answer: the active process of making better choices towards a healthier mind, body and soul – both inside and out. If there’s one thing you’ll find at the end of your Balance Wellness Programme at the serene Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, it’s that this could very well be the beginning of a constant, conscious pursuit of truly living your best life. ✤

Five top Spring things to do in Ireland Crisp, pale-blue skies, bright sunlight and lengthening days form the perfect backdrop to a spring break in Ireland. In springtime, Ireland’s landscape moves out of the winter shadows and becomes a technicolour canvas crowded with yellow daffodils, green fields and budding trees. Here are five ways to make your own picture postcard memories.

Visit a sheep farm Maybe not the first thing you’d think of, but who can resist the cuteness of new-born lambs that dot the island’s hills in spring? Lots of farms let you visit to meet the lambs and marvel at the skills of the sheepdogs at work. Call in for a tour of Killary Sheep Farm in County Galway, where sheep roam freely on the mountain overlooking beautiful Killary Fjord on the Wild Atlantic Way. Or if you’re on a Dublin city break, head for the Family Farm at Dublin Zoo where lambs, calves and pygmy goats are among the most popular residents.

Tee it up early Golf is already in full-swing in Ireland by the time pros tee it up at Augusta for the Masters in April. As the smell of freshly cut grass and blooming flowers permeate the pristine air, springtime is ideal for an inspirational Irish golf trip. Best of all, world-class courses like Royal County Down, Waterville, Royal Portrush and Ballyliffin are easier to book before the busier summer months kick in. Dust off those clubs and get swinging.

Pop into a park Ireland is an island of keen gardeners and spring is the

perfect time to witness the results of their hard work in the birth of buds and blossoms. The Belfast Botanic Gardens are spectacular, as are the grounds of Blarney Castle in County Cork. To enjoy wild beauty, head to Dublin’s Phoenix Park, one of Europe’s biggest city parks, and wander with the fallow deer across the green expanse.

Hit the highlights In summer Ireland’s top attractions are heaving with visitors but in spring you can enjoy easy access to the most popular locations. Stand a while on the famous Cliffs of Moher drinking in the Atlantic views, or climb over the majestic Giant’s Causeway without having to queue. Tour the Game of Thrones filming locations at your leisure or take your time marvelling at the Book of Kells in Trinity College Dublin.

Walk off winter Spring is the time to shake off the winter torpor and get out into nature, and Ireland is the place to do it. With wonderful walking trails across the island there is a forest, hill or cliff top path for everyone. Hike the tail end of the mighty International Appalachian Way that starts in the US and ends in the Donegal to Antrim chapter. Soak up the superb seascapes of the Causeway Coast Way or step back in time on the ancient Glendalough Lake Walk.

JOURNEYS OF ARABIAN SCRIPTS Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi’s creative hub for regional artists, opened its landmark exhibition, Nomadic Traces: Journeys of Arabian Scripts, in collaboration with Khatt Foundation.

fact magazine

he commissioned exhibition, curated by Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès, showcases six of the region’s scripts that have influenced the Middle East we know today including culture and communities. The exhibition features nine newly-commissioned works by artists from across the GCC and the Levant, and will highlight themes that speak to both the UAE and the Middle East more widely.

ARTISTS AND WORKS BEING EXHIBITED INCLUDE: YAD - Margherita Abi Hanna Yad draws on the Phoenician script, the world’s oldest recognized language, which inspires Abi-Hanna’s work as a Lebanese artist looking back to the ancient civilization that once called Lebanon her home. Yad, both the Phoenician and Arabic word for ‘hand’, embodies Phoenician text with five distinctive rings, made for each finger. Capitalizing on the abstract, simple geometry of the Phoenician script, Abi-Hanna created a twisted interpretation of the letter into a complex architectural form. The Sun Never Sets on the Empire - Sarah Alagroobi Sarah Alagroobi, the Emirati cross-disciplinary visual artist, explores geopolitical notions of both sovereignty and cultural agency through re-interpreting a phrase used by Western imperialists, ‘the sun never sets on the empire’, phonetically into Phoenician text. Sculpting the phrase into bright, neon lights, the piece subjects the audience to the experience of exposure to blinding light in constrictive space, speaking to the Eurocentric approach to cultural exploitation. From the Ashes and Into the Fire - Xeina AlMalki This work draws its inspirations from funerary reliefs of the ancient Palmyrene civilization. AlMalki, a Syrian national, was drawn to the Palmyrene script following the destruction of Palmyra in 2015. From the Ashes and Into the Fire recreates Palymrene text in three-dimensional clay sculpture, which were formed by hand, instead of using a mould, looking to explore the limitations of the clay and discover how the material can lend itself to larger designs. These sculptures come together to create a three-dimension memento mori of a civilisation turned to ash. And We Adorned the Nearest Heaven With Lamps - Nasser Al Salem Nasser Al Salem draws on the Mashq script from Hijaz as his inspiration for his spatial installation. The ancient Arabic script was dotless, used around 700 CE. Dots emerged into Arabic for non-native speakers as reading guides that helped to differentiate letters which shared the same base letter shape, and Al Salem uses the dot to guide the viewer through his piece. Al Salem, who is known for philosophical allusion within his 64

fact magazine

work, uses the dot, the line and the circle as an allegory for the metaphysical schema we collectively inhabit, and how modern life breaks from connecting with that which lies above us. Typographic Souvenirs of Arabia - Rasha Dakkak This installation uses six separate scripts: three living scripts and their corresponding ancestral scripts: Arabic, Latin and Hebrew, and Nabatean, Phoenician and Aramaic. Rasha Dakkak, a Palestinian designer, seeks with this installation to remind that the languages spoken by billions across the world originate from one common ancient tongue from the Arab East. Dakkak, through creating a cross-sectional letterform from an ancient script through to its living equivalent, has created souvenirs of this ancient Arab language with objects that trigger conversations on origin and on provenance. Maktoob - Nadine Kanso ‘Maktoob’, meaning ‘written’, has a variety of meanings in Arabic: to be physically written, to be written for posterity, to be a proof of authenticity or to be predestined. Maktoob, which draws on the geometrical Musnad script, builds into Kanso’s portfolio of jewelry design, and seeks to ask what it truly means to be ‘written’ when possessing an Arab identity. To be an ‘Arab’ is to both belong to an ancient people and to be part of a major global community, and so in this piece, Kanso combines the ancient script of Musnad with the later script of Arabic, providing a fresh forum for contemporary design on identity. Silk Rogue Kimabaya - Milia Maroun In Silk Rogue Kimabaya, fashion designer Millia Maroun combines the ancient script of Phonecian from West Asia with the modern Japanese script of Katakan from East Asia. Through the unification of the two scripts, through horizontal and vertical patterns, Maroun seeks to highlight the fluidity of the act of writing itself, creating an open map of uncharted roads that allude both to a passage across the continent and a passage through time from the age of gold and silk to the modern day. Maroun brings these elements together in a nomadic hybrid of culture: the kimono and the abaya, or the Kimabaya.

If Speech Is Silver - Khalid Mezaina The collection of garments used for If Speech Is Silver are a textile wrap, a talismanic shirt and a sarong, which use the metal of silver as their starting inspiration. Mezaina sought to reinterpret mystic, ancient beliefs regarding the use of silver and of talismanic devices toward the modern day, and to do so he uses two scripts, Musnad and Aramaic, and applies them in the form of textile prints, assigning the letters mystical and protective powers. Through using textiles, he views scripts as passing beyond linguistic forms of communication that cross borders and, in this sense, become nomadic. Markab - Hamza Al-Omari Nomadism is often associated with land-based travel, yet AlOmari takes his inspiration from human movement across waters in his piece Markab, meaning ‘boat’ in Arabic. The history of these scripts depended on vessels, as Phoenician spread across the Mediterranean basin by water, and trade travelled the Persian Gulf through ships. In Markab, Al-Omari has created a stool using the olive wood used to make dhows. His design was inspired by the Mashq script, extending the script’s strokes into the design of the stool, which additionally combines Islamic arabesque geometry to create a minimal design which interprets Arabic calligraphy and appropriates them for a contemporary function. ✤ 66

The Best of Enemies WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

During the racially charged summer of 1971, Ann Atwater, an outspoken civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis, a local Ku Klux Klan leader, come together to co-chair a community summit on the desegregation of schools in Durham, N.C. What follows next changes their lives forever.

DIRECTOR: Robin Bissel CAST: Taraji P. Henson, Sam Rockwell, Wes Bentley

A civil rights drama starring Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell, The Best of Enemies helps evoke dialogue about the eternal humanity that is at the heart of this powerful story. Based on the book The Best of Enemies: Race and Redemption in the New South by Osha Gray Davidson, the film offers a beautiful look at this unlikely alliance that arose from one of the most unsettling times in America’s history. Ann Atwater (played by Henson), a civil rights activist in Durham, N.C., who battled KKK leader C.P. Ellis (played by Rockwell) for a decade until 1971, when the two agreed to co-chair a two-week community meeting to deal with a court-ordered school desegregation decree.

The much-anticipated follow-up to his acclaimed 2017 debut American Teen, Free Spirit features songs that were written all over the world. Offering a gamut of genres including disco to soulful R&B to pop, the album takes a darker and more grown-up turn than his debut project. Giving us more relatable content, Talk, a synth-pop slow jam encourages honest communication. Expressing his anxieties through music, the song fuses electronic beats with pop music and has a feel-good vibe that we adore. Khalid’s chill sound and youthful bravado is what makes him a winner. Keeping up his knack for catchy hooks and acoustically inspired grooves, My Bad talks about love and everything that comes with it. Featuring swirling yet delicate guitar tones, the heartwarming track has us deep in our feelings. Keeping his versatile and magical streak alive, Free Spirit is turning out to be one of the most soulful albums of the year. His consistency and talent have managed to amaze us again and we’re totally under his spell!

Amidst the Chaos By Sara Bareilles

Following a long wait, Sara Bareilles is back with a bang with her upcoming sixth studio album. Her first imminent album in six years, the new music has a rootsy sound and touches on everything from love to politics. Blessing us with some really beautiful music with the hit musical Waitress, a full-fledged album was much awaited from the singer. Celebrating female strength, the groovy, jazz-infused Armor offers a fitting message about sisterhood and defiance. The femalecentric anthem celebrates women and girls of different colors, orientations, ages and sizes, while also showcasing Bareilles’s musical prowess. Speaking about the therapeutic quality of art right now, the song couldn’t have come out at a better time. Another testament of the songstress’ mesmerising vocals, Fire talks about the acceptance of an ending relationship that wasn’t thrilling to begin with. Backed by acoustic guitar and a quivering beat, the single spotlights the strength of Bareilles’s delectable voice. She has definitely grown as an artist and as a songwriter.

When two 18-year-old girls go missing on their gap year in Thailand, their family is desperate, frantic with worry and thrust into the spotlight. Journalist Kate Waters always does everything she can to be first to the story, first with the exclusive, first to discover the truth. This time it’s personal as she can’t stop thinking about her own son who she hasn’t seen in two years since he left home to go traveling. As the case of the missing girls unfolds, they all realise danger is sometimes closer than you expect.

El Sur is a causal space where staff are friendly and jovial and unafraid to provide recommendations. During the lunchtime that FACT’s David Tapley visits, there is a distinct buzz on the terrace, as families gather over large dishes of paella and bountiful Spanish cheese boards. Get ready for a lesson in Spanish cuisine 101… fact magazine

n recent years, the Dubai food scene has followed the trend for Peruvian cuisine which has now subsided in favour of Greek restaurants which seem to be opening at an alarming rate throughout the city. It’s a shame that Spanish cuisine is so often overlooked in favour of other Mediterranean choices, but with such a reliance on differing meat products it’s easy to see why Spanish food has often been a difficult sell in the region. Thankfully, we have restaurants like El Sur to appease our appetite for chorizo, Spanish tortilla and (of course) paella. Located just off the lobby of The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort, El Sur’s interior offers a compact space that has been uplifted thanks to the clever use of mirrors and a living wall of verdant foliage, in an area that is also home to a rather well-stocked bar. Passing a free-standing sculpture of a bull waving a red flag created from tangled wires, we make a beeline for the outside terrace. Wrapping around a portion of the hotel’s external façade, the terrace is a pleasant space of simple wooden furnishings and a pagoda-style ceiling strung with dozens of filament lightbulbs. A peek through the palm leaves offers diners superb views of the azure Arabian Gulf waters and the manmade marvel that is the Palm Jumeirah. El Sur is obviously a popular spot that has attracted what appears to be a loyal following of regular patrons. A simple one-page menu presents the expected tapas favourites, including Iberian ham with brushed tomato bread, marinated olives and patatas bravas. We however are feeling much more ambitious and with El Sur’s premise revolving around traditional tapas with a contemporary twist, we fully embrace the sharing small plates and order a number of dishes. Beginning with the avocado cannelloni with marinated tuna and gazpacho jelly (AED79) the dish is rather ambitious and comprises of what is essentially a tuna tartare wrapped in layers of cool avocado. The tuna is nicely seasoned and the avocado brings an undeniable textural element but we’re left uncertain regarding the gazpacho jelly. The seabass ceviche (AED79) is another interesting choice, topped with passion fruit and accompanied by a raspberry sauce that adds vibrancy in terms of both visual and flavour. Despite the modern approach to Spanish cuisine, we actually favour the more rustic dishes that really help to emphasise the feel of a trattoria that El Sur so freely promotes. The Iberian charcuterie selection (AED79) showcases salchichon, lomo, jamon and chorizo and is an absolute delight, especially when paired with a glass of grape. The fiery patatas bravas (AED57) remind us of summer trips to Barcelona where we spent many hours strolling along Las Ramblas and visiting the La Boqueria food market. The paella though is the main draw and we would estimate the majority of our fellow diners ordered the popular rice dish that comes in five variations - chicken, vegetarian, mixed, seafood and negra (black). Following the lead of an adjacent table, we opt for the seafood paella which the staff are proud to inform us is “the best in Dubai.” Adorned with large prawns 82

fact magazine

and mussels, the preparation process is almost ritualistic with the large paella dish brought to the table where it is ‘scratched’ prior to serving. This elaborate process enables the caramelised rice found at the bottom of the pan to come to the forefront of what transpires to be a spectacular and flavoursome dish. We may have overindulged in the savoury courses but this doesn’t stop us ordering a bag of churros to round out the meal. In our experience, good quality churros are difficult to come by and we’re often disappointed by an overly greasy and soggy dough. The churros at El Sur are made to order, meaning they arrive to the table piping hot and accompanied by lashings of chocolate sauce. With a crisp exterior and a soft interior the Spanish fiesta flair of this dessert is certainly present. With so few Spanish dining options in the city and the region, El Sur specialises in a cuisine that is so often overlooked. With a wonderful terrace, a pleasant atmosphere and a collection of rustic and memorable dishes, El Sur should be on your list next time you’re in need of tantalising tapas! ✤

ARABIC APPEAL The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Dubai – Jumeriah Beach is situated in a fantastic location at the far end of The Walk at JBR and is home to a number of recognisable F&B concepts which include the outsourced Ramusake, Copper Dog and The Maine. Yet it’s Al Maeda, the Hilton-operated Arabic restaurant that catches our attention on repeat visits to the beachfront five-star property. FACT’s David Tapley dines out… fact magazine

he entrance to Al Maeda, though a little tricky to find, is well worth the effort and despite a rather strange design which basically entails entering through the hotel’s car park, the age-old motto of “never judge a book by its cover” immediately springs to mind. Following a trail laid out by twinkling Arabic lanterns housed in glass jars along the floor, we’re led to the warm and welcoming restaurant. Passing the hostess stand Al Maeda opens up to reveal its true aesthetic. A light and airy space that feels homely and familiar which is only heightened by the demeanor of the staff which epitomise the ethos of Arabian hospitality. The team are attentive and friendly, providing us with a short tour of the restaurant with its open kitchen, bread ovens and large family style dining table. Tastefully decorated with Arabian details and a treasure trove of trinkets, Al Maeda evokes the feeling of an ancient souk through a variety of sensory traits - the Arabic music, aromatic smells escaping from the kitchen and the colourful lanterns and Arabic coffee pots that dot the dining room and outside terrace. The terrace is the restaurant’s best feature, looks out through palm fronds to Bluewaters Dubai and the Ain Dubai, the soonto-open largest Ferris wheel in the world! The terrace feels more like a family dining room with its soft furnishings and floors strewn with woven rugs, making for a preferred option for seating, hubbly bubbly or sundowners. Al Maeda’s menu features many Lebanese favourites alongside some regional specialties, but with so many ‘Arabic’ restaurants vying for diners’ attention, we are intrigued as to what sets Al Maeda apart. The menu offers little in the way of surprises, yet this is a good thing as the culinary team have taken traditional specialities and boosted them via a modern twist. It’s a bold move for such a legacy cuisine where recipes are passed down generation to generation but for Al Maeda it works well and there are very few restaurants in Dubai taking this stance. We begin with a basket of freshly baked Arabic bread and a selection of hot and cold mezze, encompassing everything from hummus and fried calamari through to a delightful watermelon and feta salad. The earthy beetroot moutabel utilises the punch of citrus which really impresses, as do the vine leaves stuffed with vegetables, rice and pomegranate. A simple fattoush, the staple salad of any Lebanese table is classically prepared with diced tomato, cucumber, fresh herbs, olive oil and toasted bread, with just the right amount of vinegar and pomegranate vinaigrette to add flavour to the base ingredients. Following the pattern of the mezze, our mains arrive in quick succession, seemingly in a bid to get all of the dishes onto the table at the same time. Although we completely understand the reasoning behind this, a slightly slower pace to the food delivery would be appreciated. A mixed grill is always our go-to choice when it comes to Middle Eastern cuisine and Al Maeda offer a vast selection which includes grilled prawns, lamb chops, fish taouk, succulent cubes of grilled chicken and

fact magazine

a lamb kofta that are all rather tender, juicy and nicely spiced. Al Maeda’s portions are overly generous – ideal for sharing. Alas, we are too full for dessert (next time for sure). The restaurant really works to promote the family-style dining concept. With a homely feel and a focus on quality and flavour, Al Maeda stands out as a special entity in a city bursting with options for Arabic cuisine. If you’ve not yet visited, we suggest you add it to your list. ✤

Culinary Genius On his latest visit to the city, celebrity chef David Myers cooked up a storm at Taste of Dubai. FACT caught up with the self-proclaimed “Gypsy Chef” to learn more about his famed restaurants, Bleu Blanc, BASTA! and Poppy, all located at the 5-star Renaissance Downtown Hotel Dubai… As a world-renowned chef, how important is it for you to be involved in food festivals like Taste of Dubai? Thanks for saying that by the way – very nice compliment (laughs). I love to be a part of these local events that happen where we’re able to get out and mingle with our guests and would-be guests. It’s almost like being on a tour and trying to publicise what you’re doing, who you are and talk about it – believe me, there is nothing I love more than talking about what we do. I’m still passionate about our restaurants and a huge believer in our concepts and our team so to be able to get out and talk to people that are in love with food, in a place like Dubai, that’s pretty cool. We love the fresh “farm to table” concept at Bleu Blanc – can you share with us your inspiration behind this venue and concept – and has it lived up to your expectations? First of all, I couldn’t be happier with Bleu Blanc. What we’ve done, not only from a design standpoint, but also the cuisine and service, and a work standpoint – has really met our expectations, even gone beyond. It was inspired by my home in the South of France that was passed down from the family generations and it’s a place where I bring all my friends over and I cook dinners. A lot of the old vintage items are still there which were passed down through the family, silverware and candelabras, chandeliers and even the old part where we do the live-fire cooking – all that’s still there. But then there are some modern touches, so that’s what this whole restaurant has been inspired after. And that’s a story by the way – I don’t have a home in the South of France – but that’s what I envisioned for Bleu Blanc. What can diners expect to taste and enjoy when dining at one of your venues – what are some of the signature dishes you serve? What they can expect to find is something that is really authentic to the region but done in a bit of a modern way with the best ingredients that you could possibly get. Whether it’s 88

fact magazine

our pizza in BASTA! which is inspired by Naples, or a pasta inspired from Rome – my favourite place – it’s truly a Roman pasta. These are the things that are really important for us when we’re creating dishes. Bleu Blanc is all about Southern French cooking over a grill, so a signature dish at Bleu Blanc would be the Grilled King Crab Leg with butter, or any of our steaks that are cooked over the different woods, which is absolutely beautiful or the Lobster Risotto. What’s the greatest honour or compliment you’ve received as a chef? Oh wow. Well, I’ve been fortunate enough to get a lot of awards, which is always an honour that our team and the restaurants are doing something right. From Michelin to James Beard and even here in town with various magazines, those are all really great things to achieve. But, really what it comes down to is when we see guests come in, they’re happy, and then they come back. There’s nothing that quite beats that. All the accolades are important and it’s what we’ve worked towards, and it helps us measure ourselves. But, at the end of the day, we better make our guests who come through, happy. You’re a busy man – running restaurants around the world – do you still enjoy the grind? Yes! I’m thankful that I do still enjoy the grind. I do love getting on a plane and flying to Singapore, flying to Dubai, flying to Tokyo, flying to L.A, and checking in at the

restaurants, seeing the guests – that’s actually the highlight of my day. And I do enjoy the other aspects of the business and the development – I thrive on creating. So, when we get a new deal, or we’re pioneering something for a new market, you come alive on that – it’s great. To come back to existing restaurants and see the guests, that’s the happy moment, the reward for all the work that we’re doing. What matters more – taste or presentation? I think they both go hand in hand, and why compromise more on one for the other? Have great presentation with something that tastes great too. I find that when you buy better and better ingredients, the less you have to do to them to make them look great. Do you have any quick advice for young budding chefs? Persevere number one, Read everything you can. And don’t try to be the greatest chef in one day. Enjoy what you’re doing – love it. You don’t have to start a business and the next day think that you’re the number one chef in the world. It’s about enjoying your craft, enjoying you cooking, having that passion of seeing the dish you created enjoyed by the guest. That’s what it’s all about and don’t forget that. All the rest will follow, you just focus on the basics and loving what you do. ✤

FACE OFF It’s not every day that you get to experience a facial that some of the world’s top celebrities can vouch for. Thanks to Willow Stream Spa’s partnership with leading London-based rejuvenation and antiageing aesthetic treatment pioneer, Dr. Rita Rakus, FACT’s Shabana Adam went to try the Red Carpet Facial and Deesse Pro LED mask at Fairmont the Palm’s homely sanctuary…

hen it comes to spa visits, facials are usually the riskiest. After all, it’s your skin that comes into play and, often, products and therapies can be unpredictable if you’ve never tried them before. It’s safe to say that I was feeling a little apprehensive about trying the Red Carpet Facial and Deesse Pro LED mask at Willow Stream Spa. The idea of putting on a mask that was lit up to tackle skin concerns, seemed a little intense at first, that was until I was welcomed by a lovely team of warm and reassuring staff, who provided welcome drinks and snacks in abundance as well as a ton of advice and information about the treatment. Here goes: the Red Carpet Facial and Deesse Pro LED mask are both genius therapies conjured up by skin-expert Dr Rita Rakus. The Londonbased rejuvenation and anti-ageing aesthetic treatment innovator is an award-winning doctor with her own high-profile Knightsbridge practice. Dr. Rakus, otherwise known as the ‘Doctor to the Stars’ has launched a series of facial treatments, the latest being the Deesse Pro LED mask. The new exclusive treatment is the sixth therapy to be added to Willow Stream Spa’s collection by Dr Rakus, in addition to the BTL X-wave, BTL Exilis, VISIA skin analysis, HydraFacial and Perk Lip and Eye Treatments. One thing that gets me excited is the fact that this treatment is a favourite of many international celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Madonna, Chrissy Teigen and Kate Hudson – if it’s good enough for the Hollywood squad, it has to work miracles on my lackluster complexion, right? Once I’ve slipped into a comfy robe and filled up on a healthy muffin and green tea, my therapist guides me to a beautiful treatment room where I instantly spot the mask in the corner. It reminds me of something out of the Blue Man Group shows, and looks like it means serious business. After a gentle foot scrub, I’m laying comfortably on the spa bed, ready to get glowing. My therapist informs me that the particular treatment I’ll be experiencing is dubbed the Red Carpet Facial – the go-to prep step in every A-listers’ regime for award’s night. Bring it on. This ultimate facial procedure incorporates all the benefits of the popular HydraFacial system which has become a big deal on its own. The unique Vortex-Fusion serum delivery system is what sets the HydraFacial MD apart from other procedures. The multi-step treatment cleanses, evenly exfoliates and extracts to remove impurities and dead skin cells while at the same time replenishing vital nutrients including antioxidants, peptides 94

and hyaluronic acid. Thanks to the device’s superior delivery system, these performing ingredients are able to more effectively help mitigate environmental damage, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and plump and firm skin for long-term results that you can see and feel instantly. The added bonus of “Red Carpet” is the addition of the award-winning Exilis radio-frequency treatment which provides a sublime lifting and tightening function to the neck and face. And it’s before the final application of the award-winning Booster Serum and Booster Cream from Dr. LEVY Switzerland, that I get to experience the Deesse Pro LED mask. The light is set to blue, which my therapist advises is great for targeting pigmentation, dullness and signs of ageing. The mask has holes for the eyes and nose, so anyone who suffers from claustrophobia needn’t worry – plenty of breathing space. The mask provides a safe, pain-free way to achieve naturally vibrant and clearer skin. The device uses Low Light Therapy (LLT) by way of medical-grade, light emitting diodes (LED’s) to expose the skin to clinically proven wavelengths of light, delivered at safe, therapeutic doses. To be very honest, I could have easily napped for the 30 minutes that the mask was on – but, of course, selfie time! My therapist carries out a thorough massage of the arms, hands and décolletage – which helps to forget that this is actually a facial – it’s great for further relaxation. After the final touches, I lift myself up and 96

Usain Bolt my way over to the nearest full-length, close-up mirror. I would hate to exaggerate, but WOW. My skin is, first and foremost, glowing. But, the best surprise is in the texture and how plump my usually sunken cheeks feel. So, this is why celebs look airbrush-perfect at special events. Got it. Lounging in the relaxation area with more tea and a plate of cashews, I smile like an excited schoolgirl every time a member of staff walks by and compliments the results of the treatment. If there’s one thing you’re guaranteed to get from Dr Rakus’ mastermind work it’s that you’ll definitely feel and “Be Your Best” (the resort’s health and wellness brand promise) but also, for a short time, why not experience how the other half really lives?! ✤

Tell us three things that set the Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City apart from its competitors... Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City is the biggest Hilton hotel in the Middle East – with 1004 rooms and suites and impressive meeting facilities. One of the most impressive features is Al Joud ballroom that can host big conferences and even weddings, and La Perle offers the unique opportunity to be transformed to a conference space as well. In contrast to our great function spaces, we also offer amazing leisure facilities, so our guests can find balance between business and pleasure. And last but by no means the least, Hilton being part of the Al Habtoor City complex offers guests the advantage to dine in 23 outlets, enjoy three different pool decks, take

Bay. It’s one of my favourites to enjoy a good Indian dinner.

What are your favourite cultural hotspots in Dubai and why? Personally, I like to keep a balance between cultural entertainment and relaxation. I enjoy evenings at the Opera just as much as beach days, to relax from the busy hotel environment. As I started my career in F&B, I’m naturally curious to try out new restaurants and dining options. Whenever I have to show guests around, I take them to the region’s “must-sees” like Burj Kahlifa and even Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, but also make sure they get the chance to explore the old and authentic side of Dubai, by taking them to the “simpler” restaurants like Saarangaa Bhojan Shala in Business

Share with us some of your professional goals for the rest of 2019. With Ramadan just around the corner, we’re just preparing all of our exciting offerings. I personally love Ramadan – it’s a very special time of the year and I enjoy how a shared Iftar brings friends and family closer together. At Hilton, we’ll offer a great Iftar buffet for the whole family, with a big play area to also keep the kids entertained. For the rest of 2019, we want to build up on our successful group business from the first quarter. We were able to secure big groups like Government Summit or Special Olympics and received amazing feedback from them – so we are very motivated to keep the good work up to deliver the best service and hospitality possible.
