LANDMARK RACING SEASON AHEAD

Royal Champion, winner of the 2025 Bahrain International Trophy, with trainer Karl Burke, wife Elaine and jockey James Doyle.

Bahrain’s 2026-27 racing season will celebrate 50 years of Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club with the Kingdom’s first Group 1 race and an expanded international programme.

B

ahrain is set for a landmark 2026-27 racing season, celebrating the 50-year anniversary of Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club (REHC) while staging its first Group 1 race and introducing increased opportunities for international runners. Ever since its establishment in 2019, the Bahrain International Trophy has been the country’s showpiece event. Following its recent upgrade to Group 1, the 2026 running will become the first race of its status to be held in the Kingdom. Taking place on November 13 at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club, the 10-furlong (2,000m) race will carry an increased prize fund of USD1.5 million. In a further boost to the event, a new race has been added to the Bahrain International Trophy raceday. The Gulf of Bahrain Cup is an open handicap worth USD400,000, run over 14 furlongs (2,800m), and aims to attract talented staying horses from around the world. Also among the initiatives introduced for the upcoming season is an expansion of the popular Bahrain Turf Series to include a dedicated mile division, operating alongside the existing middle-distance and sprint programmes. Running from October to April and comprising 30 fixtures, the 2026-27 season also marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the REHC, from which the Bahrain Turf Club itself was born. “It is wonderful that we will celebrate 50 years of the club in the very same season that Bahrain stages its first international Group 12

1 race,” said Yusuf Buheji, CEO of the Bahrain Turf Club. “The horse and horseracing are deeply embedded in our heritage. They are also integral to our vision for the future, a vision that is built around international collaboration, long-term development and an ambition to elevate Bahrain’s status on the global racing stage. “The rise of the Bahrain International Trophy has undoubtedly had a positive impact on the overall quality of racing in the Kingdom. This has enabled us to expand our international race programme, offering a broader range of opportunities within not only the Bahrain Turf Series but other races too.” Leading Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien, who saddled Galen to be runner-up to Royal Champion in the 2025 Bahrain International Trophy, also endorsed the changes and said: “It is fantastic that the Bahrain International Trophy has been upgraded to Group 1 status and the addition of the Gulf of Bahrain Cup to the same card is really exciting too.” For the 2026-27 season, the Bahrain Turf Series will increase to 14 races, concluding at The King’s Cup Festival in March 2027 with three USD100,000 handicaps. The expanded programme adds another chapter to Bahrain’s growing international racing story. ✤

NEW EXHIBIT REFLECTS ON BECOMING Al Riwaq Art Space’s latest exhibition by Dr Mayasa Al Sowaidi explores the evolving nature of identity through fragments of an imagined journal.

Al Riwaq’s ongoing solo exhibition by Dr Mayasa Al Sowaidi, A Journal of Becoming, is on view until November 23. Curated by Gaida Almogren, the exhibit unfolds through the intimate metaphor of a journal, considering the ways identity develops over time. At the centre of the display is the idea of the journal as a private space where the self gradually becomes visible. Page after page, it records an inner movement, allowing thoughts and experiences to take form through reflection. Writing becomes a way of encountering oneself, revealing dimensions of identity that may remain hidden within the pace of everyday life. The exhibition presents pages torn from different parts of this imagined journal. Each work exists as a fragment of an intimate interior landscape, carrying the trace of a particular moment in the ongoing formation of the self. Removed from their original sequence, the pages create a new encounter with time, memory and identity. The gaps between them become meaningful, inviting the viewer to imagine what remains unwritten. Dr Al Sowaidi’s works approach becoming as a philosophical condition of continual revelation. The self is never entirely known; it unfolds through experience, reflection and remembrance. A Journal of Becoming offers a space for this unfolding, where fragments gather into a meditation on identity and the passage of time. It invites viewers to turn inwards, encountering each work as a page through which another part of the self might emerge. ✤

ART IN MOTION Applications are now open for the 53rd Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, exploring how art, ideas and cultural identities move, evolve and take on new meaning. The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) has opened applications for the 53rd Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Artists wishing to participate have until November 15 to submit their applications. This year’s edition takes its cue from the theme In Circulation, examining the ways in which objects, images, ideas, aesthetics and cultural identities move across geographical, digital and economic contexts. At its heart is a question of transformation: what happens to creative forms when they leave one environment and enter another? Since launching in 1972, the annual exhibition has established itself as a platform for contemporary artistic practices in Bahrain, bringing together different artistic styles, movements and perspectives. For its 53rd edition, Al Riwaq Art Space will serve as curator through its community partnership with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, helping to develop the artistic vision around this year’s theme. The concept of circulation extends beyond physical movement. It considers the translation, reproduction, 22

fact magazine

exchange and reinterpretation of cultural and creative forms as they travel beyond their original contexts. While this movement can create new encounters, encourage collaboration and inspire collective production, it can also flatten complexity, obscure origins and turn cultural differences into marketable identities. Participating artists are invited to explore these ideas through their own practices, considering how artworks, ideas and cultural expressions can shift as they move between different contexts and narratives. The exhibition also aims to encourage experimentation with different media while supporting the continued development of Bahrain’s local art scene. The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities has invited artists interested in participating to review the submission requirements and procedures and submit their completed applications by the deadline through the BACA website. ✤

The redesigned layout will provide more space for a wide range of designs and collections, from traditional gold jewellery to contemporary designs and premium international brands. For watch enthusiasts, the exhibition also presents a curated selection of timepieces, from designer and high-end masterpieces to vintage, pre-owned and limited editions. New Names on the International Stage Hall 3 will become an extension of Halls 5 and 6, accommodating premium international brands and new participants. For those looking to care for existing pieces, the Jewellery Arabia Atelier will return to Hall 7 following strong demand at previous editions, with a second location opening in Hall 9. It will offer expert jewellery resizing, repair and alteration services. Two pathways will connect Halls 5 and 6 with Halls 7, 8, 9 and 10, helping visitors navigate the larger exhibition more easily and move between its different sections. More Than a Jewellery Shopping Trip Alongside the broader offering, Jewellery Arabia 2026 will also feature an enhanced selection of hospitality and relaxation facilities. The newly refreshed Jewellery Arabia Plaza in Hall 7 will provide a place to take a break, while restaurants and cafés including Ladurée, Joe & The Juice, Sumosan and TOO Bistro will offer options throughout the event. A dedicated American Express Members Lounge will be available, as well as four BBK and CrediMax hospitality

lounges located across the exhibition, in addition to a range of activities and services for visitors. These additions form part of the organisers’ efforts to make visits more comfortable and convenient, with facilities that extend the experience beyond shopping. The new layout reflects the exhibition’s continued growth and its commitment to enhancing the visitor experience with every edition. Scent Arabia Running alongside Jewellery Arabia, Scent Arabia will offer a beauty experience for the first time this year, where visitors will have access to cosmetics, skincare, haircare and bodycare brands, along with fragrance, oud, bakhoor and home scents. Plan Your Visit Jewellery Arabia 2026 will run in parallel with Scent Arabia and Cityscape Bahrain. Free registration provides visitors with a single badge granting access to all three events, making it easy to explore the wider programme during the five-day event. ROAST MATTERS

Ever wondered why one coffee tastes bright and fruity while another is rich and smoky? The roast plays a big part. From light and delicate to dark and bold, here’s a quick guide to how roasting transforms green coffee beans before they make it into your cup. bittersweet chocolate, smoky and roasted flavours. The beans are very dark and may have a noticeable sheen of oil on the surface.

FROM GREEN BEAN TO COFFEE BEAN So, how does a green coffee bean become the fragrant, brown bean we know and love? It all starts with heat. Coffee can be roasted using several methods, including drum roasting, where beans tumble inside a heated rotating drum, or hot-air roasting, which uses heated air to keep the beans moving. The roasting process itself happens in stages. Step 1: First comes drying, when the beans lose their moisture as they heat up. They gradually turn from green to yellow and then light brown, giving off a grassy or hay-like aroma.

Step 2: Then comes the exciting bit – the Maillard reaction. As the beans continue to heat, sugars and amino acids react, creating many of the flavours and aromas that make coffee taste, well, like coffee. The beans become increasingly brown as this stage progresses.

TYPES OF COFFEE ROASTS Light Roast Lightly roasted beans are heated for less time, which means they retain more of the characteristics of the coffee’s origin. Generally lighter in colour with very little oil on the surface, expect brighter flavours, more acidity and often fruity or floral notes.

Step 3: Eventually, they reach the first crack, a series of audible pops as pressure builds up inside the beans. If you've made popcorn on the hob, you'll recognise the sound. Roasters can stop here for lighter coffees or keep going for darker profiles. Step 4: Finally, the beans are quickly cooled to stop the roasting process and lock in their finished flavour.

Medium-Dark Roast Take things a little further and you get medium-dark beans, which tend to have a fuller body and less acidity than you’d find in a lighter roast. The flavours also become richer, with notes of chocolate, spice and toasted nuts often coming through. A lot of espresso is roasted to about this point. Dark Roast Dark roasting produces heavy, intense coffee in which the roast itself often overpowers the bean's original characteristics. Think 36

Medium Roast As the name suggests, medium roasts sit somewhere in the middle. The beans develop more body and sweetness during roasting, while still keeping some of their original character. A popular all-rounder, you’ll often find notes of caramel, nuts, chocolate and fruit.

WHAT’S BREWING?

Image - Skyler Ewing, Pexels

Image - Quang Nguyen Vinh, Pexels

There’s more than one way to make a great cup of coffee, and the method can make all the difference. From a punchy espresso to a slow-steeped cold brew, here’s a look at how your favourite coffee makes its way into your cup.

BREWING METHODS Making coffee might seem simple enough, but there’s a little more to it than just adding hot water and hoping for the best. The brewing method affects everything, so finding your favourite is half the fun! Espresso: Made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure, producing a small, concentrated shot that forms the base of many café favourites. Pour-Over: Hot water is poured by hand over ground coffee held in a paper or reusable filter. The water passes through slowly, and the resulting cup is often clean and light in texture. French Press: Steeps coarsely ground coffee in hot water before a plunger separates the grounds. This produces a fuller-bodied cup with more of the coffee's natural oils. Moka Pots: Uses steam pressure on the stovetop to produce a strong, concentrated coffee. Often compared to espresso, although the two are made differently. Drip Coffee: Manual pour-over setups and electric filter machines let hot water pass through ground coffee and a filter, producing a clean, balanced brew. They’re also handy when making several cups.

KNOW YOUR COFFEE Café menus can sometimes read like another language, especially when all you’re after is a decent cup. Here’s a quick guide to ordering with confidence.

FUN FACTS AND TOP TRENDS

From surprising facts about your favourite beans to the latest trends, there’s always something new to learn about coffee. We’ve rounded up a few fun titbits and fresh ideas worth knowing before your next caffeine run. Ready-to-drink Coffee: Canned and bottled coffees are made for days when there’s little time to spare. Grab one on the way to work or keep it chilled for an afternoon pick-me-up. Mushroom Coffee: Made by combining coffee with mushroom extracts such as lion’s mane or reishi, these blends appeal to wellness-minded drinkers. Many of their advertised health benefits, however, still need stronger scientific evidence.

Iced Coffee: Cold brew, nitro coffee and espresso poured over ice all have their devotees. Add cold foam, flavoured syrup or a splash of milk to make it your own. With Bahrain’s warm weather, the appeal is hardly surprising. Coffee Events: And as Bahrain’s coffee scene continues to grow, so does the number of events celebrating it. Last month, BLACK22 hosted the Bahrain AeroPress Championship, bringing local brewers together to put their skills to the test. Next up is the Bahrain Coffee Festival in December, featuring live brewing demonstrations, tastings, activities and workshops for anyone keen to learn about all things coffee.

Think you know your coffee? There’s more to your daily cup than a caffeine fix! Here are a few little-known facts to share the next time you’re catching up over a brew. ● Coffee plants can live for decades. Given the right conditions, a coffee plant can survive for 50 to 100 years, although its most productive period comes much earlier. ● Coffee beans once had monetary value. In parts of Ethiopia, coffee was traded as a valuable commodity and used in everyday transactions. ● The world’s biggest cup was enormous. In 2019, a team in Colombia created a giant cup holding more than 22,000 litres of coffee, earning a Guinness World Records title. That’s a lot of refills! ● Decaf isn’t entirely caffeine-free. The process removes most of the caffeine, but small amounts remain. Something to bear in mind if you’re ordering a cup late in the evening. ● Used coffee grounds have a second life. Add them to your

compost to contribute organic matter to the soil or put them to work absorbing unwanted odours around the home.

TRENDS BREWING NOW Coffee culture keeps finding new ways to surprise us, and Bahrain’s café scene is keeping pace. 48

Chef of the Year

Our Event Sponsors

Introduced in 2023, the Chef of the Year award has quickly become one of the evening’s most closely watched accolades. Last year, the public vote went to Chef Brian Becher, Regional Executive Chef – Middle East, Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group, from Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. After six years at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, Brian moved to Bahrain in 2014, drawn by the opportunity to grow as a chef in a country where so many cultures are represented, offering exposure to new cuisines, techniques and ingredients.

A successful event takes a team effort, and the generous support of our partners helps make it all happen. The 2025 edition was backed by Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, Audi Centre Bahrain, BMMI Shops, Vatel Hotel & Tourism Business School, Anorris Events, Bidfood, the ENTERTAINER, Asgharali, HSP Marketing and Twigs Flowers & Chocolates. Their invaluable support helped make the evening one to remember.

The Night’s Biggest Wins The overall restaurant titles always attract plenty of attention, and the 2025 edition was no exception. Sumosan at Address Beach Resort Bahrain took home Overall Favourite Restaurant, earning the public’s support for its contemporary Japanese cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. Meanwhile, the Overall Best Restaurant went to Golestan Persian Grill at the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, a venue that is hugely popular for its amazing food and outstanding service.

What’s New for 2026 The 17th edition returns with another year of nominees, fresh names and 55 categories, including Chef of the Year. As the awards get bigger and better with each passing year, so do our nominees. To ensure we cover a wide breadth of the island’s dining scene and give venues fair representation, this year we have decided to split the popular All-Day Dining and Breakfast Experience categories into two sections: Hotels and Independent. Additionally, in view of the challenging times the region faced earlier this year, many venues did not have the opportunity to showcase their Iftar and Ghabga offerings and Ramadan Experiences to the fullest. So, in a show of solidarity, we have decided to omit these two categories from this year’s awards.

Meet The Venue & Partners The 17th Fact Dining Awards Bahrain is set to take place on November 30 at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa, the award-winning five-star property known for its world-class hospitality and dining. With its lush tropical gardens, resortstyle surroundings and impressive event spaces, The Gulf Hotel provides a fitting setting for an evening celebrating the Kingdom’s dining industry. he Mitsubishi XFORCE Premium has a name that sounds more suited to an elite military unit than a compact SUV. Fortunately, the car itself was easy to get along with. We explored the details and soon found that Mitsubishi had given some thought to the little comforts that can make a big difference when you're spending more time in traffic than your sanity would recommend.

A Sense of Adventure Mitsubishi's Silky & Solid design theme made sense as we walked around the XFORCE. Smooth surfaces met pronounced shoulders and sculpted wheel arches, while the Dynamic Shield front end and bold grille gave it a distinctive face. T-shaped LED headlights were echoed by matching rear lights, giving the XFORCE a recognisable lighting signature, with a roof spoiler adding a sporty touch. Two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels complemented its stance. At 4,390mm long and 1,810mm wide, the XFORCE kept its proportions manageable, while 222mm ground clearance reinforced its adventurous character. We liked that it appeared substantial without being oversized. The result was assertive but tidy; Mitsubishi had given it an adventurous streak without dressing it for a mountain rescue.

Designed Around Daily Life The cabin was a pleasant change of pace after the assertive exterior. Black synthetic-leather upholstery with mocha accents brought colour to the seats, while mélange fabric across the dashboard added warmth and texture. There was more to the cabin's appeal than its digital displays, and we appreciated the attention given to its materials and finishes. The height-adjustable driver's seat and adjustable steering wheel helped us find a comfortable position, with the cabin feeling thoughtfully arranged around us. Behind us, the back seats reclined through eight positions and folded 40:20:40, with a rear centre armrest and cupholders for passengers. An adjustable cargo board accommodated awkward loads, although it cannot be adjusted with the full-size spare tyre fitted. A hands-free electric tailgate made luggage access easier. Storage included a cooled centre-console box. A thoughtful addition, given what happens to a bottle of water left in the car for more than 10 minutes.

The Digital Details The Premium's 12.3-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio screen dominated the dashboard, with an eight-inch digital driver display providing essential driving data. We appreciated how clearly it separated entertainment from driving information. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto brought familiar phone functions aboard, while wireless charging and USB Type-A and Type-C ports catered for devices. Dual-zone automatic climate control let those up front select different temperatures, while rear vents kept back-seat passengers comfortable. The nanoe X system was designed to improve cabin air quality, and ambient lighting added polish after 60

dark. Separate temperature settings were welcome, especially when the driver preferred a gentle breeze and the front passenger seemed to be preparing for an Arctic expedition.

Enjoying the Journey The XFORCE's 1.5-litre four-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) delivered smooth acceleration through city traffic. Pressing the accelerator brought a steady surge of power, while the transmission kept things flowing without conventional gear changes. There was enough enthusiasm for everyday driving, although the XFORCE preferred a relaxed approach rather than pretending it belonged on a racetrack. MacPherson struts up front and a rear torsion beam helped settle the vehicle over uneven surfaces, while Active Yaw Control contributed to its composure through bends. We enjoyed the comfortable ride and predictable steering, which made changing direction feel natural and controlled, without constant steering corrections. Four modes – Normal, Wet, Gravel and Mud – added versatility, although Normal suited most of our driving. Overall, the XFORCE felt comfortable and confident, with enough character to keep the journey interesting without making passengers reach for the grab handles.

Watching Your Back The Premium's safety equipment showed sensible thinking. Six airbags were joined by Blind Spot Warning, which alerts drivers to certain vehicles approaching from behind in adjacent lanes. Rear fact magazine

Cross Traffic Alert can warn of approaching traffic when reversing, a useful feature in busy car parks, where vehicles can appear just as you're beginning to back out. Active Stability Control, traction control, Hill Start Assist and tyre-pressure monitoring added reassurance. An electric parking brake with Auto Hold was another worthwhile feature in stop-start traffic. These systems supported an attentive driver, rather than suggesting that paying attention was optional.

A Force for Everyday Life What stayed with us was the XFORCE Premium's attention to the practicalities of daily life. The exterior had enough presence to feel distinctive, but the more persuasive details were inside: flexible rear seating, useful storage, appealing materials and technology that addressed familiar needs. We appreciated how those features worked alongside the adaptable driving modes and reassuring safety equipment. It was not trying to reinvent the compact SUV. The XFORCE Premium offered comfort, versatility and personality for drivers whose days rarely follow one plan. It might have a name worthy of an action film, but its real talent was making the ordinary considerably more enjoyable. ✤

A WORKSPACE YOU WEAR XREAL’s AURA packs a full Android XR computer into lightweight glasses, bringing apps, AI and a giant virtual display into the world around you. Imagine having your apps floating in front of you, wherever you happen to be, without wearing a bulky headset. That’s the idea behind XREAL’s AURA, optical see-through glasses weighing under 95 grams and tethered to a separate computing puck that runs Android XR. The technology is split between the glasses and a small computing puck. The glasses handle the virtual display, hand tracking and Bose-tuned audio, while the puck contains the main processor and battery that power the experience. It also works as a trackpad, letting you navigate apps and control what appears in front of you without adding extra hardware to the glasses. Together, the two create a 70-degree field of view for placing virtual screens and content around you. Because the lenses are see-through, digital content can sit within your real surroundings rather than completely replacing them. Add Google Gemini and Google Play to the mix, and AURA behaves less like a pair of display glasses and more like a wearable computer. Onboard cameras also allow it to do considerably more than XREAL’s earlier display-only models. For travellers, remote workers and early adopters, the appeal is obvious: a private, hands-free workspace on a train, in a hotel room or even at a café table. The trade-off is that AURA isn’t standalone. It relies on a cable connecting the glasses to the

computing puck, meaning there’s another device to carry around. Android XR is also still a young platform, but if you want a glimpse of where everyday spatial computing is heading, in a form light enough to wear for hours, AURA makes a compelling start. ✤ GO: VISIT XREAL.COM/AURA FOR MORE INFORMATION.

HONOURING A LEGACY Entrepreneur and restaurateur Khalifa Al Zayani, Chairman of Faieq Al Zayani Company W.L.L. (FAZCO), is the creative mind leading the family business into its next chapter. He shares his vision for the future of hospitality, his approach to leadership and carrying forward his father’s legacy. 74

fact magazine

BUSINESS IN FOCUS •

You started your career in film and media, becoming one of the first Bahrainis to present a film at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. How did your journey into hospitality begin? Interestingly enough, my journey began with hospitality. My first experience at university was studying hospitality and catering. At the same time, I was DJing, initially as a hobby, but it quickly became something I was incredibly passionate about. That passion for music led me towards audio engineering and eventually into the creative arts. While studying, I stumbled upon filmmaking classes, and what started almost by accident developed into a career in film and digital media. But hospitality was always in my blood. My father was a restaurateur, amongst many other things, and I grew up with an appreciation for what it means to bring people together, to entertain and to create memorable experiences. So, in many ways, I never really left hospitality. I simply took a different route back to it. And I think those years in the creative industries gave me a very different perspective on the business. For me, hospitality is as much a creative industry as filmmaking or music. You’re creating something that people should feel, not just consume. Having worked in Dubai’s creative and marketing industries, do you miss that world, and what skills do you still carry into your current role? The creative arts weren’t simply a hobby for me; they were my career, and they remain a very important part of who I am. I believe that as you progress through life, you walk through many doors and wear many different hats. Each experience teaches you something, and the real value lies in your ability to carry those lessons and skills into whatever comes next. So, I don’t necessarily look back at my years in film, media and marketing as something I’ve left behind. I see them as part of what I do today. Whether you’re producing a film, building a brand or creating a hospitality experience, you’re ultimately trying to connect with people and make them feel something.

Refreshing Cico’s, one of Bahrain’s iconic Italian restaurants, was a significant achievement. What was your vision behind it? Cico’s has been part of Bahrain’s dining landscape since 1978, and for us, it has always represented something far greater than just a restaurant. It’s a place where generations of families have come together. There aren’t many establishments that can say that, and it’s something I take tremendous pride in. The truth is, the foundations were always there. The menu hadn’t changed, many of our staff were the same, and the identity of the restaurant remained intact. What it needed was a little love, attention and a renewed sense of purpose. We didn’t set out to reinvent Cico’s. We set out to remind ourselves, and our team, of what it stood for. We reinforced the values, the consistency and the sense of belonging that had defined the restaurant for decades. And I think our customers felt that. Legacy is another project that is close to your heart. What sets it apart in Bahrain’s luxury hospitality scene? Legacy was born out of an opportunity to bring two worlds that have defined our company for decades together under one roof: hospitality and the world of fine tobacco. I’ve always been fascinated by the culture surrounding the latter. There’s a certain sophistication to it, but what I find particularly beautiful is how relaxed and unpretentious the people within that world can be. You can find yourself in the most refined surroundings, enjoying the finest things in life, yet the atmosphere remains wonderfully casual. That’s really the philosophy behind Legacy. I wanted to create a space where luxury and comfort coexist naturally. Somewhere you can enjoy exceptional dining, a carefully curated selection of tobacco, beautiful music and impeccable surroundings, but still feel comfortable enough to let your hair down. Perched high above Bahrain, with extraordinary views across the country, Legacy brings all of those elements together. fact magazine

• BUSINESS IN FOCUS

How has Bahrain’s hospitality industry evolved in recent years, and what changes do you expect to see next? I think that’s a particularly difficult question, and I’d be very interested to meet anyone who claims they can accurately predict where the hospitality industry is heading. What I can speak about is what we’re experiencing on the ground. Recent regional conflicts and disruptions to international supply chains have made sourcing certain ingredients and products increasingly challenging. For an industry that has traditionally relied quite heavily on imported produce, that’s something we simply cannot ignore. What I believe we may begin to see is a shift in how restaurants approach their menus, with a greater emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, regional suppliers and making better use of what’s available closer to home. I think the establishments that can adapt without compromising their identity or the quality of their offering will be in a much stronger position moving forward. Could you describe your leadership style and how you inspire and motivate your team? Leadership isn’t something I believe you ever completely master. It evolves, and I think a good leader needs to be able to adapt their approach depending on the people and circumstances in front of them. My philosophy, however, has always been relatively simple: put the right people in the right positions, give them the tools they need and then allow them the freedom to do what you hired them to do. I’ve never been particularly fond of micromanagement. If you hire an artist, you don’t stand over their shoulder telling them how to paint. You give them the canvas, the brushes and the colours, and you trust them to create something extraordinary. I believe the same principle applies to business. Surround yourself with talented people, give them a clear understanding of the vision and empower them to bring their own abilities and creativity to the table. 76

fact magazine

You’re passionate about bringing unique international experiences to Bahrain. Can we look forward to any exciting new ventures or concepts in the future? Looking at the world today, with all its uncertainties, I think our immediate priority is to strengthen and fortify what we’ve already built. To make sure that everything we’re doing, we’re doing exceptionally well, and that our businesses have the foundations to continue thriving long into the future. For me, the next chapter isn’t necessarily about opening another restaurant or launching another concept. It’s about building something sustainable, something that can stand the test of time. And perhaps more importantly, it’s about preparing the path for the next generation. We’ve inherited a remarkable family business, and I see it as my responsibility to ensure that our children have the opportunities, the knowledge and the tools to carry it forward. Congratulations on FAZCO’s 50th anniversary this year. What has your journey with the family business been like, and what does the next chapter hold? Fifty years is an extraordinary milestone, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be the person entrusted with carrying our family business across that threshold. For me, it’s both an immense privilege and an enormous responsibility. It’s about honouring my father’s legacy and understanding the years of dedication, sacrifice and devotion that went into building what we have today. I’m incredibly proud to be part of my father’s story, and even more grateful to have the opportunity to continue writing it. My responsibility is to take the principles he believed in, carry them forward and hopefully leave the business in a position where the next generation can do the same. Ultimately, when I look back at my time leading this company, I hope I can say that I built something he would have been proud of. ✤

THOUGHTFUL COOKING Combining more than two decades of international experience across luxury hospitality and Michelinstarred kitchens, Executive Chef William Khala now leads the culinary vision of Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. He talks all things food, from creativity and proud career moments to his favourite go-to meal!

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

You’ve trained in some of the world’s top Michelin-starred kitchens. What did those experiences teach you? Working in Michelin-starred kitchens taught me, above all, to respect the ingredients and appreciate the importance of seasonality. Every product has its own character, and understanding how to bring out its best qualities is fundamental to great cooking. These experiences also taught me to constantly push my boundaries, challenge myself creatively and never stop learning. For me, creativity comes from a strong foundation of technique, discipline and a genuine appreciation for the ingredients we work with. Of all the awards and competitions you've won throughout your career, which are you most proud of, and why? Winning the gold medal at the regional Canadian Chaîne des Rôtisseurs competition remains one of my proudest achievements. It was my very first competition, and I remember the amount of energy, passion and effort I put into preparing for it. I wanted to challenge myself and make an impact, so receiving that recognition was incredibly rewarding. It gave me confidence early in my career and reinforced the importance of dedication and believing in what you do.

What’s your guilty-pleasure meal after a long shift, and what's always in your fridge at home? After a long day in the kitchen, I tend to keep things very simple. Give me a good selection of aged cheeses, some toasted sourdough bread and I'm happy. There's something satisfying about enjoying quality ingredients without overcomplicating them, especially after spending the day creating elaborate dishes. And one thing you'll almost always find in my fridge is Pepsi Zero! Which signature dish at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain would you choose to introduce someone to your cooking, and what makes it special? I would choose my roasted lamb, served with burnt eggplant, pomegranate mint jam, tapenade and a za'atar lamb reduction. This dish reflects my culinary identity and my appreciation for bringing traditional Middle Eastern flavours into a contemporary dining experience. The richness and tenderness of the lamb are complemented by the smoky depth of the eggplant, while the pomegranate mint jam introduces a refreshing balance of sweetness and acidity. The tapenade adds a savoury dimension and the za'atar lamb reduction brings everything together with warmth and aromatic complexity. For me, it's a dish that celebrates the region's ingredients and culinary heritage while reflecting my approach to cooking: thoughtful combinations, layered flavours and a modern interpretation of familiar traditions.✤ fact magazine

I

’m not sure if attending fewer brunches is a sign of growing up or growing old, I just know that I’ve become remarkably picky about where I spend my Fridays. But, an invitation to sample the new Bella Italia Brunch at Primavera at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain didn’t have to do much to entice me from my lair. The restaurant is a long-time favourite and Italian fare is some of my favourite food, so a win-win for me. My friend and I arrived bright and early on a Friday lunchtime and I was delighted to see the tables decked out in crisp white linens and Amalfi-style lemon décor giving a true sense of the feast to come. The brunch is not the buffet-style scramble which, I have to admit, is one of the elements that’s slightly put me off in recent times. I do enjoy a big brunch with lots of choices for drinks and eats when it’s a special occasion, such as a holiday or birthday. But when it’s a smaller affair, I love the very grown-upness of a set menu – beautiful food, delivered to the table with a smile by knowledgeable staff for whom nothing is too much trouble. It just feels somehow more special and this was definitely the case at Primavera. The menu is split into sections and we began with the Pane E Spalmabili – which basically translates to bread and spreads. Be warned, this is seriously good and overindulgence could scupper the rest of your meal, so take it slow and easy; there is much to enjoy. A basket of amazing breads, including ciabatta, focaccia, multigrain and sourdough, arrived accompanied by multiple little pots of spreads. And, oh my, both my dining companion and I were sorely tempted to just tuck in and finish the lot. Vibrant romesco boasted bright red peppery goodness with a hint of heat and earthy nutty flavour. The traditional Sicilian sweet and sour of caponata with chunky aubergines was a triumph of both taste and texture – smoky and deep, perfect with the homemade bread. My favourite was the silky lemon and dill yoghurt, almost like a tzatziki with plenty of garlic but with the citrus adding that extra kick. A dish holding chunks of Parmesan was one we returned to several times, keeping it on the table when the other Spalmabili had been cleared. Then it was time for Antipasti and we were glad we had shown at least a little restraint. Soon the table was filled with colourful plates bearing arancini, calamari, bresaola and the classic vitello tonnato. As I said, slow and steady. We definitely took our time, making sure not to miss any of these amazing flavours. For me, the baby calamari, fried in a gently crispy coating on the outside and soft and yielding within, were my favourite. The accompaniment of homemade tartar sauce and a squeeze of lime juice made for a perfectly satisfying bite that brought to mind afternoons around the table at the Italian coast. The bresaola with rocket and parmesan was rich and meaty with salty undertones, while the vitello, with its oh-so-tender veal, gave a delicious indication of joys to come in the main course. My dining companion was thoroughly impressed by the arancini: earthy saffron providing the perfect foil to the rich creamy cheesiness of the fluffy rice. A definite winner. Then it was time for the Piatto Principale (mains), which meant a selection of dishes to keep pretty much any palate happy – all served up on delightfully patterned dishes that added a dash of sunshine to the table. seasonal mushrooms was a joy the thin crust perfectly blistered, crisp at the edges and chewy in the middle, the mushrooms deeply earthy and flavourful. Al dente rigatoni boasted a rich tomatoey sauce, pungent with garlic and teeming with sweet, succulent prawns – we both mopped this up eagerly before tucking into another of my favourites of the day, the seabass fillet. Seared and served on a bed of finely diced kalamata olives, cherry tomatoes, capers, capsicum and shallots, the fish was firm yet flaky, its clean, light flavour perfectly complemented by the punchiness of the veggie mix, which added real depth and interest to the dish. Dal Carrello Delle Carni (the offering from the meat cart) meant a tableside serving with a touch of theatre as the chef sharpened his knife to carve delicately thin slices of pale pink veal from a substantial, herb-crusted striploin. The meat was honestly some of the best I’ve tasted in a long time: moist and buttery, the flavour was delicate and decadent at the same time. And, being an absolute potato snob, I must make special mention of the accompanying asparagus-potato ragout. I don’t know what the chef used to cook this little dish of wonder but the steam rising from the vegetables bore an enticing aroma and the potatoes were super flavourful alongside the crunchy asparagus – I honestly wished I had space to eat more. We finished with a selection of desserts which, being in an Italian osteria, would not have been complete without the inclusion of the classic tiramisu. Constructed at the table, rich, sweet mascarpone cream was poured over dark, coffee-soaked savoiardi and topped with a dusting of cocoa powder to cut the bitterness of the coffee. I don’t even like coffee, but I couldn’t resist! We were also treated to a selection of fresh fruits, a gorgeous Sicilian cheesecake with whipped cream and, my favourite, a dark, sumptuous Valrhona chocolate tart with pistachio brittle – I’m wishing I could go back just writing about it. We finished with tea and coffee on the terrace as the sun was starting to set, having enjoyed an afternoon that offered a true taste of Italy right here in Bahrain. From the thoughtful décor touches and amazing views over the gardens and water to the simple but superbly flavourful menu and a good selection of beverages, I can’t recommend this brunch enough. I’ll definitely be going back very soon. ✤ GO: CALL 1758 6452 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A RESERVATION. fact magazine

he Meat Co. has been a stalwart of the Adliya dining scene for more than 15 years; the place to go for a great atmosphere and superb steaks. So, I was excited to check out the changes. Safe to say, I was seriously impressed. The rooftop is now a dark, moody lounge space dubbed The Reserve, where tribal tattoo-style artwork daubs the ceilings, walls bear the hues of Kenya’s deep red-brown earth and traditional basketry art pays tribute to the company’s African roots, offsetting the grandeur of abundant black marble and leather. The middle floor boasts a statement bar area topped by an amazing hanging lamp constructed from pink ostrich feathers. It sounds opulent. It is. Above the tables, custom-made pink glass chandeliers resemble fantasy creatures, bringing a touch of whimsy to an almost masculine area of deep captain’s-style leather chairs and marble-topped tables. On the ground floor, more statement custom lighting descending from a stylised, carved wooden ceiling gives an art deco feel, echoed by the black and white tiled floor. A large open kitchen gives a glimpse of the culinary team at work – always a welcome spectacle when fire cooking is involved – and, in tribute to the steak-heavy menu, the entrance bears an impressive wall of steak knives (a survivor from the original décor) bearing the names of regular visitors. Exploring has built an appetite (not to mention a determination to bag an invitation to The Reserve which, I’m told, will be a rather select spot) and I’m happy to see the food starting to arrive in the form of the Prime Steak Tartare. Hand chopped raw prime fillet with kimchi mayo, cucumber and ponzu pearls, crispy bubu 86

arare (tiny rice pearls), caper berries and sourdough. The ponzu and bubu arare add both texture and a combination of earthy and tangy flavours, but the star of the show is most definitely the meat – mild and sweet in taste, the flesh is delicate and almost creamy in texture, a pure delight. We're also served an intriguing looking bread selection, baked together as a series of soft, colourful conjoined buns. The flavours of beetroot and chocolate, onion and garlic and dark charcoal, are perfectly picked out by the accompanying chilli butter and we enjoy the soft, almost brioche-like texture. I’m surprised by the Short Rib Croquettes since they come with a topping of manchego that makes the rissoles appear almost white, their crispy outers hidden beneath the savoury shards. They sit in a super creamy sauce that plays well with the accompanying sweet, strong red onions, and the inclusion of chilli oil gives a mild heat rather than a distinct kick, perfectly complementing the umami depth of the meat. As a break from the meaty heaviness, we add Watermelon, Kale & Rocket salad, which arrives at the table looking as pretty as a picture with a mix of bright colours inviting us to tuck in. Baby kale, rocket leaves, watermelon and toasted corn are accompanied by a sweet berry dressing with manchego cheese, walnuts, pomegranate and bubu arare, bringing a whole range of textures and flavours to the mix. It’s a hearty bowl that’s also light enough for a quick lunch and a welcome reset from the first round of meaty goodness. For mains, the kitchen is determined to showcase the steak side of the menu and we start with beef short ribs that have been braised for three hours until the flesh is juicy and fall-apart tender, then finished at the table with a flaming torch to set the glaze of

a delicious homemade BBQ sauce. The slightly sticky topping is not overly sweet, and the meat is delightfully complemented by daubs of saffron cauliflower purée. This is a new combination for me and I love the silky lightness of the vegetable base combined with the aromatic warmth of the spice. Then comes the main event – 1.2kg of Prime Tomahawk; a huge piece of meat that I usually avoid as kitchens often struggle to achieve a uniform cooking temperature throughout, and I’ve previously battled the extremes of either overdone edges or bleeding centre. However, at The Meat Co., this high-quality cut is grilled then roasted in the oven to achieve the perfect level of tenderness and comes piping hot, very lightly chewy and deeply flavourful. I must also mention the seasoning – I am a salt demon, a habit that draws criticism from both my doctor and my chef friends but, on this occasion, I don’t even need the lightest sprinkling. The seasoning is spot on, beautifully complementing the juicy, meaty flavours that burst on the tongue. With the savoury options completed, it is time to finish on a sweet note and even though we are more than full, there is no way to resist the delights that arrive at the table. The Meat Co.’s profiteroles are a masterclass in elegance – delicate puffed choux pastry piped with vanilla mascarpone cream and roasted hazelnuts, topped with homemade hazelnut praline and gold leaf. It all sounds very fancy but, in reality, they’re little balls of light, fluffy deliciousness that’re very hard to resist. My favourite though is the chocolate fondant cake – I always get a great kick out of watching fully-formed sponge turn to rich, gooey lava under my spoon. A drizzle of pistachio praline adds the finishing touch. Impossibly rich chocolate, earthy nutty sauce

and homemade ice cream with a crunchy, chocolatey tuile. Who could ask for more? On this visit, I concentrate on just a few of the beef dishes but the menu also offers a good range of other options, from chicken and lamb to gourmet burgers and even fish and chips – I plan on working my way through them all in the future. From the gorgeous new surroundings to the friendly, welcoming serving crew, I think I’ve found a new (old) favourite. See you there? ✤

hey say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. As much as I like the idea, it needs to be something special for me to indulge in this repast. So, when an opportunity arose to try Mamushka’s breakfast menu (available all day until 6pm), I didn’t need to be asked twice. Mamushka offers a great blend of modern dishes alongside traditional family recipes handed down through generations. A quick browse of the menu revealed plenty to tempt me, from breakfast bowls to sandwiches, with sourdough taking pride of place amongst most options. It's the kind of food that’s right up my street. With a promise of using the freshest ingredients in its in-house bakery, it was an easy choice for my breakfast companion and me to start with the sourdough section of the menu. We began with the Shakshuka Feta Sourdough, a comforting combination of spiced tomato and bell pepper blend topped with poached egg, crumbled feta and mozzarella. The tomato base had a gentle warmth from the spices, while the cheeses added a creamy, salty finish. Served on white sourdough, it was a delicious twist on a breakfast classic. The Feta Labneh Sourdough was a lovely balance of contrasting flavours, with labneh and feta topped with baby rocket, pomegranate, cherry tomatoes and molasses. All the elements worked in absolute harmony, from the tangy feta and creamy labneh to the sticky sweetness of the molasses. The cherry tomatoes and peppery rocket added freshness to the dish, while the pomegranate brought little bursts of fruitiness. For something with a sweeter edge, the Turkey Fig Jam Sourdough paired smoked turkey with fig jam, cream cheese and rocket leaves on white sourdough. The smokiness of the turkey offered the perfect savoury contrast to the jam’s sweetness, while the cream cheese kept everything smooth and mellow. No breakfast is complete without a flaky croissant, and a sourdough version was one we just had to try. One of the star dishes of the day, the Avocado Egg Croissant was filled with avocado, cream cheese, black sesame seeds, chilli oil and poached eggs. I never thought I’d enjoy a spicy kick in my croissant, but the combination of tangy, spicy and sweet flavours worked a treat and made this a little different from the usual breakfast plates. After all those delicious bites, we decided to give eggs a rest and cleanse our palates with a delightful Acai Bowl. Sweet, slightly tart blended acai berries were topped with creamy, lightly salted peanut butter, crunchy granola and fresh strawberries and blueberries. The berries added a fruity zing, while the peanut butter brought a nutty richness. It was a refreshing change for the taste buds before we moved on to the sandwiches. While enjoying this tasty break, it was easy to see why this little corner of Marassi was so popular. The café has a warm, relaxed atmosphere, with a modern, minimalist design that feels welcoming from the moment you walk in. The open interiors pair clean, neutral tones of beige with deep blue accents and subtle nods to the brand’s name appear throughout. Mamushka is an affectionate Russian term for 'mother', and the familiar nesting-doll motif features in the decorative details, right down to the cutlery holders. Floralpatterned chairs add charm to the intimate seating area. The glass counter displaying whole cakes and viennoiseries is an instant draw, with freshly baked breads and condiments available to 90

purchase. Along the wall, warmly lit arched alcoves frame shelves of speciality coffees and other products, with a central Mamushka doll and rocking horses completing the display. It's a lovely spot to settle into after a morning of shopping at Marassi Galleria. Back to the food and the Grilled Halloumi Pesto Sandwich was another hit. A classic combination, the grilled halloumi was perfectly golden-brown, with the salty cheese balancing beautifully against the herbaceous pesto. The seven-cereal sourdough was surprisingly light, and you could taste the freshness of the herbs and the creamy nuttiness of the pine nuts in every bite. A touch of honey added sweetness, while peppery rocket lifted the flavours further. The Club Sandwich was a heartier option, layered with grilled chicken, boiled egg, lettuce, chipotle sauce, cheddar cheese, smoked turkey and tomato on seven-cereal sourdough. The smoky turkey and cheddar provided savoury depth, while the chipotle sauce gave it a gentle kick. A satisfying take on a familiar classic. To accompany our meal, we opted for fresh orange juice and Hibiscus Pomegranate Lemonade. Both were fresh and delicious and complemented the breakfast dishes perfectly. Of course, a visit to a café and bakery would hardly be complete without cake, and we couldn’t resist sampling three of Mamushka’s tempting creations. First up was the unapologetically indulgent Mamushka Cake, with layers of rich chocolate and creamy caramel, finished with chocolate ganache and a generous crunch of roasted hazelnuts. A chocolate lover’s dream! The Medovik Russian Honey Cake offered something a little different, with thin honey-infused sponge layers, smooth honey

Chantilly cream and a coating of fine honey crumbs. Delicate and softly sweet, it was a lovely change from the richness of the chocolate cake. My favourite, however, was the Carrot Cheesecake, which I hadn’t tried before. Combining moist, spiced carrot cake with creamy cheesecake, it was a comforting twist on two favourites. Naturally, we ordered a couple of Americanos to go with our dessert, and these went down a treat! Mamushka makes for a cosy stop to refuel after a morning of shopping, whether over a tasty sourdough sandwich or a slice of cake and coffee. We went for breakfast but left with plenty of reasons to return. I think I’ve found my new favourite foodie stop at Marassi Galleria. ✤

hen Constance Hotels & Resorts invited us to discover three of its Mauritian properties, we didn't need much convincing. Five nights, three luxury hotels and a tropical island waiting to be explored? We've certainly faced more difficult assignments. Our journey would take us from the south-east coast to the east and then north-east, revealing different sides of Mauritius along the way.

Constance Le Chaland Constance Belle Mare Plage

The first two nights were at Constance Le Chaland, close to the airport yet surrounded by greenery and a stretch of pale sand. Le Chaland made a lovely first impression, with its natural surroundings providing much of the appeal. Buildings sat among tropical planting, paths wound through the grounds and the overall impression was wonderfully unhurried. It was an appealing introduction to Mauritius, where escape appeared to require little effort. The accommodation complemented the resort's peaceful surroundings, with garden-facing rooms, ocean-view retreats and spacious suites offering different ways to enjoy the setting. For those travelling with family or friends, the private-pool villas introduced an additional level of space and seclusion. Balconies and terraces provided an inviting link to the outdoors, while the rooms combined contemporary conveniences with local touches. The larger suites added separate living areas; the villas offered private pools and plenty of room to spread out. Even an overpacker would have struggled to fill the space. It wasn't long before the resort's culinary offerings had our full attention. Horizon, our first evening's destination, brought together international favourites and local influences, with breakfast buffets and live cooking stations adding plenty of choice the following morning. Lunch at Aqua fitted comfortably into the relaxed daytime rhythm, while our hosted dinner at Flame & Tide gave the ocean a starring role. Its emphasis on grilled seafood, meats and local produce suited the seaside surroundings, with open cooking and wide views providing an atmospheric backdrop. There was much to discover beyond the dining tables. Our programme included singing bowl meditation by the Aqua pool, an introduction to archery and time on the water for snorkelling and a glass-bottom boat excursion. A walk towards Royal Palm Forest offered another perspective on the landscape. It was a delightful introduction to the island's natural beauty, and a reminder that some of the best holiday memories are made away from the sun loungers. Constance Spa offered its own invitation to slow down, with treatment rooms and outdoor massage pavilions among the facilities. Yoga and other well-being activities complemented the setting. We were beginning to suspect that our ambitious plans for productivity would not survive the week.

Constance Belle Mare Plage

Constance Belle Mare Plage

A Change of Pace at Belle Mare Plage Our next two nights at Constance Belle Mare Plage revealed a livelier, more expansive personality. Spread along a twokilometre beach, with gardens and an extensive collection of restaurants and leisure facilities, this was a resort where choosing what to do next could become an activity in itself. The long shoreline remained the main attraction, its sheltered waters inviting guests to alternate between exploration and unapologetic relaxation. The accommodation options were equally broad. Prestige Rooms offered comfortable beachfront or sea-facing stays, while Junior Suites provided additional room to settle in. Deluxe Suites featured separate living areas, and the private-pool villas took things further with secluded terraces for families or friends. Throughout the resort, the rooms' warm colours and modern furnishings complemented the natural setting without competing with it. Belle Mare Plage was particularly persuasive when it came to food. LaKaze, our arrival lunch venue, delivered a casual beachside atmosphere, with salads, grilled selections and desserts suited to leisurely afternoons. Dinner at Deer Hunter shifted the setting to the Legend golf course, overlooking the 18th green and offering a menu of regional flavours and specialities, including venison. Breakfast at La Citronnelle presented an altogether different challenge: deciding between its generous selection of international cuisines and live cooking stations. The restaurant also hosted our cooking class and subsequent lunch, a cheerful opportunity to engage with the culinary fact magazine

side of the resort rather than simply admire it from our seats. For dinner, La Spiaggia offered a more intimate oceanfront experience, with Mediterranean-inspired cooking served on a wooden deck. From casual beachside lunches to elegant evening dining, Belle Mare Plage certainly knew how to keep our appetites entertained. Golf was another major part of the hotel's identity, with two championship courses, Legend and Links. Our introduction at Legend allowed us a taste of the sport, although nobody was in immediate danger of being recruited for the professional tour. Elsewhere, swimming pools, water sports, a fitness centre and activities for younger guests ensured that different generations could follow their own holiday agendas. The spa appointment was a particularly welcome pause. Constance Spa provided treatment rooms, sauna and steam facilities, and opportunities to step away from the busier parts of the property. With massage sessions included in our itinerary, wellness had its rightful place alongside gastronomy and adventure. In a resort offering this much, finding time to do absolutely nothing required some determination.

An Elegant Finale at Prince Maurice A short transfer brought us to Constance Prince Maurice for our final night. The change in atmosphere was immediately noticeable. Set within extensive private grounds on the north-east coast, the hotel embraced a quieter style of 96

luxury, with lush vegetation, sheltered water and discreetly arranged accommodation. Where Belle Mare Plage encouraged us to roam, Prince Maurice made lingering in one place seem an equally appealing achievement. Its thatched-roof Junior Suites were distributed among the gardens, beside the beach and on stilts overlooking a natural fish reserve. Family Suites provided additional space, while the villas offered separate living rooms and, in selected beachfront options, private heated pools. The extraordinary Princely Villa added multiple terraces and two pools. Privacy and comfort shaped the experience, with furnished outdoor spaces encouraging guests to enjoy their surroundings at their own pace. Lunch at L'Archipel introduced the hotel's dining credentials. Overlooking the pool and beach, the partly open-air restaurant offered Mauritian-influenced gourmet cuisine in an elegant but approachable setting. Later, drinks at the floating bar provided a memorable prelude to dinner at Le Barachois. Reached along a wooden walkway, this extraordinary restaurant occupied floating decks above the fish reserve, with views across the lagoon. Seafood was the focus, but the setting alone made it one of the journey's most distinctive dining experiences. With a setting this impressive, the restaurant could probably have served toast and still received a standing ovation. A further spa session fitted into our stay, with Constance Spa's garden setting and thermal facilities adding to the sense of escape. The following morning's visit to Flacq Market offered a brief encounter with life beyond the resort gates before the journey towards the airport. From its lush landscapes to its vibrant local culture, Mauritius had given us plenty to discover, and we had thoroughly enjoyed every opportunity to do so.

Three Hotels, One Memorable Island What made this trip rewarding was not simply the chance to visit three excellent resorts, but the contrast between them. Le Chaland offered nature-led calm, Belle Mare Plage combined seaside leisure with an impressive culinary and sporting offering, and Prince Maurice provided an intimate, quietly luxurious conclusion. Each gave us plenty of reasons to linger, and together they showed how varied a Mauritian escape could be. As we prepared to return home, we found ourselves reflecting on just how comfortably we'd settled into the Constance way of life. From leisurely mornings to indulgent evenings, every day had brought something worth remembering. We had plenty of wonderful experiences to share with our readers, and an overwhelming desire to experience it all again. ✤

ARTS & CULTURE •

Tell us about your journey into art? When did it begin, and what were some of your earliest inspirations? I started out in graphic design, which still shapes how I see things, particularly colour, composition and how different elements come together. Over time, I was drawn to painting, ceramics and object design, each giving me a different way to express myself. My inspiration often comes from diary entries, dreams, memories and everyday moments that stay with me. I love how something deeply personal can feel familiar to someone else. Sometimes, a painting or an object can express what I’m feeling more naturally than words. You work across painting, ceramics, digital illustration and object design. Do you have a favourite medium, and how would you describe your artistic style? I couldn’t choose a favourite medium; each brings out a different side of me. Painting is expressive, intuitive and fast-paced. I begin with charcoal, sketching and writing almost like a diary, then add colour instinctively, concealing some parts and revealing others. Ceramics slows me down, teaching me patience and keeping me present. Digital illustration lets me explore scale, composition and grids, while object design brings my ideas into everyday life. My style sits somewhere between structure and spontaneity, with each medium offering a different way to think, feel and express myself. What inspired Moments, Seated, which was exhibited at Milan Design Week 2026 earlier this year? I’ve always been fascinated by how an empty chair can suggest someone’s presence, holding memories of a conversation, a pause, a prayer or someone who has left. That inspired Moments, Seated, a collection of miniature, hand-built ceramic chairs exploring presence through absence. Made without moulds, each carries imperfections and traces of my hands that become

part of its character. Their small scale removes their practical function, turning them into little vessels of memory. Together, they form a silent gathering, each suggesting the story of someone who might once have sat there. Tell us a little about your latest project, The One & A Hundred Faces. How did that come about? The idea began with a simple thought: we’re so different, but how different are we really? The One & A Hundred Faces explores individuality, human connection and how we recognise fragments of ourselves in others. It brings together 100 small acrylic paintings, each beginning with the same blank canvas and developing its own personality through colour, lines and marks. Seen together, these individual faces suggest something shared. I think we carry many versions of ourselves. The project is expanding into furniture, objects and an artist book, bringing these characters into everyday life. You’re also participating in the Design Doha Biennial 2026 this month. What can we expect to see from you? I’m also co-founder of The FN Project, an artist-led ceramics fact magazine

What I love most is bringing art into everyday life through objects people can use, live with and connect with. Your work features bold, vibrant colours. Why does colour play such an important role in your compositions, and what’s your favourite shade? To me, colour is closely connected to personality and emotion. The same shade can feel calm one day and bold or unsettling the next, depending on my mood and its surroundings. I choose my palettes instinctively, using colour to communicate feelings I can’t always put into words. I don’t have one favourite shade; my relationship with colour keeps changing with how I feel, what I’m creating and the colours around it. What advice would you give to budding artists in Bahrain? Matching tops and skirts drape artfully across the body, while the jacquard collarless jacket, that ties at the side, and cuffed wide-leg trousers evoke a relaxed, sophisticated feel. For men, the feel is more traditional with rich detailing in shirting fabrics, coupled with deep colour themes and comfort styling. Ulrika Schalin, Design Lead at H&M, said: “For this year’s collection, we’re excited to bring craft and confidence to Diwali dressing. It’s about rich textures and ornate details, a look that feels elevated and modern while remaining effortless to wear.” ✤ GO: VISIT WWW2.HM.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

What We’re (Still) Talking About? Right Man For The Job

Not On Our Bike

Vegemighty Stink

We’re currently trying very hard to ignore all election news – it’s not easy but the alternative is desperately depressing. However, this little snippet did raise a smile when it caught our attention. UPI reports that British Columbia man Brady Rogers, 33, managed to win election to his local authority, Kelowna City Council, despite repeatedly branding himself unqualified for the job. Brady ran an amusing campaign with slogans such as ‘I barely want to do

We absolutely love the recent tale of Londoners finding an alternative use for the city’s much maligned Lime e-bikes. In recent years, the infamous Lime Bikes have come in for criticism over parking issues and leg injuries. Several boroughs have even banned them in favour of rival firms. But it seems there is one group of people who are very much in favour of the quirky, two-wheeled transport, using the bikes as substitute steeds for modern-

A convicted murderer in Australia recently lost his battle to get Vegemite back on the menu in his Victoria jail, despite arguing that withholding the yeast-based spread breached his human rights. AP reports that Andre McKechnie, 55, took his battle to the state of Victoria’s Supreme Court, arguing that being refused Vegemite denied him his right under the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act to ‘enjoy his culture as an Australian in the community with other persons of Australian background’. The ban was imposed because prison

this’, ‘Just trying to pay my rent’, ‘Fine. I'll do it’ and ‘How hard can it be?’ Not exactly the most persuasive. Even his campaign website opened with the message: ‘Do I enjoy politics? No. Do I know what I'm doing? No. But am I qualified? Also no.’ It seems the local electorate appreciated his honesty and handed him the job with Brady declaring himself ready to serve and hopeful of doing a good job. Would that all politicians were so truthful.

day jousting competitions. In fact, news organisation LBC reported that hundreds gathered in the capital’s London Fields area for a jousting contest featuring opponents in what appeared to be full medieval armour! Apparently, it started as a joke but developed into a bona fide community beano, with video from the event going viral online, prompting bike rental company Lime to respond that its bikes are ‘not for jousting’. Spoilsports.

authorities say smearing items with Vegemite can disguise the smell of contraband, such as drugs, making them difficult for sniffer dogs to identify. But the prisoner, who claims the lack of Vegemite makes him sad, unsuccessfully put forward a whole range of arguments to the contrary, including a neighbouring state’s inclusion of the spread on its menu and the Australian Olympic Committee’s success in overturning a Chinese import ban on Vegemite ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. We reckon Mr McKechnie has too much time on his hands, but then, he is serving life.
