For me, a recent trip to Beirut was incredibly eye-opening; just being able to walk by the promenade, explore the different neighbourhoods, eat some amazing food, and generally people watch (it’s something I love doing!) made the long weekend one of the best I’ve had in a long time. But, more than anything, travelling to Lebanon helped to dispel all the negative stereotypes associated with the country. And that’s what travel does; it breaks cultural boundaries and allows you to experience a place all for yourself ! With that in mind, we’re hoping to inspire some of you to take the leap and get out there to discover new cultures. Starting p23 we’ve put together an awesome Continent Crawl, spanning all corners of the world, from South American Mayan ruins, to Japanese castles, and European waterfalls – we’ve got your summer travel plans covered. Perfectly wrapped in a seaweed sheet there lies a host of sumptuous ingredients that are sure to make any gourmand excited at the mere mention of the exotic and perfectly paired ingredients at Maki, Bahrain. Healthy brown rice, combined with mildly ‘spiced’ salmon, cool avocado, chilli oil, and ikura (salmon roe) – how delicious does that sound? This is the Oliver Temaki! The Temaki (hand-roll) concept is an age-old notion of a seaweed sheet, filled with solely sushi rice, and seafood, typically salmon, white fish, or tuna. Then the sheet is rolled into a Temaki (handroll) and handed to the guest to eat it as a sandwich, a Japanese take on the concept of the sandwich.

Maki took the same concept and kicked it up a few notches by introducing the namesake Oliver Temaki, and a star on the Maki menu named Fusion Temaki. This revolutionary Temaki substituted the traditional seaweed sheet with an equally yummy soya wrap, and the rice with delicious vegetables such as lettuce, avocado, carrots, and cucumber, while adding an extra taste dimension of shrimp tempura, and Maki’s special sauce. Need we say more? The iconic Empire State Building is a feat of true American accomplishment standing at 1454ft tall, being the 9th tallest building in the world. Millions flock to the 102-storey building’s famous observatory for the spectacular indoor and outdoor 360-degree views from the heart of Manhattan. Angkor Wat is the biggest religious monument in the world, devoted to the spiritual faith of Hinduism. Built in the 12th Century, the City of Temples has become a major tourist destination in Siem Reap, about 200 miles from the capital of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is the best preserved example of Khmer architecture in Cambodia and is so grand in design that some rank it among the “unofficial” wonders of the world. Angkor Wat consists of five central shrines, encircled by a moatand three galleries, and the best times to visit are sunrise and sunset. Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peak is usually veiled by clouds but on clear days the sight of the summit is one of the most arresting on the continent. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa but it’s also the largest freestanding mountain in the world. Made up of three peaks - Shira, Mawenzi and Uhuru - Mount Kilimanjaro, or Kili as it is affectionately known, was formed by volcanic activity about a million years ago. It’s an iconic, evocative destination and with so much to do in Kilimanjaro National Park too, this should be a memorable trip. Fly: Turkish Airlines to Kilimanjaro (www.turkishairlines.com).

One of the world’s most famous yet least visited archaeological sites, Easter Island is a small, hilly, and now treeless island of volcanic origin. Located in the Pacific Ocean, some 2200 miles off the coast of Chile, it is considered to be the world’s most remote inhabited island. That most famous feature here is the enormous stone statues called moai, some 250 of these ahu platforms are spaced approximately one half mile apart and creating an almost unbroken line around the perimeter of the island. Though they are not fudge-like or edible, these giant grass-covered hills are a breathtaking natural sight, found in Bohol Province, covering over 50sq kilometres. The approach on winding roads, to the mint-green limestone hills, is as amazing as actually climbing to the top of one. The symmetrical hills stand there in thousands of conical shapes, which vary from between 100 to 400ft tall. The best time to see the hills is in the dry season when the grass, which is vibrant-green throughout the year, dries up and turns brown, hence the aptly chosen name of Chocolate Hills. Feast your eyes on Godafoss, a.k.a the Waterfall of the Gods - you could lose all sense of space, time and reality here. A largely undiscovered waterfall in Iceland, Godafoss can be seen for kilometres around and is most beautiful at sunset. Its unique bow shape along with the lava rock surrounding make it a must see on your trip to North Iceland, and day trips are available from Akureyri. The awe-inspiring views around the fall and its enormous size truly reflect the natural beauty of this place, and make it a once-in-a-lifetime trip for all those who want a mix of serenity and adventure from their vacay. Possibly the most famous of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal is a stunning place. One of the most beautiful yet tragic love stories is engraved in the solid white walls of this building, as the Taj Mahal was built as a pure white-marble mausoleum, by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The enormous complex built around the Taj boasts lush green gardens, brown stone benches, perfectly mowed lawns and large reflective pools of water. There is also a Mosque to the left and a guesthouse to the right, both adding to the impressive awe of this mustsee wonder. Fly: Gulf Air to Delhi (www.gulfair.com).

Like something out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this cathedral in Moscow’s famous Red Square was built in 1561. The building is actually a collection of churches and stands out as an architectural anomaly for its time. No other buildings from the same era can be found that are architecturally similar to St Basil’s Cathedral. It’s another great landmark that you can really experience as you’re allowed inside. This time it’s a Spanish architectural anomaly, fusing modern art with gothic styles. Designed by the exceptionally creative Antoni Gaudi, the building is yet to be finished. Gaudi died in 1926 while still working on the astounding project which he took over in 1883. Gaudí’s conception of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona was based on the traditions of Gothic and Byzantine cathedrals, and at present, the main projects being undertaken are the construction of the west sacristy and the central towers. Make sure you visit the Gaudí House Museum, the model home at Park Güell where the architect lived for nearly 20 years. Fly: KLM to Barcelona (www.klm.com).

A building blunder that became Italy’s engineering marvel, construction on the Leaning Tower of Pisa began in 1173 and had reached only the third storey when architects noticed that the white-marble bell tower was leaning. As war broke out, the building was halted for over a century and it wasn’t until the late 14th century that the tower was finally completed, but nothing had managed to right the lean. Two spiral staircases run to the top of the tower. One has 294 steps; the other has 296 - two extra to compensate for the height difference. Today, following extensive work, the tower is safe from toppling, but it will never stand fully straight – not that tourists want it to! Fly: British Airways to Pisa (www.britishairways.com).

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the most substantial ancient structure in the world - and the most mysterious. According to prevailing archaeological theory - and there is absolutely no evidence to confirm this idea - the three pyramids on the Giza plateau are funerary structures of three kings of the fourth dynasty (2575 to 2465 BC). The Great Pyramid is attributed to Khufu (Cheops), another to Khafra (Chephren) next to it, and that of Menkaura (Mycerinus) is the smallest of the three. With so much history seeped in these structures, you can only imagine that the site in Cairo draws millions of tourists every year, so make sure your trip is well-planned to avoid busy times of the day. You will recognise this world wonder from the Indiana Jones films, and Petra is a place nothing short of awe-inspiring. The Arabian historical and archaeological city is famous for being cut and carved into the face of sheer red rock by the Nabatean people who settled in the area more than 2000 years ago. Petra is also famous for its water conduit system, and back when it was formed, the Nabataeans used it as a gateway for trade routes including silks and spices. The most famous structure in the city is the Treasury, though there is so much more to see. Acropolis in Greek literally means “the highest point of the town”. While virtually every city had an Acropolis, like Mycenae and Tyrins, the Athenian citadel became synonymous with the word in the minds of most people during the last two millennia. The Mycenaean civilisation established many important centres, one of which was Athens, and now the Acropolis of Athens is so famous, that it has become known as The Acropolis. The Parthenon is often also confused with the Acropolis, but is actually a structure within the Acropolis. As far as history goes, this place is chock-full of interesting knowledge about the Greek past. Fly: Gulf Air to Athens (www.gulfair.com).

If it’s lost cities you seek, look no further than the Mirador Basin in northern Guatemala. The area is home to some of the largest pyramids in the world and the largest ancient freeway system in the Western hemisphere, and it’s the cradle of Mayan civilization. The basin contains dozens of pre-classic Mayan cities — the oldest in existence — most of which remain unexcavated. Despite these historical riches, unless you’re an archeologist, you’ve probably never heard of the place. The Mirador Basin sees fewer than 100 foreign tourists a month, in part, because it’s hard to get to. If planned properly, the trek through the jungle is worth it. This is Asia’s answer to America’s Grand Canyon, though on a smaller scale. It is a three to four-hour drive from the former capital city of Kazakhstan, Almaty, and definitely well worth it. The distinctive natural landscape that the 200-kilometre canyon provides is simply stunning. Magnificent formations and colour, like the red clay walls of the canyon, are created through years of erosion and weathering. If you explore deep enough you’ll find that the “mini-Grand Canyon” is inhabited by strangely carved crevices and caves, and fantastic creatures. The Twyfelfontein Valley, in the north-west corner of Namibia, is a rocky site that contains around 2,000 rock carvings and in 2007, UNESCO approved it as a World Heritage Site. It’s ringed in ridges and domes of blistered rock, fractured by the forces of heat and time, and is one of the largest and most important concentrations of rock art in Africa. The dome shaped hills are 560 million years old and the rocks tell a story of a people and a time far older than the Damara, which is the oldest cultural group in the country. During take off and landing, either sip on a drink, suck on a sweet, chew gum or yawn widely to avoid your ears from getting blocked. These actions help equalise the pressure in your middle ear.

Planes make you dehydrated. Drinking alcohol or caffeinated drinks only further dehydrates you. Avoid them as much as you can, instead drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Dose up on B-complex and Vitamin C to give an extra boost to your immune system a few days before you travel. Planes aren’t called germ tubes for no reason.

With both heels on the floor, point feet upwards as high as you can go. Then reverse by lifting your heels high keeping the balls of your feet on the floor. Repeat cycle with 30-second intervals.

Lifting your feet off the floor, draw circles with your toes, moving one foot clockwise and the other anticlockwise. Reverse the circles. Do each direction for 15 seconds.

Bend forward slightly clasping your hands around one knee and bring it to your chest. Hold the stretch for 15 seconds and bring it down gently keeping. Repeat 10 times.

Keep your feet on the floor and hold your stomach in. Slowly bend forward and walk your hands down the legs to your ankles. Hold for 15 seconds and then slowly sit back up.

Raise both hands straight up over your head. Hold the wrist of the opposite hand and gently pull to one side. Hold the stretch for 15 seconds and repeat.

Relax your shoulders and drop your ears to the shoulder, gently roll the head forward bringing it up slowly to the other side. Hold each position for five seconds and repeat five times.

urated by Stafford and Sharabi art consutants, Father and Son presents the work of Kamal Abdullah Ali Al Abdulla, and his 11-year-old son Yaqoob. Kamal is a Bahraini family man with two sons, and a very artistic family. His wife is an art teacher whilst his son Yaqoob, alongside himself, and even the family’s housekeeper, are artists. Kamal works in acrylic, mixed media and collage, whilst Yaqoob who is in 5th grade at Kanoo International School, loves drawing zombies and other things from his vivid imagination. Hi Kamal! Tell us about your journey into art… I started in elementary school, specifically with the first exhibition that was held for G1 students who were requested to draw a picture about nature. For me, the attraction was something that is the absolute and infinite expression of the art; the ways through which the artist captures all that surrounds him, according to his personality and his own experience with reality. The exhibition Father and Son is quite special as you’ll be showcasing your work alongside you son Yaqoob’s artistic creations too – how does this make you feel as a father and an artist? I am incredibly pleased and this satisfaction is the result of achieving a rewarding goal with the substantial outcome which is the first dual exhibition in Bahrain presenting a father and son. A lot of emotion comes, also, from the interaction with the visitors. People with interest have showed and shared their impression and ability to relate with this collaborative concept. They understand that each piece of art work work represents an independent character and separate subjects, and bright colours characterised by joy. 62

Describe your artistic style for visitors coming to the exhibition... Visitors to the exhibition can, I believe, automatically understand my style through the variety of colours and materials used. They may recognise that my style contains the basic artistic schools of thought such as realism, modernity, and collage. Also, the show was synchronised with a short explanation for some of the pieces, so people can read more about the style here as well. Describe Yaqoob’s work for us – has he shown preference towards one type of art? Yaqoob has his own unique style covering different themes, and using a variety of colours. He loves drawing alien characters and dinosaurs, and different subjects that express our reality through cartoon, and a more childlike-style of imaginary characters. Were you Yaqoob’s introduction to art? Yaqoob discovered his talent through my experience, where he was always surrounded by colours and art works, until his own unique, artistic talent took the lead. First, he imitated, and now he has a style of his own that sets him apart from others in a world of cartoon characters and vibrant colours. Tell us about some of the tools and techniques that you use in your artworks? In my work I use many different kinds of materials and colours such as acrylic and collage supplies, anything that can be used in a painting. I also use recycling materials. What is it about art that is so appealing to both yourself and Yaqoob? Through art you can express without restrictions or obstacles. An artist has the ability to express endlessly and infinitely through difficult times and their own reality. They can dive into the ambiguity through indirect philosophical expression with codes and shapes. I think Yaqoob’s style was a copy of mine but in a different way; a way that captures the childish character, and his characters and colours became his unique and distinctive signature. 64

Describe the experience of being able to share such a vivid and beautiful practice like the arts with your son... My artistic experience with my son is the most beautiful thing ever. And through this exhibition, we are presenting something that is the first of its kind in Bahrain and the region; a collaboration between father and son in a special exhibition with completely different styles.

What’s your advice for young budding artists like Yaqoob? I advise young artists to pay relentless attention and continuous follow up on everything new in the field, as the world of art is rapidly changing as a result of contemporary developments and innovation. It is also very important for young artisst to receive special attention both in school and at home since artists can be quite sensitive; they must be supported and nurtured. What’s it about: This third Captain America film adapts the Civil War storyline from Marvel Comics as political interference in the Avengers’ activities pits two teams, and former allies, Captain America and Iron Man, against one another.

DIRECTOR: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo CAST: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Marvel has been churning out its biggest superhero stories for the big screen at an astonishingly fast pace, and this month sees the return of the first avenger – Captain America. Now, we know that the Marvel superhero ensemble can be quite hard to get your head around – and if they’re all meant to be on the same side, what’s up with the fighting here? Word of advice; a memory refresher is definitely due with a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) binge weekend before going to watch Civil War. That said, those of you who are clued up will know that after witnessing Superman and Batman battle it out, this is definitely the next highly anticipated superhero feud, and you can expect almost every other Avenger who’s already part of the MCU – and some newcomers – to put on the biggest and most badass display in what has been called a war movie, an action-thriller, and even a love story (the fraternal kind, that is, between Cap and his longtime friend Bucky). Here’s hoping that director duo Joe and Anthony Russo can live up to the buzz created by the Marvel fandom.

Not only are the Goo Goo Dolls still a thing, but this month sees the release of the band’s 11th studio album, Boxes. he very first thing I remember noticing as the image of the new R8 popped up in the pre-event presentation was the absence of the instantly recognisable top-to-bottom side blades that were a hallmark of the original model. They’ve been broken up into two separate panels, one behind the b pillar and one behind the side air vent. At first I thought this was a shame, but then I let it sink in and moved past it, and was able to look at the new R8 objectively. Despite being a decade old, the outgoing R8 still looked like a car of the future, which is testament to the pioneering design of the car. And yet the design of the new 2017 R8 is sharper and more angular, and the front fascia more aggressive, which all combines to make it look leaner, meaner and even more futuristic than the outgoing model, which is no small feat! With regards to the performance, the first thing you should know about the new R8 is 80

that it was developed side by side with the R8 LMS customer racing car, instead of the road car coming first and the racing model being developed from that. It therefore shares a lot of technology and components with the racing version – around 50% in fact. This includes the super lightweight aluminium and carbon fibre Audi Space Frame (ASF) chassis (weighing in at only 200kg), and the 5.2 litre V10 engine. This is a smart move on Audi’s part, because it results in a road car with the power and performance of a racing car, and a racing car with the usability required for their gentleman racing drivers. What does all this mean for the road car? Well, it means a mind-blowing combination of comfort and performance in a car that feels equally at home on a track and on the road. In normal driving conditions, the ride is smooth and comfortable, with plenty of interior space and headroom, and comfortable leather sports seats. You can throw it into corners – turn in is sharp and precise with practically no understeer, and you can control any oversteer with light corrections, so balanced is the chassis. In dynamic mode, the traction control isn’t too invasive – it interferes just enough to stop you heading backwards into a wall, but not enough to feel like it’s killing the power and, as a result, all your fun. The grip and handling is spectacular, and you can confidently explore the limits of not only the car’s capabilities, but also your own, without those moments of terror that shift things from fun to not so much. There is not nearly enough space on these pages to explain all the pioneering technological wizardry that has gone into creating such a result, but we can tell you it’s a masterpiece. It’s two-in-one – a track monster, and a luxury coupe a car that will make you feel like a hero on a circuit, and then let you wind down and relax on the drive home.

In addition, because of the ASF chassis and lightweight materials, the V10 Plus boasts a dry weight of only 1,454kg, which because of the mid-engine layout, is balanced almost equally between the front and rear chassis. The new all-wheel drive system can distribute torque freely between the axles, rather than the 60/40 power split of the outgoing R8, meaning that the full range of power can be sent to either the front or the rear of the car as required. This is done through the superb and lightning-quick S tronic seven-speed transmission and the intelligent Quattro drive system. The result is mesmerising. Bearing the GTS insignia, the latest addition to the Macan range features a re-engineered chassis, reinforced brakes, along with a 20hp increase from the Macan S. The concept is the brainchild of Matteo Panini and Mirco Pecorari, both natives of Modena, who have backgrounds in design and mechanics. Made in Modena (also the famous birthplace of Ferrari, Maserati, and other Italian automotive exotica), the manufacturers source authentic exhaust parts from racing teams and exotic cars and incorporate speakers, a subwoofer and electronics to make these wonderful finished products. They claim that the unique design of the speakers incorporating the metallic tubes adds a distinct quality to the audio produced by the speakers. We can’t personally attest to that, but having heard the speakers do their thing, we can definitely confirm that the audio is of a very high-quality, with a richness and volume easily on a par with other well-known premium audio speaker docks. The speakers can also be connected via lightning cable 88

and via Bluetooth, so you can stream from your laptop or keep your phone on you when you move around. The speakers finished with silver and green (F1 fans will recognise the colours), as you see on this page, are made using an exhaust pipe from the Mercedes AMG W04 F1 car from the 2013 season, although this one, unfortunately, is now sold. There are silver and red four-speakers too, from the OTTO (eight, for eight-cylinder) range, and this particular one is made from the exhaust pipes of an actual Ferrari 056 2.4l V8 engine from the 248 F1 car raced in the 2007 season. And the silver on silver speakers are made using a part from a Williams FW32 F1 car from 2010. Such specialised products will, unfortunately, come at a price. These speakers can set you back by anything from 6000 to 9000 Euros, depending on configuration and personalisation. hen your next craving for seafood strikes, the recently-opened venue at Coral Bay might just be the answer to curb your appetite. Samak takes prime position, located at the top of a high staircase, enclosed in a huge round space that offers panoramic views from every table in the restaurant. Our first impressions - the space is bright and airy, and with its breezy blue and white décor, it’s somewhat reminiscent of a seaside tavern that you’d find on the Mediterranean, but with a more elegant vibe for a casual lunch or dinner. There’s indoor and outdoor seating, and as the venue overlooks the waterfront with the marina and the Muharraq skyline in the distance, it’s easy to forget the everyday hustle and just relax with a chilled drink and glorious views. In fact, being the only licensed dining destination on the corniche strip, Samak is frequently packed on a Thursday evening as crowds flock in to enjoy some down time and a catch up with friends, with their choice of beverage in hand. Looking at the drinks menu, there’s nothing but choice here. From a large variety of cocktails, spirits, ales, and bubbly, as well as fresh juices and soft drinks, there’s absolutely something for everyone. We went for the fresh Pineapple and Strawberry juices. Each comes in a generously tall glass, topped with a cocktail parasol, tasting as delicious as can be! But, of course, the real show begins when the food makes its way out. Our starters consist of Hummous Beiruti, Tabbouleh, a Veggie Plate and a Mixed Seafood Salad. We quickly saw that Middle Eastern 112 fact magazine

touches are present in the menu too, adding a different dynamic to the seafood concept. Everything is incredibly fresh and presented neatly where the colours pop. Dip a carrot stick in the hummous and stay on the healthy track if that’s your foodie aim; or tuck into the mixed seafood salad made up of shrimp, calamari and an assortment of vegetables like lemongrass, onions, lettuce and tomato. The dressing used in the salad (which we’re told is a chef ’s secret!) is light but exquisite to taste! For mains, Samak offers a range of signature dishes, alongside sashimi, nigiri, temaki, and maki and special rolls. However, the

standouts of the dining experience, including the catch of the day and an assortment of the freshest and most popular fish, are displayed on a large bed of cold ice, waiting for diners to pick their favourite and have it cooked to their preference. We opted for two Faskar fish, cooked in completely opposite ways. The first was topped with tomato, coriander and ingredients that carried Mediterranean coastal hints – some would have called it a perfectly cooked, but plainer tasting dish. The second was a complete 180, taking our taste buds to the aromas and flavours of Thailand, with lemongrass and red and

green peppers really infusing the fish with a mouthwatering, exotic tang – we loved it! When it’s time for dessert, hands down, you must try the Cheese Cake – it’s soft and creamy and the ideal palate cleanser after a savoury-led meal! Though the venue wasn’t particularly busy on our visit (it had only been open around 20 days), the food and the service speak volumes. ahrain is awash in steakhouses. It’s a labour of love trying to find the ideal beef. The people of the isle love a perfectly scorched hunk of steak – blush pink on the inside – with a side of finely cut French Fries. The simple combination goes a long way. But CUT By Wolfgang Puck, despite its infancy on the scene, has acquired senior status among its beef brethren. Along with the opening of the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, CUT cultivated a lot of critical conversation – noise – good noise. CUT is all about steak the way you want it to be. There’s a legitimacy (courtesy of the preordering presentation of the different cuts of beef, some more marbled than others, by the waiters, brimming with expert knowledge) of what they offer. When you’re told that the restaurant gets weekly deliveries of far-flung ingredients from Japan, you know you’re in a good way. Kobe beef, anyone? We’re talking highly prized beef.

When you come up the twinkling spiral staircase into the restaurant, you immediately take in the burgeoning views of Bahrain Bay within the airy volumes of the interiors. There’s no cutting corners at CUT, everything is generously sized – from the cocktail glasses to the seating arrangements – there’s a plushness that is hard to fault. The décor is minimal – the emphasis is in the plate presentation. That’s not to say the starry light fixtures don’t create atmosphere. 120 fact magazine

“I hope you’re hungry because we have a lot to get through today,” says Ben Small, CUT’s Executive Chef. He made it sound like we were set to do obstacle training with little respite for the weak. Challenge accepted. Having been with the CUT family for over eight years, from Beverly Hills to Bahrain, we knew we were in capable hands. We start off with a selection of oozing warm bread, sprinkles of crunchy salt on top and a slab of rosemary infused butter. We were already singing praises. Combining items from the lunch and dinner menu, Chef Small had us on the Big Eye Tuna Tartare, Wasabi, Ginger, Togarashi Crisps and Tosa Soy to begin with. Along with a Jumbo Lump Crab (completely fresh no less) & Shrimp “Louis” Cocktail, Spicy Tomato Horseradish and a Wild Field Mushroom Ravioli with Parmesan Reggiano, the starters were creamy good and prickling with earthy flavours. The latter was particularly air-like and enjoyably slippery. Catering for the vegetarians (none among us mind you) the following dish was a winter inspired creation: a Line Caught Gulf Bass, Sunchoke Puree, Roasted Potato, Brussels Sprouts, Mushroom Emulsion. Sounds technical enough, doesn’t it? In taste, the scorched-to-a-crisp skin that had a batterstyle crunch into a baby soft chew of bass was a touch citrusy and winter-warming at the same time. On to the big boys. Of all the meats we had, the star of the steak lineup had to be the New York Rib Eye. Our waiter said: “I respect any woman who goes for a Rib Eye.” My steak, towards full on rare, was enough to make a Paleo abiding person cry with joy. It was melt-in-your-mouth tender. With it a number of complimenting sides – Tempura Onion Rings, Hand-Cut French Fries with Herbs, Creamed Spinach with Fried Organic Egg and Cavatappi Pasta “Mac & Cheese” Aged Cheddar. It was simply perfect. Somehow there’s room for dessert after all that. The Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Whipped Crème Fraiche and Gianduja Chocolate Ice Cream is not to be missed, especially if you like that hot and cold experience. Call Me biaSed, but my dream destination would probably be the Yarra Valley region in the south-eastern state of Victoria, in Australia. I spent my tender teenage years living there, and have the fondest memories of cantering through its leafy country lanes on horseback. At that time, the area was mostly made up of large paddocks of livestock, a handful of hobby farms, and very few vineyards to be found. Fast-forward 20+ years, and like most things Melbourne, the Yarra Valley has morphed into the most fabulous foodies fantasy land. Tucked between the rolling green hills you’ll find an enormous array of architect-designed tasting rooms, each with it own unique vista and more importantly, worldclass wines. A multitude of dining options are also available. These range from the more casual concepts such as Innocent Bystander with its onsite brewery and bakery, to the extravagant experience that is Levantine Hill. Good Days Ahead ChrisTAL DEnnis

Only a Few more months until summer and you’ve been squatting, lunging, lifting weights doing burpees, drinking green smoothies, coconut milk and almond milk and you feel EPIC, but, unfortunately, not everyone will feel your joy. The sad truth is once you set out on your health and fitness journey and your goals become a reality, you will find out who your true friends are. Some of the comments that my clients have received from friends and family are heart breaking; but what you need to remember is that this journey is yours and you’re making this change for you and not them. This is the time to take charge of your life and it will feel good. As I said, summer is coming, so with that new body and new mindset, run out and buy some new summer clothes. One of the great things that will come with a lifestyle change is confidence, so when these people try and put you down it may still hurt a little but it will roll off your back much easier. What you need to remember about these negative people is that they are jealous and unhappy with their own lives and the only way to make themselves feel better is to put others down. Remember the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of your journey and if you’ve reached them reward yourself and then set new ones to keep you motivated. Just remember you are EPIC, so keep it that way.

SuMMer iS aPPrOaChing. With it comes so much; the hot steamy days, the wonderful warm evenings, and not to mention school holidays. Days when kids are free to enjoy their time for a glorious 60 days or so. Some of us are lucky enough to have a getaway during the summer holidays. I know I look forward to them with such relish. Wherever you choose to go for the summer, any place in the world will have a special feeling all of its own. And within that is an opportunity to create moments and memories that are special. I know that special moments often happen by chance, when you least expect it, but I kinda like the idea of creating a space for the opportunity of as many special moments as possible. And we can leave special moments to chance, but we can also plan and create them and then allow them to unfold just as they do. Maybe we can listen to the loved ones in our lives and hear what their hopes and dreams are for the trip and try our best for those dreams to come true. Just the fact that you were thinking of them while trying to create something beautiful for them is the making of a special moment of its own. To lovely lazy days, to summer activity-filled with fun, to family and friends spending beautifully-connected times. Here’s to fun summer travelling!
