DIRECTOR OMAR SHAHEEN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GREG HUGHES EDITOR-IN-CHIEF SHABANA ADAM (shabana@fact-magazine.com) ASSISTANT EDITOR AANCHAL DUGGAL

I

f I was to ever write a book, you’d better believe that there would be an entire chapter dedicated to food. It’s the one common factor in the world that can bring people from all walks of life, cultures and backgrounds together - no matter the language barrier, the unfamiliar ingredients and the complete lack of being in your culinary comfort zone. This is what I love about a good plate of food - it’s a universal language and a great ice breaker. With that said, and as our team continues to eat their way through the island's diverse offerings, we thought it only fitting to take you on an Epicurean Expedition around the world. How? Turn to p29 and begin your voyage with our pick of some of the world’s best cuisines and dishes to have gone viral on the gastronomy scene and, more importantly, we tell you where to try out these fabulous items in Bahrain. For those of you planning a weekend escape this month, consider a few nights in Dubai. Why? The answer is in our Arts Exclusive on p53. If you’re really looking to impress a loved one or simply want to spend time watching something so awe-inspiring that it'll blow you away every second you're there, check out the one-of-a-kind aquatic theatre show La Perle by Dragone - I can’t think of a more thrilling spectacle than this to encounter this month. Staying on the delicious track to all things tasty, this month’s dining features are an absolute treat. Our Culinary Spotlight takes place at the drool-worthy, Bluefield Burger (p89), whilst the Foodie Corner takes a casual turn at Baharat's BBQ Night (p93), and there's plenty of palate-pleasing inspiration with this month's mouth-watering FACT Finds - the Baolicious Festival at Meisei (p8) and yummy Mother's Day picks (p14). There’s no excuse to be staying in every night! As usual, we bring you the best in hospitality, fashion, beauty, motoring, tech and interiors to name but a few of the fun pages you can find in our March issue. We’re happy to be rid of the short month - bring on the 31 days! Until the time of April Fools - enjoy the read!☺

ALSO KNOWN AS STEAMED buns or baozi, bao is a complete meal conveniently packed away in a white, warm, soft bun. We had our first bite of this smooth and soft shell packed with tender brisket, back in late 2016. Since then, the bao has become a cool, creative favourite at any dining table where good Chinese, Asian or contemporary food is served. Bahrain and the region has now put a spotlight onto this incredible Asian carb experience which is essentially a steamed bun filled with ingredients that vary from meat to vegetables (or both). At Meisei, you can enjoy a selection of naturally-coloured and uniquely-flavoured Bao buns for a limited time only. The Meisei Baolicious Festival features four new, mouth-watering 8

Italian – Pizza Margherita

Japanese – Sushi

The margherita is a humble combination of dough, tomato sauce and cheese, and if cooked with good, fresh ingredients, it can prove a highly satisfying meal. Though the pizza all over Italy would be more than palate-pleasing, it’s actually the birthplace of the margherita – Naples – where you’ll find the most appetising choices. It was in 1889 when chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi, created a pizza resembling the colours of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil), for Queen Margherita of Savoy. Since then, the modest pizza has grown into one of the most recognisable symbols of Italian food culture.

Sushi looks so simple and pretty, but it is in fact an intricate dish in terms of presentation and knowing which flavours work well together. One thing’s for sure though, sushi is causing a dramatic shift in dining habits the world-over. The nigiri and tuna rolls we eat today are a far cry from the pungent, riceless, barrel-fermented stuff that originated in the 3rd century B.C. Now we have pinwheel-shaped rainbow rolls and sushi masters trading their raw fish skills with culinary connoisseurs. Trying sushi in Japan is a must, but we have to say, this region does sushi and maki rolls, excellently.

British – Fish & Chips

Indian – Biryani

Definitely the most famous of all food in England. This great comfort food can be enjoyed as a greasy takeaway, traditionally wrapped in white paper, or in a more upscale environment at restaurants too. We recommend a trip up north to English counties like Lancashire or Yorkshire, where fish and chips is still the go-to dish and mostly enjoyed with a side of mushy peas, and this is also where you’ll find some of the best ‘chippies’ in the country to pick up your own bag of this hearty, hot dish.

By far India’s ultimate rice dish! Be it with chicken, lamb, prawns, or vegetables, this is a lavish dish that visitors to India absolutely need to try. It’s speculated that the Mughals introduced the modern biryani to India, which is made up of rice, a number of spices and condiments, and your chosen meat and/or vegetables. This is a rather sophisticated and skilled dish to prepare; you can make it pakki, meaning cooked, where the cooked meat and cooked rice are layered, or you can prepare biryani the kacchi way, where raw marinated meat is layered with raw rice before being cooked together. Our favourites include the mouthwatering Hyderabadi biryani and the super spicy Memoni biryani.

Spanish – Paella

Tex-Mex – Fajita

Paella is by far Spain’s most famous food offering. The rice dish includes different combinations of vegetables and meats or seafood, and is normally seasoned with saffron, but also has other spices depending on the recipe and area in Spain it comes from. Paella was originally farmers’ and farm labourers’ food, cooked by the workers over a wood fire for lunchtime. It was made with rice, plus whatever was to hand around the countryside like simple veggies and, occasionally, rabbit or duck, and on special occasions, chicken. Now one of the most popular paella combos has to be the seafood variety! This is a colourful dish and the fun part is that you have to eat it straight out of the pan.

The fajita is no doubt the product of the ethnic melting pot that makes up the American table. Fajitas appear to have made the quantum leap from campfire and backyard grill to commercial sales in 1969, putting Tex-Mex cuisine (a blending of Texas cowboy and Mexican panchero foods) on the world map. Back in the day, it was skirt steak that was a prime ingredient for the delicious fajita but nowadays – anything goes. You can fill up a fajita with pulled beef, tasty chicken strips, black beans, grilled shrimps and so much more – the choice is yours and the combo is heavenly.

Chinese – Dim Sum

English – Afternoon Tea

Thank the Cantonese people for introducing the world to dim sum which has a rich history and tracks back to the days of ancient China when travellers along the Silk Road broke their journey by stopping at tea houses. It was discovered that drinking tea helps digestion, so small pieces of food were offered with the tea. And so, the tradition of dim sum or yam cha (drinking tea) began. Dim Sum refers to small bite-sized dishes which can be savoury or sweet and prepared steamed, baked or fried. Tastes, flavours and fillings are of a great variety – from Shrimp dumplings (siu mai) to bbq chicken buns (char siu bao) and even veggie gyoza – this has to be one of the best food exports to come out of China.

Ok, so it’s not a type of cuisine but it’s definitely one of the most popular food trends in Bahrain, and the world. Afternoon Tea dates back to 1840 England when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford would become hungry around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. What we love about this tradition is the mix of sweet and savoury servings – from finger sandwiches packed with cream cheese and salmon, to delicious cakes and pastries, and, of course, mouth-watering scones adorned with clotted cream and jam. In this part of the world, Afternoon Tea comes in all forms – Arabian, Japanese and British too – so you’ve got plenty of choices.

South East Asian

BBQ

Probably the most diverse of all cuisines – the term South East Asian is applied to everything from noodles to bento boxes, curries and stir-frys so if you find a place that does a good variety of South East Asian food – take a seat and tuck in. There are many staples of Asian cuisine – rice, noodles, spices, herbs, exotic vegetables and even meat. In Thailand, you’ll find lemongrass is a widely-used ingredient, whilst in Malaysia coconut rice is a popular serving and Indonesia is known for its Sambal Kecap (Chili and Soy Sauce). Flavour and palate-pleasing textures is what defines this varietyfilled cuisine – and it’s one that rarely disappoints.

This carnivorous feast needs no introduction especially as we’re currently enjoying the last of what’s left of the BBQ season. Though it’s not clear where the term BBQ, or barbeque/barbecue originated – according to Time magazine, the conventional wisdom is that the Spanish, upon landing in the Caribbean, used the word barbacoa to refer to the natives' method of slow-cooking meat over a wooden platform. Whether it’s over an outdoor pit, in the oven or sizzling on a grill, the popular method of slowly cooked meat is as patriotic as it gets when it comes to throwing a true summer party or garden soiree. And don’t forget to slather your choice of meat in sauce – and keep room for seconds!

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Always Ascending

Bible of Love

By Franz Ferdinand

Reminding us of the dance-floor post-rock of their 2004 debut LP, Always Ascending retains their signature musical excellence while still sounding brand new. Their first album without guitarist Nick McCarthy marks the start of a whole new era for the band. With the addition of new member Julian Corrie, the Scottish indie rock band aim to inject a hint of electronics into the mix. A departure from their more guitardriven roots, the lead single is an ambitious and experimental turn for Franz. A sonic representation of the whole record, it is the bop you never knew you needed! Dubbing themselves as the “Futuristic naturalistic” genre, the band refuses to be put into a box. A synth and sax-heavy track, Feel The Love Go is as promising as their catchy lead single. Merging electronics with back-tobasics indie, the band is truly hitting some new territory with this punchy new record, sure to keep both devoted fans and critics very happy! 44

LA PERLE BY DRAGONE There’s been a great buzz in the UAE since aqua theatre show La Perle by Dragone opened at Al Habtoor City late last year. The dawn of a new era of entertainment, the show is an incredible feat for performing arts in Dubai. A

new show produced and created by Dragone, one of the world’s most revered cultural creative companies has been causing a stir in Dubai for a few months now. Located in the heart of Al Habtoor City, La Perle is the region’s first permanent show taking place in a tailormade, state-of-the-art aqua-theatre. Directed by the legendary artistic director Franco Dragone and brought to Dubai by the Al Habtoor Group, La Perle is a breathtaking fusion of artistic performance, creative imagery and ground-breaking technology, which takes inspiration from Dubai’s rich cultural past, vibrant present and aspirational future. Embodying the spirit of Arabia, La Perle features a cast of 65 premier artists performing gravity-defying aqua and aerial feats with the assistance of 70 specialised technicians in the innovative and intimate 1,300-seat theatre. The theatre itself features an ‘aqua-stage’ filled with 2.7 million litres of water, which has the ability to change from a dry platform to aquatic stage and vice versa. You’ll see daredevil performers dive into the waterfilled stage from a height of 25 metres and fly around the auditorium on highpowered winches at a speed of 15 kmp/h. Combining cutting-edge stagecraft and progressive technology, La Perle is a stunning spectacle in, on and above water. All is not as it appears though, as the stage transforms, thanks to a visual feast of high-tech, 3D projections, transporting the audience to awe-inspiring dimensions that belong only in a dream world. With an international cast of 65 skilled artists, each demonstrating their extraordinary set of superhuman aquatic and aerial stunts during a live 90-minute show, the theatre has been custombuilt to provide a truly immersive and visually captivating live entertainment experience. FACT meets one of the women responsible for putting this magnificent show together – Resident Artistic Director, Tara Young, who sheds some light on exactly what goes on behind the scenes and into the making of the mesmerising La Perle by Dragone…

Hi Tara! Let’s take it back to the beginning – how and when did you venture into the world of performing arts? I was born in Calgary, Canada and began dancing at the age of three – it was always my dream to be on the Broadway stage and when I was 19, I received my first big break dancing with Liza Minnelli in Radio City Music Hall – talk about dreams coming true! It something that I loved, but I and others around me, soon realized that my true passion lay backstage, in a more caring and managerial role. From that moment, I moved into the Creative Teams and transitioned into an Associate Director/Choreographer and I’ve been on this journey ever since.

La Perle is a show that has never been done before in the region, a true first of its kind – it’s so spectacular, it’s hard not to fall in love with it!

Why La Perle – what was it about this show that made you say YES and come to Dubai? I said “yes” to La Perle and Dubai for two reasons, the first one was that I knew I was creating something that could really make a difference to a region. Previous to Dubai, I was working in China and it was a similar situation, we were bringing a show, a concept, that had never been done before. The second reason was Franco Dragone. Franco asked me to be the Resident Artistic Director and I couldn’t say no, he’s a creative genius. La Perle has quickly become the talk of the town in Dubai – what do you believe it is about this show that appeals to UAE audiences ? La Perle is a show that has never been done before in the region, a true first of its kind – it’s so spectacular, it’s hard not to fall in

love with it! There are so many reasons why the show is so appealing to the UAE, I think the main reason is because the show immerses the audience, transporting them to the dream-like world that we have created. The show is a reflection of Dubai, just as the city is at a crossroads of tradition and heritage combined with technology and modernity, La Perle contains the same themes and both residents and visitors of Dubai are really embracing this. The show is packed with performing artists doing everything from motorcycle stunts to flying through the air at crazy speeds – it’s visually thrilling. Can you share with us some of the ways in which you have helped to enhance La Perle? My role of Resident Artistic Director is to maintain Franco Dragone’s creative integrity within the show. It’s like he has given birth and it’s now down to me to raise the child. Just like a child, the show is a constantly evolving process, new artists will bring new skills and life to the show and it’s my job to direct these changes to be just how Franco envisions them. To date, what has been the most difficult or challenging aspect of being the Resident Artistic Director for La Perle and how have you overcome these? This job can be challenging, which I adore. Yes, it can be difficult but I rarely choose to look at it this way. I have chosen this business and I know that there is always ups and downs in show business but overcoming this is the magical part of life. fact magazine

I love to go above and beyond in my role because for me this is the most gratifying. We are doing entertainment to share emotions, excitement and most of all a one of a kind experience. As an Artistic Director I like to keep perspective and remember this daily. There is always a solution, the journey is in finding it. On the other hand, what has been the most enjoyable and rewarding element of working on La Perle? The most rewarding element is the opportunity to work with such talented, passionate and dedicated human beings everyday. From the 65 artists to the wonderful Artistic Team, seeing what we can achieve on a daily basis makes my job so enjoyable. I also love seeing the reaction of every audience member and hearing their comments as they exit the theatre – it makes the hard work and long hours worth it. You’ve worked on some the biggest and most notable Broadway Shows, Musicals, and National Tours in the world – do you still enjoy the grind and what keeps you fascinated with this industry? think I always will. To me, nothing beats the emotion and atmosphere that live entertainment provides. On Broadway or any of the incredible live entertainment roles I have had, I can use my talents and knowledge to help, give guidance and support the wider team. I love the feeling of family that you get with working in the entertainment industry and that no two days are the same, it is fascinating. Franco Dragone has completely changed and reinvented the genre of theatre and live entertainment – after such an illustrious career in this sector, what would you like to leave your mark on... a legacy to be remembered by? Well…. I would like it if I truly have a made a difference with the people I have worked with. Perhaps even helped them grow, change, and enhance what they came here to do. I look at life in such a way that if we are learning and growing we are LIVING. If we stay stagnant this is where it becomes

tricky. So hopefully I can inspire on a daily basis. The future is unknown, but in my nature I want to care, nurture and guide the people I am in contact with. Helping young people grow in this business would be so incredible. Maybe a school where I could oversee as an Artistic Director would be amazing. Finally, tell us three personal or professional goals you would love to achieve in 2018… I have many goals both personal and professional. I don’t think I can put them into a list of three, but I will say… For today I am working on an overall goal to live every day with the word UNSHAKEABLE in my mind. I like to focus on a word that can empower me. What if every challenge or difficulty that comes my way in 2018 I can say that I know for sure I am unshakeable? I can handle anything that comes my way. I will practice doing this through being gracious, patient and of course joyful. This most certainly means to also be flexible in my thinking, and this one part of working as an expat you are challenged daily because we are out of our comfort zone. This is one of the greatest parts of working internationally, we are tested daily and for this is I am extremely grateful. ✤

POWER AND PERFORMANCE:

THE 2018 PORSCHE PANAMERA 4S

fact magazine

• ISLAND RIDES

Porsche have proven their class once again with the Panamera 4S, reaffirming the motoring giant’s iconic status.

W

hen someone offers you the keys to a 2018 Porsche Panamera 4S, you simply say “Yes please!” keep quiet and hope they don’t change their mind. We at FACT had this exact experience when handed those very keys from Porsche Centre Bahrain, Behbehani Brothers w.I.I. and were told we only had to return them the following day. Nice! At first glance it was clear the master designers at Porsche have created a stylistic link between the 4S and the iconic 911. This second generation Panamera boasts the typical Porsche flyline with pronounced shoulders, athletic flanks and a roofline that dips 20mm lower at the rear for perfect aerodynamics. The refined exterior of this four-door coupé includes a brand new front-end design complete with a crossbar in the radiator grille. This emphasises the vehicle’s width as well as the stylish, arrow-shaped bonnet. LED headlights finish off the front with a flourish, whilst at the back end, three dimensional LED rear lights that include integrated four-point brake lights, interconnected by a narrow LED strip, result in a unique night design. The inclusion of larger wheels gives this car an even more powerful 66

fact magazine

presence, adding to its already sporty appearance. As we gently lowered ourselves into the front of the vehicle, taking time to savour the experience, it was instantly obvious that pride and money had gone into every little design detail. It came as no surprise that only the very finest of materials have been used throughout the interior. The seats were comfortable and firm at the same time, exactly what one would want for this experience and the newly designed steering wheel felt perfect in our hands. In addition, the 4S offers the best layout of any model in the Porsche luxury class, with a 40:20:40 split of the folding rear bench backrests. This plus the 495 – 1304 litre luggage capacity makes this vehicle very practical for everyday use, perfect for a family and luggage. Other great features include a panoramic tilt roof, massage seats, ambient lighting and a 3D high-end sound system from Burmester. The designers behind this beautiful machine have put a huge amount of thought into the functionality as well as the easy interaction of the new Porsche Advanced Cockpit. A completely new display and control concept greets the driver and passengers upon entry. The intuitive user interface combined with the 12.3 inch display touchscreen, takes the operation of the communication, convenience and assistance systems to a new level. All hard keys and conventional instruments throughout the vehicle have been reduced and replaced with touchsensitive panels and individually configurable displays. We found all these to be extremely helpful elements of an already occupant focussed vehicle.

“WHAT PORSCHE HAVE MANAGED TO ACCOMPLISH WITH THEIR LATEST OFFERING IS AN EFFORTLESS MERGER BETWEEN A SPORTS CAR AND A LUXURY SALOON.”

Initial inspections completed, we steered her out onto the road with a huge amount of anticipation. As we eased down on the accelerator, the truth about this hugely improved Panamera came to life. Modifications to the engine, transmission, chassis and overall design concept, makes it a performance icon in the luxury class. The 4S boasts a 2.9 litre twin-turbo engine that produces 440 hp with a top speed of 289 km/h. It can shoot from 0 – 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds! Believe us when we say that it is hard to breathe whilst this kind of acceleration is taking place. The Mode Switch is an intuitively operated rotary ring on the steering wheel, which can be used to activate one of four driving modes (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus or Individual). This ensures the perfect settings for various environment types. The Panamera 4S applies its power to the road via Porsche Traction Management (PTM) – a permanent, fully variable all-wheel drive system. Tuned to the specific driving situation, PTM sensors continually monitor wheel speeds providing perfect performance on dry roads as well as in wet conditions. What a great driving experience! Yet another fantastic feature of this mechanical beast is its considerably improved fuel economy and reduced fuel emissions. What Porsche have managed to accomplish with their latest offering is an effortless merger between a sports car and a luxury saloon. This boils down to an assurance of comfort, style and of course, power! Although it was tough to hand back the keys the following day, we were left with the memory of a near perfect ride. ✤

LAPTOP UNDERDOG With a market that’s ever expanding and improving, finding a laptop that’s best for you can truly be a task. So, if you’re someone who’s difficult to please but also simple in your asks, Dell’s XPS 13 may just be exactly what you’re looking for! FACT explores…

W

hen it comes to technology, our trusty laptops are a universally coveted gadget. Be it binge-watching on Netflix or trying to make that looming deadline, these prized possessions surely seem to get the job done. Enter the Dell XPS 13. Light, powerful, aesthetically appealing and reasonably affordable, the XPS 13 is quite possibly the best laptop in the market right now. Refined further than ever before, the Dell XPS 13’s latest series of changes have made it a showstopper for the third year in a row. Boasting a design that feels premium yet not over the top, the laptop blends a metallic exterior with a carbon-fiber interior. Making it the ‘world’s smallest 13-inch laptop’, the next-generation InfinityEdge display is a total game changer. That being said, the stunning new 4k Ultra HD display and new colour option called Rose Gold on Alpine White have definitely impressed us the most. Featuring a 0.65% antireflective coating, the display aims to counteract the downfalls of all touchscreens and screen glare. While the carbon fiber and aluminum chassis ensures better endurability than most systems of its size. Apart from being a serious looker, the device is also equipped with one of the

best Windows touchpads. Impressive fluidity as well as smooth and accurate multi-touch gestures- it makes for a solid typing experience! As for processor performance, eclipsing most of its competitors featuring 7th-generation chips, the 8th-generation processor is a strong competitor and a worthy successor that truly makes its presence known. A major improvement to its predecessor, the XPS 13 9370’s Thunderbolt 3 ports support four-lane PCI connections so you can use the laptop with an eGPU for serious gaming. That said, despite being armed with gaming-ready integrated graphics, they aren’t nearly as good as others in the market. The newest XPS 13 model also marks the turning point on their webcam placement. The 720p webcam comes equipped with four microphones and produces visuals as sharp as the latest MacBook Pro, while the new IR lens work well for speedy logins using Windows Hello. If an efficient battery life is one of major requirements, look no further! Among the largest batteries in any 13-inch laptop, the XPS 13 claims an impressive 22hour run. Pleasant visuals, stunning design, solid battery and stronger heat dissipation, there’s plenty going on in Dell’s newest release. As for us, the XPS 13 remains one of the best laptops in the tech world. Let us know what you think! ✤ fact magazine

HIM The menswear purposefully elevates classic pieces such as the tailored jacket, shirting, a waistcoat and the crewneck jumper by playing around with colour and luxe fabrications. New silhouettes are introduced through subtle asymmetric cuts, paper-bag waist trousers, patch pockets and structured, oversized shapes. The result is familiar yet a little unconventional. Andreas Löwenstam, H&M’s Head of Design, Menswear, says: “The dualities in this collection are key to the modern man – traditional tailoring and classic workwear, city power dressing and calm casualwear, soft and technical fabrics, luxe and street. s we walked into the turquoise-hued interiors of Bluefield Burger, in Al Raya Mall, Juffair, we were immediately greeted by a laid-back yet incredibly chic ambience. Featuring walls luxuriantly adorned with graffiti as well as quirky installations and decorative elements, it serves as the perfect place to relax with loved ones or colleagues as you indulge on amazing burgers or scrumptious cookies. From families enjoying a quiet brunch to people indulging in quick business lunches, the restaurant’s delightful mix of patrons is a true testament to its menu versatility. The answer to all your cravings, Bluefield Burger boasts an extensive choice of everything from breakfast favourites to a decadent selection of desserts. In their bid to ensure the excitement of our taste buds, the restaurant’s revamped new menu features an array of healthier options and it was nothing short of a happy surprise. We started off our culinary expedition with an American classic, Tater Tots with Tomato and Mozzarella. Gooey cheesy goodness on a bed of hearty tater tots, the potatoes were wonderfully seasoned and crispy, while the tomato added the perfect amount of zest to the mix. Comfort food for the win! An instant favourite for everyone on the table, our next dish of Crispy Cheese Rolls and Sweet Chilli Dipping Sauce is the ultimate snack food. The cheese rolls are light and fluffy, while the sweet chilli sauce packs a ton of gorgeous flavour – it’s a match made in food heaven! Borne out of a love of all-natural and healthy Mediterranean cooking as well as the world-famous American kitchen, the Bluefield Burger lifestyle concept gives you the very best of both worlds. Freshly prepared using herbs and locally sourced vegetables, their vibrant selection of signature bowls are every healthy diner’s dream. Quinoa Falafel, Edamame, Dried Cranberries, Sweet Potato, Chopped Kale and Tomato, the Falafel Super Bowl not just tastes incredible but is also oh-so-good for you. A refreshing blend of textures 90

and flavours, the salad is definitely our newest green obsession! While every item on the restaurant’s menu is equally drool-worthy, their incredibly flavourful and juicy burgers are what makes the Bluefield experience so unique and complete. The Californian, a delectable medley of Grilled Lemon Chicken, Sun Dried Tomatoes, Roasted Red Pepper, Rocket, Avocado and Roasted Pepper Aioli is a delightful blend of rich tastes and textures in every bite. Embellished with a collection of special sauces freshly prepared in their kitchen, the combination of the succulent chicken and the light-as-air homemade buns is

absolutely to die for. Apart from some totally binge-worthy savoury options, the restaurant also offers a sinful collection of handcrafted desserts. From their homemade melt-inyour-mouth cookies and Greek Donuts to the light and creamy Bubble Waffles and Gluten Free Pancakes, there’s something to satisfy every sweet tooth! his particular dining experience will leave you questioning what day of the week it is as Baharat elevates a Wednesday BBQ buffet to the standards of a Friday brunch, brimming with a choice of char-grilled delights, sides and delicate desserts. Baharat is aptly named as it is not only the generic word meaning ‘spice’ in Arabic but it is also a sumptuous blend of ingredients which adds depth, warmth and a unique peppery heat to a variety of cuisines from Egypt to Greece. This fusion of top class ingredients and flavours is exactly what Baharat represents and delivers with understated elegance amidst colourful glass lanterns and glistening fairy lights. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the restaurant supervisor John who then delivered us into the safe hands of Sous Chef Anish for an informative and mouth-watering tour of the stations both inside and out. majority of the expertly crafted baked goods and desserts were housed inside the restaurant. A selection of simmering soups provided a fabulous amuse bouche. For those craving something lighter and crisper the salad bar was generous enough to be considered a meal in itself. Close by was a sumptuous dessert fountain with cascading waves of glossy chocolate accompanied by cold morsels, either healthy or naughty depending upon the preference of the diners. Delicious, delicately crafted pastries in every colour of the spectrum, ranging from perfectly

geometric mousse topped tarts to glass-like glazed bombes and unctuous cheesecakes were presented alongside decadent fruit platters . As Chef Anish led us outside I was heartened to see that we would not necessarily be saving the best until last. The platters of side dishes were varied in order to provide the perfect accompaniment to the freshly prepared, grilled meats. Chefs prepare the delicately spiced and seasoned dishes in the open kitchen and sear everything to perfection on the open grills. The on site tandoor oven bakes up a storm, infusing it’s produce with a smoky authenticity which can not be replicated. Asking which of the BBQ staples stood out for us is a little like asking a parent to choose their favourite child. If pushed, then the juicy tenderloin steak and the BBQ ribs in a show stopping sauce were complimented by the sweet potato and marshmallow mash which is best described as a ‘guilty pleasure’ and are a must ! A particular highlight for my companion was situated on the terrace where a converted car had been employed as a grilling station! Truly delightful. The restaurant was named as Citi Fact ‘Best International Cuisine’ 2017 which should offer would be diners an insight into the standard of food on offer. The Deux Sons provide musical accompaniment to the BBQ buffet which is offered every Wednesday from 7pm onwards. ✤ fact magazine

Getting Back On Track

Childhood Food Faves

So, it’s only four months until summer and your new year’s resolutions have gone to pot and you’ve wasted money on a gym membership that you’ve only used twice. You see your friends getting ready for the Colour Me Run or one of the other events coming up and you wished you hadn’t stopped but you don’t know how to get back on track. Try and find something new. If you’ve always gone to the gym and gone straight to the cardio machines day in day out; sounds like you need a new challenge. There are plenty of new gyms out there with new activities that you might find much more interesting and a much more exciting way to get your cardio in like Muay Thai or Boxing and try and get one of your friends to come along with you if you’re feeling a bit shy. Make sure you get enough sleep; when you don’t get enough sleep it really makes it hard to work out the next day so make sure your get those seven to eight hours in. Plan what you’re going to have for breakfast and if you’re lost for new breakfast ideas try Pinterest and find healthy recipes. If you don’t like a group exercise environment find a Personal Trainer who likes to change things up and uses different equipment to keep things interesting. Try not to be too hard on yourself and get pampered from time to time. ✤

What foods remind you most of your childhood? Most of my mealtime memories are typically Australian, apart from the delicious lasagna (Italian) my mother made, or the Friday night fish ‘n’ chips (British) with steamed dim sum that my father used to fetch from the local chippie. And here are two more that I still can’t live without. Vegemite, naturally. Growing up in Australia means growing up on this addictive savory spread, made from yeast extract and packed full of B vitamins. Vegemite was developed almost 100 years ago in Melbourne (yay!), by a very clever man named Cyril Callister. And for those of you who have never tried it, or tried it but didn’t like it, here’s some advice. Spread it thinly and evenly on your well-buttered toast, not too much now. Add some cheese, avocado or even a fried egg, and you’ll be feeling like a happy little vegemite, bright as can be. BBQ Shapes. These cute hexagonal shaped crackers were also created in my home state of Victoria, all the way back in 1950. As a child, we only had one flavour option available – BBQ. But times have changed, even for this humble snack. The shapes now come in 16 different flavours, and over 53 millions boxes are sold annually. Yum. Wishing you a delicious day full of your favourite foods! xx ✤
