All About Art

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
– Pablo Picasso

Summer in Bahrain has a way about it that makes us slow down, ponder and reflect – much like art, in my opinion. So, this month we're making it all about art! Our little island, small as it may be, has plenty of art and artists to discover, as you'll see in our cover story, which takes you on a journey exploring Bahrain's must-visit art galleries. We also sit down with acclaimed local artist Jamal Abdul Rahim, who reflects on a lifetime devoted to creativity. There's no shortage of things to look forward to this month. Culture vultures can head to our Listen Up pages for a ladies-only painting session at The Artsy Space Bahrain, explore Al Riwaq Art Space's latest residency exhibition or visit the Almasyaf Summer Art Show. Sports fans, meanwhile, can enjoy all the excitement of the FIFA World Cup at fan zones across the Kingdom, including the finals at the T4 Fanzone at Terminal 4 by Beyon, while Sports City 26 arrives at Exhibition World Bahrain with six weeks of activities. There's also the debut Bahrain Card Show for collectors and, for families, the return of the Bahrain Summer Toy Festival. And if you're still wondering how to keep the kids occupied over the holidays, don't miss our guide to some of the island's best summer camps.

In motoring, we put the stylish Audi Q3 40 TFSI Sportback S line through its paces, while our dining pages take us from contemporary Japanese cuisine at Sumosan and the elegant surroundings of Sash Café to an authentic taste of Italy at EATALY. We also catch up with Chef Amer Alhawaj, Culinary Director at Legacy, to hear about his journey through some of the world's leading kitchens. Elsewhere, Mohamed Al Kayed, COO and Board Member of Sevens Holding, shares his thoughts on the Kingdom's hospitality industry.

Travel stays close to home as we check into The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa for a staycation before looking further afield with four trending destinations for 2026 to inspire your next getaway.

And, as always, we keep you in the know with the latest in fashion, beauty, tech and entertainment.

Enjoy the read and hope this summer inspires your creativity!

Bye for now...

“This year’s edition features new attractions, entertainment and memorable experiences for families of all ages,” said Sarah Ahmed Buhejji, BTEA CEO. “The festival forms part of our ongoing efforts to enrich Bahrain’s tourism offering and provide diverse experiences for citizens, residents and visitors from across the GCC, while contributing to increased tourism activity during the summer season.

“The Bahrain Summer Toy Festival has become one of the Kingdom’s leading family events, further strengthening Bahrain’s position as a premier family entertainment destination in the region

and enhancing the range of experiences available to visitors.”

AN AFTERNOON OF ART

Swap your usual routine for a paintbrush this July as The Artsy Space Bahrain hosts a ladies-only acrylic painting session inspired by the beauty of blooming red poppies.

Taking place on July 10 in the charming surroundings of The Secret Garden in Mahooz, the session offers more than just an afternoon of painting. NEW ART RESIDENCY EXHIBITION OPENS

Al Riwaq Art Space presents the work of seven artists from its sixth Application residency programme, inviting visitors to reflect on memory, emotion and the traces that experiences leave behind.

Al Riwaq Art Space recently opened Residual Spaces, an exhibition featuring the artists of Application 006, the sixth edition of its art residency programme. The exhibition, running until July 23, brings together Ghalia Abdul Jawad, Mahmood Alsharqawi (Huvil), Maram Al Suliman, Mariam Al Noaimi, Sarah M. Redha, Samar Aleskafi and Yusuf Qambar. Developed over several months, the exhibition invites audiences to consider what remains after experience and how traces of memory, emotion and social encounters continue to influence our understanding of ourselves and the spaces we inhabit.

Through processes of reflection, observation and recollection, the participating artists have examined the ways in which memory settles, resurfaces and reverberates through time. Their practices explore the echoes of lived experience and the subtle ways in which moments, encounters and emotions continue to shape our understanding of the present. The exhibition unfolds through a range of visual languages, with works spanning installations, minimalist interventions, abstract compositions and theatrical environments.

While each artist approaches the theme from a distinct perspective, every work is rooted in personal enquiry and emotional resonance. Together, they form a series of interconnected narratives that reveal how memories and experiences continue to inhabit spaces long after the moments themselves have passed.

Residual Spaces encourages visitors to engage with the artworks on both an intellectual and emotional level, navigating between individual and collective narratives. The exhibit presents these residual spaces as places of reflection and negotiation, where memory is understood not as a static record of the past but as an active and evolving presence. Through this engagement, the artworks offer several points of entry for interpreting what remains, revealing residue not simply as a remnant of what has been but as a force that continually shapes our relationship to the present. ✤

BAHRAIN WELCOMES AWARD-WINNING RESTAURANT

One of Dubai's renowned dining concepts, Ninive, has made its debut in the Kingdom at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, introducing its signature take on Middle Eastern hospitality.

Ninive, the celebrated cultural dining concept founded by Paris Society, has officially opened its doors at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. The launch marks the first time the acclaimed concept has been brought to the island, introducing a destination centred on culture, hospitality and gathering within one of Bahrain's best-known luxury resorts.

More than a restaurant, Ninive Bahrain is described as a refined gathering place that brings the heritage of the Middle East and North Africa to life. Its name references Nineveh, one of the great cities of the ancient world and where some believe the Hanging Gardens of Babylon may have flourished, while the concept is imagined as a contemporary majlis where conversation, hospitality and the rhythm of the evening take precedence over formality.

For Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain, the opening is an important addition to the property's culinary offering and its commitment to delivering exceptional lifestyle and dining experiences.

“We are delighted to welcome Ninive to Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain and to begin this exciting new chapter for the property,” said Yazan Latif, General Manager of Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. “As a brand deeply rooted in culture, storytelling and meaningful connections, Ninive complements our vision of creating extraordinary

experiences for our guests and the local community.”

The interiors, designed by Pirajean Lees, take inspiration from Mesopotamian mythology and Bedouin architecture. Timeworn wood, antique brass, Zellige tiles, handcrafted detailing and cuneiform-inspired motifs come together to create a space that feels intimate and layered, while interpreting regional influences through a contemporary lens.

The kitchen presents a fully à la carte menu inspired by the culinary traditions of the Middle East, the Levant and North Africa, reviving and reinterpreting dishes that have long been central to the Arab kitchen. The beverage programme draws on the sensory richness of the Arabic souq, incorporating ingredients including saffron, tamarind, dried lime, rose, dates and cardamom woven throughout the cocktail menu.

The Bahrain opening follows the success of Ninive's Dubai debut in 2017 where the restaurant earnt Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition amongst other accolades, Ninive Bab Al Shams in 2023 and Ninive Beach at J1 Beach in 2024. ✤

BAHRAIN'S MUST-VISIT ART GALLERIES

From artist-run studios and independent art spaces to world-class collections and established institutions, Bahrain's galleries are far more than places to admire paintings. They preserve history, support emerging talent and introduce visitors to new ideas. Whether you're an avid collector or simply an art lover, here's our guide to some of the island's most inspiring art galleries.

ABBAS ALMOSAWI ART GALLERY

Abbas Almosawi Art Gallery offers visitors a chance to explore the work and artistic legacy of one of Bahrain’s most renowned artists, Abbas Saleh Almosawi. Born in 1952, he has been painting Bahrain for over four decades – its old souqs, traditional villages and architectural heritage, creating works that bridge the island's past and present.

Located in Al Qurayyah in Janabiya, the contemporary gallery features a mix of figurative, abstract and mixed-media pieces, with recurring themes of identity, memory, peace and the transformation of Bahrain's landscape and society.

Beyond exhibiting artwork, the gallery also serves as a platform that encourages artistic dialogue, cultural preservation and community engagement. Visitors can also learn more about Abbas Almosawi’s Art & Peace Project, established in 1991, which has brought together artists, children and communities across Bahrain and around the world in international peace initiatives. Although no summer exhibitions are currently scheduled, visitors can still enjoy the gallery's permanent collection and keep a look out for future programmes and exhibitions to be announced. GO: FOLLOW @ABBASALMOSAWIART ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

“Galleries are where an art scene grows up. For more than 25 years, our role at Albareh has been to give Bahraini and Arab artists a serious platform, to connect them with collectors and institutions, and to keep the conversation between cultures alive. Bahrain's emerging artists don't lack talent; they need spaces that believe in them, and that is the work we are proud to do.” – Hayfa Aljishi, Founder

“Art galleries are essential cultural spaces that preserve heritage, encourage creativity and connect artists with the wider community. As Bahrain's art scene continues to grow, galleries play a vital role in fostering dialogue, inspiration and cultural exchange.” – Reji Joy, Curator

ALBAREH ART SPACE

Founded in 1998 by Bahraini art patron Hayfa Aljishi, Albareh Art Space in Adliya has established itself as one of the Gulf’s pioneering platforms for modern and contemporary Middle Eastern art. The gallery has played an important role over the past 25 years in introducing regional artists to international audiences, with many going on to have works acquired by museums and record auction results.

Albareh showcases a wide variety of artistic practices, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, mixed media, installations, conceptual works and calligraphy. Its exhibitions have featured many acclaimed names, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum's Jameel Prize winner Mehdi Moutashar; Shadi Ghadirian, whose photography sits in the British Museum, the Centre Pompidou and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Serwan Baran, who represented Iraq at the 2019 Venice Biennale; and Camille Zakharia, whose photography formed part of Bahrain's Golden Lion-winning pavilion at the 2010 Venice Biennale.

The space also runs two in-house art studios and an active calendar of workshops, artist talks, screenings, lectures and group discussions. Through its educational arm, Sikkat Albareh, visitors can participate in hands-on creative sessions across many artistic disciplines, including ceramics, mosaics, weaving and jewellery making, led by practising artists.

BUSAAD ART GALLERY

There's something special about visiting an artist's gallery when the building itself is part of the story. Busaad Art Gallery occupies the house where renowned Bahraini artist Ebrahim Mohamed Busaad was born in 1954. Originally owned by his grandfather, the traditional home was built in the 1930s and carefully restored, preserving its original architectural character. Founded in 2014 by the artist himself, Zubaida Al Hashimi and Hamad Busaad (who is also curator, along with Wasan Busaad), the gallery is dedicated exclusively to Ebrahim's artistic legacy, serving as a permanent museum charting a career that spans more than five decades. Guided by the motto With Art We Excel, the gallery is a non-commercial, non-profit cultural initiative, with all artworks exhibited intended solely for public viewing and cultural enrichment.

Visitors can view a varied collection of oil, acrylic and charcoal paintings, alongside Arabic calligraphy, etching and silkscreen printmaking works, reflecting the breadth of the artist’s creative practice. To keep the experience fresh, the displayed collection is regularly updated, with artworks rotated every three to four months.

GO: FOLLOW @BUSAADARTGALLERY ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

AL RIWAQ ART SPACE

Al Riwaq Art Space has grown from a small independent gallery that opened in 1998 into one of Bahrain’s leading contemporary art institutions today. Located in Gufool, the non-profit art and design hub has spent more than two decades supporting artists, encouraging creative exchange and helping shape the Kingdom’s modern art scene.

Under the leadership of Founder and Director Bayan Kanoo, Al Riwaq has built a reputation for presenting thought-provoking exhibitions and community-driven initiatives that connect artists and audiences. The space showcases a wide range of contemporary practices, including painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, installation art and video works, while also embracing experimental and interdisciplinary projects.

The space regularly works with local, regional and international artists, making it a dynamic meeting point for creative voices from different backgrounds and disciplines.

This summer, Al Riwaq is preparing a new open-call exhibition scheduled for August 4, inviting artists from around the world to submit their work. Additional collaborations, exhibitions and community-focussed programmes are also planned, ensuring there is plenty for art enthusiasts to look forward to in the months ahead.

“Art and culture represent a cumulative process that contributes to the development of cultural awareness and aesthetic appreciation. Therefore, careful consideration should be given to selecting works that demonstrate both intellectual depth and technical excellence, as such qualities play a vital role in fostering meaningful engagement and enriching the audience’s cultural experience.” –Ebrahim Busaad, Artist

LA FONTAINE CENTRE OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Part gallery, part cultural landmark, La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art has held a unique place in Bahrain's arts scene since opening in 2002. A short walk from Manama's historic souq, the centre is housed within a beautifully restored 19th-century building belonging to the Alireza family. Combining traditional GulfIslamic architecture with the elegance of a European château, the historic landmark, dating back 150 years, has since transformed into a destination dedicated to art, culture and leisure.

Built around a central courtyard and surrounded by a series of interconnected rooms, the former residence offers a fitting home for a gallery, where regularly rotating exhibitions have introduced audiences to contemporary artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, design and multimedia art.

Over the years, La Fontaine has hosted works by many regional and international artists, including multimedia artwork by Jean Marc Sinan (2002), Dream Tracks by Aboriginal artist Irenie Ngalinba (2006), Life Journey by Iranian painter Fereshta Shishine (2018) and more recent contributions such as Beyond the Veil by Spanish artist Iris Morata (2025). Keep a look out for future exhibitions planned from October onwards.

Much more than an exhibition space, the complex hosts cultural events, film screenings and lectures, providing a platform for intellectual dialogue and artistic exchange. It also houses a finedining restaurant, a spa, an open-air amphitheatre and a private museum, making it one of Bahrain's most distinctive venues.

“Independent art spaces play an essential role in creating opportunities for artists and audiences to meet, experiment and engage in meaningful cultural dialogue. As Bahrain’s cultural landscape continues to grow, galleries and independent initiatives help nurture creative talent while strengthening the connection between art and society.” –Ali Kadhem Al Bazzaz, Founder

MASHQ ART SPACE

Founded in 2015 by Bahraini artist and cultural practitioner Ali Kadhem Al Bazzaz, Mashq Art Space is an independent hub dedicated to creativity, dialogue and community engagement through the arts. Relocated to its current premises in Argan Village, the space has become a meeting point for artists, writers, musicians and cultural practitioners.

The space showcases a broad range of artistic practices, including painting, drawing, printmaking, Arabic calligraphy, photography, mixed media, installation art and contemporary visual arts.

Over the years, Mashq has welcomed both emerging and established Bahraini artists, while also providing opportunities for regional and international participants through collaborative exhibitions, residency-related projects and cultural partnerships. This summer, the space is running a children's art programme alongside workshops in painting, drawing, printmaking and visual arts. Community art initiatives, artist talks and gatherings are also planned through the season.

RAK ART FOUNDATION

Set within a beautifully restored 1920s Bahraini home in Riffa, RAK Art Foundation brings together heritage architecture and an impressive collection of contemporary art. Once the childhood residence of Founder Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, the building retains many of its original features, with preserved walls, colonnades and historic gypsum details creating a striking backdrop for the artworks on display.

The foundation’s world-class collection juxtaposes local and international perspectives, presenting paintings, sculptures and installations that create a borderless visual dialogue. GOLDEN NIGHTS AT LAROCCA

An unforgettable expression of summer.

STYLE MEETS COMFORT

fact took the Q3 40 TFSI Sportback S line for a spin to discover how Audi blends dynamic design, polished performance and modern luxury in compact form.

The Audi Q3 40 TFSI Sportback S line arrived looking polished, poised and pleased with itself. After inspecting and driving it, we understood why. This was not simply a compact SUV with a sloping roofline; it felt like Audi had taken a practical everyday companion and sent it for a styling appointment. To us, the appeal was immediate. The Q3 Sportback offered premium design, confident performance and genuine usability in a package compact enough for city life yet perfectly suited for dressed-up evenings out.

Athletic Elegance

From the outside, the Q3 Sportback S line had an athletic presence. Its coupé-inspired roofline sat 29mm lower than the SUV version, giving it a sleeker profile while preserving the stance and visibility expected from a compact SUV. The proportions worked well, with strong shoulders, clean surfacing and a wide Audi Singleframe grille.

The S line exterior added sharper bumpers and a full paint finish, while the 19-inch Audi Sport wheels in gloss black brought a sportier edge. Red brake callipers added just enough theatre to hint that the Q3 Sportback had a more playful side waiting beneath its carefully tailored exterior. The digital Matrix LED headlights gave the front a crisp expression, while the illuminated Audi rings at the rear added an after-dark signature.

Crafted For Comfort

Inside, the Q3 Sportback felt calm, contemporary and thoughtfully arranged. Audi’s clean cabin layout created an immediate sense of space, helped by the removal of the traditional centre-console gear selector. Instead, gear selection moved to the steering column, freeing up space for storage, cup holders and a neater design. The black sport seats in leather and artificial leather offered superb support, with electric adjustment and four-way lumbar support helping us settle in quickly. Front seat heating and threezone deluxe automatic air conditioning added comfort, while the panoramic sunroof lifted the atmosphere.

The ambient lighting package plus allowed the cabin mood to be personalised, which we enjoyed far more than we should have. Choosing from 30 colours felt less like adjusting a setting and more like curating the mood for the evening. Relaxed and understated? Quietly glamorous? Mildly late but still fabulous? Useful rear seating and luggage space also reminded us that this remained a proper everyday SUV.

Tech With Taste

Technology was one of the Q3’s strongest areas. The Audi virtual cockpit plus and the 12.8-inch MMI touch display combined to create a sleek, driver-focussed digital stage. The interface felt logical and sharp, while the MMI experience plus and navigation helped make the system feel premium. Smartphone interface, USB charging ports in both rows and the inductive phone compartment made daily connectivity easy. The SONOS premium sound system delivered rich audio through 12 speakers and 420 watts of power, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a private concert.

The head-up display, digital Matrix LED lighting and projection lights in the exterior mirrors added to the high-tech feel.

Performance With Polish

The Q3 40 TFSI Sportback S line uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine producing 204hp, paired with quattro all-wheel drive. On the road, that meant smooth, confident performance with enough urgency to make overtaking feel easy.

The seven-speed S tronic gearbox shifted cleanly, while quattro traction gave the car a reassuring sense of grip. It felt suited to Middle Eastern driving, where city traffic, fast highways and sudden lane changes can all come up in the same afternoon. The suspension with damper control balanced comfort with agility. In everyday driving, the Q3 felt refined and settled. When the pace increased, progressive steering and Audi drive select helped it feel more alert. It was sporty enough to entertain, yet civilised enough not to make coffee on the go feel like a risky decision.

“The Q3 Sportback offered premium design, confident performance and genuine usability in a package compact enough for city life yet perfectly suited for dressed-up evenings out.”

Sophisticated Support

The Q3 Sportback S line came generously equipped with driver assistance and safety systems. Adaptive cruise control, adaptive cruise assist plus with emergency assist, front emergency brake assist, side assist with exit warning and rear cross-traffic assist all contributed to a reassuring drive.

Parking was made easier with Park Assist Plus, a 360-degree display, and trained parking and surround-view cameras. In busy urban spaces, this was welcome. The car seemed capable of handling situations that could have otherwise resulted in a carefully rehearsed explanation to the dealership.

Driver attention and fatigue monitoring, proactive occupant protection, multiple airbags and hill hold assist further strengthened the safety package.

Closing Impressions

By the time we handed the key fob back, the Q3 Sportback S line had made an impressively convincing case for itself. It looked sharp, felt refined, drove with confidence and offered technology and comfort that make everyday life easier. Stylish without being impractical and sporty without sacrificing refinement, it was the kind of car that settled easily into daily life while still making ordinary journeys feel a little more special. ✤

CALLS SO CLEAR THEY EARNT A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

soundcore's new Liberty 5 Pro and Liberty 5 Pro Max earbuds have been built for the noisy reality of everyday life with record-breaking sound quality.

Anker Innovations' premium audio and video brand launched the products which are the first powered by the company’s new THUS AI Chip, a custom processor that handles all the AI work directly on the earbuds.

Since internet is not needed, calls stay clear, noise cancellation stays smart and voice commands respond almost instantly.

A 10-sensor system with eight microphones tracks the noise around you, while two bone conduction sensors pick up the vibration of your voice through your skull, all processed in real time by the THUS AI Chip, which separates your voice from everything else.

The Liberty 5 Pro has the credentials to back it up: a Guinness World Record for the highest speech quality score ever achieved by TWS earbuds. The Liberty 5 Pro Max uses the same earbud hardware and delivers identical performance.

Next to world-class calls, the Liberty 5 Pro Max packs a trick no other earbud has. No phone. No app. In meetings, a double-tap on the back of the charging case starts recording. The 1.78-inch AMOLED screen confirms it's working. When your meeting ends, the soundcore app generates a transcript, identifies who spoke and pulls out the action items.

The Liberty 5 Pro keeps things simpler: a 0.96-inch TFT touchscreen

for music, ANC modes and call handling, without the AI Note-Taker. Both models also support translation, through the earbuds on the Liberty 5 Pro, and through either the case screen or earbuds on the Liberty 5 Pro Max. ✤

CREATING VALUE IN BUSINESS

With a background in finance and many successful hospitality, food and beverage (F&B) and real estate brand launches under his belt, Mohamed Al Kayed, COO and Board Member of Sevens Holding, brings his business acumen to advancing the company’s portfolio. He talks about the industry’s resilience under uncertain times, untapped growth potentials and Sevens Holding’s upcoming projects.

Sevens Holding has become a familiar name in Bahrain's hospitality scene. Can you tell us about your role and the group's operations?

As COO and Board Member of Sevens Holding, my role involves overseeing the group’s strategic growth, operations and the development of our hospitality and entertainment portfolio. We are passionate about creating concepts that offer memorable experiences and contribute to Bahrain’s vibrant tourism and lifestyle sectors. Our focus has always been on quality, innovation and delivering world-class standards while remaining true to the Kingdom’s culture and hospitality.

Bahrain's hospitality sector has faced a number of challenges due to recent regional tensions. What do you believe has been the key factor behind the industry's resilience?

Bahrain’s hospitality and F&B industry has once again demonstrated its resilience. One of the biggest reasons behind this is the Kingdom’s strong fundamentals, the adaptability of businesses and the unwavering confidence of both investors and consumers. Equally important has been the visionary leadership of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, whose commitment to

economic growth and private sector development has created an environment where businesses can continue to thrive despite regional challenges.

During this period of uncertainty, Sevens Holding successfully launched Royal Marrakech restaurant. What gave you the confidence to move forward with the project at that time?

Confidence comes from having conviction in the market and believing in the long-term outlook of Bahrain. The launch of Royal Marrakech was a bold move, but one that reflected the vision and confidence of our Chairman and CEO, His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Rashid Al Khalifa. We believed that exceptional concepts will always find their audience, and I am proud to say that the response has exceeded expectations. It is a testament to the strength of Bahrain’s hospitality market and the importance of taking a long-term view.

Does Sevens Holding have any expansion plans or new projects in the pipeline?

Absolutely. We are very excited about the future and remain committed to investing in Bahrain’s hospitality and tourism sectors. We have several exciting projects in the pipeline, including

Mayur, a premium Indian dining experience, as well as Bling Bling, a dynamic addition to Bahrain’s nightlife and entertainment scene. In addition, we are working on a new hotel project which we believe will further contribute to Bahrain’s growing appeal as a regional destination for tourism and lifestyle experiences.

Looking at Bahrain's hospitality landscape, what opportunities do you believe remain untapped, and where do you see the greatest growth potential?

I believe there are tremendous opportunities in experiential dining, lifestyle-driven concepts, premium nightlife and lifestyle hotels. Today’s consumers are seeking much more than just accommodation or dining; they are looking for memorable experiences and destinations that combine hospitality, entertainment, culture and wellness.

You've built a successful career in a fast-paced industry. What leadership lessons have been most valuable throughout your journey?

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learnt is that leadership is

about people. Success is built on trust, consistency, humility and surrounding yourself with talented individuals. I’ve also learnt that difficult periods often create the greatest opportunities.

You wear many hats as a COO, Board Member and entrepreneur. How do you balance the demands of these different roles?

At the end of the day, all these roles share one common purpose: creating value and building sustainable businesses. Balance comes from having the right teams, empowering people and focussing on priorities.

Who has had the biggest influence on the person and leader you've become today?

Without question, the person who has had the greatest influence on me is our Chairman and CEO, His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Rashid Al Khalifa. His vision, confidence and ability to look beyond short-term challenges have taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, resilience and strategic thinking. ✤

COOKING FOR THE SOUL

Graduating from solving equations and working in some of the top restaurants in the world to season nine of MBC’s Top Chef, Amer Alhawaj, Culinary Director at Legacy, knows no bounds. He shares his culinary journey, lessons learnt along the way and his one big obsession.

You went from studying engineering to working in Michelinstarred kitchens. Looking back, what was the moment you realised cooking was your true calling?

I’ve always known, deep down, that I was going to become a chef. The only reason I pursued engineering was because my parents genuinely believed it was the right path for me – stable, sensible, secure. But no lecture hall or formula ever made me feel as alive as I did standing beside my grandmother in her kitchen as a kid. The smell of garlic hitting hot oil, the way she’d taste and adjust without measuring a thing – that was my real education. Engineering was what I did for my parents. Cooking was what I did for my soul.

You've had both early failure and major success in your career. How did the experience of opening – and losing – your first restaurant shape the chef and leader you are today? Losing my first real project, the first thing I poured everything into, was absolutely heartbreaking. I’ll never forget that gut-punch feeling of watching it fall apart. But looking back, that failure didn’t break me; it forged me. It made me tougher, more stubborn, more determined to push harder. More importantly, it forced me to ask the hard question: What did I do wrong? I sat with that question until I found honest answers. And I learnt. I really learnt. Sometimes the best teacher is a beautiful disaster.

What is your favourite dish to cook for friends, and what makes it special?

I’ve always been obsessed with making pasta from scratch. There’s something almost meditative about it – the rhythm of kneading, the silkiness of the dough under your palms, the patience it demands. It’s therapeutic, yes, but also deeply satisfying in a way that’s hard to explain until you’ve tasted your own hand-rolled noodles. If I had to pick one favourite to make, it would be Napoli pasta. Simple, soulful and absolutely delicious. To me, that’s perfection.

Which signature dish at Legacy best represents your culinary style, and why?

The Mushroom and Truffle Agnolotti isn't just a dish on the menu; it’s the accumulation of who I am as a chef and what I bring to the table. Every fold of that pasta, every layer of earthy mushroom and aromatic truffle, tells a part of my story. But more than that, it holds a very deep, personal, sentimental meaning for me. I don’t put it on the plate lightly. It carries memories, losses and quiet victories. When someone takes a bite of that agnolotti, they’re tasting a piece of my heart. ✤

MODERN JAPANESE CUISINE AT ITS BEST

Offering a contemporary dining experience, Sumosan brings together finesse, creativity and ambience. Fernanda Langhammer enjoyed a memorable meal of bold flavours and exquisite presentation in a refined setting.

Japanese cuisine is undoubtedly one of my top three culinary favourites. Any dining outing eventually leads me to a restaurant that offers this kind of fare and, when there’s a contemporary twist to the menu, it’s even better. That’s precisely what Sumosan delivers. Inspired by traditional Japanese cuisine, the restaurant embraces its core principles: a deep respect for premium ingredients, an emphasis on natural flavours and meticulous attention to visual presentation but adds its own touch to every dish.

Located at Address Beach Resort Bahrain in the ever-buzzing Marassi area, Sumosan is far more than just an internationally recognised name. From its flagship in London to its strong presence across the Middle East, the brand has built a reputation that extends well beyond its origins.

The restaurant welcomes guests with warmth and effortless sophistication, balancing contemporary design with a cosy, relaxed ambience. By day and in the early evening hours, it serves as an ideal destination for families, while later in the night it transforms into a more atmospheric setting – perfect for a date night or drinks with friends. A separate lounge area further elevates the experience, adding another layer of appeal to the venue. As the evening unfolds, the music deepens, the lighting softens and time seems to drift pleasantly out of focus. I was there to witness this vibe transformation and by the time we left, Sumosan was bubbling with busy tables and smiling crowds. The décor blends natural textures with understated elegance, featuring wooden wall panels and tables paired with comfortable sage-green seating, creating a warm, organic atmosphere. Lush potted plants further soften the space, adding to its tranquil charm. For me, the standout design elements were the umbrellainspired chandeliers and the open kitchen concept. Watching the culinary team in action adds a dynamic touch to the dining experience, yet impressively, the dining area remains completely free of lingering cooking aromas – a definite plus.

Santiago, the restaurant’s General Manager, welcomed us warmly, guiding us through each dish and embodying the attentive yet distinctive service that defines the restaurant’s character.

Once we had settled into our seats, the dishes began to arrive. It quickly became clear that presentation is taken very seriously; each plate first captivated the eyes before revealing the depth and balance of its flavours. The King Crab Salad immediately set the tone for the evening. Elegantly presented in a large bowl of ice, the delicate pieces of crab meat, enveloped in a rich and succulent sauce, rested atop a section of crab shell. Crisp lettuce was served separately, allowing us to combine the elements ourselves. Once paired, the contrasting textures came alive on the palate, delivering a beautifully balanced bite that was simultaneously crispy, creamy and tender. It was an unforgettable start to the meal and, if ranking the dishes were that simple, perhaps the standout plate of the evening.

The Ceviche Trio arrived at the table as a celebration of variety and its greatest appeal lies in the fact that there is no need to choose between salmon, tuna or seabass – you get to experience all three. The salmon was silky and delicate, bathed in a luscious passion fruit and mango sauce that added a subtle sweetness. The tuna embraced tradition with a classic leche de tigre

marinade, while the seabass delivered a gentle kick through its vibrant jalapeño salsa verde. Finished with touches of red onion and chilli, each bite was bright, balanced and full of character.

To momentarily step away from the seafood selection, we ordered the dish that had caught our attention the instant we opened the menu: the Bone Marrow Beef Tartare. Finely diced beef tenderloin was dressed in a flavourful tartare sauce with notes of mustard, complemented by wasabi and a hint of umeboshi, the Japanese pickled plum. Served atop a halved bone with its exposed marrow, the presentation was as striking as the flavours themselves. Mixing the rich, gelatinous bone marrow into the tartare added both depth and theatre to the experience, making each bite indulgent and bold.

But how can you visit a Japanese restaurant and not indulge in sushi and sashimi? Naturally, we opted for a mixed selection.

The Spicy Tuna roll, prepared with premium Bluefin tuna, was coated in tobiko, adding tiny bursts of flavour and texture with every bite. My personal favourite, however, was the Spicy Unagi & Shrimp Tempura roll. Perfectly balanced, it combined crisp shrimp tempura and refreshing cucumber wrapped in rice, then crowned with rich, umami-packed eel, a luscious sauce and crunchy toppings that brought everything together beautifully. The nigiri and sashimi stood out for the quality of the fish and the Ebi sashimi stole the show for its stunning texture and delicate flavour – it created a wow effect on the table.

Moving to the mains, we tried the Grilled Lamb Chops (Santiago was adamant that we had them; according to him, they’re the best on the island) and the Grilled Black Cod. The lamb chops get a Japanese twist with yakiniku sauce (a savoury, sweet and tangy Japanese dipping sauce specifically for grilled meat) and sesame

seeds. If there was a surprising dish, this was the one – tender and robustly flavoured, with a caramelised, golden-brown crust, easily among the most memorable lamb chops we’ve had. The black cod, on the other hand, was a study in refinement. Glazed with miso and cooked to perfection, it delivered an ultra-rich, buttery texture that was both silky and delicate. Each bite melted on the palate exactly as a perfectly executed cod should.

The grand finale arrived in the form of a pavlova, and once again, the presentation did not disappoint. A delicate meringue dome concealed its vibrant core: passion fruit jelly, mango served in two ways – both fresh pieces and sorbet – and a scattering of crunchy crumbs for added texture. The sweetness of the meringue was beautifully offset by the sharp, tangy brightness of the passion fruit, creating a harmonious concert of contrasts that lingered on the palate. We were also served two expertly crafted drinks throughout the meal.

Overall, the experience at Sumosan strikes a careful balance between precision, creativity and atmosphere. From the thoughtful execution of each dish to the seamless service and evolving ambience, it’s a place that feels equally suited to relaxed weekend lunches, lively dinners and more intimate evening occasions. It’s not just a meal that stands out, but the way everything comes together – flavours, presentation and energy – in a way that leaves a lasting impression long after you’ve left the table. ✤

A TABLE WORTH THE JOURNEY

Amira Ragab enjoyed Sash Café on a slow afternoon and didn't regret a single second of it. A journey to the far side of the island reveals a masterclass in neoclassical elegance and culinary ambition that is well worth the drive.

Commuting to the far side of the island is not always what I do – I am, by preference, a creature of habit and most at home in my own neighbourhood. When the chance to visit Riffa as a passenger princess came calling, saying no was simply never an option – particularly with Sash Café on the agenda, a name that had been on everyone's lips for all the right reasons: the food, the atmosphere and that effortlessly polished service. We began, rather gloriously, with a transgression: a dish borrowed from the breakfast menu, which runs until two o'clock, and therefore requires no apology whatsoever. The Trio of Bruschetta arrived as three distinct compositions on toasted bread, each making its own quiet argument. The grilled halloumi with pesto was charming, the balsamic avocado, composed. But it was the bruschetta crowned with pepperonata and feta that stopped conversation entirely –the sweet, slow-cooked peppers yielding against the salt of the cheese in a combination so straightforward and so right that one wonders why it isn't on every menu in the Gulf. From the appetisers, the Signature Black & White Nachos delivered exactly what great sharing food should: a perfectly calibrated crunch, grilled chicken treated with evident respect, Pico de Gallo with enough acidity to cut through the richness of the Monterey Jack cheese and guacamole that tasted as though it had been made moments before reaching the table. Addictive in the most unapologetic sense.

As a truffle devotee, I had already decided on the Mushroom & Cheese Flatbread even before the menu had fully been set down. It was, indeed, the dish I found myself blabbering about on the drive home – a sour cream base enriched with cheese and sweet onions, generously piled with wild mushrooms and finished with a whisper of truffle that managed to be present without being showy. It is the kind of thing that quietly ruins you for lesser versions. I will be returning for this alone. Between courses, we paused to properly take in the room – and the room, it must be said, rewards the attention. Sash is the sort of place that makes you want to linger considerably longer than planned: a space that layers European neoclassical grandeur with quietly clever contemporary touches, all executed with genuine conviction. Louis XV bergère armchairs in champagne gold flank sculptural brass coffee tables of an almost liquid, free-form quality, while deeply tufted, plum Chesterfields and a bold black-and-white marble chequerboard floor give the space a pleasing tension between the classical and the bold. Overhead, elaborate plasterwork ceiling roses frame cascading crystal chandeliers, casting everything in warm, honeyed light. The masterstroke, however, is a wall-mounted baroque shadow box, housing a curated assembly of porcelain birds – an unexpectedly poetic detail in a place that could so easily have settled for mere opulence. It hasn't.

Back to the food. The Honey Mustard Chicken Salad arrived with the quiet confidence of something that knows it has nothing to prove – grilled chicken, heirloom tomatoes, toasted almonds, peppery arugula and baby spinach, all brought together by Sash's own honey mustard dressing. Refreshing, substantial and brilliant. A full meal on a plate – as a salad should always aspire to be but so rarely is. My companion, drawn towards something with a little more street-food spirit, chose the Chef's Sliders –

homemade beef patties in brioche buns with cheddar, tomato chutney and peppercorn mayo, served alongside fries. The verdict was delivered between bites rather than after: gourmet instincts, approachable execution, thoroughly satisfying.

The mains, when they arrived, were the sort that remind you why you dine out in the first place. The Signature Chicken & Wild Mushroom Risotto – creamy, generous, perfumed with garlic and thyme and finished with Parmesan – was a reliably beautiful classic; the sort of dish that earns its place on a menu by simply being exactly what it promises. The Chicken Piccata, however, was the table's unanimous favourite. Deeply savoury, pan-seared Parmesan-crusted chicken breast with a shatteringly crisp crust, served alongside slow-roasted crushed potatoes – yielding within, golden at the edges – and finished with a sweet sundried tomato glaze and butternut. It arrived looking like something between a painting and a promise, and delivered entirely on both. Throughout the meal, the drinks wove themselves into the experience with pleasing ease. The Mint Lemonade mocktail served as the palate's punctuation mark – bright, bracingly fresh, resetting us neatly between courses. The Watermelon Peach Iced Tea was a genuine revelation, a signature I had not encountered before and shall most certainly seek out again. The Strawberry Mojito arrived made to perfection, and the Rose Latte, ordered by my companion, garnered the sort of focussed, contented appreciation that speaks louder than any enthusiasm. No proper meal ends without dessert, and Sash obliges magnificently. The Sash Signature Skillet Cookie – warm, freshly baked, chocolate-chip-studded and crowned with vanilla ice cream – is the kind of pudding that produces an involuntary smile. The Biscoff Lotus Delight crêpe, with its Lotus biscuit crumbs, brown sugar and mascarpone, was elevated entirely by those crumbs – a textural masterstroke that transformed a good crêpe into a genuinely memorable one.

Sash Café knows precisely what it is, and is thoroughly, admirably unapologetic about it – in its interiors, its service and, most importantly, on the plate. The journey to Riffa, it turns out, was entirely worth it. It always is when the destination is this good. ✤

EAT THE ITALIAN WAY

Pack your bags and join Apple Sharma on a one-of-a-kind Italian culinary journey to EATALY in Marassi Galleria mall – where you eat, shop and learn – all under one roof!

You would be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't enjoy Italian cuisine, and Bahrain has no shortage of excellent Italian restaurants.

But if there's one global name that captures the true taste of Italy, it's EATALY. With more than 40 locations across Italy and around the world, it's no surprise the brand has landed in the Kingdom with the same three-pronged promise: eat, shop and learn, all in one place. Let’s talk about the food first! Standing for ‘Eating Italian’ (a fusion of Eat and Italy), the concept feels right at home at the classy Marassi Galleria mall. We sauntered in for an early lunch, just before midday, which conveniently meant we could try the breakfast dishes too. EATALY's rotating seasonal menus (the summer menu is currently in play) sit alongside its core breakfast and main offerings, and we made it our mission to sample a bit of everything, starting with a beautiful charcuterie and cheese board. The bresaola arrived as a study in quiet confidence – paper-thin slices of dry-cured beef that spoke directly to the Italian tradition they came from, deeply savoury with a balance of spice and richness that unfolded gradually. The salami, by contrast, made no apologies for its intensity: rich, meaty, with a smoky depth that lingered long after the last bite.

The cheese board was equally impressive. The 18-month-old pecorino was rich and nutty, but it was the pecorino with truffle that won me over – superbly savoury, with a bold, luxurious flavour

I'm still thinking about. Both sheep's milk cheeses sat in lovely contrast to the cow's milk cheese, Provolone Dolce, soft, buttery and slightly sweet. All accompanied with warm, freshly baked

sourdough, perfect for dunking in Italian extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I could happily eat this spread every single day. Throughout the meal, we were looked after by Ali and Umer –courteous, friendly and clearly knowledgeable. Umer walked us through every dish and had all the answers, whether it was about ingredients or preparation.

From the breakfast menu, the Avena al Caffè – espresso overnight oats topped with chocolate-coated coffee beans and a toasted cinnamon oat crunch – is a coffee lover's delight. As a coffee addict, I loved it, though it might be a tad strong for those who prefer their mornings gentler.

Next came the Gratinata alla Diavola – spicy baked eggs. The kitchen's 'nduja – a fiery, yielding paste of minced sausage, smoked paprika and sun-dried tomato – was the star here. Spooned over organic, locally sourced baked eggs in vibrant tomato sauce, it turned a seemingly modest breakfast plate into something far more arresting. The yolk, still trembling at its centre, broke softly into the sauce and onto a shard of crisp bread, bringing the whole dish together beautifully.

For those after something more classical, the Gratinata al Pomodoro – baked egg in tomato sauce – makes an equally compelling case. The sauce was bright and savoury, the eggs cooked with care, but it was the herby, verdant basil pesto that lifted the plate from satisfying to exceptional, cutting through the tomatoey richness with the assurance of an honest house-made preparation.

We also tried the Pizza Tasca Feta e Uova, a Mediterranean pizza pocket filled with egg and crumbled feta. The perfect breakfast dish – simple, fresh, delicious – with the fried egg playing

beautifully against the saltiness of the feta and the freshness of cucumber and tomato.

Before the summer menu arrived, we took a moment to look around, and it struck us how well the Italian flavours echoed the décor. The large, tastefully designed space houses the dining room alongside a retail and culinary school area (more on that later). Out front, counters tempt with gelato, pastries, coffee and pizza from a woodfire oven, leading through glass-partitioned kitchens to the dining room at the back. Terrazzo flooring, cognac-coloured leather banquettes, dark wood tables with woven-backed chairs, a coffered ceiling and globe pendant lights give it the feel of a contemporary Italian café-trattoria. A feature wall of colourful plates and travelposter prints celebrates Italian culture, while lush greenery and lively music put you at ease. The bright interior opens onto a terrace overlooking the waterfront and beach – and the Gelato Cart, serving mall passersby (also available for events), is a charming touch. Onto the summer menu, which opened with a trio of appetisers.

The Bruschetta con Burrata – toasted sourdough topped with marinated tomatoes, creamy burrata and fresh basil – was simple and light, pure Mediterranean freshness on a plate. The Arancini alla Nerano were golden and crisp outside, giving way to a soft, slightly zingy centre of lemon risotto with courgette, served over a vibrant, herbaceous zucchini sauce that tied the dish together. And the Parmigiana di Melanzane, layers of tender eggplant with tomato sauce, fior di latte cheese and basil oil, was a classic done right – comforting and genuinely delicious.

The pasta and pizza section is where things got serious. The Trofie Pesto al Tavolo arrived with Umer making sure it was perfectly al

dente, just as I like it (something very few places in Bahrain get right). The pesto itself was one of the best I've had in a long time – the basil bright and fresh, the pine nuts adding a nutty depth front and centre. The Risotto Mediterraneo, bright yellow and loaded with colourful Mediterranean vegetables, was summer on a plate. Creamy, indulgent and silky, with crispy fried onions on top for crunch, it didn't warrant much attention at first glance but stole the show after the first forkful. Everyone went back for seconds, then thirds, and it vanished from the table in minutes. Both the pasta and the risotto were, for me, the dishes of the day. On the side, the Broccolini alla Griglia – Josper-grilled, topped with roasted almonds and lemon zest – was cooked just right, slightly charred with a satisfying crunch and gentle nuttiness. Dessert, naturally, was never in doubt. The Cheesecake al Forno reminded me of a San Sebastian cheesecake gone Italian –that same silky, melt-in-the-mouth caramelised top, but with a crispy almond crumble base instead of the usual biscuit one. A small departure from tradition, but a delicious one. No Italian dessert experience is complete without the quintessential classic Tiramisu and for a non-alcoholic version, the Verrina Tiramisù is one of the best I’ve tried. The homemade mascarpone was flawlessly creamy, the savoiardi perfectly soaked and the bitter cocoa did it full justice.

EATALY also houses a curated retail market stocked with authentic Italian products, ingredients and gift hampers, while La Scuola di EATALY offers cooking classes for kids, adults and corporate groups, with a certificate from Head Chef Antonio on completion. For something more bespoke, the restaurant also caters for private and corporate events.

EATALY surpassed every expectation I walked in with – the authentic food, the warm service, the spectacular retail experience. It was, in every sense, an Eataly-an experience, and I'll be back for more. Grazie mille! ✤

OULU, FINLAND

Most people couldn't find Oulu on a map. That's about to change. This seaside city on Finland's northern coast is having a major moment as the European Capital of Culture 2026. The year-long programme spans more than 1,000 events, spilling into streets, forests, riverbanks and even neighbouring towns. Expect music festivals, Sámi exhibitions (indigenous culture), light installations, pop-up performances and public art routes like the Climate Clock trail. Food plays a big part too through the Arctic Food Lab, showcasing sustainable Nordic cuisine and local produce like foraged berries including fresh sea buckthorn and reindeer tartare.

When you are not soaking up the festive vibes, Oulu itself is compact and sociable, with a quirky spirit locals wear with pride – this is, after all, home to the annual Air Guitar World Championships! Rent a fatbike (the city is among Europe's most cycle-friendly) and start at Market Square, where waterfront cafés are buzzing and the historic Market Hall does excellent things with local fish. Look out for Toripolliisi, the beloved bronze policeman statue, then follow the colourful riverfront buildings to catch a ferry across to Pikisaari, a small wooden village that feels frozen in time. Outside the city, the wilderness awaits. Winter brings frozen coastlines, snow-covered forests and Northern Lights excursions. Summer brings near-endless daylight, midnight hikes, paddleboarding, island-hopping around the Oulu archipelago and long beach days at beautiful Nallikari. Sauna, of course, is a lifestyle here – and in

summer, you can float down the Oulu River on a steaming sauna raft, followed by a plunge into the refreshing water (or an ice hole in winter).

The ultimate Arctic reset, it’s easy to see why Oulu is finally getting the attention it deserves.

PELOPONNESE, GREECE

The Peloponnese is the Greece that Greeks recommend and tourists often overlook. A rugged peninsula dangling from the southern mainland, it delivers much of what people love about the country: ancient ruins, mountain villages, turquoise bays, fantastic food – almost entirely without the crowds. With more ancient history than almost anywhere else in Europe, this is where Olympia held its games nearly 3,000 years ago, where Mycenae's Lion Gate still stands and where the Byzantine city of Mystras cascades down a hillside above Sparta.

The Peloponnese has always had the ingredients, but what's changed recently is the infrastructure has finally caught up. Access has become easier, luxury hotels are appearing and a new 1,730-kilometre hiking network now links the mountains with the shoreline. Christopher Nolan shot parts of his upcoming film The Odyssey here too, and travellers are already tracing the production through sites like Nestor's Cave and the horseshoe-shaped Voidokilia Beach. Every pocket of the Peloponnese has its own personality. Messenia offers miles of pristine sandy beaches. Nafplio, often described as one of Greece's most beautiful towns, has colourful Venetian architecture and narrow picturesque

cobblestoned streets with cafés and artisan boutiques. Further south, the Mani Peninsula, known as the ‘Wild West’ of Greece, has a rugged, sun-baked landscape with fishing villages and hidden turquoise coves.

Then there's the food. Family tavernas serve grilled octopus, slow-cooked lamb, fresh pasta and salads drizzled with Kalamata olive oil that makes you question every bottle you've bought back home. Finish with diples –fried dough drenched in honey – and you'll start planning your next trip here before the plate is cleared.

QUY NHON, VIETNAM

For years, Quy Nhon was somewhere only long-haul backpackers stumbled upon by accident. Overshadowed by Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, this seaside town on Vietnam's south-central coast, with its pristine shores, Cham heritage and unspoilt feel, is now turning up on global travel hotlists – and for good reason.

The beaches alone justify the journey. Stealing the show is Ky Co, often called the Maldives of Vietnam, with its powdery sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters and cliffs that drop straight into the sea. Eo Gio (the Strait of the Winds) is beautiful with its towering rocky ridges and crashing waves, while the nearby islands are good for kayaking and snorkelling among coral reefs.

Inland, there's plenty to explore. History lovers can visit the centuries-old Banh It Cham Towers that sit atop green hills above the ocean. The laid-back village of Bai Xep is worth an early start to watch fishermen pull colourful boats onto

the shore each morning. And when hunger strikes, the city delivers and then some. Street food is what Quy Nhon does best, and Xuan Dieu Street is the place to go. Order bún chả cá, a local fish cake noodle soup, for breakfast, and don't leave without trying bánh xèo tôm nhảy, crispy rice pancakes filled with freshly caught shrimp. A growing number of well-designed eco-resorts and wellness retreats have arrived in recent years, but Quy Nhon remains refreshingly free of mass tourism.

BIG SKY, MONTANA

Sitting in a stretch between Yellowstone National Park and the spine of the Rockies, interest in this upscale Montana resort town has skyrocketed this year. Some call it the Yellowstone Effect, after the TV series that romanticised the American West. But Big Sky's appeal was earnt well before Kevin Costner showed up on a horse.

This is big country, in the literal sense. Mountains crowd the horizon, valleys stretch out wide and you start to feel pretty small pretty fast. Gallatin National Forest surrounds the town, and Yellowstone's geysers and waterfalls are close enough to visit before lunch. Millions visit the park each year and many choose to skip the camping experience and trade their tent for a proper bed and dinner in Big Sky instead. Winter is the main event, and the resort has more than 5,800 skiable acres, among the largest in North America. But once the snow melts, the skis go away and the hiking boots come out. Wildflowers take over the alpine trails, the Madison River fills with fly fishermen and the chairlifts start hauling mountain bikes instead. There's whitewater rafting if you want the adrenaline or a slow horse ride through open meadows if you don't. Elk, moose and bison turn up unexpectedly. Bears too, if you're lucky, or unlucky, depending how you look at it. And on clear nights, the sky, true to the name, is enormous, thick with stars – most only ever see in photographs.

For anyone chasing wilderness with a warm bed waiting at the end of it, Big Sky has become one of 2026's better bets. ✤

AN OASIS IN THE GULF

Combining classic Bahraini hospitality with modern luxury, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa is one of the island's most beloved addresses. Apple Sharma checks in for a midweek escape to discover what keeps guests coming back.

The Welcome

Very few properties on the island are as loved as the legendary Gulf Hotel Bahrain – one that has not only stood the test of time but has kept its unique charm, while so much around it has changed. Having lived on the island for many blissful years, I have many fond memories of the hotel and was excited to add to them as my partner and I prepared for a much-needed mid-week staycation. Located in the heart of Adliya, only minutes from Central Manama and 15 minutes from the airport, its convenient location makes it a great choice for both business and leisure. With rest and relaxation top of our list, we walked in, took the elevators to the grand lobby and, as happens every single time, I caught my breath a little. Glittering chandeliers, polished marble, classic wood panelling and a beautiful flower arrangement as a centrepiece – it's by far one of the most impressive five-star hotel lobbies on the island. Old-school luxury done right, with a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that always draws you in.

A warm greeting from the front office staff, a swift checkin and the handover of the keys, and our staycation had officially begun.

Room With A View

One of the largest properties in Bahrain, the hotel is home to 361 rooms and suites. Ours was a Deluxe King with a city view. The modestly sized room had all the trappings of a luxury five-star stay, with a large, comfy bed dressed in crisp white and the fluffiest pillows I've ever slept on –

promising dreamy nights and lazy, loungey days.

A warm palette of cream, beige and ivory tones gave the room a polished feel without being flashy. One standout was the oversized abstract artwork above the bed –lavender, blue and gold tones added a splash of colour, and the elegant gold frame tied in nicely with the warm wood accents throughout.

Soft drapes framed floor-to-ceiling windows that filled the room with daylight. A small seating area of two upholstered armchairs and a round table was positioned to take advantage of the view overlooking cosmopolitan Adliya, the Old Palace gardens and the city skyline in the distance. Despite being close to the main roads, the room was remarkably quiet, and with high-speed internet and a work desk, it's a great spot for catching up on emails. At night, the ambient lighting from the bedside lamps created a relaxed, cosy atmosphere.

The contemporary aesthetic continued into the bathroom, where curved lines dominated, from the rounded bathtub and vanity to the glass-enclosed rain shower. Mosaic tiling in gold, bronze and beige gave it a spa-like quality, while the large mirrors and BYREDO Bal d'Afrique toiletries added a further touch of luxury. Plush bathrobes and slippers, a large TV with premium channels, a safe, hairdryer, tea and coffee maker and minibar completed the experience – comfortable, classic luxury with contemporary touches.

Exploring And Relaxing

On our way to the pool, we had a little wander to check out the hotel's other spaces. Just opposite the elevators is a spacious Business Centre, ideal for anyone wanting a quiet place to work. Past the lobby, we noticed a machine for hiring

power chargers, which struck me as a genuinely useful touch, especially for business travellers caught out before a meeting. There's a large central rotunda featuring a piano where you can sit and take stock, flanked by restaurants including Al Waha, the all-day dining venue where we returned for breakfast the next morning; the Italian eatery La Pergola; Margarita Mexicana, where we'd booked for dinner; and a few other outlets on the lower level. The hotel houses numerous restaurants serving cuisines from across the world, plus lounges, cafés and bars.

Past the Oak Lounge, we headed outdoors, where the scenery shifted to something more tranquil – birds chirping, a distant waterfall growing louder as we neared the pool. Down the wooden stairs, we found Typhoon Lounge, a laid-back spot cocooned by greenery, serving Thai bites in an open-air setting, with live music in the evenings. It was a beautiful day, and the lagoon-style pool beckoned – the water just the right temperature for an afternoon dip. Set in tropical gardens, there were plenty of sun loungers for catching some rays, with the waterfall tucked into a shaded, cave-like corner of the pool. A couple of kids were enjoying a paddle in the children's pool nearby, and a small play area added to the family-friendly feel.

After a swim, feeling a bit peckish, we stopped by the poolside bar for a quick bite, enjoying the views over the hotel from the upstairs section. Suitably relaxed, we headed back to the room for an afternoon siesta before the pampering that awaited us later that day – the staycation was going swimmingly so far.

Spa Session

After resting up, my partner and I indulged in some metime – the gym for him, an express massage for me!

Bodyzone, the hotel's men's gym, has the latest state-ofthe-art fitness equipment, a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. Meanwhile, The Gulf Spa & Salon is three floors of bliss, offering facials, body treatments, healing therapies and hammams, with separate men's and women's treatment rooms, a rooftop terrace, juice bars and a beauty salon. The award-winning spa is something of a star in Bahrain, and rightfully so. Adjacent to the pool and accessible from outside, the ladies' spa immediately puts you at ease with its water feature and tranquil music. After a warm welcome, I changed into my bathrobe and was led upstairs by my masseuse, Tada. With gentle music of chirping birds and trickling water in the background, calmness took over the moment I lay on the massage bed. Tada warmed lavender oil into my back and legs before beginning a Swedish massage that, whether through her skilful hands or my own imagination, somehow transported me somewhere with white sand and no phone signal. Every knot in my shoulders unfurled, every ache in my lower back dissipated and every strain from a day in heels melted away. Relaxing yet somehow energising too, it was the perfect pick-me-up before dinner.

Flavours of Mexico

Refreshed and a little glowy, we headed down for dinner at Margarita Mexicana, one of my favourite Mexican restaurants on the island. With its authentic ingredients

and Aztec-influenced dishes and décor, this awardwinning spot will probably bring you as close as you'll get to Mexico without leaving Bahrain. The interior mixes bold, colourful geometric patterns with warm, earthy tones, from vibrant Aztec-inspired wall panels and traditional Talavera-tiled tables to terracotta flooring, tan and brown furnishings, a wrought-iron chandelier and decorative rattan paraphernalia hanging from the ceiling. The place was packed even on a weekday, which tells you something about its popularity with both locals and expats.

As we settled in over a pitcher of margarita and worked through the menu, we already knew we'd start with the signature tableside guacamole, prepared fresh in front of you – easily the best guacamole on the island, and worth the visit alone. We also ordered Jalapeños Rellenos (stuffed jalapeños with cheddar cheese), veggie Quesadillas and Southwest Chimichanga, finishing on a sweet note with Tres Leches and lingering over crispy Churros and Americanos. A delicious end to a fabulous date night – one I wouldn't mind repeating soon. Relaxed and satiated, we retired for a night of blissful sleep, dozing off the moment our heads hit those impossibly soft pillows.

Breakfast Delights

The next morning, we headed to Al Waha for some brekkie, and the buffet spread did not disappoint – cereals, pancakes and viennoiserie, Arabic breakfast staples, salads, madeto-order eggs, continental options, fresh fruit, yoghurt and juices. Everything was fresh and deliciously well made, a good send-off for the day ahead. A late check-out gave us a couple of extra hours to enjoy the room, but alas, it was time to say goodbye to our mini staycation.

Fond Farewell

Our short stay at the Gulf Hotel was everything we'd hoped for, and more. We arrived wanting rest and relaxation and left feeling rejuvenated and reacquainted with this iconic island gem – promising to return very soon! ✤

JAR: My journey in art began during my school years, when I had a strong passion for drawing. However, as is often the case during adolescence, I drifted away from it. Later, after travelling to India, I returned home and, finding myself without a job or commitments, decided to pick up painting again. My first exhibition was a group exhibition at Al Hala Club in 1987. That experience was a definitive turning point, a ‘to be or not to be’ moment, and I chose to fully commit to art. From then on, I became self-taught, practising daily and mastering the fundamentals. In 1990, I held my first solo exhibition, which I consider the true spark of my artistic career.

fact: Your work spans painting, etching, printmaking, sculpture and drawing. Is there a medium you particularly enjoy working with, and what makes it your favourite?

JAR: All forms of art are interconnected, and I believe each medium carries its own unique joy. Painting and drawing bring a distinct kind of pleasure; printmaking and engraving bring another; and sculpture has a special allure. I don't confine myself to a single style. What matters most is that the structural foundation and fundamentals of the craft are strong, whether in sculpture, painting or printmaking. When I need a creative break, I pivot to sculpture, then return to painting or move into

printmaking. Navigating the broader world of art is a personal pleasure and, ultimately, a quest to find oneself.

fact: Muharraq, its old neighbourhoods and the sea feature strongly in your work. What is it about these elements that continues to inspire you after all these years?

JAR: Place holds immense significance for any individual. I grew up in Muharraq and know its people, streets, alleyways and neighbourhoods intimately. These surroundings undoubtedly shaped my identity as an artist. The sea is also an essential part of who we are. After all, we are Bahrain, the country of two seas. To this day, I visit the sea almost daily. For me, it is like a distant rival that inspires many of my concepts and colour palettes. I once dedicated an entire exhibition to the movement of water and wind at sea during the night, using only shades of black. The sea also gives me a sense of freedom and openness, providing the energy I need not only for my work but for life itself.

fact: Looking back at your body of work, is there one particular piece that holds special meaning for you, and why?

JAR: As I mentioned, I am against sticking to a single, rigid style; I don't believe in confining art to a label. I simply create what inspires me. What truly matters is that I completely master my artistic tools and the techniques I use. My artworks are like my children; I never sign a piece unless I am entirely satisfied with it. Once it bears my

signature, it means I love it, and I don't favour one piece over another. As you mature as an artist, you look back and notice certain flaws in pieces you created 10 or 15 years ago. You learn to move past those mistakes, but you leave the older works exactly as they are because they perfectly represent the honesty of that specific moment in time.

fact: You’re planning to open The Museum of Engraving and Printmaking – Jamal A. Rahim Gallery. What inspired you to create this space, and what role do you hope it will play in Bahrain's cultural landscape?

JAR: Printmaking is my core specialisation, and I am wellrecognised both locally and internationally in this field. Many of my artworks are held in prestigious global collections, including the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore and the British Museum, and I have received two major international printmaking awards. Unfortunately, in the Arab region, printmaking and engraving haven't received the recognition they deserve. Many artists abandoned the medium and turned to painting because works on paper are less commercially sought after than canvas. Even I have had to paint and focus on fine art drawing to cover daily expenses. Having spent my life in this field, I made a commitment to preserve the legacy of artists devoted to the craft. This led me to launch what may be the Arab world's first initiative dedicated to collecting print and engraving works by Arab, Khaleeji, Egyptian and international artists. Located in Muharraq along the Pearl Path, we hope to inaugurate it soon as the Museum of Engraving and Printmaking, and I hope it will truly add value to Bahrain’s cultural landscape.

fact: Are there any upcoming creative projects that you're currently working on or that are in the pipeline?

JAR: To be honest, there are new projects happening every day,

but I am the type of artist who works continuously on various concepts and then sets them aside. I keep creating, and when the right opportunity comes along, I already have a body of work ready. I can then select a specific collection from these pieces, curate them around a cohesive theme and present them in a solo exhibition.

fact: If you could own any artwork from history and hang it in your home, what would it be and why?

JAR: I have a deep love for art in general, and I always wished to bring the works of great masters into my own home. Over the years, I have built a substantial private collection featuring both paintings and print works, though my primary passion and focus remain on collecting handmade print artworks. In this field specifically, my collection includes works by masters such as Rembrandt, Goya, Damien Hirst, Henry Moore, Joan Miró and many others, alongside works by major Arab artists.

fact: When you're away from the studio, where do you find inspiration outside of art?

JAR: In my view, the rhythm of life is the ultimate foundation of any creative idea. When you are rooted in the history of your region and country, everything becomes a potential source of inspiration. Inspiration doesn't just fall from the sky; it is the cumulative result of everything that surrounds a human being. War, peace, beauty, nature and the environment – all of these elements serve as endless resources for an artist's inspiration. ✤

CONFESSIONSII

She’s back with the sequel to 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor. Continuing her exploration of dance and electronic music, Madonna’s new album was conceived during delays to a planned biopic. A response to world issues, she felt “the world is in a very dark place and people need to dance”. And though some tracks, such as Fragile, deal with difficult familial issues, the beats are distinctly upbeat, for example Bring Your Love, featuring Sabrina Carpenter, which samples Inner City’s 1988 classic, Good Life

MUSIC,FASHION,FILM

How do you follow the hyperpop steamroller that was 2024’s phenomenally successful Brat? The answer, for Charli XCX, is to embrace the dark side with a more soft-rockinfused sound for her seventh studio album. Lead single Rock Music features distorted guitars while gently mocking of the genre. The second release, SS26, plays into the fashion side of the title with the line “walking on a runway that goes straight to hell”. We can’t wait to hear what else is in store.

FOREIGNTONGUES

It’s hard to believe these rockers have been making music for six decades – and they’ve already written half the material for another album, so they’re not giving up any time soon. Recorded over seven years, the latest release includes an appearance by the late Charlie Watts alongside contributions from Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Robert Smith and Chad Smith. The first single Rough and Twisted came out in April, offering reassurance that both attitude and musicianship are very much intact.

HISTORICAL FICTION / CRIME FICTION / THRILLER

Cool Machine by

#1 New York Times bestselling author and two-time Pulitzer winner Colson Whitehead gifts us the final volume of his Harlem Trilogy. Bringing New York City to life as it climbes out of recession into the worst of 1980s’ excesses. From the glittering skyscrapers to the displaced people huddling below, the characters spring from the pages in a tale of violence, humour and possible redemption.

RELIABLY ELEGANT, SEASONALLY STUNNING

The new season’s offering from Italian house Brunello Cucinelli reflects an ongoing dialogue between refinement and ease.

For women, SS26 explores a natural harmony inspired by the elements. Earth influences the palette's myriad natural shades, including sand, ecru, white clay, root and earthy browns. Summer tweeds, macro-chevron patterns, needle-punched fabrics and tactile details add dimension to the colours, combining depth with sophisticated tailoring.

Air brings lightness, freshness and femininity flowing through open-knit patterns, perforated surfaces and mesh and drifting across lace effects, gauzes and diaphanous fabrics.

The quality of water flows through new proportions, updated cuts and ergonomic constructions, giving the silhouettes a strong, compelling appeal.

And fire delivers the passion that drives the pursuit of beauty with vibrant hues, such as red lava, rhubarb and firebrick tones revealing the intense spirit of summer.

For men, the season presents a refined evolution of contemporary tailoring, where relaxed proportions meet precise craftsmanship. Lightweight fabrics, subtle textures and luminous tones define a wardrobe designed for movement, comfort and understated sophistication.

The prestige of wool, silk and linen is evident in the consistently sophisticated, flowing silhouettes crafted from fresh, light fabrics. Vibrant hues – orange, apricot, royal blue and coral red – take centre stage, blending into sophisticated, balanced colour schemes alongside bright whites and elegant neutrals, while total looks in blue reinterpret an iconic Solomeo shade. The distinction between formal and informal is blurred. Echoing early ’90s-inspired elegance, the blazer is slightly lengthened. Trousers follow soft lines while maintaining a structured silhouette. A new capsule collection of cocktail and informal evening wear features jackets with satin-free shawl lapels, paired with silkcotton knits for a sophisticated yet unexpected elegance. Lightness defines the outerwear category: trenches and coats embrace natural movement, with pure silk fabrics combining nobility and fluidity. And knitwear plays with light, fresh textures and subtle details. Precious leathers, supple to the touch and in light tones, evoke refined luxury. Meanwhile, footwear has been reinvented with a deconstructed approach. ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About?

This Duck’s Not In A Row

Can there be anyone who hasn’t smiled at the antics of Merlín the duck, who became the unofficial mascot of the World Cup when he was spotted joining thousands of joyous fans celebrating Mexico’s tournament-opening victory. The beloved pet of Carla Gómez and her son Cristian, Merlín has gone viral on social media, strutting his stuff on the streets of Mexico, wearing his green football jersey. His fame has even spread internationally with segments on the winged wonder appearing on Britain’s BBC and NBC Los Angeles.

Crowned a World Cup 'ambassador' for Mexico, Merlín even paid a visit to the country’s presidential palace, where he joined President Sheinbaum’s news briefing, and was granted access to the Azteca Stadium grounds to film a segment with Televisa, one of Latin America’s largest television networks. But then, his wings were metaphorically clipped. Fans had hoped the avid avian Incondicional would be allowed to stay in the stadium to enjoy the match with them. But FIFA said no – that would be against regulations. No ducks in these rows.

Cone Heads For Scotland

Scotland’s Tartan Army of football fans have been winning friends wherever they’ve gone during the World Cup tournament. An estimated 50,000 of them travelled to Boston for their first match, which brought a win over Haiti – the country’s first at a World Cup in 36 years. Tartan Army pipers staged marches as thousands of kilt-wearing supporters created a carnival atmosphere, pubs ran out of hops and a police officer was spotted doing keepy uppies in the fan zone.

So contagious was the fun and good humour that Americans even adopted the

slogan No Scotland, No Party, which was coined in a song by Scottish musician Nick Morgan, to mark his country’s qualification for UEFA 2024.

All good things must come to an end though and, after that first win, Scotland couldn’t maintain the momentum and were soon headed home.

But, in a final tribute to the affection the Scottish fans had earnt, as fans began to depart, America’s TSA (Transportation Security Administration) posted social media images of its sniffer dogs sporting the traditional headgear of the Scottish fan, an orange traffic cone!

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Norway’s fans have also gone viral at the World Cup with the Viking Row – in which supporters sit together, chant Hu! Ru! and mimic rowing a longboat – spotted across the tournament from stadiums to streets, trains and even back home in Norway. Perhaps it’s not surprising that the normally composed Nordics have gotten a bit excited, it’s their first World Cup since 1998 and the national team was pictured in full Viking regalia before their journey to the US.

In fact, the team even joined in the fun, sitting down to 'row' on the pitch

following their 3-2 victory over Senegal. And, in Oslo, the Norwegian Parliament got in on the act with MPs performing the ritual from their seats in support of the national team.

So far, Norway has had a fair amount to celebrate (not including the slapping from an on-form France) but we can’t help but wonder at the psychological effect of their antics on other teams –imagine watching a bunch of Vikings yelling and rowing, then seeing all 1.95 metres of Erling Haaland chasing you across the pitch!
