Running in parallel with the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, this experiment sheds light on creative processes that take place when two individuals (from different creative disciplines) collaborate.

Every year five artists and five chefs get together and work to produce a creative product; be it a painting, installation, video, cake, drink, all or something completely different. The result of their two months’ work, which is documented in a short film and a publication, will be presented during the course of the week, where they share and display their collective creations.

MANAGEMENT GOALS INTERCONTINENTAL REGENCY BAHRAIN announced the appointment of Philipp John Economou as the hotel’s new Area General Manager. German national Economou started his career as a front office clerk at the Athenaeum InterContinental in Greece. Economou soon fully integrated himself into the InterContinental Group and set off on his next journey in Spain as assistant F&B manager in 2002. Later on he moved to InterContinental Carlton, France for one year as an F&B Director before moving to InterContinental Miami, USA, where he led the business to be recognized as the most profitable F&B operation across the (IHG) hotels group in the region. Economou started his first experience in the Middle East as General Manager at Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi where he improved the hotels overall performance to achieve 10 out of 10 on Hotel Metrics 2014. CAREEM NOW What do we want? Careem. When do we want it? Now. OUR FAVOURITE RIDE-HAILING SERVICE is taking things up a notch! Careem, the region’s leading technology platform, has launched an online delivery platform for goods and services.

Careem NOW is Careem’s expansion into the food delivery market as the company expands its platform beyond ride hailing to payments, delivery and mass transportation.

Adeeb Warsi, MD of Careem NOW, said: “Careem NOW can do for food delivery what Careem has successfully done for ride hailing. Careem NOW will create awesome dining experiences, more employment opportunities and have a hugely-positive impact on the rapidly growing food delivery market as it’s rolled out in each country. It’s another new vertical from Careem as we expand beyond ride-hailing.”

Over $150 million will be invested in Careem NOW, reflecting Careem’s level of commitment in bringing a first-class delivery service to the region. The service will initially launch in Dubai and Jeddah. Careem NOW will operate via a separate app available from today for Android and iOS. Careem’s 33 million existing customers can add food delivery through the Careem NOW tech and enjoy the convenience of a single identity across Careem and Careem NOW. Existing Careem customers will be logged seamlessly onto the new app, and stored payment details and addresses 24

will be automatically linked. Careem NOW will be operated independently from the ride-hailing business, and delivery will work through both a marketplace and dedicated-fleet model.

Operating seven days a week (and in line with restaurant operating hours), the service will also have a dedicated call centre. The pricing structure includes a customer fee for delivery. The zone-based launch will begin with Dubai and Jeddah, with Egypt and Pakistan to follow.

Warsi added: “Over 85 percent of the food delivery markets in our region still operates via traditional call-and-order methods.

Through our extensive infrastructure network and technology, we can immediately offer a vastly superior service.”

According to internal research, food delivery in Careem NOW's target countries is predicted to become a around $25 billion market by 2022.

Careem NOW follows on from the launch of Careem Bus in Cairo and peer-to-peer credit transfer as Careem expands into new verticals and building out its platform businesses. ✤

BYE, BYE PLASTIC! ALOSRA SUPERMARKET LAUNCHED ITS first plastic bag free week across its Bahrain-based stores on November 18, 2018. The week saw the supermarket save 95,000 plastic bags from being used through offering customers with alternative options.

Alosra supermarket alone uses five million plastic bags a year, and with the launch of this initiative, it takes its first step towards a series of changes that will help reduce this figure.

“We need to start somewhere - it’s about taking small steps until we reach our ultimate goal,” said Yasmine Mohamed, Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing at BMMI. “We want to help transform Bahrain's plastic infrastructure by working towards reducing our environmental impact.

Our vision is in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals; half of which are directly environmental in focus or address the sustainability of natural resources.

That’s why Alosra is currently on a plastic reduction mission, working on finding suitable and sustainable packaging solutions for our products,” she added.

Jaffar Al Asfoor, General Manager of Food Retailing and Production, stated that one of supermarket’s main goals will be to remove all plastic carrier bags. “Our plastic bag free week will continue to take place every month to help raise awareness and empower customers to change their habits,” he said. “We hope that our customers will be encouraged to purchase and use our ECO bags which have an average lifespan equal to more than 700 plastic bags,” he added.

BMMI was recognised by the Supreme Council for the Environment for launching this campaign and Alosra is committed to sustain this initiative, with the next plastic bag free week taking place from December 26, 2018 to January 2, 2019. ✤

AS PART OF ITS CORPORATE Social Responsibility programme, Ramada Hotel & Suites Amwaj Islands and Wyndham Garden Manama organised a beach clean-up drive at the Juffair Beach on December 23, 2018. The beach clean-up aimed to emphasise RHSA & WGM environmental awareness initiatives, promote volunteerism among its team members in cleaning the coastal shores and campaign for the protection of the Kingdom’s marine life.

A total of 45 team members and hotel management joined hands in collecting 30 bags of plastics and other nonbiodegradable wastes that are harmful to the environment.

The beach clean-up drive comes in line with the efforts of the Wyndham Green to provide avenues for the team members to share their efforts in achieving environmental sustainability and empower their sense of stewardship in the community.

Ramada Hotel & Suites Amwaj Islands and Wyndham Garden Manama encouraged its associates and guests to think and act green, to create small changes in our everyday activites that have a positive impact on our local society and future generation. ✤

Research and planning are the keys to staying up with these changes and developments. Looking into market insights and analyzing data allows us to create comprehensive plans that are aligned with the direction that the market is shifting toward.

We cannot predict the future however; we can anticipate it and try to be try to be visionary and open-minded.

What keeps you motivated to reach your professional goals and come to work every day with a positive outlook?

Hospitality is a tough industry with a lot of competition. Tell us some of the ways in which you are working to grow and sustain the success of Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa...

As the market is getting more competitive in the kingdom and in the region, we are always on the lookout for new opportunities to attract more guests to the property. This sometimes means looking into markets that are farther from home. A recent example of this would be our successful ventures into the emerging Russian and Indian markets, attracting many tourists from that part of the world by catering to a gap in the market using strategies that are fit to tackle the needs of these specific markets.

What were some of your key achievements for Sofitel Bahrain in 2018?

We have successfully been able to reposition Sofitel Bahrain as the premium luxury resort in Bahrain for families locally as well as from Saudi Arabia. We have also penetrated the CIS and European markets. I was a key influencer in establishing the first direct-chartered flights between Moscow and Bahrain in collaboration with local authorities, as of October 2018. We also ignited the Indian wedding craze, rebranding the property as the ultimate island wedding destination, resulting in various large-scale weddings at the property. fact magazine

What are some of your predictions for the hospitality industry in Bahrain, for 2019...

Many more properties will announce their entry into the market as the tourism sector grows further in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This will create an even more competitive atmosphere in the market in 2019. It will drive many hotels to pursue aggressive Sales tactical offers in the hopes of getting a larger market share and retaining their current share. Gradually, with the opening of new properties, there will be further source markets motivated to visit Bahrain as well.

Tell us some of your own personal and professional goals that you would like to achieve over the next year…

I aim to overcome the upcoming challenges that the Bahraini market will present in 2019. These challenges will hopefully open new opportunities for me personally in terms of enhancing my knowledge and growing my skills.

I am also looking forward to achieving a better position for Sofitel Bahrain and to retain the great momentum we currently possess well into the New Year by always looking for new opportunities and attracting a good flow of business from emerging markets around the world. ✤

Complete with an en-suite bathroom featuring a bath tub or walk-in shower – ours had a deep-soaking tub and a large shower too, with a layout that we’d happily have in our own home. Gusto’s charm lies in its ability to give diners a little bit of everything, but what we love most is that this place is not just about your standard pasta and pizza – in fact, the latter isn’t even an option – which is a pleasant surprise. Must-tries here include the classic Italian dish of Parmigiana, the homely Beef Lasagne, and the meaty goodness of the Lamb Chops.

Furthermore, we were completely blown away by the hotel’s Friday Brunch offering. Set up at the all-day dining restaurant Salt & Pepper and aptly dubbed Around the World in 80 Bites. Themed around Jules Verne’s book Around the World in 80 Days, you can explore with Phileas Fogg and Passepartout as you set off to journey through world cuisines including Britain, Arabia, India, Hong Kong, Japan, the the Americas to name but a few. There is something for mum, dad and the kids, making this a fun interactive brunching experience. Grownups can also enjoy the themed drink stations, while the children enjoy all the activities designed to be educational as well as fun! The quality of food is excellent – everything from the salads to the curries, the pies and sweet treats is fresh and packed with the most satisfying flavours – it’s hands-down one of our favourite brunches in Dubai.

n our experience, BMW’s are a safe bet when it comes to selecting a high performance, comfortable and attractive vehicle. Over the years we have been privileged enough to test drive many models produced by this German automobile giant and we cannot recall any of their vehicles not living up to our expectations.

With this in mind, the idea of taking the new BMW 420i Coupé Sport for a spin, compliments of Euro Motors, was most appealing and needless to say, once again, we were not disappointed.

As soon as the 420i came into view we were already impressed with the car’s sporty lines and curves. Immediately obvious was its slightly larger frame compared to its predecessor. With a noticeably wider stance and a longer wheelbase, this coupé has a commanding presence, highlighted by the trademark BMW short overhangs and elongated bonnet. New bi-LED headlights and LED fog lights are fitted as standard. The perfectly crafted roofline adds to the aerodynamic nature of the exterior design and hints at the car’s on-road capabilities. The rear end of the vehicle continues where the front end left off with a low and sporty appearance. The wheel arches are emphasised by the bold horizontal lines as well as the elongated design of the rear light clusters. The modified air intakes, line-specific applications and the new rear apron are all attention-grabbing features that add to the already striking look of this sports coupé.

Slipping inside the cabin, we were anxious to see if the interior lived up to the high standards already set by the exterior. The electroplated detailing and chrome applications immediately confirmed the continued quality of this vehicle’s design and construction. The seats were comfortable as was the steering wheel in-hand, and the layout of all features seemed both stylish and practical. The center console with its high-gloss black finish as well as the instrument panel’s double stitching showcased the exclusive quality of this BMW. The Navigation system Professional present in the 420i Coupé Sport features an interface that is easy to use thanks to the large tile-style control pads. These control pads can be rearranged to suit one’s preferences and display a constantly updated version of the linked menu content. This ensures its operation is more intuitive for users. Another fantastic feature of this BMW is the Multifunctional Instrument Display, which allows for multiple visualisation options for all displays, depending on the driving experience mode selected.

Once we were completely satisfied that BMW had once again constructed a beautiful vehicle both inside and out, it was time to take to the tarmac. Powered by an 184hp, 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine, we were soon tapping on the break to reign in the speed of this obviously hugely powerful vehicle. We were most impressed by the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission as well as the capable breaking system of this coupé as it sped up and slowed down effortlessly. The revised suspension set-up of the vehicle is stiffer than previous models, allowing for sportier handling without any loss of comfort. Improvements have been made to both the latitudinal and longitudinal dynamics and the 420i

now boasts steering that is more communicative as well as enhanced straight-line stability.

A final feature that must be mentioned is the new BMW Connected app. It introduces an all-encompassing digital concept that provides a support tool for all elements of your BMW driving experience. This app combines all functions that cover day-to-day mobility requirements. BMW Connected comes as standard on the new BMW 420i Coupé Sport.

After returning this beautiful machine to Euro Motors, we discussed all of the remarkable features of this vehicle over our customary post test-drive cup of coffee. We agreed that BMW has managed to produce an outstanding sports vehicle that is not only comfortable, powerful, practical and responsive but is also beautiful to look at from every angle. ✤

ress Play: Upon the drive up towards the Jumeirah Royal Saray, it becomes pretty evident that you’re going to be in for an incredible experience. Taking a moment to ogle at the beautiful hotel is a must for all before entering the truly wonderful PLAY Restaurant & Lounge. We were greeted warmly by the ever so attentive staff and shown to our table in the bar area of the restaurant. We perused the menu with the assistance of Floor Manager, Bernard, who vowed to take us on a culinary journey like we’d never been on before, from the Far East to France, and back again.

Press Pause: PLAY believes food is about love, passion, humility and joy. Who could disagree with that? PLAY prides itself on offering a mischievous food experience which is heavily focussed upon sharing. Premium imported and locally sourced farming ingredients are utilised throughout the extensive menu, affording to a delectable affair. Are you ready?

Press Play: ‘Mediterrasian’ is a new food category to me but one which combines two of my favourite cuisines. We began with the Pita Surprise, which we were advised to devour straight away as they must be enjoyed hot. Safe to say we followed the rules. The lightly seared wagyu beef and truffle butter exploded like a bite-size firework in the mouth.

We were then treated to a truly French experience, Snails! Now, if you haven’t had snails you will probably be a bit sceptical and who could blame you, but if you do one thing this year, trust the French. On a bed of Parmesan doused in squid ink, these are truly magnifique!

Then came arguably the simplest dish on the menu, Lemon Prawns. Oh my!

Cooked to perfection, they melted in the mouth. The Mrs loved them so much that she’s been dreaming about them for the past two weeks. Following quickly upon their tails came Veal Scaloppine, Crispy Duck Salad and Burrata. Special mention to the Duck which was absolutely delicious. Served in a bowl of dried ice, the imagery is spectacular and adds so much to the dining experience. Perfect for the ‘gram. My stand-out however, has

to be the Raw Wagyu. Thinly sliced beef, with truffle sesame dressing and grated fresh truffle, this must have been the food of the Gods. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed an appetiser so much in all my years; I could happily eat this everyday for the rest of my life. AMAZING! Press Pause: One of the first things that struck me about PLAY was the music. Live Spanish guitar brought the sounds of the Med to our ears, all the while being played over chilledout beats. An awesome combination which fit perfectly into the persona of the restaurant.

After a couple of muddled drinks, Arabian Sands and Passion with Play, we were suitably reinvigorated and ready to tackle our mains.

Ready, steady…

Press Play: Cue two waiters with a huge barrel of parmesan cheese, which they then proceeded to create the most delightful Spaghetti Carbonara.

Scraping the 24-month aged cheese whilst mixing in veal pancetta and an onsen egg was a wonderful sight. Then came the Fish in a Bag,

sea bream with the flavours of the Mediterranean permeating the succulent white meat. The dish is both steamed and served in a bag before it is cut to release the aromas which take you immediately to the beaches of Southern Spain.

We were then greeted by Head Chef, Meidy Zuhri, who delivered to us the most tender ribs. Cooked for 76 hours, these Angus beef ribs melt in the mouth. They were nothing short of exceptional and truly added to the most wonderfully conceived food baby to ever grace my frame.

We weren’t finished though, the pièce de résistance came in the form of Le Roche, Ferrero Rocher ice cream and orange foam, an awesome way to end our culinary journey.

Press Pause: Make sure to check out The Terrace upstairs for after-dinner drinks; the perfect place to party on for the rest of the night or just enjoy a nightcap to round off your unforgettable experience at PLAY. Press Stop. Press Rewind. Press Play. Again. ✤

With the live cooking stations enticing us for what’s to come, we sat down for our appetisers. A delicious selection of Hummus, Vine Leaves, Fattoush and Tabouleh with Lemon and Pomegranate Sauce we knew we were off to a great start. The Hummus is ultra-smooth and creamy and is exactly what hummus dreams are made of. The Fattoush and Tabouleh are fresh and are a delectable combination of vibrant flavours and textures, while the citrusy Lemon and Pomegranate sauce truly brings the salads together, individually.

Moving on to the hot mezze, we were presented with an array of authentic Lebanese options - we couldn’t wait to dig in! As we made our way through the delicious Meat Kibbeh, Batata Hara, Cheese Rolls and Meat Sambousek we were in absolute food heaven! The classic Kibbeh is done just right and the meat is tender and oozing with succulent flavour, while the Cheese Rolls are crisp, light and oh-so cheesy. That being said, the Batata Hara was definitely a favourite for everyone on the table.

A flavourful medley of potatoes, red peppers, coriander, chilli and garlic - the dish takes the humble potato to a whole new level. Fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside, this dish is a total win if you’re someone who loves spicy food.

A quintessentially Mediterranean diet, Lebanese cuisine effortlessly incorporates everything from diversity to simplicity. A menu based on tradition, freshness and a passion for food, Bayti represents everything that Lebanese food stands for. A true classic, Middle Eastern dining is incomplete without a hearty helping of Mixed Grills. A decadent assortment of Shish Tawook, Shish Kabab and Chicken and Beef Kofta served with Hummus, Garlic Sauce, Pickled Cucumbers, Parsley, Tomato, Onion and French Fries - need we say more? The meat is succulent and their signature marinades pack a ton of taste, while the garlic sauce gives it just the right amount of kick - we couldn’t get enough!

The New Year has begun and for those that made New Year’s resolutions, how are they going? Have they fallen by the way side already? For those that have stuck with it, I salute you.

For those, who year in year out complain about the same things - it’s time to STOP and take a good hard look at yourself because where you are in life right now is your own doing – a result of your own choices and decisions.

It’s time to come out of your comfort zone, it’s time that you put together a plan, it’s time for you to create a game plan, it’s time for you to start working on a new mind set; it’s time to start putting your physical practice into place to get to your goal. You need to start taking OWNERSHIP of your life.

You’re going to have problems along the way with friends and family telling you, you can’t make it, or you won’t make it. The fear of what happens if you don’t make it, the fear of losing friends when you do make it.

Everything you want in life is down to you taking that first step and doing something about it. You want to lose some weight then change your diet, get yourself a Personal Trainer, join a gym or start doing some classes but if you don’t do any of these things don’t expect any results. For you to succeed, you need to take ownership of your life. It’s that simple! ✤

While setting and achieving personal and professional goals is a very individualistic pursuit, I think we can all agree that following through on these goals is definitely the hardest part. As another year of resolutions and promises rolls in, it’s important to remember to keep your goals realistic and attainable. Starting small may seem insignificant at first, but it can make the biggest impact to your life in the long run.

While bigger, loftier goals can be self-defeating, smaller goals are so much easier to achieve and will leave you with a warm feeling of self-accomplishment.

Instead of promising yourself that you’ll go to the gym everyday and beating yourself up over it, try and cut out soda out of your diet. If you’ve promised yourself that you’ll be more social and network more, make sure you only make social commitments that you actually intend on keeping.

Saying no feels so much better than cancelling plans later!

In 2019, take a fresh approach towards your New Year resolutions by recognising what needs to be changed and making a feasible plan to achieve it. Something that I have found really helpful and encouraging is keeping a diary or journal to record your progress. Marking your progress or lack thereof will make you accountable and much more likely to follow through. As for my New Year resolutions, I plan on practicing mindfulness, reading more and travelling as much as I can! Here’s to a happy, healthy and amazing 2K19! ✤

And if I’m looking for the heritage and old gold memories of Bahrain history, Bab al Bahrain will be it . Every corner will tell you a story, even the walls speak out history and memories . I like the diversity of all these kind of spices there, the texture the colour and the smell it brings back memories.

I don’t have a regular routine as I believe that routine kills creativity, but I can tell you that my day is very dynamic and active. As a selfdevelopment coach you are always looking for the updates and running after the new ideas in such a domain.

This requires you to read, search and

meet new professionals and interact along. In order to be ready for this busy day, sports comes as a vital part of my day, it keeps me going and fresh all the day long.

Share with us some of your personal and professional goals for 2019…

My 2019 is full of challenges, I will be launching my training and development online virtual courses, editing and publishing my book and spreading a new ideas in the self development field through out my educational center which will be launched in September 2019. I do have a big list of personal goals, however I believe what is personal is better kept personal!
