The Market will also offer a series of workshops, a music programme hosted by Boho Baha, a collective that works with creative musicians and artists in Bahrain, and various activities for the children in collaboration with Project 616, an independent volunteering initiative that organizes activities. eef Mall invited a group of Bahraini artists to create an underwater scene at the Magic Island theme park, capturing the essence of island life with sea-inspired murals. Saleh Al Mahoozi was one of the many artists that gave Magic Island its underwater look. The underwater murals at Magic Island had 11 talented Bahraini artists work around the clock for almost two months to create an underwater look. Most of the images were inspired by Bahrain’s marine wildlife. Each area of Magic Island was thought through completely to bring the underwater look to life. Once the drawings were complete, the base color was added with brushes, water and silk colour. The fine details were then stenciled on the walls with a projector and chalk. Spread across 4500 square meters, the new Magic Island combines the relaxation and enchantment of an island, and takes visitors on an unforgettable voyage across sea and land. Boasting six unique zones - Marina Deck, Beach Sand, Rock Pool, Underwater, Caribbean Island and the Haunted House - every corner of Magic Island delivers an epic adventure, surprise and a once-in-a-lifetime thrill for the entire family. A rtistic D ia l o g ue For the first time in the Gulf, more than 50 paintings, sculptures and drawings by French-Romanian artist Ramniceanu will be brought into dialogue, providing an overall view of his atypical path and ever changing styles. The exhibition, taking place at the Shaikh Ebrahim Centre, Bin Mattar House, in Muharraq, will showcase some of the Ramniceanu’s most important works. The pieces on display explore his profoundly symbolic content and tireless questioning of the concepts of memory and identity. The language of material plays an essential role in the work of Stefan Ramniceanu, most of whose pictures have a three dimensional structure. In a career spanning 35 years, his work has been developing in a process of accumulation, mingling and reworking of themes, motifs and symbols, which recur and overlap repeatedly in diverse media. United Arab Emirates The Arab Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2014 took place in Dubai under the patronage of Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Tuwaijri, Arab League’s Assistant Undersecretary for Economic Affairs. The Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) won the Arab Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2014 in recognition of its social, environmental and sustainable development efforts. GPIC has gone all out to decrease environmental damage from operational purposes, seeking the cleanest industry for which they are known in the region.

London With over 5000 exhibitors taking part at the 35th Annual World Travel Market (WTM) in London, The Bahrain Culture Ministry is one among the 180 countries. Led by under-secretary for tourism Shaikh Khalid bin Humood Al Khalifa, the Kingdom’s highlighted the importance of the event in promoting tourism in Bahrain and also showed the interest of the ministry to take part in such get-togethers to fuse Bahrain as a world tourism destination. WTM is one of the world’s largest trade fairs.

Somalia Secretary General of Royal Charity Organisation; Dr Mustafa Al Sayed visited Somalia to inaugurate Bahrain’s aid projects. The project provides medical aid to drought-hit Somalians and includes the Bahrain Specialist hospital, Bahrain Scientific Complex-Mogadishu National University and 10 water wells across the country. Cataract patients were helped and two tones of medical items were sent as well.

Publishers, librarians, authors, and those who love to read will certainly flock to this popular event which will also have seminars, lectures, workshops, poetry readings and many more parallel happenings throughout the 10-day event.

Iranian artist Shirin Neshat presents a solo exhibition from her vivid work. Curated by Abdellah Karroum, Afterwards introduces a group of existing and newly produced works, including a photographic series inspired by the famous Shahnama poem - The Book of Kings - as well as a selection of video installations commenting on historical, cultural and political realities on which Shirin has focused on for 30 years. The vivid pieces will provoke emotional tension and challenge views.

hat makes a good photographer? Is it the camera… or the lens… is it the lighting… or the subject matter? Or is it simply the years of experience? In the case of Bader Alwazeer, a Bahrain-based photographer, all those things, of course, play a huge part in his profession. However, when it comes to his photography business, Bader’s biggest worth is his wife, Khatoon Nasralla. “She’s my secret weapon behind every shoot,” Bader says. “She’s the one who styles the models, arranges the food, and takes care of all the important details, and I am so lucky to have this weapon with me all the time.” Bader started his photography business shooting product samples for local printing press, and very quickly realised that consumers bought into visuals more than simple text descriptions. “Like anything, you buy with your eyes,” Bader says. “For example I am sure at least 70 per cent of people will not read this interview but the photos WILL get their attention,” he explains. After achieving a BSc in Multimedia Studies in the UK, Bader returned to Bahrain and in 2010, with much support and encouragement from family and friends, he took his passion for photography to a pro level. Being a photographer out of Bahrain, 84

does come with its challenges, as Bader tells us: “The competition is very very high as the Bahrain market is very small, and some clients tend to go for cheaper over quality, so the rates just keep on dropping. “To survive these challenges, first of all we are not limiting our self. We are ready to travel to any other country immediately to do a photo-shoot there,” he continues. “Another way to tackle these challenges is to be good in different types of photography. Everyone in this business will advice you to specialise, I would advise you the other way, especially in Bahrain.” Bader admits that the photography business has its good and bad days, and it’s not the money, but rather his love of creativity that keeps him striving on. His Western-style, or what most would call more mainstream approach, to photography, has landed Bader clients like McDonald’s, Microsoft, Zain Telecom, Costa, Rotana and many more. Taking a trip down memory lane, Bader remembers that it was an Olympis IS-3DLX that made him fall in love with photography, and he gives a special shout out to his sister, Leena. “A special thanks to my sister for buying my first DSLR camera,” he says. “Without her I wouldn’t be a photographer.”

“I don’t like routine. I can’t stand it. In photography there’s no routine. Every shoot is new; a new model, new fashion, new food and a new place. And photography makes you meet interesting people – I love this feeling of freedom in the photography business.”

In Bader’s opinion, a good photographer is an artist, and a creative, dedicated person, not just a businessman holding a camera. It is this strong belief, and a keen interest in high fashion that fuels Bader’s future goals. “I would like to be a well-known international photographer travelling the world with Khatoon, my partner in business and life, and to have our full photography crew to do different assignments for big brands and big fashion magazines,” he says. “I want to shoot for brands like Dior, Burberry, and Chanel, and I’m dreaming of shooting Cara Delevingne one day, as well as editorials for Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar. Hi Basma and Basel! Tell us more about PeripherySHIFTED – the concept and the creative thoughtprocess behind the pieces at the exhibition? The pattern is based on a series of triangles that connect infinitely to create surfaces that have the effect of constant change and variation. So each piece is a oneof-a-kind pattern sequence that has different effects of movement, shift, blur, or shadow. Each work in Periphery-SHIFTED infuses material objects with cultural and historical meaning to challenge the notions of stability, movement, perception and physicality and to explore the possibilities of pattern, material and the effects of light. Periphery-SHIFTED is based on a theme of cosmic perspectives where the formations and variations of the patterns are inspired by star constellations and formations of the night skies. The pieces explore the emergent effects of combining light, pattern, and layers. The series works with the tree-dimensional possibilities of pattern when applied in multiple variations and layers and their interaction with natural and artificial light. Does being professional architects inspire or restrict your more artistic pieces, and how? Our work in architecture and art is very closely connected. As they are both a combination of art and design and they both deal with materials and technology. But since the architecture work includes many other aspects such as sites, clients, and functionality, the Atelier work is free to explore new possibilities of pattern and material independently. 90

However, the work eventually influences our architectural designs and it contributes to our architectural and spatial awareness. Tell us about some of the pieces at the exhibition – the materials used and the time frame it took to put them together? The exhibition includes three main types of objects: the Carving Shadows wall sculpture collection are works that are made by layering patterned paper that result in various forms and effects of blurs and depths. The Galactic Landscapes collection is aluminium panels layered and patterned to depict cosmic landscapes and forces of expansion and shrinkage. And we also have three steel sculptural furniture pieces, Atiq the Ottoman, and Siraj and Wahaj the lamps. These are handmade of steel and can be both sculptures and usable objects. What is the message you’re convening with this exhibition? A big part of our process is the viewer experience so we always try to make works that provoke the imagination of the viewer and allows them to create their own stories and vision around the work. Each exhibition would be based on a theme that allows us to create the works but the final story is for the receiver. What do you hope to achieve from this exhibition? We hope to touch the Bahraini art lovers and connect with them through the work. We have tried to create a space of dream, vision, and imagination, and being in La Fontaine is a perfect opportunity to do that. So we hope that the viewers can look at the pieces and find their unique stories within the pieces. How long have you been working as a duo, and where do you see your artistic partnership taking you in the next five years? We have been working together for about 10 years now and our partnership is a very important part of our work. The process is guided by the interaction between our different perspectives and us. It is difficult to know where it will take us as we are very organic in the process and very fluid in the production of the work but we are certain that we have much more to do and produce. We are continuously developing and experimenting and we enjoy the ambiguity of the future, as it will allow us to do things beyond our expectations. What advice would you give to young budding artists today? Our advice would be to work with passion and be open to experimenting. Often the best things in art come unexpected during a process of playful experimentation with materials and technique, in combination with awareness of the surrounding forces and effects that guide the work and the mind of the artist. Mr. Turner What’s it about:

J.M.W Turner, the great, if eccentric, British painter is brought to the big-screen in a Mike Leigh masterpiece. This film is an exploration of the last quarter century and topsy-turvy life of one of the most intriguing painters in history. Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits, Turner forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies.

Director: Mike Leigh Cast: Timothy Spall, Ruth Sheen, Leslie Manville Why it’s worth watching? It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a film with such a magnificent central role; here, Timothy Spall gives an Oscar-calibre performance, that is, in its entirety, strangely gripping. It is, of course, the richly detailed character of Mr. Turner who shocks, excites, intrigues and captures the audience’s attention. Mike Leigh takes a distinctly original approach to this celeb biopic, showcasing Turner’s life as he travelled, painted, lived with aristocracy, visited brothels, and was even strapped to the mast of a ship so that he could paint a snowstorm. Spall’s way of embracing the ramblings and somewhat odd behaviour that Turner was known for, is refreshingly unstructured and abrasive (which we love!) as he ‘grrrhhhs’ through his scenes, mesmerising viewers into another world. Mr. Turner is funny, fitting, and down right awesome as far as dramatics go – a true monument to a British master – with Leigh and the whole cast demonstrating an unrivalled command of their own craft.

it’s safe to say that hardcore hip-hop followers might just be left disappointed with what’s set to be the Wu’s (as they’re known to fans) final album. The production has been described as “corny” and the hip-hop crew has been called out for using too many samples and “grimy beats” on a 15-track record that many expected to be a classic. With that said, there are a few standout songs on A Better Tomorrow that save the group’s rap reputation. Take Ruckus in B Minor – it captures the raw face of hip hop with a well-orchestrated symphony, as each member bullies their way through the track, spitting “Wu is the way. The Tang is the slang.” This is a rather lyrical album that shows maturity – fitting, as two members; RZA and Raekwon recently put aside their differences and made up. This album captures the gritty New York sound that helped stylize the Wu two decades ago. Will it be a classic for the iconic rap group? We’ll let the fans to decide! 94

Rock or Bust By AC/DC It’s no secret that AC/DC take rock seriously. This new 11-track record is aptly titled Rock or Bust; four songs on the album have “rock” in the title, and they’ve even selected a small Australian town (population 3,000) literally called the Rock to launch their new album. Makes perfect sense to us! So far, we’ve heard the roaring chords of Play Ball, and it sounds exactly like every other AC/DC song – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because, we can guarantee this song will get stuck in your head. It’s hard to believe that this is the first album without founding member, Malcolm Young (Rhythm Guitar), but his nephew, Stevie Young, definitely holds his own and honours his uncle in a powerful way. Bygone Charm Muscat is far from a metropolis; there are very few high-rise blocks, and even the most functional buildings are required to reflect tradition through architecture, with a dome or an arabesque window feature. It’s because of such things like the strict building policies that Muscat, even to this day, has retained a character that’s very different from the region’s other capitals. What we witnessed was an attractive, clean and quirkily uniform city with the most hospitable and friendly people. The sea plays a major part in the city; fishermen in small motorboats are up at the break of dawn for the catch of the day; and cruise ships brings visitors, while goods arrive in containers, to the historic ports of Mutrah and Old Muscat. We loved the abundance of natural light that comes in through the expansive windows, as well as the separate sitting and dining room area, the walk-in closet and the uber luxurious bathroom with Asprey amenities. Relaxation Refined Relaxation is what it’s all about at Al Bustan Palace. The Grand Cherokee SRT is a car with a sinister alter ego. What it sacrifices in offroad capability it replaces with utter lunacy – a no-holdsbarred American muscle car disguised as a family SUV! 108 fact magazine

Despite Jeep’s illustrious off-road history, the Grand Cherokee SRT is really designed as a street machine. Granted, it does have far more ground clearance than your average muscle car, but those shiny alloys and that big front splitter rule it out for anything more extreme than a gravel track, though they do serve to make this car look absolutely superb. In addition, the Selec-Trac all-wheel drive system as featured on the SRT doesn’t have the rock, gravel or mud settings that the standard Grand Cherokee has, but tellingly it does have two settings that the normal one doesn’t have, and those are Sport and Track. Even more tellingly, it also has a very unmistakeable launch control button, featuring an icon based on drag strip starting lights. All signs point to the SRT being built solely for the tarmac, but the real truth is in the name – Street Racing Technology. So how does it fare?

Well, the excitement starts when you push the ignition switch and hear that delicious 6.4l V8 rumble to life. We fully predict that the first journey this car makes whenever someone gets into it for the first time is to a quiet, straight stretch of road, where that launch control will be put to the test. It was definitely the case on this particular review! To give you an idea of what came next, I’ll tell you that the 6.4l V8 puts out 470hp and 624Nm of torque. This means a 0-100km/h of just 4.9 seconds. 4.9! It’s absolutely insane.

That’s faster than the V8 Cayenne GTS. The Range Rover Sport, BMW X5 M and the Mercedes ML 63 AMG all do it in 4.7 seconds, but here’s the rub – the Grand Cherokee SRT costs around half of the cheapest of this premium line-up! There is simply no other sports SUV that gives you this kind of performance for this kind of money. The Jeep doesn’t match the Cayenne in terms of agility – you do feel like you’re in a two-tonne SUV – but having said that the Selec-Trac system does an incredible job of hauling the Grand Cherokee SRT around corners. There is some tyre squeal, but you

can corner and change the direction of this big SUV with amazing agility and accuracy. However, I can’t help but feel that it would have benefitted greatly from a hydraulic suspension that lowered the centre of gravity a couple of inches when you really want to throw it around. Inside, the interior really does the exterior justice. A premium vibe is given off by the abundance of padded leather surfaces, carbon fibre panels with chrome finishing, and even a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter. Aside from the gear shifter, there are also paddle shifters on the steering wheel, further enhancing the car’s performance credentials. Then there’s the impressive list of standard features – you name it, the SRT’s got it: Adaptive cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, in-built hard disc drive, Sat-Nav, air-conditioned seats… the list goes on. A real bonus is the very cool SRT software displayed on the 7-inch TFT infotainment screen. On this, you’ll find gauges for 0-60 and quarter mile times, g-force indicators and more track-based gadgetry that is loads of fun to play with. So, what is the purpose of this vehicle? Is it simply an oversized and overweight muscle car, or is it a viable mean machine for track, street and mud? Well, the truth is that you’d have to take mud out of that last question, but after only a short while driving it, all doubts are dispelled as to this machine’s true purpose. BIC Hosts Another Successful WEC 6 Hours The Bahrain International Cicruit celebrated the closing of yet another successful FIA World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Bahrain race last month. However, Toyota Racing had twice the reason to celebrate after winning the Six Hours of Bahrain and also clinching the FIA World Endurance Drivers’ Championship for Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi. The trio of Alexander Wurz, Stephane Sarrazin and Mike Conway shone brightest under the stars after steering their no. 8 TS040-Hybrid to a fine race win. They claimed the chequered flag nearly a minute ahead of their closest challengers for their maiden triumph of the season. Meanwhile, Toyota teammates Davidson and

Buemi secured this year’s drivers’ title despite only finishing in 11th place at BIC. They suffered some car problems during the first half of the race, but were still able to secure their season’s crown. Their result in Bahrain put the Japanese manufacturers in prime position to seal the FIA World Endurance Manufacturers’ Championship in the WEC’s final round in Brazil.

All-New 2 Series Active Tourer BMW has mounted a direct challenge to Mercedes B Class with this, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, which hit showroom floors in the Gulf last month. utcher Shop & Grill stands out with its friendly staff, tasty and fresh food, and above all the satisfaction of a wholesome meal. Being meat-lovers, we knew we were in for an indulgent meal. With the Regional Chef in town, we were excited to have scrumptious dishes prepared by THE man behind the recipes himself. Little did we know just how delicious this Chef ’s Table dining experience would be… As Chef Nicolas prepares our meal, we walked in to the kitchen area to have a chat with him (the food already smelled inviting!). Intrigued to know the Chef ’s favourite ingredients, we dropped our question: “Truffles, Sakura Cress and Cheese definitely top the list,” he says. “I use high-quality ingredients in all my preparations, as they, by themselves give great value and enhanced flavour to the dishes.” As he spoke, our starters were ready and waiting. There was Chicken Coxinha; crisp balls stuffed with cheese and tender shredded chicken – heavenly is the word for this hearty starter. The Salt and Pepper Calamari was crispy from the outside and soft from the inside - perfect. The Beef Carpaccio was succulent and the addition of capers gave it a zingy kick we’d never

Before we could get over the yummy appetisers, the mains arrived; OMG we saw Beef Fillet steak with Jacket Potato on a plate and our taste buds jumped with excitement! Perfectly cooked, well-seasoned and delectably juicy, this main was a foodie winner. Chef Nicolas enlightened us on his cooking style as we relished the steak: “More than half our menu is grilled using an open flame grill,” he explains. “Grilled meat is served in four different cooking styles; plain, pepper coating, basting and prime rib style. The rest of the menu is cooked by styles like

braising, roasting, slow cooking; I aim to use healthy cooking methods,” he tells us. Next up was the Veal Tenderloin with mushroom in a creamy sauce, YUM! The smokey taste with different types of mushrooms; black, Parisienne and Shiitake, made for a filling, earthy dish! We’re huge fans of mushrooms and this dish was a definite highlight. The Chicken Espetada was specially prepared and presented in a unique style, one which you might expect in an authentic Brazilian restaurant. With tender and tasty chicken pieces and crispy golden potato cubes, this was simply divine. Dessert had a lot to live up to and we sure weren’t left disappointed. Try the mouthwatering Chocolate

Fondant - it’s sinfully good with chocolate sauce oozing out of the spongy cake. Then there’s the mighty Strawberry Cheesecake which was packed with flavour and lovely textures. Chef Nicolas shared his top tips for cooking a great steak: “It’s simple to cook the perfect steak; buy a high-quality steak and cook well, sear it perfectly and leave it to rest after you grill it.” We had a pleasant experience at Butcher Shop & Grill as Chef Nicolas and the super-friendly Restaurant Manager, Tariq, made sure that our tummies were happily full by the end of our meal. The restaurant manager, waiters, and, in particular, Chef Stefano, all walked us through the restaurant making us feel comfortable. We had a sneak peek at the ‘Fiamma Italian Shop’, where you can buy a variety of authentic Italian pastes, sauces, olive oil and vino; It was Monday which is the Italian Night; Serata Italiana, offering a plentiful Italian buffet. The spread has a massive choice of indulgence; name it and you have it. We love the rustic-feel that Fiamma offers; edgy wooden flooring coupled with soft lighting, elegant pillars and cosy seating. Seems like just yesterday that we sat down to put our resolutions for the new year. Now it’s time again to welcome the most festive season and prepare to send off the year with a bang! This little island has a lot to offer when it comes to celebrating the festive month of December. To kick things of, many prominent 5-star hotels across the country throw their own Christmas Tree lighting events, providing fun-filled activities for the entire family. Be sure to keep a look out as most would be lighting their trees on the first week of the month. For the little ones, they can enjoy ginger-bread making classes and other kidsoriented festive activities.

My Christmas Day will be spent with close friends, at a girlfriend’s house. There’ll be bonbons with silly paper hats, stupid jokes and mini toys. There’ll be turkey with all the trimmings, and glasses overflowing with grape juice. My little dog Mai will beg for food at the table. And on my way home, I’ll drive past the trees with their magical red and white fairy lights, thankful that the lovely National Day decorations are left up long enough for me to pretend that they’re really there for Christmas.

So Christmas and the New Year are approaching which means for some a little more alcohol and lots more food which will make you feel lethargic; so what to do? Exercise of course! I don’t want to sound like a killjoy but think about your food over the Christmas period, turkey is fine,v as white meat is good for you but don’t forget the vegetables and if you’re going for the Christmas pudding, mince pies or chocolates do some exercise beforehand.

If you’re going to over indulge get in as much exercise as you can leading up to Christmas the more high intensity the better. Why not try something different like the Cross Island race just before Christmas or now that the weather is so much nicer now long walks with the family. Once again not to sound like a party pooper, but be very carefully with your alcohol, try and drink water in between your alcoholic drinks this should also help with your hangover the next day. Try and stick to your normal exercise routine as much as possible and watch your eating habits. During the holidays people are more likely to snack a little as they’ll be at home watching TV. Stay away from sugary snacks and stick to things like nuts or carrot sticks with hummus and guacamole. Hit the dance floor, open your presents and see the New Year in with a bang! Some amount of planning usually goes in to arranging what we will be up to for the holidays whether we will travel or just stay at home. Sometimes it can be pretty

hard to decide what exactly we should do for any one of the special days. When we keep in mind the most important things in our lives, then planning can become simpler. For most of us the people in our lives are the most important and finding ways for all to enjoy pretty much can be a deciding factor. When you remember childhood festivities, remember the special feeling that comes along with those memories. Create your holiday plans with those feelings in mind. You will be more likely to create something magical. Special days are more about bonding than the actual doing. Remembering this will help bring friends and family closer together. Describe your ideal day off

I’ve loved horses since I was a child, so I’d go riding early before the rest of the island wakes up, followed by a delicious and leisurely breakfast in the conservatory at Café Amsterdam. Next on the agenda would be a vistit to an exhibition at the National Museum. Family and friends are very important to me, so I’d enjoy lunch with a large and diverse group, dining al fresco in the garden at La Vinoteca Barcelona, which is a fabulous place to relax. The perfect day would finish with a memorable Spring of Culture event; I lived in Beirut for a number of years but I got to see Fairuz in Bahrain.
