POETRY OF COLOURS

Poetry fans, sharpen your ears as Bahrain Writers’ Circle (BWC) sets the stage for its annual poetry festival.

The BWC, probably the biggest group of international and local writers in Bahrain, is all set to host the 11th edition of its yearly poetry festival, Colours of Life. The event will be held on April 20, from 7pm to 8.30 pm, at #10 room at the British Club in Um Al Hassam.

The Colours of Life 2024 edition will feature more than 20 poets of various nationalities, including Canadian, Indian, British and more. The theme is in the name, as all poems are attributed to a certain colour. A love poem, for example, could be denoted by the colour red and a poem about a pearl, white, etc. It is also possibly the only poetry festival on the island that includes musical and visual accompaniments.

The event, organised by The Second Circle (a sister group of the BWC), was the brainchild of David Hollywood, who was the founder of both the festival and the poetry circle.

This year’s programme will be led by BWC member, Kaav Ranj, a writer and artist who has performed her poems across the Middle East and India. Having shared the stage with the likes of Javed Akhtar, Gulzar, Sarah Kay and more, she has also taught poetry and performance to more than 200 students across the world since 2020.

"Poetry has a way of bringing the best out of people and, at Colours of Life, we’re lucky to witness performances that take visual art into account as well, leaving us with a show that truly holds space for performers to express themselves," said Kaav.

The BWC is a volunteer group that was established in 2011 by Robin Barratt, a best-selling author of true crime. It welcomes writers of all levels and aims to create an encouraging environment to nurture creativity, improve their craft and provide an opportunity to network. Its two sub-groups: The Second Circle, a poetry group, and the Creative Writers’ Workshop, which explores the craft of writing, hold monthly virtual meetings on the business of writing and publishing.

Entrance to the festival is free and open to all on a first come, first served basis. ✤

FURRY FRIENDS WELCOME

What’s even better is when you can take them with you to socialise, be it a catch up in a café, a picnic at the park or a run around on the beach. We’ve rounded up some of the best hotspots on the island that welcome both you and your pets, as well as a few simple tips and areas of pet etiquette to follow when you’re out with them. So, leash up, grab a toy and head to the great outdoors to enjoy quality time with your pooch (or other leashed pet) by your side!

PET ETIQUETTE IN CAFÉS

Café culture has become extremely popular in the Kingdom and there are plenty of pet-friendly outlets that offer an inclusive and safe space for both you and your doggos. Pet etiquette in cafés revolves around respect, responsibility and consideration for others. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy quality time with your furry friend while encouraging a positive atmosphere for everyone around you.

Respect the Rules:

First and foremost, before heading out take a moment to review the establishment's pet policy. Some cafés may have designated outdoor seating areas or specific guidelines regarding pet behaviour. Call ahead or do a quick recce beforehand.

Maintain Control of Your Pet

Just like humans, pets can have their moments of excitement but it's important to make sure they remain well-behaved. Keep them on a leash or harness and discourage excessive barking or disruptive behaviour. Bringing along a favourite toy or treat can help keep them occupied and content.

Mind Your Space

While your furry companion may be the apple of your eye, be mindful that not everyone will share the same sentiment. Respect others’ personal space and be conscious of any aversions fellow

guests may have to animals. Keep your pet close to you and avoid encroaching on neighbouring tables and if someone seems uneasy around your pet, consider moving to a quieter area.

Be Aware of Your Pet’s Needs

Before you head out, ensure your pets are well-fed and hydrated. Avoid feeding them at the table as this can be unsanitary. Instead carry treats for rewarding good behaviour and a small water bowl with you in case your dog gets thirsty. ✤

Pet Friendly Cafés

Most establishments only allow pets in the outdoor areas, not inside the café or restaurant. It’s advisable to call beforehand to double-check their pet policies.

EXPLORING THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Planning a day out with your pooch? Whether hitting the beach or picnicking in the park, an outing with your furry friends makes it even more special. Bahrain has plenty of exciting spots to enjoy a fun beach or park day. Follow these paw-some tips to keep your pets safe and comfortable.

Pack the Essentials: Before heading out, remember to take some basic items, such as plenty of fresh water to keep them hydrated, a collapsible bowl for easy drinking and bin bags for cleanup. Don’t forget a life jacket for protection and a towel to dry them off if they decide to go for a swim.

Beware of Loose/Stray Dogs: While you may have your pet under control, not all dogs at the beach or park are on their best behaviour. Be cautious of loose or aggressive, stray dogs and, if necessary, move to a different area to avoid potential conflicts.

Use a Long Leash: Opt for a long leash to give your pet some freedom to explore while still maintaining control. An equine lead rein can be handy for allowing your pet to roam freely within a safe distance, while keeping them within reach.

Beware of Hot Sand: The sand can heat up quickly under the sun, potentially burning your pet's sensitive paw pads. Test the temperature of the sand with the back of your hand (if you can’t stand the heat for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog) before allowing your pet to walk on it and consider bringing along booties for extra protection.

Provide Shade and Water: Keep an eye out for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling or lethargy. Make sure there's a shaded area where your pet can take a break and cool down. Bring along an umbrella or portable shade tent and pack plenty of fresh water to keep them hydrated.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen: Just like humans, pets can get sunburnt too, especially short-haired breeds or recently shaved dogs. Apply pet-safe sunscreen (minimum SPF of 30), paying extra attention to exposed areas like their nose, ears and paws.

Rinse Off: After some fun in the sun, give your pet a thorough rinse with clean, fresh water to remove any salt, sand or other debris from their coat. This will help prevent irritation and keep their skin and fur healthy.

Maintain Cleanliness: Last but not least, it's crucial to clean up after your pet and take responsibility for any mess they may make. Bring along poop bags to pick up waste and throw them in the designated bins. ✤

THE LATEST FROM ONE OF THE GREATEST

FACT spent the day in the new BMW X2, a subcompact crossover making waves in the premium SUV market.

• ISLAND RIDES
ISLAND RIDES •

BMW have long established themselves as top contenders in the high-end SUV segment, with various models proving popular throughout the world. However, it is their smallest SUV offering that’s currently receiving much of the attention. This month, thanks to the team at Euro Motors, FACT got behind the wheel of the brand’s new subcompact luxury crossover SUV, the BMW X2. Although this freshly updated model comes in allelectric options, it was the petrol-powered sDrive 18d version that we were lucky enough to experience.

Dynamic Exterior Design

Our first impression of the new X2 was that it is a sportier version of the X1, albeit with its own personality and style.

In the X2, the master crafters at BMW have managed to effortlessly combine the sturdy look and stance of a compact SUV with the athletic and attractive flair of a coupé.

Starting at the model-specific, upright front end, we found the shapely hood, complete with BMW badge, to bestow the X2 with a confident look. We also appreciated the state-of-the-art signature lighting, with the eye-catching matrix LED design. These impressive lights flank an almost hexagonal, pearl-gloss-chrome kidney grille, with all elements working together to create a beautiful face.

Shifting our attention to the sides, we immediately took note of the dynamically stretched body lines flowing from bonnet to boot. This feature, along with the sloping roofline, enhances the sleek and tight feel of this modern SUV. The 19-inch alloy wheels, complete with a stylish V-spoke design, are fitted under prominently flared wheel arches that underscore the vehicle’s muscular shoulders.

Focussing on the back end, the Gurney-style spoiler and eyecatching rear apron first grabbed our attention – features we felt further enhance the sporty prowess of the X2. We also agreed that the novel tail lights, showcasing dazzling geometric patterns, finish off the rear with yet another touch of class.

Premium Interior

Once inside the SUV, we instantly recognised the upmarket ambience exuded by the cabin, with sporty touches sprinkled throughout.

Firstly, the exceptionally comfy, multi-functional and adjustable front seats with memory function provide a commanding view of the road ahead and the perfect point from which to appreciate the magnificence of the X2’s interior. No matter where our eyes rested, they were only greeted by high-end materials and stunning finishes. Despite being a subcompact SUV, the new X2 provides a surprising amount of headroom and general space in both the front and the rear. A panoramic sunroof lets in an abundance of natural light, adding to the roomy feel of the vehicle. The luggage compartment provides 560 litres of storage, a capacity increased to 1,470 litres with the rear seats folded flat. This ensures the X2 is practical for both long-distance trips and daily use. The tailgate itself opens by pressing the rear BMW badge.

Outstanding Tech & Infotainment

As picture-perfect as the new X2 is both inside and out, it was the SUV’s included tech that proved to be the most impressive.

The X2 presents the new BMW Operating System 9 and BMW Digital Premium. Additionally, we discovered the latest version of the BMW iDrive display and control system features QuickSelect rapid-access tech. This means super-fast processing speeds.

Packaged with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Personal Assistant, the system has been designed to operate using the touchscreen and natural language.

We admired how the slender instrument panel housing the splitscreen BMW Curved Display, is joined by a ‘floating’ armrest with integral control panel. We also agreed that the centre console is amongst the best designs we have encountered, with everything perfectly placed for optimum convenience.

The BMW Operating System 9 also paves the way for a highly customisable selection of additional services, including BMW Digital Premium, allowing customers to enjoy in-car use of all the apps available in the Kingdom.

As involved as this system may sound, we found it pretty easy to navigate and soon had a solid grasp on much of what this superior setup had to offer.

Other must-mention tech features of our test-drive model included the standard smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a superb Harman Kardon sound system and a smartphone tray with indirect illumination and wireless charging.

Power, Performance & Safety

As one would expect from a BMW, engaging the ignition of our X2 sDrive 18d was a satisfying moment. The capable four-cylinder, BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine not only delivers the right sounds but a max output of 150hp and a max torque of 360Nm. When out on the tarmac, this powerful engine coupled with a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch meant a responsive and sporty driving experience.

Although accelerating off the mark was slightly slower than expected, we discovered that once the car was up to speed, it answered the request for more power far quicker. Even at higher speeds, we established that the handling and braking were reliable and sharp.

Once we shifted the car into Sports Mode, the acceleration became

far more responsive and, despite the handling loosening up slightly, we always felt in complete control of the driving experience. Adding to the sense of security in the X2 is the range of standard safety and driver assistance systems. These include the latest Front Collision Warning system, Cruise Control with brake function, Speed Limit Info, Lane Departure Warning with lane return and Parking Assistance, including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant. Many additional options are available upon request.

Our Verdict

In the X2, BMW have created yet another outstanding SUV. The interior and exterior designs, the provided tech and safety systems and the responsive performance, all showcase the brand's exceptional design and construction capabilities. ✤

WHEN POWER MEETS LUXURY

FACT spent the day in the new HONGQI HS3, a deluxe mid-size SUV that delivers a level of tech, luxury and refinement usually reserved for cars with a much higher price tag.

• BEHIND THE WHEEL

This month, thanks to the team at Zayani Motors, FACT got behind the wheel of the new HONGQI HS3.

Having recently experienced two of this Chinese luxury car marque’s saloons, the H9 and the Ousado, plus the outstanding HS5 Deluxe 4WD SUV, we had high expectations for the brand’s latest release.

Bold & Elegant Exterior

We were taken by surprise the first time we laid eyes on a HONGQI in 2022. We were not expecting the level of craftsmanship and luxury we experienced. However, when approaching our fourth HONGQI test-drive model, we immediately appreciated the now familiar design concept of the HONGQI family DNA, along with the novel ‘Wings of HONGQI’ greeting lights, designed to create the effect of an eagle taking flight.

In the HS3, the brand has continued its winning formula of bold design concepts combined with elegant touches. From head-on, this striking SUV exudes athleticism and power while maintaining an air of refined grace.

As with all the other HONGQIs we’ve experienced, the HS3 showcases a sculpted bonnet complemented by the red HONGQI logo line at its front and centre that continues down the middle of the grille.

The upscale grille is eye-catching and exhibits a geometric design for optimal air intake. Enhancing the SUV’s aggressive-looking face are split-design headlights and well-positioned fog lamps.

Focussing on the flanks, we appreciated the aesthetically pleasing convex and concave surfaces that add to the aerodynamic nature of this sturdy SUV. Sleek yet pronounced wheel arches house stylish 20-inch wheels featuring a unique rim design, while power-folding and movable side mirrors with integrated turn signals further enhance the classy nature of the car.

At the back end, the well-designed tail lights frame a boxy yet modern-looking rear, with a single LED light running the full width of the vehicle, providing a touch of sporty appeal. The neatly designed rear bumper and exhaust system further add to the handsome hind quarters.

Timeless Interior

We discovered the luxurious nature of the new HS3’s exterior to flow effortlessly into the interior, where we were greeted by a high level of opulence.

Slipping into the uber comfy, ventilated and multi-adjustable front seating of HONGQI’s new SUV, we had the perfect position to take in the upmarket interior.

Along with the high-end materials used throughout the vehicle, the HS3 features 253 ambient interior lighting options, allowing us to customise the mood of the internal environment. During the heat of the day, the dual-zone climate control and panoramic sunroof ensure plenty of cool air and natural light.

The centre console and gear controller deserve a special mention, thanks to their stylish look, expensive feel and convenient design.

fact magazine 55
BEHIND THE WHEEL •

As the day progressed, the more we inspected the cabin, the more impressed we became with every little detail and finish. It is obvious HONGQI remains steadfast in its commitment to creating beautiful vehicles with first-class interiors. Furthermore, the abundance of space on offer throughout the SUV meant plenty of head, shoulder and leg room in both the front and the back.

Advanced Infotainment & Tech

We discovered the infotainment system of the new HS3 to be both clean and minimalistic. The system comprises one 12.6-inch LCD screen and one 12.3-inch LCD instrument display.

Not only did we find the system beautifully integrated into the HS3’s cockpit, but intuitive and easy to navigate, providing us with simple access to the vehicle’s extensive range of functions. A 10-speaker Bose Centrepoint surround sound system is a part of the setup, amongst several other entertainment amenities. Further fancy features of our test drive model included wireless phone charging, an air quality sensor, a head-up display and a multi-function steering wheel with audio, Bluetooth switch, MID select and voice command.

Power, Performance & Safety

Despite the impressive nature of all aspects of this luxury SUV’s exterior and interior designs, it was its on-road performance that secured our attention. Housing a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, Turbo Charged Direct Injection Engine, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the new HS3 is no slouch on the tarmac.

Delivering 248hp and 380Nm of torque, this new HONGQI accelerates from 0-100 km/h in a respectable 6.9 seconds. Every time we applied pressure to the right pedal, the car responded, adding plenty of enjoyment to the driving experience.

Additionally, the four-wheel drive system, combined with the five selectable driving modes, ensures the best possible performance on any surface and in all conditions. We found the Sport Plus mode especially pleasing, adding extra verve to the SUV’s performance.

To ensure the well-being of all occupants, HONGQI have included an extensive range of safety and driver assistance features in the new HS3. These include Lane Departure Warning, Autonomous

Our Verdict

HONGQI seems to be improving with every new premium car model they produce. If the brand continues along its current trajectory, it may soon gain the popularity of other, more established, elite brands. ✤

Holding two different and highly demanding positions, how do you juggle your two roles?

This certainly calls for effective time management, prioritisation and delegation. I maintain a structured schedule, allocating specific blocks of time for each role's responsibilities. Clear communication with my teams is crucial, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities. Delegation plays a vital role in managing workload efficiently, empowering capable individuals to handle tasks effectively. Additionally, I leverage technology and automation tools to streamline processes and increase productivity. Regular self-assessment and reflection help me identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments. Ultimately, it's about maintaining balance, staying organised and focussing on strategic goals to excel in both positions.

With an illustrious career and more than two decades of experience in the real estate industry, what are your views on Bahrain's burgeoning property landscape?

During these two decades and possibly longer, I have witnessed Bahrain's property landscape undergo remarkable growth and transformation. The country's strategic location, favourable investment climate and government initiatives have attracted both local and international investors. Bahrain's flourishing property market presents exciting opportunities for developers, investors and homeowners alike. With a focus on sustainable development, innovative designs and modern infrastructure, Bahrain continues to enhance its appeal as a vibrant real estate destination. However, careful market analysis, adapting to evolving customer preferences and maintaining regulatory oversight are crucial for sustainable growth and long-term success in this dynamic and competitive landscape.

What advice would you give to someone looking to invest in real estate in Bahrain?

My advice would be to conduct thorough market research

and due diligence. Understand the local market dynamics, trends and regulatory framework. Seek expert guidance from reputable real estate agents and consult with financial advisors. Consider factors such as location, infrastructure, rental demand and potential for capital appreciation. Diversify your investment portfolio to mitigate risks. Additionally, explore financing options and calculate projected returns and risks. Finally, be patient and take a long-term perspective. Real estate investments require careful planning and a comprehensive understanding of the market to make informed decisions and maximise returns.

A penthouse or a villa – which would you choose and why?

In Bahrain, I would go for a villa from September to April and a penthouse from May to August. Alternatively, choosing between a penthouse and a villa depends on personal preferences, lifestyle and investment goals. A penthouse offers luxurious urban living with stunning views, convenience and amenities. It suits individuals seeking a vibrant city lifestyle and easy access to amenities. On the other hand, a villa provides spaciousness, privacy and the opportunity for customisation. It appeals to those who value a serene environment, outdoor space and a sense of exclusivity. Both options can be attractive investments, with penthouses offering potential for rental income and capital appreciation, while villas offer long-term value and potential for expansion. Ultimately, the choice depends on individual preferences and priorities.

Name three things that are on your bucket list?

Mainly, I always consider destinations around the world as my main description for my bucket list. So, my first real ‘thing’ on my bucket list would be to travel the world. The second would be to be an author (which I am hoping to tick off soon) and the third is to sell all the property at Tilal residences. And we have great launch deals for you and the family. So, please take advantage and contact me on 3944 4344 for more details. ✤

Batool Redha

Marketing Manager of Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour and SUSHISAMBA

From Harrods in London to Conrad in Manama. How has the transition been from retail to hospitality?

Retail and hospitality share many skills, such as customer service, teamwork and multitasking. However, hospitality does have its unique needs. To navigate this transition, I took stock of my existing skills and identified what I needed to learn. I also considered what area of hospitality most appealed to me – marketing has always been a passion and I asked myself would I thrive working with food and beverage, entertainment or recreation? I set a specific marketing goal

for myself during this shift and weighed in on whether I wanted to join a large hotel chain or a boutique property, all the while developing my expertise in marketing. Looking back, I can confidently say the transition has been surprisingly smooth.

You’re the marketing manager for both the hotel and SUSHISAMBA. What’s the most challenging part of managing two brands? Juggling two brands is like walking a tightrope. You need to make sure your messaging is distinct enough that customers don't get confused. It's all about

resource allocation to ensure each brand thrives in its own lane.

What do your weekends or days off in Bahrain look like?

Trading saddles for serenity – pregnancy has definitely shifted my weekends from high octane to zen mode. These days I'm all about indulging in some serious me-time. Whether it's browsing shops at a leisurely pace, treating myself to a spa day or simply basking in the quiet joy of my own company; it's pure bliss. Gone are the days of being glued to the stables – hello relaxation revolution!

PASSION ON A PLATE

The Executive Chef of Trader Vic's, Marwan Slim, shares his gastronomic journey, from food inspiration and menu development to peculiar guest requests!

Your culinary journey has extended for more than two decades. What initially ignited your passion for becoming a chef and how do you sustain that drive after such a long time? Throughout my career, the countless individuals I've

encountered in the kitchen have continuously inspired me. As a child, observing my parents cook ignited a desire within me to join them, especially during those cherished weekend moments. I dived into the world of cooking through the pages

of renowned culinary books like Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck Cookbook. Although I knew it was beyond my reach, the allure was undeniable, and so I practiced and experimented, conjuring up delectable creations for my friends. Yet, my hunger for knowledge persisted. So, I enrolled in culinary school, forever altering my path.

The true catalyst for enduring inspiration lies in passion. To be fervent about one's craft means to deeply love what one does. As the well-known adage goes: "Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." Possessing an unwavering enthusiasm for food is the key ingredient to becoming a successful chef.

As part of a global chain, how do you infuse your personal touch into the dishes you prepare? Are you actively involved in crafting the menu?

When it comes to the dishes I create, my aim is to maintain simplicity. I strive to utilise fresh ingredients and adorn each plate with edible garnishes that boast vibrant colours. As for my involvement in menu development, I am always ready to contribute, particularly during special occasions such as the Holy Month of Ramadan, Eid al Fitr, Eid al Adha, Christmas and New Year. Additionally, I am more than willing to accommodate special requests from our valued customers.

Could you share the most amusing or peculiar request you have ever received from a guest?

Amidst the plethora of unique and quirky orders, our ultimate goal is to bring joy to our guests. For instance, one memorable occasion involved a guest requesting fried calamari with no oil whatsoever. Another time, a customer desired grilled salmon topped with cheddar cheese. We even had a guest ask us to cook smoked salmon as if it were raw. One particularly amusing request was for a ‘well-done’ Saku Tuna, prompting a gentle explanation that it couldn't quite be prepared in that manner. And then there was the time when a guest ordered Wok Lobster but specified a preference for a male lobster over a female one.

What dish bears your personal touch and why has it gained such popularity?

My signature dish, the Prime Tomahawk Steak, has garnered immense acclaim for its distinctive flavours. It begins with a carefully seasoned blend of freshly ground spices, complemented by a luscious coating of organic, garden-fresh herb compound butter. The secret to perfecting this cowboy ribeye steak, or tomahawk, lies in searing it over high heat on the grill, followed by smoking it in a Chinese oven over a roaring wood flame and finally finishing it in the oven. After a brief rest, the meat is served alongside a zesty lemon, grilled garlic herb vegetables, corn on the cob, homemade steak fries and a tantalising addition of roasted bone marrow. And to top it all off, a sunny-side-up egg crowns this masterpiece. The harmonious combination of flavours and textures in this dish has undeniably captivated the palates of many. ✤

FLAVOURS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

Fernanda Langhammer headed to Palma, one of the newest eateries in town, which offers comfort food with a twist.

• NEW IN TOWN
NEW IN TOWN •

The latest destination on the island creating a lot of buzz is, without a doubt, the recently opened Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. The first Raffles Hotel opened in Singapore in 1887 and has since been the place to go, from royalty and class-A celebrities to people just visiting for an Instagram click – a reference for ultimate luxury and personalisation. The Raffles brand is known worldwide for embracing local culture, meaning no two properties are the same. Each Raffles hotel or resort has its own personality with the distinct signature of incredible sophistication, impeccably trained staff and butler service.

And it’s no different in Bahrain. Stepping into the lobby is like entering an entirely new universe. The crisp white walls in patterned Arab designs contrast with the greenery of various vases carefully distributed in the space alongside scattered black accents, such as the eye-catching fountain in the centre of this ample, welcoming area. The natural light coming from the ceiling creates a whimsical atmosphere. Beauty for the eyes that puts you in relaxing mode – an elegant retreat where simplicity meets awe-inspiring décor elements. It was not my first visit, but I have to say that the impeccable interiors get me every time. Everything is well-thought-out and flawless for a timeless style. Not that I would need an excuse to keep coming back but, this time, I had a culinary mission: to experience Palma’s menu. Offering Mediterranean cuisine with a local twist, the restaurant follows the same laid-back sophistication seen throughout the property. White, gold and teal are the predominant shades in the décor, with crystal chandeliers following the same colour scheme. The seating arrangement is a mix of chairs and sofas surrounding round and square tables, painted in tones of sand and grey with pots of plants adding refreshing greenery.

The restaurant concept is a family-sharing style with an elevated experience of kitchen-to-table curation. The organic white plates caught my attention as they let the main component – the food – stand out. The ingredients are sourced from local farms, as sustainability and freshness are key elements in Raffles’ values. A highlight goes to the goat cheese, created exclusively for Palma. We started the dining feast with a basket of freshly baked bread, from sourdough with its distinctive tangy flavour to soft rolls, on which we spread the restaurant’s unique butter with sumac – a traditional Middle Eastern spice. Its deep red colour adds a sour taste, like lemon, but with an earthier note. Absolutely delicious!

The starters were the Lemon Thyme Infused Slow Roasted Beetroot Salad and Kibbeh Mashwiya. I know beetroot is a vegetable many dislike, but I adore it. Its sweet and soil-like zest is well balanced with green leaves, the crunchiness of sunflower seeds and small pieces of pumpkin chips working well with the star of the plate: goat cheese mousse. The balsamic dressing is made with watermelon juice and sour mango emulsion that expands the flavours of the fresh ingredients. I added all the elements for one perfect mouthful that delivered an explosion on my tongue, mixing textures and different levels of complexity. The kibbeh is made with minced lamb with a hint of local spices, pine nuts and raisins to lift the flavours. It has the perfect ratio of dough and filling, and the capsicum coulis and garlic yoghurt boost the

• NEW IN TOWN

taste experience – a traditional dish with an original touch. It was time for the mains. First, we had Samak Chermoula, fried seabream in a bed of lemon butter sauce mixed with charcoal dust and a finely chopped mix of parsley and capsicum placed between the fish and the sauce. The bream was perfectly cooked and the black sauce added a visual effect to the dish – a pleasant surprise. The other plate, and my favourite, was the Black Seabass with Chinese artichoke, Pedron pepper and crustacean bisque. The fish was flaky and the smokiness of the bisque (made with grilled lobster and tomato base) added a salty contrast to the natural sweetness of the bass, a perfect combination. Last but not least, the 36-Hour Braised Lamb with garden roots such as carrots and sweet potatoes accompanied by Wild Mushroom Frikkeh Risotto. The meat was full of spices on the outside with a melting-from-the-bone interior with juicy natural flavours. Frikkeh’s origins trace back to ancient Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. It is grain made from young durum wheat, which is roasted and then polished to remove the shells. It has a very interesting texture, and its mild flavour allowed the mushrooms' pungency to come alive.

After the savoury feast, it was time to please our sweet tooth with the signature creations from Chef Yazid Ichemrahen, World Pastry Champion. We had the 100% Vanille, a sleek-looking dessert

layered with a base of biscuit noisette (ground hazelnut), on top of this, a thin gianduja paste, then a thick vanilla cream (where you can spot loads of black seeds) covered with a thin vanilla enrobage (a sugar- and chocolate-based coating for confections). The name says it all: it is a vanilla concoction. The smell hit our nostrils before we tasted it, and the intense flavour was well balanced with the other ingredients’ lightness. I can say that it was the most perfect vanilla bite I ever had in my life. The other dessert was the Grand Cru Café. This one played with our taste buds; the different textures have a big role here. The coffee cloud, as one of my dining companions described it, was composed of a fine streusel (a more floury crumb), praline, iced coffee, caramel and caramelised hazelnut. You have to eat it as a spoonful, and the ingredients dance in your mouth; it gives a sensation that I can only recommend trying as the best way to describe it. Palma should be your next dining destination if you fancy food created with local and fresh ingredients that elevate Mediterranean staples and a selection of star desserts. ✤

A CULINARY THEATRE

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT
Indulge in an immersive dining adventure for all senses with Le Petit Chef, as Fernanda Langhammer experienced at Downtown Rotana’s Teatro restaurant.
CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

Going out for dinner is always exciting, mainly when you have something to commemorate. Our party of four went to Teatro at Downtown Rotana to celebrate my son’s birthday. However, what Teatro is offering is an unparalleled experience that will transform any night into a special occasion. The fun Le Petit Chef is a dinner show available in more than 61 locations worldwide, and it has arrived in Bahrain. Teatro is located on the fourth floor, and right after stepping out of the lift, we were welcomed with a big backdrop display where we took fun pictures with food-related props. It was such a great way to put us in the mood for what was going to happen next. The beautiful mezzanine restaurant now has six unique tables where the dining journey happens. A high-quality projector placed on the ceiling transforms the tables into a big screen where the animation is played. Our entourage had two curious little eightyear-olds, who couldn’t wait for the spectacle to start.

We were asked to arrive 30 minutes before to get ourselves prepared. We received a few instructions, such as keeping the plate perfectly centralised in the light and the white tablecloth as flat as possible. The lovely Loubna, our waitress for the night, introduced herself and took our drinks orders. In no time, the music started and it was showtime!

The entertaining performance began with a quick presentation from Le Petit Chef, the smallest chef in the world measuring only six centimetres. The duration of the four-course meal journey is approximately two hours and there is a unique film for each dish.

As soon as the animation featuring the adventures of Le Petit Chef to prepare the dish – suffering hilarious misfortune at times – finishes, the actual plate with the wonderfully cooked food appears on the table, what an amusing way of eating!

FIRST ACT

The little chef started working on our first course of the night, Bouillabaisse, a traditional Provençal fish soup originating from the port city of Marseille. As you can imagine, the entertaining short movie takes place on the ocean, where he deals with sea creatures in a fantastic animation.

Made with prawns, crab, fish, octopus, clams and mussels, this dish is a classic staple in French cuisine. My dining companion said it had a spot-on ocean flavour, not overpowering, and the bisque itself was creamy, with the seafood cooked to perfection. A slice of crunchy baguette with saffron aioli accompanied the soup.

I opted for the vegetarian menu (even though the animation shows Le Petit Chef preparing iconic French dishes, you can choose a menu according to your diet). I had the cream of mushroom soup made with wild types of fungi; it had a distinct earthy tone and perfect creamy consistency. There is also a kids’ menu, and they were served a smooth sweet potato soup with coconut foam, a great option to please their young palates.

SECOND ACT

This was everyone’s favourite – most definitely the funniest one. Poor Le Petit Chef is carefully harvesting the ingredients for our salad in his garden when he needs to handle an intrusive mole… I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I have to say that it doesn’t end that well. Our burrata with gazpacho dressing was a bit all over

fact magazine 80
• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

the place as a result of this disturbance.

The refreshing salad was composed of tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, olives and arugula, with burrata as the main character. When we cut it, the white, chewy ball leaked a perfect creamy filling. The sweet, rich interior was runny, yet it had the expected distinctive curds, an absolute winner with its fresh and delicate flavour. The kids enjoyed a comforting mac and cheese that they absolutely loved.

THIRD ACT

It was time for the main course and, if the previous animation was the funniest, this was the one that really played with all our senses.

While Le Petit Chef was grilling Le Boeuf, a USDA tenderloin beef cut, to the guests’ preferences, a smoky scent invaded the room. It was as if we could literally smell what was being cooked in the show playing in front of our eyes. But the experience didn’t end there; an alarm blasted and plates with glass domes entered the room. When they were lifted, a cloud of smoke escaped, giving us a sense of magic.

Not only did a medium-rare piece of meat appear on the plate, but also delightfully grilled vegetables. My companion couldn’t stop complimenting the steak. It had a warm red centre oozing with juiciness and tenderness with great natural flavour, slightly charred on the outside. He tried the accompanying demi-glace sauce, but the meat had such an excellent quality that it was unnecessary to add anything else.

The vegetables included baby potatoes, asparagus, mixed carrots, broccoli and cherry tomatoes, all grilled to a distinct charred flavour. Mine and the kids’ plates came with a vegetarian burger (originally chicken for the kids, but these are non-meat eaters) that truly embraced the grilling experience.

FOURTH ACT

After having our appetites taken care of, Le Petit Chef embarked on a journey to prepare our dessert: Crème Brûlée. The creamy custard has traditional burnt sugar on top that Ajay, one of the maestros of the night, created with his cooking torch at our table to add its iconic crunchy top layer.

The beautiful vanilla dessert was paired with strawberry ice cream and fresh berries. It was one of the best we ever had –everyone’s favourite dish of this incredible night.

LAST ACT

The dining experience ended with fireworks at our tables, but as we were there for a special occasion, the screening changed into a cupcake celebration and a special Happy Birthday message from the little chef. I have to say that the kids’ reactions to each misadventure of Le Petit Chef were the best part – such a memorable night that will be remembered for years to come.

Now you know where to head if you are looking for a dining experience that will transport you to a universe of storytelling and great food. Teatro is playing Le Petit Chef daily and, during Ramadan, every Tuesday and Friday from 7pm. So, don’t miss the chance to book your table. ✤

AUTHENTIC GREEK DELIGHTS

Apple Sharma enjoyed Mediterranean culinary magic at the InterContinental Bahrain, where the Rigani concept brings the vibrant flavours of Greek cuisine to life.

• DINING DELIGHT
DINING DELIGHT •

Traditional Mediterranean food is renowned for its health benefits due to its antioxidant-rich ingredients – one of the many reasons to enjoy this celebrated diet. So, I was very much looking forward to experiencing Rigani – a Greek concept at the InterContinental Bahrain, served in a charming setting on the terrace of Selections restaurant.

On arrival, we were warmly greeted by the Restaurant Manager, Nabil Ben, who introduced us to Rigani, informing us that it offers both a degustation and an à la carte menu, curated by Greek Chef Parisis Grigoriardis.

Every evening, the Selections Terrace is transformed into a miniGreek haven, complemented by authentic décor and traditional music. Stepping outside, you are immediately transported to the Mediterranean, complete with white and grey furniture accented by blue table mats, evoking the colours of the Greek flag. Large wicker lamps hang from the ceiling, casting a warm glow over the space, creating an intimate and cosy ambience.

We began our culinary adventure with a generous selection of cold starters, including the classic Tzatziki, a creamy yogurt sauce with cucumber and fresh garlic. This is one of my alltime favourites and I can eat it till the cows come home. You just can’t beat the simple yet delicious garlicky flavours that pair so perfectly with warm pita bread. The rich and flavourful Melitzanosalata, a roasted eggplant dip with feta cheese, tasted very much like the Middle Eastern baba ganoush minus the tahini, while the Tvrokalteri, a feta cheese dip with oven roasted green and capsicum chilli was deliciously creamy.

The Skordalia, a velvety potato and garlic dip, traditionally eaten during religious fasting periods, was a hearty and comforting dish and the Taramasalata, a fish roe dip, was light and refreshing. The classic Horiaitiki Greek salad, bursting with freshness and colour, transported us to lazy afternoons at seaside tavernas. Transitioning to hot appetisers, we indulged in the crispy delights of Spanakopita, where homemade crusty filo pastry enveloped a luscious filling of spinach, herbs and feta cheese. The chef's live demonstration of rolling out the dough added a touch of authenticity as he explained that this was the same process that most Greek grandmothers use.

The Keftedakia, Greek meatballs served with tzatziki dip, much like the light and crispy Zucchini and Eggplant Fritters, were tasty little nuggets that went down a treat. Meanwhile, the Lahanodolmades, tender cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and minced meat bathed in a luscious avgolemono (egg and lemon) sauce, offered a comforting embrace with every bite. Another simple yet soul-satisfying dish was the Fasolada – a rustic and delicious white bean soup that warmed our hearts with each spoonful.

The main courses were a celebration of tradition, with each dish paying homage to the rich flavours found across the Greek islands. The feast included Arni Gastras, Patates, Ladorigani – the chef’s signature of slow-cooked braised lamb shank with potatoes and oregano. A triumph of a dish, the shank sat majestically on a generous serving of roast potatoes smothered in the most deliciously rich and velvety gravy. The juicy, tender meat fell off the bone and into the bowlful of the jus that had

a very distinct flavour imparted by the cooked stock, olive oil, oregano and mustard.

The Papoutsakia, derived from the Greek word for ‘little shoe’, was another unique delicacy presented in its most humble form. A hearty dish of halved eggplants stuffed with spiced ground meat and tomato sauce, topped with béchamel and cheese, it looked like a deconstructed moussaka and had a similarly comforting taste. More meaty goodness ensued with the Sofrito – tender and flavourful beef escalope with garlic and parsley sauce, served with mashed potatoes.

Continuing down the path of familiar Greek-Italian flavour profiles, we were presented with the Pastichio – a Greek version of lasagna – layered bucatini pasta bake with spiced meat ragu and tomato sauce. Next up was the Kotopoulo Youvetsi, a chicken drum stick casserole with orzo pasta, herbs, tomato sauce and goat’s cheese, and Garides Makaronia, spaghetti with shrimps in traditional tomato sauce – all offering a delightful combination of flavours.

We finished the carnivore run of the menu with Greek Kebbab, flavoured with cinnamon and capsicum paste and served with pita bread. Rounding off the feast was a lovely veggie dish, Gemista, a baked stuffed tomato with rice and a medley of herbs. Alas, we spoke too soon! Although bursting at the seams, we couldn’t refuse the decadent desserts presented by Pastry Chef Mohamed Safras. The Ekmek Kadaifi, a luscious confection of shredded filo pastry (much like a kunafa), custard cream, topped with a layer of airy whipped cream and sprinkled with pistachios, tasted as good as it looked. And the Mosaiko, a heavenly combination of chocolate and biscuit served with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce, was the perfect finale to our culinary odyssey.

THE SEASON OF REBIRTH

H&M is ready for spring with a collection featuring soft tailoring and a minimal colour palette.

• FASHION FOCUS

Effortless ease and style take centre stage with sculptural volume and clean lines in refined suits, sophisticated shirts and shirt dresses. You’ll spot a utilitarian edge in workwear-inspired pieces but these are often softened with embroidery, pleats and glam textures.

The tone is kept sharp and eye-catching with a palette of light blue denim, white and ecru offset by flashes of silver.

In womenswear, suits are both tailored and relaxed across blazers, trousers and waistcoats. Blouses, dresses and skirts boast romantic volume with pintucks and flounces. Toughness comes in the shape of ‘90s-inspired denim in washed-out blues. Key pieces include a shiny silver A-line dress for a pop of energy that can be styled either futuristic or retro. And accessories, such as slingback kitten heels and pointy ballerinas are set against chunky, bold jewellery.

For menswear, modern tailoring takes the lead alongside utilitarian elements and the addition of navy and chestnut in the colour palette. Key pieces include chore jackets, pull-on trousers and blousons.

Eliana Masgalos, Concept Designer at H&M, says: “This season, we were really inspired by the idea of rebirth, like the first flowers blooming. So, while there’s a romantic side to the collection, we also wanted to channel a strong, tailored vibe and workwear touches that could breathe life into the fashion wardrobe.” ✤

Dune: Part Two One Day

Need to Know:

Dune: Part Two is a 2024 American science fiction film. After the devastating events of the first movie, Paul Atreides and his mother find refuge with the Fremen and look to rebuild their lives. However, Paul still has plans to take revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his world.

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Christopher Walken

Why Is It Worth Watching?

In this sequel to the majorly successful 2021 Dune, award-winning director Denis Villeneuve digs in deeper and manages to make everything monumentally bigger and grander.

Set in the aftermath of the first movie and taking place in the sands of Arrakis, Paul (Timothée Chalamet) is now part of the Fremen people and finds himself having to acclimatise and learn their ways, while being not-sosecretly prophesied as Lisan al Gaib (the supposed messiah to the Fremen).

He befriends a young warrior, Chani (Zendaya), who he grows close to during their time fighting side-by-side against the invading Harkonnens for control of Arrakis. As events play out, Paul’s arc develops from a naive young man to the potential leader of the Fremen. He later faces a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, as he attempts to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

With great story writing, stellar performances and everything more fleshed out than the first film, including costume and set design, Dune: Part Two offers a cinematic experience that truly goes above and beyond the usual.

Dune: Part Two offers a cinematic experience that truly goes above and beyond the usual.” “

Need to Know:

One Day is a British, romantic-drama television series adapted from David Nicholls’ 2009 bestselling novel of the same name. The plot follows the 20-year relationship of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, who unexpectedly spend graduation night together and the next day decide to go their separate ways. But somehow life finds a funny way of derailing those plans and keeping their stories intertwined.

Director: Nicole Taylor

Cast : Ambika Mod, Leo Woodall, Eleanor Tomlinson, Essie Davis, Tim McInnerny, Jonny Weldon, Brendan Quinn, Billie Gadsdon, Toby Stephens

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Previously adapted into a film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess in 2011, this latest depiction (a better fit for a more nuanced retelling of the source material) is spread over a 14-episode series that effectively portrays the relationship’s sweetest highs and the equally heart-wrenching lows in the most impactful way. The plot kicks off in 1988, when working-class Leeds native, Emma (Ambika Mod), and upper middle-class posh boy from Oxfordshire, Dexter (Leo Woodall), first cross paths on the night of their graduation on July 15. They make an unlikely connection despite their many differences and stay friends, but life takes them down separate paths. Every episode revisits the pair on that very date in a different year, with each encounter playing out their will-they-won’t-they love affair in the most intriguing ways.

Offering plenty of moments ranging from wonderfully triumphant to deeply frustrating and painfully heartbreaking at times, the show is quite a journey and completely worth the binge-watch!

ON THE RECORD

ROCK TANGK

TANGK is the fifth album from the postpunk icons from Bristol, England – IDLES. On production, they’re once again working with hip-hop producer, Kenny Beats, the band’s guitarist, Mark Bowen, and to further explore unfamiliar sonic realms, they’ve enlisted long-time Radiohead producer, Nigel Godrich.

On the aptly named opener, IDEA 01, the song comes to life with the steady rhythm of just the bass drum. Closely followed by frenetic piano playing that’s soon accompanied with ominous synths until finally graced with frontman Joe Talbot’s vocals – equal parts sinister and compassionate – an intriguing mood and stage is set.

In more familiar fashion, Gift Horse unleashes with an overdriven bass and drums bounce that’s sure to get your foot tapping. The songs build into one of their best choruses that’s massively imposing. Joe howls here like a general commanding a stampede of horses.

Serving as a perfect descent, the staccato instrumentation on POP POP POP, is a soothing follow up. Immediately, Joe’s voice is at its menacing best on the brilliantly nefarious sounding Roy But coming out of left field, the unexpected fragility and delicate arrangement on The Gospel is captivating. The new album is a satisfyingly ecstatic and hard-hitting journey.

RAP BLUE LIPS

Making a highly anticipated return after quite a long hiatus, five years to be exact, is California-based rapper ScHoolboy Q with his sixth studio album, Blue Lips, released under the famous Top Dawg Entertainment record label.

Not tied down to a particular theme or any overarching concept, Q’s latest project is a free-flowing mixed bag of vibe heavy, weird, daring and thrillingly experimental hip-hop music.

Sounding focussed and villainous on Pop , Q’s mood and lyrics get progressively meaner as he keeps up with the track’s multiple beat switches. But things get immediately laid-back and up-beat on THank god 4 me , where he switches his flow up seamlessly and dances across the smooth production, this one’s an easy favourite.

With a nod to the late great Mac Miller on Blueslides, a jazzy piano accompanies Q as he steps into reflective mood speaking on depression, desperation and more.

ScHoolboy flaunts some of his most honest and technically sharp wordplay on tracks such as Yeern 101, Movies and Cooties. While oHio featuring Freddie Gibbs and Foux featuring Ab-Soul are other notable moments.

Bringing his A-game in terms of lyricism and accompanied with top-tier production, this project finds ScHoolboy Q in fine form.

THRILLER She’s Not Sorry

The latest offering from the New York Times bestselling writer of Local Woman Missing introduces us to ICU nurse Meghan Michaels, who breaks her own rule of detachment from her patients in the case of a young woman with a traumatic brain injury, who seems to have jumped from a bridge. But, when a witness comes forward to offer shocking details suggesting she may have been pushed, Meghan becomes deeply involved with the victim and her family, putting herself and her daughter at risk in the process.

HUMANITIES, HISTORY

A History Of The World In Twelve Shipwrecks

From a treasure-filled Bronze Age ship built during the age of Queen Nefertiti, a Viking warship made for King Cnut himself and Henry VIII’s spectacular Mary Rose to the tragic story of HMS Terror and tales of bravery and endurance aboard HMS Gairsoppa in World War Two, renowned marine archaeologist David Gibbins brings us stories of some of the greatest underwater discoveries of all time. Not just tales of the ships and the people who sailed on them, this is also the story of the spread of people, religion and ideas around the world, a story of colonialism and migration which continues today.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Chin Up Kate

So, it turns out the Princess of Wales has cancer. The poor woman took time out from under the microscope of the media’s gaze to undergo scheduled surgery in January and, when she failed to resurface as bright eyed and bushy tailed as usual within a couple of weeks, the trolls stepped up.

From Saudi To The Universe

Sock It To ‘Em

First it was the anti-monarchists questioning the length of her hospital stay and calling her workshy, then it was the conspiracy theorists, speculating about her prolonged absence. Even Hollywood got in on the act, posting derogatory memes.

When Princess Catherine announced, in a personal video message, that she was undergoing treatment for cancer, it’s safe to say much of the world was in shock. And we’ve rarely seen so much back pedalling – even a few, seemingly sincere, apologies.

So, with the press having taken pretty much everyone but itself to task for this young mother’s treatment, it remains to be seen whether she will be allowed the privacy for herself and her kids that she so poignantly requested.

Have to say, this is a story we never expected to write. Alarabiya News reports that Saudi Arabia is to have its first ever contestant at the Miss Universe pageant, which takes place in Mexico later this year. Riyadh-born model Rumy al-Qahtani announced her candidacy via a social media post in which she posed alongside the Saudi flag wearing a sash that proclaims Miss Universe Saudi Arabia. Now, no matter what you think about these kinds of pageants, this is a sure sign of how far women have come in the Kingdom. Just a few short years ago they

were not allowed to drive and most wore the Islamic head cover.

In March 2018, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, stated that women had free choice whether to wear the hijab and abaya and here we are, just six short years later, with one of their number about to represent the Kingdom on one of the world’s biggest stages.

Rumy, who often wears Saudi designs, has said she wants to promote the Kingdom’s culture and heritage. We wish her luck.

And now for something a little bit different that will, hopefully, make you smile. Since we’re all about the girls this month, we love this little tale about two high-ranking teams in England’s Women’s Soccer League who found themselves in an embarrassing position. Arsenal were all set to play their London rivals at Chelsea in front of nearly 33,000 fans when it was discovered both teams had the same white coloured socks. Apparently, this is taboo.

The referee delayed the game while the visitors ran to Chelsea’s team shop and bought black socks and then had to use to tape to try and hide the opposition’s logo and sponsor. Play eventually got underway 30 minutes late and the visitors not only lost their socks but also the match. Have to say, it does beg the question of why the socks are so important, surely the rest of the kit would be a dead giveaway as to who’s who?
