History and Heritage Honoured

In honour of all that the UAE’s late founding father, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, did for the country, a special festival will celebrate the Emirates’ cultural inheritance, showcase the rich diversity of its traditions and provide an educational platform for learning more about the fascinating history of the UAE. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival will illustrate that the country’s remarkable progress is not simply a coincidence, but a legacy of its forefathers’ inspiring achievements. The 2014 edition of the festival creatively blends technology and culture to bring Emirati heritage to life, featuring living museums that allow visitors to experience the nation’s history through interactive activities and live attractions. Visitors will also have the chance to discover the diverse environments that shaped early life in the UAE, namely the desert, oasis, mountains and sea. CAMPING 101

Nomad’s Land

For thousands of years, camping was a way of life for the Bedouin of the Emirates, as tribes kept on a constant move across the vast desert, setting up tents and following herds of camel and sheep to greener pastures. Today, there is very little left of that world, and like most long-established traditions, camping has matured with time‌.

26. fact magazine

Rewind back 80 years to the UAE where the only way of life was that of the Bedouin. That’s right, not long ago, the Emirates was a vast area of desert inhabited by indigenous tribes, whose proud and resourceful tentdwelling nomads formed a culture that is now one of the founding pillars of the UAE, playing an integral part in Emirati national identity. Life and camping back then was simple; enjoyment came from the freedom of living under the stars, using camels as the main mode of transport, and residing in goat-skinned tents as makeshift homes. The lifestyle of the nomadic tribes was essentially a principal building block of Emirati society. Their independence and resourcefulness in the face of harsh environments, illustrates, even to this day, the Emirati code of hospitality, which is to show great respect and honour to guests. The native Bedouins lived in varied terrain, from the ocean (for pearl-diving and fishing), the desert (for grazing areas for their animals), and the oasis (for the

farming of dates and veg). If we flashforward to modern day, you can still see the lush date farms in Al Ain and wet terraced gardens in the mountain valleys. Today there’s little trace left of that precious way of life, with camping evolving to keep in sync with modern society needs. Now, taking a trip into the desert is more of a must-do tourist option, or a result of the need to escape mundane daily tasks and the city bustle, to seek solace in the vast emptiness. Especially during the cooler months of November and March, the UAE desert becomes a haven for short breaks and holidaymakers. And there are many different ways to go about planning and visiting the desert. Many will find that tour companies offer the best and safest packages, customdesigned to suit specific time frames and budgets. Desert Safaris are most popular; where people are whisked away in a 4x4 for a thrilling ride over massive sand dunes, either for dinner, dance, and activities in the desert, or an overnight stay. Some locals, on the other hand, do it differently. Many set up semi-permanent winter camps offering the comfort of home and providing modern-day amenities. This experience, aptly dubbed, ‘glamping’ is somewhat of a pimped out version of Bedouin living and a great way for family and friends to enjoy the desert whilst spending quality time together. For those who want a real piece of nomadic life, you’ll have to forgo everyday comforts and get ready to rough it. The best way to do it is plan your route into and through the desert with a mobile tent in tow. Pitch your tent under the stars just as the Bedouins would. With the UAE’s great climate and numerous camping spots, it’s never been easier to take a trip into the desert than it is now. Go on, call on your inner nomad and start planning!

fact magazine .27

Camping 101 There’s nothing more important that being well prepared before you head out into the desert to experience life under the stars. Here’s your ultimate guide to prep time…

Where to buy your gear DUBIZZLE UAE

We just can’t get enough of this super useful website, and you’ll be happy to know that Dubizzle also offers somewhere you can buy quality new and used camping equipment including tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, state-of-the-art torches and lanterns, and so much more! You’re guaranteed to find everything you need for a great price too. Visit www.abudhabi. dubizzle.com for more information.

Where to Set Up Camp… The UAE desert is full of wonderful places to pitch your tent and gaze the stars. Don’t expect great facilities in many of these spots but do get ready for space and freedom, and for an experience that will give you a real taste of the country’s outdoors. A two and a half hour journey will get you to the Ras Al Khaimah desert. Here, the true nature of camping comes to life as you can set up near one of the small farms (be sure not too disturb the locals!) surrounded by sand dunes, little oasis farms and camel pens. Take an early morning drive and you might just see some Arabian Oryx, wild birds and pretty banyan trees too. Make sure to take everything, including lots of food and drink, because there are no everyday facilities in the area. The epic slice of Rub Al Khali (the empty quarter) deserves at least a two or three day trip! Liwa is 200km southwest of Abu Dhabi and though it might seem quite a trek, it’s the world’s 28. fact magazine

biggest sand desert, so it’s well worth the drive. These sand mountains are relatively accessible by 4x4 and the whole region is scattered with curved sand dunes and dramatic plunges so if you’re there for a spot of dune bashing (you’d be crazy not to) make sure you’ve got an experienced driver at the wheel. There are plenty of great spots in this desert, dotted with freshwater pools and date plantations; all you have to do is take any road from Liwa oasis or follow the signs for Tal Mireb (Moreeb Hill). If you’re new to this whole desert camping thing then something a little closer to Abu Dhabi like Shwaib would be the perfect choice. This is where you’ll find fairly easy access to hidden campsites where stargazing from the top of a dune will wipe away all your worries. It’s close enough to civilisation that you can get your friends to drop off a Starbucks coffee in the morning, but it’s faraway for you to enjoy and appreciate the stunning scenery.

The seven golden rules OF camping

The Site

•Always pitch your camp in an empty open space far from jutting rocks or steep sandy inclines. • Pick a spot clear of plants to avoid any hazardous fire outbreaks. • Do not camp in places that are prohibited, the warning signs are there for a reason!

30. fact magazine

The Food

The Car

• Before you hit the road make sure you check up on your car for any mechanical problems; tyres, headlights, and battery are the most important. • Always travel in a convoy incase of a breakdown. • If you’re heading out to the desert a 4x4 is a must! •Never pass a petrol station without filling up, you never know when the next one will be.

• Don’t go over board with the menu, just take options that are easy and simple to make. Sausages and smores are always a great idea! • Canned food is always an easy meal and won’t take up too much space in the car. • If you bring fruits or vegetables with pick, something that won’t go bad very fast; you don’t want to get stuck with spoilt produce.

Etiquette

Must-Haves

The Water

• Water is essential for anyone hitting the desert so make sure to stock up on H20 but don’t foolishly waste it; water will be your best friend out there. • Remember you’ll need to bring water for both drinking and washing up.

• GPS systems have become a camper’s essential tool but it’s always a safe bet to take a map along just in case the navigation system stops working. • A compass, shovel, torch, rope, air pump, and Swissknife are fundamental to any camping trip.

• When pitching your tent make sure to clear the ground from any unwanted objects. • Before leaving and heading back home clean your camping site and put out your fire.

First Aid

• A first aid kit should be prepared in advance with all the basic necessities like band-aids, burn cream, painkillers, and medicines just in case someone gets hurt or sick. • If you bring along antibiotics with make sure to store them somewhere cool.

Falcons have long-been part of Emirati culture and heritage, playing an integral part of desert life. FACT explores this timely tradition‌

Desert traditions

fact magazine .33

FACT FOCUS

When we first moved to Abu Dhabi, finding out the city is home to a falcon hospital was something definitely out of the ordinary; it was unusual but, admittedly, intriguing. According to its website, “The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) is the first public institution in the United Arab Emirates providing comprehensive veterinary health care services exclusively for falcons.” How cool is that? Falconry has been practiced in this part of the world for centuries. Primarily, falcons were used for hunting, to supplement an otherwise meagre Bedouin diet with some meat, such as hare or houbara bustard (a large bird in the bustard family). But hunting expeditions also provided the ideal setting for tribal sheikhs to tour their area and connect with the people. Preceding the autumn south-bound flight of the houbara bustard was the migration of peregrine and saker falcons. Falconers would hide in a hole in the sand, and if they managed to trap one of the highly prized birds, they had only weeks to train the falcon before the migrating houbaras started to arrive. The handler’s main task was to develop a strong bond of trust with the wild captured bird as part of the training. Today, falconry is practiced mainly for sport, but the skill of a falconer is still highly esteemed, whilst the beauty and strength of a falcon is very much treasured in the UAE. One place where you can still experience the traditional form of falconry is Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara. Here, Naseer Muhammad Abdul Latif, a connoisseur falconer, proudly shows off his amazing skills as he takes guests on the historic journey of falconry that started over two millenniums ago. Naseer has had a passion for birds 34. fact magazine

from a very young age when he used to look after his brother’s pigeons and parrots at home. While working on a farm, Naseer helped feed the local falcons and started training them during his free time. When the farm owner saw his interest and enthusiasm around the birds, he offered him the opportunity to go through proper training to become an expert falconer. The training of a falcon has not changed for centuries – a leather hood is used to cover the falcon’s eyes and the bird is fed only small portions. The falconer names his new bird in the first few weeks and remains with the bird constantly so he gets comfortable with his owner. “Falcons are wild, fast and aggressive birds so finding the right balance between patience, time and effort can sometimes be complex during training,” Naseer explains. “For example, during the initial first few weeks if I release the bird and push him to fly while he is not hungry, chances are he might not come back to me, so training requires a great level of expertise and understanding to master the bird.” Exercising such a free creature often turns into an adventure in itself, and Naseer has a lot of stories to share on the subject: “During the early stages of my training, I had to walk for many kilometres in the sand dunes to find the falcon that I had just released, and try to convince him to come back to me. Sometimes, you just have to accept that he won’t come back, that’s one of the risks.” However, when Naseer watches his falcon’s soar before guests at Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort, showcasing their incredible speed of 320 kilometres per hour and leaving the viewers in awe, he could not be more proud of his accomplishment as Anantara’s Chief Falconer.

The falconer names his new bird in the first few weeks and remains with the bird constantly so he gets comfortable with his owner.

“Men have looked upon the desert as barren land, the free holding of whoever chose; but in fact each hill and valley in it had a man who was its acknowledged owner and would quickly assert the right of his family or clan to it, against aggression.” - T. E. Lawrence. “Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.” - William Butler Yeats. ARTS

With Abu Dhabi Art 2014 taking place this month, galleries around the city are embarking on their very own artistic adventures. One such place is Salwa Zeidan Gallery located in The Collection at Saadiyat Island. FACT caught up with Executive Manager Vanja Rontini to learn more about the new exhibition dubbed Collective Chemistry: Selection of artists from the gallery collection…

Hi Vanja! Tell us a little more about this collective exhibition… Our show Collective Chemistry will try to explore the invisible connections present within the art world: colours that melt together, art expressions that complete each other and ideas that form harmonious unities. Our idea was to create a collective exhibition that will feature around 20 artworks, part of them coming from our gallery’s private collection. As we are opening this event just before Abu Dhabi Art, we hope to add one more successful event to the rich cultural life of the capital in the days surrounding the Fair. The idea is to put some of our wellestablished artists under one roof: Zhuang Hong Yi, Richard Orlinski, Emmanuel 52. fact magazine

Guiragossian, Reza Derakshani, Adel El Siwi, Sabhan Adam, Salwa Zeidan, Katya Traboulsi, Mandy Kunze, Nives Widauer to name few. Some of the private collection pieces by Hassan Sharif, Mohammed Kazem and Jukhee Kwon will also be on display. Why do you think events like Abu Dhabi Art are good for the city? Abu Dhabi Art has grown significantly during the past years. It operates on stable

“ I believe Abu Dhabi can soon make a notable impact within the global art market”

financial and managing grounds and so far it has built many long-term relationships with high-profile local and world galleries. I believe that following this path and continuing to enrich its programme every year, it is set to attract the world’s best galleries and further enforce its influence within the global art market. This, in turn, sheds a great light on the city and its growing attractions. We see more and more tourists coming every year, and Abu Dhabi increasingly becoming the “future art centre” everyone’s talking about. Together with the ambitious Saadiyat Cultural District, I believe Abu Dhabi can soon make a notable impact within the global art market - and this is something that Abu Dhabi Art is certainly a part of.

“The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.” Pablo Picasso What can people expect to see at this collective show? Our idea was to try and add more value to the week surrounding Abu Dhabi Art and give the possibility for the Fair audience to enjoy some high-quality work outside the Fair’s walls. Being in close proximity of Manarat Al Saadiyat and inside the St. Regis Hotel, we invite everyone to pay us a visit, join the opening and add a new experience to their stay in Abu Dhabi maybe even buy some new art pieces for their collections! Why is it important for UAE art galleries to collaborate with international artists? I believe this form of collaboration can bring many benefits for the long run. By giving more exposure to international artists, you give the audience important possibility to introduce themselves with new styles and influences, and get a fresh perspective on the newest developments in the art market. This year within our booth in Abu Dhabi Art we decided to put emphasis on both local and international art. We believe in always giving the audience new things to discover, and I think that Abu Dhabi Art is doing the same with each passing year. What do you hope to achieve from this month-long exhibit? Primarily our intention is to make an interesting, high-quality show. We want to give exposure to the artists that are mostly not present in the UAE art market, and make their work available to the art lovers. Our idea was also to make sort of an extension of our booth at Abu Dhabi Art, thus making two separate places to showcase our pieces. We wanted to make the most of this opportunity during Abu Dhabi Art to showcase our gallery’s traits and unique identity, and hopefully further expanding our reach and status worldwide.

Collective Chemistry runs at Salwa Zeidan Gallery until December 14. Visit www. salwazeidangallery. com for more information.

The Imitation Game

What’s it about:

Set during the darkest days of World War II, this is a British biopic of mathematician and WWII code breaker Alan Turing. Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, the nail-biting story follows Turing and his team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, as work relentlessly to decrypt enemy communication.

Director: Morten Tyldum Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance. Why it’s worth watching? Let’s not forget that Alan Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing and credited with cracking the German Enigma code, and whose genius saved thousands of lives during WWII. But, Turing lived a troubled life with just as many personal tragedies to go alongside his professional triumphs. It’s this life of alienating others and repeatedly clashing with bosses that Norwegian director Morten Tyldum renders with such accuracy and taste. All the ups and downs of Turing’s life arrive right on schedule in a plot that’s so well told that audiences will be drawn into its manipulation without question. Benedict Cumberbatch’s masterful performance will definitely get even the most highbrow of critics talking. The Imitation Game is compelling from start to finish and we’re convinced it both looks and feels like another serious awards season contender.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 What’s it about: Katniss Everdeen and her most trusted friends are back and this time they’re hold up in District 13 as rebels. After Katniss and a few others were extracted from the Quarter Quell, where Peeta was left behind under control of The Capitol, her courage and fight for justice is called upon by those who want to help overthrow the cruel ruling President Snow.

“…though we love that the final part has been split into two films, there’s a sense of underwhelming from the trailer…” Director: Francis Lawrence Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks. Why it’s worth watching? Though we love that the final part has been split into two films, we’re slightly underwhelmed by the trailer which screams ‘predictable’. Don’t get us wrong, we’re pretty big into the world of The Hunger Games, but now that the initial suspense, of being a tribute and getting thrown into a world where it’s kill or be killed, is over we’re finding it hard to get excited. Here’s hoping that Katniss and her new-found rebel family will bring just as much assault, emotion and drama to the film as audiences expect.

What If? - Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions By Randall Munroe

ROCK/ALTERNATIVE/ GRUNGE DANCE/ ELECTRONIC

Motion

By Calvin Harris

In the world of modern-day music,

it’s becoming rather difficult for artists to retain their signature sound without being too generic. This is, however, not the case with Calvin Harris. Enter Motion, a 15-track record that has, so far, produced a string of hits for the Scottish Producer/DJ. Yes, Calvin Harris seems to be on a bit of a roll. And after 2014’s massive hit Summer, it seems this will be a banner year for one of dance music’s finest. We’re loving the instrumental rave-house track Slow Acid, packed with mid-tempo energetic beats and pulsating jolts of a prodigy-like, high-pitched “Wooo!” in the vocals. Where he really wins is with the visuals for this song (if you haven’t already, go and watch the video on YouTube now!). And it’s no secret that Calvin Harris has earned himself major music credentials these last few years - this only gets better on Motion. Perhaps the most anticipated track on the LP is Together, which features Gwen Stefani on vocals, and then there’s Outside with Ellie Goulding (his phone contact list must be every guy’s dream). Blame is another standout, a more fuller and structurally rounded track – maybe this is a new era for Calvin Harris.

Sonic Highway

By Foo Fighters This album had thousands of reviews months before its release date – how, we hear you ask? The honest answer is, we don’t know, because the Foo Fighters didn’t release a single track in the months leading up to the album release. BUT, does that matter? The obvious answer is no, it doesn’t! It’s the hardcore, loyal fans that built up such a hype for this eight-track record (and we’re not surprised, the Foo Fighters are awesome) without having even the slightest idea of what it sounds like! Now that’s a fandom you don’t want to mess with. Just like these hundreds of thousands of eagerly awaiting music minions, we too were unable to get a real glimpse of Sonic Highway, BUT, let’s be honest, the Foo Fighters wound up being the one band to survive the 90s alt-rock explosion unscathed, and we’re sure that their eighth studio album is going to bring them crazy amounts of success.

Ponder the hypothetical with the creator of the widely popular web comic – xkcd; Randal Munroe. He answers the fuzzy and strange questions put forth by his fans, ranging from unusual to out-and-out diabolical. Questions like, What if a Richter 15 earthquake hit New York City? Or horrible ways you could die while building a periodic table out of all the actual elements. These weird and wacky questions are met with Munroe’s well-researched answers. He’s come up with a magnum opus, including never-before-answered questions with a spoon of wit and information!

when Rolls-Royce want you to experience their cars, they want you to experience the whole shebang – a business class flight to London, a room at the Shangri-La in the Shard, dinner at the Savoy, and a glorious journey through the English countryside.

58. fact magazine

So what’s new about the GHOST Series II? Design-wise, very little, as Rolls-Royce feel that their current creation is already as good as it can be, and only minor changes were required to freshen up the new model. They wouldn’t be wrong in thinking this way, as the Ghost has been the driving force behind a huge increase in total units sold for the brand worldwide, since it was first released back in 2009. However, the Series II does now feature the same impressive satellite-guided gearbox that was featured for the first time in the Wraith. This gearbox is fed information from the Sat-Nav to predict upcoming road types, such as motorway, country lane and twisting mountain road, and calibrates the gearbox for optimum performance on that particular type of road. Does it make a difference? We couldn’t tell you, as the technology is not about speed or power, but more about smoothness and refinement. Therefore, if you’ve noticed any

change, the system has failed to do its job. We noticed nothing! Billed as “a less formal, more contemporary and dynamic expression of Rolls-Royce luxury”, the Ghost represents the driver’s alternative to the Phantom, which is most often chauffer driven. Having driven both we can definitely say that the Ghost is less formidable than the Phantom, being smaller in most dimensions, and therefore more manageable. We say ‘less formidable’, as the Ghost is still no compact car. At well over 17 feet long and almost six-and-a-half feet wide, it’s still bigger than other premium luxury

barges like the S Class, A8 and the XJ. Powering the Ghost is Rolls Royce’s monstrous 6.6l twin-turbo V12, which puts out almost 600hp and 780Nm of torque, so despite weighing around twoand-a-half tonnes (depending on bespoke custom options), it’s still no slouch. It’ll hit 100km/h in just five seconds, and reach a limited top speed of 250km/h. We experienced the full benefit of that incredible Rolls-Royce powertrain on a delightful cruise through the English countryside. The wonderful thing about British country lanes is the scenery. The not-sowonderful thing about them is the traffic. Thankfully, the queue we were stuck in, quickly shortened until there were only three cars in front. We saw a space, weighed our options… and floored it! And something very strange happened. You see, normally, when you plant the accelerator in a high-powered automatic vehicle, several things occur. fact magazine .59

First, there is a pause, as the gears change down several notches to get the revs up and maximise power. Then there is a massive roar from the engine, and with a lot of vibration and drama the car surges forward and after a couple of seconds you’re going very fast. Now go back and delete everything from “First…” to “… drama”, and you begin to get the idea of what the same experience in a Rolls Royce feels like. As I pulled out and floored it, I noticed in the distance a bus coming the other way. I was already committed, and felt there was enough room. A high-pitched squeal from the passenger seat indicated that my co-driver did not agree. However, about two seconds later we were back in our lane with room to spare, and I was left wondering what the hell had just happened! You see, there was no pause; there was no roar, and certainly no drama. I’d pulled out, the car had simply, silently, and instantly surged forward with unbelievable pace, and glided back into the left hand lane before I’d even had time to ponder whether it was a 60. fact magazine

A tour of the factory in Goodwood revealed an incredible host of craftsmen, engineers and experts that come together to create a Rolls-Royce vehicle. good idea or not. It was all just so… effortless! It was truly the strangest sensation, or lack thereof. And this is exactly what the Rolls-Royce Ghost, or any Rolls-Royce for that matter, is all about. It’s not about action and drama; it’s about luxury. Nothing else. Just pure, unadulterated luxury. They say that Rolls-Royces are all hand built to ensure the absolute highest levels of craftsmanship, but that’s just half the truth. The reality is that each and every car is made to order, and therefore no two Rolls-Royces are alike. Each one is a work of art, and each owner is considered part of the family. As I said, a Rolls-Royce isn’t just a car, but a way of life, and I’m glad that I was able to experience that way of life!

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee srt

fact magazine .63

CITY RIDES

The Grand Cherokee SRT is a car with a sinister alter ego. What it sacrifices in offroad capability it replaces with utter lunacy – a no-holdsbarred American muscle car disguised as a family SUV! 64. fact magazine

Despite Jeep’s illustrious off-road history, the Grand Cherokee SRT is really designed as a street machine. Granted, it does have far more ground clearance that your average muscle car, but those shiny alloys and that big front splitter rule it out for anything more extreme than a gravel track, though they do serve to make this car look absolutely superb. In addition, the Selec-Trac all-wheel drive system as featured on the SRT doesn’t have the rock, gravel or mud settings that the standard Grand Cherokee has, but tellingly it does have two settings that the normal one doesn’t have, and those are Sport and Track. Even more tellingly, it also has a very unmistakeable launch control button, featuring an icon based on drag strip starting lights. All signs point to the SRT being built solely for the tarmac, but the real truth is in the name – Street Racing Technology. So how does it fare?

Well, the excitement starts when you push the ignition switch and hear that delicious 6.4l V8 rumble to life. We fully predict that the first journey this car makes whenever someone gets into it for the first time is to a quiet, straight stretch of road, where that launch control will be put to the test. It was definitely the case on this particular review! To give you an idea of what came next, I’ll tell you that the 6.4l V8 puts out 470hp and 624Nm of torque. This means a 0-100km/h of just 4.9 seconds. 4.9! It’s absolutely insane.

That’s faster than the V8 Cayenne GTS. The Range Rover Sport, BMW X5 M and the Mercedes ML 63 AMG all do it in 4.7 seconds, but here’s the rub – the Grand Cherokee SRT costs around half of the cheapest of this premium line-up! There is simply no other sports SUV that gives you this kind of performance for this kind of money. The Jeep doesn’t match the Cayenne in terms of agility – you do feel like you’re in a two-tonne SUV – but having said that the Selec-Trac system does an incredible job of hauling the Grand Cherokee SRT around corners. There is some tyre squeal, but you

can corner and change the direction of this big SUV with amazing agility and accuracy. However, I can’t help but feel that it would have benefitted greatly from a hydraulic suspension that lowered the centre of gravity a couple of inches when you really want to throw it around. Inside, the interior really does the exterior justice. A premium vibe is given off by the abundance of padded leather surfaces, carbon fibre panels with chrome finishing, and even a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter. Aside from the gear shifter, there are also paddle shifters on the steering wheel, further enhancing the car’s performance credentials. Then there’s the impressive list of standard features – you name it, the SRT’s got it: Adaptive cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, in-built hard disc drive, Sat-Nav, air-conditioned seats… the list goes on. A real bonus is the very cool SRT software displayed on the 7-inch TFT infotainment screen. On this, you’ll find gauges for 0-60 and quarter mile times, g-force indicators and more track-based gadgetry that is loads of fun to play with. So, what is the purpose of this vehicle? Is it simply an oversized and overweight muscle car, or is it a viable mean machine for track, street and mud? Well, the truth is that you’d have to take mud out of that last question, but after only a short while driving it, all doubts are dispelled as to this machine’s true purpose. It is simply being utterly bad-ass! fact magazine .65

F1 Season Review

F1

Championship Season Review As Abu Dhabi prepares to host the final race in what has been a highly interesting and controversial season, we take a look back at all the action that has taken place so far…

T

he majority of the 2014 Formula One Championship season has been defined by the engine rule changes that saw the introduction of highly complex hybrid V6 engines which many teams struggled desperately to come to terms with. It was Mercedes that clearly gained most from the new rules, with the Mercedes drivers utterly dominating the season with pole-to-finish wins, and often lapping almost every other driver in the field in the process. However, that’s not to say that it has been plain sailing for Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, as technical failures and an increasingly heated rivalry came to a head in the Belgian GP, when the two drivers clashed in a move by Rosberg seen as highly controversial which put Hamilton out of the race and allowed Daniel Ricciardo to steal the win. And it has been the Mercedes-powered F1 teams that have also clearly dominated the season, with teams running Mercedes engines holding three out of the top five spots in the Constructor’s Championship, and drivers powered by Mercedes engines holding seven out of the top ten spots in the Driver’s Championship. 66. fact magazine

But again, it hasn’t all been roses for Mercedes, as a hugely impressive season for Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, powered by a Reanult engine, has seen him steal three well-deserved wins and seven podiums overall, completely overshadowing his teammate and four-time World-Champion Sebastian Vettel and earning himself the third spot on the table as of now. Behind him, Valteri Bottas, driving for the Mercedes-powered Williams F1, has also had a tremendous season, and is close enough to Ricciardo to potentially steal the third spot, although given Ricciardo’s almost flawless form this season it’s a long

shot for Bottas. At the time of writing, we still have the three races of November to go – the US GP, the Brazilian GP and the grand finale in Abu Dhabi. For all intents and purposes, it looks like the season will be a battle to the end between the two Mercedes drivers, and then a battle for third between the rest. Hamilton is now so far in front, almost a hundred points at the time of writing, that Ricciardo would have to take first place in all three races with Hamilton and Rosberg not taking points in any of them for him to steal the championship. We predict a comfortable third spot for Ricciardo, but what will happen between

the two Mercedes drivers is anyone’s guess. As the competition has become more heated, we’ve seen increasingly aggressive and desperate moves by Rosberg who is clearly hungry to win himself a first Championship title, and it’s so close he can almost taste it. Will technical difficulties hamper any drivers, or will they collide again as the temptation of the Championship title hangs tantalisingly over both of them? ? At this stage, we really couldn’t tell you, but we can’t wait to find out See you all at Yas Marina Circuit at the Etihad Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 23rd! fact magazine .67

The Future of Motorsports Kids across the region, and indeed the world, are being given an insightful look into the world of motorsports through ‘F1 in Schools’. The Yas Marina Circuit isn’t just about Formula One. It has three pillars of operation – health and fitness, education and community, and of course, motorsports. And a highlight of their education and community activities is the F1 in Schools programme, which is running alongside the Abu Dhabi GP. motorsports and F1 in general. “It has been running for over ten years, and in the UAE for five years. We started with around ten teams in the first year, but in the last national event, for all the schools around the UAE we had 66 teams!” explains Abdullah Yousef Al Shammari, the YAS Community Manager. Under the programme, groups of up to six school children create teams, design promotional and marketing material, create a budget, secure sponsorship and then build a car. The car, which is a scale model

powered by compressed air, competes with cars from other teams on a specially-built straight-line track. The teams allocate roles such as team manager, design engineer and graphic designer. Students must also create supporting documentation such as a project plan, brochures and so on. “Some of the kids have been taking part for three to four years, and they’ve really learned a lot along the way, and it has become so advanced that these kids really impress everyone with their professional approach and achievements,” adds Abdullah. It’s an incredible learning experience for students, as the skills they learn do not just apply to motorsports, but to all areas of business and industry. Rock-Hard Ricciardo!

We were lucky enough to grab a quick chat with Red Bull’s new young hot shot Daniel Ricciardo (pronounced ‘ri-kardo’) ahead of last month’s Bahrain F1 Grand Prix, where he beat team-mate Vettel to take an impressive fourth place, after starting in 13th on the grid due to a 10-position penalty…

How are you getting used to all the new media attention? “It’s been a lot easier since Australia, Australia was pretty hectic, there was a lot going on there, but I think you’ve just got to try and go with it, don’t overthink it and try not to burn yourself out with it!” How does it feel to be sitting in the former seat of one of Australia’s most famous racing drivers? “I think it’s really cool. It was obviously a seat that I wanted, and I’d followed Mark from even before Formula One, so it’s quite a privilege to take that seat and now the plan is to run with it and keep it up at the front.”

There are other factors in racing, unfortunately not everything is always in the driver’s control. ”

You’ve risen up through the ranks with Red Bull, so it seemed inevitable that you’d take your place here? “It’s definitely the biggest reward possible with their programme, although World Champion would be nice too! I was 18 when I started in the Red Bull young driver’s programme, in the Formula Renault

2-litre, so yeah that’s their philosophy, to bring us up. Sebastian was obviously the first guy to go from the start to the end, and I’m the second, and it’s obviously the biggest opportunity of my career, and nice to have done it with Red Bull.”

You’ve had a promising start to season, but been let down by unfortunate incidents, which must be kind of frustrating? “Yeah, in the first couple of races the end result has been frustrating, not getting rewarded for having a good weekend, but at the same time I’m not frustrated with my performance, which is a good thing. There are other factors in racing, unfortunately not everything is always in the driver’s control. I’m sure it’ll turn around and I’ll get the points back somehow.” Despite a very tough time in testing, it seems that Red Bull have overcome their reliability and pace problems to have a competitive car once again. It must be quite a relief? “It’s been a big surprise for us, but a good surprise. A month ago, when we were here for testing, it wasn’t looking bright at all, we weren’t expecting to get close to the podium in the first few races. But we’ve done that, so we’ve got a lot of excitement about how the rest of the season’s going to go.” And finally, Ford or Holden? “Holden!”

An added bonus is the single detachable cable with in-line remote and microphone compatible with iPhones, meaning you can answer calls without removing the headphones (cool and convenient, right?). On a crowded display stand in an electronic retail giant, our eyes were immediately drawn to these super-stylish headphones. A cool retro design available in an attractive range of colours, including pink, blue and, our favourite, a white/brown combo. Premium materials including soft leather, brushed stainless steel and, most unusually, alcantara, really add to the desirability of these headphones. On-ear headphones can often be heavy and cumbersome, but a clever, minimalist design and lightweight materials, including lovely soft leather for the cans, make these ones super comfy to wear, whilst still providing high-quality sound. Noise cancellation is good, and audio is loud, crisp and clear. While these headphones are a touch above average on the price range at AED800 or thereabouts, they’re still cheaper than a set of Beats, and, in our opinion, far superior in both style and quality!

The major trends of the season inspire the collection, along with echoes of key moments from the 20th Century for women, particularly from 1960s to 1990s

HIS

Modernised with an urban touch, the men’s collection is inspired by outdoor environments, with diverse materials often mixed in a single garment and the street looks are combined with sportier styles. Beat the cold with the brand’s urban edged waistcoats or canvas aviator jackets in contrasting materials; in fleece lining mixed with nylon, or denim with leather. 78. fact magazine

Play with your look by mixing a technical winter coat with comforting jogging chinos? Sounds different, but will look tasteful! The collection offers running shoes; which are prominent in this line, sharing the spotlight with mountain boots and thick rubber soles. Season essentials aren’t forgotten, such as rubberised parkas in bright colours. As for prints, there are ethnic geometric patterns, as well as

small all-over prints. The colour palette includes reds, burgundies and mustards, as well as classic blacks and whites.

HERS

With technical fabrics like neoprene and quilting, this line features innovative textures with

sophisticated finishes and prints. The sixties inspired preppy youthful lines with straight cuts or the seventies style bohemian looks with flowing dresses, rustic fabrics and handmade details; both have generous cocoon silhouettes and structured materials, which make the outfit mod! Prints feature natural elements like water-colours, blots or photographs of large flowers and leopard and snake skins. The tie-shaped or Africaninspired geometric patterns look extremely classy and the texts with evoking advertising slogans are trendy for casual wear. A-line dresses, pleats, culottes and aviator and bomber jackets are key garments, as well as looks that combine the same prints on top and bottom.

THE DESIGNERS

An Artistic Love Affair

C

urating art for Annada scarves is one of the most enjoyable part” says Nada Alawi who is the Founder and Creative Director of the brand. Nada has the tough job of selecting the art pieces which go on the scarf and the selection process is a tedious affair, “ I sit with my creative team and select a palette, based on that we select the art pieces which we receive from renowned local artists” explains Nada. She finds the collaboration with these artists a complete pleasure and honour. Renowned local artist Abbas Almosawi was the artist of Annada’s very first scarf, titled ‘The Secret Garden’. “The Secret Garden is a timeless piece which depicts floral patterns of the 17th Century Persian carpet, it shows the

Sibling duo, Nada and Noor Alawi ventured into the world of fashion three years ago with the sole motive of Celebrating Art through Fashion. Trying to reinvent a classic accessory, they created the brand ‘Annada’; where beautiful art pieces are replicated on a scarf and stocked at Saks Fifth Avenue. Pallavi Ramesh had a quick tête-à-tête with the gorgeous ladies behind the brand.

“Every scarf created at Annada has four elements; art, fashion, romance;which is in the story and gifting; the way we package each piece. - Nada Alawi

withering of the carpet due to age,” explains Noor. As co-founder of the brand she is in charge of the operational and production side of the business. “Annada believes in the best quality, so we make sure that all our scarves are 100 per cent silk, there is hand hemming at all the ends and the signature of the artist is always on the scarf, because the concept is wearable art,” Noor tells us. With the launch of Annada’s Volume 5.1, they introduce new elements into the collection: “We are presenting a new fabric into our collection, which is cashmere and to follow after will be wool and cotton,” reveals Nada. The duo believes that the fabric should be such, that it beautifies the skin and is extremely comfortable. Making the conversation a little witty, we popped a fun question to both Nada and Noor. If you were a pattern on a scarf what would you be? Intrigued and put on the spot, Nada went first: “I feel I interchange or rather switch a lot, today I want to be a

flower but tomorrow I may feel like words or something more contemporary.” Noor excitedly says: “I love colours! As long as the colours are attractive and vibrant, I would like to be a pattern created by a group of colours.” Nada and Noor have displayed their brand ‘Annada’ at, Paris fashion week, Fashion Forward Dubai andmany other luxury exhibitions. They are very wellestablished in the GCC, Germany, Czech Republic and are next venturing in to China. We think fashion world domination and we couldn’t be more excited for what the future holds for these ladies – good luck!

Culinary Extraordinaire

He’s a self-taught baker, he presents two television shows, and he’s an ambassador for Taste of Abu Dhabi – did we mention he’s only 18? That’s right, Bader Najeeb Al Awadhi is one of the most talked-about young Emirati chefs in the country, and FACT caught up with the talented man to learn more about his passion for food…

88. fact magazine

FOODIE CORNER

Hi Bader! Describe the food scene in Abu Dhabi… The UAE is currently turning into one of the biggest pit-stops for food. Chefs, restaurants, and entrepreneurs from all around the world are coming to open up a restaurant here. Nowadays, almost every cuisine internationally can be found in the city. Food itself is starting to become more appreciated day by day. Tell us more about your cooking style and how you keep the Emirati heritage alive in your food… When it comes to cooking, I lean towards desserts more than main courses. I pick up recipes from different sources, learn their basics and techniques, then mix them up to make up something new and exotic. And when it comes to the Emirati heritage, I sometimes like to use traditional ingredients such as saffron and dates and add them to my modern ingredients to create fusions. Where did the journey into baking begin? I was around 13-14 years old when I started getting into baking. All I remember is that I was helping my mother bake a cake for a gathering. That’s where it all started. Have you faced any challenges being a young Emirati chef? People criticised me for being an Emirati guy who’s in the kitchen. Many saw it as a shame to culture. Although I felt like giving up, I realised that I had many people supporting me, and I did not want to let them down. So, I kept going and started opening people’s eyes to the fact that no hobby, dream, or career is restricted to a certain gender. What is it that you love about food and cooking professionally? It fascinates me how when different ingredients are

combined, something beautiful comes out of it. Also, good food brings people together. I also love how food makes you feel, especially when trying different cuisines! What’s it like being on TV and sharing your passion for food with the whole nation? At first, standing in front of the camera was nervewracking (there is proof on film as well, haha!). As the days went on, I started loving it. I also enjoy proving to people who doubted me that I’ve not failed, and that I’m still growing. I love teaching people and also learning from their experiences. Therefore, aside from my TV shows, I host my own Youtube channel which is very personal to me because it’s like a one-on-one class with my followers. I film, edit, perform, and publish the videos myself. I get to be who I am on there. Who are your foodie inspirations? I love the judges on Masterchef Australia, as well as Gordon Ramsey, Buddy Valastro, Duff Goldman, and Jamie Oliver. What’s your favourite thing to cook, and what’s your favourite food to eat? It’s hard to pick a favorite, so all I can say is that love baking French pate choux with crème patisserie. And when it comes to eating, I absolutely LOVE Mexican quesadillas! What’s your advice for other young Emirati chefs… Never doubt yourself, and age is never a restriction to start achieving your dreams. You’ve accomplished so much for being only 18 (congrats!) what are your future goals? (Thanks!) I’m currently working on a new TV show, and the theme is something that I’ve never done before! I’m also planning to attend a part-time culinary school to get the chef accreditation.

GO: The inaugral Taste of Abu Dhabi food festival will take place at Yas Island’s du Arena on November 6 to 8.

CHEF’S TABLE

“It’s comfort food at its best; it’s nothing elaborate, nothing extravagant. It’s just good food, cooked well, with simple flavours that stand out for me.”

92. fact magazine

Nothing compares to dining out at a venue that feels homely with a family atmosphere, and at the Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi you’re going to get just that. Chef Carl Moore has been the Executive Chef here for around two years, and everything from his approach to cooking, to the team he works with, and his welcoming demeanour, all makes us reminisce Sunday roast dinners with the family, and we quickly let Chef Carl in on the memories. “You know what, that’s Holiday Inn,” he says. “That really is Holiday Inn and the atmosphere we’re trying to create. “The atmosphere in the kitchen is also very relaxed; we don’t like shouting, in fact, we’re just like the rest of the hotel – calm and relaxed.” Chef Carl hails from Yorkshire in England, and when he first arrived in Abu Dhabi, some five years ago, he was giving cooking lessons as well as preparing food for VIP dinner parties held by Abu Dhabi’s rich and famous. Today, he oversees the smooth running of all the dining outlets at the Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi, including Lemon Tree, Silk Route Café, Hubbly Bubbly, Stay Fresh Café, and Thirty 1st Bar & Lounge. Knowing that Chef Carl works with such diverse menus, we were excited to see (and taste) his culinary creations. First up on to the table is pan-seared scallops with oyster mushrooms and strawberry gel. What sounds

like an unusual combination of flavours actually tastes fresh, light and delicious. The scallop is cooked to tender perfection and every spoonful is tastier than the last. “This food is what I do,” Chef Carl says. “It’s comfort food at its best; it’s nothing elaborate, nothing extravagant. It’s just good food, cooked well, with simple flavours that stand out for me.” Staying on the path to good food next up is Duck confit with balsamic roast fig, caramelised onion, foie gras, and edamame and fig jus. The presentation is fabulous and each component on the plate complements the duck beautifully. We especially loved the fondant potatoes and the balsamic fig gives the dish a sensational bitter sweet taste. Chef Carl says: “This dish is very autumnal. We marinate the duck for a day or so, add a little garlic, a little thyme, and some sea salt to draw out the flavours. Then we slow cook it for about four hours. “It’s a very bold dish, but you don’t have to do that much to it; it’s just about how you treat the ingredients and how you put it all together that makes it work,” he explains. For dessert we’re treated to a berry mascarpone with red velvet crumbs, and it’s the perfect sweet delight to top off a hearty menu. It’s clear as day that if you want to find a place to call your regular, the type of dining venue where staff become your second family; where variety is plenty ; and where you’ll want to go more than once a month – Chef Carl and his fantastic culinary team have your foodie needs covered at Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi.

VENUE REVIEW

Ushna at Souq Qaryat Al Beri is setting the standards for excellent Indian food in Abu Dhabi with its innovative menu, high quality service and desired location. FACT dined at the venue to see just what makes Ushna a popular dinner experience.

Both inside and outside seating at Ushna is near full on the evening we chose to dine there. This is a good sign and our party of three is all the more eager to feast on, fabulous food (it’s some of the best Indian food in the city, so we’ve heard). Ushna is a large venue with modern, stylish interiors adorned with deep, rich colours and wall décor inspired by Indian culture and heritage. The variety of comfortable seating to choose from is made up of a lively area for casual diners and, what was our favourite, a more intimate, private area decked out with big traditional, swing-style seating (found in a lot of homes in India). The ambience is laid-back though emanates elegance in an unpretentious manner, with friendly and welcoming staff catering to the guests’ requirements. As the weather had started to cool down, we opted for a table on the terrace outside, directly overlooking the stunning Grand Mosque. Our waiter, Ryan, was a breath of fresh air; knowledgeable, attentive and very sociable. He handed us the menu and our first impression was, ‘wow, this is Indian food?’ Ryan explained that Ushna combines classic North Indian cuisine with a contemporary twist. Intrigued by many of the dishes on offer, we ask him for his recommendations. We begin with a starter sampler of Usmaa Scallops, Dakshin Murgh, and Resha Galouti. The latter of the three was definitely the standout here; delicious shredded lamb patties and seasoned yogurt, smoked with screw

“ Dessert was a treat. A platter of Gulab Jaman, Kulfi and Gajar Halwa got us all talking about.. ” pine roots, inspired from traditional galouti kebab – simply mouth-watering. Some absolute musts on the menu are the Ushna Tandoor Sampler (the tiger prawns and lamb chops were the winners here), and from the mains you’ve got to have the Gosht Khada Masala, made up of succulent lamb pieces, and the Daab Chingri with its flavourful coconut and mustard gravy – both were delectable with the Kachumber and Dahi Ya Raita as accompaniments. Our dish of the evening was from the Chef ’s Corner. The one and

only Potliwala Murgh – slow-cooked whole spring chicken baked “en croute” with aromatic spices. Amazing is an understatement. The presentation of the dish in a huge pastry cocoon blew us away, but then we tried the chicken and we were left speechless, with only a lot of ‘mmm’ around the table. Delicious! Dessert was a treat. A platter of Gulab Jaman, Kulfi and Gajar Halwa got us all talking about our own adventures in India. Ushna also has a huge selection of premium vino and spirits, albeit a tad pricey, but to complete an impeccable dining experience this place has it all. Food that can evoke good memories is always worth going back for, so it’s no surprise that as we were walking out with our bellies full, there was already talk about the next visit to this beautiful venue.

Relaxing at Zayna Spa comes easy and effortlessly; the lighting is dim and intimate, the aroma sensual…

y visit to Zayna Spa was made all the more perfect because although I arrived an hour early for the treatment, I was shown to the large changing rooms where a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi awaited (make sure you bring your own swimwear). The facilities were simple but great! hat stood out for me the most was how well-trained the staff is. Sang had the answer to every question I asked about my treatment as well as the spa - it was rather refreshing. xpect nothing short of a fivestar experience with a laid-back atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, and welcomed relaxation at Zayna Spa.

Describe your ideal day off in Abu Dhabi… My ideal day off would start with a little

exercise and then good breakfast at the Beach House. I would then go and join in with an art workshop before heading to the beautiful Saadiyat Beach Club with friends. For a perfect finish to the day, I’ll enjoy a light dinner and chill out at Iris on Yas Island.

Recommend three outdoor activities in Abu Dhabi… Go on a boat trip; relax on one of the beautiful beaches or drive on the F1 track.
