ittle secret? (or not-so secret if you ask my friends), but June happens to be my favourite month of the year. Maybe I’m a little bias as it’s also the official reign of Gemini season and my birthday, but, more importantly, it’s the month when travel plans really start coming together for many of us. Some of you may be super organised and have already booked your summer getaways, whilst others will be looking for destination deals and narrowing down on dates. For me, it’s a combination of both that makes travelling so exciting. A few pre-planned journeys with a dash of spontaneous trips – that’s my level of wanderlust. With places like Kyrgyzstan, Malta, and Zanzibar on my bucket list this year, the road to the airport is always an exhilarating one. It’s only right that we bring you some much-needed inspiration to encourage your next holiday pick. With travel trends incorporating the weird and the wonderful, FACT has chosen some truly unique destinations for you to visit. Turn to p19 and embark on a Wild World, where we bring you Dark Tourism, Lesser-Known Europe, Curated Experiences and Solo Travel ideas. There’s, literally, something for every person – novice voyager to avid boarding pass collector! Of course, let’s not forget that being able to travel is also a privilege. We rarely stop to appreciate how easy it is for most of us to book the next flight, hop on a plane and stay in a beautiful hotel. So, for those of you who may want to keep things close to home or anyone who wants a quick break but doesn’t really want the hassle of flying somewhere, you’re still spoilt for choice right here in Abu Dhabi. Our staycation choices starting p28 are just a small insight into some of the city’s top hotels that offer everything from beach vibes to good food and luxury surroundings at their best. The expedition continues with our monthly Staycation Spotlight which takes us into the city to the iconic Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi for a few days of truly great hospitality (p48) as well as a glorious escape to what can only be described as a real-life paradise in our Globetrotter to The Residence Maldives (p42). We bid farewell to one of the most ground-breaking TV series of all time, Game of Thrones, and like many of you, I feel it was a rather mediocre end. But, much like my love for this show, my travel addiction lives on through frequent Skyscanner searches and random Booking.com moments. Cinema Time IMAGE NATION ABU DHABI’S UPCOMING RASHID & RAJAB HAS BEEN ACQUIRED BY INTERNATIONAL SALES AGENT AGC INTERNATIONAL, IN A DEAL SIGNED AT THE PRESTIGIOUS CANNES FILM FESTIVAL IN FRANCE. THE EMIRATI COMEDY WILL NOW BECOME AVAILABLE TO MARKETS AND POTENTIAL AUDIENCES WORLD-WIDE, FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF THE FILM ACROSS THE GCC THIS EID AL FITR.

GC International, the international sales and distribution division of AGC Studios in Hollywood, will provide RASHID & RAJAB with a platform to be distributed to exhibitors, broadcasters and streaming platforms globally. The comedy already has distribution within the MENA region by Tanweer Films, with a high-profile Eid release date throughout the GCC and an Egyptian release scheduled for later in the summer. Shot on location in Dubai, the UAE production is the first liveaction feature film from Emirati director Mohammed Saeed Harib, best known as the creator of the iconic animated TV series FREEJ. The film was produced by Emirati filmmakers Ali Mostafa (THE WORTHY, FROM A TO B) and Majid Alansari (ZINZANA), alongside Breakout Film’s Rami Yasin (SHABAB SHEYAB). The family-friendly comedy follows wealthy Emirati executive ‘Rashid’ (Marwan Abdullah Saleh) and carefree Egyptian fastfood deliveryman ‘Rajab’ (Shadi Alfons), who switch bodies after a freak accident on their way to work. As they desperately look for a way to revert to their former selves, the unlikely pair gain a different perspective into each other’s lives. “Once again, we are honored to partner with AGC Studios on the 8

LOCAL HOSTS Airbnb has announced that its global accommodation and experiences platform will be available in Arabic to enable its growing community across the Middle East and North Africa region to access an even more seamless travel experience.

THE LOCALISED WEB PLATFORM and iOS and Android apps are part of Airbnb’s ongoing commitment to the region and will further the company’s mission to create a world where anyone can belong anywhere. All of the popular features of the Airbnb platform will be accessible in Arabic: listing pages with thousands of homes bookable for great stays, experiences around the world and lots of content on how to travel or host with Airbnb. Airbnb has a strong and growing presence in Dubai and beyond: hosts and guests across the Middle East and North Africa region have been using the platform since it was founded 10 years ago to book accommodation globally or list their homes to welcome travellers. Airbnb has also released new data to show that across the Middle East and North Africa region more than 70,000 listings are now available to book on the Airbnb platform. As of January 1, 2019, in the UAE, 10,000 listings were available on the Airbnb platform and hosts in the UAE welcomed more than 145,000 guests from around the world - showing more than 63 per cent year-on-year growth. #MARRIOTT #INTERNATIONAL #CELEBRATES #10TH #ANNUAL #IFTAR #FOR #CABS As part of its ongoing commitment to the Holy Month of Ramadan, Marriott International celebrated the tenth annual ‘Iftar for Cabs’ initiative at participating Marriott International hotels in the Middle East and Africa, including over 50 properties in the UAE. During the hour of Iftar on Tuesday, May 14th , 2019, cab drivers who drove through the main entrance of any of the participating hotels received complimentary Iftar packs to break their fast. Catering teams at each hotel prepared Iftar packs, which included a diverse selection of food and beverage items. Associates from across various departments within the hotels, including Catering, Administration and Guest Services joined forces to bring the ‘Iftar for Cabs’ initiative to life.

DARK TOURISM It takes one historical event or Netflix Original Series to trigger a traveller’s curiosity. And though dark tourism isn’t something new, it’s definitely on the rise as many jetsetters cash in on more meaningful places to visit. Here are just three to inspire your next trip…

CHERNOBYL

RWANDA

Your interests don’t have to be morbid for this one but visiting the abandoned site of Chernobyl is like entering a haunting past and immersing yourself in history. Over a long weekend, explore the ghost town of Pripyat with its eerie and unsettling deserted playground, the Red Forest, and the New Safe Confinement structure around Reactor 4, which exploded back in 1986. You can even meet the few self-settlers still alive today who live inside the Exclusion Zone. To top that off, most pre-booked tours or packages will include a stay in Kiev, and a visit to the Chernobyl Museum for more in-depth stories about the disaster. The site has been reclaimed by nature and is a fascinating trip for an insight into what happens when dangerous environments are created by an accident. Fly to: Kiev with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul.

The small landlocked country of Rwanda is where the most recent and most brutal large-scale genocides took place in 1994. When it comes to Dark Tourism, the country’s many memorial sites are indeed one to shock and awe visitors. The Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre is the best known and most visited individual site for tourists to see, located near the centre of the capital Kigali, which also offers a few more sites of its own that are worth exploring. However, it is in Murambi where the reality of these atrocious tragedies come to life. A “display of the dead” shows possibly the darkest, starkest, grimmest, and most shocking side of humanity in that at Murambi whole bodies are on display, half-decomposed, half- mummified by lime, which turned the bodies white. The experience is gutwrenching and not for the faint-hearted. But, more importantly, it also serves to prevent genocide denial and acts as a memorial to the hundreds of thousands who were slaughtered. Fly to: Kigali with Kenya Airways via Nairobi.

DMZ BORDER If you desire to get a sneak peek into one of the most closed countries (North Korea) in the world, a visit to the DMZ is a must. Seoul, South Korea is the closet major city to the DMZ which can only be visited on an organised tour with a mandatory military escort. Be sure to pick a tour with good points of interest including; the Joint Security Area, which is where you have the chance to physically stand in North Korea itself and shop original North Korean items from the gift shop; then there’s the Mt Odu Observatory from where you can safely view day-to-day life in North Korea through free, ultra-zoomed binoculars; as well as the Infiltration Tunnels built in the 1980’s; and, lastly, Freedom Bridge which connects the two sides and could be used if ever they were to be at peace. At most, the DMZ is a place where you’ll gain more of an insight into a humanitarian crisis that the world does not know enough about. Fly to: Seoul with Etihad Airways, direct from Abu Dhabi. 20

LESSER-KNOWN EUROPE We’ve become more and more demanding about finding the next hidden gem and avoiding crowded tourist hotspots. Luckily, Europe has plenty to see that isn’t yet on every traveller’s radar. BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA Perhaps one of the most underrated cities in Eastern Europe, but also one of the most beautiful. Any city with an Old Town gets our attention, and Bratislava’s is really something to brag about. Quaint cafes line its many streets, and this is also one of the best places to experience the warm hospitality of the local people. Of course, there are many famous points of interest like the UFO bridge and the eponymous castle on the hill, the Blue Church or a day trip to Devin, just outside the city – you could easily spend a week or so here. unning until July 13, the exhibition traces the dissemination of photography as a form of presentation and documentation, and an instrument of discovering and understanding the world and its people, through a wide selection of over 250 historic photographs taken between 1842 and 1896. Organised by Louvre Abu Dhabi, musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac and Agence France-Muséums, and sponsored by the Bank of Sharjah, the exhibition includes some of the earliest photographs produced outside of Europe. The works on display include exceptional loans from musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, Bibliothèque nationale de France, musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet, l’Etablissement public du Musée d’Orsay, la Société de Géographie and La Cité de la Céramique – Sèvres & Limoges. The exhibition is curated by Christine Barthe, Head of the Photographic Collections Heritage Unit at the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac. HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said: “Louvre Abu Dhabi aims to tell the story of humanity, and photography is one of the most important tools that has contributed to the documentation of the history of the world and its diverse cultures. Photographs 1842 – 1896: An Early Album of the World is yet another testament to how Louvre Abu Dhabi brings the world to our city. The museum’s firstever photography exhibition complements Abu Dhabi’s colourful cultural landscape by giving visitors the opportunity to travel to new places and explore different regions of the world through the eyes of 19th century travellers.” The exhibition displays works by prominent international photographers, including Charles Guillain, a French ship’s captain who took part in a diplomatic voyage down the coast of Africa in 1847-48; Désiré Charnay, an archaeologist who photographed the first pre-Hispanic sites in Mexico; Marc Ferrez, the first Brazilian photographer to receive international recognition; William Ellis, an English missionary who travelled through Madagascar; Lai Afong a Chinese photographer who established one of the early photographic studios in Hong Kong; Kassian Cephas, the first Indonesian to become a professional photographer, and Egyptian military engineer Muhammad Sadiq Bey, who took the first photographs of the Holy 38

Places in Medina and Mecca circa 1881. The exhibition also presents a visual record of Auguste Bartholdi’s voyage to Egypt, Nubia (current day Sudan) and Palestine to photograph the principal monuments. This collection was his first and last interaction with the medium of photography, before he went on to sculpt the Statue of Liberty. Dr. Souraya Noujaim, Scientific, Curatorial & Collections Management Director at Louvre Abu Dhabi said: “Photographs 1842 – 1896: An Early Album of the World is the museum’s first exhibition dedicated solely to the medium of photography. Visitors will be able to discover some of the world’s earliest photographic images from across the world and get to know the stories behind the first photographers from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. This pioneer exhibition shows the dissemination and appropriation of this medium around the world – a technical revolution that changed, for good, the status of the image and the way it was used.” In an attempt to showcase the passing of using the medium of photography by European explorers to local authorities and rulers, the show presents the earliest photographic images from India by Lala Deen Dayal, an engineer by training who developed a passion for photography and opened several professional studios in different

Indian cities. During the Ottoman empire in Constantinople, otherwise known as modern day Istanbul, the Abdullah Brothers rose to fame by photographing the Ottoman elite and the new ruling classes. The show will also highlight historic photographs from the Philippines, including works by Pedro Picon, the creator of one of the earliest photographs in the country. An album from musée du quai Branly –Jacques Chirac, which is presented in the exhibition, contains an early selection of studio portraits in carte-de-visite format. Curtis on 25 and 26 of April. In this unique live concert, French musician Rodolphe Burger performs his musical interpretation of one of the most beautiful silent-movies ever made. Mixing electronic and Native American music, Burger improvises the score for this rare 1914 movie masterpiece, a Native American version of Romeo and Juliet, where love leads to war and murder. Entrance to the exhibition is free with the museum’s admission ticket. Admission is free for children under the age of 13. he Maldives represents a dream destination for many due to its pristine white beaches, turquoise lagoons and natural coral reefs teaming with marine life. An elusive destination often associated with honeymooners and a jet-setting crowd, The Maldives is a collection of 1,200 islands spread across 26 atolls and represents a destination that offers relaxation and luxury just four hours away from the UAE. Malé is the densely populated capital of Asia’s tiniest country (in terms of both population and land area) and acts as a transit point to one of the 132 resorts. Ours is the idyllic The Residence Maldives, on the remote island of Falhumaafushi, deep in the heart of the Indian Ocean approximately 45 miles north of the equator. Our journey to isolation involves a domestic flight to the island of Kooddoo, followed by a short speed-boat transfer. It’s all worth it as we glimpse the palm fringed shoreline and the quaint wooden buildings constructed with traditional Maldivian thatch. It’s immediately evident that we have arrived in paradise and at just 1km in length the island of Falhumaafushi (which means special flower island) offers a lot for travellers in a relatively compact space surrounded by crystal clear waters.

VILLA LIFE

The resort comprises 98 over-water and beach villas, dependent on your preference. Neither option will disappoint although the beach is perhaps better suited for those with young children. Postcards and Instagram posts of the Maldives have inundated us with images of bungalows hovering over crystal clear waters and bountiful coral reefs, so we were more than a little excited by the notion of residing in a one-bedroom over-water villa. Accessible via a wooden boardwalk jutting out into ocean, those situated on the north of island are positioned to garner the best sunrise views, while those on the south benefit from striking sunsets. Clocking in at a generous 156m2, our one-bedroom villa is an absolute dream and impresses thanks to an ability to blend the contemporary with the traditional. Decorated in neutral colours, the design predominantly features natural products such as wood and marble. Providing the villa with a feeling of being at one with the island that truly represents the ethos of a brand that mixes cultures and styles to provide each of its properties with a strong sense of place. The subtle interiors have been impeccably designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates and effortlessly combine traditional Maldivian features such as hand woven rugs with modern technology and minimalistic decor. There is no need for embellishment when the villa provides stunning views of the lagoon through glass doors bathing the space in natural light. Simply furnished with teak and rattan chairs, the living room segues into an extremely comfortable bedroom with a king-sized bed that is positioned to ensure guests awake to a view of the ocean. The bedroom also features ample closet space (there are two) and an LED television. Bathrooms are beautifully appointed with a large freestanding tub, double sinks and both indoor and outdoor showers. The outdoor deck is remarkable! Situated just above the tide line, the deck feels more like being on a boat and features a small plunge pool, sun loungers and a metal ladder leading directly into the inviting ocean. Life jackets and snorkeling equipment are provided, allowing guests to explore the lagoon and its tidal sandbanks directly from the comfort of the villa. Not a fan of the ocean? Not to worry! For sharks, stingrays, turtles and shoals of rainbow coloured fish are easily spotted from the deck, making this outside area a focal part of the villa experience and the ideal place for sundowners while watching one of the stunning sunsets that the Maldives are renowned for. Due to the location there is very little light pollution meaning as nightfall the sky fills with thousands of stars that gives the resort an almost ethereal feel by night.

RESORT FEELS

Bicycles are the preferred method of transport at The Residence Maldives. Although a complimentary buggy service is freely available, weâ€™d recommend taking the time to explore Falhumaafushi by navigating the sandy paths that traverse the island to find secluded beaches. The islands interior is made up of dense vegetarian forming a jungle-like environment. Here guests will find the health club, home to a large and well-equipped fitness centre, saunas and steam rooms. The gymnasium is appealing, clad in wood that provides the feeling of bringing the outside in. Glass walls give the impression of undertaking a workout within the depths of a tropical jungle which offers additional motivation.

SPA SENSATION

On the east side of the island lies the The Spa by Clarins, an exclusive to The Residence Maldives and the first and only Spa by Clarins in The Maldives. Taking inspiration from the over-water villas, six spa pavilions are positioned above the lagoon and can be utilised for massages and facials (these services can be offered invilla). The spa also features a salon and an open deck for meditation and complimentary sunrise yoga sessions.

KEEPING BUSY

Before visiting weâ€™d always assumed the Maldives to be a honeymooners destination but The Residence Maldives is extremely family friendly. The on-site kids club situated in a patch of verdant jungle close to reception boasts a modern playroom, private beach and a number of exciting activities. These include mocktail master classes, scavenger hunts, seed art and kids snorkelling, all presided over by the charismatic Alma who acts like a fairy godmother to the children in her care. Take to the water in the resorts beachfront infinity pool or visit the water sports centre for sailing, kayaking and windsurfing, all of which represent fun ways to see the ocean. With the hotel located on one of the deepest atolls in The Maldives, Falhumaafushi is a fantastic place for scuba diving and excursions. Our pick would be the sunset dolphin cruise where visitors can sip on bubbly will watching the playful mammals frolic in the surf.

CULINARY ESCAPADE

The Residence Maldives offering a choice of five restaurants that encourages the idea of relaxation the resort so freely promotes. A beach bar partly submerged in the communal swimming pool accommodates swim up cocktails and light bites, while the Library tucked away above the reception is a charming find with a fullystocked bar complemented by games of billiards or mini golf. The Dining Room is more than an all-day-dining experience, serving a varied buffet of international cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu changes daily and features a number of local Maldivian dishes that are complemented by tranquil lagoon views. It should be noted that chefs here are more than happy to accommodate dietary requirements or whip up special dishes for children without a moments hesitation. As night falls and groups of fruit bats flock to the island to hunt, it’s also dinner time for the guests. Regular seafood barbecue nights are held at the atmospheric Sunset Grill. Dine with your feet in the sand on lobster, shrimp, calamari and fresh catch of the day. All grilled to perfection. The fine dining surrounds of The Falhumaa are accompanied by a school of sharks that seem to have taken up residence in the shallow waters beneath the restaurant. Located at the end of a 230m long boardwalk the architecture has been designed to look like the flower of its namesake when viewed from an aerial perspective. With French cuisine in a fine dining setting, The Falhumaa requires a reservation and should be visited if only for the small bar area that could be coined as one of the island's best hidden secrets.

aving stayed in so many luxury, boutique, independent, five-star hotels all over the country – and the world – our expectations of hospitality are sky high. Walking into the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi, a hotel that is symbolic to the capital’s humble beginnings and its fast growth, we were expecting things to be a little outdated and modest. However, much to our pleasant surprise, any pre-notions we had were thwarted within seconds of speaking to the lovely front desk staff and manager, who welcomed us with the warmest genuine smiles and made check-in a very smooth process. With 565 rooms, suites and serviced apartments, Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi is no small feat. Every day, the hotel caters to hundreds of people visiting on holiday, taking a well-deserved staycation, or those choosing to dine at one of its not one, not two, but 12 dining destinations. And as we walk through the lobby, and around the hotel in the days to come, we begin to appreciate the scale of the hotel’s operations and how effortlessly the staff makes sure that every guest is looked after.

PREMIUM LIVING

With our key card in hand, we make our way up to the 16th floor to find a sprawling Premium Suite, larger than life (and possibly our own apartment too) which was to be home for the next few nights. Our first thought is “aaah comfort” – the entire set up reminds us of visits to stately English manors. There’s a real classic vibe, with plush furnishings – the carpet is spick and span, the chairs and sofa in the living room have a regal touch, and the bedroom is a large space divided into sleep/work/relax with a swish bed, a separate desk area and a neat corner with sofas. There’s plenty of storage and even the bathroom is big enough to possibly house another couple of beds! Talking of the bathroom, the very elegant black and white tiling and marble-clad décor is a real throwback to the cosy homes of aristocrats, and we love that the soaking tub has a window etched near it so you can kick back and admire the views in comfort.

At 145 sqm in size, you’d expect a good amount of outdoor space – and the Premium Suite doesn’t disappoint. Two private balconies boast waterfront or city views and a dining table with chairs. Our balcony wrapped around the entire suite, and we can imagine couples, small families and groups of friends really enjoying and making the most of this space during their stay. Amenities in the suite are abundant. The walk-in rain shower, luxury bathroom products, minibar, coffee and tea making facilities, bottled water, iPod docking station, two multi-satellite TVs, IDD and high-speed WIFI, voice mail and in-room safe are just some of the useful and luxurious features of the suite. If we had to describe this space in one word, it would be “tasteful” – ideal for guests who want to experience a characteristic touch and those who want ample space, alongside all the modern-day conveniences.

DINING PLEASURES

In all honesty, we would need another five pages just to fully rave about the food at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi. From our previous experiences, Rotana is a brand synonymous with good food, and if you want to see that justified, only you need to do is dine at one of the restaurants here. Let’s take Finz, a stunning seafood restaurant that serves up everything from impeccable Yellowtail Ceviche to a whole Sea Bass cooked in a blanket of salt, and scallops that amalgamate the freshest flavours and even one of the best chocolate molten cake desserts that we’ve tried in the city. Moving onto Indigo, the hotel’s Indian restaurant which is as elegant as its waiting staff. We bite into the most satiating paneer and a coconut-infused prawn curry, but it’s the special promo street food platter which is adorned with all kinds of street treats from North India, that truly showcases how good the cuisine is at Indigo. There’s pani puri, papdi chaat, samosa chaat, pakora and more. Accompanied by the right chutneys and dips, you have a winning combo of flavours that we still crave just thinking back to the dinner. fact magazine

If steak is on your mind, Rodeo Grill will tick all the boxes. In fact, it was the most surprising and enjoyable dining experience of our whole stay. The venue itself is a typical classy steakhouse with large sophisticated chairs and tables ready for diners to take their seat. Firstly, the Mango and Red Chilli mocktail blew us away – literally. A beautiful liquid concoction of colour and flavour. For starters, the Crab and Shrimp infusion and the stringy Truffle Fries were an absolute delight – and unlike anything we’ve tasted before. Our steak and Potato Gnocchi is cooked exactly how we requested it, with tasty sides like creamy spinach and grilled asparagus adding more textures to our palate. It was, however, the indulgent chocolate soufflé that stole the show. A moist, gooey chocolate centre topped with vanilla ice cream – this is the stuff of dessert dreams. What we noticed during EVERY single one of these meals was something that a lot of hotels now lack, but the Beach Rotana does flawlessly: consistency. That’s right, in every restaurant, the staff were exemplary. Knowledgeable, personable without being intrusive and very attentive, not just with us but also with other guests around us. The food was always the star of the night, as each culinary team gave their all to every dish that came out to our table. Ingredients were authentic yet innovative, expected yet surprising, and most of all satisfying. The truth is, on a staycation at Beach Rotana, you needn’t leave the hotel for your meals as everything from Italian to Japanese, Seafood, Indian, Polynesian and Middle Eastern cuisine, plus more is all available under one roof – and it’s REALLY worth trying.

SPA SUCCESS

City spas are often harder to execute because of their location in the middle of all the bustle. So, walking down to Zen the Spa, just off the back of the lobby, is like taking one step away at a time from all the noise of every day life. The labyrinth of serenity is decked out with ten treatment rooms, including two tranquility suites and relaxation areas. The spa team is professional and very

skilled. Try the 60-minute Balancing Facial and watch colour and life come back to a dull and tired complexion. Refresh and revitalise your skin with lavender, ginger and natural clay to absorb excess oils. Facials can be tricky as everyone has different skin types and the fear of breakouts always sets in. However, this treatment is an exception. If you have oily to combination skin, we would highly recommend this very results-driven facial which also includes a soothing head, arm and décolletage massage. Speaking of, when a complete overhaul is needed, we’d say to book Zen the Spa’s 90-minute Signature Massage. Achieve deep relaxation with the signature blend of warmed oils and a combination of massage therapies to balance the mind, body and soul. This was by far one of the best massages we’ve ever experienced – simply because the therapist listened to our areas of concern and took initiative to administer different techniques on those areas to tackle the muscles at hand. To say that we left feeling as light as a feather would be an understatement.

CHECKING OUT

As a city resort, Beach Rotana’s location is a prestigious one. Its direct connection to the shops, cinemas, and services of Abu Dhabi Mall give you just one more reason to choose it as your next staycation spot. It’s undeniably Arabian hoispitality and high standards of service add to the feeling of being treated with special attention as a guest. Plus, the expansive private beach club, complete with swimming pool, squash and tennis courts, watersports, kid’s club, and extensive gym make it the perfect choice for all types of travellers. Did we miss anything? When checking out, a bitter-sweet feeling sweeps over us. In such a short space of time, the Beach Rotana has made us feel at home and like a member of their extended family. There are very few hotels who can really do it all; great accommodation, fantastic food, excellent facilities and the best service. But the Beach Rotana is a real exception in this competitive hospitality landscape. Moreover, it doesn’t just do it all, it goes above and beyond to do it all very, very well. ✤

Each drawer, the high chairs, and even the separate laundry area in the pantry are all results of what happens when practical design meets a chic vision. Just like this one, every apartment is constructed with modern living in mind and furnished to the highest standards, offering a comfortable workspace, somewhere to cook and eat, to lounge and watch TV, and with high-end amenities that equal what’s inside with the stunning sea views outside. Moving into the bedroom; we absolutely didn’t expect there to be this much space. In fact, as far as serviced apartments go, this may be one of the most refined options of this calibre in the city. The bathroom is also a great size with a gorgeous tub, walk-in shower and separate WC. Here, storage is key, in comparison to other serviced apartments that we’ve stayed in, we applaud the people who put this apartment’s furnishings together. There is SO much wardrobe space both in the bedroom and also out in the living area and kitchen. If you’re planning to stay longer than a weekend break, this is one trip where the saying “everything but the kitchen sink” doesn’t apply – you can literally pack whatever your heart desires. All the regular amenities you’d find in a hotel, including complimentary Wi-Fi, an Interactive Television System, in-room safe, IP phone and voicemail, media hub with multimedia connectors, bathrobes and hairdryer, toiletries, iron and ironing board, plus a mini bar too, are still present here – should you even leave? For a serviced apartment, those in charge of making these residences the success story that it has become, you’ll find two restaurants – Acacia and Al Yasmine Lobby Lounge within the building. Breakfast in style at Acacia, a modern and spacious venue offering an international buffet to suit all tastes, or have a coffee, snack or light meal with colleagues, family or friends in Al Yasmine Lobby Lounge where the atmosphere is super relaxed. You also have plenty of in-room dining options as well as 12 mighty dining experiences at Beach Rotana hotel next door. We certainly didn’t go hungry! Probably the most surprising moment of them all is when we went to get a workout in at Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club. Wow! This place is sprawling – there’s a huge variety of the best in Techno Gym equipment and lots of free-standing weights and other exercise tools to help you keep your regime exciting, varied and on point. The views are magnificent as Cleveland Clinic and its surrounding waters gleam in front of us courtesy of the floor to ceiling windows. If it’s motivation you need to work out, here’s where you’ll find it. Of course, the perks of being at the residences is that you can head next door to the Beach Rotana hotel complex where the line-up of leisure and wellness activities is extensive. Make the most of the private beach club featuring a swimming pool, kids’ pool, squash and tennis courts, watersports, kids club and another Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club, or indulge yourself at Zen the Spa where the list of bespoke treatments range from Rasul mud experiences to sumptuous spa baths. A special shout-out goes to Charles at the front desk. All the staff were incredible, however, Charles' warm smile and friendly greetings - no matter what time of day it was - put us in a good mood, every time. Capturing the inner city life experience can be difficult for a property that is SO fresh and contemporary, but the Beach Rotana Residences hits the nail on the head. Comfortable, convenient and appealing for a long list of reasons, there’s a good chance that a staycation here will have you planning to move right in! ✤

f you don’t know much about car specs and tech, we’ve got your back. After all, driving is first and foremost about comfort, easy usability and, of course, great safety. For some, engine size, customised wheels and grilles, and onroad performance is at the forefront, whilst others look at driving through a practical lens: get from A to B safely, drive smoothly on the highway while sitting in utter comfort, and do this all in an aesthetically appealing vehicle. Jaguar hears you. And they’ve answered with the all-encompassing Jaguar F-Pace S. Jaguar is a car manufacturer that has grown its reputation as one of the world’s best for luxury sedans, and now the car giant is departing towards more unpretentious sophistication in design and relentless innovation in specs. They still care about what’s under the hood and the car’s performance, but they also give ample care towards driver comfort and features that aim to make this the best drive of your life – no exaggeration. Let us tell you how and why. First off, it’s imperative to mention that the Jaguar F-Pace remains as one of the most important vehicles for the manufacturer. It’s helped to bring in a younger demographic as well as more genderdiverse drivers too. In part because this SUV line-up really offers something for everyone. The Jaguar F-Pace S is no exception. Built on the same platform (Lightweight Aluminum Architecture) as the entry-level XE sedan and the more upscale XF sedan, the 2019 F-Pace is offered in six distinct trim levels, however, we were testing the upmarket F-Pace S, which for most buyers will satisfy the need for performance, luxury and utility in one. Setting you up for impressive performance, the F-Pace S gives you the choice of either a 3.0 litre V6 300PS Twin Turbocharged Diesel or a 3.0 litre V6 380PS Supercharged Petrol engine, and will take you from 0-100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. Sitting on 20-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels and sporting red brake calipers, the S looks every inch the sporty ride that it is. The S-branding on the outside sets this model apart from the other trim levels and the Adaptive Dynamics system allows the driver to modify the response of the vehicle to conditions and driving style. In fact, the AWD system in the F-Pace is made more effective still by Jaguar’s Adaptive Surface Response (AdSR) technology. AdSR (which requires the fitment of Adaptive Dynamics) adapts the maps of the throttle, transmission and DSC system according to the type of surface. When fitted, AdSR replaces Rain, Ice, Snow mode in the JaguarDrive Control system, AdSR operates throughout the vehicle’s entire speed range and enables even finer optimisation

of the vehicle’s systems to make the most of the available traction, helping the driver to make smooth progress even in the most challenging conditions. There’s a mode for low-friction surfaces such as snow and ice, and one for medium-friction surfaces such as wet tarmac or gravel – which would come in very handy on those unexpected rainy days in the UAE, and there’s the third mode for high-drag conditions such as deep gravel to further exploit the vehicle’s inherent capability. So, whereas on a slippery surface, for example, a very progressive throttle map will be selected, you’ll find a much more aggressive map is used for deep gravel because the engine has to build up torque very quickly to help the vehicle to maintain momentum. Another key benefit of AdSR is that the system automatically switches modes to suit the conditions, leaving the driver free to concentrate on driving. The transition takes place quickly – around four seconds – and seamlessly. Again, driver comfort comes to mind – the makers of this F-Pace model have accounted for a variety of driving conditions that you could face, and have allowed for the car to adjust to your own driving needs. Having driven the car in the busy pedestrian streets of downtown Abu Dhabi to the stretching E11 up to Dubai and in many residential development areas, we can safely say that it delivers a more comfortable ride at slower speeds and better handling at cruising speeds than most of the mid-size luxury crossovers in its segment. And though the F-Pace S weighs in at a hefty 1,861 kg (4,102 lb), but with a body made up of 80 per cent aluminum, it is a manageable weight that allows the vehicle to corner and handle well. Some of the standout features and specs of the Jaguar F-Pace S come in the realm of safety. Advanced vision sensors will enable highly automated and autonomous driving functions in the near future. Such a sensor is already fitted to this vehicle, and this forward-facing stereo camera is at the heart of the advanced driver assistance systems. Providing a highly accurate real-time view of the road and objects ahead, the stereo camera underpins the Emergency Braking system, which features a pedestrian detection function. If the system’s controller determines that a collision with a vehicle or a pedestrian is imminent, full braking is initiated automatically.

The stereo camera also provides the intelligence for the Lane Keep Assist (LKA) system. By monitoring the vehicle’s position relative to lane markings either side, LKA can guide the driver back towards the centre by applying a small amount of countersteering through the electric power-assisted steering system. The torque applied to the steering wheel can be easily over-ridden by the driver. Forward Traffic Detection is designed to assist when forward visibility is restricted. Included when Surround Camera Systems is fitted, it uses a discreet forward-facing camera in the grille, the system detects items crossing the path of the vehicle and provides a visual warning on the central screen when a potential hazard is detected. Forward Vehicle Guidance is fitted as part of the optional 360º Surround Camera and helps drivers to place the vehicle when completing low speed manoeuvres. Working in conjunction with the front parking sensors the system provides a visual representation of the vehicle overlaid with wheel projections showing the alignment of the steering. Drivers can also see the parking distance reading on the central screen, taking the stress out of tight manoeuvres. Drifting out of lane can be caused by driver fatigue as well as inattentiveness, and this can be identified by periods of little or no steering activity followed by sudden or excessive inputs. Fitted as standard, the F-Pace’s Driver Condition Monitor system recognises these patterns, and, by also checking activation of brake and accelerator pedals, will display a multi-stage visual warning in the instrument panel to prompt the driver to take a break. With the amount of commuters on the road, driving between the all the different emirates as well as visitors to the country being driven around, the highways of the UAE can at times become a daunting place to drive. In contrast to that, tight, narrow streets around areas like Bur Dubai and Deira can also be challenging to navigate, so the fact that the F-Pace S has all the tools required to tackle every road situation with safety in mind, is definitely a winning element for us. Inside, the F-Pace is roomy and comfortable. It’s a true fiveseater with a spacious, luxurious interior featuring the premium

materials, craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail that gives every Jaguar its unique sense of occasion. The ‘Sports Command’ driving position provides an authoritative, confidence-inspiring view out but retains a sports car feel. Jaguar’s cosseting sports seats are shaped to provide exceptional comfort and support and are available with 10-way adjustment and fourway lumbar support, heating and cooling, and refinements such as, contrasting twin-needle stitching and embossed headrests. The attention to detail continues with a frameless rear view mirror, illuminated metal treadplates with Jaguar script, bright metal pedals, premium carpet mats, suedecloth headlining, chrome seat switches on the 10-way adjustable seats and optional carbon fibre door finishes. fact magazine

he Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi is home to some of our favourite food venues in the capital. It offers so much choice when it comes to dining. Hoi An, the hotel's authentic Vietnamese restaurant is popular for its faraway flavours and interesting ingredients, and still remains one of the only quality Vietnamese restaurants in the city. This warm eatery is tucked away downstairs in the hotel just off to the side of the popular Sofra BLD. It’s about as authentic as Vietnamese restaurants come without being tacky or cliché. There’s beautiful colonial style furniture and traditional décor with wooden-esque, Asian-style fans on the ceilings and mismatched framed portraits on the wall. Sitting amongst the multi-coloured paper lanterns is a lovely feeling and the staff are friendly and attentive. We enjoy the views overlooking the water and beyond to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The menu offers loads of great choices divided up into signature dishes, entrees, salads, soups, curries and mains so you will be spoilt for choice. To start with, go for the Coconut Prawns (a signature dish) and the Vietnamese fresh Rice Paper Rolls. The rolls are beautifully presented and come with a delicious homemade chilli fish dipping sauce – they’re devoured quickly. You can choose a vegetarian option for these or go for either chicken or prawns. These are a must-order and set the scene for a delicious dinner. The coconut prawns are also a hit, again presented nicely with large tasty prawns covered in a crispy batter served with fruit salsa and sweet chilli sauce.Just delicious. For mains we go for the Pad Thai Noodle and the Yellow Curry. For both these dishes again you can choose different meat options or go vegetarian. We choose chicken for the yellow curry and it’s perfectly creamy and full of delicious spices. It comes served with a cucumber relish and rice and really hits the spot. The Pad Thai is also very tasty with its noodles, egg, prawns bean sprout and tofu. Both portions are very generous and perfect for sharing, plus they’re so tasty that we manage to finish off both. For desert we can't go past the Sticky Rice Mango which is full of fresh flavours – the mango adding the perfect touch to end the meal rather than a very heavy dessert. Hoi An provides an excellent dining experience and the freshness of the food and combination of flavours is second to none with a mix of traditional and modern Vietnamese dishes of high quality. We can guarantee there’s nothing else like it in the entire city – and that alone is a great reason to book your table and give it a try! ✤ 80

FACT’s Shabana Adam visits their newest branch at Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi Downtown to see if it follows suit… fact magazine

reakfasts became legendary, whilst lazy brunches and flat whites paved the way for the foodie crowds who came to love Jones the Grocer for its reliable quality and straight-talking menu in Sydney. Fast-forward to the brand going international and coming to our shores, and here we are at the newest branch in downtown. The dining crowd is steady on a Monday lunch time, and we’re peeking at other guests’ tables to see what tasty dishes they’ve ordered whilst we’re taking pictures of the bistro-style venue. We weren’t only inspired by others’ plates, we were struck by the elevated finishes and very classy yet casual finishings of the décor. Big neon signs create a fresh and electric vibe with words like “gourmet food for everyday living” and “good ideas start with great coffee” etched into the walls. We instantly relate and feel completely at ease in these surroundings. The restaurant is big with good-sized tables for a leisurely lunch or dinner as well as a fully-licensed bar and a varietyfilled gourmet grocery area, complete with larger-than-life separate cheese and meat cabinets which stand side by side, fronted with glass so that customers can easily see the products in all their glory. An entire wall of racks is topped with the finest chocolates, crisps, biscuits, oils and other condiments that give Jones the Grocer its unique identity. In simple terms, this is where the boujie shop, but it’s also where we’d likely drop in for a grocery treat once in a while – we’ve got our eyes on those Protein Shop Peanut Butter Truffles! Of course, if there’s one thing that lends to Jones the Grocer’s success, it’s the hearty, good-for-you food. The menu is a real treat, truly catering to every dietary preference, including some excellent vegetarian options. The hardest part? Narrowing down your choices will leave you making a mental note of the the items you didn’t order – for your next visit. We begin with their Signature Grilled Steak Salad. An unusual one as steak isn’t really our usual go-to for salad, but we’re happy with this choice. A generous helping of fresh greens is mixed with thin avocado slices and beautifully-cooked pieces 84

of steak, topped with crushed nuts and caramelised onions. Needless to say, the combination of textures and flavours is a pleasant surprise, and the salad doesn’t feel heavy at all. Next up, the Peanut and Citrus-Glazed Spicy Prawns are exactly what we wanted them to be. Coated in sesame lime mayo, the sticky bites are made for those who love a little spice. Squeeze some lemon on top, wrap a prawn with the side lettuce and voila – you have the perfect comfort appetiser. SO good. Our favourite dish had to be the Burrata with balsamic glaze, cherry tomatoes, candied nuts and chargrilled sourdough. Presentation is lush, and the fresh, colourful tomatoes add not only a visual dynamic to the dish but also a tasty one. The Burrata is creamy and packed with a gorgeous tang from the balsamic – winner. For mains, the Braised hot salt beef sandwich with gherkins, sauerkraut, and honey mustard mayo on caraway seed brioche is a total blow away. You can literally taste the care that’s gone into the preparation of the dish. From the sourcing of high quality ingredients to the combining of flavours – this intricate sandwich is one you should tackle with all the enthusiasm you can muster. Topping that off, that Battered Atlantic Cod with thick cut chips, minted pea purée and home-made tartar sauce is a moment of

reminiscing for us. Being from England, we often find it hard to find a good fish and chips option made with actual cod – alas, we may have just discovered the one. The hearty dish is the perfect portion size to share! Desserts are abundant at Jones the Grocer. Ranging from homemade tarts to cakes, éclairs, crumbles, macaroons and more, those with a sweet tooth won’t leave disappointed. We’d recommend the Mixed Berries and Meringue Tart or for a savoury end, the Artisan Cheese Plate which comes with Manchego Curado, Brie Maubert, Shropshire Blue and is served with olive oil lavosh and quince paste. To wash it all down, you have one of the widest varieties of drinks we’ve encountered in a café before. From cold pressed juices to smoothies, cordials, organic soda, milkshakes, iced drinks, fresh juices and more, you’ll be hard pressed not to find your favourite flavour or fruit concoction. We opted for the Chai Latte which did the hot drinks justice. Jones the Grocer is the type of place that encourages diverse dining; business lunches, after-work drinks, brunch catch ups, breakfast meetings, lazy dinners – you name it, and they’ll cater to it. And its ideal location in the heart of Downtown means that this community has just upped its culinary game a notch with a brand that delivers exactly what we want and expect every single time. ✤

TAKE THE BAIT Consistency is key when it comes to dining in the UAE capital and we’re pleased to note that seafood speciality restaurant Catch successfully manages to maintain strong service standards and excellent food, four years after opening. FACT’s David Tapley dines at the recently awarded ‘Best Seafood Restaurant’ at the FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi 2019… fact magazine

atch’s calibre continually impresses diners with a menu of ‘haute cuisine’ strongly influenced by Asia. The location offers much of the venue’s appeal. Perched upon a pristine strip of sand within the Nation Riviera complex on the Corniche, the views across the Arabian Gulf to Lulu Island are just as exciting as the cuisine. The restaurant’s design elements completely lean into the seafood concept and rather than opting for the expected nautical-inspired interiors, the space is far more modern. Sleek lines define a venue of brilliant whites that re-emphasises the notion of being at the beach. Driftwood perches upon tabletops, light bulbs are strung with entwined fisherman's ropes and the sushi counter is fronted by a pattern of embossed fish scales. All nods to the sea that help to build a relevant connection to the excellent food. Upstairs lies a rooftop lounge ideal for an early evening sundowner, while the main restaurant boasts a wrap-around terrace that practically sits on top of the sand. Service remains one of the restaurant's defining factors with a style that is efficient and allows for rapport to be built easily. Staff are well versed in the nuances of the food and beverage lists and a theatricality comes into play with concoctions served within conch shells and glassware made to resemble a bloated pufferfish. All helping to subtly enhance the seafood theme. Under the guidance of Executive Chef Kavish Chimajee, Catch champions fresh produce, allowing even simple combinations of ingredients to transcend expectations in a bid to promote flavour. A perfect example of this is the seabass ceviche (AED69). Plated with pickled onion, sweet potato and a vibrant bell pepper dressing. The dish is exquisite and visually appealing with the sea bass rolled and adorned with edible flowers, taking on the appearance of an elaborate crown. An organic quinoa (AED79) presented beneath a glistening bell jar brings together watermelon and feta cheese with a sweet red bell pepper coulis. Elevating the trending superfood to more than just a salad in which different flavours come to the fore with each individual mouthful. Similarly, the signature sushi platter (AED209) adds an additional dimension to the dining experience. Arriving amidst billows of smoke and elaborate sculptures carved from ice. Accompanied by fresh wasabi root, grated at the table, we throughly enjoy the California Rolls comprising of jumbo crab, orange tobiko and spicy mayonnaise, alongside three choices of sashimi - yellowtail, sea bass and salmon - which are cut thicker than expected and exemplify the Catch ethos of using only the freshest ingredients. The varied menu isn’t all about seafood and provides

an inclusive choice that caters to the requirements of both carnivores and vegetarians too. Don’t miss the braised short ribs (AED89) bringing together bite-sized cubes of tender short rib, topped with pomelo (a fruit from the citrus family), carrot pickle and sesame seeds. The meat is braised and fried, before braising again, resulting in a remarkable texture that’s crisp on the outside while beautifully tender within. While the menu has clearly been designed for sharing. Each dish can rightfully be hailed as a signature. Main courses encompass the everpopular choice of black cod, Canadian lobster, grilled prawns and Hokkaido scallops (AED199). The scallops have the shellfish plated with pumpkin risotto and a yuzu saffron sauce, before being crowned with a circular squid ink tuile topped with caviar. A gastronomic delight which plays with luxury ingredients, we're happy to learn that the scallops are harvested in Japan and characterised by their firmness and subtle sweetness. Ingredients come to the fore again with the Wagyu Beef. Available in various cuts and presented to the table on a barbecue amidst two varieties of mushrooms and a rich and flavoursome mushroom and beef jus that complements the meat perfectly.

Desserts continue the high standards with the chocolate sphere (AED65) resembling a Pokemon ball thanks to a unique white and red colouration. The smooth sphere of chocolate shows no signs of imperfection until a warm chocolate sauce is poured on top, thus melting the exterior to reveal an interior loaded with chocolate brownies, kumquat compote and the nostalgia of popping candy. For something less decadent, the coconut (AED49) is a lighter option that brings together the contrasting textures of coconut panna cotta and tapioca, with a fresh mango and passion emulsion that leaves a lasting impression of tropical flavours. Catch is the epitome of destination dining and the experience is representative of a meal that we don’t want to end, no matter how many times we visit. As one of the strongest culinary eateries in the city, Catch’s cuisine blends together seafood, superfoods and high quality ingredients into an epicurean expedition that we can only describe as “gourmet artistry.” ✤

SMASHING IT Need some motivation for a new fitness class with amazing results? Angela Beitz speaks to Dahlia Abduljawad and Leila Kouri from F45 at Zayed Sports City to chat about Aussieborn F45 Training, that's taking over the fitness scene all around the world. Tell us a little bit about F45 here in Abu Dhabi? F45 Zayed Sports City is the brainchild of three female partners with diverse corporate backgrounds, one a banker, one an investment banker and one working in the fashion industry. Although their experiences are widely varied, their love for F45 is mutual with all three ladies being former members of F45 before deciding to open their very own studio. What does F45 stand for and how does it work? The F in F45 stands for functional, because while the classes change constantly to build variety into your routine, they all focus on functional training. (In other words, expect exercises that mimic things you might do in your everyday life, like picking up a heavy piece of luggage.) The 45 is simply the length of a class — each F45 session is just 45-minutes long. F45 uses innovative technology, with the movement TV’s around the room so you know exactly where to go and what you are doing. This takes the confusion out of the classes and frees up the trainers to deliver 1-1 personal experience to each member. It promises to be unlike any group fitness class you've attended before, and not just because you're bound to learn some new moves. F45 not only accommodates all fitness levels, but also champions every single person who comes to class. What can people expect from a class? F45 is a group fitness studio and instead of moving in unison with your teammates, you'll use equipment in different stations and pods. Each class has a theme, like Renegade (focus on resistance), Docklands (cardio), and Gravity (bodyweight). Along with the trainers in the room, screens throughout the space provide demos of each exercise, as well as a timer and a measure of your heart rate (if you're wearing one of F45's heart rate monitors). You'll typically go through a circuit of all the moves at least twice, and the music and circuit specifics will change with each class so you'll never get bored. While you'll move through these circuits on a more individual basis, you're still part of a group fitness class, and you'll never feel like you're lacking the same encouragement or motivation. There's a sense of camaraderie at F45, with the coaches and your fellow teammates cheering you on as you go, so you'll always have the strength you need to power through your workout. Why do you think the F45 phenomenon has taken off and become so popular? F45 Training merges 3 separate (High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Circuit Training, and Functional Training) leading-edge fitness training styles into one, consummate and compelling group training experience for its members, keeping the members engaged and having fun. If you don’t enjoy what you do, you wouldn’t do it and the same can be said for fitness. The fusion of these three training concepts has led to the development of 36 different, 45-minute workout experiences, with more in development by our F45 Athletics Department. This keeps the program from getting repetitive whilst driving results for our members. This combination of interval, cardiovascular and strength training has been proven to be the most effective workout method for burning fat and building lean muscle. 90

How important is diet? Does F45 also offer nutritional advice? Nutrition is one of the most important factors in health and wellbeing. It is key that people eat a well balanced diet, consisting of carbohydrates, fats and proteins as well as mineral and vitamins. Optimal nutrition coupled with regular exercise is where people will witness real results. Think of foods that grow out of the ground or once had a heartbeat. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you can also get a healthy dose of each. F45 has a Challenge Portal, in there you will find nutrition plans, split in to 3 options, mainstream, vegan and vegetarian. This portal gives you weekly shopping lists, recipes and cooking instructions for each meal and includes the nutritional values for every plate (if you’ve decided to track macros, this is very handy). The app also gives you access to loads of information about the challenge, from why you’re eating certain foods to tips on how you can stay motivated, to articles on what to avoid whilst training etc. What are the most important factors a person needs to take on in terms of changing their body and becoming fit and healthier? Making that first step is the most important. Step in to the gym and take each day as it comes. Make small changes so its not overwhelming, and we can help you a long the way. Consistency is the most important factor, from nutrition to training. ✤

strokes. Once the scrub is complete, the body wraps is then done to further enhance hydration of my skin. Once my entire body is covered in the hydrating aloe vera marine algae, it is wrapped in light plastic and then covered in a heated wrap so that my skin sweats and can fully detox. While this is happening for about 20 minutes my head is massaged with an algae mud to soothe dry locks. I then take a shower and its advised to use no soap, just a rinse of all the product and my skin is very smooth and hydrated. A tailor made aromatherapy massage takes place after I shower, leaving me with a sense of well-being, cleansing and revitalisation. There are different ones you can choose from; Detoxifier, De-Stresser, Muscle Relaxer, Jet-Lag Reviver, Immune Booster, Energiser, and Body Toner. I choose the Detoxifier massage and I also go with a clove and lavender oil which is great for muscle pain and to detoxify out sore muscles. The massage is wonderfully calming but still hits all my sore spots and leaves me floating on air. My entire body is boosted and bright and I feel completely refreshed; both the body scrub and massage has worked wonders on my skin. This is a total body makeover and a really nice treat especially if your skin is super dry and needs some love or you are just feeling stressed and need to get away from it all for a few hours. Be sure to try the amenities which are wonderful, with a private beach and a plunge pool, perfect for pre or post treatment relaxation. ✤

ESPA at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal has been a firm favourite for FACT, and last year they were strong winners at our first Spa and Wellness Awards. Located at 5-star resort, ESPA offers super soothing and relaxing treatments and boasts its own ESPA range of products. I'm trying the ESPA Body Ritual which is a deeply rejuvenating 120 minute treatment. This top-to-toe therapy combination revives skin and energy levels restoring vitality and combines a body wrap and massage to restore the skin and I can't wait to see the results. This spa visit came at the perfect time as my body was sore and tired and my skin was a little bit dehydrated. I'm shown to the changing rooms and pop on a plush robe and comfy slippers and I start off with a half an hour in the steam room and sauna as my therapist says this will help me unwind before the treatment and also to sweat out some of the toxins in my body. I'm then shown to the serene treatment room and we start with a foot scrub while chatting about any specific needs for today’s treatment. We begin with a full body dry brushing to get the circulation pumping and to also remove any flaky skin. Then, a lemongrass sea salt scrub is used to further boost circulation and to get rid of any dead skin cells all over the body. SKIN SOLUTIONS Want to totally overhaul your skin this summer? FACT's Angela Beitz heads to NStyle for a results-driven facial.

Style is a popular spot in the capital providing women with the ultimate in beauty services including facial, body and massage therapy, hair removal and nail treatments and it’s a firm favourite here at FACT. NStyle have now added the popular Hydrafacial experience to their services and I’m trying it out to see if it lives up to its rave reviews. One of the main reasons that this facial is super popular is that is combines the cleaning and detox approach of a deep cleanse facial mixed with hydration with no down time. I’m visiting the Yas Mall branch and the staff are super friendly. I am shown to the treatment room and change into a towel to begin the 90-minute Deluxe Hydrafacial. My skin is double cleansed and then assessed to see areas of concern. The Hydrafacial machine has many tools that are used throughout the facial for maximum results. My skin is firstly massaged with the suction part of the Hydrafacial machine to help with lymphatic drainage and to get rid of toxins. Then it’s onto the main part of the facial where the pen of the machine is used (it works as a vacuuming action to exfoliate dead skin cells and rid the skin of excess oil while pumping back in a hydrating serum). A glycolic and salicylic acid is deposited onto the skin through the tip, the pore opening is widened, allowing the vacuum suction to dislodge and suck up nastiness from deep inside. Unlike with some manual extractions, strong pressure isn’t used, making the whole de-gunking process a lot gentler and completely pain-free. My face is then massaged with a serum and a heavy hydrating mask that is applied over the entire face including eyes and mouth. The mask plumped my skin beautifully and the whole experience left my complexion, bright, glowing and hydrated. The treatment concludes with LED Light Therapy (both red and blue to combat ageing and bacteria). The treatment is gentle and non-invasive and when my therapist showed me a container of cloudy liquid complete with floating particles that had been collected from my pores, I could literally see how much this facial really works on the skin. Afterward, my face was clear and hydrated from the deep cleaning, with absolutely no redness and it’s perfect for the climate here to combat dryness and congestion and works for both normal and sensitive skin types. Highly recommended. ✤

KEEP IT FRESH Skin woes? Breathe life back into your complexion with an Environ Oxygen Facial at Scintillia Spa. FACT’s Angela Beitz went to try this excellent treatment…

e are big fans of Scintillia Skincare and have visited this lovely spa before for all our beauty needs. This is a truly bespoke skin spa that is a real hidden gem in the city. It has only two treatment rooms and usually only caters to one client at a time and uses amazing skin care brands such as Eve Lom and Linda Meredith. The space is located in Muroor (they also have a another location on Reem Island which is a beauty salon) and is a chic sanctuary with white and silver decor with added touches of ornate mirrors and stunning orchid displays and stepping into this space will quickly make you feel relaxed. I chat through my skincare concerns with the therapist and fill out a consultation form. My complexion is feeling a little oily and congested on the T-zone and dry elsewhere so they've chosen the Environ Oxygen Facial for me - to get some balance back into the skin. The therapist is attentive and lovely and talks us through all the steps that she will be doing which is good to know that the staff are knowledgeable and caring. Environ facials really tap into key concerns and you'll see instant results. Vitamin A is the cornerstone ingredient in the Environ skin care philosophy. The brand has been developed by Dr Des Fernandes, rated amongst the top five plastic surgeons in the world. This brand has gained a solid reputation over the years as it is a pioneer in using high concentration of active ingredients such as Vitamin A, peptides and high

doses of antioxidants to combat environmental and physical aging of the skin. Oxygen is nature’s most powerful healing element and has been used in the medical industry on various skin conditions for many years. Breathing oxygen into the skin, this procedure visibly plumps and firms the skin, and this can be seen with just one treatment. After a lovely foot ritual, I lay on the treatment bed which is comfortable with a duvet and lots of cushioning. These facials have been designed to create a unique treatment for each client by addressing their individual requirements. The skin is cleansed on the surface followed by a second deeper cleanse. Then a thorough consultation is carried out by the therapist to assess any skin problems and it's evident we have some small fine lines and some pigmentation issues. A scrub is then applied to my face to kill dead skin cells and a boosting serum is applied to plump the skin, which is then steamed to open pores and extractions are done. This is followed by a natural micro-peel serum which removes dead cells and cleans deep beneath the surface. The oxygen is applied all over the face and neck in small on and off motions – it feels cool and refreshing. Next, a beautiful hydrating mask is applied to my complexion while my shoulders and arms are massaged. I leave feeling totally relaxed and my skin is bright, plump and clear. Scintillia really excels in tailor made facials to suit all skin needs and mixes traditional facial procedures with expert brands and the latest technology. ✤

What are some of your favorites cultural hotspots in Abu Dhabi and why? - Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is my favourite. It is a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture and design and the mix of lighting and decoration is breathtaking. - Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Middle East’s most spectacular museum. I love art and the Louvre is a great place to relax and research artworks of cultural, religious and historical importance. - I’m also very much inspired by my environment in the places I live. I am flexible when it comes to adapting to new situations and places, which I feel translates into my cooking.

Share with us some of your personal and professional goals for the rest of the year... To work closely with underperforming team members in order to identify where the problem is and try to solve it in order to make them more productive. I want to transmit my knowledge to my colleagues and build a successful team, which will in turn increase our culinary offerings. I love to bring the seed of an idea into the kitchen and then work with my chefs to refine it. It’s important that as an Executive Chef you lead your team in the right direction and treat people as individuals with respect.
