Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

S

omething that you might not know about the magazine industry is that, in all its glamorous glory, it really never sleeps! Being in the media, especially in the Gulf, is somewhat of a 24/7 dedication – from research and writing to picture sourcing, interviewing and mingling at meetings and events – this is one challenging and super demanding sector. So, when the holiday season and the New Year come around, it’s an absolute heaven-send that after all the chaos comes the calm and some well-deserved time to relax (just a little though). I have to confess, until now I’ve never really made or written down New Year’s resolutions – ever. Of course, like many of you out there, I have goals and a hundred to-do lists, both in my head and written on odd scraps of paper, that I often refer to for a quick reminder or guidance. But, for 2018, I did something new – I wrote down some resolutions (mainly something about eat clean, train dirty, less tech, more travel) and I’m hoping that putting pen to paper means that I’ll be able to make them stick – a girl can dream. With that in mind, we’ve put together a #LiveYourBestLife (p21) feature with a round up of the UAE’s top organic, natural and all-round good-for-you brands and products to encourage a more “go green” approach to your every day, without sacrificing on all the indulgent things in life. From getting farm-grown fruit and veg delivered to your door to switching your beauty brands to more naturallycreated products - there’s at least one thing that each of you can commit to doing for a better 2018! And if more travel is what’s on the agenda for your 2018, what better way to begin the New Year than with plenty of inspo for your next trip. Cultural, naturefilled experiences await in Sri Lanka where Resplendent Ceylon bring boutique adventures to life (p47), whilst regional escapes call out from the shores of The Chedi Muscat (p57) – take your pick! The next few months are going to be busy in the FACT office as we plan the 4th annual FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi, ready to recognise all the amazing food and beverage outlets in the city – keep an eye out for the shortlist of nominees in our next issue and don’t forget to vote online for your favourites! I’m not sure how I’m going to survive an entire year without a new season of Game of Thrones, but it’s all the more reason for re-watch weekends and GoT gatherings – who’s in? In the meantime, I’ll just be over here on meme watch from the comfort of the couch. Happy New Year everyone.☺

From One Louvre to Another: Opening a Museum for Everyone Louvre Abu Dhabi’s first special exhibition, From One Louvre to Another: Opening a Museum for Everyone, is now open to the public and will run until April 7. The exhibition traces the history of France’s Musée du Louvre in the 18th century through 150 paintings, sculptures, decorative arts and other works of art from the world-renowned collections of the Musée du Louvre and the Château de Versailles. From One Louvre to Another: Opening a Museum for Everyone tells the story of the creation of the Musée du Louvre two centuries ago, when Europe’s first museums were founded to share access to magnificent royal collections with the public. Divided into three sections, the exhibition explores the royal collections at Versailles under Louis XIV, the Louvre as a palace for artists, and the creation of the Musée du Louvre.

LEONARDO DA VINCI’S SALVATOR MUNDI Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism has acquired Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece Salvator Mundi. The work, hailed as one of the greatest artistic rediscoveries of the last 100 years, will go on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi, alongside another da Vinci masterpiece, La Belle Ferronnière, which is currently on loan

THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has added the traditional UAE performing art of Al-Azi onto the list of ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding’. Al-Azi is a significant and important cultural heritage performance reflecting UAE culture and Emirati society. The art of Al-Azi depends on the repetition of poems without music or rhythmic instruments. It is practiced at national and social events to instill pride, loyalty and national values. It also praises the traditions of welcoming and praising achievement. The performance focuses on the singer and the supporting reciters who give him answers that emphasise his words. Reciters stand in lines behind the lead performer in a symbolic scene of unity and solidarity. HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, said: “AlAzi’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage In Need of Urgent Safeguarding’ list is reflective of our leadership’s directives to support our authentic cultural heritage, and to emphasise on its importance in building national identity and maintaining communication between different generations.” ✤

FITNESS INTERVIEW •

IT’S NO MIRACLE, YOU HAVE TO TRAIN HARD AND EAT CLEAN. IN MY TRAINING THERE’S PLENTY OF VARIETY, I’M TRYING NEARLY EVERYTHING I HEAR ABOUT, SO I CAN DECIDE WHICH FITS ME THE MOST.

H

i Luca! Take us back to the beginning – how and when did your fitness journey start? It’s been a long time since I had my first contact with fitness. I started early in my youth practicing Taekwondo, later taking part in competitions and I was also teaching kids’ classes. The first time I did weight training was when I was 16. I practiced earlier on at home with pull-ups, dips, etc, but my first gym membership was at 16. I had no real clue what I was doing and everything I know I learned more or less by teaching myself through YouTube and my own experience.

me the most. It’s bad when you get into a complete routine. You have to get used to eating a lot when you’re eating on a vegan diet, because the calorie density is not that high.

You’re quite a unique example of someone who has managed to build an enviable physique whilst being vegan – that must be a very disciplined lifestyle, how do you do it? First of all, I wouldn’t say that I’m quite unique with that. There are lots of other really good athletes on a completely plant-based diet, for example the German strongman Patrik Baboumian or the Bodybuilder Mischa Janiec. It’s no miracle, you have to train hard and eat clean. In my training there’s plenty of variety, I’m trying nearly everything I hear about, so I can decide which fits

What are three foods that you can’t live without, things that you would recommend people to include in their diet? I would recommend everyone eating a lot of fruits, especially bananas; on some days I’m eating up to eight. Another food I wouldn’t miss is rice. Even though I know it’s not the healthiest one, I’m in love with basmati rice. However, if anyone would ask me, I would recommend whole meal rice. A big part of my protein intake is based on lentils, so that’s the third food I would mention here.

Veganism has become such a huge food trend and way of life for millions of people – what inspired you to start eating clean? I was always curious about this diet. Me and some friends tried it out together and everyone of us still follows their plantbased diet. For all of us, it had health benefits we wouldn’t miss anymore. This was three and a half years ago now and I won’t change anything in the future.

• FITNESS INTERVIEW

DON’T START ALONE; GET A FRIEND TO START WITH YOU. IT’S WAY EASIER WHEN YOU’RE NOT TRAINING ALONE. What are some of the best and the most difficult things about being a vegan? The only difficult thing is, that you don’t get food that easy when you’re out. But after some time you know what you can eat, so even that is only hard in the beginning. There are some advantages as to why I’m still keeping the vegan diet. First of all, I think that it’s the healthiest way you can live, if you’re doing it right. Mentally and physically, I’m in the best condition I’ve ever been in at the moment, which strengthens my opinion. Of course there are ethical reasons. If you can avoid any harm to other living beings just by such small changes in your diet, then that’s a plus. I don’t want to fund the industry of animal agriculture anymore. For those people who find it hard to get motivated about exercising – can you give three top tips to get them started… Don’t start alone; get a friend to start with you. It’s way easier when you’re not training alone. Second, focus on why you want to start, doesn’t matter if it’s just living healthier or getting a better physique. And finally, get yourself idols - people who inspire you. What keeps you motivated to continue with this healthy lifestyle? I think I’m way beyond the time where I have to motivate myself. It’s more an addiction in my case. Eating clean and my training fulfill me, I even get into a bad mood when I miss some training sessions! What are some of your health and fitness goals for 2018… I have no real answer to this question. I want to become stronger and to maintain my physique. Maybe there’s a 170kg bench press in 2018? ✤

D

ominé applied everyday urban scenes, as the photographic foundation for his Open Doors compositions, transforming the seemingly mundane sights surrounding us, into striking metaphorical reflections. He developed the artworks from multiple sources and juxtaposing images to create beautifully constructed montages. On a trip to Tunis, North Africa, Dominé explained that he became fascinated by the architecture within the historical Medina area, a world heritage site where generations of stories have unfolded down the narrow lanes and alleyways. “The ancient doors scattering the streets are vast and impressive and I became increasingly curious about what was behind these imposing structures,” he said. Today, Dominé photographs inspiringly unique doors throughout the Middle East and North Africa; including Tunisia, Turkey, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. The composition often being led by each unique location explains Dominé. “In some towns, for example Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia, the vast majority of homes have blue doors, so it is often the location that dictates the colour choice of compositions,” he explained. “I am naturally curious, when I am immersed in a photo-shoot I find myself contemplating the lives and customs of the people that surround me. I imagine glancing through open doors into the homes of people to experience a part of their culture. In the MENA region I have learned that people are warm and inviting, hence there is always one open door in my artworks.” His artistic endeavors and graphic style combined with an innate understanding of how to use natural light to create exquisite results sees the fourth series of Open Doors sold in the eclectic retail spaces of Gallery One. Inspired by the retail stores of the world’s greatest galleries and museums, Gallery One launched in the the UAE in 2006 and has since emerged as one of the region’s leading cultural retailers. Driven by the one core philosophical belief, ‘Art in Everything’, Gallery One has grown into a inspired network of retail spaces, which showcase and sell accessible and affordable regional artwork within beautifully packaged products and creative gifts, many of which are inspired by regional pattern, motifs, calligraphy and designs. ✤

Revival

By Eminem

Make way for the real Slim Shady as the most prolific rapper of ALL time has just dropped a fire new album! After months of teasing, we were finally able to get our hands on Eminem’s ninth studio album and it has more than met our expectations. Featuring big names including Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, Pink and Alicia Keys, Em’s star-studded new record has been hyped up for a long while now – no doubt due to his stealth marketing strategies. Opening to mixed reviews, Walk on Water, an emotional power ballad has Eminem fretting about his own obsolescence. Featuring Queen Bey herself, the track pairs a softly crooned hook with fuming, escalating verses, reminiscent of his Love the Way You Lie era. A far cry from his previous controversial content, Marshall Mathers seems to be exploring a newfound wisdom. That being said, Revival has a high bar to climb to compete with the Detroit rapper’s past chart successes. As for us, we’re definitely stanning for life!

No_One Ever Really Dies By N.E.R.D

If there’s anything better than Pharrel Williams solo, it is Pharrel Williams rocking it out with his mates as part of the hip hop collective, N.E.R.D. Luckily for us, the American funk rock band is back with another glorious record! Featuring an impressive roster of guest artists including Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane and Future, this is the trio’s first full-length album in seven years. Bidding adieu to the warm, live-instrument feel of its early work, N.E.R.D. is all set to dive into a much harsher digital realm. Lemon featuring Rihanna trades live instrumentation for a rock hard beat and drum machine kicks. Armed with RiRi’s usual swagger, the track is a surefire banger! 1000 featuring Future keeps with the signature N.E.R.D. production. After continuously transcending genres and bringing new sounds to hip hop, it seems the band can do no wrong.

If you thought healthy eating was flavourless and boring, Bobby Flay has some news for you! The chef shares his secret to eating right without compromising taste. Using an arsenal of low-calorie flavour bombs including rubs, relishes and marinades, Flay transforms lean proteins, whole grains and fresh produce into crave-worthy meals with 200+ recipes.

HELLO, SRI LANKA Bursting through the cloud cover above the teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka we’re greeted with a landscape of verdant green, where tangled jungle hugs up against long stretches of untouched coastline bashed by the incessant momentum of ocean waves. We touch down in Colombo during the worst cyclone to hit the country for many years, yet this tropical downpour marks a refreshing change from the desert climate of the UAE we’ve become accustomed too. As tuk-tuks weave between heavy traffic, Buddhist stupas and waterlogged roads it feels a world away from the ‘bubble’ we’re used to.

THE TEA TRAILS

Our first stop is Sri Lanka’s central highlands affectionately referred to as ‘tea country.’ We board a small amphibian aircraft from Colombo’s domestic terminal which once formed part of the original route between London and Sydney. Traveling skywards away from the capital, we head inland towards the conical shaped topography of Adam’s Peak, before landing on the emerald-coloured waters of Castlereagh Lake. The seaplane journey with Cinnamon Air (approximately $600

Described as ‘the benchmark for boutique’ our first stop is Tea Trails, the world’s first tea bungalow resort which offers five beautifully restored planters bungalows in distinct colonial style. Ascending the gentle hillside away from the lake, we pass eucalyptus trees and dancing butterflies as the early morning mist dissipates over a tranquil infinity swimming pool. Manicured gardens surround the impeccable bungalows complete with sarong-clad private butlers

on hand to take care of your every need. It’s a more personalised service style than we’re used too but one that’s always paired with a friendly smile and the assurance that nothing’s too much trouble. Soaking up the tranquillity of the mountain air and a backto-nature approach, Tea Trails is more than just a boutique resort. Each of the five bungalows can be found scattered around the waters edge, but many kilometres apart, providing the opportunity for cultural immersion with a distinct luxury touch. Each bungalow has been flawlessly restored, with specially curated furniture that provides a throwback to the colonial summerhouses. Tientsin may be the most

grandiose due to spacious outside terraces, while Dunkeld presents a honeymooners delight with an outdoor jacuzzi, but the old-world feel of Norwood had us instantly charmed. Surrounded by tranquil gardens and the maze of tea plantations rising above, our stay at Norwood Bungalow offered an all-inclusive experience with a difference. A four-poster bed and free-standing bath tub take centre stage across the six bedrooms, all of which share communal living and dining areas and a large outdoor pool flanked by bamboo. Taking to the tea trails themselves is an enchanting experience as dirt paths meander through the tea plants seemingly unsure of the final destination. This is all part of the fun as we encounter school children in perfectly pressed uniforms and tea pluckers in bright coloured saris. Lost in the encroaching cloud cover amongst crumbling churchyards and nothing but the calls of nature, it’s a soul awakening experience and one that’s further enhanced by the property’s lack of television. Instead, we seek solace in fireside tales and the crackle of vinyl on an antique gramophone. With two per cent of Sri Lanka’s landmass covered in tea plants, we learn more about the process during an early morning visit to the Dunkeld Tea Factory, owned and operated by Dilmah who pioneered the concept of single origin tea in 1988 before branching out into the world of hospitality with Resplendent Ceylon. fact magazine

Offering the luxury hotel experience with a humanitarian objective, 10 per cent of the company’s profits go into the MJF Foundation, a support centre for underprivileged children in Colombo. Tea is understandably the inspiration behind the tea trails experience with a tea-inspired dinner menu designed by Australian celebrity chef Peter Kuruvita. Think vanilla tea mushroom soup, Moroccan mint tea encrusted lamb and tea-centric cocktails (don’t miss the Dilmah Dream). It doesn’t stop there though, with bath products containing tea sitting beside tea-infused massage oils (massages are undertaken within the comfort of the rooms by mobile therapists). Our stay in Tea Trails also introduces us to the novel concept of ‘bed tea’ with cups of freshly brewed tea brought to the room as part of the morning wake-up call. After two days, we leave the mesmerising lake on a long and picturesque journey to our next stop…

WILD COAST TENTED LODGE Dark granite boulders permeate through the vibrant green tea plantations as we follow the mountainous paths carved out by cascading waterfalls. We skirt along escarpments to our next destination, the Wild Coast Tented Lodge on Sri Lanka’s South Eastern Coast, a five-hour journey by road traversing mountains and floodwaters as we journey to the coast like some long forgotten tributary. Our journey is broken by a brief stop at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home supported by the MJF and Born Free Foundation and an opportunity to watch the feeding of orphaned elephants. The Wild Coast Tented Lodge situated on the fringes of Yala National Park feels remote. An arid landscape with the odd flourish of green vegetation. Wiry trees with twisted bows provide shelter for roaming jackals, while crocodiles peer ferociously beneath floodwaters. Beaten by waves and lashed by the wind, the coastline is as rugged and wild as the name would suggest. On an isolated stretch of sand and accessed via a 2km track of red earth lies Resplendent Ceylon’s latest venture into the hospitality sector, the Wild Coast Tented Lodge, a haven in the wilderness. The immediate appeal of the domed architecture fashioned from bamboo components and mirroring the rocky outcrops of the landscape, is swiftly revoked by warning signs alerting us to the dangers of roaming leopards and the instruction not to venture outside after nightfall (unless accompanied by a member of hotel staff). The landscape, architecture and interiors has been designed and built by the team at Nomadic Resorts, and it surely is a feat of the ambitious. After seeing the rooms, or more accurately, the cocoons - it’s unlikely that you’d want to leave this gorgeous space in the day, let alone at night; they’re the epitome of luxury. The resort is made up of 28 cocoon-shaped rooms clustered in small groups around watering holes to resemble the pattern of a leopard paw if viewed from above. fact magazine

51

Nomadic Resorts have used natural materials which integrate seamlessly into the environment with bamboo and shingle imported from Thailand and the outer membrane of the cocoons brought in from France. If feels as though no expense has been spared in bringing a unique sense of luxury into the wild. The rooms represent safari chic and feature wooden chests, thick carpets, copper pipe work, heavy drapes, and a regal, copper bath tub that gives us all the instagram-worthy goals. Each cocoon is slightly raised off the ground like a mini treehouse and large windows are positioned to take advantage of the landscape and passing wildlife. The bark of a samba deer in the middle of the night signals leopards may be close by and the sound of creatures scuttling beneath our tented paradise brings some unease to this dubious city-dweller – but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I’m ALL in! Breakfast brings stories of elephants roaming into the restaurant late at night and with the current making it too dangerous to enter the sea, a brisk swim in the salt-water pool enlivens our senses for the trip into Yala. Yala National Park is home to the world’s highest concentration of leopards per square meter and the worn track beats our bodies into numb awareness but it’s all worth it for the briefest glimpse of a leopard perched high on a protruding rock amongst crumbling stupas, like a forgotten king surveying his lands. I take my picture, and we’re on our way.

SUSTAINABLE LUXURY TRAVEL Only a four hour flight from the Gulf, Sri Lanka marks a land of encroaching nature located South East of mainland India. Resplendent Ceylon also offers the tropical beach experience at Cape Weligama and a forthcoming resort in the cultural heartland of Sigiriya. The company is paving the way for sustainable luxury tourism in Sri Lanka, which may currently be a niche market, with the majority of tourists looking to beach flop in all-inclusive resorts on the east coast. But, for the luxury market, the adventure seekers and the culture vultures as well as those looking to explore Sri Lanka’s history and cultural traditions, Resplendent Ceylon provides an entirely new and breathtaking experience, one with a conscientious strategy and a humanitarian heart. ✤ 52

We didn’t expect The Chedi to be situated in such close proximity to the city centre but upon passing through the white-washed perimeter walls, it feels as though we’re miles from civilisation. The hotel lobby greets us with Omani charm as the scent of oud drifts out into the starscattered sky, while a collection of rainbowcoloured glass lanterns are suspended overhead painting a picture straight out of the stories of 1001 Arabian Nights. The Chedi’s architecture is Moorish in style emanating a sense of zen-like serenity and it’s this hybrid of Arabian and Asian that provides much of the property’s appeal. We’re gifted a handy map to help us navigate the expansive grounds and as our hands brush against door handles inlaid with mother of pearl, we know we’re in for a real treat...

(replenished daily) complete with glass decanters of liquor for an additional touch of class. Each Club Suite sports a small outside terrace with reclining sun-loungers from which you can glimpse the sea through natural sand dunes and meadows of pampas grass. Booking the Club Suite also provides access to the Chedi Club where afternoon tea and pre-dinner cocktails and canapés are provided.

RELAXATION GOALS

SUITE LIVING

With 158 guest rooms and suites available we had the privilege of staying in one of the 38 Chedi Club Suites. These standalone units sleep a maximum of four guests and offer the feeling of a private villa, generously-sized and tastefully-decorated in traditional Omani furnishings. Taking a minimalistic approach, the living area features majlis seating that easily converts into divan-style beds. The bedroom juxtaposes dark mahogany against the ample natural light streaming through the shuttered windows, while a king-size bed provides the utmost comfort, superseded by a silver dome housing a large Arabic lantern. It’s not all traditional though as modern

touches heighten the experience and can be found in the technological aspects - a Nespresso machine and two 42-inch flat screen televisions. The bathrooms are literally the stuff of dreams (#TubEnvy), with double vanities, separate rainfall shower and a sunken tub big enough to fit an entire family! Acqua Di Parma toiletries add to the pampering nature of the property and are almost as comforting as the slippers and robes which forgo the usual ‘fluffy’ texture in favour of a more kimono-like approach. The benefits of the Club Suite also entitle guests to complimentary limousine transfers, laundry service and a mini bar

Many guests select The Chedi as a hideaway from the world, if only for a day or two. With discreet levels of service and a respect for privacy, guests are valued in a way shown by few properties in the region. Set amidst tranquil water gardens inspired by the oasis falaj system, perfectly shaped hedgerows and curved archways, The Chedi is flanked by a 370-metre stretch of private beach and it’s refreshing to see a natural coastline in the Gulf unencumbered by the construction that blights other GCC cities. With three swimming pools on site, the Long Pool is a symbol of The Chedi used in magazines and on postcards for the best part of a decade. At 103 meters in length, the body of water is recognised as the longest swimming pool in the Middle East. Lined by slender palm trees mapping out the trajectory of the water, a polished black-tile finish adds an uber-cool vibe to the monochromatic stylings of cabanas and lounge furniture. Two of the temperaturecontrolled swimming pools are reserved for the use of adults only (the Long and Chedi pools) but the Serai pool, situated close to the beach is conveniently shaded for families with young children. fact magazine

WEEKEND ESCAPES •

The health club and spa (the largest in Muscat) present a state-of-the-art gymnasium and a selection of treatment rooms (two of which are conveniently set up for couples). Continuing the Zen approach, the treatment rooms are home to jacuzzi baths and steam rooms, meaning all your wellness needs are taken care of in one place.

UNRIVALLED DINING

Those in search of fine dining have six restaurants, two lounges and a myriad of cuisines to choose from. Breakfast is served in The Restaurant and offers both buffet and a la carte dining beneath Omani arches and crystal chandeliers. The Restaurant is also home to The Chedi’s popular Friday Champagne Brunch, a more sophisticated and restrained affair than the ritualistic party-orientated brunches of the region. For something a little special guests can opt to dine al fresco on freshly grilled seafood at the Beach Restaurant, which is one of THE places to dine in Muscat while taking in sunset views over the Indian Ocean. The Long Pool serves up distinctive Asian fare and represents our personal favourite of The Chedi’s dining options with the pool area taking on an ethereal quality after dark.

A SERENE STAY

The Chedi is the ideal place to escape for a few days and situated just over an hour’s flight from Abu Dhabi, it’s perfect for a long weekend. The beauty of a resort like this is in its proximity to Muscat’s main sights and attractions - Mutrah Souq, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and the opportunity for dolphin watching - while promoting a feeling of complete isolation. At almost 15-years-old The Chedi, is beginning to show minor signs of wear and tear BUT with such exclusivity and Arabian hospitality on display, you’ll barely notice. Go for the peace and the perfection of hospitality. ✤

CITY RIDES •

In a country where SUVs reign the roads, it’s rather exciting to come across a sedan that can give its mighty motoring competitors a run for their money. Enter the BMW 5 Series Sedan – a seventh generation line-up of models that keep things sporty and stylish all in one.

W

hen we first pick up the BMW 5 Series Sedan 540i, there’s one thing that immediately strikes us; this vehicle was MADE for the UAE. It cuts a sleek yet elegant figure – the kind of car you want to pull up in at any 5-star hotel around the country and later watch the valet bring it around at the end of the evening. The design of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan exudes athletic prowess and stylistic assurance. The new model therefore remains the quintessential sporting business sedan – with some new high standards that BMW fans will really like. The exterior dimensions of the 5 Series are only slightly larger than those of its predecessor. But, you can really feel this difference when you’re out on the open road and more so when you’re parking or trying to get through narrow spaces – the car is wider, taller and has an elongated silhouette that any sedan lover will appreciate. BMW offers the Sport Line and Luxury Line equipment packages for the 5 Series, allowing it to be tailored as closely as possible to the customer’s personal wishes. Sport Line shines the spotlight on the car’s dynamic character and stands out with numerous trim elements in high-gloss black and line-specific 18-inch light-alloy wheels (optional 19-inch) in a bi-colour polished finish. Opening the doors reveals illuminated aluminium door sill strips with a BMW logo and Sport Line badge. Luxury Line emphasises the car’s elegant character with features such as chrome kidney grille bars, Air Breathers and window surrounds. Line-specific lightalloy wheels (standard: 18-inch, optional: 19-inch) underscore its exclusive looks. The aluminium door sill strips with BMW logo bear Luxury Line lettering. With its exterior look on point – we get into the

driver’s seat, eager to explore the inside and take the 5 Series for a spin. Now, don’t be fooled. As much as the car is attractive on the outside, it also lives up to our expectations of BMW with sophisticated interiors. Sport Line adds BMW sports seats with cloth/leather covers in the front, a BMW sports leather steering wheel and specific trim strips. Luxury Line brings leather covers with contrast stitching and special decorative inlays that shine an even brighter light on the high-class character of the interior. The instrument panel is covered in Sensatec. Our test drive vehicle boasts interiors that are decked out in a subtle desert beige – and you’ll sink right into your seat as if it’s a memory foam mattress. There’s a fine balance between sporty driver focus on the one hand and stylish elegance on the other. Top-class materials, supreme build quality and attention to detail all provide a great feeling of spaciousness with new technologies in abundance, offering both driver and passengers comfort and driving pleasure. For those long tiring days spent in and out of meetings, you can maximise on-board comfort in the 5 Series with not one, not two, but eight massage functions, not to mention innovative seat operation using touch sensors and four-zone climate control complete with ionisation and discreet air fragrance. But how does it drive, we hear you ask? The answer is, beautifully. For those, much like us, who may have business all over the Emirates, when driving up the E11 to Dubai or hitting it south into quieter territories, a wealth of assistance systems are on hand in the new BMW 5 Series to offer the driver unbeatable support – not only at critical moments but also in less demanding situations at the wheel, such as traffic jams, slow-moving traffic and monotonous stretches of motorway. fact magazine

• CITY RIDES

There’s a stereo camera, which teams up with optional radar and ultrasound sensors to monitor the area around the car. Alongside the evasion aid and crossing traffic warning, the two new features in the BMW 5 Series which helped us greatly on the drive to and from the capital are the Lane Change Assistant and Lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection. The latter keeps an eye on the lane markings and the area around the car, and actively helps the driver to avoid looming collisions by applying corrective steering inputs – this is a HUGE help especially at times when drivers are in a rush and sudden overtaking occurs or when visibility is low like recently with the foggy weather. The display and control concept in the BMW 5 Series Sedan has been revolutionised to bring intuitive usability and extensive comfort to the forefront of 64

fact magazine

the driving experience. With even greater userfriendliness as its goal, the car is equipped with the latest-generation iDrive system. In top specification, it displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features, plus vehicle functions, on a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen. The system can be operated using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures, or by touching the display controls directly, as the driver wishes (voice command is a little touch and go – but all other controls work perfectly). The large, tile-style panels can be arranged as desired and show the content of the underlying menus in constantly updated form. The latest-generation full-colour BMW Head-Up Display has a projection surface that is 70 per cent larger than before and displays traffic signs, telephone listings, radio stations, music tracks, navigation instructions and warnings from the assistance systems. And what about performance? Whether you’re in Sport or Comfort mode, be rest assured that the 5 Series Sedan ticks all the thrills of driving a BMW. All the engines in the 5 Series Sedan line-up belong to the newly-developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology imbues all the members of the family with outstanding performance combined with exceptional efficiency. The 540i and 540i xDrive are the two petrol variants, working in tandem with rear-wheel drive and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, respectively. The BMW 540i benefits from a six-cylinder, 250 kW/340 hp unit under its bonnet. This three-litre, straight-six produces torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). Despite its extra output and sharper dynamic edge, average fuel consumption stands at only 6.5 l/100 km (43.5 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are kept to just 149 g/km. Meaning, the car is not only fast, efficient and powerful, it’s also designed with the environment and your wallet in mind! BMW is recognised for its long-distance comfort and wonderfully dynamic driving experience – this is no exception when we talk about the 5 Series Sedan. This model line-up has certainly set the bar high for cars within its class. In just a few days, we were emotionally attached to the car and all its technological features. Taking us from A to B, events, meetings, casual gatherings and important social happenings, the BMW 5 Series not only remains the epitome of the business sedan, it also opens up the door into new territory for those motoring enthusiasts looking for a balance of style and performance on the roads. ✤

UNDERSTATED AND ELEGANT, THIS SEASON’S COLLECTION FROM COS PRESENTS NEW PROPORTIONS AND SOFT TAILORING INSPIRED BY ARCHITECTURAL LINES AND THE EXPERIMENTATION OF GEOMETRIC DRAPES AND RICH TEXTURES – OFFERING A NEW TAKE ON CLASSIC PIECES.

HER The influence of tailoring is evident in the collection, garments are reimagined with a modern twist; a wool blend suit in burgundy features menswear-inspired voluminous slacks that drape at the feet, a tailored wool blend top with zip detail is paired with a silk ivory shirt and a long deconstructed sleeveless waistcoat feels effortless in a relaxed, unstructured material. Taking its inspiration from the lines of architecture and industrial references, the collection experiments with the proportion of silhouettes and details – featuring exaggerated lapels, cuffs and vents, sharp pleats inspired by press folds and the use of geometric shapes. Bold forms are complemented by innovative and technical materials inspired by experimental art and design. Fabrics are clean and compact, whilst draped and cut in interesting ways. Accessories are inventive and forward-thinking: deep red square toed lace-up shoes with a geometric heel take centre stage alongside a structured leather shoulder bag and belt with exaggerated buckle – in the same distinctive red hue. ✤

HIM The focus on reinventing classics continues in menswear, taking a fresh and casual approach. A wool blend grey melange coat is given an effortless twist with rounded shoulders whilst a relaxed cotton poplin shirt in oatmeal is tucked into flat-front wide-legged wool trousers, revealing an updated and modern silhouette that accentuates the waist and shoulders. The urban theme is exemplified in an oversized cotton utility shirt jacket in midnight green, paired alongside wide cropped trousers with a dropped crotch in the same deep shade. A long quilted technical parka highlights the focus on new materials and the significance of bold shapes in the collection. The nod to architecture is referenced in the collection’s industrial palette of slate blue, charcoal grey, midnight green and cream. The tones are offset by a strong presence of red, inspired by the Italian architecture studio Pedevilla’s use of red-pigmented concrete at a Tyrolean fire station. Outfits are styled together with tonal colour blocking and dark shades that create undefined border lines. ✤

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

W

e’ve been spoilt for choice this year when it comes to restaurant openings in the capital and there have certainly been some great new venues and big names to join the city’s flourishing food scene. One of the most exciting openings in Abu Dhabi has to be La Petite Maison. Everyone has either heard of it or has dined at its famed Dubai location in DIFC and it’s really not hard to see what all the hype is about. The Abu Dhabi venue, like its counterpart is achingly chic with white walls, quirky art and the signature fresh lemon and tomato on each table with a large bottle of olive oil to accompany. The space also boasts a large terrace over-looking the water and Al Maryah Island. Be sure to start your dining experience with a signature drink or two at the bar - the bartenders really know their stuff. What makes this restaurant so successful is its strong brand identity – LPM knows what it’s about and it does it well. The service is flawless and professional and the food is beautifully simple yet full of flavour, leaving diners in awe of their experience – just what a good restaurant should do. We start with the Burrata which is fresh and creamy, and served neatly with tomato and basil. We also try the Escargot – a dish made up of cooked land snails tucked away in their shells, alongside the most decadent butter and garlic flavouring. French food does not get much better than this and again it’s so simple but oh-so-tasty. There are many enticing main options to choose including Gnocchi, Dover Sole and Lamb Chops, but on this occasion we opt for the Grilled Prawns and the Duck. The latter is a standout dish and comes served as slow-cooked duck legs with a delicious orange glaze. With unmatched LPM expertise, the chefs cook the duck just perfectly and the result is tender meat falling off your fork with nice crispy skin on the outside. The 84

prawns are also very good, cooked in a finger-licking (though we did our best to not get caught doing this!) rich butter and garlic sauce Dessert at LMP must not be skipped and our tip is to order the French Toast – after all, it’s not just a breakfast dish! Oh my goodness – sent straight down from the food Gods, this just might be one of the best things we’ve eaten in Abu Dhabi (or life) – super fluffy with a crisp exterior and served with a Spice Ice Cream. We only wish there was more on the plate – you won’t want to share this one! LPM is a total foodie experience. It’s a complete sensory journey of tastes and culinary discoveries, presented in the most sophisticated and simple presentations. A fabulous place for a celebration or romantic dinner, we couldn’t recommend LPM enough. ✤

Al Fresco Goals

With the arrival of cooler climates comes one more thing that we love – outdoor dining! Abu Dhabi’s winter months represent a transitional period for the city, as terraces and seasonal eateries re-open for business and residents and tourists relish the opportunity to sit outside in comfort once again. W

inner of the Best Al Fresco Dining award at the 2017 Fact Dining Awards Abu Dhabi, BBQ Al Qasr at the Emirates Palace boasts one of the most romantic locations to dine in the capital. Curtains flutter dramatically against the cool sea breeze, while wooden walkways traverse the golden sands leading to raised gazebos for dining. It’s an idyllic beachside setting of the kind you’ll only find in the UAE and one which brings a touch of luxury to the outdoors, accompanied by the outstanding levels of service for which the Palace is renowned. The natural surroundings of sand, sea and slender palm trees complement BBQ Al Qasr’s concept well. The pride of this particular venue is understandably the prime cuts of meat, yet the concise menu also offers a good selection of crisp salads and grilled seafood. We begin with the Honeymoon Salad, a visual treat of a dish that takes on the appearance of a potted plant. Spiralled cucumber and carrots are meticulously arranged amongst mushrooms and a ‘soil’ of guacamole, adding to the illusion of a bouquet of flowers in bloom. With vegetable chips for dipping and a quaint watering can used to apply the ginger, honey and mustard dressing, this dish’s interactivity and innovation are only matched by the exquisite taste. We deliberate between the Octopus In Variation or Hand Dived Scallops for our appetisers and eventually settle on the latter. It’s a worthy choice and one that reflects our dining location, where the sound of ocean waves lapping against the shore takes precedence. Delicate scallops are plated with cecine de Leon (smoke-cured beef), confit ceps (mushrooms) and a pistachio puree, providing a contrast in textures that works to enhance the harmonious flavours. With seafood dominating our appetisers, beef becomes the focus of our main courses (steaks are BBQ Al Qasr’s signature after all). Showcasing the finest cuts from around the world, all of which are “simply cooked on charcoal”, the high quality of meat offered is a real testament to the culinary team at the Palace. Opting for the 250g Mr. Fillet of Margaret River Australian Wagyu and the 160g Mrs. Fillet of Australian Organic Angus Beef, both come plated with a small salad and the additional touch of a vegetable crisp, burnt into which you’ll find the cooking temperature of the meat. Accompanied by garlic spinach, gluttonous truffle potatoes and a

Our knife slides easily through the meat, taking on a slight char from the charcoal cooking method. Two courses in, we’re beaten and a little too full for dessert. Making a mental note to return specifically for the BBQ short ribs and dark chocolate fondant with kumquat, we know it’s only a matter of time before we’ll be back on the golden-sand shores of this beautiful outdoor venue. Next time perhaps at night when BBQ Al Qar is illuminated by flickering tiki lights to add an extra level of romanticism. In a property where 24 karat gold cappuccinos, ice creams adorned with sheets of gold leaf, and camel burgers are the norm, the Emirates Palace once again steps things up with a grandiose offering. Described as a casual dining venue, we would note that BBQ Al Qasr is anything but! Granted it may be less opulent than some of the 12 other restaurants and bars, therefore casual by the Emirates Palace standards, but BBQ Al Qasr manages to evoke a magical quality with a touch of luxury found at very few places in Abu Dhabi. ✤

#PAULE #KA #LAUNCHES #NEW #SS18 #COLLECTION #IN #DUBAI Paule Ka’s SS18 collection preview was an affair to remember! Guests were invited to The Maine in JBR to discover 2 collections from the Parisian brand; the SS18 pre spring collection, which is the last collection made my former creative director Alithia Spurri Zampetti and the Black Carpet collection designed by the PAULE KA studio, which embodies the Spirit of the founder Serge Cajfinger, who will make his return this fall. The SS18 pre-collection is inspired by sunset on the City of Lights and colors that slide from the vivid tones of the day to the subtle shades of night. Alithia Spuri-Zampetti envisioned a Parisian woman influenced by many cultural sources, and seeking new horizons. Therein resides the magic of the Paule Ka 2018 Pre-Collection: a delicious slide into the city and the impressions and souvenirs of Oriental voyages.

L

ate nights, not enough exercise and too much festive fun can leave you feeling, tired, drained and well, a little heavier. January is the perfect time to start the New Year off on the right foot so why not treat yourself to a fabulous detox session at Atarmia Spa? There are so many reasons that we love Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi but one of the main ones is their spa, Atarmia. The gorgeous space, set over two floors, features nine large treatment rooms, including one VIP couple’s treatment room as well as indoor and outdoor relaxation zones with the privacy of separate areas for ladies and gents. The wellness centre offers an outdoor 25-metre lap pool, an array of hydrotherapy facilities, a manicure and pedicure salon, a fitness room with the latest equipment, a sauna, steam room and whirlpool. When booking a treatment at Atarmia Spa, they give you the option of spending the whole day at the spa to use the facilities which is such a bonus and not done by a lot of other hotels. Whether you want to use the gym, relax in the hydro pool or spend the afternoon at the beautiful private swimming pool, your day will be well spent in relaxed surroundings. I arrive at the spa and I’m welcomed with a refreshing pomegranate shot while I wait for my therapist. The Customised Full Body Treatment I’m having today focuses on detoxing. They also offer this same treatment with Anti-Ageing or Uplifting benefits too. I’m shown to the treatment room which is very spacious and follows the same chic minimalist theme of the overall hotel. After changing into a lovely robe and slippers, the therapist scrubs and cleanses my feet. The treatment uses products from HydroPeptide and is aimed at helping you with immediate solutions to rid your body of toxins, heavy metals and any other nasty substances you don’t want. It’s also excellent for water retention and cellulite. I lay on the soft massage table which is heated to draw out all the toxins later on. A grainy scrub is rubbed all over the body and included peppermint to really get the blood flowing and to boost circulation. Once this is applied, I take a quick shower to reveal soft, silky-smooth skin. The bed is now covered in plastic and a body treatment is applied once again using peppermint – it really tingles and exudes a cool, menthol scent. I’m then wrapped in the plastic sheet and folded into a heated wrap which allows the products to get to work and really makes me sweat everything out. After another shower using a HydroPeptide Invigorating Body Wash that uses caffeine to stimulate your skin even further, I lay back on the massage table for a soothing massage with an uplifting lotion that penetrates deep into the skins layer to continue the detox process. I leave feeling fresh and light and my skin is glowing. This is perfect for a good detox fix and to really get your circulation going. But, it’s also great for dry skin that really needs some hydration and will help to undo all the indulgent behaviour of the Festive season! ✤
