fact magazine

It all began on a quiet street corner in New York’s West Village where the first Magnolia Bakery opened in 1996. Much to our delight, this charming sweet treat haven has a prime position in The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, bringing Classic American baked goods to all those with a sweet tooth in Abu Dhabi. As lovers of all things cake-like, cookie-crumbling, and pie-perfect, we took a trip to Magnolia Bakery to find out what makes the visitors tick. There’s a warm, vintage feel embedded in the classic decor with a family-home style, kitsch and quirky charm. Coloured chairs are dotted around the trendy tables, simple white drapes hug the windows, and blackboards display specials and other menu info. Big glass counters allow an instant peek at cakes and cookies, and all kinds of colourful and fabulous desserts. There was only one thing on our minds; Red Velvet. It’s one of the bakery’s speciality cupcakes available with whipped vanilla icing or (our favourite) cream cheese icing! The texture of the cake was beautifully moist and fluffy, and the taste, just exquisite (we dare you to try it!).

There was a wonderful balance of flavour with the cocoa and vanilla, and what we were told is a little ‘southern mystery’. Personally, the icing on the cake (no pun intended!) was the winner for us; smooth, creamy and unusually light. We also opted for the Blueberry Lemon Cheescake which happened to be the cupcake of the day. Covered in lemon cream cheese icing, it was, to simply put it, sugary heaven on a plate. Yum! It was clear that Magnolia Bakery’s desserts are prepared using the freshest and finest ingredients. As well as cupcakes, the eatery has pies, cheesecakes, pudding, icebox desserts (try the peanut butter icebox pie – it’s divine!), cookies, brownies and bars, and a huge variety of classic and speciality cakes, including muffins. For anyone who wants to experience a little taste of pure sweet seduction in a homely and welcoming atmosphere, Magnolia Bakery should be right up your foodie street!

SUMMER SURVIVAL GO: Shadowland by Pilobolus runs from August 8 to 16 at ADNEC. Call 056 133 3268 for tickets and more information.

Spectacular Shadowland

It’s been described as groundbreaking and magically magnificent by reviewers as well as the general public, so we’re crazy excited for Shadowland this month. The show is put together by internationally acclaimed dance troupe Pilobolus who put on a part shadow, part dance, part circus, and part concert – now if that’s not an act to impress, then we don’t know what is! Using multiple moving screens of different shapes and sizes the evening-length performance merges projected images with front-screen choreography. The performance tells a surreal story of a young girl’s sensational world as she comes of age, a story that is both beautifully dramatic and quirkily comedic too. Mums, dads, kids, and even grandparents – there’s no denying that every member of the family will enjoy the thrilling visuals of Shadowland by Pilobolus! We sure are lucky to have this spectacular tour visiting Abu Dhabi.

Captivating La Verita

It’s created by the producers of the world-famous Cirque Du Soleil, so simply knowing that, we already know Abu Dhabi is in for a real treat with La Verita. For the first time since its creation in New York in 1944, an original Salvador Dali painted backdrop will be featured on stage, in a theatrical homage to the life and work of the famous artist. A cast of awe-inspiring acrobats play instruments, sing, juggle, contort, clown, and even can-can against this stunning hand-painted backdrop during the aesthetically beautiful production. The show is packed with jostling themes and explosive ideas, bursting with colour and character. This is set to be a one-of-a-kind performance that you really don’t want to miss! GO: La Verita by the Producers of Cirque Du Soleil Corteo runs from August 21 to 31 at ADNEC. Call 056 133 3268 for tickets and more information.

David Blaine: Real or Illusion

Hands-down the world’s most famous illusionist and endurance artist – David Blaine – is coming to put on, what can only be described as, an electrifying edgeof-the-seat show. He has done everything from being buried alive, to sitting in a giant cube of ice for nearly three days, and even being submerged in a water-filled sphere for seven days and seven nights (and those are not even close to the most chilling stunts he’s done!). It’s these high-profile feats of endurance that have catapulted him to death-defying fame. Go and check out his Middle East debut, which promises a full-length show featuring life-threatening feats… we’ll be there! SUMMER SURVIVAL

HOW TO:

TOP TIPS TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE ABU DHABI HEAT

©

11am – 3pm

BE ALERT AT PEAK HEAT HOURS…

Temperatures reach their highest between the hours of 11am to 3pm so here are a few simple things you should be doing to tackle the heat and humidity.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

MAKE A/C YOUR BFF

Love it or hate it, there’s no easier way to cool off than cranking up the aircon. The temperaturecooling device will become your loving companion, at home and in the office. If you’re out and about, head to public buildings like the malls, cinemas, art galleries and museums to keep cool.

KEEP CALM & HYDRATE

There’s nothing better than a cold glass of water to give you a boost on a hot day, and summer is the best time to keep a bottle (or five) of good old H20 close by. Drinking plenty of water will help to avoid dehydration, as well as compensating for the yucky sweating throughout the day.

DRESS LIGHT & AIRY

Jump on the summer fashion bandwagon with loose-fitted clothing like linen shirts and trousers, or cotton based kaftans and other apparel to steer clear of that sticky humidity in the summer air. Go for light colours to reflect the sun and maximise your efforts to stay cool. Plus, the sales are on, yay!

SAY YES TO SPF

As many of you will want to enjoy the occasional outdoor event or activity, not to mention that we all have to head outdoors for work, shopping and social gatherings anyway, so remember to pile on the sunblock. For further measure, always try and stick to shaded areas outside to avert direct exposure to the sun.

SUMMER BAG ESSENTIALS WHAT TO CARRY Cool Down

Get yourself an eco-friendly, insulated water bottle that keeps your water cool for when you’re desperately thirsty in the sweltering sun.

Smell Sensational Just because it’s hot outside doesn’t mean you can’t smell divine. Keep fresh with a travelsized deodorant or rollerball.

Hide Your Eyes

Look stylish with a pair of sunnies whilst keeping your eyes shielded from the powerful rays of the strong summer sun. 32. fact magazine

KEEP YOUR DIET IN CHECK

There’s nothing worse than feeling bloated or sluggish on a really hot summer day, and this can be easily controlled by your food choices. Diet is key to keeping cool so don’t go eating large portions of proteinrich meals every day as this can increase metabolic heat and warm the body.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

Pucker Up

Protect your lips just as you’d protect your skin. Get a lip balm with SPF in it and especially one that helps lock in moisture.

Hat-Trick

It’s not really a trick – simply, cover your head when out in the summer sun. You can buy a trendy hat that will protect your face from the UV rays.

Slap on Sunscreen

Apply a good amount of sunblock with high SPF before you leave the house. And don’t forget to reapply throughout the day for extra protection.

The summer heat can lead to unwarranted accidents; here are the numbers to know in case of an emergency…

991 996 997 Electricity & Water

COAST GUARD

CIVIL DEFENSE

999 998 Police

Ambulance

Tip: In the event of a heat emergency call your required service and if people are involved, try to cool the victim until help arrives.

ucked away in The Collection on Saadiyat Island stands a beautiful artistic space. Large, airy and dotted with pretty, colourful works of art on its walls, and interesting sculptures on display, this is the location of the group exhibition Expanding Horizons. It’s here, at Salwa Zeidan Gallery that around 20 artists are showcasing their most high-quality pieces. This summer expo is bringing freshness and colours to the art scene, and helping to highlight the potential of undiscovered artists and their talents. What’s unusual but also creative and unique is that Expanding Horizons is an exhibition with no thematic background. Instead it is based on the high quality, fresh profile and affordable prices, of the work. Executive Manager, Vanja Rontini, explains, “Since we opened in November, all our shows were very theme-based in the sense that they revolved around one artist or one type of art. “We thought of doing something different as summer was approaching, and something that we’ve never done before, which is to connect artworks not by their thematic background but by the fact that they’re all high quality and they’re all very interesting,” she adds. 42. fact magazine

02.

“We also try and encourage a new generation of art collectors in Abu Dhabi, and to show that art is not for only the super rich. It’s for everyone; everyone who appreciates art.”

And interesting they are indeed. The exhibition, which was carefully curated by the gallery’s director Salwa Zeidan, along with Vanja, features everything from sculptures, to drawings, collage, installations, and paintings. There is also the connection of summer and summer colours, between all the pieces on display. What’s great to hear is that Expanding Horizons is a way of putting affordable art on display and encouraging a new generation of collectors to experience the concept of investing, in promising artists from the region. “We tried to focus our attention on primarily new artists or emerging artists, to give them a bit of exposure,” says Vanja. “But also to try and encourage a new generation of art collectors in Abu Dhabi, and to show that art is not for only the super rich. It’s for everyone; everyone who appreciates art.” fact magazine .43

“Here, artists tend to be more afraid. They believe they are not ready enough or they haven’t grown enough. I think this barrier needs to be broken…”

07.

Alongside the expo, a series of talks on art collecting, by renowned experts from world-famous art houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s, will also take place. Talking about the current art scene in Abu Dhabi, Vanja says, “Abu Dhabi is still developing; I think it has chosen the path of development that is more sustainable. “There will be a very vibrant cultural district with The Guggenheim, The Louvre, and Sheikh Zayed Museum. I hope that with the arrival of that many things will change,” she adds. Vanja believes that it is the idea of art in Abu Dhabi that many don’t know enough 44. fact magazine

about, especially as neighbouring Dubai has a booming, and dominating, art scene. She says, “I don’t think people are used to the fact that there’s art in Abu Dhabi too. They think ‘I want to buy something, I’ll go to Dubai.’ “And here, artists tend to be more afraid. They believe they are not ready enough or they haven’t grown enough. I think this barrier needs to be broken, and that’s what Salwa is trying to do,” says Vanja. Looking ahead to the future of art in the

city, Vanja hopes that there will eventually be a sophisticated cultural district for locals, expats and visitors to enjoy. If innovative exhibitions like Expanding Horizons continue to pop up around the city, we have no doubt that Abu Dhabi’s art landscape will continue to grow into a thriving community. GO: Expanding Horizons will be on display until early September. Call +971 2666 9656 or email info@salwazeidangallery.com for more information.

he work of some of the finest Emirati, Arab and international photographers is currently on show for general public viewing in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District at Manarat Al Saadiyat. So, why is this particular expo worth a visit? To start off, around 36,000 entry submissions, from 8,410 photographers, representing 58 countries, were made to this year’s EPC, organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA). This year’s main theme was Decisive Moment, inspired by Turkish born artist Yusof Karsh and his work on the importance of research, study and reflection. Innovative and creative ideas were portrayed through thousands of images, but a handful of lucky and talented photographers prevailed. The grand prize winner in the main theme was Italian photographer Cristina Garzone, for her poignant shot which captured a Pilgrimage to Lalibela, earning her an FIAP gold medal and AED80,000 cash prize. This is also one of the stunning images on display at the exhibition! You can also marvel a number of winning photographs from the other seven themes that photographers were invited to submit work for. These include Nature, Creative, Travel, Colours, Future Image by Future Eyes, Monochrome, and Colour Photo Print. On top of this, to complement the main theme, revered artist Tarek Al-Ghoussein, who is also Artistic Director of EPC’s eighth edition, has curated works by four invited artists; Lamya Gargash, Reem Falaknaz, Shahidul Alam and Yasser Alwan, whose work will be on display in a parallel exhibition that will discuss and investigate a ‘Decisive Moment’ in their daily lives. According to the TCA, the EPC’s goal is to develop photography in the UAE by attracting regional and world photographers to reflect a diversified image of Abu Dhabi and the Emirates, as well as represent the world’s rich and diverse cultures.

Badar Al Nomani, Emirates Photography Competition Supervisor, at TCA, says: “The foundations of the Emirates Photography Competition are deeply rooted in education which aims to develop UAE photography and attract talented artists to reflect upon and foster the concept of understanding cultures.” The contest was held under the auspices of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) and with the recognition of the Photographic Society of America. The EPC is also licensed by the United Photographers International. This is a unique opportunity to view a stunning collection of photography that illustrates raw talent and encourages diverse cultural discourse. Don’t miss out!

REVIEWS

On the Record Pop/Rock Yes

By JASON MRAZ

Back with a resounding Yes! (that’s the statement-making title of the singersongwriter’s fifth studio album), Jason Mraz has a brand new 14-track record to share with the world. And he’s so excited that he kick-started ‘Mraz Mondays’, releasing one single a week leading up to the album release date. We particularly love the intimate sound of Love Someone and the fact there’s a few purely-acoustic choices that will leave you with a musical chill.

POP/CONTEMPORARY

Lines & Circles By O-Town

It’s been a decade since O-Town has released new music, but the would-be five-piece (now there’s just four of them as heartthrob Ashley Parker Angel has decided not to join for the reunion) is back for another shot at the mainstream music chart. If we’re completely honest (and we were actually big fans in their Liquid Dreams and All Or Nothing days) we’re really missing the five-part guy harmony so central to the boy band formula. The now foursome made up of Dan Miller, Erik-Michael Estrada, Trevor Penick and Jacob Underwood made their comeback with the smooth-sounding, high-note-hitting Skydive, and if this single is anything to go by then expect a more mature album displaying the band’s emoting skills! However, as they once said, ‘I want it all, or nothing at all’ – we just can’t accept their return without baby-faced Ashley!

POP/ROCK/PUNK

5 Seconds of Summer

By5Secondsofsummer

Are they pop? Rock? Who knows, and, musically-speaking, who cares? All we know is that 5 Seconds Of Summer have given us two mega-strong singles – She Looks So Perfect and Don’t Stop – and their debut, self-titled album really lives up to the hype. Kiss Me Kiss Me with chunky guitar chords and an upbeat chorus is one of our faves. Let’s just take them as they are; four guys playing instruments and dominating the stage with their pop/rock melodies.

Fully Booked CRIME FICTION

Mr Mercedes

By STEPHEN KING

He’s called it his “first hard-boiled detective book” and boy the critics are loving it! In a high-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three heroes try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. Taking place in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed people are lined up at a job fair when, without warning, a lone driver in a stolen Mercedes runs over innocent folk, backing up, and charging again. The crime is left unsolved until six months later when retired cop Bill Hodges receives a crazed letter from the self-confessing perp. Mr Mercedes is a chilling story of good vs evil, with gritty characters in a dangerous world! It’s another great book from the undisputed master of suspense.

Now you can get more of an insight as to where you are on the Alpha-Beta spectrum!

Does this orb hold the galaxy’s fate in the balance? Will Peter be able to reunite his ragtag rivals? So.Many.Exciting.Storylines. Why it’s worth watching? We don’t know about you, but most of us in the FACT office are huge fans of Marvel so to find out that we’re going to get a bunch of new characters to admire is exciting news. Guardians of the Galaxy has everything you’d want from a film that’s expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe; an out-of-this-world setting; a rogue adventurer who takes something he shouldn’t have; a crew of good (-looking) superheroes who want to save the universe; and, of course, a villain - a dark-haired, devilishly handsome one at that too - all packed into two hours of Marvel mayhem. We love that Marvel is bringing to life more of its comic book characters, and actually using innovative tools to draw the audience in... go and check out ‘Galaxy Getaways’, a clever and fun way to discover paradise off of earth - what we believe the film will do, brilliantly!

The Expendables 3

retro Revival: Shoot. Print. Share

The Polaroid Socialmatic Camera could well be every instagrammer turned amateur photographer’s dream. Let’s find out if this cool device is a game changer…

Who remembers the old-school Polaroid cameras? You would snap a pic and out slides the result. Then (usually with a smug look on your face, all proud of your Polaroid) you would stand for a few minutes waving the photo around to let it dry. If, like us, you revelled in the simplicity of snapping your photos this way, then you might want to sit up and take note of the Polaroid Socialmatic Camera. First and foremost what this camera proves is that the good old Polaroid brand isn’t dead yet. What started as simply a 54. fact magazine

concept has now become a product with the look and feel of the original Polaroid styled with new school technology. It allows the user to take pictures, share pictures, and print pictures, all in one! With a 14-megapixel camera, a 4.5inch LCD touch screen display, and wifi and Bluetooth capabilities, the Android operated camera opens up a whole new world of social media-centric possibilities. After taking a photo with the back camera or the 2-megapixel front camera, you can immediately share your pic on

Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest using the built-in software on a wifi network. Now, you might think it sounds like a smartphone, but the Polaroid Socialmatic can turn your insta pics into instant prints in the real world, as you can print little 2x3 photos too (the Socialmatic takes 10 pieces of printing paper at a time, and is pretty easy to load!). Also, every image will have a QR Code embedded in the corner so that other Socialmatic users can scan it, get the digital version from Polaroid’s servers, and reshare or reprint it. As cool as that sounds, we’re not sure about having a QR code on every printed photo. The Socialmatic will be a Godsend to avid Instagram users, who can install the photo-sharing app right away. In this case, as hastags are all the rage and actually great for finding images, the QR Code feature seems unnecessary. The one thing that we are completely impressed with is the use of ZINK technology. Short for Zero Ink, ZINK produces photo-quality, full-colour output without using ink cartridges, ribbons, or toner. The fundamental concept is simple, yet extraordinary; heat from a ZINKenabled printer activates the unique colour-forming molecules embedded

This really feels like a throwback to the future and, for the sake of nostalgia, we hope that this reimagined device is exciting enough to carry the Polaroid name.

PRICE: TBA BUY: Available in shops from Fall 2014 Pros:Retro design with new-school technology and features. Cons: Users may get fed up of the QR Code feature. 14Mp Frontal Camera 2Mp Rear Camera 4.5” Touchscreen 4Gb Internal Storage Stereo Speakers GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth Frontal LCD with Mood Assistant A.

in the layers of ZINK Paper. Colour emerges from the ZINK Paper creating a full-colour print – voila! The camera also has 4GB of internal storage and a Micro SD slot, so there’s no stopping all those who want to take a selfie (or six), or anyone who wants to document their everyday life through taking photos. There’s a whole bunch of cool vintage-esque cases and accessories to go with the Socialmatic too, so the stylesavvy shoppers out there will be catered to as well. What remains of the Polaroid Corporation - PLR IP Holdings, C&A Licensing, Socialmatic and ZINK Imaging - are the four companies behind the Instagram-themed Socialmatic. The companies have the popular Polaroid brand, with its iconic look merged with up-to-date techie features, to give you the Polaroid Socialmatic Camera. This really feels like a throwback to the future and, for the sake of nostalgia, we hope that this re-imagined device is exciting enough to carry the Polaroid name.

CITY RIDES

THIS MONTH OUR RESIDENT MOTORING EXPERT reviewS Audi’s seven-seater Q7, a luxurious behemoth that is easily one of the best family carriers on the market today.

58. fact magazine

O

n the face of it, the Q7 has changed little since it was first launched back in 2005, save for a few minor facelifts and extra offerings in terms of gadgetry. However, the biggest change for this generation is the excellent 3.0l V6 turbo charged engine, which replaces the hugely thirsty 4.2l V8 that formerly powered the Q7. Despite the V6 being smaller and more efficient, it is still faster and more powerful than the V8, thanks to the turbo. It’ll do 0-100km/h in a commendable 6.9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 245km/h. The main selling points of the Q7 are its comfort and practicality. It is a very large vehicle with seven seats and plenty of room for cargo. There is a third row of seats in the back, which is functional, but cramped. It’s fine for children, but not so much for adults. Even with the third row seats up, the boot space is still large enough for a weekly shop or the school bags of six messy children. With the second and third seats folded flat, the cargo space is vast, making for a very useful and versatile vehicle. Bring it on, IKEA! However, this size does come at a price. Despite parking sensors AND cameras on both the front and rear of the vehicle, parking it anywhere tight is extremely tricky.

To summarise, the Q7 is a fantastic family carrier. It’s safe, luxurious, hugely spacious and versatile.

Despite its size, though, the Q7 handles almost supernaturally, thanks to Audi’s class-leading Quattro technology. To give it a bit of a test, we threw it into a hairpin turn at 70km/h, and the Quattro system simply turned. No understeer, or oversteer, or even noticeable tyre screech. It just turned. Further ‘enthusiastic’ driving on tight corners produced similarly impressive results. It is absolutely phenomenal for a vehicle that weighs almost two-anda-half tonnes! Which brings us to the reason why we feel that the Q7 is such a great family car. It’s not the many different seating configurations, or the third row of seating, or rear climate control. It’s the safety. If you want to ferry your munchkins around in a towering behemoth of sublime comfort and invincibility, the Q7 is your best bet. Aside from the fact that the superb Quattro system will handle almost any emergency manoeuvring at normal driving speeds with ease, the all-round curtain airbags front and rear ensure that, should the unthinkable happen, you’re all cocooned in a cushioned bubble of safety. Now, unlike other large luxury SUVs, the Q7 makes no big claims with regards to its off-road capabilities. It is lacking in gadgetry like terrain select, hill descent control and diff lock settings. This is a Chelsea tractor through and through! It does, however, have an off-road suspension setting that will raise the vehicle’s ground clearance to 240mm, to help you avoid catching that big front spoiler on things. And, the Quattro all-wheel-drive system also serves to make the Q7 surprisingly competent off-road. On gravelly climbs and soft sand, the power goes to where it’s needed to keep the vehicle on the move, and it made light work of the medium-difficulty obstacles we threw at it. To summarise, the Q7 is a fantastic family carrier. It’s safe, luxurious, hugely spacious and versatile. If you’re looking for an SUV for serious off-roading, this isn’t what the Q7 was made for. It was made for trips to football practice, school runs, and the occasional family outing to a camping ground or beach. And in Abu Dhabi, what else could you possibly need it for?

SUMMER CAR CARE

FACT’s Top 5 Car Tips

for the Summer! 1. Get your A/C serviced! In the hot months, you’ll use your A/C a lot more than the rest of the year, which drains the gas coolant more quickly. This means that it often runs out right when you don’t want it to, i.e. in busy traffic on the hottest day of the year. Trust us, it has happened to us, so make sure it’s all topped up!

2. Get your tyres checked!

This advice is sound at any time of the year, but believe us; the last thing you want to be doing at 2pm on a hot day in mid-August is changing a wheel! And remember, hot weather increases tyre pressure, so if you’re adding air to your tyres be careful not to over inflate them.

4. Get your windows tinted!

A professional window tinting service will add a protective layer of tinting to the windows of your car which will work to reduce the amount of the sun’s energy getting into your car. Not only does this reduce the heat levels, but it also makes for more comfortable motoring by reducing the glare of the sun when you’re driving.

60. fact magazine

3. Buy a windscreen sun shield!

As the blazing sun shines through the windscreen of your car, the vehicle essentially acts like a greenhouse, absorbing heat but not letting it out. Everything inside your car, including the steering wheel, dashboard, gear lever and seatbelt buckles can become hot enough to burn your hands when you touch them! Even after you turn the AC on and begin driving, the heat from the dashboard will continue to radiate out into the car for a while, prolonging your discomfort. Most of the sun’s heat is absorbed into a car through the windscreen and rear window, as these are the ones most tilted towards the sky. A windscreen sun shield shades the dashboard and stops it getting so hot, but the most effective type is the metallic shiny one that you can hold in place against the screen with the sun visors, as this type of shield reflects a lot of the sun’s heat back out of the car.

5. Don’t leave your mobile/iPod in the car!

Leaving your iPhone or MP3 player in the car in the blazing summer sun even for only a couple of hours can be catastrophic to the device. At the very least, when you get in you’ll get a warning message saying “Device too hot. Let it cool before switching on.” In this case, you’re lucky if none of the data has been damaged. At the very worst, you get into your car and pick up the device to find that awful telltale crack right down the screen. The heat has made the components expand until the innards have split, and your gadget is no more, so be careful!

An Extra Top Tip Check your oil!

“Oil is the lifeblood of your car. It keeps hardworking engine parts running clean, smooth and most importantly, cool. This is particularly important in the summer, since a hot engine needs all the lubrication it can get, and at high temperatures your engine’s oil is really getting put through its paces.”

6 Tips for Summer-Ready Skin

Having trained at prestigious makeup institutes like the London Makeup School, Esmod Dubai, Make Up For Ever, and Fat Mu Pro Makeup Academy, Reshu is also a Dermologica-certified skin care consultant, with renowned skills in airbrush and special effects makeup too. She passionately talks and writes about her art, life events and profession on her popoular blog www.reshumalhotra.com which now, for many women the world over, is fast-becoming a dictionary for beauty, fashion, styling and make up tips.

1. Hydrate Yourself:

4. Don’t Skip Moisturising:

We all know how important water is for our health and wellbeing, but do you actually drink your required daily intake of 2-3 litres? Drinking enough water will vastly help to improve the appearance of your skin by making it clearer and smoother for a healthier look and feel!

It can be tempting to cut out moisturing in the summer months because of excess oil on the skin. However, excess sebum can also be a sign of dehydrated skin. So, it’s best to use an oil free, water-based, moisturiser, different from that which you use on the body!

2. Embrace SPF:

5. Exfoliate Your Skin:

I believe that sunscreen should be the most important part of our daily skin care routine as uncontrolled sun exposure can really damage the skin. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go outside; reapply every two hours and always after swimming. When choosing a sunscreen, make sure it contains high SPF, is high in zinc oxide or high in titanium dioxide.

Sun, sand, sweat, and sunscreen only increase the amount of dead skin cells that build up on your face and body. Slough them off with an exfoliating scrub at least once a week. Try oatmeal mixed with rose water and natural yogurt to tackle irritated skin.

3. Cleanse & Tone Your Skin: Keeping your skin clean is very important to avoid breakouts and blemishes, especially in the summer heat. Always double cleanse your skin to help reduce build up of dirt and dust. Then comes the toner which helps to refresh and maintain your skin’s PH level and upkeep an even tone, as well as tightening pores and prepping the skin for moisturising.

6. Summer Makeup: The aim should be to keep your look natural during summer. Use a concealer to hide blemishes. Trade liquid foundation for a lighter, mineral-based powder or even a tinted moisturiser. Skip the creamy blush and instead go for a natural-looking glow with a touch of bronzing powder on the apple of your cheeks. Go for natural colours on your eyes and lips, such as coral, pinks and peach to offset the summery skin tone. fact magazine .69

hen FACT ventures to do a chef ’s table, we never know what to expect, and this month was a pleasant surprise. Meet Chef Georgy, the man behind a team of nine talented chefs cooking in the Porto Bello kitchen. The interesting fact; Chef Georgy has roots in Turkmenistan and Russia, but fell in love with Italian food when he first tried it. “Since I began to work in the kitchen, I liked French cuisine,” he admits. “But the first time I tried Italian food, I just fell in love.” And it was this gastronomic affection that led to Chef Georgy’s pursuit of Italian cuisine., which also led to him working for two Michelin Star Chef Marco Sacco in Piedmont, Italy. On to the food; first up was a Duo of Tuna and Scallop Carpaccio. Immediately, the colour and excellent presentation of the dish jumps off the plate at you; visually, it’s stunning. Our taste buds are soon jumping

with joy too as we get a lovely fresh outburst of flavour from the oranges, fennel and tonka beans - a great light starter. Next we’re treated to Risotto Milanese with Burrata, Black truffle sauce and blueberry sauce. The highlight of this dish was the kick of Saffron you get mixed with the acidity of the blueberry sauce – just exquisite. Chef Georgy reveals that Risotto is by far his favourite dish to cook and to eat. “It took me around ten years to find a good risotto recipe that I like,” he says. He also tells us that butter and eggs are his two favourite ingredients to cook with. “I use smoked butter for the risotto to give it a nice smoky flavour,” he says. Gearing up for another main, Chef Georgy brings out a plate of Sicilian lamb with Caponata and Carrot emulsion. The presentation once more is excellent! The lamb is slow cooked in a water bath and pan seared with rosemary and garlic. It’s juicy and succulent - a winning dish. We ended the meal with Three Way of Chocolate by Porto Bello, and scrumptious

doesn’t even begin to describe it. We loved the caramel coated almonds and popcorn – both complemented the tasty chocolate and added a crunchy texture to top off a palatepleasing dessert. At 28, and having worked four years for Grand Millennium Al Wahda, Chef Georgy recalls the early days of following his dreams to becoming a chef. “My family supported me and I started to work as the trainee in a family friend’s restaurant,” he recalls. “I was washing pots just to see what the chefs were doing, because you have to start somewhere.” Starting from the bottom to now being here in Abu Dhabi shows us just how passionate Chef Georgy is about his craft - anyone he’s tasked with cooking for is definitely in very good hands. VENUE REVIEW

Merge brand ethos with character, charm and individuality, and you get Market Kitchen. We went to Le Royal Meridien’s stylish venue to see what a relaxed evening dinner at this fabulous restaurant entails From the second you step into Market Kitchen, everything from the sophisticated décor to the two-level layout, and the open-plan style, reflects the restaurant’s roots. The Market brand was born in New York and the restaurant here, located in Le Royal Meridien hotel, has been inspired by Chef restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten. His concept of the “hotel as home” has been executed just perfectly at Market Kitchen; it almost feels like you’re not in Abu Dhabi anymore, until you look out of the large windows at the passersby. Still, at close inspection, we see that the urban-style venue also borrows from the ambience of ancient Arabian souks - contemporary finishings mixed with a subtle Middle-Eastern charm – we were onto something special here. The venue’s casual setting with trendy wood panel ceilings, simple, hanging light fixtures and an upstairs downstairs set up, caters for both those who want to grab a 76. fact magazine

laidback drink, and anyone who wants to have a chilled-out, hearty dinner. We opted to sit upstairs next to the bar, an intimate area with an open and inviting ambience. Beautiful exposed brickwork with shelves and ornaments add character and personality. You have the choice of the standard table and chair or, in the corners, comfy sofa-style seating. The menu showcases rich international cuisine as well as authentic local flavours. It’s splendid and simple; reflecting the elegance of the setting in which the food is served. Wanting to try something fresh, bold, and tasty, we ordered a variety of appetisers, mains, sides, and desserts (yes, it’s that easy to get carried away with a menu so focused yet diverse!). Out came Salmon Tartare with Avocado, Spicy Radish and Ginger Dressing; a Black Truffle and Fontina Pizza; and Grilled Jumbo Shrimp with Papaya Mustard and Avocado, for starters. Wow! The presentation of food looks effortless and the delicious pizza goes down a treat. Round two consists of Soy Glazed Beef Short Ribs with Apple-Jalapeño Puree and Rosemary Crumbs; Grass Fed Welsh Lamb Chops; Scottish Salmon; Grilled Asparagus drizzled with Olive Oil and Lemon; and two sides of Truffled Macaroni and Cheese, and Mashed Potatoes. The meat dishes were highlights of the meal. Cooked to a medium preference, the meat was seasoned very well. We moved onto dessert and there were two clear sweet champions; the Warm Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream, and the Salted Caramel Ice Cream Sundae with

Peanuts and Popcorn, covered in Chocolate Fudge sauce (yes it was as yummy as it sounds!). Highly recommended for anyone with a sweet tooth who doesn’t mind a dessert with a sweet/savoury balance. We thoroughly enjoyed this warehouse-esque, vintage-style venue with healthy portion sizes of mouthwatering food. It was great to see staff and the chef himself interacting with diners. A friendly and sophisticated dining experience that impressed us so much, we actually went back a few days later. fact magazine .77

HOTEL HOTSPOT

Raising hospitality standards As far as business hotels go, what you really want is simple home comforts, practical facilities and a few good dining options. Weekenders looking for a pocket-friendly stay, who don’t want to compromise on quality, Centro Capital Centre is just the right choice‌

B

usiness hotels aren’t always the first choice for mini-breakers or weekend travellers, but in Abu Dhabi there’s one property that is challenging the traditional expectations of 3-star standards. That’s right. Centro Capital Centre by Rotana is raising the hospitality game for hotels in the business travel category. When we stayed at the property, we found out just how and why Centro is a noticeably more superior accommodation choice than some of its competitors…

STAY: ROOM TYPES GALORE If you’re staying longer than a weekend we would highly recommend booking one of the two studio room types with enhanced amenities and more spacel

When you check into a 3-star hotel, there’s not always a wide variety of room types to choose from. More often than not it goes single, twin, double and family room. But, at Centro the room choices are aplenty. We had the pleasure of staying in a Queen Slick room, and, yes, it was just that – slick. Modern furnishings and practical use of space made getting around the room carefree, while a 4-star standard comfy bed, innovatively styled bathroom, top-of-the-

range technology, and fabulous scenic views, really make this room type perfect for business visitors, couples, and single travellers too. As well as the usual in-room amenities like tea/coffee making facilities, complimentary water bottles, a mini fridge, safe box, hair dryer, and toiletries, more essential things like having a good Internet connection and having a decent TV, are also things that get a big tick from us. Wifi was fast, whilst the 32-inch LCD TV made for great viewing during our down time! If you’re staying longer than a weekend we would highly recommend booking one of the two studio room types with enhanced amenities and more space.

EAT: SIMPLY DELICIOUS DINING

There are three dining options at the Centro Capital Centre; c.taste, c.mondo, and c.deli. We were particularly impressed with the breakfast spread at c.taste. There was a great selection of pastries, delicious hot food, cereals, hot and cold beverages, and in simple terms, everything you would expect from a good brekkie spread. There’s an energetic and upbeat vibe at the restaurant, and the all-day dining menu is packed with a delicious array of food for lunch and dinner too. For those on the go, c.deli is just right; it has some scrummy sandwiches, panini’s, salad boxes, muffins, cookies and other yummy snacks, all at reasonable prices, for any guests who want to grab a quick bite to eat. To end the day there’s c.mondo, a buzzing bar atmosphere serving drinks and tidbits for guests who want to unwind or mingle in a casual setting. In terms of variety and quality, the Centro’s dining options have got you covered! fact magazine

HOTEL HOTSPOT

In terms of variety and quality, the Centro’s dining options have got you covered. RELAX: RECREATION BOX TICKED

There’s nothing better than a quick cardio workout to give you an energy boost when you’re away on business. And even leisure travellers are more likely to want to upkeep their fitness regime when they’re away on a short break. Centro has no-nonsense recreational facilities to please even the most discerning traveller. Yes, there’s no luxury spa or fancy whirlpools, but that’s not what Centro is trying to be. The state-of-the-art gym is full of body-pumping equipment to suit every need, whilst the stunning rooftop pool is an excellent place to sunbathe and admire the far-reaching city views. What more can you ask for from what is officially certified as a 3-star hotel? 82. fact magazine

We wouldn’t just recommend Centro for business travellers, but also for holidaymakers wanting a good base from which to explore the city.

OPINIoN: WHAT FACT LOVES

Centro Capital Centre has a sophisticated and sustainable approach to hospitality. What it doesn’t do, and what we love, is that the hotel is not trying to be like its competitors, but instead has created its own dynamic identity through high quality finishings, stylish interiors (we wanted to take home the comfy couches in the lobby area!) and affordable accommodation. Even in the rooms, the design and layout is very clever; mirrors are incorporated in the décor to create an illusion of space and

practicality. Staff are welcoming and helpful (we were offered free wifi in the room when I needed half an hour access just to check my emails!) and housekeeping personnel were friendly too. Above and beyond, we love the location of the hotel. Right beside Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and only 20 minutes from the airport as well as 20 minutes the other way to the Corniche (and there’s always a bunch of taxis outside the hotel entrance). We wouldn’t just recommend Centro for business travellers, but also for holidaymakers wanting a good base from which to explore the city! After filling in the necessary pre-treatment information I was led straight into the treatment room. I soon realised why this was – the treatment area wasn’t just a room – it’s a huge space that houses an oversized bathtub, a shower and restroom and a changing area too. As far as adding a personal touch goes, this was incredible! Not having to be around other spa guests and having a large space with all required facilities just to myself, really made me feel uber comfortable and relaxed even before the treatment started. My lovely therapist Sangeeta, ushered

me towards a comfy a chair where your feet are placed in a large bowl of milk and rose petals. Sangeeta then let me decide which oil I wanted her to use. Immediately I agreed to lemongrass as it contained elements of relaxation. Sangeeta got to work straight away, using a range of techniques borrowed from the best massages around the world. The massage, as she explains, is a “therapeutic choice”, combining medicated oil massage sequences to target pressure points. Now, let me say, this was the first treatment that felt like a throwback to the days when my grandmother (a trained masseuse) would treat us girls to a relaxing massage in the comfort of our homes. Sangeeta’s pressure was brilliant with a soft touch yet vigorous strokes that allowed for painful muscles to become

SUMMER HEALTH

How To: Have a Healthy Summer From diet to exercise, summertime can be fun yet exhausting, making it challenging to keep up your health and fitness regime. FACT has some simple tips and activity ideas to help keep you energised, upbeat and in the best wellbeing as possible this month…

6 Foods to Eat in Summer and Why…

CORN

WATERMELON

ICED TEA

There’s nothing like delicious, fresh sweet corn on a hot summer day. The good news is that corn contains two antioxidants – lutein and zeaxanthin – which can act as natural sunglasses for the skin, helping to form macular pigment that filters out some of the suns damaging rays. Who’d have thought that these little yellow pockets of goodness could be so beneficial in summer?

It’s already a huge favourite in the region, and now is definitely the time to be tucking into wonderful chunks, or sipping on the ever-popular juice, of watermelon. This fruit helps to keep you hydrated, your memory sharp and your mood stable (take note office hot heads!) Another bonus: it contains 92 per cent water, which, according to research, will keep you satisfied on fewer calories

As well as being refreshing on a scorching summer day, iced tea can also do your body a whole lot of good! Numerous studies show that if you drink tea regularly, you could lower your risk of Alzheimer’s and diabetes, plus have healthier teeth and gums… but, how? It’s the class of antioxidants called flavonoids that maximise the power of tea on your health!

GREEN SALAD

CHILLED SOUP

RASPBERRIES

Salads are light, fresh and super healthy at any time of year, so there’s no denying that a big bowl of beautiful greens will help to keep your energy levels up and your spirits high in summer. Go for variety and add spinach, bitter greens and coloured peppers for texture, flavour and vibrancy in your simple salad.

If losing a few pounds is also part of your health and wellbeing goal then eating chilled soup at the beginning of a meal is highly recommended. Cold soups are low in calorie, and some of the yummiest include gazpacho or cucumber-dill, both with lots of chunky veg! These broth-based soups will fill you up so you’ll eat less during a meal.

Did you know that one cup of raspberries has eight grams of fibre? Eating foods rich in fibre may help prevent weight gain, which, for anyone looking to upkeep their beach bod, is a good foodie deal. Not only are raspberries a great source of fibre but they also contain pectin, which helps lower cholesterol – perfect!

DID YOU KNOW? Corn: One bushel of corn will sweeten more than 400 cans of Coca-Cola Vegetables: The highest amount of vitamins and nutrients are contained within the vegetable’s skin and the layer directly underneath it. Watermelons: Watermelons originally came from the Kalahari Desert region in Africa, which is interesting because the average watermelon is 92 percent water.

88. fact magazine

Iced Tea: The famous long island iced tea drink doesn’t actually contain any tea. Salad: The medical practitioners Hippocrates and Galen believed that raw vegetables easily slipped through the system and did not create obstructions for what followed, therefore they should be served first. Raspberry: There are over 200 species in either red, purple, gold or black.

Beach Yoga Guaranteed it’s very hot outside, but beach yoga sessions under a shaded area or in the evenings when it’s a little cooler, can work wonders for your summer soul. There are so many benefits to doing beach yoga and number one is to get the ultimate mind and body experience. Listening to the sound of waves and inhaling the smell of saltwater can calm the mood, whilst sunlight is also beneficial to the body – boosting your vitamin D intake as well as helping those with SAD (seasonal affective disorder) feel more upbeat! GO:

Visit www. meetup.com/ Raw-Yoga/ for more information on beach yoga in the city.

Paddle Boarding If you love being on the water in summer then paddle boarding is perfect! SUP otherwise known as Stand Up Paddling, is a surface water sport that dates back to the 1960s and originates from the Hawaiian Islands. It’s where the surfer uses a paddle to move through the water whilst standing on a jumbo-sized surfboard. The benefits to SUP are endless; it helps

to improve balance and coordination, develops strength and endurance, and , as it’s a low-impact sport, paddle boarding can also help to release summer stress, leaving you feeling relaxed and invigorated! GO:

Visit www. abudhabisup.com for more information on Abu Dhabi’s own paddle boarding community and more about the sport.

Pilates Who sits on an office chair all day long? If you’re muscles are feeling tense and rigid then Pilates is the best way to work out all those kinks this summer. Incorporating a range of physical movements that focus on pulling the navel to the spine, working out your core area with breath work and stretches, Pilates will stretch and elongate muscles, hence strengthening your summer bod! It’s mindful and holistic with both physical and emotional health benefits!

Zumba This is definitely one of our favourite ways to keep energized and stay fit throughout the season. Zumba is great for all ages and offers stress relief as well as engaging a number of muscles when you’re doing choreography. The best thing is that, often, you don’t realize just how many traditional exercises like squats and lunges, you’re doing during the fun class. It’s a social, upbeat fitness choice that also tightens and tones from head toe, and the best thing is that there are so many classes to choose from around the city… so, no excuses! GO:

Your three favourite foodie spots in the city and why... I am always up for tasty and super healthy salads at Leopold’s of London, divine drinks at Hakkasan and some Asian food in a relaxed, yet happening, atmosphere at Cho Gao.

Describe your ideal day off in the city... Start the day with an art workshop at Manarat Al Saadiyat. During the day, either, be on, in, or next to the water. 90. fact magazine

I’ll go for a dive around the island, do kayaking at the mangroves, go on a boat trip, or just spend the day at the beach. For a perfect finish to the day, I would go for a run or cycling at the F1 track, or end the day listening to local bands and musicians at an Open Mic Night, or even do yoga on the beach followed by a nice dinner out with friends, at one of the beautiful terraces in Abu Dhabi.

Tell us about one hidden gem you’ve found in Abu Dhabi that blew you away... The One Café. With its cool decor, theatre (menu) concept and hidden location (in the middle of home accessories store) it’s a great place for a meet up with friends (if they manage to find the spot!) and to enjoy a funky interpretation of classic dishes in an arty environment. Highly recommended for a laid back Friday afternoon catch up with your besties.
