We’ve got another packed few weeks of exhibitions, events and projects including the first UK solo exhibition from award winning American artist and filmmaker, Sharon Lockhart continuing as part of the 2014 Liverpool Biennial. Until 14 September, in collaboration with Liverpool International Music Festival, we are hosting We Buy White Albums, the world’s largest collection of The Beatles’ White Album first editions.

David Michôd’s bleakly atmospheric film – which packs the same visceral punch as his Animal Kingdom – has all the atmospheric desperation of The Road and the Mad Max saga.

A student (Johansson) is kidnapped and surgically implanted with a vial containing a mysterious substance.

Although the substance is designed to substantially increase the brain’s processing power, it may kill her if it leaks into her body – which it does. Aided by a sympathetic police captain (Waked, Syriana), she rushes desperately to seek help from renowned psychologist Professor Samuel Norman (Freeman), even as her cerebral skills are multiplying exponentially. As medical science comes ever closer to enhancing human intelligence, this gripping story also possesses a stark topicality.

An ageing actress (Wright) takes one last role, and submits to a scanning process that will preserve her image forever. When she’s then invited to attend the Futurological Congress, she encounters the animator responsible. Based on a novel by Stanisław Lem (Solaris), The Congress is both a sobering comment on fame’s transience and a dazzling visual feast.

After the obvious slapstick of We’re the Millers, Aniston stretches herself impressively as kidnapped housewife Mickey Dawson in this Elmore Leonard crime caper, with solid support from Def and Hawkes, who demand a ransom from her cheating husband (a wonderfully arrogant Robbins). This typically wry yarn from Leonard is directed with unshowy skill by its screenwriter, Daniel Schechter, the chemistry between Aniston and Hawkes in particular rendering it exceptionally watchable.

In Corbijn’s (The American) appropriately shadowy adaptation of John le Carré’s post-9/11 thriller, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the head of Hamburg’s antiterrorist unit on the trail of a jihad mastermind. With perfectly calibrated plot twists courtesy of Lantana screenwriter Andrew Bovell executed in understated style, this is a great ensemble piece with characters rather than individual actors driving the action.

It’s 1984 and the Miners’ Strike is causing great hardship, especially in one remote Welsh pit village. Despite some misgivings, a group of young gay activists led by bolshy Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) decide to raise money for the community, but when they travel down to deliver the funds they’re unprepared for the homophobia that greets them. In only his second film, noted theatre director Matthew Warchus (Matilda the Musical) expertly finesses knowing humour, indignation and sexual politics, while the performances are uniformly pitch-perfect.

The game here is the superficially benign pursuit of golf. But director Baxter’s coruscating 2011 documentary You’ve Been Trumped exposed Donald Trump’s plans to build a golf resort on ecologically endangered Scottish coastline, and this film literally revisits the same territory while also recording a remarkably similar struggle taking place near Dubrovnik. In both cases public opposition is treated with disdain, but ultimately truth and reason prevail.

Liverpool Biennial 2014: Sharon Lockhart Galleries 1, 2 & Public Spaces / FREE Entry / Tue – Sun / 11am – 6pm

FACT and Liverpool Biennial present the first UK solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Sharon Lockhart.

Known for creating film and photography portraying often overlooked subjects in everyday life, Lockhart’s practice is underpinned by a commitment to immersing herself in new environments and building intimate relationships with people and places.

Perhaps the most significant of these is her friendship with a young Polish girl Milena, with whom she has formed a continuing collaboration, three separate aspects of which are now on show at FACT.

FACT and Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) have joined forces to present this incredible, obsessive vinyl project by New York based artist Rutherford Chang.

Inspired by We Buy White Albums, we are hosting a vinyl fair with Dig Records (Bold Street) and have a host of Beatles themed bands from around the world performing in the square in front of FACT.

Come along to browse the albums, sell your own first pressing, or to listen to live acoustic music presented by Liverpool International Music Festival at one of our exclusive late night openings.

Chang’s mission is to travel the world buying copies of The Beatles’ White Album, which he displays in exhibition and pop-up spaces.

Plants surround us all the time and are vital to our well-being. However, their behaviour, constantly escapes human perception. What if we could see and hear what they “talk about”?

World Wilder Lab explores how the flora and fauna of the café at FACT reacts to their surroundings. Through visuals generated from real time data, and displayed on digital screens, they aim to give vegetation a voice.

A trio of super-bright, super-cynical business students apply the ruthless capitalist logic they study by day to the college prostitution ring they run by night.

This raunchy and brutally funny film dissects the power plays and factions at an ultra-elite university, and in doing so lays bare the mores of France’s Generation Y.

When an eleven-yearold girl jumps to her death, social services seem unable to discover why. Avranas’s second feature is a shocking family drama, and a powerful dissection of silence, manipulation and the exercise of power.

But despite massive critical acclaim, Big Star’s career was woefully mishandled by their record companies, and before the release of their third album they disbanded in despair. Four decades after that break-up, this documentary pays them due homage.

Community & Learning Human Beeings Big Bees on Big Buildings We’ve teamed up with Berlin based art and technology collective, The Constitute to bring Human Beeing to Liverpool. The project has set up bee hives on urban facades in Helsinki, Berlin and Liverpool. Here in Liverpool we have partnered with Beekeeper Andrew Hubbard and students from The Academy of St Francis of Assisi to care for a hive situated on the roof of the school. As well as looking after the bees, the students have been filming the hive daily. Footage will be used to projection-map onto Ropewalks Square at a special event with talks, food and music in October.
