Q&A WITH MELISSA HISTON OF HEY SOUL SISTA

Façon editor-in-chief Lara Lupish sat down with Melissa Histon to chat about her podcast "Hey Soul Sista" and her journey so far.

The Hey Soul Sista podcast leads a series of conversations with various public figures, thought leaders and real women who all have stories and life lessons to share. Melissa Histon, founder of Got Your Back Sista charity and host of the Hey Soul Sista podcast believes in giving every woman a voice. Mel keeps the conversation real, and explores the success, failures, learnings and insights from incisive humans on how to live a happier, joyful and productive life.

Who are some of your guests on the Hey Soul Sista podcast who have left a lasting impression on you?

This is a tough question – so many guests have left a lasting impression! Amber Moncrieff is still the most listened-to episode of all time on Hey Soul Sista. She shares her story of being raised by a single mum, becoming a lawyer and now running a plastic surgery business. Karin Adcock was a mum of three young girls when she introduced Pandora jewellery to Australia and built a multimillion-dollar empire. And Rebecca Gibson, Kaz Amos and Charlotte Thaarup are regular guests as they really provide such interesting and soulful perspectives on living a happy, soulful life.

What wisdoms do you walk away with each episode? How does it make you feel?

After each episode of the Hey Soul Sista podcast I’m a little wiser and am inspired by the special guests – brave, successful and wise women – to do life better and in a more soulful way. I think we are all trying to do life the best we can in a happy, fun and soulful way. Life can certainly throw some curveballs at us though, some bigger and harder than others. It is through women sharing their stories, their challenges and traumas, but also the wisdoms and life lessons they have learned along the way, that can help us all to navigate our own lives.

Tell me a little about the Melissa Histon journey.

Sometimes life seems like a series of random moments and events without any meaning or purpose, but when I look back over my life I can see how those supposedly abitrary moments make sense and led me on my crazy life journey. I’m a mum to four kids. I have a marketing degree. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 35 and spent 12 months in treatment for it. Though it seemed dreadful at the time, the breast cancer led me to re-starting my photography business, which led me to travelling to Nepal for a sex trafficking documentary project, which led me to starting The Sista Code events and blog, which led me to establishing the Got Your Back Sista charity, which led me to producing the Hey Soul Sista podcast. I can’t wait to see what is in store for me in the future!

Your podcast is very popular and has gained a serious and strong following reasonably quickly; what do you attribute that to?

I think we all want to live the best life we can, and so many women I know are open to and looking for insights on how to do just that – live our best life! That is the feedback I get from women who follow the podcast; they get inspired by the stories and wisdoms from my guests each week, tips and strategies to live life a little better each and every day. Plus it’s free and an easy-listening entertainment!
