Hired a third FACE teammate!

STORY OF THE YEAR I haven’t been able to pray, since that day. Because how could he be a “man of God” and do this to me?! How can he be “chosen by God” and do what he did?! How could he be living his best life after he ruined mine?!

His name, till this day, gives me a panic attack. I can’t say it out loud. It would sicken me to see the words “honorary” or “esteemed” before it. I would block every Instagram account I came across with him featured on it. The more “famous” he got, the further my relationship with Allah (swa) got. I felt like I couldn’t get away from him. His words would echo in my head constantly “you’re not worth my time or attention” I let those words define me for too long.

I got the text from a friend “have you heard…” with a link to a Twitter thread. I fell down on my knees crying. I thought I was the only one. And then I blamed myself. Had I told someone, anyone, about what he did to me, maybe he wouldn’t have done it to others.

But I’m done blaming myself. After my interview with Alia and Sara I fell down in sujood. I prayed. I felt like something heavy was lifted off me. Im thankful for them being an outlet for a grief I held on to for so long. And I’m ready to take my power back.

ORGANIZATIONAL SHIFT IN 2022 FACE’s mission until now had focused primarily on the idea that we wanted to hold abusive religious and community leaders accountable. As the years started to progress we began to realize something important; not only is it impossible for us to hold people accountable, it wasn’t our place. Through our work and the articulation of meaningful accountability models by thought leaders and mentors, it became clear that our role was to support victims & survivors, model a transparent and victim-centered approach, and help to inspire the cultural pivot necessary for leader accountability to not only be possible, but to be commonplace.

THE NEW MISSION & VISION MISSION

FACE’s mission is to drive focused cultural change among Muslims that leads to transparent survivor-centered community safety and leader accountability, outside the criminal legal system, for those who abuse their positions of trust and authority.

VISION

FACE’s vision is to realize a community that is known for its unfailingly survivor-centered, transparent, and outspoken approach to leader accountability by prioritizing victims and vulnerable people above reputations and institutional protection.

2022 STRATEGY The FACE team came together in December of 2021 to discuss the previous four years of our work and where we see the organization going over the next five years. In addition to our new mission and vision, below are the 4 strategic priorities that we put on our plan for 2022 as an investment into the next five years of FACE work.

To increase and model transparency and accountability in all aspects of FACE work output as well as internal actions even, and especially, when it is uncomfortable to do so.

This includes work output, finances, conflicts of interest, etc.

To produce exceptional and captivating materials that are impactful and beneficial that will contribute to sustainable and reliable culture change.

To simplify, modify, and codify FACE processes & protocols that hasten work output and engenders dependable, transferable, and sustainable models that withstand disruptions, turmoil, and change.

GROWTH To establish a dynamic environment of ambitious growth that cultivates strength, healing, and sustainability the victims FACE serves, and our team members.

Adult Abuse Cases 72%

Out of 131 eligible cases for review, 28% (3i7) contained allegations of child abuse.

Here, "Converted" means that they were moved past the first stage of meeting necessary qualifications, and considered for an intake.

SURVIVOR SUPPORT This department has aided survivors of clergy abuse - some who are participants in FACE investigations, and some who are not - with finding accessible and affordable mental health support. FACE facilitated mental health services through intakes, connecting with therapists who may be a good fit, and offering to pay for the first 10 sessions of therapy for each person who voluntarily opts-in to this resource.

OUTREACH HIGHLIGHTS Launched FACE sister organization in South Africa, "People Eradicating Abuse in Community Environments" (PEACE).

Launched FACE's International Collective which spans four continents and over six countries including Pakistan, Indonesia, Bosnia, South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

10 active FACE Ambassadors are working on case studies, cult research, islamic school & abuse research, investigation support, victim support, marketing, fundraising, and administration.

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH We published our 53-page code of conduct called "The Code" along with our "Community Response Toolkit."

12 downloads of each in the first 2 months!

Communities that have downloaded the code & toolkit have spanned as far as Bosnia, Indonesia, and Germany.

FACE conducted 95 consultations for individuals and community representatives and leaders requesting advice, training, and guidance on responding to abuse, background checks, and process implementation.

2022 & BEYOND COMING SOON: The FACE online victim support group with a licensed PsyD facilitating. The first of its kind!

A FACE app with a streamlined reporting tool, survivor support network, and easy access to educational resources.

FACE is partnering with Muslim women business owners to launch a merch store with custom swag and unique gifts centered around community and healing.

March 4th-6th: Religion and Sexual Abuse Conference.

March 25th-27th: Muslim Mental Health Conference.

MORE NEWS: FACE’s contracted Administrative Assistant was hired on as a full-time Operations Coordinator in January 2022.

Sara Bawany was promoted to the Director of Case Management in February of 2022.
