Honoring the movement for LGBTQ+ rights and celebrating LGBTQ+ culture, Pride Month began after the Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests in Lower Manhattan, New York, in June 1969. The following year, the first pride marches were held in several U.S. cities as a commemoration of the "Christopher Street Liberation Day" riots, and as a way for the LGBTQ+ community and their families to celebrate.
