1. Ryan Gosling* (actor) Prior to his studly face melting the hearts of women around the world, Gosling spent a few years of his youth in Cornwall, Ontario.

2. Alanis Morrissette (singer/songwriter) Alanis was born and raised in Ottawa, and is most famous for her album Jagged Little Pill, which skyrocketed her to the top of the music charts around the world.

TOM CRUISE:HIS OTTAWA STORY Morton states in his book that upon arriving in Ottawa the family settled into a home on Monson Crescent in Beacon Hill. The book quotes Tom Cruise as saying, “…I didn’t have the right shoes, I didn’t have the right clothes, I even had the wrong accent”. Tom Cruise is said to have knocked on doors to proudly introduce himself to his new Canadian neighbours.

The book clearly makes one feel as if Cruise struggled to fit into life in Ottawa. Tom Cruise was a victim of bullying from some of his new classmates at Robert Hopkins Public School.

The bullies preyed on Cruise for his size (Cruise stands at 5 foot 7 today - he was quite small for his age at that time), his learning disability (dyslexia) and for being American. Cruise would later speak about how his experiences with bullying affected him, “My childhood was extremely lonely. I was dyslexic and lots of kids made fun of me. That experience made me tough inside, because you quietly learn to accept ridicule”.

Morton alleges that Cruise’s father dealt with bullying himself in school and that it “scarred him for life”.

Tom’s father did not want that to happen to his son, which made him constantly remind Tom to stand up for himself.

Tom’s father, if the book is accurate, would tell Tom that if he got into a fight with a bully and lost, he should go and fight the bully again.

Morton claims that Cruise commented on this, “So many times, the big bully comes up, pushes me, and your heart is pounding – you sweat and you feel like you are going to vomit.

I’m not the biggest guy in the world, I never liked hitting someone but I know that if I didn’t hit that guy, he’s going to pick on me all year”. Tom continued to take on bullies until they backed down and gained his respect. Ultimately, Tom became one of the most popular kids in school.

While it appears that Cruise suffered internally during the early stages of his time in Ottawa, it seems he had a real talent and true passion - one that would eventually catapult the youngster to international fame and stardom.

Cruise joined the Drama Club at Robert Hopkins Public School becoming a key performer in many different plays.

It seems that Tom Cruise began to hit his stride and excel during his time in Ottawa, finding his love for the stage and performance.

In the fall of 1971, a young family from New Jersey packed up their belongings and headed north to Canada to start a new chapter in their lives. The Mapother family seemed like any other family as they crossed the border into Canada. Thomas Mapother III was bringing his family to Ottawa where he had been hired to work in the Canadian military. (Source “Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography” author Andrew Morton).

He was married to a beautiful girl named Mary Lee and they had four children: three daughters named Lee Ann, Marian and Cass, as well as a son – Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. Ottawa quickly became home to the boy who affectionately became known as little Tommy Mapother. Unknown to the city at that time was that little Tommy would become one of the biggest entertainment stars in history.

Morton writes that many excellent teachers at Robert Hopkins helped Tom overcome his learning disability, especially when it came to memorizing long pieces of dialogue. Tom was said to excel during performances and received rave reviews from those in attendance.

Even at a young age, those in attendance could see there was something special in young Tommy Mapother.“Even thirty years later, it still gives me goose bumps” , the book quotes teacher Wendy Santo.

Off the stage Tom Cruise seemed to find a love, like any other kid growing up in Ottawa, for the game of hockey. Tom and his group of friends played countless games of road hockey on the streets of Ottawa in the summer, hitting the ice in the winter. Tom, if he had gone on to play pro hockey, would likely have become one of Don Cherry’s favourites as he was a smaller guy who didn’t back down from the rough stuff.

As would be expected from a kid who would become one of the world’s leading men, Tom Cruise appears to have had a natural gift with the ladies at a young age as well. The book states that Tom would go home

from school during his lunches to change into fresh new outfits for the afternoon classes, seemingly for no other reason than to impress the girls at school.

Morton quotes Tom’s teacher Pennyann Styles as stating, “…he had charisma. He was a standout because he was so good-looking. Even then, he had the smile that he has today. Little Tom was attractive, outgoing and slightly mischievious, but not bad. The kind of kid you recognize and remember”.

“You know, I didn’t have the right shoes; I didn’t have the right clothes; I even had the wrong accent.”

The book goes on to claim that Tom organized parties for the boys and girls, and that he was seen as a “bad boy who was on the outside of the rules”. Morton quotes a few tales of classmates of Tom’s, who got to lock lips with the “dreamy American with the cascading hair and the sultry smile”.

By the time that he and his classmates transferred from Robert Hopkins to Henry Munro Middle School Tom Cruise had become the coolest kid in school. The book refers to a class picture where Tom is alleged to have oozed a cocky confidence that any 6th grader could only dream to match.

As dreamy as the young Mr. Cruise was to the 6th graders of Ottawa it appears that another dreamboat was about to challenge him for the title of the King of Beacon Hill. The book alleges that one street over from Tommy Mapother lived another boy, who would also one day find a way into the hearts of millions of women around the world. This new challenger, a brooding young stud, would woo the ladies with a series of power ballads that no woman could resist. The book claims that Canada’s rock icon, Bryan Adams, lived one street over from Tom Cruise in Beacon Hill. If true, the rest of the 6th graders in Ottawa had no chance with this dynamic duo likely stealing kisses and melting hearts at every bell-bottomed slow dance across our fine city in the early 1970’s.

According to the book, it seems as if Tom Cruise overcame the initial struggles he felt fitting in with his new peers in Ottawa. Tom excelled in theatre, was popular at school and fell in love with sport during his time in Ottawa (Tom Cruise to this day can often be seen sitting at the Staples Centre for many of the Los Angeles Kings home games).

Unfortunately, Tom’s successes were not replicated by the Mapother family. Morton alleges that the Mapother marriage began to break down while they lived in Ottawa, which eventually led to Tom’s mother getting the children to pack their suitcases and leave in the middle of the night. The book states that Tom’s mother drove her four children from Ottawa to Louisville, Kentucky (800 miles) leading to the unfortunate, premature end to what seemed to be a great match between Tom Cruise and the city of Ottawa.

Tom Cruise will always be seen as one of the most successful movie stars the world has ever seen. Tom’s time in Ottawa was not very long (less than 4 years), but if Morton’s book is accurate, then he definitely made quite an impact on several people in our city. This is why we felt it was worth telling Tom Cruise’s Ottawa story, as set out by Andrew Morton in his book, “Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography”, which was released in 2008 and is available at bookstores everywhere.

Editors Note: We must note that this biography has been criticized by those in the Tom Cruise camp, so we cannot say with certainty that its contents are 100% accurate.

However, since the Ottawa chapter of the book was never refuted by Cruise’s representatives, we decided to use it as the primary source for this story on his time in Ottawa. We have been in contact with Mr. Cruise’s representatives and are attempting to put together a formal interview on his brief time in Ottawa for June 2014.

TOM GREEN Tom Green’s creative career began right here in Ottawa. Whether you saw his stand up at Yuk Yuk’s, watched his show on local TV, or knew someone who knew him personally, almost everyone in Ottawa has some kind of connection to Tom Green. Even If you don’t have a connection you probably have an opinion about him.

Tom Green created a show that grew from its humble beginnings on Rogers Cable to an international success on the Comedy Network and eventually MTV. He was nominated for a Juno Award as a rap artist. He starred in hit comedy movies in the 1990s and 2000s. Now he is running his own production studio in Los Angeles, hosting his own television show on AXS TV and crafting his own beer. Not too bad for a kid from Pembroke who grew up in Ottawa Q: When did you know you wanted to do comedy?

A: I started doing stand-up when I was 15 years old at Yuk Yuk’s in Ottawa but I knew I wanted to be involved with comedy even before then. I was always an outgoing kid who loved performing, being on stage and in-front of people. I just knew that comedy was something I wanted to

do from an early age. My early days at Yuk Yuk’s started me on the path of looking at show business as a potentially real thing to pursue.

Q: Did you enjoy being part of a rap group growing up?

A: I had a rap group in Ottawa when I was a kid called Organized Rhyme. When we formed the group we were one of, if not the only rap group in the city. It wasn’t like New York or even Toronto where there were hundreds of groups. In Ottawa, we were a big fish in the small pond of Canadian hip hop. It was a very encouraging and exciting time where we felt that we were breaking new ground.

Organized Rhyme landed a record deal in Canada and we were nominated for a Juno Award.

Shortly after that I went on to study television broadcasting at Algonquin College.

Q: How did you get your television start in Ottawa?

A: I was doing college radio at Algonquin and I just had a vision for what kind of show I wanted to make. I wanted to do a sort of outrageous, guerilla-style version of The David Letterman

Show. The Tom Green Show was based on this premise and launched on Rogers Cable. The show percolated for 6 years in Canada and grew a bit of a cult following. Eventually it was picked up by the Comedy Network and then MTV. It was a very exciting ride that continues to be exciting.

Q: Do you still keep in touch with Glenn and Phil from your Rogers Ottawa days?

A: I stay in touch closest with Phil. He and I are tight and we’re still good buddies.

Q: What do you like best about Ottawa / coming home?

A: I like that Ottawa has all the benefits of a big city without the downsides of a big city. It’s beautiful and the only place in the world that I really know so well. I grew up skateboarding across the city and I know Ottawa inside and out. I’ve got a lot of friends here and the city as a whole has been very supportive of me throughout the years.

There is a comforting feeling whenever I come home to Ottawa.

Aside from seeing family and friends, I love the city as a whole. It was a great place to grow up and it’s a great place to live. Frankly, if I wasn’t

FEATURE living in Los Angeles I would be living in Ottawa.

I miss the city, which is why I come home so often.

Q: Do you still have a place in Ottawa?

A: I no longer have a place in Ottawa, but my parents and brother live in Ottawa and I come back to visit them all the time.

Q: How has Ottawa helped shape you?

A: Being in a political city where things can get somewhat uptight and conservative on the one hand, you have a creative community who kind of rebels against it on the other hand. That’s one thing I don’t think a lot of people realize about Ottawa – we do have this really great, creative undertone.

Ottawa is not a huge metropolis so everybody kind of knows each other within certain subgenres. When I was growing up all the skaters knew each other, all the people in music knew each other, etc. At the time, anyone doing something creative was part of such a small community in Ottawa. This group was very supportive and encouraging, which helped make things comfortable.

It was a great place to learn how to do radio and television without having to feel the pressure of the big, competitive nature of Toronto. In Ottawa you could experiment and try things that may not have been possible in a larger, more competitive environment.

When I started doing stand-up in Ottawa there were only a few people doing comedy at the time, which meant it didn’t feel overwhelming or impossible. If you kept at it and didn’t quit you were able to develop a different style that may not have been possible elsewhere.

Q: Do you prefer stand-up, television or acting in movies?

A: I really prefer doing television and stand-up because they are my passions. I love when things are spontaneous and real, and just having conversations with people. Stand-up is just like a conversation that also allows for improvisation.

While I also like making movies I just don’t pursue them and never really have. They come to me sometimes, like when I was doing MTV a lot of those opportunities came to me - I never went looking for them. I grew up as a fan of David Letterman and always wanted to try and emulate his show in my own way. This is why I have always focused on TV. I have fun with movies but prefer television and stand-up.

Q: How did you get involved with AXS TV? A: Mark Cuban, who owns AXS TV, has been very supportive of me and my ventures. AXS is a great network with a lot of room for spontaneity and ‘anything can happen’ programming. I was doing stand-up shows and was approached

by AXS to do Gotham Comedy Live from New York. I had an incredible set and everyone really enjoyed it. I started talking with the network about my ideas about a live talk show and it has been a perfect fit.

Q: Tell me about Tom Green Live! What attracted you to returning as a talk show host?

A: I’ve got a new show called Tom Green Live! that just premiered on AXS TV. It’s a live, 1-hour talk show every Thursday night where I have a great time with a guest. We recently had shows with comedy icon and author Richard Belzer, Canadian comedian Howie Mandel and skateboarding legend Tony Hawk.

I’ve built my own studio in Los Angeles called Tom Green Studios, which is where we broadcast the show. It’s an exciting time for me and a real dream come true. I’ve never had my own studio before, which is something I have been working towards for some time.

Unfortunately the show is not yet available in Canada, but through the clips on tomgreen.com and youtube.com/tomgreen you can virtually watch the show. Hopefully a Canadian network picks up the show and can re-air it in Canada.

Q: Who is your favourite interview over the years and why?

A: On AXS TV I’m spending a whole hour with one guest, which is modeled after shows like The Tom Snyder Show and The Dick Cavett Show. I may take things to a bit of a sillier place, but it’s not an over-the-top goofy show. If I have a serious guest I am happy to have a serious conversation. Richard Belzer, an American comedic icon and author, was on the show and we talked about the serious books he penned about JFK. If I have a comedy guest then it can get outrageous. We had Howie Mandel on the show and it was hi-

FEATURE larious. I think I’m getting better at it every day and learning things as I go, which makes the interviews I’m doing now so great. It’s funny; the interview I did with Tony Hawk on October 17th may be my favourite interview I’ve ever done.

Tony Hawk is someone who I idolized as a kid and has now become a friend of mine. He’s got so many interesting stories and it was great to spend a full hour with him under the new format of Tom Green Live!

Q: How involved are you with social media?

A: Clips from my shows are posted on YouTube and I have a podcast at tomgreen.com, but Twitter is where I am most active. The best place to reach me is on Twitter @tomgreenlive.

Q: What led you to make your own beer?

Why Beau’s?

A: I had been partying on the road and drinking beer with my fans and I thought it would be cool to have my own beer. I love drinking beer, especially Beau’s, so partnering with an Ottawabased, family-owned and operated organic brewery was a good fit.

The guys at Beau’s and I had some mutual friends and we bounced around the idea of making a beer. I approached them and they were fans

of my show on Rogers Cable and the Comedy Network growing up. They loved the idea and we went on to make a milk stout beer, which Beau’s had never done before.

Tom Green Beer is brewed with milk sugar, which gives the beer a chocolate and coffee-like flavour and sweetness. I used to spray people with milk bags so the guys at Beau’s thought that would be a good ingredient relating to the Tom Green Show.

We’ve brought the beer to a number of shows and the feedback has been very positive. It won the Ontario Craft Brewers Association People’s Choice Award for Best Beer last year. That automatically won us the prize of being placed across LCBO stores. The beer will be available at the LCBO starting in early November. It’s not in Los Angeles yet, but it will be next year.

Q: What’s on Tom Green’s music playlist right now?

A: I listen to a lot of the same music I listened to in high school. Right now my top three favourites are A Tribe Called Quest, Joy Division and Arcade Fire.

Q: Where does Tom Green hope to be in 5 years?

A: I’m just a few weeks into opening and running Tom Green Studios, which is an amazing facility with web and TV production capacity here in Los Angeles. We’re beginning to do internet and web broadcasting next month. In 5 years from now, if everything goes according to plan, we’ll be growing our studio, making TV, continuing to be creative and enjoying the process of making people laugh.

CAROLYN WALDO What was it like winning a silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and two gold medals at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul?

As a Montreal-native, what drew you to Ottawa?

I went to the 1984 Olympics just to soak up the atmosphere and gain the experience. 4 years later, at the 1988 Olympics, I treated it like a job. Winning double gold was a huge thrill and made me so proud to be Canadian!

Who was your favourite interview and why?

I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to compete at 2 Olympic Games.

Do you still swim today?

I don’t swim at all anymore! I pretty much gave up swimming after the Olympics. I guess I was water logged after training 6-8 hours daily for 9 years. You might tempt me if it’s a scorching hot day, and the water isn’t too cold.

How did you get involved with sports broadcasting?

While I was training for the Olympics, I was intrigued by the industry after being interviewed regularly by reporters. After the interviews were done I ended up turning the tables around, asking the reporter’s questions about their own jobs and lives, and realized it was perhaps my calling.

I grew up in Montreal but never really had the opportunity to visit Ottawa. When I was offered my job with CJOH TV after the Olympics, I jumped at the chance to come to Ottawa and make the Nation’s Capital my home.

I have interviewed so many wonderful and inspirational people, which makes it really tough to choose. One interview that I reflect back on, is interviewing professional tennis player Jesse Levine (ranked as high as 69th in the world) when he was just 5 years-old. I was looking for talented kids. Here was this little kid nailing every shot with his big stuffed teddy bear watching courtside. His interview was just priceless. Nothing like the honesty from a child’s mouth!

As a role model for young athletes, what message or advice would you offer?

You have to love what you do. If you don’t enjoy what you are doing it’s hard to have success.

What do you like best about Ottawa?

I fell in love with the city immediately! I love all the green space, the bike paths, and felt it was a great place where I could raise a family.

Kira Isabella 2013 Canadian Country Music Award Winner: Female Artist of the Year OTTAWA’S GIRL NEXT DOOR IS COUNTRY MUSIC’S NEXT SUPERSTAR Kira Isabella has a decade of experience under her belt performing her brand of up-tempo country music across Canada - an impressive feat since she is only 21 years old. She has been unstoppable since her first recital at the age of seven when a fervent passion for belting out any song led her to enter every singing competition within driving distance from her hometown of Ottawa, Ontario. Her charming stage presence, bubbly personality and natural talents led her to win nearly every competition.

Kira was always looking for an expressive outlet and eventually the effervescent girl began dabbling in guitar, and writing poetry and lyrics about love, life and boys. She has since penned several tracks herself and performed hundreds of times. An immersed student of her craft, Kira delved into a variety of music, but it was when she discovered the likes of powerhouse country vocalists Shania Twain and Faith Hill, that she knew she was hooked on country.

Continually perfecting her craft set Kira Isabella apart from the crowd and she developed her stage presence skills anywhere she could. This hard work eventually led to her performing with the likes of Canadian country stars Jessie Farrell, Aaron Pritchett and Gord Bamford. By 2009 the buzz surrounding Kira’s powerful pipes and dynamic sound couldn’t be ignored any longer, and she was signed to Sony Music Entertainment Canada.

In 2011, Kira released her first single “Love Me Like That,” and it was a runaway hit crossing over into the Canadian Hot 100 Chart, while also earning a 2012 Canadian Radio Music Award in the Country category at Canadian Music Week. The debut single is a perfect example of Kira’s desire to tell a story with music. It’s a story of a girl in young love with all its innocence, and talking on the phone all night, being told you’re beautiful and wanting that perfect boy.

Kira continued her rise all through 2012 performing at various summer festivals around Canada such as Boots and Hearts Festival and Big Valley Jamboree, and releasing another single “A Little More Work.” The track quickly climbed up the charts with its catchy melody and infectious hooks and was another hit for the young artist.

Her hard work was rewarded in the fall of 2012 with a Canadian Country Music Award for Rising Star - a highlight for the young songstress, and solidified Kira’s arrival on the country music scene. If the accolades of awards weren’t enough, Kira was added as support for select dates on Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour in October of 2012 just in time for her debut album release Love Me Like That, on October 2, 2012.

In 2013 things really took off when Kira was nominated for a JUNO Award in the Breakthrough Artist category, and just one year after her first CCMA nod, she won the 2013 CCMA for Female Artist of the Year.

10 Tips for Small Business Owners

1. Have a plan. Too often, small business owners get so caught up in day-to-day operations that they neglect long-range planning. If you have a business plan, update it to reflect your current goals. If you’ve never written a business plan, do so—it will force you to think about what you want to achieve now and beyond.

2. Take action. Don’t put that business plan in a drawer and forget about it. No matter how busy you are, set aside at least one hour a week to assess your progress toward the goals you’ve set.

Together with your partners and key employees, create action steps and set deadlines for accomplishing them.

5. Upgrade your equipment. Whether it’s technology tools like tablets and smartphones or a new pizza oven for your restaurant, small changes can make a big difference to your bottom line.

Decide what investment would have the biggest impact on your productivity and profits, and figure out a way to make it happen.

6. Delegate. It’s tough for small business owners to give up control, but delegation is essential for business growth. Give employees more autonomy so you don’t become a bottleneck in your organization. Try to structure operations so you can focus on your strengths and delegate the rest.

Celebrate success.

7. Take charge of your finances. If you’re not already using accounting software, make the upgrade. A program such as QuickBooks is inexpensive, easy to learn and makes budgeting and forecasting simple. QuickBooks, and other accounting software, can even be purchased online and installed very quickly.

8. Plan ahead for financing. How will you finance your business growth plans? If you can’t fund growth from profits, investigate options for outside financing, whether from bank loans, private investors such as angel capital groups, or your friends and family.

9. Start socializing. No matter what your industry, almost any business can benefit from social media. If you aren’t currently using social media, resolve to try at least one social network. If you are active on social media, step it up a notch by learning more about your favourite social network, posting more often or adding more videos and photos to your mix.

No matter how busy you are, be sure to celebrate when you, your employees and your business achieve important goals. Taking time out to recognize results will re-energize you and your team for the next challenge.

STARTING A NEW JOB?

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN REVIEWING YOUR EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT Getting a job offer is generally excellent news.

Having successfully gotten through the application and interview process, few people are keen to kick-start their new career by appearing to be ‘difficult’ about the terms of their new employment contract. It is, however, important to take the time to read and understand the agreement.

If down the road things go pear-shaped and you find yourself receiving a letter terminating your employment, the terms of that contract may take on particular significance. Here are some items to consider: 1.Non–Competition Clauses: As a general principle, Canadian courts are reluctant to enforce non-competition clauses in employment contracts because they limit a person’s freedom to work in his or her area of expertise. If there is such a clause in your contract you may want to consider asking the employer to remove it.

Potential employers may see the non-competition clause as a possible risk which could be enough to rule you out as a candidate.

2.Termination Clauses: The purpose of having a termination clause is to give both the employer and the employee some certainty about how matters will unfold when the employment relationship comes to an end. The Employment

Standards Act, 2000 sets out the minimum amount of notice (or pay in lieu) that the employer must give if the decision is made to terminate your employment (without cause).

Generally speaking, the minimum standards are usually less than the amount a workers without an employment contract would be entitled to receive at common law. You may want to consider negotiating for notice that is more in line with the common law.

3.Vacation: Employees must, at a minimum, receive 2 weeks’ vacation a year and receive at least 4% of wages as vacation pay. Contracts with “use it or lose it” language which provide that you must either take vacation or else the vacation entitlement disappears may fall afoul of the provincial legislation.

4.Discretionary Bonuses: If your contract provides a bonus at the employer’s discretion, ask to have the bonus pay process spelled out.

Generally it is a percentage of salary given for meeting a target that is agreed to in advance.

The more central bonus payments are to your compensation package, the more important it is to have clearly laid out targets along with a common understanding of how successfully achieving those targets will be measured.

5.Start Date: Where an employee starts working without signing a contract, a Court will apply the common law to answer questions like “what kind of notice is the employee entitled to?” If you have already been working for an employer when they present you with an employment contract it is worth understanding what you might be giving up (along with what you may be gaining).

6.Reference to Other Documents: If your employment contract states that you have read and agree to be bound by certain corporate policies or procedures, make sure that you are provided with a copy of those policies and that you review them before you sign.

Electric Toothbrush Advantages

Many people ask, “Am I brushing my teeth properly?”

Having clean teeth and gums requires good technique. Brush your teeth for two to three minutes, making sure to cover all surfaces of your teeth - especially around the gumline where plaque tends to accumulate.

It is usually best to start at the very back tooth.

Choose a side to consistently start with each time you brush as this will help to build a good routine.

Start brushing the outside surfaces of your teeth and gums (don’t forget the gums), holding the bristles at a 45° angle using a short, circular motion.

Spend about ten seconds at each area, then move a little forward, slowly making your way all around to the other side. Come back around on the inside until you get back to the starting tooth.

Finish up by brushing the biting surfaces. Avoid scrubbing as this can damage gums and enamel (think of it as massaging instead of scrubbing).

Brushing harder is not better and will actually do more harm than good.

I also routinely get asked “Should I be using an electric toothbrush instead of a regular manual toothbrush?”

Although many people manage quite well with a regular manual brush, an electric toothbrush does provide some advantages.

Saliva can dissolve some of the sugars and also help re-harden the enamel, but this takes about twenty minutes.

Therefore, contrary to popular opinion, it is actually better to wait twenty minutes after eating sweet foods before brushing and flossing. Rinsing with a mouthwash containing fluoride, especially before bed, will also help reduce the chance of cavities caused by sweets and goodies. So enjoy, but remember, when it comes to sweets, moderation is key!

A:The three most important things to look for are: 1. Passion: Someone who will eat, sleep and breathe training.

There are many trainers out there who treat their job as just that – a job. Steer away from these trainers and find someone who makes their training methods a way of life.

2. Continuing Education: There are no trainers out there who know everything, but there are some very, very smart people.

Look for a trainer who understands your individual goals and who goes out to find the latest research on how you can achieve them.

3. Personality: Simply put, not every trainer is right for you.

At the end of the day, you’re going to be spending countless hours and sharing a lot of personal information with this person. Be sure when you meet a trainer that you connect with on a personal level and feel comfortable sharing things with that person.

Q: What’s one thing you dislike about the fitness industry?

A: The lack of open-mindedness. Crossfitters will tell you that you need to crossfit, Paleo eaters will tell you that you need to consume the equivalent of a dead cow each week to get shredded, and gluten free wheat belly readers will tell you that bread is the #1 leading cause of cancer. The fact is, there are many different approaches to achieving your fitness goals, but no one approach is perfect. People in the fitness community get too emotionally attached to their methods. Being open-minded allows you to continually learn how to make your training approach even better.

Q: How long have you been involved in the Greco Kanata Franchise?

A: I started out in 2007 as a trainer. I worked at the Kanata location during the summer while finishing up my University degree in Waterloo. In 2011 I joined up with a few partners to take ownership of the franchise.

Q: Tell us about the Greco Kanata franchise – what experience do you offer that perhaps other gyms do not?

A: As I said before, not everything works for everyone. I believe our location is successful because we care about the people we train. Life can get in the way of even the most dedicated people. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires a solid strategy.

Here are 5 practical tips to help get you started and, more importantly, keep you going: 1. Consistency: The big C word. You can have the best trainer, fanciest gym and most elaborate meal plan written out. The fact is that if you’re not consistent your results will be imaginary.

Does eating every meal out of a plastic container make you the talk of the office? Stop doing things you hate and start with changes that you can actually see yourself sustaining.

Solution: Some of the most successful gyms in the world are successful simply because people love being there. Try things out. Most gyms offer a complimentary class. Take advantage of such offers until you find something you like.

4. You don’t have a training partner: This ties in well with enjoying what you do. Not only will a partner push you, it turns the workout into more of a social event. The other benefit to having a good training partner is they will help get you off the couch when those thoughts of skipping the gym come creeping.

Solution: Find a person who has a lifestyle similar to yours.

If your training partner works a 9-5 and you do shift work, chances are you’re going to have a hard time coordinating a schedule. Setup consistent workout times and be sure to help keep each other on track.

5. You don’t have a plan: Sure showing up is the first step, but what is the point of showing up if you don’t know what to do?

That old saying “if you fail to plan then you’re planning to fail” is very applicable when it comes to the gym.

Q: Tell us about the history at Fresco Bistro.

A: Fresco Bistro is a pretty special place if you ask me. Not only does it have a great history with over 20 years of memories and great people on both sides of the counter, but it also has some pretty interesting characters that make up the team and provide the foundation upon which the restaurant has been built.

It was originally opened by two friends in 1991.

It was taken over by my brother (Matt) and I in 2005 and has been evolving ever since. In 2010, we introduced the Guest Room which is an amazing space we created on the second floor of our Elgin Street location.

It operates a little differently than the main floor bistro – it serves food until 2am 7 days a week.

It has a classic-vintage, eclectic feel, specializing in great tunes, progressive cocktails and a wellpriced quality wine list.

Last year we opened a brand new location on the border of Stittsville and Kanata. We are located just around the corner from the Canadian Tire Centre on Hazeldean Road, where the tradition of good times continues.

Q: What’s new at the Fresco Guest Room?

A: We recently did a slight remodel. An amazing new booth section beside the bar has been added, as well as a great new late night menu.

By relocating our food preparation area to the main floor kitchen we are able to offer a better, late-night-specific menu that takes less time to prepare. That means more variety and faster service for our guests.

Q: Why did you decide to expand to a second location in Kanata/Stittsville?

A: We decided to expand to Kanata/Stittsville because we noticed a growing suburban population with very few options for good homemade food. Having been around for while - we also recognized that many of our old regulars were moving out to the suburbs. Although there is always a new cycle of tenants to Elgin Street and new regulars, we thought it would be nice to bring the food and atmosphere to them rather than wait for them to come to us.

Q: What do you think has been the biggest factor in making Fresco such a success?

A: The people. Our staff are hard working, conscientious, fun people who love to host good times and prepare amazing food. We don’t miss the details and try hard to deliver a quality experience from the moment the guest arrives and is greeted at the door.

Q: You’ve recently updated your menu for the season what changes did you make?

A: We did some seasonal changes to our menu and omitted some items that would be difficult to stock during the winter. We added some delicious

Q: You have received numerous awards and accolades for your charity work. Which award means the most to you?

A: You don’t become a volunteer to win awards. It’s very wonderful that people recognize volunteers for their work, but most volunteers would admit that you get so much more than you give.

I’m very fortunate and grateful for the opportunities I have had but, like most volunteers, I am doing it because I want to make the world a better place. Every child deserves an equal opportunity regardless of their family’s income.

Q: How did you get started as a journalist?

A: In the 1960s, if you were going to make it in journalism you had to make it to Ottawa as a parliamentary correspondent. The only thing higher in the field would be a foreign correspondent. I had worked in newspaper and radio in Newfoundland and was even a DJ. In Halifax I did a radio call-in show called Keeping Speaking, and also sports on TV. All the while I wanted to be at the top, and I aimed for Ottawa.

I eventually got to Ottawa at CFRA and made it to Parliament Hill as CFRA’s correspondent.

After a year with CFRA I got an opening with CTV as their parliamentary correspondent on the national news.

After an unsuccessful attempt as a politician, I returned to Ottawa and became the news director at CJOH. I had always been a reporter, but in December of 1972 I became the news anchor at CJOH news. Some 7,000 newscasts later I finally retired.

Q: What was it like running in the 1972 election?

A: I ran and got defeated. In fact, I was the first to be announced as defeated on election night.

When I went to the riding in my hometown in Grand Banks, Newfoundland I discovered that half of the riding didn’t get CTV and therefore didn’t know who I was. To make things worse for me, my opponent was responsible for paving the highway from Grand Banks to St. John’s - cutting the drive time in half. How could I say vote

You get so much when you just meet with people. The inspiration that I see daily from people is amazing. One story that comes to mind is of a man from Westboro. He would get up at 6:00am every morning to clean the park near his house so the children could have a clean and safe play environment. He didn’t have his own children at that park, and nobody knew who he was. This gentleman felt that a clean park was his award, and he didn’t want any recognition.

Ottawa is the most caring community in Canada.

I only hope that I have been able to contribute to that through the culture we tried to build at the CJOH newscast. We talked about what people were doing to make the community better, and I’m hopeful that this helped inspire others to donate their time and/or money to charitable causes.

Q: How did the Max Keeping Foundation come to be, and what was your vision for the foundation?

A: All of us at CJOH were involved in some community initiatives. Everyone was volunteering their time to various charities and we wanted to be part of something that was doing good in Ottawa. The Max Keeping Foundation, which is coming up on its 20th year, started when a couple of friends approached me to setup a foundation to help children in Ottawa and the surrounding communities. I had already been doing this for years, but having a foundation provided us with the tools needed to reach a much larger group of children in need.

The primary criteria for assistance is low income. The foundation supports athletics, the arts, scholarships and much more all across Ottawa.

Helping children get a proper education means that we can break the poverty cycle. Every child deserves a fair chance and opportunity, which is

what the Max Keeping Foundation is all about.

Q: What do you like best about Ottawa?

A: The individuals and communities that make Ottawa such a great city. Over the years I’ve had the privilege to meet so many great people from all across the greater Ottawa area. Listening to these people and learning their stories and community histories has allowed me to make connections with people. These connections have allowed me to be a part of so many wonderful events and causes in Ottawa, for which I am so thankful. This is what makes Ottawa so great - the community connections that continue to make Ottawa even better every year.

Q: What is the greatest moment of your journalistic career?

A: Spending Christmas of 2006 with the troops in Kandahar, Afghanistan. I was part of a group led by then-Chief of the Defence Staff Rick Hillier that included John Baird, Rick Mercer and Mary Walsh. The purpose of the visit was to give the troops a morale boost and, most importantly, to thank the honourable men and women who put their lives on the line everyday for our great country.

It was especially close to my heart because many of the troops were based in nearby Petawawa, and also because many of the troops, like me, are Newfoundlanders. I had the great honour and privilege to serve food to the troops on Christmas day. During the entertainment part of the evening I joked to Rick Mercer that he better be funny because there was a large tent filled with 1,000 soldiers that had two beers for the first time in a long time, and they all had guns beside them!

The troops were amazing. The crew from the H.M.S.C. Ottawa presented me with a cheque for $5,000.00 as a donation to C.H.E.O. The troops were all so appreciative that we gave up our Christmas to visit and thank them, but for all of us it was the most amazing, moving and humbling way to spend Christmas day.

Q: What message would you like to give others?

A: My message has always been the same - every child should have the opportunity to soar.

Children from low income families dream too, which is why they deserve the same opportunities as children from high income families. We as a community have that responsibility.

Each and every one of us has the capacity to make someone’s life better. You don’t have to do it with billions of dollars. Something as simple as offering a smile to a stranger can have a large positive impact. I encourage everyone to ask themselves, “what have I done today to make someone’s life better?” It doesn’t take much to make the world a better place. maxkeepingfoundation.org

Q: Tell us about your career and some of the fun positions you’ve had over the years?

A: I’ve been fortunate enough to work in the sports industry for 15 years after graduating from the journalism program at Carleton. I did a couple of seasons in media relations for both the Ottawa Senators and the Ottawa Lynx. But my true passion was always sports reporting, so I was thrilled when I was offered the job as bureau reporter for Sportsnet back in 2001. I spent 12 years there and really enjoyed my time at the network and doing the TV thing. But now I’m ready for a new challenge on radio Q: You’ve recently joined TSN 1200 - what made you decide to get into radio?

A: The biggest thing travel, which I felt was taking its toll on our family life with the Sportsnet job. I was missing far too many of our kids’ events and there was no sign of it letting up. Our daughters are 9 and 6 and I had missed far too many birthdays, school events, etc. Sure, I got to cover major events like the Olympics in London or the World Cup in Germany, but what was the point of it all if I couldn’t spend quality time at home?

So when the opportunity to make the switch to radio was presented to me, it was a no-brainer. I get to stay in the field that I love, but also get to spend every night in my own bed. It was a win-win situation.

Q: What was your favourite moment covering the Senators?

A: I was fortunate enough to host the Sens broadcasts on Sportsnet for 7 years, so I have a ton of great memories from that. Being in Buffalo on the night Alfredsson got his 1,000th point is probably at the top of the list.

I was also in Buffalo on the afternoon when Alfredsson’s OT goal put them in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time ever - definitely a cool moment to experience first-hand. Wait - the fact that two of my career highlights are from Buffalo is a little disturbing....

Q:Who are some of the most memorable Senators you’ve interviewed?

A:Alfredsson will always be near the top, just because he was so classy to deal with -- win or lose. There are some players who blow you off after a

loss, but Alfie was never like that. I have also enjoyed dealing with Jason Spezza on a regular basis. Watching him evolve into a team leader and spokesman has been a fun process. He’s a very insightful and articulate person. Best thing I ever did was take Erik Karlsson to IKEA for a fun feature right after he was drafted. If we tried to do that now, he’d get mobbed by fans.

Q: Why did you decide to get into journalism, is there someone you looked up to in the business?

A: I have wanted to be in this industry since I was about 10 years old. I used to watch Hockey Night in Canada and was always in awe of Dave Hodge, Ron MacLean and Dick Irvin. Those guys were my heroes growing up. I always wanted to be involved with NHL broadcasts, so to be able to do that for a few years was an absolute thrill for me.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a dad?

A: I love the fact that I can now buy Cinnamon Toast Crunch and popsicles and claim that it’s for the kids. But in all seriousness, being a dad is a really fun job. If you do it the right way, it’s far more rewarding than anything you can accomplish career-wise. I love walking my kids to school every morning and tucking them in at night -- that’s when I find out the most about what’s going on with their friends and how they are doing at school.

Q: What is something most people don’t know about you?

A: I have never taken a sip of coffee in my life. Seriously, not even one sip. Now that I’m 36, I feel like it’s too late to try it now. It’s kind of my one weird thing.

Q:What is something most people don’t know about your co-host Shawn?

A:The guy does most of our show with his shoes off. And he often puts his socked feet up on the desk while he’s talking. I’m happy to report he does not have a foot odor problem but I am concerned about the situation when he wears insulated boots in the winter. Hot and sweaty feet could be a game changer for me.

SHAWN SIMPSON Q: Tell us a bit about your playing career.

A: I grew up locally and got drafted by the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds. I was fortunate enough to become an OHL all-star, which led to my biggest highlight – representing Canada at the World Juniors. The brawl itself (1987 World Juniors) was more fun than winning a gold medal and it’s been a great story to tell.

Q: How did you get your start in broadcasting?

A: While playing for the Washington Capitals AHL team in Baltimore I started doing some colour commentary on the radio. My coach and management would listen to the games and say I was doing a good job. I eventually got hired to do radio and TV broadcasting in Washington.

Q: What was it like being involved in scouting and management?

A: I was a scout for the Washington Capitals in the 1990s, which was a great experience but not nearly as glamorous as you might think. Being a huge history buff, it was great to travel the world and see some amazing places and connect with great people – that really helped shape me.

After six years as a scout I was promoted to director of hockey operations for the Capitals.

Although it was a great learning experience that I really enjoyed, looking back on it now I think I was probably a bit too young for the role. I eventually left the Capitals to join the Toronto Maple Leafs as a scout.

Q: What was it like living in Russia and being part of the KHL? A: Being in Russia and Eastern Europe gives you great perspective. I love Russian history, and living in Belarus taught me a lot about hockey and life as a whole. Coming back to Ottawa, you really appreciate the city – it’s a utopia. All my travels just gave me a greater appreciation for how great a city Ottawa truly is.

Q: How did you become part of TSN1200 in Ottawa?

A: I had no real plan to get into broadcasting. After my time in the KHL, one thing led to another and I was presented with some different opportunities. While living in Boston I became a fan of sports radio and thought it would b something I’d enjoy trying. A lot of sports radio personalities

are former players. As a former player, scout and manager I have experiences that bring a different opinion and view point. I ended up moving back home to Ottawa, and joined TSN1200 in 2012.

Q: What do you think it is that makes your perspective different?

A: I think that when you’ve worked in hockey and understand some of the pressure points of working in management you get a different perspective on how things are done.

In addition, I’ve been to so many countries throughout my career and met so many contacts.

It’s not just about knowing people, but also knowing their background and where they are from. When you work in hockey the fun is in the debate. If I have an opinion on something and you disagree, come with an intelligent opinion and tell me otherwise. That’s what sports radio is all about.

Q: What’s your take on the Senators this year?

A: I enjoy seeing the Senators do well and it’s fun to see the city when everyone is pumped up.

If you look at their core compared to Boston or Detroit, who are both aging teams, the Sens have a great nucleus of talented young players.

They’ve done a great job drafting.

I think the Leafs also have a great core, which sets up a great Battle of Ontario for years to come. The Sens are a playoff team trending in the right direction to be a legitimate cup contender.

The biggest thing is that I blazed my own trail.

I did a lot of different things and I’ve succeeded and failed. Failure really does give you a better appreciation, and I don’t think you can really appreciate anything until you’ve failed. Everybody is different that way. I see things in a different light then other people.

Q: What have you enjoyed most about broadcasting?

A: Every day I walk in it feels like home – great atmosphere, great people – I just love what I’m doing. When you work in other markets, like Boston which is a four-sport-town, you are covering so many different things. In Ottawa it’s all about hockey, which is nice for me because it’s my expertise and background. Radio is very real and very natural because you talk and debate.

Q: What was it that attracted you back to Ottawa?

A: Stability. I was in Washington during the economic downturn, which was a very trying time for everyone. Coming back to Ottawa, you didn’t feel the effects of the downturn nearly the same.

In other cities that I’ve lived in you always have your guard up, but in Ottawa you just don’t have to. Ultimately, Ottawa is just home.

MEDIA I NT E RV I EW Q: What is your media background?

A: I began acting at a young age. I took some acting classes at summer camp, was a member of an improv team, and a contributing writer, actor and director of the assembly committee at Fisher Park High School. After graduating I acted in a number of local independent films, commercials, and portrayed over a dozen characters in a local murder mystery dinner theatre company called ‘Big Time Murder Productions’.

Q: What is your pre-game routine for prepping for a show?

A: I arrive at the station between 8:00am and 8:30am to review the notes I prepared the day before. I go over names, websites and do some follow up research – usually looking for visuals to add to each segment. I also look at local, national and global news updates. Because our show is mostly about local information and entertainment I also try to share a funny story with viewers.

Q: What do you think makes Daytime Ottawa unique?

A: The atmosphere that the entire crew creates for our guests. Many of our guests have never been on television before and we take great pride in making them feel comfortable and prepared. Lois, our producer and I always meet with each guest before the show to make a connection and build some chemistry.

Q: What has been the craziest show that you’ve done to date?

A: That would have to be the year my former co-host, TL Rader, and I dressed up as Wayne and Garth from “Wayne’s World”. Our costumes were bang on, and so many people were impressed that we were able to stay in character for the entire show. It made for some great reactions from our guests. To be honest, every one of our Halloween shows end up being pretty crazy.

Q: What is something that most people don’t know about you?

A: I was born with a birth defect called high imperforate anus, which is a missing or blocked opening of the anus. That meant I required immediate surgery and had to wear diapers until the age of 12. I was bullied relentlessly as a child because of my medical condition, but I had an amazing support system that helped me through those difficult times. Those experiences helped shape my personality and I learned to look at the condition as a blessing rather than a curse. I still have to wear protection to this day.

Q: Can you tell us something most people don’t know about your co-host, Lois Lee? A: Lois was the JELL-O-eating champion at her high school! She absolutely loves food, and has even admitted to getting food drunk on more than one occasion.

Q: What do you like watching on TV? A: I enjoy watching football, hockey, documentaries, DIY shows and Glee. Yes, I’m a Gleek!

KENYA HELP? The Kenya Help? project provides orphanages in Kenya the tools to help them become self-sustainable. Food, healthcare and education are the primary focus of the not-for-profit project that is at the forefront of making change for the children of Kenya.

The project started at the Sidai Rehabilitation Centre in Ngong, Kenya, and is now touching the lives of many children at different orphanages in that area. Based in Ontario, the founder of the project, Nancy Stevens, travels to Kenya to work on construction projects to better the lives of children. Nancy Stevens tells us more about her project.

In the fall of 2008, donations touched the hearts, minds and tummies of over 100 children in Africa. We raised money to provide children with mosquito nets for malaria prevention, a classroom filled with schoolbooks and supplies for ongoing education, first aid, and best of all – chickens for their Christmas dinners! That’s when Kenya Help? (KH) was started!

I first travelled to Kenya in 2008/2009 with the intent to give basic childcare to orphans and underprivileged children. However, the money raised allowed me to provide so much more. KH now supports over 3,000 children in orphanages and schools, with food, education, clean water and healthcare.

People from ALL across Ontario have been raising money to support these children. In 2010, the KH team spent the month of June constructing a chicken coop, playground, security gates and also buying new shoes for the children. We also had 1.5 acres of corn and beans planted so the orphanage can self-sustain.

2011 proved to be another successful year for KH. We were able to fence another orphanage and put up security gates and build desks for 100 children. In addition, we donated truckloads of food and first aid, installed 120 solar lights in the local orphanages and school, purchased new beds and mattresses, planted more crops, and delivered 50,000 litres of water.

In 2012, the focus was on education and proper nutrition. KH returned to the Kibiko Primary School where over 1100 children are educated.

The children go to school from 8-5 and have no food or water throughout the day. KH built a cookhouse so the children can be fed once a day. The school was also re-roofed, floors were poured, windows installed, and electricity was wired for the first time in 8 years.

In 2013, a new team arrived and built a school outside the Mathare slums.

We built the school, filled it with desks, school supplies, and a 5,000 litre water tank. We delivered 200 pounds of first aid, 300,000 litres of water, food, and supplies to the local orphanages. We also fed over 6,000 meals to children.

We are already making plans for 2014. There is a small school in the Rift Valley that houses 85 students with another 450 sitting outside to listen through the window. The KH team are going to change that and give these kids a better future.

Kenya Help? continues to make global change by helping orphaned and vulnerable children attend school and get proper nutrition for a better future.
