NFL Wide Receiver, 6-Time Pro Bowler and Member of the 2000’s All Decade Team

TERRELL OWENS Terrell Owens is a great role model.

To some of you, that may seem like it was a sarcastic remark and I respect that. I would have felt the same way about a week ago.

However, I ask you to have an open mind as you read this interview.

I ask you to picture yourself as an 11 year old boy living across the street from a nice man and his family. You don’t have a dad around to play catch with you, take you to a ball game or to teach you about being a man. Your mom is also not around much and you are being raised by your grandmother.

One day, you find the girl across the street attractive - then and only then - are you told that the man across the street is your father...

Yes, your father had been living right across the street from you for the first 11 years of your life because he had an affair with the 16 year old girl across the street - and you were the product of that affair.

This is not make believe. This was the very real childhood of Terrell Owens.

Instead of letting this heartbreaking moment define him, Owens used this disappointment and emptiness as fuel to become one of the most dominant receivers the National Football League had ever seen. He also entertained the fans in a way that has never been duplicated (although often imitated) with his touchdown celebrations and his flamboyant personality.

There is an old saying that, “You can’t judge a man until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes” – I don’t think that this saying could apply to anyone better than Terrell Owens His story is inspiring and sends a powerful message to parents around the world about the difference about being a dad and a father.

We caught up with Terrell Owens at his home in Los Angeles as he prepares to come to Ottawa for the 3rd Annual Casino Royale on June 13th: 6 | May 2014

You were a star in several sports when you were in high school – football, baseball, basketball and track – what sport did you enjoy playing the most when you were a kid?

Probably basketball and baseball – those were the two that I really enjoyed. I also ran track in high school, but baseball and track season ran simultaneously. So when I didn’t run track I would play baseball and when I didn’t play baseball I would run track.

You played basketball, football and track at University of Tennessee Chattanooga (UTC).

At what point did you decide to pursue football? Did it ever cross your mind to become a two-sport athlete like Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders?

Honestly, it never even crossed my mind. I never really had any aspirations to pursue anything beyond the collegiate level as far as football was concerned. I was just a kid who had potential and the ability to play a number of sports that I enjoyed and I just played. I basically went to UTC on the limb of somebody else. They were heavily recruiting another receiver from my high school, but they saw me on the tapes and offered me a package deal to go as well. I never really knew or thought I would become a big star or anything like that. I just kept working hard and once I got there as a freshman, the coach at the time, Buddy Nix, didn’t believe in playing freshmen unless you were the star coming out of high school – like a high school All-American. I didn’t meet that requirement or have the skill set to play at that time. I was pretty much a late bloomer in a sense.

We read that you were a big fan of Jerry Rice growing up. Tell us a little bit about what it was like being drafted by the 49ers and having the chance to play alongside your idol? What advice, if any, did he give you?

I wouldn’t say that I knew much about the NFL or football in general growing up. I didn’t really get a glimpse of Jerry Rice until my sophomore year in college. I wasn’t really a big football person – I didn’t really watch pro football. Growing up in the south it was mostly college football so that’s what I was really drawn too. I was watching Auburn and Alabama when I was growing up because that’s where I lived and what I heard about.

When I got to college and saw a Monday Night Football game it was a 49ers game. I sat down in the dorm and watched Jerry Rice and saw how amazing he was. I was like, “Man, this guy is good.” But even then it never really dawned on me that I may play in the NFL. I just went about doing my thing.

After my freshman year, I started playing better. My sophomore year, I came back from the summer break having trained hard – I lifted weights and I ran because I wanted to be bigger, faster, and stronger. I knew that if I wanted to be anything I had to bring myself up to the talent level of the guys who were around me. I just went home after my freshman year and worked hard.

All my teammates noticed the difference when I returned back to UTC. I was pretty much a self-made guy who put his head down and worked hard.

My sophomore year I played pretty decently. In October of my sophomore year we played the defending national champions of the previous year, the Marshall Thundering Herd. They came to UTC and we beat them 33-31 and I had all 4 touchdowns in that game, which put me on the map of relevance. In my junior year, people started to know me. Obviously in my senior year, coaches and players would say that I may have the ability or opportunity to play on Sundays. But even with that I never thought I would make it.

After football season was over, I played on the basketball team. I walked on the team and made it through tryouts. I really loved basketball so much that I wasn’t concentrating or even thinking about football. Not to say that I thought about going professional in basketball. I was just competitive, it was something to do and I enjoyed playing sports. Even as my collegiate playing career progressed I started getting scouted for football, but I continued playing basketball even though some told me to quit in order to prepare for a career as an NFL player. But I loved basketball so much that I couldn’t quit. Thankfully, my basketball coach was very accommodating to me, the football schedule, and the scouts.

I ended up getting drafted to the 49ers, which was unexpected and a great opportunity. I knew going into the draft that just because you’re drafted doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a spot on the team. I was drafted in the third round as 89th pick, but I was projected to go second round. I was watching draft day with my family on campus at UTC and the second round came and went.

There were only two picks left in the third round and my agent was confident that the Green Bay Packers would take me as the 88th pick, but they took someone else. The next pick was the 49ers and I never thought I would be picked by them, but I was ecstatic about it. Being drafted by the 49ers and playing with the best receiver in the game at that time, Jerry Rice, could only help me.

So I was excited about the opportunity, but really didn’t know what I was getting myself into.

You’ve had a lot of success in your career. You

You had a game-winning catch against the Green Bay Packers in 1998 in the wild card playoff. That reception has been called “The Catch II”. Tell us what it felt like when you caught that ball. Did you realize you were making history at the time?

At that moment I really didn’t. This was my first real playoff game where I was going to have an impact. I was playing alongside Jerry Rice, J.J. Stokes and Steve Young and put a lot of pressure on myself. For me, it was me just persevering through a rough day. I had dropped a couple of passes here and there and was overthinking things. I had to recollect and regroup

to stay focused on playing my game. The coach knew I had dropped some passes, but he and my teammates kept my spirits up.

Fortunately for me, an opportunity came about late in the 4th quarter with about 0:10 seconds left on the clock to redeem myself. Steve Young gave me an opportunity even though I had dropped a lot of passes. He didn’t give up on me and I was able to make a catch that has made history. That was one of the defining moments in my career and I’m fortunate that it will remain a part of 49ers history forever.

You’re 2nd all-time (behind only Jerry Rice) in receiving yards, a 6-time Pro Bowler, and member of the Team of the Decade. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

To be honest, I really don’t know. For me, just being a kid and not really having an idea or direction of where I was going and making it to the NFL is an accomplishment. Now, I can share my story with kids across America who don’t have the foresight to see what they could become if they put in the hard work. There are a lot of kids who have natural, God-given ability that, if they put in the hard work, could become something special. I’m a testament to that

because I never thought I would be able to do what I was able to do on the football field.

I was a scrawny kid from a small town that really just worked hard. Being on the sidelines in high school, I would watch the other kids make the big plays. I would also look in the crowd and see the excitement those guys were making.

As a junior and freshman in high school, I was never in that position to put the crowd to their feet. It wasn’t until my senior year that I was finally able to do that.

If you just keep working hard, when the opportunity comes you will be ready for it. That’s what I want to give back to kids who have that doubt. I feel that doubt more than failure will kill dreams. If a kid can be inspired and motivated then I’m happy to get that message out. I am living proof that hard work pays off and you can make it. When I left high school I wasn’t considered a top 100 football player.

When I left the NFL I was considered a top 100 wide receiver, which is a great testimony.

It’s not where you come from it’s how you apply yourself and how much hard work you put into yourself.

What was it like playing in the Super Bowl?

Do nerves play a factor? Or does the excitement of the crowd help fuel and inspire you as a player?

The first time I played in the Super Bowl I was dealing with such a severe injury that the doctors didn’t clear me to play. My confidence in what I had accomplished leading up to that game helped fuel and prepare me for that big day. For me, that was the ultimate game. I didn’t let the magnitude of that game distract or take away from my abilities to go out there and shine like I know I could have. Had I been 100%, who knows what the outcome would

have been? That being said, I played as well as I could have played considering the injury.

I’m a person of extreme confidence, but I think a lot of people mistake that with arrogance.

In order to be successful, you have to have confidence in yourself otherwise you will have people trying to take that away from you. You have to be strong-minded and strong-willed to do whatever it takes to help your team to victory. So I did whatever I could to accomplish that goal. Unfortunately we came up short by 3 points, but I feel like I did what I could.

You’re going to go down in history as a player who revolutionized touchdown celebrations. Do you have a favourite?

It’s hard to pinpoint one. One that comes to mind was against Green Bay, which was a fun one for me. We played at home and it was raining. I caught the ball and dragged a guy into the end zone to get the touchdown. I ran to the Green Bay cheerleaders, grabbed the pompoms and started dancing and cheering. But there are many celebrations that I enjoyed.

I mean, signing the football with a sharpie was fun and creative, but also created a big stir.

I was just trying to have fun with the game.

Some people looked at me saying that I was disgracing the game and had no respect for the game. Those people really don’t know me as a person. I always wanted to have fun and entertain the fans, but I always respected the game and never had intent to disgrace the game itself.

Do you feel that Tony Romo gets a bad rap from Cowboys fans?

Throughout Tony’s career and my career we could have done some things differently. That’s part of life and growing up. For me, I know I didn’t do everything right and say all the right things. Given the opportunity to go back, I’m sure I could have said and done things differently. But mistakes are what make us human and help to define us. I have no regrets because it’s all part of life – you live and learn and try to make better decisions moving forward. Nobody lives a perfect life.

Who would you say is the greatest quarterback you played with in the NFL? They are all great in their own right. There are some that I felt there was more chemistry with than others. If you talk about production with the quarterbacks I played with you would have to base it on each individual. But I was successful with every quarterback I played with. Notably, I played with Steve Young for a while and he is probably the best of all of them. But I never really had the chance to play with him throughout my career. Steve Young is a hall of famer and definitely one of the best quarterbacks that I played with, but all of the quarterbacks I played with were great.

You played in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Dallas, Cincinnati and Buffalo. Where did you enjoy playing the most and why?

I had fun and a great time playing with all of the teams that I played for, but I really enjoyed Philly. Even though it didn’t end well there I loved playing there. I was probably on pace to do some damage in terms of statistics. In Philly, I played in 21 games there and had 20 touchdowns, we went to the Super Bowl in my first year there and I was a big part of what catapulted them over the hump from NFC finalists to champions. Some of my teammates, notably Brian Dawkins, are quoted as saying that I brought the swagger to the team that they didn’t have.

You’re currently filming The Celebrity Apprentice. Obviously you can’t tell us what’s happening, but have you enjoyed the experience so far? What are your impressions of Donald Trump?

It was a good time and a great experience for me. Just to be exposed to different personalities and business mindsets was great. I learned a lot from everyone, including Donald Trump, about being successful in business – especially that it takes a group effort to succeed in business.

The group is extremely eclectic in terms of personalities and it was a phenomenal experience.

I came out of there with an understanding that in order to be successful you can’t assume you know everything. In order to make a business successful you have to be willing to trust your teammates – whether you are delegating to them or they to you.

Moving forward in business, I learned that I don’t know everything and it helped put a lot of things in perspective for me. When I left I wanted to be more intuitive and business savvy. I’m looking forward to being involved in more businesses in the future and using what I learned on Celebrity Apprentice to make it the success.

Off the field you have been involved with several philanthropic causes including establishing your own foundation. You are also working with the Alzheimer’s Association, even going as far to testify in front of Congress to increase research funding for the disease. Why is finding a cure for Alzheimer’s such an importance cause for you personally?

My grandmother passed away 2 years ago from Alzheimer’s Disease. There are different stages of Alzheimer’s and for my grandmother it started out with dementia. I never knew anything about the stages of Alzheimer’s at all, but once she was diagnosed with dementia I wanted to learn more. The progression of the disease was one of the hardest things I had to go through.

Seeing her mental health deteriorate year-byyear in front of the family was very difficult.

As the disease progressed, it felt like she was physically there but not mentally.

My grandmother was diagnosed the first year I was in the NFL in 1996. Throughout my career she never really had a grasp of what I was doing, what I had accomplished and what I was becoming.

It was tough, but I used her as inspiration and motivation to be the best I could be on the football field. Just being involved with the Alzheimer’s Association wherever I played was very special to me. I took on that responsibility wholeheartedly everywhere I went.

Alzheimer’s Disease is actually tougher on the family than it is on the person suffering. It’s a tough and agonizing disease that takes the life out of the caregivers.

For me, the Alzheimer’s Association will always be a group that I lend my time and heart to whenever needed.

I’m always in constant contact with the Association through social media. I also work with other personalities like Leeza Gibbons, Maria Schriver and Wayne Brady who have had Alzheimer’s impact their lives. If we can lend our celebrity status to increase awareness of the disease then hopefully it will lead to increased funding.

You wrote a book titled, “Little T Learns to Share”. What made you decide to write a children’s book?

It was one of those things where I wanted to give back to children. I worked with a friend who brought the idea to me to reach out to children. Kids’ books are about fun and illustrations, but I also want to promote literacy and teach lessons. The book was a way to accomplish this goal. Initially, we had toyed with the idea of creating a whole series (“Little T Learns to Say Thank You”, “Little T Learns to Say I’m Sorry”, etc.), but that hasn’t materialized yet. Teaching children to read is important, but teaching life lessons is another way to help them learn proper manners.

Being a father, what have your kids taught you?

Patience. They also taught me how to be a father because my father was never around growing up. I only had a handful of moments with my father when I was growing up and I never really knew who he was for some time. Being a presence

in the lives of my children – just playing with them and being around them – is important because those moments go a long way. I can only imagine what my life could have been like had I shared those moments with my father growing up.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Who are some of your favourite artists?

I listen to a little bit of everything – from country to R&B, hip-hop, techno, etc.

Some artists I like are Biggie, Nas, Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Rick Ross, Beyoncé, LeAnn Rimes, Zac Brown Band, Miranda Lambert, Rihanna, Chris Brown, etc. If it sounds good I will listen to it, especially with country music songs because there is a message behind it – it’s so meaningful. Not that all music isn’t, but country is often inspired by personal experiences that you can really feel.

You recently got into modelling. What’s it like being involved in modelling?

I haven’t really done anything major in the modelling world, although I would like to. But it is a cool experience. I’ve been trying to get more involved in modelling, commercial, and editorial stuff depending on the project. I try to keep myself in the best shape possible and I don’t really look my age, so I’m hoping to get involved in the industry whenever a project interests me.

For example, I started a clothing line of women’s and men’s t-shirts to promote healthy living. The women’s tees will be available online soon, but the campaign is called ‘WhatTOdo’. Some of the proceeds from the shirts are going to charity. I use my life experiences – physical fitness, success in football, etc.

Tell us a little bit about your fitness machine The Rack. Is this something you recommend just for athletes, or can anybody use this?

This is something anybody can use. It’s especially great for people who are aspiring athletes. Even if you just have the aspiration to maintain a healthy lifestyle then The Rack is an ideal fitness machine.

It’s about willpower, work ethic and, hard work. To make it more digestible, it’s about the 3 Ds – dedication, desire and diet – if you do those three things then you can do anything you want to do.

If you’re lost in the jungle and can take only 4 teammates from your career to help you survive or get to safety, who do you take and why?

Number 1 would be Jerry Rice because he’s got that will to win – he’s a competitor. I would say Roy Williams because I know that when times are tough you need a joke or someone to make light of the situation – he’s the man who can do that. Next I would say Chad Ochocinco because he is tech savvy. If there was any way to facilitate social media and reach out to the masses to get us help it would be Chad. Lastly, I would say Steve Young because he’s a good voice of reason.

You’re coming to Ottawa on June 13th for the 3rd Annual Casino Royale.

What’s your favourite casino game to play?

Ray Bourque Even if you aren’t a Colorado fan you probably cheered for Ray Bourque when the Avalanche won the cup in 2001. At the very least, you were happy that Ray Bourque had finally got his hands on the Stanley Cup after 1,825 games.

We caught up with Ray Bourque at the The WSP Sens Alumni & NHL Celebrity Cup charity tournament, which took place on March 28th at the Bell Sensplex.

What are your favourite moments from playing in the NHL? There’s not one moment, but a bunch of great memories. Making the NHL and playing my first game in 1979 was a special moment. I still remember, it was October 10th against the Winnipeg Jets. Looking back at the trips to the finals with the Bruins was special.

Stanley Cup Champion and NHL Hall-of-Famer

Esposito’s jersey was a big thrill. The closing of Boston Garden arena when all the great Bruins came back and skated on the ice was special. Normand Léveillé, a player who had a promising career cut short due to a brain aneurysm, returned to the ice when we did the closing skate at the Gardens – that was a really special moment. Canada Cups in ‘81, ‘84 and ‘87 especially, that was the best hockey I ever played in. The 3-game series against the Russians where all games were 6-5 and we won the last 2. Seeing Mario and Gretzky push themselves was incredible. Obviously winning the Cup in 2001 with the Avalanche was great. There are so many great memories and I just couldn’t pull out one.

Who was one of your favourite players to play with?

Cam Neely and Adam Oates are two guys that are just great players and hall of famers. Rick Middleton should be in the Hall of Fame – an incredible player. In Colorado, I played with Patrick Roy, Peter Forsberg, and Joe Sakic, who are all great players. Man, I played with so

many great guys it’s tough to pick just one. Brad Park is a guy who really took me under his wing as a rookie and taught me a lot about the game.

Not to mention playing alongside guys like Terry O’Reilly, who in my eyes is the ultimate Bruin – the hardest working and toughest guy I ever played with. I was lucky enough to come in my first year and have guys like Gerry Cheevers, Jean Ratelle, Wayne Cashman as mentors and players to learn from. Growing up and watching these players and then having the chance to play with them is pretty neat.

Which player did you hate playing against?

Tough guys like Pat Verbeek and Kevin Dineen, who played for the Hartford Whalers. We saw them about 10 times a year, were tough guys.

Whenever we went up against the top line or gritty lines of other teams it was a good challenge. Verbeek and Dineen were the biggest

challenges because you knew you were in for a battle that night. A lot of top lines are finesse, but those are a bit easier to play a physical game against. The other guys who keep coming, regardless of how physical you are, are challenging.

with respect to training. The guys are bigger and faster – it’s not to say they weren’t faster back then, but overall more guys are probably up and down the line a little quicker now. The game is still the game and it’s the greatest game.

How do you feel that the game has evolved since you played?

I think the game always does. As hockey goes on, everything evolves and gets a little better. I think the rules in the last 10 years have changed the game in some ways. It would have been fun to play without a red line or without the clutching and grabbing – not that I wasn’t doing any of that as an offensive guy who likes to jump into play. A lot of times you were hooked, grabbed or held, but having that freedom to allow you to move without the puck back then was tough to do. I think everything evolves even

What do you like best about Ottawa?

I remember staying here when we played and just walking around was great. It’s a beautiful city, especially in the winter with the Rideau Canal. The city has a great atmosphere especially when it comes to playing hockey. @RayBourque77

MIKAËL KINGSBURY So what’s life like for one of the best freestyle skiers on the planet? Faces Magazine recently caught up with Olympic silver medallist and reigning FIS World Cup title holder Mikaël Kingsbury to find out.

Mikaël, you made your FIS World Cup debut in 2010, at just 17 years of age. In five seasons on the World Cup circuit, you’ve earned 39 podium finishes, including 21 wins and 3 overall titles.

What has been the key to your remarkable success so far?

I’ve always had a big passion for my sport. I’m still having a lot of fun with what I’m doing. I’ve always wanted to be the best and to be the best you need to work harder than everyone else. I’ve worked hard and yeah, I think that’s pretty much it.

This past season, you earned your 21st career World Cup win, which moved you past the legendary Jean-Luc Brassard for the most wins by a Canadian. How did it feel to surpass someone you idolized growing up?

It’s crazy. Jean-Luc is a legend and I remember going to watch him compete in World Cup events when I was very young. He was an idol for me. It was like seeing Gretzky or Crosby in hockey, but skiing for me was the same. Jean-Luc has always been a great role model for me.

When I was competing I wasn’t thinking about the record. I knew I was close. I knew that I had tied it in Japan, but I wasn’t thinking about it. Even when I won, it wasn’t until my coach told me I’d become the winningest Canadian in World Cup history, that I realized it. Jean-Luc is still a big role model for me, but I think for me the best is still to come. I’ll continue to work hard. I love the records and I want to continue to write new ones and push my record so it will be very hard to beat.

Canada’s freestyle skiers had tremendous success at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, winning a total of 9 medals in all disciplines.

You earned a silver medal in the men’s moguls event, finishing just behind fellow Canadian Alex Bilodeau. Describe for us what your first Olympic experience was like as a member of Team Canada.

It was an amazing experience! Being at my first Olympics was the realization of a lifelong dream.

When I was very young, my plan to go to the 2014 Olympics was a longshot. But I had a lot of success on the World Cup circuit and I started thinking that going to the 2014 Olympics was possible and that it might even be possible to win a medal.

Just making it to Sochi was a big accomplishment for me and when I got there I was just focused on skiing well. I ended up skiing very well in training.

Besides winning an Olympic silver medal, what were some of the other highlights of your time in Sochi?

I had a lot of fun with my teammates. We were lucky, because our event was on the third day and we decided to stay for the whole Olympics. We had a lot of parties and a lot of fun celebrating. Our entire team had done very well; not just in moguls.

We basically saw every men’s hockey game for Team Canada, except the final. We were also there to watch the women when they won the gold medal game against the U.S. Another big highlight came after the guys won gold in hockey. We went to a party with the team, so that was pretty fun. We are all big hockey fans and being able to chat with the players all night was very fun.

Awesome! It sounds like a pretty incredible experience overall.

Oh yeah, it was crazy!

You’ve achieved some remarkable results over the past few years, including winning the 2013 World Championship title in men’s moguls, but for many Canadians, watching you compete and succeed at the Olympics was a real eye-opener.

These days, you’re a household name across the country. How has life changed for you since winning a medal in Sochi?

I haven’t changed. I’m still Mikaël Kingsbury, the same guy that was 17 and arriving on the World Cup tour. I’m still enjoying every moment. Sure, life has changed because I’m a bit better known.

Now I have a park in my town (Deux-Montagnes, QC) named after me, so that’s pretty crazy. And yesterday was my first time going shopping and I got recognized at least 15 times, so for sure life has changed a lot like that. But I’m never going to change; I’m still going to be the same guy anyway.

You mentioned shopping. What are some other things you enjoy doing when you aren’t busy training and competing?

I like skateboarding. I did a lot of skateboarding when I was pretty young, but I had to stop when I joined the national (freestyle skiing) team. I started again last summer. It’s so much fun. In skiing it’s harder to learn new stuff because we’re at a very high level, but in skateboarding I can learn so much stuff, so I have a lot of fun. I also

like to see my friends and family because I’m not home a lot. I like to travel. I also love sports; any kind of sports. So, that’s what I like to do outside of skiing.

Recently, you and several of your Olympic teammates made an appearance on Dragon’s Den. The episode won’t be airing on the CBC until next fall, but in the meantime, is there anything you can share with us about the experience of facing the dragons?

It was a good experience, but it was intimidating.

I’ve done a lot of big TV shows since coming back (from Sochi), but Dragon’s Den is something else.

We had to sell something or, in this case, ourselves to earn money and new sponsors. We could not make mistakes with what we were saying. It was a fun experience. We did very well. I think the dragons were pretty happy. I cannot tell you what happened, because it’s in our contract, but I can just say that it went super well and we’re very happy about what we’ve done. Getting there was a longshot; we didn’t know if it was going to work, but we decided to try anyway. Like I said, it was pretty scary to go there but we did super well and I’m excited to see the show.

The Canadian Olympic Team will be coming to Ottawa in early June as part of the 2014 Celebration of Excellence. This event will bring all the athletes and coaches together as a group for the first time since the Sochi Olympics. What are you looking forward to most about connecting with your Olympic teammates once again?

I’m very excited to go to participate in the Celebration of Excellence. I saw a couple of videos of the events that were held after the Vancouver and London Olympics and they looked crazy. We’ll go to Ottawa and then Edmonton and Calgary, so it’s going to be nice to see everyone. We’re all in different sports and we don’t compete in the same place, so we don’t see each other often. It’s going to be great to see everyone and hang out. We’re going to celebrate a lot there. People are excited to go there. I think we’re going to have a fun time. I’ve never been in a big parade like that, so I’m excited to see it.

In competition the conditions changed a lot. The weather was very warm, so it was more difficult on the day of the race. The course was very soft, but I managed to pull off very consistent runs and ended up with the silver medal. I was very happy with that. I did everything I could to try and win, but I made some little mistakes that cost me the gold medal. I’m very, very happy with what I’ve done and I’ll be better for 2018.

Ottawa Fury Defender When you meet Kenny Caceros you’re struck by how laid back the guy really is. He speaks with a calm, assured voice about the game he loves, the team he’s devoted to and the career he’s enjoyed. The 6’0” tall Ottawa native has been shuffled from center-mid to center-back by Ottawa Fury FC management – a challenge and opportunity Caceros welcomes. In his own words, “To get paid to play the sport you love is amazing and I have no complaints about anything. I’m just having a good time.”

When did you first start playing soccer?

I think I started playing when I was about 5 or 6 years old, but I was kicking balls almost as soon as I could walk. I started getting into soccer at an early age and haven’t stopped since.

Who are some of your soccer idols?

At the moment, my favourite player is Xavi Hernandez – he’s the captain of Barcelona and Spain. Growing up I liked all the big names like Pelé and Maradona; how could you not love those players? I also like the way Michael Essien plays.

You have traditionally played midfield, but you are currently playing defence for Ottawa Fury FC. How do you enjoy playing back?

I always played midfield, center-mid in particular, but the team is stocked with that position right now. But the coach, Marc Dos Santos, saw the potential in me as a center-back. The coach and staff feel I have the size and ability to play back and want to transition me there. It’s a different way of reading the game and you can’t make a mistake. You really have to be sure in the position. I also need to work on being more physical and aggressive, which has always been my weak point. It’s going to take some time and practice, but I’m excited for the opportunity.

Kenny Caceros What are your thoughts on a relegation process from Europe being incorporated in North American soccer? For example, the top 1 or 2 North American Soccer League (NASL) teams promoted to Major League Soccer (MLS) and the bottom 1 or 2 MLS teams being relegated to the NASL? It would be great if there was a system like that, but it’s tough to do. The MLS teams have so many rules and regulations to become a team – finance, support, etc. With TD Place at Landsdowne coming, it’s going to be an amazing opportunity for Ottawa Fury FC to play and grow. We just need some time to get the club to grow. Once that happens I think MLS could be very possible.

Tell us a little bit about the fan support for Ottawa Fury FC. For your home opener you had over 3,400 fans attend.

The fan support is great. The supporter groups, like the Bytown Boys, Fury Ultras and Stony Monday Riot, also bring fun and an amazing atmosphere to the games. Even in our pre-season games in Gatineau that could only hold about 100 fans had great fan support with scarves and drums while singing songs. It adds an extra level of fun to the fans and players.

For the home opener, the stands were packed.

Everything along the fence was full of people too. It was great that we were able to max out the Carleton University venue. When we get to TD Place at Landsdowne we’ll have more space and hopefully even more people.

in terms of decision-making. In university you can get away with making some mistakes, but at this level you can’t do that because the players are too good.

You grew up in Ottawa. What does it mean to play in your home town?

My family is originally from Guatemala. I was born in California, but moved to Ottawa when I was 5. I may have my American papers, but I am 100% an Ottawa boy. It means so much to be able to play at home especially in front of friends in family who have always supported me.

What are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the Ottawa Fury FC going into the inaugural season?

Our biggest weakness is just how new of a group we are. We are still learning to play with each other as a group, but that is easy to overcome with time. The more we train and play together, the better we will get as a group. Our biggest strength is that everyone is technically solid and has played at a high level. The team talent level is through the roof and the team will only get better over time.

We got to live and train together when training in Florida, which was a great bonding and training experience. The weather was perfect and the facilities were amazing. Knowing each other off the field also helps us bond together on the field. @kennyca13

Wayne Brady

Well-known for his charming and witty brand of comedy, Wayne Brady certainly has an impressive resume. He’s worked on some of the most popular shows on TV, including How I Met Your Mother and Whose Line is it Anyway? he’s worked with today’s biggest celebrities, including Tina Fey and Neil Patrick Harris; and he’s won 2 Daytime Emmy Awards and 1 Primetime Emmy Award for The Wayne Brady Show, in addition to many more awards and nominations. We recently spoke with Wayne Brady before his stop in Ottawa for his “It’s My Line” tour to discuss his road to success.

What’s the first joke you can remember telling?

Well I really don’t tell jokes because I’m not stand-up. I’ve never really been one to repeat jokes, so I don’t really have an answer.

What was your childhood like, being raised by your grandmother? What are some of the most important lessons you learned from her?

Conduct yourself with class. You need to be respectful of other people. Always watch the cook and make sure that you know what’s going in your food. Try to treat women well.

As a teenager, you almost joined the military. What changed your mind?

I was thinking about it, but I think they make too big a deal of that online. I was 15 or 16 and who really knows what they want to do at that age. My father was in the military, so I thought that’s what I might do, but then I started acting at 16.

Did you pursue acting because you enjoyed it, or is it something you fell into and then came to love?

I mean, obviously I liked it because it became my life’s profession. As soon as I started I knew that’s what I was going to do. When I was 16, I did a school play, went and

auditioned for a professional company and got a role in a play called “A Raisin in the Sun”. That was my first job and I just kept working after that.

How did you first get started on Whose Line Is It Anyway?

There was an audition. I went in with a couple guys from my improv and sktech comedu group. I went on my lunch break and I wasn’t really expecting to do the show. I had seen the show before and I liked it but I didn’t see myself getting the gig. I auditioned for the experience and to hang out with my buddies. It turned out really well for me because I got hired for the British version. Once the U.S. version started, I was one of the people asked to do a guest spot. Fom my very first guest spot I just kept getting back in until they invited me to be a regular on the show. It was completely unexpected and not something that I saw coming down the pipe. But that’s the great thing about life and show business.

You make plans and other things happen that go completely against those plans. Things end up being better than the plans you originally had.

You’ve won two Daytime Emmy Awards for hosting The Wayne Brady Show and won one Primetime Emmy Award for your performance on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, in addition to plenty of other nominations. Why do you think you’ve been so successful?

I think I’m great at what I do. It’s a pretty straightforward thing. I would like to hope that I am good at the craft and I have a good time doing it.

How has it been to return to Whose Line? What is it like working with Canadians Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles?

It’s great. We’re in our second season now. It’s like we just walked back in after a quick lunch break and went right back to work. No time was lost to be able to work with Ryan and Colin has been amazing. We’ve had so much fun.

Aisha Tyler is doing a great job as host and she makes me laugh. It’s been really good.

You’ve written songs, done improv on Whose Line is it Anyway?, theatre, shows like How I Met Your Mother, game show hosting, hosted The Wayne Brady Show, and right now, a comedy tour. What one have you enjoyed the most so far?

It all depends on the project. Whatever I’m doing at the time, I try to enjoy that and take that experience away.

Each experience is great for its own reasons. I had an amazing time on HIMYM because of the cast and because of the role. When they asked me to do How I Met Your Mother, I knew it would be recurring role and I really enjoyed it. But all the sitcoms I’ve done I’ve enjoyed. I’m still very open to see what the next roles are and maybe at that point I’ll have a favourite.

Who is the funniest person you’ve ever met?

Professionally, I couldn’t say because I’ve been blessed to work with so many talented people that I love, like Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ryan and Colin.

So I really can’t say… Tina Fey is absolutely amazing and so I have to say it’s definitely a tie between some highly esteemed people. And in terms of my personal life, my daughter makes me laugh.

What do you and your daughter do when you hang out together?

School and spend time together. There’s no “Super Hollywood School of Parenting” – it’s just spending great time with your kid. She loves music and reading and the same things that I do so we end up doing a lot of that together.

We read, watch our favourite shows, go to see plays and live music.

You’ll be in Ottawa soon for your “It’s my Line” tour.

What can people expect from this tour and what sets it apart from other shows?

You can expect improvisation. I’ve been to Ottawa before.

Me with a few of my friends, doing my own brand of improv. A lot of fast physical stuff, asking the audience, improvisational music, a lot of audience participation. From the time I hit the stage until the time I leave it’s all made up right off the top of my head. It’s like an improvised rock concert. It’s a different show every time.

Did you know when you first appeared on HIMYM as Barney Stinson’s brother, that it would be a recurring role?

When they asked me to do it, they said it would be recurring. Of course, I enjoyed it.

You’ve worked with Neil Patrick Harris not only on HIMYM, but also on the Hollywood Bowl Production of Rent, which he directed. What is it like working with him?

He’s a professional and he’s charming and he’s just a good, all around guy. He is a professional and so damn talented that it’s nothing but great.

You were recently named Xbox’s “Gamer of the Month” for April. What are your favourite games to play?

I’ve been playing Titanfall recently and I think that they really liked that I was playing their newest game. Dead Rising 3 is my favourite game on Xbox right now. Gaming is a great pass-time. I’ve been a gamer since I was a teenager. I have my Xbox One, PS4, Wii, PC stuff – gaming in general. I don’t have a lot of time, but when I do get the chance I definitely jump online to get a few games in.

Tell us about your involvement with Ronald McDonald Housing Charities. How did you first become involved and what makes you passionate about this charity in particular?

I know what Ronald McDonald Housing Charities does for the parents and families of kids that are being treated for illnesses, various ailments and I know that as a parent to be able to have support like that is absolutely incredible.

I don’t know what I would do if I was in the position that many of those families are in and that they don’t have certain resources. That’s where Ronald McDonald Housing Charities steps in. So if I can help in any way, shape, or form to help other parents, then that’s why I jump on board.

Comedy or music. Which would you give up, if you had to?

Why would I give up either? You’ve been given certain gifts and you like them all the same. There are Broadway stars and I’m a Broadway star myself. If you didn’t do one of those things, then you wouldn’t be the person that you are and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Then I wouldn’t be where I am, so why would I give either of them up? @waynebrady

E d wa r d J a m e s Olmos Golden Globe-winning and Academy Award-nominated Actor, Director and Musician

From Miami Vice, to Battlestar Galactica and Dexter, Edward James Olmos certainly has a dedicated fan base. Perhaps more impressive than the plethora of roles he’s taken on, however, is how dedicated he is to making positive changes and impacting the lives of others. We spoke with Edward James Olmos on his life experiences, acting, and his take on Hollywood.

You’ve worked very hard to get to where you are today. What influences would you say your parents and family have had on your success or outlook on life?

I would say total. They were the first influences that I had and set me on the journey that I’m on. You are what you eat, you are what you think and you are what you do, so I mean, people who have the most influence on you are the people who really touch your lives in a very strong way at the very conception of your birth.

My parents, my grandparents, and my great grandparents were great role models.

You’ve remarked that your first love was baseball – what is it about baseball that you love so much and who do you cheer for?

Yes. I love it. When I was a kid, I played it every day, seven days a week. I don’t really have a favourite team. I just like the game. It’s the intensity in which it has to be played. It’s only 13 minutes of actual play time in a three and a half hour game. Some people get very, very, very bored with it because it’s not fast enough for them. But when you know the precision of what we’re talking about, you really start to realize, “Wow, it’s really very hard. It’s a very difficult game. It’s very difficult to get the ball going 105 to 160 miles an hour. Especially the accuracy, to hit it where it has to go.”

What made you change gears, from playing baseball, to go into the arts instead?

My father taught me how to dance when I was about 10 years old and I was listening to rock ‘n’ roll music all the time because of that. It was something I found to be exciting. Sure enough, when I was 14, I told my dad I wanted to be a singer. I had never sung before. What I really appreciated about singing was performing. So I got to the point of wanting to perform and singing was the best way to do that. So I ended up becoming a rock ‘n’ roll singer.

Originally when you got into acting, what was your first gig? How did you come across it?

It was a film that we did for UCLA, a student short film. That was the first piece that I did on film. And then it was very hard to find work on film. I was doing theatre for a while. I started doing theatre at 17 when I was in my first year at college. I was doing it so I could augment my performances on stage while I was singing.

And then I found myself really appreciating storytelling abilities of the theatre as well as the music side, so I started to play music for the plays and ended up at the actor’s studio, doing some work with some really avant-garde playwrights. It was a lot of fun.

In college, you played piano and sung in a band – Eddie James and the Pacific Ocean.

Do you still play music now?

I had the band for a lot of years. And yes, I still play music. I play with my children. They all play. They are more talented – much more talented than I am. Much better musicians.

You’ll be coming to Ottawa soon for Comiccon, where you’ll undoubtedly meet quite a lot of devoted Battlestar Galactica Fans.

What do you think made Battlestar Galactica such a success?

The story. The story is what made this project really grow and become what it is today. It’s a piece of work that has actually crossed into that space where other pieces of art cross into -- one that speaks directly to the situations of humanity in a way that will last the test of time. One of the key themes in the whole series is that everything that’s been done before is going to happen again. A hundred years today they’ll be looking at this program. People will be asking why we, as society, keep doing the same things and expecting different results.

Before Battlestar Galactica, you had done very little in science fiction. What was it specifically about William Adama’s character in Battlestar Galactica that drew you to the role?

The story was monumental. It was coming out about 13 months after 9/11, so our emotions and feelings were weakened to this new and changing sense of reality. So it was the story more than the character that was compelling.

The character came to life because of the situation and the story.

You’ve done plenty of films which showcase Latino talent and tell passionate stories about the Latino culture, such as American Me, Zoot Suits, and Stand and Deliver, for which you’ve received plenty of critical acclaim. What made you decide to take on these roles instead of taking offers for larger blockbuster films?

I think the reason I’ve done it is because nobody else was going to get involved with doing it.

Our art form has a tendency to become the entertainment business, not entertainment for social awareness. A lot of us turn to art to try to understand ourselves better, but instead, the main issue is that art ends up being made to entertain and make money. All my films have still made money, thank the Lord, and it’s been quite an experience to say the least.

What particular role did you personally identify with the most that you’ve played, either on the big screen or small screen?

I think that almost everything I’ve done I’ve been able to identify with. It has been very amazing. I’ve been very fortunate and I’ve lived a very privileged life to understand myself better through the roles that I portray, such as in Zoot Suits and Stand and Deliver.

How did you enjoy participating in the Dexter series? What was it like being on the set?

That was a really interesting turn of events.

I would not have done that piece had it not been for the fact that the character was dead, Deborah was alive, and Deborah was there.

Everything you saw my character doing, I didn’t do - my character didn’t do, because he was created in the mind of someone else. It’s the only reason I did it, to be honest with you. I could not have done what Lithgow did two seasons before – playing a preacher and a good guy who was actually that maniacal, killing people... That show was very disturbing. A lot of people loved the series.

You’ve offered your support to a broad range of social issues. What social issues are of most concern to you right now? What are you working on?

Right now I’m working on a piece that is just extraordinary. It has to do with what was known, what was found out, and what was done with the information in the United States of America on the Holocaust. It’s a dramatic fiction. It’s very difficult to do. Very sad, very tragic. It’s a very difficult story to watch. Very difficult. Once you see it, you will be very grateful that you saw it, but you won’t like what you understand about life. I don’t know when it will be out. It will be out whenever we can find the money.

What accomplishment or success are you most proud of to date?

My children. My family. They are everything to me.

MAJIC Morning Show Host

Stuntman Stu How did you get the name “Stuntman Stu”?

When I started in radio back in 1996, the morning show I was on (106.9 The Bear) said I needed a catchy nickname. They threw around a bunch of names like Super Stu, Stunted Stu and eventually Stuntman Stu. I remember saying that I thought it was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. Now it pays the mortgage!

How did you get your big break in radio broadcasting?

I was at Algonquin College taking radio broadcasting and had to interview a local celebrity, so I chose the morning show at The Bear. After the interview, I called the morning host “Doc” (now at CHEZ) and asked if he needed any interns or help on the show. Much to my surprise, he called me back and said to come in. I still remember driving down Baseline and hearing the message on my voicemail (back before holding a phone while driving wasn’t illegal!).

As a kid, you were bullied by your peers at school. How did this experience shape your views on the issue? What do you think are the main causes of bullying?

It made me stronger. Those that criticize the MAJIC 100 #NoMoreBullies campaign, say that kids need to learn how to overcome adversity when they’re young. I don’t agree with that; it’s much tougher growing up today than it was for my generation and kids have enough to deal with. Today it’s 24 hour bullying whereas I could leave school on Friday and not have to deal with it until Monday morning. Bullying usually comes from someone who was picked on, then tries to be bigger than the other person. We hear it constantly from schools who request our presentation. I don’t know if we’ll ever stop the problem entirely, but we can help educate kids of the repercussions and teach them how to be more responsible.

The campaign started as a Twitter rant that I did one day after we talked about the issue on the MAJIC 100 Morning Show. Angie, Trisha (from the show), and myself head out to local

schools with a fantastic team that delivers a 50 minute presentation and we hope that by the end of it, kids will pick up on a few of the examples that we’ve demonstrated. It’s an emotional presentation and we’ve received great feedback from parents, teachers, and most importantly the students.

What was your favourite part about being a sports announcer for hockey at both the Vancouver and the Sochi Winter Olympics?

Do you have any favourite moments?

My favourite moment in Vancouver was being able to see Canada beat the U.S. in person and celebrating after in the streets. It was the icing on the cake to an amazing few weeks for our country and the pride of wearing the Maple Leaf was unreal. Sochi was completely different. Being a world away was an adjustment and took some time getting used to the Russian culture, language, and way of life. It was an experience I’ll never forget and watching the athletes taking in the sights just like all the spectators was very cool. They love every moment and are like tourists walking around the Olympic park with everyone else.

You’ve had the opportunity to meet plenty of celebrities and interesting people; who has left the greatest impression on you?

Working at MAJIC 100 has given me access to meet Ellen, Oprah, and many others but meeting Chris Hadfield was very memorable. He took us on his journey through space and just being able to have him on our show when he was in town was a big highlight. He has a very interesting view on life and while we only had him for 10 minutes on the show, we could’ve talked to him for hours.

You’re a Montreal native, but an Ottawa Sens fan. Now that the Sens are out of the playoffs, will you be cheering for Montreal?

The Habs were my team growing up and when I moved to Ottawa 20 years ago, I adopted the Sens as my second team. I’ve been lucky enough to be the PA announcer for the last 8 years so

naturally I always want the Sens to do well. It would be nice to see the Cup come north of the border and if the Habs are lucky enough, then I would be happy for them.

You’ve been very successful so far in your career, and probably have had plenty of chances to move to other cities for different jobs. What is it about Ottawa that has made you stay here and call it home?

I was actually offered the job to replace Leno, but turned it down and now Jimmy Fallon hosts the show. Ottawa is a great city to raise a family and while offers have been tempting, my wife is from here and really enjoys being close to her family. That’s a win for me too; my Italian mother-in-law is a great cook!

You’re a busy family man, always on the go with work, and make plenty of appearances in support of local causes. How do you balance all of these? Do you manage to get any time for yourself?

Everyone has to balance work and family life.

What works for our family might not work for someone else. I really enjoy the simple things in life, just driving along the canal or going up to the Calabogie race track and tearing it up in a fast car is something I really enjoy. It helps take my mind off everything and I can really relax, which might sound weird when you’re going 180km/h. I also play pickup hockey once a week and enjoy just hanging out with the guys. I’m much slower there!

You consistently seem to be cheerful and happy both on the airwaves and off. How do you manage to have such a positive attitude?

I’ve been lucky enough to live out my dream of doing what I always wanted to do. The job is great and while the hours can be a little demanding at times, I get paid to talk for a living.

Trisha Owens What made you want to move from CTV Kitchener to do the Majic Morning news here in Ottawa?

I actually moved from CTV Kitchener to Ottawa for love! That may sound a bit cheesy but it is the truth. I met my husband while I was working in Kitchener and he was working here in Ottawa. I had lived in the Capital back in 2003 and when it came time to decide who was going to move, I didn’t hesitate to come back. I am thrilled to be here in Ottawa working alongside Stu and Angie as part of the Majic Morning Show.

We hear you like Bon Jovi. What Bon Jovi song best describes you/your life?

I have always been a huge fan of Bon Jovi. Not sure I could pick a song that describes my life, but I will admit I adore the song “Thank you for Loving Me.” I tried to convince my husband Matt to have that as our wedding song but sadly he doesn’t share my passion for Bon Jovi!

What is it like working with Stu and Angie?

Stu and Angie are amazing. We are like a little family in the Majic studio. We all get along so well, we share a mutual respect for one another, and we work hard behind the scenes to make the Majic Morning Show the best it can be each and every morning.

Stu told us to ask you what it’s like working with such a good-looking guy. What’s your response to that?

Wow! Need I say more? Haha! Stu is a very funny guy who I am convinced thinks Angie and I are harbouring these inner fantasies about him.

What is your favourite summer pass-time?

I enjoy jogging and walking my dog Bridget.

I also love just spending time on a patio with friends.

Where is your favourite outdoors place to be in Ottawa?

Hog’s Back Park is hands down my favourite

What is your favourite charity event that you’ve participated in? Why? I have had the pleasure of participating in so many wonderful events. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute Telethon is amazing. I love talking to the volunteers and hearing their stories. Years ago when I first began my career in television, I was the emcee for a “bachelor auction” to benefit the March of Dimes. It was a really unique event that was so much fun to be a part of and helped out a great cause all at the same time.

Have you always wanted to be a radio broadcaster or did you have different hopes as a kid?

As a kid, I actually used to pretend I was a school teacher! I was really shy growing up and never thought I would be in front of a television camera or a microphone. I would have to say my love for broadcasting developed during my last year of high school, when I really started to “come out of my shell.”

If you could interview anyone in Ottawa that you haven’t yet, who would it be and why?

I would love to sit down with the Prime Minister. I would really like to know what a Saturday afternoon with the Harpers is really like and what they do for fun. What happens if they just want to go out for pizza and wings?

Social media or cable TV: which would you give up if you had to?

Social media! There are so many shows I am addicted to that I wouldn’t be able to quit them cold turkey.

What was it like to be on stage in front of so many young Canadians at the Canadian Tire Centre for We Day this past month?

We Day is an absolutely awe-inspiring event. It was so incredible to be a part of an event that celebrates the thousands of young people who

are working hard day in and day out to make our world a better place. It really gives you hope for the future. The Majic Morning Show felt very honoured to be asked to participate in such an important national event!

What are your top goals for 2014, both personally and professionally?

Professionally, I would like to see the Majic Morning Show with Stu, Angie, and Trisha continue to grow and continue to attract new listeners who enjoy the show as much as we enjoy being a part of it. Personally, I would like to try some new activities here in the Capital.

Perhaps take some art courses or dance lessons.

You must be pretty busy – and waking up so early in the morning can’t be easy. How do you manage to maintain a regular schedule when you’re up well before 5am every day?

I would have to say there really is no regular schedule when the alarm goes off at 3:30 a.m.

I definitely need to nap during the day and try to squeeze in some exercise to keep my energy levels up. I’m in bed well before the kids in the neighbourhood call it a night, but I just make sure I make the most of my free time.

What’s your favourite after-work spot to go with friends when you want to unwind?

I have always loved Fat Tuesdays in the market.

The duelling pianos are incredible! If I’m looking for something a little more laid back and the weather is nice, then I will usually invite people over to my patio set in the backyard!

If you weren’t part of the Majic team, or working as a morning announcer, what would career could you see yourself in? Why? I love crime dramas and always thought it would be cool to be an undercover cop or detective. Watching Jennifer Garner in Alias made me want to be a spy for the longest time! All kidding aside though, I think teaching/mentoring is more up my alley. @TrishaOwens

Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 11th this year. Like many sons and daughters in our city, I was planning once again to buy my mom a nice card, flowers and maybe a box of chocolates.

I thought I was being a pretty good son for doing so.

Well, I better think again... because according to Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day, I may be the worst son on Earth: “A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”

Wow.. it doesn’t stop there.. what about chocolates.. every mom likes chocolates right?

“And candy! You take a box to Mother - and then eat most of them yourself. A petty sentiment!”

Looks like even Forest Gump would be in trouble with Ms. Jarvis.

In years that followed 1908, Jarvis campaigned to make “Mother’s Day” a national holiday. In 1914, she succeeded and it was nationally recognized in the U.S. A shrine was erected in West Virginia, known as the “International Mother’s Day Shrine” to commemorate her accomplishment.

However, in the 1920’s, her initial joy turned to disappointment. Mother’s Day, like all other holidays, was becoming commercialized. She and her sister spent their inheritance campaigning against what the holiday had become - even getting arrested once for disturbing the peace!

She never married and, in the end, never became a mother herself. However, through her efforts and determination to pay tribute to her mom, she will forever be remembered on the second Sunday each May. Anna Jarvis was tough and she was driven, but in the end she made paying tribute to our mothers a national event. For that, we all owe her a great deal of thanks.

The Street Hockey Tournament

World’s Largest Hockey Festival

For hockey fans across Canada, spring is a time when our National past-time becomes a National obsession. Our most elite athletes come together to compete for one of hockey’s greatest honours. And I’m not talking about the Stanley Cup. Over the next two months, in 20 cities across Canada, street hockey players of all ages and skill levels will be participating in Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! – Canada’s official street hockey tournament.

Play On!, now recognized as the world’s largest Street Hockey Tournament by Guinness Records, is entering its 11th season, and will host over 40,000 players this spring across divisions for all ages and skill levels. Here in Ottawa on June 7th and 8th, at our Canadian Tire Center, competitors and spectators will be witness to over 2,000 games, with the 1st and 2nd place teams in the Elite, Under 19, and Under 17 divisions being invited to compete in the Redwood Cup National Championships, hosted this year in Kingston, Ontario.

While Play On! is host to the most competitive street hockey in the nation, it’s goal reaches beyond deciding who is Canada’s greatest street hockey team. The program’s aim over the past 11 years has been to grow and nurture our National past-time beyond the drive-ways and cul-de-sacs in which it began. Play On! has focused its efforts on becoming more than a simple tournament, and has indeed earned the title of Canada’s Largest Sports Festival. By focusing on the festival aspects of these events, Play On! has created an environment – including live music, food vendors, contests, and celebrity games – to help people share street hockey not just as a sport, but as a culture.

So as our NHL heroes take to the ice, local and national heroes will take to the streets, to participate in a festival with a place for everyone. From the youngest up-and-comers, to future NHL heroes like Ottawa’s own Ryan Spooner, who called the tournament the “highlight of my summer”, Play On! is here to remind us that the end of winter does not signal the end of hockey. For many, it’s just the beginning.

Death is not an easy subject to raise with your loved ones but, if you are living in a common law relationship, you might want to consider having this important conversation with your partner sooner rather than later.

Many people choose to live with their partner without getting legally married. A large number of these individuals have not considered what would happen to their common-law spouse if they died, often assuming their partner would be protected. Understanding what rights commonlaw spouses have at law will allow you to take the steps necessary to protect each other before you are unable to do so.

In Ontario, a common law spouse does not have an automatic right to inherit any of the assets of their partner. In fact, common law spouses do not inherit any of their spouse’s property unless it is left to them in a will. If your common law spouse dies without leaving a will, the intestacy rules provide that their estate is distributed in the following order: • • • • • •

To any issue (children, grandchildren etc.); To parents; To siblings; To nieces and nephews; To remaining blood relatives, by degree of blood relationship; and To the Crown.

Common law spouses appear nowhere on the list and are excluded from sharing in their deceased partner’s estate.

If a common law spouse was financially dependent on the deceased prior to death, they may be able to make a claim for financial support, but to do so they would have to commence a court application and bring an action against the estate. These are often contentious and expensive actions not to mention very difficult to undertake during the grieving period.

So, what steps can you take to protect your common law spouse in the event of your death?

•

First and foremost, draft a Will, leaving clear instructions that you wish your partner to inherit the assets of your estate.

•

If you and your spouse own your home, ensure that the home is held in joint tenancy with right of survivorship. This will ensure that the home will pass to your common law spouse upon your death, with the registration of a survivorship application.

•

Open a joint bank account and the balance will also pass to your spouse automatically upon your death.

•

Review the beneficiary designations of your RRSPs, life insurance policies etc. If you designate your common law spouse as the beneficiary of these specific assets, the assets will pass directly to him or her upon your death and will not form part of your estate.

•

Ensure you have a current power of attorney. A power of attorney is a legal document that gives someone else the power to act on your behalf and can help protect a loved one during the period prior to death when you might be unable to manage your property.

Without a power of attorney, no one can sign legal documents or cheques for you. This means bills can be left unpaid, and your common law spouse may go indefinitely without the benefit of your financial support. Your assets will be inaccessible. If your partner is dependent on you and you do not have a current power of attorney, there’s nothing your partner can do if you are suddenly incapacitated except apply to the court to be appointed guardian of your property thus allowing them to manage your property on your behalf. This process takes time and costs money and the extra trouble can easily by avoided by executing a power of attorney while you still have the capacity to do so.

One final option to consider is entering into a Cohabitation Agreement with your partner. A Cohabitation Agreement can address ownership of assets and what will happen to them upon the breakdown of a relationship, even if the cause of the breakdown is due to the death of one of the parties.

It has been written that this tasty treat is called a hot dog simply because of its shape – resembling the dachshund breed of dog.

It is also said that the term was coined at a Giants baseball game in the early 1900’s in New York City. It was a cold day in April and a concessionaire named Harry Mozley Stevens was losing money trying to sell ice cream and sodas. Stevens asked his salesmen to buy as many dachshund sausages that they could find and an equal number of rolls. An hour later, his vendors were selling the dachshund sausages from portable hot water tanks yelling, “They’re red hot! Get your hot dachshund sausages while they’re red hot!”

In the press box, sports cartoonist T.A. Dorgan could hear the vendors. He hastily drew a cartoon of a frankfurter with a tail, legs and a head so that it looked like a dachshund. He wasn’t sure how to spell the word “dachshund” so he simply wrote “Hot Dog!” under the picture – the picture went to print in the New York Evening Journal – and the term “hot dog” was born.

WHY DO WE CALL A CUP OF COFFEE A CUP OF “JOE”?

“A cup of Joe”, as a reference to a cup of coffee, first appeared as popular slang in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Opinions differ on where this phrase originates from, but the most popular belief seems to be that the phrase is attributed to Admiral Josephus (Joe) Daniels.

Admiral Daniels was the U.S. Secretary of the Navy during World War I. After he outlawed alcohol on ships, coffee became the favourite beverage of naval crews… hence the phrase “cup of Joe”.

WHY DO WE SAY “BURY THE HATCHET”?

The term “Bury the Hatchet” derives from American Indian tradition. Hatchets were buried by the chiefs of tribes when they came to a peace agreement. It was a symbolic sign reflecting that they had settled their differences with an adversary.

WHY DO WE SAY THE PHRASE “I’LL TAKE A RAIN CHECK”?

Omega-3 It is said that the phrase was first founded in the 1880’s in reference to a baseball game. The practice of giving a rain check to a ticketholder was formalized in 1890 by what would become Major League Baseball – in other words, if it rained (something the ticket purchaser had no influence over) and the game was postponed, the ticket holder could come back for another game.

WHY DO PEOPLE SAY “BLESS YOU” AFTER SOMEONE SNEEZES? Many people have become accustomed to saying “Bless You” or “Gesundheit” when someone sneezes. However, we don’t say anything when someone coughs, blows their nose, etc. So why do sneezes get such special treatment?

It is said that the various sneeze sayings originated from ancient superstitions. It was written that some people believed that a sneeze caused the soul to escape the body through the nose.

Saying “bless you” would stop the devil from claiming the person’s freed soul. Others believe the opposite: that evil spirits use the sneeze as an opportunity to enter a person’s body. There was also the misconception that the heart momentarily stops during a sneeze (it does not) and that saying “bless you” was a way of welcoming a person back to life.

WHY DO WE SAY “QUIT COLD TURKEY”?

It has been written by some that the term arose because some addicts going through withdrawal are so pale and covered in goose bumps – that their skin looks like that of an uncooked turkey.

However, most think that this version is false.

“Cold Turkey” dates back to the early 20th Century – related to the term “Talk Turkey” – meaning to cut the comedy and just talk frankly.

When you “quit cold turkey”, you are dispensing the preliminaries and get right down to quitting.

Why turkey? It is suggested that turkeys, as standard U.S. game fowl, reflected the no-bull simplicity of frontier life.

5 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU HIT THE BEACH: It’s been a long hard winter here in Ottawa, but finally the city is filled with the excitement of summer time shine. Golf courses opening, pools being uncovered, beaches getting busy and many more fun outdoor activities are finally getting ready to take off.

For some, this time of year presents lots of excitement as all that hard work that’s been put in at the gym over the past few months is finally going to be unleashed. For others, a few months of making lame excuses, poor nutrition choices, and a lack of physical activity has you dreading bathing suit season.

Regardless of where you’re at, it’s never too late to make changes. Here are a few tips to help you achieve the summer body you deserve:

Come up with a plan specific to your summer goals. Whether you want to lose fat, increase muscle hypertrophy, tone up or run a marathon, always make sure you’re training with a plan and a purpose, otherwise you’re likely wasting your time.

2 Start taking selfies and posting them

Ya I said it... I’m not proud of it, but I actually encourage people to take selfies and post them.

I know, I know, it’s bad enough that we are forced to have our instagram feeds clouded with #iamhot #25Kselfie, not to mention that the current number one song on the radio is called “Selfie”, so what could possibly be the logic behind this statement?

4 For the women: Glutes, Glutes, GLUTES!!

Looking to finally fill out your bikini bottoms at Hope Beach Volleyball this year? Tired of your back end feeling like a wet bag of sand à la 40 year-old virgin? Learning how to properly use your glutes will change the way you look at your training program.

I have the pleasure of training lots of women and on day one I always say, “your glutes are everything!!!” Whether you’re doing an exercise that’s glute specific like a barbell glute bridge, or something as simple as a planks and push-ups, always be conscious of what your glutes are doing. Building a rock hard booty will help you to look good, feel good and will compliment almost any other type of training or sport that you are involved in.

5 For the Men: Friends don’t let friends skip leg day...Bro

Sure, we all know the male version of a breast enhancement involves a heavy dose of quality bench pressing. But nothing looks more ridiculous than a guy sporting board shorts with a pair of giraffe legs and a gorilla-sized upper body.

The fact is, people who make their goals public are people who accomplish their goals. If you tell every one of your friends and/or co-workers that you’re going to lose 20lbs, instead of hiding it deep down with a bunch of your other crushed dreams, the chances of you actually achieving that goal will increase substantially. Make your goals public and get after them.

Doing the big compound lower body lifts like squats, deadlifts, lunges, and hip thrusts is no walk in the park. But these exercises will actually add size and strength to your upper body, while making sure you’re not the laughing stock at your next backyard BBQ. Let’s face it, there is no better feeling than when your legs get so big that your thigh gap starts flirting with the non-existent category.

3 Do you even lift?

Conclusion:

Lifting weights is the key to achieving jaw-dropping looks when attending your next pool party.

Even if you’re not looking to turn heads and are one of those girls who just wants to ‘tone’, or a middle-aged male past your prime just trying to stay as functional as possible for as long as you can, training with weights is key, regardless of age, gender, or training status.

Start using the big lifts such as squats, lunges, deadlifts, presses, rows and you’ll be on your way to great results. Skip the treadmill and core only routines and start actually making progress in the gym. Don’t be afraid to spend time targeting those specific areas that need a little fine tuning either. Which leads me to my next two points.

Hope you enjoyed some of my unconventional tips for getting you closer to the body of your dreams this summer. Sure, I could have written another boring article about eating more veggies, consuming more protein, and drinking more water, but you should already know that stuff.

If you’ve had success with nutrition and exercise in the past, go back to what works. If you haven’t had success, find someone who has.

Even better, find a trainer who has achieved success with lots of clients and learn from them.

SPRING CLEAN DIET Now that spring is finally here, jump-start your spring cleaning by refreshing and reenergizing your diet. All too often, diet can take a back seat in your day-to-day life. However nutrition is fundamental to your overall health. Start eating in a way that makes you feel great, from the inside out. Here’s my list of the top eight ways to launch your spring diet.

Shop Ontario. Choose local and seasonal produce.

With spring comes warmer weather, longer days, and amazingly fresh produce. In-season fruit and vegetables carry a strong nutritional punch, such fantastic flavour and give you an easy solution for meeting your 7-10 daily servings of fruit and vegetables. Ontario offers a great array of seasonal produce.

For instance, look for seasonal apples, rhubarb, beets, cabbage, parsnips, and sweet potatoes. Check out http://www.ontario.ca/ foodland/availability-guide to see when Ontario produce is in season.

Think whole foods first.

With bathing suit season seemingly around the corner, the idea of extreme or crash dieting can be quite overwhelming. Although meal replacement shakes, bars, or pills can seem like an easy fix, it is more nutritionally beneficial and sustainable for overall health to focus on eating fresh, whole foods first. This includes reducing your intake of more processed ready-to-eat meals, such as frozen dinners or addwater boxed foods.

Fill up on fibre.

Freshen-up. Add colour to your meals.

The foods you eat should include every colour of the rainbow – this will ensure that you are getting the best nutritional value from each meal. Make a point to include a variety of colourful produce in your meals throughout the day – think the blues, purples, oranges, greens, yellows, and reds. Each different colour of fruit and vegetable offers different nutritional benefits. In particular, you should be eating one dark green and one orange vegetable each day. For example, try broccoli, kale, green peppers, sweet potato, or carrots.

Lighten up. Reduce your meal size.

During the long winter months it can be easy to rely on heavier comfort meals to sustain you. Now is a great time to ditch the cream sauces, cheesy pasta dishes, and large portions in favour of smaller, lighter, and nutrient-dense meals. As you tweak your diet this spring, opt for meals where ½ your plate contains vegetables, ¼ whole grains, and ¼ lean proteins. Complete your meal with a glass of milk or milk alternative and some fruit for dessert, if you have a sweet tooth.

Get in the kitchen. Prepare your meals and snacks at home.

When you prepare meals at home you are able to control what you are putting into your body and what you are avoiding.

Preparing meals and snacks at home is a great way to freshen up and lighten up your meals; it is also a great way to control and reduce your intake of unnecessary added salt, sugar, fat, and preservatives. Furthermore, when we eat out we tend to eat much larger portions than we might normally. Preparing home cooked meals is a simple and effective way of controlling our sodium, fat, and calorie intake.

Take the time to trade in your refined carbohydrates – think white bread, white rice and pasta, cookies, pastries, and other baked goods – for their whole-grain counterparts.

Whole grains, brown rice, quinoa, and oats are not only more nutritionally-beneficial, but they will keep you feeling fuller longer.

Avoid empty calories.

When feeling hungry, try choosing wholesome snacks in lieu of snacks that offer empty calories such as junk food – chips, fries, chocolate, or candy. Additionally, focus on ditching sweetened beverages such as soft drinks, sports drinks, or caffeine beverages. Although these products might provide you with a quick burst of energy, they really offer no nutritional benefits and will leave you feeling tired and sluggish.

In between meals, snack on a small handful unsalted nuts, fruit and nut butter, greek yogurt with granola, or cheese and whole grain crackers.

Drink up. Stay hydrated.

Proper hydration is important all year long, but it can become more hazardous as warmer weather arrives. This spring, focus on drinking unsweetened beverages, preferably water, all day long in order to make sure that you remain adequately hydrated – think at least six to eight glasses each day. In fact, once you feel thirsty, you are already starting to become dehydrated, so avoid this by always having water ready and waiting.

Omega-3 Do to Help You Reach Your Fitness Goals?

Omega-3 Can...: 1. Reduce Fat

A study done by the Nutritional Physiology Research Group in Australia showed that omega 3 combined with exercise provides significantly greater fat loss benefits than exercise or using omega-3 alone.

2. Protect Your Heart

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health found that regular consumption of omega-3 reduces the chances of dying from heart disease by more than 1/3.

3. Promote Muscle Growth

Omega-3 can be anabolic for humans because it can increase protein synthesis for muscle building effects by up to 30%.

4. Regulate Cholesterol

Countless studies have shown that high levels of omega-3 and low levels of omega-6 are associated with higher HDL (good) cholesterol and lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.

5. Exercise Your Brain

Just like the body, the brain must also be exercised. Research from the Journal of Molecular Neuroscience showed that omega-3 makes cell membranes more fluid to better transmit brain signals.

Angie Poirer You originally were working at CTV Morning Live before transitioning over to host for Majic 100’s morning show. How have you found this change? What role do you like more?

I began my media career in television as a producer, transitioned to a weather and entertainment anchor for the 6pm news, then became the co-host of CTV Morning Live. My career path has already taken me places I never thought I’d be, so I’m not afraid of a challenge! When I was presented the offer to start up a brand new morning show on a flagship Ottawa radio station like Majic 100, I jumped at the chance. It ended up being the best decision ever. I love working with Stuntman Stu and Trisha Owens on Majic Mornings every day. It’s truly a dream job. The bonus is I still get to host CTV Morning Live on weekends and do TV commercials, so I get the best of both worlds.

How did you feel when you stepped onto the small screen as an entertainment and weather specialist for the very first time?

The odd thing is that I was painfully shy growing up and I never wanted to be on camera. I was nudged and encouraged into the on-air role by my boss who clearly saw something in me that I didn’t think I had. I still remember the butterflies in my stomach. I still remember the first words I said into the camera and I remember how proud and excited my mom sounded when she called after that first show.

What is your favourite Ottawa childhood memory?

Born and raised in Ottawa, I have a lifetime of great memories here: playing little league with my sister, going to Storyland, and playing kick the can and capture the flag with our neighbourhood friends until dark. Most of my memories are wrapped up in the same group of girlfriends I have had since grade 4. Not many people can say they have had the same friends for their entire lives. Our children are friends now as well, growing up alongside each other.

I’m proud of those friendships.

How has your experience been, working with the Majic Morning team, on the #NoMoreBullies campaign? #NoMoreBullies is our passion at Majic 100.

It is so rewarding to get the emails, tweets, and Facebook messages from schools, students, parents, and teachers expressing what a difference our presentation has made for them. We have such a great team that comes with us to each and every school, volunteering their time because they believe in the message so much.

It feels good knowing that if you even help one child cope with their issues, it’s all worth it.

How did you enjoy hosting the Ottawa Children’s Gala this year? What is it about the event that made you want to participate?

The Ottawa Children’s Gala is the event of the season for families with young kids! It was started a few years ago by my good friend Spencer Warren and his wife Lisa. An accident with their daughter Emily inspired them to start an event that raises money for Plan-It-Safe at CHEO. Not only do you get dressed up in gala attire as a family and enjoy a fantasy night with dinner, dancing, and treats, but there are always important guest speakers to remind kids about the importance of wearing helmets and playing sports safely.

You’ve been pretty active with charities in Ottawa; how charitable or supportive do you find Ottawans to be for these causes?

This job allows me to MC, fundraise, and participate in so many charity functions in our great city. From galas to golf tournaments, marathons to family walks, I get to see first-hand how generous Ottawans are with their time and money.

We truly care about our city and how we can make it a better place for everyone.

We hear you’re a bit of a foodie. What’s your favourite dish to prepare? Have you ever tried any of Stuntman Stu’s cooking?

I love to make soups. I’m constantly googling new recipes and mixing up new combos. It’s a great way to use up wilting produce and make

sure my family gets a good shot of veggies.

Stuntman Stu has entertained us several times at his castle in Barrhaven and he certainly is the King of the BBQ. You don’t just get one meal at Stu’s – you get steak, chicken, shrimp, grilled veggies, salads – he puts on quite the spread.

But he’ll eat all the chips before you get there.

Apparently, you are an expert at making Bloody Caesars. What’s your recipe? Where would you suggest going for a good Caesar in Ottawa?

My Bloody Caesars are super dark and spicy. It must be in the perfect tall glass with a celery salt rim, lots of ice, loaded down with tons of Worcestershire sauce, a few shakes of tabasco, a hefty spoonful of horseradish, double shot of vodka, Clamato, salt and pepper sprinkled on top, and garnished with a huge stalk of celery and a spicy green bean. My favourite Caesars used to be at Big Daddy’s Crab Shack. I have yet to find one I like as much and I’m still on the hunt!

What are you most proud of, career-wise, to date?

I’m proud of the #NoMoreBullies Campaign we started ourselves at Majic 100. I’m proud that Stuntman Stu, Trisha Owens, and myself were awarded the City Builder award for our efforts and for the recognition that the work were are doing is important and it’s helping.

I’m also proud of the fact that I was chosen to be Campaign Co-chair last year for United Way Ottawa’s community campaign. To lead up the biggest fundraising initiative in our city was a great honour. I got to see exactly how that money directly helps so many people in our community from the very young to the very old. @AngiePoirier
