BreastCancerisreportedtobethemostcommontypeof
cancerprevalentamongstwomenworldwide,between ages15to70.About1in8womenarediagnosedwith breastcancerduringtheirlifetime.
ThehallmarkofbreastcancerdiseaseinNigeria,likeother developingAfricancountries,islatepresentationandthisamong otherfactorsismajorlyresponsibleforpoortreatmentoutcome intermsofsurvival.Whilsttherehasbeenreasonable breakthroughsinthediagnosisandtreatmentofthedisease, a majorknowledgegapintermsofawarenessabout breastcancerstillexist,especiallyamongstindigentsand womeninruralcommunitiesinAfrica...

CASEINPOINT
In2021,duringthebreastcancerawarenessmonth,ourteam cameacrossseriesofcommunitieswherewomenhadcancer ravaged,opensore(leaking)breasts,drapedwithnylonbags. Thesewomenwerescared,confusedandmisinformedabout theirsituation;notjustbecausetheydidn'thavemoneyforthe expensivetreatment,buttheyhadneverheardaboutbreast cancer.Duetoignoranceandpoormedicalsupport,the diseasewasallowedtodeterioratetoitsdeadlieststage.Quite unfortunatethatwefoundthemtoolate,asmostofthese womendidn'tmakeit.
Deeplytouchedbytheirpredicament,EngracedLife Foundationhassinceincreasedruralawarenesscampaigns andfreemedicaloutreachesbyover30%from2020-2022, screeningover10,000womenandgirlsforfree;withfollow upmedicalsupportthathasbenefitedpatientstoundergo lumpectomysurgery,chemo,mastectomy,radiotherapyand after-care
OURAPPROACH
· We provide support system for breast cancer patients through our communityofsurvivors,empathicvolunteersandmentalhealthspecialists. We encourage and counsel patients on accepting treatments early, whilst holdingtheirhandsthroughtheprocess.
· Through referrals and our network, we help women access breast health managementinformationandexpertsinrealtime.
· We interface with chiefs, local authorities, women leaders and other stakeholdersinlocalcommunitiestosensitizewomenandthepublicinour periodic free breast cancer screening, awareness campaign and medical outreaches.Onsomeoccasions,incentivessuchasfoodandothergiftsused asincentivestomotivateparticipation.
