Having heard about the interesting aspects of the Unyeada Fishing Festival in Andoni, Rivers State, a long standing tradition of the Obolo people for hundreds of years. Like the Argungu Fishing Festival and its Kebbawa thrills in Kebbi State, Unyeada Fishing has the potential to become one of the biggest fishing festivals in Africa, and so we decided to explore it as part of our project for documenting tourism in the Niger Delta and opening up the region for both local and international tourists.
This year, the festival organizers informed us that many activities like the the boat regatta, fishing competition and others were abridged due to funding challenges. Despite this, we found the experience to be worth the trip.
Enjoy our report about the Unyeada Fishing Festival 2024, as well as a bonus feature about our quick trip to the famed Ikuru Atlantic beach.
